3 out of 5 stars Don't Review this Book!!!.......2007-08-24

Oh my god!! Don't review this book or you may get fired! Ahhh!!

This book is so paranoid it will make you feel crazy. This book is like a conspiracy theory for offices, which is mildly entertaining, except for the fact that I work in the office.. and they might be reading this.. shhhh..

All in all, I think this book would be informative to people who have not had fatherly advice or instruction on conformity and how to act appropriate in an office. Otherwise it's a rehash of annoying but helpful parental advice.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Corporate Life.......2007-06-23

This book is definitely a must-read for anyone working in a corporate atmosphere, whether it is a small company or a large one. In fact, I would like to go one more step forward, and suggest that this book may be one of the best investments you can make in your work life ever. No exaggeration here, just plain simple truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift.......2007-04-10

I have purchased well over 20 books. They make great gifts, especially for graduation.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable read for those in the corporate world.......2007-04-03

While you may not always like what you read in this book, nearly all of the advice is on target based on my 19 years of experience in the corporate world. The contents ranges from the fairly obvious(don't make your boss look bad)to the more subtle landmines that should be avoided at all costs.

This book will be especially valuable to someone at an earlier stage in their career as experienced folks may have learned many of these lessons through the school of hard knocks. Even though much of the content did not come as a surprise to me personally, I still found valuable tips, a few new insights, and if nothing else the book provided a clear and concise reinforcement of career learnings that I've gained up to this point. The book is a relatively brief read and I would recommend it to anyone seeking to earn a living in a corporate environment.

5 out of 5 stars Reads like a corporate manual.......2007-02-20

If you work anyplace that has a lot of managers or is big enough to have an HR department, you should buy and read this book.

Book Description

A unique and humorous—and also uniquely practical—approach to the increasingly popular study of Qabalah. This is a seriously funny book! Learn the basics of Qabalah in spite of yourself! Traditional Qabalistic (or Cabalistic, or, indeed, Kabbalistic—read this book to find out what the difference is…we know you've always wondered) sources tend to be a bit, er, dry. DuQuette spices up the Qabalah and makes it come alive, restoring the joy of learning the fundamentals of this admittedly arcane system by using simple, amusing anecdotes and metaphors. This account, written psuedepigraphically (fictitiously attributed to a supposed authority), allows DuQuette as Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford to soar to outrageous heights and, when necessary, stand apart from the silliness to highlight the golden eggs of Qabalistic wisdom nested therein. Sure to be a revelation to those all who think that teaching about the Qabalah needs to be tedious and serious, DuQuette shows that great truths can be transmitted through the medium of laughter.

The most accessible and best place to start to study this oft confusing and difficult topic.

5 out of 5 stars FIVE-STAR Book On Qabalah For Beginners.......2007-09-18

Archbishop DuQuette has been teaching Qabalah for many years; he explains this complex Hebrew magical system in clear and straightforward language. I have heard many of my friends say that this book really taught them Qabalah when they could not figure it out from other sources. Any student of Jewish Mysticism will appreciate this book. 5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-02-07

I've read a couple of books on Qabalah and I thought I knew quite a lot on the subject so I put off buying this book for a long time. I like Lon Duquette so eventually I got around to reading it anyway.

Wow! This is a very good look at Qabalah, the Tree of Life, and the Tarot. If you like Lon be sure you get this book, you won't be disappointed!

The DVD "Tarot, Qabalah, and Oracles" is basically this book on DVD. If you like the book I recommend you check out the DVD too.

5 out of 5 stars GOD HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR TOO!.......2006-11-06

In this oddly-named work, Rabbi Lamed Ben Clifford (the alter ego of occult author-humorist, Lon Milo Duquette) proves that illumination can be achieved by appreciating the "Universal Joke". Anyone who has ever attempted to plumb the depths of the esoteric study of the Kabbalah (Cabala? Qabalah?) already knows that it is obscure, complex, boring and hardly something you could describe as 'funny'. Yet, it is the golden esoteric essence of Judism. The best comedians in the world have been (and ARE) Jews. Spiritual comedy is in our souls. Ben Clifford not only makes practical qabalistic principals understandable, he does so through the medium of profoundly (and sometimes corny) outrageous humor. Just take a look at the reviews from the Qabalah snobs who prove Ben Clifford's point by not getting the point. If you can't unveil the Divine humor in your own spirituality, my friends, how do you expect to ever unravel the mysteries of the universe? Sorry guys. I'm a Jew too! and this is hands down the best first book on Kabbalah (Cabala, Qabalah ..... it doesn't matter) ever written. Six stars if I could!

