This is an awesome pop up book! I bought it for my 3 year old's B-Day. He loves looking at the book while I read to him about the prehistoric Mega-Beasts. I actually have learned a lot myself from this book. Although you would normally think this book is for boys. My six year old daughter also enjoys me reading these books to her. They are fun and very educational. I am a high school teacher and I really think this pop up book would be very valuable to any science classroom. I liked this book so much I also purchased the other two in the set!

These books cover everything from scientific names to places. It is heavey on bigfoots from around the world and overlaps some on them but all in all a good read if your into the science part of cryptozoology.There are stories in the book about sightings but this is not a pure sightings book it is more about cataloging the cryptids.
Phenomenal 2 Volume Set!.......2004-10-17
Finally! A long overdue authoritative encyclopedia of cryptozoology! This set is awesome! There is so much information here that it'll take a veeery long time to digest it all.
I do have several suggestions though:
1) More photos and illustrations (especially photos and stills from film footage which are discussed, but not shown).
2) Dustjackets. The covers are gorgeous, but how long will they remain so without dustjackets? And at this price, you'd think the publisher could afford it. Which brings me to...
3) The price is outrageous. How can the publisher make any money by limiting it's buyers to libraries, rich people and fools like me? $60 sure, even $75, but $185? Jeez! And even though I paid WAY less than that for my set, it still almost killed by bank account.
Even so, I'm glad I bought it and wouldn't be without it.
A Very Intersting Ecylcopedia.......2004-10-16
I accidently stumbled upon this item while looking for anything on the Paranormal. The Book seemed very intersting and I bought it. The Price was a Killer, but it was worth it. It is set in 2 voulumes which is more like an Encyclopedia, but in the Final Sections of Volume Two mainly is Reference to all the New Species discovered in the 20th Century. Also in the real Final pages, are all Lakes that supposedly have Monsters in them like Lake Erie or Lake Champlain. I would recommend this Book for Reference, but not for reading from Start because like I said, it is more like an Encyclopedia than a Non Fiction Novel.

This two-volume set is a basic layman's guide to the weird, wonderful world of unknown animals. These are animals whose existence has not been proven at this time. While the idea that there may be animals, including some very large ones, living in the world and we have no proof of their existence might be strange to some people it was during my lifetime that gorillas and rhinoceroses were removed from the category of fables.
For each entry the editors provide information on its physical description, behavior, distribution, possible explanations, significant sightings, and sources. This is a non-judgmental review of the reports from around the world presented in a typical encyclopedic style. Although it contains primarily creatures reported to exist but not proven it also includes some animals like the Dodo bird, which were known to exist and are believed extinct. But, because there have been occasional reported sightings in recent years these animals are included.
ABC-CLIO, Inc. published some of the best educational materials of this type on the market today. As always Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology is a high quality reference work written at a high-school level and so is accessible to everyone. Mysterious Creatures is a highly recommended read for anyone interested in this area and a recommended purchase for libraries.

This book is one in Time Life Books' The Enchanted World series. Each of these books covers a different aspect of folklore and mythology, and they are an excellent set. They tell stories in a similar format and complement each other well without repeating the content. Each is about 140 pages.
This is a beautifully illustrated well printed volume. Artists include Matt Mahurin, John Collier, John Jude Palencar, Marshall Arisman, John Howe, Kunio Hagio, Michael Paraskevas, Brian McCall, Gary Kelly, Willi Glasauer, Yvonne Gilbert and Sam Bayer. Older depictions of night creatures are mixed in, including Henry Fuseli's Nightmare.
Stories are retold in a style that makes for a good read. These stories come from all over the world. Often there will be smaller illustrations and captions in the margins to the main story. These tell variations of the story and related stories from other cultures.
This is a beautifully bound and printed book. The binding is just cloth to collectors, but it is printed to look like a wizard's book. The cover shows a dragon holding a picture of a spooky night creature (I think its a vampire). I think it was the cover that got me reading this when I was child (this would be for older children because of the spooky nature).

This is a well researched nicely produced series. For me one book in the series (I think it was Fairies) had me hooked. If you are interested in mythology and all things magic then it is definitely worth trying out the series. High school and middle school libraries should consider the series. Some books might cause issues since they are about the occult, but some like The Legend of Camelot book will be completely Kosher.

Unlike other books I bought this one is not only showing you finish artwork, but it shows you how to do it with clear instructions. There's a lot of creatures also to get inspiration. The techniques demonstrated goes from traditional to digital.

