There are reasons why most humans love the mountains and why the great outdoors can do so much to soothe the urban jitters. Winifred Gallagher explains the inner workings of environmental psychology in The Power of Place. Traveling from northernmost Alaska, where the need to stay indoors for so much of the year takes a heavy mental and physical toll on the locals, to the artificial canyons of Manhattan, Gallagher strips off one civilizing layer after another to reveal the human animal within us, the creature that requires open spaces and clear air to function as it should. If you ever wondered why mountaineers take the risks they do or why Michael Jackson spent all that money on a hyperbaric chamber, Gallagher has the answer.

    Book Description

Are New Yorkers and Californians so different because they live in such different settings? Why do some of us prefer the city to the country? How do urban settings increase crime? Why do we feel better after an experience in nature?

In this fascinating and enormously entertaining book, Winifred Gallagher explores the complex relationships between people and the places in which they live, love, and work. Drawing on the latest research on behavioral and environmental science, THE POWER OF PLACE examines our reactions to light, temperatiure, the seasons, and other natural phenomena, and explores the interactions between our external and internal worlds.

Gallagher's broad and dynamic definition of place includes mountaintops and the womb, Alaska's hinterlands and Manhattan's subways, and she relates these settings to everything from creativity to PMS, jet lag to tales of UFOs.

Full of complex information made totally accessible, THE POWER OF PLACE offers the latest insights into the many ways we can change our lives by changing the places we live.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative exploration into the relationship between body and place........2007-02-19

I found this book to be very informative and interesting reading. The author backs up most everything with scientific research, but also isn't afraid to speculate about things outside the realm of science (or not discovered yet).
I find it a particularly relevant for the US since many of the negative factors (noise, crowding) are on the rise - these aren't just aesthetic issues, as the book points out.

    5 out of 5 stars Place Matters.......2005-03-14

I have read this book a few times. I have noticed that I feel and think differently in different places. Personaltiy traits that have not come to the surface in one place come forth in another place. Good luck happens everywhere but how it happens often depends on place. Some amusing insights are included as well.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting and thought provoking read.......1998-09-02

Although I had to read this book in an undergraduate course, I found it extremely interesting and I read it in two days. The information is useful for anyone looking for a new place to live. Overall a very good book although the many topic's are only briefly touched upon.

4 out of 5 stars Evidence that Environment Affects Behaviour.......1996-07-28

In this book, Winifred Gallagher, discusses the various ways that environment can affect human behaviour. Written for the layman, the book does not dwell on the neuroscience data, preferring to interview both the researchers and the affected.

The biggest drawback of this book may also be it's most interesting aspect - the sheer quantity of the material Gallagher must condensed into 228 pages of text. Thus, in less than 100 pages, she discusses seasonal affective disorder, light deprivation, effects of temperature and altitude and geomagnetic phenomena. With this constraint, Gallagher's prose in necessarily tight, her interviews brief, and each chapter ends before you've had your fill of the effect she's discussing.

A good book for plane-hopping business sorts - not only can it be read on the flight, the effects of time zone changes, sleep deprivation, and fluorescent lights can be recorded as they are taking place.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to help you improve your friendships...even if you think you do not need help.......2006-07-21

FRIENDSHIFTS was great! I was looking for a book to help understand how friends seem to come and go at different stages in life. I was struggling with an issue with friend(s) that I had analyzed on my own for almost a year. This helped me to understand that this "friend shift" is natural and not my fault. I also realized that a couple of my friends are the definitition of a true, quality friend and how many other people are not lucky enough to have this. FRIENDSHIFTS gave excellent advice on how to make new friends, how to nurture you current friendships and how to save a friendship that may be ending. The author, Jan Yager, uses real examples from real people - not just statistics that we wonder where they come from. We can all relate to some of the personal contributions from the friendship interviews she did. Great research, very realistic down to earth self-help/motivational read!