5 out of 5 stars THE CHICKEN QABALAH BY LON MILO DUQUETTE.......2006-08-20

I am a big fan of DuQuette's book and I have loved everyone that I have read so far. The Chicken Qabalah was no exception and is most definitely recommended. I particularly enjoyed the section on the Hebrew alphabet and found it to be of particular value as an introduction to the Hebrew alphabet. However, the parts on the `Tree of Life' and the Tetragrammaton are also particularly useful. My only critique on the book is that it sometimes feels as if DuQuette goes a bit overboard on the humour aspect of his effort.

Book Description

God has always made a way for mankind. It's His nature. But many times we think we have to make the way ourselves. It's not until we realize that we don't know what to do that we are able to hear God's voice. God Will Make a Way is an approach to specific problems in the Christian's life, but more than that, it's a new approach to solving life itself. Drs. Cloud and Townsend introduce ten "life principles" and then demonstrate how eighteen real-world dilemmas are solved by their application. The book concludes with a plan to encourage each reader to develop a personal strategy for using these principles to bring about life-changing healing.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Content.......2007-10-05

Here is one with real meat. So many books are 95% fluff and 5% content. Here is one with a nugget on every page, including real-life advice for anyone who is working their way through a relationship challenge. Yes!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-06-09

I have read through or at least attempted to read through a number of books, mostly Christian books for spiritual growth. I feel closer to God when I devote my time to knowing his ways and reading helpful and inspiring Christian books that show us/teach us how to live a life that is pleasing to him. I have read this book twice and each time I discover more things. I have donated many books to libraries or sold them but this book deserves to be kept in my library collection. Even if certain trials or principles do not apply to my current life, it is great to have as a reference and to share with others who are going through trials listed in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful or not? Depends.......2007-05-20

I can understand why the previous reviewers shared very diverse opinion of the book. The supporters focused on how well the authors made use of their professional knowledge and writting skill to discuss eight godly principles on solving twelve key areas of life's problem. The opposers primarily complained that it's too shallow and did not help at all. IMHO, this book did point to the direction of help or even salvation, which is God. Those who know God well and just need a little advice or hint will find the book useful. However, it is not the solution itself and so those who want a shortcut and without a solid faith are disappointed for sure. Nevertheless, as a believer in Christ and a book lover, I am obliged to comment that it is a relatively good book of its kind. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This book began my healing from abuse.......2006-06-30

I was in an emotionally abusive relationship but didn't know it. And as a man, it made it harder for me because men aren't very likely to be seen as victims of abuse. So I was confused, disoriented to the max, and didn't have a clue about who to turn to or what to do. And even though I am a devout Christian, just my belief in God was not enough by itself to show me what I could not see in front of me. I also believe that God designed us so that we need to be in relationship with each other, helping each other and that He does a bulk of His work through others.

So one day I was scanning the radio dial for help and came across Dr. Townsend's radio counseling show. Then I heard them mention their book, "What To Do When You Don't Know What To Do" That's the ONLY thing that I knew to do, so I called up and ordered it.

It's simple, maybe simplistic, yes. It asks you to rely on God, yes. But for me, at that moment, all I could grasp was something simple. And if for some reason you're opposed to God or relying on Him (but why would you???), then you could still glean the messages from it which are still valid on practical levels.

The part of the book that when I got to, threw a lifeline to me was the part that said, "If you don't know what to do, get more information". A light bulb went off and I knew that a great part of my paralysis to any movement forward to healing was because I just plain didn't know anything about what I was feeling. That little step was just the key and then I began researching like crazy on the internet and slowly, albeit reluctantly, I began to understand what my condition was and how it had been created. Of course, that led to what to do about it, also.

But truly, sometimes - maybe often - we just don't have a clue about ourselves, our situation, others, or what we're feeling or experiencing. This book is for those times. At those times we need a simplistic approach - a very basic approach. That's why this book was a life saver to me and probably to many others. And again, if you've got a thing against God, or even having God in your life, then why even write a review?