I really enjoy this book for its more professional, polished, artwork. (For some reason there is a stigma among booksellers and teachers that all dragon and fairy how to books have to be for children and young adults. This is definitely not the case.) Not all the creatures are perfect and not all the creatures are favorites of mine but overall this is a nice book for the more advanced artist, or even a nice coffe table book for those just intrested in the subject.

I've looked through this book several times while browsing various bookstores. Over and over I've found myself marveling at the wonderful artwork that lines the book. For me, I must say it's an excellent book for drawing fantasy beasts, painting them as well. I'm yet to get the book, but I've looked at it enough times to know how good it is. Personally, it's one of my favorite "How-to-Draw" books.
Enjoyable and Instructive.......2005-10-20
I bought the Drawing & Painting Fantasy Beasts and the Fantasy Figures books for our high school library. The kids really enjoy them and so do I. I just signed on to see what else might be in this series and to order more copies. While these books may not appeal to everyone (not enough step-by-step for true beginners), the layout and abundance of good pictures and ideas will grab most readers and artists.

Tales of the Cryptids.......2007-01-19
I bought this book for my 10 year old nephew, who, despite all the super electronic gizmos competing for attention at Christmas, took this one up to bed Christmas Eve, and couldn't put it down. Neither could his father, or his 8 year old brother. And I read it before I gave it to him. Very well-researched and balanced with an enquiring approach to the whole subject of Cryptids. Many thanks to the authors for another excellent book that gets kids to unplug from the computer, read a book and get their brains in gear.

I am always on the prowl for books that will excite my eight-year-old sons, particularly if they don't have to do with underpants or wizards. With apologies to Dav Pilkey and J.K. Rowling, both of whom write fantastic books, I need a little variety. And so I was ecstatic to find TALES OF THE CRYPTIDS on the new non-fiction shelf in the library children's room. So ecstatic, in fact, that I kept the book hidden in my office until I had a chance to sit down and read it myself. It is fabulous, fabulous, fabulous (that's one for each of the book's three co-creators).
This meaty middle-grade non-fiction title takes readers on an adventure in cryptozoology. "Crypto-What?" asks the opening chapter title. Cryptozoology, "the study of and searching for legendary animals--called cryptids--to find out if there's any possibility that these mysterious animals people say they've seen really exist." From Bigfoot to the Loch Ness Monster to prehistoric cryptids you may never have heard of, this book tells readers what is true, what is not, and what scientists just can't be sure about.
In addition to being plain interesting, the book is designed well and is illustrated with a nice blend of photographs and drawings. The authors include a "Reality Index" to help readers tease hoaxes from reality as well as a thorough bibliography of books, articles and web sites for readers who want to continue their cryptid studies. I love that the authors had the courage to turn an objective eye to a fabulously interesting topic that happens to be fraught with doubt and disbelief. The result is a book that helps young readers to realize that all scientific investigation, cryptozoology included, requires a careful balance of skepticism and open-mindedness.

This book is a gem for anyone interested in cryptozoology. I bought this book for my teenage son who has autism. He asked for this book. It's great! It coinsides with a program with the same name that has been shown on Discovery Channel. The book is a perfect companion to the program. It has awesome descriptions and "photos" of the prehistoric animals. It clarifies when each animal lived, and what the world looked like at that time. The fact that Nigel Marvin "went back in time" to study these monsters was awesome! Anyone who loves prehistoric animals has to have this book in their collection!

I bought the book and it's on the shelf right now waiting to be read. I have already seen the program and it was excellent. I'm sure the book will be aswell. I bought the book because I saw the program and it made me want to buy the book. I at least recomend buying the film. My brother has read the book though and he said he really liked it. I think it would be a good idea to buy the book and see what it's like for yourself.

Face-to-face with sharks that can bite whales in half? Swim with armor-plated fish so powerful that they can bite through chain mail? Dive into the midst of a feeding frenzy? Do all this and live to write about it?
This is the premise behind "Chased By Sea Monsters", the companion book to the Discovery Channel program. The series featured intrepid zoologist/time-traveler Nigel Marven swimming in the seven most deadly seas of the prehistoric age and encountering some of the most dangerous (and not-so-dangerous) sea monsters of those eras, such as the Jurassic and Devonian. Some of the creatures that Nigel encounters are the marine crocodile, the pack hunting mosasaur, the may-not-be extinct megalodon shark and the whale-eating prehistoric whale the basilosaurus.
The book is a word-for-word print version of the program though it also features a few more facts about some of the creatures. The book does not go into a lot of biological detail about the creatures but you do get a good feel for how they interacted and what they ate (or what ate them), and what climate conditions were like. The book does provide brief summaries of the creatures, giving the era they lived in, length, what they ate and the like.
If you would like to be "Chased By Sea Monsters" and get more of a feel for the marine reptiles of the dinosaur age, this is the book to have.