    5 out of 5 stars A useful read!.......2004-07-28

Understanding the changes that friendships go through is the first step to helping them last. This book helps you to do that. It gives the reasons behind why friends act and say the things they do, and how to handle shifts throughout the course of life. I wished I had read this book sooner-it may have helped me understand my own friendships more. And the advice here may help you to make an educated choice on whether to continue a friendship or end it. A great read and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Friends tell us who we are.......2003-04-01

No matter what stage in life we are in, friends are needed for sharing experiences and receiving support whether if good or bad things happen to us. They are our mental `lifesavers' and without them we do much worse and are more woundable. Like our family, our friends are the reason for the persons we are and participate in shaping our life as we grow.

The author, Dr. Jan Yager has a Ph.D in sociology and her books are also based on interviews and surveys. She has created the word Friendshifts® to show us the way our friendships change as we go from one stage in life to another.

Our friendships change as our life does. We make friends in our childhood, as teens, as adults, and in our elderly life. We form new friends by moving, change in interests, entering a new school or getting a new job, a promotion or a new sport.

More insights in this book are how to be a better friend, how to prevent a friendship from ending and how we handle it when it does. Furthermore, it tells us about friendships at work and gender friendships.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful book on power of friendship!.......2003-01-04

Throughout our lives, friendships are among the most enduring and treasured relationships. They are often complex and of many variations: old friends, new friends, lifetime friends, close friends, casual friends, etc. Friendships are seldom static, and they evolve, grow, deepen and sometimes even wither and fade away. Sociologist and author Dr. Jan Yager, in her excellent book "Friendshifts: The Power of Friendship and How It Shapes Our Lives," explores all the various facets of these most precious connections. "Friendshifts" offers thoughtful, insightful and wise observations which can only serve to strengthen the "ties that bind" and increase our understanding of these dynamics. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars Friendshifts-Power of Friendship by C. Hartline, Edreferral.......2002-12-25

Friendshifts is a very powerful, interesting and informative book on one of the most meaningful aspects of all our lives - our relationships with our friends. Dr. Yager provides valuable and practical insights on the way friendships enrich our lives. Dr. Yager blends a fascinating combination of scientific data and real world experiences to examine the complexities of our friendships, how we can maintain them and how they keep us whole and enrich our lives. I recommend this book to everyone - as we all can benefit from enriching our lives with friends and cherishing and better maintaining this valuable and important aspect of our lives.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Church.......2007-03-20

Shane Hipps has a knack for being able to effectively read the pulse of our media drenched culture without falling into the polarized positions of most 'Christian' books. Most treatments of culture either wag their finger from afar (void of authentic engagement or understanding), or they immerse themselves so deeply in popular culture, losing their sense of perspective (void of the countercultural nature of the church). Shane avoids both by gleaning from the wisdom of cultural/media prophet Marshall McLuhan, who coined the phrase, 'the medium is the message' as well as the concept of a 'global village'. His application of McLuhan's thought has stunning pertinence to contemporary Christianity.

The fair, balanced, and thoughtful treatment results in some fantastic thoughts on how media shapes our faith, our gospel and our church. Though involved with the emerging church, Hipps doesn't use the book as a platform for mere emerging church promotion. He does offer a strong (but well informed) critique of the evangelical seeker church method, but he also offers some valid warnings for leaders in the emerging church as well.

This book is a powerful took in drawing the reader far enough away from the electronic media that has become commonplace in our lives and our faith, so that we are better able to focus and evaluate. His prescription is not the way of the Luddites or the Amish (although he is a Mennonite!). He instead challenges the reader to understand the power of electronic media, apply our faculty to think critically, and choose to use our media wisely and authentically.

Two thumbs up here. I consider this book a 'must read' for all church leaders.

3 out of 5 stars Starts well finishes poorly.......2007-02-15

Some great thoughts in the book. Starts very well and finishes poorly. The first part is definitely helpful... if you are into doing and thinking about church differently then this may be your book.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses the needs, concerns and future of a dynamic church structure........2006-11-05

THE HIDDEN POWER OF ELECTRONIC CULTURE: HOW MEDIA SHAPES FAITH, THE GOSPEL AND CHURCH is essential reading for any believer who wants to understand how gospel is presented through media filters. From questions of the neutrality issue in media analysis to cultural opportunities the church has missed and how the church can take advantage of cultural trends, THE HIDDEN POWER OF ELECTRONIC CULTURE addresses the needs, concerns and future of a dynamic church structure.