This book is titled very correctly. It's not for those like the reviewers below who have an idea about what they think they need and how that should look and sound. It's for those of us who truly are at a loss as to where to even begin. This was a miraculous book in a simple, little book's clothing.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing!.......2006-06-04

I was saddened to see a few negative reviews of this book. One or two were so negative it was obvious the reviewers still hadn't found any help or healing. I for one found this book to be a lifesaver during a crisis in my life. I had been dealing (not well) with feelings of hopelessness and great personal dissapointments and even considering divorce when I discovered this book. Yes, it is a Christian book - and personal faith in God is the cornerstone of what is presented here. But truth is truth, and I can attest only to the fact that the truth presented here changed my life and gave me hope when I had none. It also explained so much of what I was experiencing and gave me logical steps to follow to become healthy. I am very grateful to both of these authors and now own several of their books. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Book Description

Endometriosis can disrupt women's lives. It is responsible for chronic, sometimes crippling pain, hundreds of thousands of missed work hours, and in its most extreme cases, infertility.

There is hope! Thomas L. Lyons, M.D., whose philosophy is to "treat the patient, not the disease," has developed leading edge surgical techniques to address endometriosis.

Dr. Lyons demystifies this puzzling disease, covering issues from fertility to dietary concerns, alternative treatments to surgical options but the main focus is on the key issue of pain management for this potentially debilitating disease.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book portrays Jews as superficial and materialistic!.......2007-01-28

I AM a Jew, and I am appalled at some of the statements in this book, such as the one on page 72: "Study is still heavily promoted among Jews. But the purpose is no longer to be closer to God but instead to get a job that lets you buy closer to the beach."

The authors' attempts to be cutesy also fall flat, as on page 42, "Things to do in temple...Pick out best-and worst-dressed people in the crowd. Whisper comments to neighbors," or page 54, "A typical Hanukkah Haul...Night 8: Something so meager that Jenny was happy that Hanukkah was finally over."

Why are the authors perpetuating some of the ugliest stereotypes about Jews, especially the idea that Jews worship money, status and material possessions above all else?

I come from a huge extended family of Jews, mainly Conservative and Reform, and most of us liberal Democrats, and I assure you, not one of us is as superficial as you portray. My parents, aunts and uncles, and grandparents stressed education and exposure to music and other cultural arts for their own sake, and because in this time, in this country, we Jews can learn and become anything we want to, without fear for our lives. Shame on the authors for taking that for granted.

1 out of 5 stars A perversion of Jewish values.......2006-06-13

So let me get this straight, the author is trying to strengthen the Jewish faith by... making it even easier to marry out. It doesn't take much of a Yiddishe Kop to work out that anything aiding the destruction of Judaism cannot be expressing it truthfully. I am sure that this book might help some intermarried people deal with their issues, but the approach and normative tone of this book is so at odds with its content that it almost renders it null.

As the product of an intermarriage, I can tell you that it is far better to for a non-jewish spouse to learn honestly about Judaism from an authentic source than from one which attempts to legitimise a less-than-ideal situation. In that vein I would reccommend something like Hayim Halevy Donin's 'To Be A Jew'.

Perhaps the author should have written a companion volume: Celebrating Christmas with your Grandchildren: Everything an Assimilated Jew Needs to Know, from Jesus to Midnight Mass.

5 out of 5 stars This Catholic Girl loved this Book! .......2005-06-07

For a Catholic Girl, about to be engaged to a Nice Jewish Boy, this book saved me countless questions at every family meal! I read the book right before Passover and it was a wonderful source of info for that and all the High Holy days! My boyfriend laughed out loud at some of the narrative, and agreed with all the facts. In all seriousness, I was lost the first time I went to a Sabbath. I was so out of my element I was shy, and afraid to speak for fear of making an unforgivable error. That made for a very uncomfortable evening for all concerned. But after reading this book, not only did I lighten up, but I understood why we were doing certain things, and I was confident enough to really participate in the reading of the Haggadah. For a girl who is used to Amen's and Hail Mary's it was a delight to be able to participate. Sharing in my Fiancé's culture was even more wonderful! I have no intention to convert, but I can certainly use this book as a reference guide for our wedding as well!
Dating a Jew? Pick this up!

4 out of 5 stars Fully converted.......2004-12-14

Ok, well it doesn't tell you everything you need to know when you are partnering with a person of the Jewish faith, but it does find ways to prepare you for the things you will see and hear in the months to come. I was raised Catholic, but my father's mother was Jewish and so I was familiar with the customs and such of the Jewish faith, but I needed a crash course in how to move from being familiar with customs to celebrating them with my partner and understanding where the faith that I love so much in them comes from. I also recommend making a meeting with a Rabbi to discuss any feeling or questions you might have about living your life with a person of the Jewish faith. I am now converted fully and thanks to this book, I am now reading books about Jewish weddings and I'm less than 10 months away from my wedding day!

5 out of 5 stars Rings true page after page.......2004-07-06

Let a Jew read this book, they will laugh out loud. It's full of jokes that ring so true, you may even blush. However, it's also an extremely useful guide for non-Jews looking to learn a bit about Jewish religion and culture.