This is a great book to go with a great documentary. It talks of top seven predators that lived in the oceans of the past in seven different time periods, like the massive squid-like Cameroceras (which would have made modern squid squirm helplessly), the bone-crushing Dunkleosteus (which makes piranhas seem like minnows), the largest ichthyosaur ever -- Cymbospondylus (which luckily feeds mostly on fish), the biggest carnivore ever -- Liopleurodon (of which the only protection availiable is a chemical detterant, if humans were to venture into such waters), the pack-hunting Tylosaurus (which could have eaten a Tyrannosaurus), the most vicious whale ever -- Basilosaurus (compare to modern baleen whales) and the eighteen meter shark -- Charcharodon (which would make it's modern cousin the great white shark look like a mere goldfish). There is one flaw, however. The two authors of this book have varying tones of writing. One writes it in an encyclopaedic way, while the other writes as if it is a story. (Like the Walking With Dinosaurs and Walking With Beasts books). Both do have a sense of humor which shows in their infoboxes on how to survive in the waters of the time period in question, as well as the hazards there.
Ichthysoaurs, mosasaurs and plesiosaurs, oh my!.......2006-01-14
Written as a companion to the BBC television documentary series, this beautiful book takes the reader on an illustrated journey thru the prehistoric oceans. The book highlights seven different time periods (in seven different chapters) in the Earth's past, and shows the sea creatures living at those times; emphasizing those with the biggest jaws and their respective prey.
In each chapter, the book examines the physiology, anatomy, habitat, and probably lifestyle of the top predators. Each chapter also shows what is happening on land at that same time, and consistently shows that the predators on land were really no match in terms of size or scariness with respect to their marine counterparts. Covered monsters include reptiles such as mosasaurs, aquatic carniverous birds such as hesperonis, sharks like megaladon, and mammals such as the king of whales; basilosaurus. Each chapter also shows how the earth's continents were positioned at that time, along with the state of the global climate.
The book is beautifully illustrated, with color pictures drawn to look like underwater photographs of the actual creatures as if they were still alive. The intro chapter also gives a timeline of life on the planet, and explains how life evolved from sea to land, and often times back to the sea again. Overall, a great book; though it is missing several things that prevent me from giving it 5 out of 5 stars. First, throughout the text various sea creatures are named without any accompanying figures. Second, the term "sea monsters" implies animals at the very top of the food pyramid. Unfortunately, this book fails to "flesh out" the rest of the food pyramid. Each chapter should have included one large illustration of a food pyramid, with illustrations and names of the various organims at each step in the pyramid. Third, outside of one chapter, the book emphasizes creatures living and hunting in the shallows, or the top layer of the ocean. It would be nice if the book also examined more creatures living closer to the ocean bottom, such as deep-sea fish. Last, there should be a concluding chapter to sum everything up. This chapter should also include a large picture of the modern Earth, and highlight where fossils of the different "sea monsters" have been found. Even with these drawbacks, the book is still wonderful, and is great reading for kids, teenagers and adults.

Good, but could have been better..........2007-06-12
I just bought this book about two weeks ago and since it's a light read I finished it in about three days.
It was a pretty informative book as these things go. Being mostly focused on the title creature "Big Bird" of Texas fame it didn't leave much room for the other mystery flying creatures of the world.
Though the author made an effort to include some of these other mystery flyers, it almost came as an afterthought.
Being from the area the author would obviously focus on his own backyard and I don't blame him, but more thought could have been put in the section on creatures from the other areas both in this country and in other countries.
Plus the fact that he included the "Mothman" in his living Pterosaurs theory, which is just insulting. Mothman has never been identified as a Pterosaur by any of the witnesses and this "fact" just seems to be pulled out from thin air, so to speak.
The Book also has many spelling and punctuation errors that could have been found had they had a decent editor.
In all, if you're from Texas or plan to travel there to do research, it's a great book on local folklore, but if you're from anywhere else in the world it really has no impact on the Cryptozoological hunt for the mystery flying creatures of the rest of the world.
Close to the edge.......2007-05-15
I enjoyed the book, I thought it was entertaining and informative on a subject considered taboo in most scientific circles, however it did not take me "to the edge" or the fringe if you will. The author mostly stayed clear of the most controversial aspects of flying humanoids, and mentioned some cases only in passing ie" flying human November 1975 Rio Grande area, and gave no details. He did not take the proverbial leap of faith and considedered the whole spectrum of the phenomena, the paranormal side, UFOs, etc. He kept it safe.