    5 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2006-08-08

If you liked "The Long Tail", "Tipping Point", and "Freakonomics," you'll find practical, lucid, and intelligent perspectives within the pages of The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture: How Media Shapes Faith, the Gospel, and Church.

5 out of 5 stars Asks the Right Questions.......2006-07-17

The Hidden Power of Electronic Culture is undeniably one of the most significant books that I've read this year. Shane Hipps has taken the discussion of changing forms in church - whether worship, or preaching, or leadership, or church governance - and raised a new, often ignored set of questions. He states this in his introduction:

"A host of books and articles have been written on what has changed and how the church ought to respond to those changes. However, few writers have made a serious effort to understand why these changes have occurred...I propose that the answers to the question of why these changes have come about can be found in part by exploring the nature and effects of media and technology on culture." (p. 16-17)

And this is exactly what this book does. Hipps proposes a model in which these questions can be considered and then uses that model to tackle some of the pressing form-related questions that the western church faces at the beginning of the twenty-first century. To be sure, much of the book is an application of Marshall McLuhan's writings from the mid- to late-twentieth century. But, for those (like myself) who have never read McLuhan, he distills the essence of McLuhan's thought and connects it with current discussion and debate. For those who have already read McLuhan, I suspect that the book may offer just as much for exactly those reasons. In short, this is a wonderful, readable book that will aid the church in her often tumultuous dialogue with a media-savvy culture.

    Book Description

From one of the world's premier architecture critics, a groundbreaking dissection of how the colossal egos of the powerful and wealthy determine what actually gets built--of the real reasons why we build.

Architecture critics most often write about buildings as a form of art, promulgating an "auteur theory" of architecture that focuses on the dazzling brilliance of the big names, such as Rem Koolhaas and Frank Gehry, and underplaying the role of the wealthy and powerful in forcing the architects' hands. Deyan Sudjic puts forth a boldly contrarian view. Architecture must be understood as an expression of power and as a weapon, or form of propaganda, that is used in ways both subtle and grandiose as a means of achieving and maintaining power--of carving a legacy out of glass, steel, and stone.

While most architecture books focus on a certain building or a specific architect, The Edifice Complex takes a wide-angle look at a fascinating range of buildings and large-scale building schemes--both the impressively effective and the disastrously ill conceived. In a lively and wonderfully accessible narrative style, Sudjic takes readers behind the scenes of the stories of the great political manipulators of architecture in the twentieth century, from the great dictators of fascism--Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin--and their megalomaniacal plans for rebuilding Berlin, Rome, and Moscow, to power-broker businessmen such as Nelson Rockefeller; and from the "theme park" propaganda of the presidential libraries to the vainglorious symbolism of Saddam Hussein's Mother of All Battles Mosque. While some leaders have used architecture as a means of consolidating control over a nation, others have employed architecture to shape a new national identity, as Ataturk did to a large degree of success in Turkey and the shahs attempted and failed to do in Iran.

But what of the architects? Sudjic also examines the role they play in lending their talents to these efforts, from those who have all too willingly aided and abetted, such as Albert Speer, to those who have courted the powerful while remaining true to their art, such as Mies van der Rohe.

The Edifice Complex offers a brilliant reinterpretation of the role of buildings in our lives and of the age-old question why we build.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reveals Monolithic Minds.......2006-06-12

The individual sentences of this book are written in a literate, engaging style. The author is a master of the telling figure of speech. For example, he compares some architects' broad, over-the-top creations to books published in large-print. However, the paragraphs often follow a somewhat difficult zigzag course. Reading along them is like trying to get a zipper back on track. Sudjic refers now to an architect - now to his predecessor - now to his replacement.

