Book Description
Deep within each one of us lies the ability to step up and care for those in need, even though we often feel overwhelmed by a complex world. In fact, more than 200 million people throughout the world offer their time and love to volunteering. The stories in Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul highlight the efforts of everyday people in the United States and around the globe who volunteer with the American Red Cross, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, the Peace Corps, Points of Light, Rotary and many, many other nonprofit organizations. Lovingly chosen from more than six thousand stories, poems and cartoons, these tales will inspire readers to do everything in their power to help those in need. Chapters include: The Rewards of Volunteering, Giving Back, Making a Difference, New Appreciation, Love and Kindness, Defining Moments, A Matter of Perspective, Overcoming Obstacles and On Wisdom. Readers will cherish the story of a community that rallied together to send warm winter coats to refugee families in Kosovo. They'll be moved by the tale of a woman with a "smiley voice" who made audiotapes for the visually impaired despite a losing battle with cancer. They'll never forget the eight-year-old boy without arms or legs who fearlessly wielded a tennis racquet to propel a ball down the length of a room. And they'll be charmed by a rabbit named Cadberi who brings boundless joy to residents of a nursing home. Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul will leave an indelible imprint on the heart of readers and inspire them to go forth and care for others.

Inspired to Volunteer.......2004-06-08
I just finished "Chicken Soup for the Volunteer Soul," which is an excellent and inspirational book. Also, a few weeks ago, I went on a Social and Service Justice Retreat. Since reading this book, making the retreat, and other inevitable signs, I feel inspired to find a place to volunteer.

I am a volunteer my self at the my cities animal shelter. And I am going to let the president of the volunteers borrow it after I am done. I hope they make more about volunteering.
An Insightful Invitation to Volunteers.......2003-01-11
I would recommend reading "Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul" to anyone who has a sincere interest in his fellowmen and possesses the capacity to relate to the needs, sorrows, and joys of others. I was impressed by the work's intent, format, and content. The selections are comprehensive and meaningful, offering a wide range of volunteer experiences for the information, delight, compassion, and consideration to the book's readers. Hopefully, this publication will encourage countless individuals to find the necessary reason and desire to give of their own time, talents, and hearts to those in need in our society. For others, it will provide an understanding of the wonderful gifts of volunteering for the volunteer.
Thanks to everyone who read!.......2002-10-31
I contributed a story to this book about my daughter's tender heart for others. I have always been proud of her desire to help others and Chicken Soup gave me the opportunity to share it with the world. This book made me proud to be an American and to be allowed to live in this wonderful country that cares about it's neighbors. This collection of stories will enlighten anyone to give unselfishly to the needy or to those who have less. What a great feeling inside to be a part of it all!

Book Description
This latest offering in the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul series explores a host of challenges faced by today's teens. Within its pages teens will find portraits of life's complexities expressed from the viewpoint of their peers. Teen contributors share their thoughts and feelings on difficult issues, ranging from poor self-image to thoughts of suicide, from family discord to coping with the loss, from peer pressure to school violence. Teens ranked stress as one of their top concerns (along with child abuse and STDs). Oftentimes, the pressure can feel overwhelming, whether they involve worrying about an upcoming test, competition sports, family responsibilities, dating, or more extreme issues such as depression, suicide and school violence. The first three volumes of the Teenage Soul series and the companion journal illustrate the ongoing popularity of this series (unit sales exceed 11 million). Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff and the Spring 2001 release Teenage Soul Letters will undoubtedly follow suit as the next best-sellers in a phenomenally popular series.

I really enjoyed reading this book being a teenager myself. It was very inspirational and touching. It is a good book for teenagers in any situation. I think it would be good for parents to read this book also because they could have a better understanding of what their teenager might be going through. This book talked about issues that are harder to talk about. It provides anonymous help lines for teenagers in need. The tops range from life to death. It is a very uplifting book for all.

All teens will love it but I have to warn you there are many sad parts and are very powerful so I think you should think about it first. If you're sure you want to buy it well go, you won't be dissapionted!