More than meets the eye.......2007-03-18
I was disappointed when I took this book out of the Amazon.com mailer and saw how thin it was, but when I started reading it I realized it was PACKED with interesting research and personally investigated accounts - NOT just a bunch of speculation as is too often the case with this type of book. Anyone interested in Forteana will enjoy this book and I am adding the author to my list of writers whose books I will look out for in the future.
Monstrously Entertaining!.......2007-03-17
I first met Ken Gerhard a few years ago at Chester Moore's Crypto Conference in Texas; and since then our paths have crossed on various occasions - at gigs and out in the monster-hunting field, too.
I was pleased to find on first speaking with Ken that (like me and the good folk at the Center for Fortean Zoology who have published his book, and whose US Ofiice I coordinate) he is one who likes to get out there and into the thick of the action; rather than simply relying on the Internet for his data.
And I'm pleased to say that Big Bird! does not disappoint. For anyone with an interest in monstrous winged-things, Ken's book is essential and informative reading. And the fact that it's written by someone with a sincere passion for his subject matter makes it all the better.

Even the monster-shy will find it hard not to smile when they read sidebars such as "What does bigfoot eat?" (Everything from acorns and honey to tadpoles and salmon.) Seriously and exhaustively researched, this guide covers more than 100 monsters in the following categories: hairy humanoids, lake monsters and sea serpents, flying monsters, dwarves and giants, cryptid animals (animals heretofore unknown to science), beastmen and beastwomen ("humanoids" with numerous animalistic features), supernatural monsters, and the not readily classifiable enigmatic entities such as the bogeymen, phantom felines, and the infamous Mad Gasser of Mattoon.
Gleaned from Native American legends, American folklore, and modern sightings, this is the first-ever collection cataloging the vast expanse of bizarre creatures inhabiting North America. Laid out like a field guide to birds or mammals, the book helps the reader become familiar with each monster through photos (when available), drawings, and each creature's vital statistics: distinguishing features, range and habitat, diet, the source reporting the monster, and a rating of the likelihood of spotting each creature in the wild.

A decent overview of America's monster phenoms. Not a whole lot on any one subject, but makes for entertaining reading. Everything from Bigfoot to creatures totally unheard of by most. Not bad.

I find this field guide exceedingly interesting, if not frightening. Blackmen tirelessly explains the characteristics of different monsters with factual evidence, pictures, and drawings to create a definite page turner. However, I find a large portion of this book to be chock full of urban legends and myths that simply aren't true. For instance, Blackmen introduces the fact that Earwigs burrow into the ears to eat brains along with many other monsters consuming humans in some way, but this sounds way too farfetched itself to believe. And from what I see, there are no documentations to prove that Bogeyman also exist (confused with child murderers in this book), along with man-eating deer women. However, I find this book very well put together and informative if you can pick out the factual evidence, and is wll worth the money. A definite buy.

I've read some nasty reviews here, but rest assured that this book is one of the most organized and interesting you'll ever read on the subject. Personally, I love this book because of the way Blackman combines supernaturalism and cryptozoology into a realistic zoological field guide. Plus, the tips on how to hunt monsters give you something to do on boring days. I can't get enough of the enigmatic monsters in this marvelous book, and I really think you should give it a chance. So open up your mind, open up this book, and let it work its magic. Remember, it may come in handy some day...

If you want to learn about crptozoology and look for the truth then this is not for you.While it had some pretty good photos and some ok story's.There was A lot of really stupid stuff like the little section of the likelihood of encountering one of these creatures.And some of the so called monsters like the boogey man,I mean please can't the author take things A little more serios.

This book is entertaining in that it's humoristic but it also provides some nice insights into Native American as well as local folklore and decent cryptozoology/paranormal info.No it's not Keel,Coleman,or Sanderson,but it's worth reading.