Nevertheless, this book is worth the concentration it takes to read it through. When you finish, you will have a better insight into the minds of many dictators and tyrants than a whole host of psychology books can offer. After all the analyses of Hitler's motives that have been put forth, after all the anguished Holocaust questionings of "Why?" - this book gives one of the most revealing looks into what might impel such savage destruction. You will see the drive these men have to clear away diverse individuality and to replace it with monolithic constructions designed to memorialize them for the ages. It's Ozymandias all over again and again.

There are also good chapters on less weighty building projects - such as the various Presidential libraries. And for mystery fans, you will even find a good true-life murder story here.

I just wish the publishers of this book had gone to the extra expense of including pictures. It would have been valuable to see the buildings that Sudjic refers to as he describes them.

My only other criticism is that when all is said and done, Sudjic still seems to subscribe to the idea of architecture as a great man's sculpting projected large upon the landscape. He seems to approve of Brasilia, for example - with all its incommodious vastness of space and structure. Sudjic would do well to incorporate the ideas of urbanologist Jane Jacobs into his analyses. But you can compare the philosophies yourself. After reading this book, get a copy of Jacobs' "Death and Life of Great American Cities" for a more complete understanding of how form really must be made to follow function.

5 out of 5 stars It makes you look at buildings differently.......2006-03-22

Mr. Sudjic is an architecture critic. In this book he talks about the buildings that the wealthy and the powerful have put up to honor themselves. He writes mostly of well known things: the designs Albert Speer did for Hitler, Saddam Hussein's Mother of All Battles Mosque (to celebrate Iraq's victory in the First Gulf war - Yes, that's right, victory), the designs of the Presidental libraries in the US, Donald Trump's various constructions.

Beyond understanding more about these buildings, it makes you take a different view of what's going on around you. For instance their is a new sub-division of McMansions being built in the town where I live. They are ugly, stupid, tacky buildings, no originality at all. They are not identical, in fact all are different; but they all look just alike.

And you think of Bill Gates $30 million house in Seattle. And the tower at Stanford University sometimes called 'Hoover's Last Erection.'

5 out of 5 stars A good read without untranslatable archibabble.......2006-03-08

This is a very readable book that moves quickly to new projects and players without getting dull. The only drawback is a lack of illustrations but the writer is so good at description that it allows you to easily understand the experience of each building project.

Most of the major works are already well known and written about extensively elsewhere But compiling them here with the authors perceptive analysis makes for good reading. I suggest searching the internet for pictures of the more interesting projects.

I was also impressed by the scope of the book. Rather than limiting himself to one geographic area or the best known examples of architecture used for control or ego enhancement, Sudjic includes worldwide examples with relevent background information.

Sudjic also attempts to make sense of the motivation of the architects involved. Can an architect produce architecture without being drawn in to the politics. Are the architects of despots fellow conspirators, enablers or simply earning a living. Does the ego of the architect, in many cases of questionable talent, make them easy prey for those seeking to build an architecture of oppression. In each example Sudjic makes use of the information available to try to clearify this as well as the motivation of the rich and powerful who commission such architecture.

Ultimately this is a book that will appeal not only to those knowledgable in architecture who are familiar with the cast-of-characters but also those who just want a very interesting book.

    5 out of 5 stars Edification.......2006-03-05

Learned from it and loved it. Highly recomend the book; you'll never look at buildings the same.

    4 out of 5 stars A joy!.......2005-12-14

This book is not only informative but highly entertaining at the same time. One would consider this a high quality journalistic piece rather than cerebral thesis. As the title said appropriately, Deyan discussed the significance of architecture in humanity. Some architects and urban planners would design buildings and city plan to facilitate civilisationn whilst some would twist these disciplines to endorse their idealogies, expressing their yearning for immortality. Naturally, a few meglomaniacs such as Chairman Mao, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Hitler, Miterrand, Mussolini and many others are featured in length. There were also discussions about the "superarchitects", of why they become so, of why they have become their own worst enemies, of why some have let egos get the better of them (namely David Childs from SOM versus Daniel Libeskind regarding the construction of Freedom Tower on Ground Zero). I truly say that after reading the book, I'm more informed of the architecture around me. Suffice to say that it's ideal to read the book now where the featured projects are still fresh and up-to-date. In another five years or beyond, it might become less convincing to the younger generation despite that the essence of architecture shall remain the same. As one should know, architecture takes a long time to evolve. If you refer to Palladio design, it's still a fresh as it was concocted few hundred years ago. A book written with conviction and passion by an enthusiastic but knowledgeable author who shares with eager and enthusiastic reader like myself. Highly recommended and look forward to a sequel if there's such a thing. The only improvement I can comment is probably including pictures of those mentioned buildings as reference. In doing so, the book become more interactive and even more effective. What a joy!