That said, please don't misunderstand. This is a fun readable book, not a serious reference work. If you need training in Talmudic interpretation, this isn't the book for you.

We were lost before DIVORCE EMPOWERMENT!

This guidebook is doing for us what no other divorce book or lawyer has been able to do. (It was enthusiastically recommended to us by a friend in North Carolina after he saw how miraculously it helped his divorcing clients.) Aside from being incredibly comprehensive, superbly organized, clearly written, and continually uplifting, DIVORCE EMPOWERMENT has features not found elsewhere. It has easily walked us through exactly how to adapt the legal facts so they were specific to our state of Illinois --- pure genius!

Thanks to Linda Power, an innovative --- yet wise, respectful author.

EVERYTHING in ONE BOOK for ALL AMERICANS!

    5 out of 5 stars Well-written, easy to understand - NY specific + more.......2003-11-06

There are no accidents: I met the author of this book when she had just received her first copies from the publisher; I was floundering trying to get accurate information about what to do, when and how to do it. Lawyers, legal referrals, community organizations and friends were trying to "help" by offering advice, much of it well-intended but inaccurate and COSTLY, both in the short- and long-term.

Linda Power's book is easy to read, well-organized, well-written, has excellent cross references, and nudges of positivism throughout: it has been both a life and time saver. It helped me to understand the legal terminology with which I was unfamiliar, and to be aware of the pitfalls of the legal system, specifically in relation to women's issues in matters of divorce and family law.

I recommend this book to others who are going through the divorce process whether you initiate it or are on the receiving end [KNOW what your attorney and the courts are saying to you, and what you might expect] and to attorneys who would like their clients to be well-informed and prepared. And shouldn't that be all attorneys...?

5 out of 5 stars UNIQUELY EFFECTIVE TOOL.......2003-08-08

At last! A clear, organized, informative --- yet enjoyable and inspirational --- guidebook that effectively addresses the wide-ranging needs of my clients and supports them through the entire divorce process.

5 out of 5 stars Professionals and Clients RAVING about REMARKABLE BOOK!.......2003-08-05

"DIVORCE EMPOWERMENT: What You Need To Know, Do, And Say" is without a doubt, the most remarkable book on the market! My clients are from four different states and have varying needs. They are all RAVING about this comprehensive, easy-to-use guidebook. DIVORCE EMPOWERMENT addresses all facets of marital breakup. Legal and financial specifics are clearly explained, great empowerment techniques are sprinkled throughout, and realistic strategies are presented. Tough tasks are made easy by using the uniquely designed "Organizers." Hundreds of confusing legal words and terms are simplified. The Glossary (Terms of Divorce) alone is worth the price of the book. This well-organized and thoughtful resource is respectful of individual circumstances and sensitive to real needs, while at the same time remarkably informative and empowering. Divorcing Americans no longer need to feel so overwhelmed --- DIVORCE EMPOWERMENT has finally arrived!

4 out of 5 stars Vocabulary to Conquer the Divorce Process.......2003-07-17

Divorce Empowerment provided me with the vocabulary of the technical aspects of divorce which I knew nothing about. After reading, I felt particularly well equipped in areas that had intimated me previously, particularly the legal and financial concerns.

I would recommend Divorce Empowerment to anyone who is in a position where they need answers to their questions as well as to know what other questions and issues need to be addressed before it is to late.

Thornton brings more than a decade of experience in human resources and financial education to an extremely emotional issue. And she gives vulnerable people easy-to-use tools for avoiding…or dealing with…crooks and crooked business.

The Survivor's Guide: What You Need To Know & What You Need To Do When Someone Close To You Dies by journalist and consumer advocate V. K. Thornton is a practical manual to coping with the difficult decisions that face people dealing with the end of a loved one's life. Emphasizing the point of "don't rush - you have more time to act than you think," The Survivor's Guide teaches the reader how not to be taken advantage of at a time when strong emotion can blind one to funeral business overcharging. From the hours after learning of a death in the family, to disposing of the body, planning a memorial service, dealing with the estate left behind and more, The Survivor's Guide is a very highly recommended guide especially focusing upon monetary realities arising from a death in the family.

My Dad passed away suddenly and I was not sure what to do first. My friend recommended this book and it was great. It really told me what to do and what to think about each step along the way. It told me things to watch out for for from funeral directors and the writer was right! His advice about settling the estate was also useful. Everyone needs to read this book!