For its era, Sanderson's book presented remarkably strong and thorough coverage. I do not pretend that Sanderson is Heuvelman's scientific peer in any way, shape, or form; yet Sanderson has clearly paid as much attention to journalistic sources as has his fellow.
What troubles one more than the book is the packaging. Recall that this is a 1960 work in 2006 clothing. Thus, while we see, e.g., the Minnesota iceman on the cover, we don't see him in the text: recall that the iceman incident occurred in 1968! The same goes for "Patty," and I'm glad we don't descry the famous still image of the Patterson-Gimlin film on the cover, but it seems likely to show up on a subsequent reprint.
It also intrigues me that, while Sanderson clearly reveals the international scope of his travels and his data-collection activities, he seems terminologically lightweight. He discusses the experiences of Yucatan natives with diminutive proto-humans but never uses the term "Alux," and he speaks of variegated Australasian adventures but fails to mention the Tjangara, the Lo-An, the Tullamurri, or the Yowie.
Bear in mind what your getting, and note carefully and clearly that the cover is just that--a cover, by no means a careful assemblage of historically appropriate photographs and sketches--and you should be reasonably happy with Sanderson's work. Yet, even though Heuvelmans devoted only a fraction of his monumental opus to ABSMs, I still find that the Belgian's work overpowers the Scot's--by far!

This is one of the great classics of Bigfoot research. Without this book, the study of Sasquatch and similar creatures probably wouldn't be what it is today.

One Of The Very Best .......2006-07-21
Still Amongst the very best ever written on the subject. The late Ivan Sanderson, a respected zoologist of his time, was well ahead of most in the scientific community. But maybe that was because he was known for his many hours of actual fieldwork, and not just the college classroom. I rate "Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come To Life" in the top 5 of all time. Almost like new everytime I read it. Some of the most classic stories in Bigfoot lore were first widely published in this book.
The Basic Source Book for Understanding Mystery Hominids/Hominoids.......2006-06-21
Since this book first appeared in the early 1960s, it has proven to be the basic text book for understanding this mystery. The reason for this is not that Sanderson includes all the eyewitness and other accounts concering mystery hominids/hominoids or that he surveys the entire planet in looking into this mystery. Sanderson's strength is that he was a biologist and brought the rigor of his dicipline with him. Sanderson not only describes the action, Sanderson tells you why these mystery creatures are found where they are found. He explains fringe areas and montane forests and their significance in a biological explanation of what is happening. In short, Sanderson's book gives this mystery a predictive value, telling the reader where creatures should be seen based on the geography and biology of where they have been seen to date. Anyone wishing to understand mystery hominds/hominoids should consider Sanderson's work essential and the fundamental work in the field. This holds true as much today as the day it first appeared.

The deep sea is considered the last place on Earth that is relatively untouched and unexplored by man. As such, the last 20 years have witnessed an explosion in the number of books, movies (think IMAX), documentaries (Discovery Channel) and other lay-man oriented exposes on the deep sea. This book fits right in with that trend, and serves as a good introduction to the biology of the deep sea.
The book describes the different zones of the ocean, how each is uniquely different from the others, and how they interact with each other. The book then focuses on the deep sea, that layer of water that extends from 2 miles below the surface to the very sea-bottom. The emphasis is on the different animals that live in this part of the sea, such as anglerfish, viperfish, certain types of sharks, the denizens around undersea hot vents, etc... There is also discussion of life cycles, the ocean geography, currents, and the food chain.
The book itself is quite interesting to read, or just to flip through. The photos of the various deep-sea animals are quite impressive, and in color of course. The text itself is appropriate for anyone with at least a high school education. The entire book can be read in one sitting, the level of science is appropriate for high-school seniors, and the pages are well laid out with pictures interspersed within the text.
Excepting the color photographs, the book itself is not much better than previous texts in this same topic. I do recommend it for reading though, as it is enjoyable and educational at the same time.

This is a fascinating, compelling book with a lot of truly phenomenal photography throughout. I love deep-sea beasties - they please my aesthetic taste - spiky, fangy, bizarre and... bioluminescent. Hmm. The writing is clear, concise and evocative - an 'easy' read without being simplistic or dumbed-down. Overall, an excellent trip into a world here and not-here. Highly recommended.

I sat with this book for 4 solid hours, in aew. Packed with incredible photos of creatures so bizarre that you couldn't invent anything even close to this reality. Hoyt explains the layers of the sea and what lives there, why and how each atmosphere creates and hosts it's own World. It tells in plain language how these creatures live, eat and reproduce and find each other in the pitch black. It's rare to find a book who's text and visual offerings are equally astounding and educational. I came away with a feeling that all I thought I knew about the sea and life on Earth had just been rewritten for me. This book is a genuine treat and a glimpse into all the possibilites of Life in our "not human" terms.