Book Description
A soldier swears an oath to uphold the constitution and protect our country, while a soldier's spouse takes the unwritten oath to a life of constant moves, lengthy separations and endless anxieties. Their commitment requires a unique blend of patriotism, dedication, hard work and, most of all, flexibility. The stories in Chicken Soup for the Military Wife's Soul, written by soldier's wives and the courageous women who themselves serve in the military, speak directly to those who live the life, understand the jargon and thrive on the joys and challenges of military life. These stories celebrate the spirit of women who unite with kindred spirits and strangers to raise families, maintain homes and uphold the most positive attitudes when facing the fears of losing a loved one. This book is a tribute to all the women who daily uphold the written and unwritten oaths of service and of marriage. Key Features Unlike other books about military lifestyle that are guides to coping, this book offers comfort and support to women. In these stories spouses pour out their hearts with examples of how they overcome fear and anxiety while concerned for the safety of their loved ones who are far from home, protecting our freedom. Chapters include: I Miss You So, Raising Military Brats, Honey, We've Got Orders, An Officer At The Door, Holidays: Military Style, Red, White and Blue. Inspiring stories celebrate the lives of military wives and spouses and the special bond that unites them while supporting each other as they share similar experiences.

Perfect for any Military Wive.......2007-08-28
This book is touching, compassionate and reinforces why our country is so great! Have a box of tissues near by this one is a tear jerker!
Wonderful as always!.......2007-08-16
Once again a chicken soup book is great! As a wife of a deployed soldier, this book helps me keep a positive and uplifted spirit. I would reccomend this book to any military wife.
Biased Military Wife.......2007-06-26
It's probably because my husband is in the military and he's not with me right now, but I enjoyed each of these stories, even if some of them plucked at my heart strings a bit too close to home. I read this book on a plane, which I do not recommend! I had to hide every sniffle. Of course, these stories are sometimes a bit cheesy and "feel good," but it's called Chicken Soup for the Soul for a reason.
Love it!.......2007-06-13
I HATE to read. Typically it bores me and puts me to sleep. With that said, I somehow ran across this book on-line. I read the Amazon reviews and decided to give it a try. I got the book and in one sitting read half of the book straight through. I was addicted to it! I honestly could not put it down. Even the section on "Raising Military Brats" I read although I do not have any children. My husband has 13 months left of his tour in Iraq and it was somewhat comforting to read about WWI or WWII wives who, in their husband's two year deployment, maybe received one letter, if at all. It made me appreciate what I have, even though what I want is thousands of miles away. I definitely recommend it for any military wife.
Military Spouses-One's of God's greatest creations:).......2007-06-01
I bought this book knowing that it would be filled with heart felt stories by military spouses, like myself. I have to say that there were many times I found myself in a daze from some of the stories and by the time I realized it, I would have a tear running down my cheek. Not just anyone can relate to these stories, it takes a special person to completely understand and appreciate what a military spouse does. These stories have helped me to cope with my husband's deployements and they give me the strength to survive during those times. I would recommend this book to all, especially those who have no affiliation with the military. It will give you just a small look into the priceless, but chaotic days we call our lives.

Book Description
Previously available only through free distribution to prisons, this life-changing book is the result of charitable donations from sales of Chicken Soup for the Christian Family Soul and gifts from thousands of individuals. In the spring of 2000, over 100,000 copies of Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul were distributed to prisoners, prison libraries and prison ministries throughout the United States. The hope was that this collection of stories would touch the hearts of prisoners and offer them hope and encouragement, as well as inspire them to transcend the limiting thinking and behaviors of their past. The book was so successful that the co-authors soon found themselves flooded with requests for the book from family members, correctional officers, prison volunteers and others. Because of this huge demand, the decision was made to also release the book to the general public.