In The Power of Karma, renowned psychic Mary T. Browne debunks our fatalistic assumptions about this mysterious universal law. "Many people think there's nothing they can do to change their karma--it's preordained so why bother trying to change their situation?" she writes. Yet karma is an active process, according to Browne, one that we can seize control of simply by taking positive action. Although many of her karmic theories are reassuring--basically, you get out of life what you put into it--some may find her delivery simplistic. Nonetheless, her carpe diem attitude toward improving karma is inspiring, whether it's dieting to lose weight or reaching out to a homeless person. Browne (Life After Death) uses her clients' real-life stories to illustrate how readers can alter and improve their karma. She also suggests numerous exercises, including guided meditations, jotting notes on index cards, and practicing karma-altering affirmations such as, "I will let go of the past" or "I'm not a victim and will not act like one." --Gail Hudson

    4 out of 5 stars easy & interesting.......2007-09-07

I really enjoyed this book. A little too much about the author at first (I guess relevant to explanation). Very easy to follow, not a lot of mumbo, jumbo. To sum it up...helpful in understanding karma.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a service to humanity.......2006-11-29

I have read this book carefully and thoughtfully. I find the author sincere and honest in how she uses her talents as a stewardship, which the author is doing here. I find this book helpful because of the real life stories she shares. It's a way to get a grasp on karma, one of the laws of the universe that many people do not understand. I have weighed her writings carefully and I think that in one case----the one about the hundred dollars-----could have been presented a little better. To visualize something a person wants, to create it non-harmfully depends on a couple of basic things. The need must be integrous. And two, the energy put 'out there' will not necessarily create negative karma if one adds "In the Name of the Highest Good". What this means is that a person is cognizant that harm may come from what is being asked for. In that case, if the item does not show up, then it would be harmful and the universe is being allowed to operate in harmony with the request and the laws. In a well known book about Kabbalistic Magick, the author writes that there are three types of magic. White. Grey. Black. In White Magick, the seeker is seeking to improve their spiritual lives without directly affecting others on the outer planes. In grey, the intention is honest and the outcome is for the personal self in gain, but not necessarily for the spirtual Self. In black magick, this is a mistake, one not necessarily intended to do harm, but in which harm has come. In this example by the author, a person 'puts out there' that he wants $1,000. It comes eventually, and he gets it through the death of a relative through a will. In the Name of The Highest Good would have prevented this. A few of the ideas seem to be coming from personal opinion, such as only a few gifted people have spirit guides. Such ideas can be taken with a grain of salt. However, I feel that this book is highly valuable through it's real life explnations of how the law of karma works in everyday life.

1 out of 5 stars All in all a waste of time.......2006-06-08

I agree with much of Morgan of the Lakes review. This author seems very egotistical about her gifts and I think it negatively clouds the information she provides in this book. Karma basically is a balance of experiencing or a reaping of what we sow as the author seems to explain it and gives a fair amount of examples of clinets shes counseled that have had karma return to them. But, I think this is a fairly simple understanding of karma and stops the reader from fully understanding what it is especially if they are a beginneer to so called "New Age" material. The author also states that when you ask the universerse for somthing, in her example, a hundred dollars, that you will be taking somthing from someone else and that little evil goblins would take it from someone needy to bring it to you. I always had an understanding that the universe was unlimited in its resources and noone has to loose in order for you to gain. The fact that the author stated this in her book simply makes me feel that I wasted my time reading the book and that the material isnt very evolved in itsself.
I reccomend reading a couple of matthews books from Suzy Ward for a more enlightened insight into issues such as karma etc

    5 out of 5 stars A great Teacher.......2004-07-07

Mary T. Browne never disappoints. In simple language, her lessons deliver understanding. In Love In Action, Mary T. explained how a life of service leads to fulfillment, satisfaction, peace and balanced karma. Life After Death explained the continuation of life and how karma always seeks balance. Like water seeking its own level, karma finds equilibrium in physical life or spiritual. No action lacks an equal reaction. Mary T. teaches that karma is action. The Power of Karma emphasizes this fact by supplying the reader with action. The serious reader has a supply of colored index cards and records the messages and keeps a Karma Journal. These exercises ensure that the reader/student is involved-action =karma.