    Book Description

From a leading medical expert at Johns Hopkins, here is an up-to-the-minute, definitive guide to whats known about depression and how it can be treated.

Around ten percent of North Americans suffer from depression at some point -- and more than half havent even sought help. Now, Dr. Raymond DePaulo, one of the worlds foremost authorities on depression, provides a sensitive, thorough, and reassuring book for sufferers from depression and those who care about them. This practical guide for individuals with depression and their families -- the only totally comprehensive book in the market -- shows readers how to identify the problem, then directs them to the various forms of treatment, including medications, psychotherapy, support groups, and exercise. It is one of the few books to discuss in depth manic depression, the bipolar form of depression. Dr. DePaulo discusses both mainstream (the latest medications and talk therapies) and alternative paths and reveals the truth about the dangerous fallacies that abound about depression. Comprehensive, compassionate, and grounded in the very latest research into brain chemistry, psychology, and medications, this is a definitive, landmark roadmap to one of the most devastating -- and common -- mental illnesses.

Excellent. This man is brilliant. After 12 years of depression he is the only doctor who correctly treated my daughter.

    5 out of 5 stars A stepping off point.......2006-07-17

I have major depressive disorder. This book helped me understand the science of how the brain works with the various chemicals and drugs. As far as the experience or treatment, there wasn't much that I found personally relevant or didn't already know or that went into enough depth for me.

The book is a basic guide to understanding depression and does not offer any sort of cure or ideal treatment plan. That's not the point of it. The information is presented categorically and clearly with the resources cited, should you like to go further. The more common methods of treatment are presented with explanations of how they work and why.

However, this book was an excellent resource for the other people in my life who have been affected by my depression. They don't need or want to know all about the treatment options and experience in great depth. They do need to know some of the why's and how's and that it's not their fault. My parents found it to be quite helpful in understanding what was happening with me.

    5 out of 5 stars A+ Book. Now there's a new therapy-Vagus Nerve Stimulation.......2005-03-14

This is an excellent book that I would highly recommend for anyone struggling with the depression. However, since publication of the marvelous book, the FDA has approved vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic depression. Vagus nerve stimulation is NOW the mainstream treatment for chronic or recurrent depression. Patients and their families should educate themselves about this remarkable treatment-it could change their life. I would recommend the book-"Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression". It's a must read for anyone struggling with the grips of the terrible disease.

3 out of 5 stars A Biased View on Treating Depression.......2005-01-30

"Understanding Depression" is a clear and concise view of the illness through the eyes of "a psychiatrist who has seen in consultation, teaching, research, and treatment settings some 8,000 people with clinical depression and manic-depressive illness."

Dr. J. Raymond DePaulo Jr., M.D. is not only a psychiatrist, but also a psychiatry professor and the director of the Affective Mental Disorder Clinic at John Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. DePaulo has written a cogent book at what it means to suffer from depression and its possible causes. The psychiatrist also covers various aspects of manic-depression, but the lion's share of the book covers the illness of depression. Despite numerous advances in medical science, we are still not clear on what causes depression. Dr. DePaulo states, "No one system, organ, or other factor is responsible for depression - not one steroid, not one gene, not one neurotransmitter, and not a lesion on one side of the brain or the other. What we seem to have is...a stew with lots of different and exotic ingredients."

Where the book becomes shortsighted is within the sections dealing with the treatment of depression. The doctor advocates the use of traditional and cutting-edge medication as the cure for the vast majority of people throughout the book. It is not surprising that a psychiatrist does not go in depth concerning alternatives to drug therapies, but Dr. DePaulo covers only an astonishing 9 pages regarding alternative treatments such as exercise, nutrition, or talk therapy. In fact, large portions of the text read like a long pharmaceutical advertisement.

In the end, "Understanding Depression" is an invaluable guide to just that, understanding depression. However, the latter part of the subtitle, "What You Can Do About It," is a biased view of a psychiatrist whose only remedy are pills despite this "cure" entailing ineffectiveness and serious side-effects for a significant portion of the recipients.

5 out of 5 stars an Excellent Resource.......2004-08-06

If you're looking to learn about depression, this is an EXCELLENT book to begin with. DePaulo does a great job of explaining what depression is (and isn't) and what we do and don't know about it.

He explores the causes of depression and he's not afraid to say when something isn't 100% certain. The truth is, they're still learning so much about the causes of depression that I'm very suspicious of anyone who claims to know exactly what causes it or how best to treat it.

Also, the book reads well.. his writing style is very conversational. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is trying to understand what depression is and the options one has in dealing with it.