Giving Peace to My Loved One.......2007-05-14
This book has really touched my loved one who is incarcerated. He has really enjoyed it and stated that the stories really give the extra step he needs sometimes.
prisoners soul.......2007-01-30
I sent this book to my son who is incarcerated. He has read over half the book so far. He said the book is great. That it really gives him something to think about. He says the book should be manatory reading for everybody who is in a jail. He thinks the officers in charge of the prisoners should read it also, then maybe the harassment would stop.
Another Winner! .......2007-01-09
Great recreational read! I sent it to my husband! I cried through some stories and smiled through others, just as I have with any other Chicken Soup book!
Extremely Pleased and Thankful!.......2005-10-27
I personally did not read this book, however, I sent it to my 27 year old son who at the time was incarcerated as a result of a mix up with stolen identity (his ID having been stolen and used for criminal activities). It was an extremely difficult & spiritually frustrating time for him! This book made a tremendous difference and impact on his decision to rededicate his life to the Lord and allowing Him (Jesus Christ and God our Father) to "help" my son. My son derived much strength from the life stories of others, such as Chuck Colson, as well as all those that contributed their personal stories, in knowing that God is still on the thrown and has not forgotten those in the judicial prision/jail systems and that they are loved as much as those on the outside. My son said I could not have sent him a greater gift at the time. He also has shared it with many of the inmates who were interested in knowing how much the Lord loves them REGARDLESS of their circumstances, what we have done in life, as well as what we have not done in life to please the Lord. It helped many men and I am very grateful for the book and how quickly it was shipped!! That was a very important aspect as well since my son was in such a state of depression and needed some inspiration, hope, guidance and just plain down to earth stories about life in this difficult world. It helped him to keep on keeping on and having faith that God has a purpose for everything. Life catches us by surprise most of the time, however, it never catches the Lord by surprise. My son needed to know that it rains on the just and the unjust in this world, and it shines on the just and the unjust in this world (taken from the Bible). God is no respector of persons and this book clearly reveals that, but, he is a God of LOVE and he loves all his creations, including those that don't necessarily need a "hand out" but a "hand up" which are usually those incarcerated. Not all in the prison system want a get out of jail free. They just want justice done and this book allowed them, through the stories of those individual lives to know there is a "just God" in this world. Thanks for allowing me this opportunity to share my opinion/review and I hope it will benefit anyone interested in possibly purchasing this book!
BEST BOOK I EVER READ.......2005-05-25
I FOUND THIS BOOK ON AMAZON AFTER JUST BROWSING AROUND. MY SON IS IN PRISON IN UPSTATE NEW YORK AND I SENT HIM A COPY. HE TOLD ME HE GOT THE BOOK BUT NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING ELSE. WELL THE OTHER DAY HE CALLED AND SAID "OH BY THE WAY YOU KNOW THAT BOOK THAT YOU SENT ME A FEW MONTHS AGO CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PRISONERS SOUL WELL ITS THE BEST BOOK I EVER EVER READ". IT IS SO INSPIRATIONAL AND HE SAID IT HELPS HIM THROUGH SOME DEPRESSING TIMES. HE HAS PASSED IT AROUND HIS PRISION DORM AND EVERY ONE TELLS HIM HOW THEY LOVED THE BOOK. HE EVEN GOT INSPIRED TO WRITE POEMS AND SEND IT IN TO THE AUTHOR WHO TAKES POEMS AND STORIES FROM PRISIONERS AROUND THE COUNTRY. HE AS WELL AS I HAVE READ THE SAME STORIES OVER AND OVER AND NEVER GET TIRED OF READING THEM.