5 out of 5 stars Want to find out more about dealing with issues?.......2003-09-19

I absolutely loved this book. Mary Browne is apparently a fairly well known psychic, and she offers advice here in the form of cases from her files of clients dealing with life issues. The book summarizes the tales of the woman that can't stop spending money, of other women that feel they would be better off leaving their husbands for the men they are having affairs with, and many other interesting stories. Browne also discusses the issues of reincarnation and karma. She specifically goes into the effects on one's karma from various actions, which is interesting and believable, even if the concepts of reincarnation and karma are not ideas you believe in.

The most interesting point of the book for me was the specifics she provided on going through past lives. For anyone that is interested in this kind of thing, you must pick up this book. I have already recommended it to one friend, and I believe she enjoyed it greatly. I need to get my mom to read this book, and plan to read more books by Mary Browne.

    Book Description

This book is the result of 35 years of personally funded research into finding how shapes and different materials convert universal aether into other forces and energies. Dan has broken the code on how the process works; how nature manifests from the virtual particle soup of the aether into matter. Dan has also defined a unified field theory which puts all this into perspective, complete with the mathematical physics and a morphology of atomic structure. He defines the embryonic basis for a new brach of physics and chemistry. The implications of the breakthrough discoveries elucidated in this book have far reaching implications in every area of our lives.

Another great book from Dan. His own experiments in the latter part of the book are fascinating. I hope he continues to enlighten the world of physics.

    Book Description

Terry Wardle presents compelling evidence that countless churches are made up of people who seem perpetually caught in spiritual infancy. What does it really mean to be Christlike? Christians today are struggling with immaturity because they do not know the answer to that question. This book surveys the life of Jesus to identify eight characteristics of Christ that are to be nurtured by the Holy Spirit in the believer's life. Being transformed into the likeness of Christ is the true mark of spiritual maturity.

I loved this book! I could feel the Holy Spirit radiating from the pages as I read! This book can change lives! It will also draw people nearer and nearer to the Savior! Because of the transforming power of the Holy Spirit that radiates from the pages of this book I purchased three more copies to give out as gifts.

Excellent book! I purchased one at a seminar led by Dr. Terry Wardle and was challenged by it. When it came time to find a book for the Ladies' Study Group at my church, I knew that was the one!

Don't read it if you don't want to be challenged to be more like Jesus! But if you do, it's the book for you.

Power, Money, and Trade Decisions that Shape Global Economic Relations By Mark R. Brawley

This book is an introduction to International Relations that uses examples from International Political Economy (IPE). It presents the theories and paradigms of International Relations in the context of the issues of trade, investment, and monetary relations. Largely it does so by developing historical cases of pivotal events in the evolution of the IPE to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of these theories. This focus on the substantive material of the IPE allows a shift beyond traditional debates to include newer paradigms such as Constructivism and Institutionalism. The result is a book that not only reveals and explains prominent arguments and debates, but also provides grounding in the history and structure of the IPE.

The first half of the book explains the main features of the IPE. It develops and illustrates the ways in which political scientists elaborate and employ theories of International Relations by classifying and examining the main levels of analysis from characteristics of the international system, through those of nation states, to explanations of policy effected by officials. The second half examines important historical cases chosen both to illustrate theories and also to chart the overall patterns of change. Readers are thereby introduced to important theories and issues in International Relations and to key historical episodes from the late nineteenth century to the recent East Asian financial crisis. Special attention is paid to critical decisions in the development of American and Canadian foreign policies.