Inspired by the many readers of Chicken Soup for the Kid's Soul (one of many in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series), the authors decided to reach out to young people at that incredibly confusing, exciting chapter of life, the preteen years. Readers between the ages of 9 and 12 (give or take a year) sometimes felt that the book for kids was too young, while the edition for teens (Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul) was too old. In this warm, supportive anthology of true stories by and about preteens, the very issues that seem so complicated and insurmountable are addressed with intelligence and openness. Divorce, violence, death, friendships, school, family, attitudes, changes, dreams... preteens have a lot to offer and a lot to learn on these subjects. Many of the brief essays, cartoons, quotations, and introductions are witty as well as wise and touching; readers might devour the book from start to finish, drop in for a story here and there, or focus on a concern that is most important at the moment. The preteen years seem to be the perfect time to reach kids, before they are lost in teen angst and coolness. And who better to learn from than their own peers? For some added incentive to read, celebrities such as Mia Hamm, Karl Malone, and 'N Sync have contributed essays as well. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
From remembering their own life experience or to watching their own children grow, most people recognize that the preteen years, ages nine to thirteen, can be one of the most awkward times in life-a period of tremendous physical and emotional change. At this age, youngsters are eager to leave the "kid" stage, yet are uncertain about what adolescence will bring; they'd rather listen to peers over parents, and hear all too often to "wait until you're older." Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul will guide kids through this transition. Written by and for preteens, this uplifting collection of stories touches on the emotions and situations they experience every day: making and losing friends, fitting in while keeping their personal identity, discovering the opposite sex, dealing with pressures at school including violence, and coping with family issues such as divorce. Chapters include: On Love, On Family, On Friendship, On Choices, On Changes, On Overcoming Obstacles, Eclectic Wisdom, Tough Stuff, Attitude and Perspective and Achieving Dreams. Contributors indclude: *NSYNC, Mia Hamm, Beverley Mitchell and Karl Malone. Whether first-time Chicken Soup readers or "graduates" of the bestselling Kid's Soul book, preteens are sure to include this in their backpacks and book bags.
Customer Reviews:
Chicken Soup is good for different kinds of people.......2007-09-30
My dad had bought for me the book "Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul". I enjoyed the book because the stories were real. Now, I like looking at people's opinions for books after I read them. I like to see negative opinions first. Now, I would like to say that I except these people's comments. I would like to explain something. There are many people in this world who have different reactions to different things. Some people are sensitive to sad stories more than others. Some people are afraid and worried about sad stories\ scary stories than other people. So... just because you, your daughter, you son or anyone else is afraid or sensitive about some story doesn't mean it's a bad book. It just means that you or your relative shouldn't read these kind of stories. I want to say something about the book. I'd like to say that I am also sensitive to sad stories but these stories here teach lessons. Like about death. Always say "I love you" to your loved ones because you never know what can happen between now and tomorrow. "Chicken Soup" has stories of knowing between right and wrong, stories about good friends and so many other stories with lessons. Though, I'll confess. There are one or two stories that are not for our age and things that I'd rather not hear but when I get to the next story I try to forget the bad story and I do because the good stories have so many feelings and emotions in them that I forget about all the bad stories that I read. I reccommend this book to anyone because this book has lessons that us, preteens need to know about.
Encouraging reflective thinking.......2007-05-28
At our school site the Daily Bulletin is read by administrators. It combines important news with a brief selection whose purpose is to focus student attention on the importance of making right life choices. Unfortunately the anecdotal references and language used would be appropriate perhaps with students of two or more generations past and their point or moral is lost as students and many of the younger teachers are wondering who Horatio Alger or Thoreau or Rousseau are/were? Some teachers are starting a movement for a new text adoption and would wish to use any of the Canfield stories, albeit in an abbreviated form. We feel these narratives would resonate so much more effectively with our students.
Imagine all of your Answers in This Book.......2007-01-26
Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul is full of stories made just for girls and boys. All of the stories are inspirational in someway. This book is liked by a lot of people because there are sad stories, happy stories, and even funny stories. One of my favorite stories is"Where in the World is Carmen." This inspiring story is about a ten year old girl Ashley and her new bear Carmen. Ashley and her family were watching a movie about a man who hitchhiked across the USA. Ashley wanted to do this, but of course the answer was no. Later that year Ashley was diagnosed with cancer. She lost a lot of confidence, and became a shy girl. One day her parents came into the room with her new best friend Carmen the stuffed bear. Her parents had an idea. Carmen was going to explore the USA. Ashley wrote in a small diary about Carmen. Everyone was supposed to write about her. In September she was sent home from Hawaii. Carmen had been to 13 different states. In her travel box was there was tons of memories about where Carmen had been, who she was with, and what she did. Carmen was shipped out again this time around the world. Ashley did get to hitchhike around the world with her bear Carmen. This was my favorite story in the whole book.
I have been threw many things in my life and this book has always allowed me to lean on it when I need a hand. All of the stories are about real life which makes it even easier to read because you know this happened to someone, and sometimes you can understand. If something happens to you and there is a similar story you can always take direction from that story. Sometimes it helps sometimes it doesn't.
This book is just for young girls and boys. It has problems about girls and boys. This helps so much because of what we go through. Most of these stories are written about girls and boys or by girls and boys. I really do love this book and I hope you will to.
chicken soup.......2006-12-01
Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul is a book full of incredible stories of hope and miracles. These stories are meant to inspire and give hope. They teach about how love can conquer, and hate will get you nothing. How you need to really look inside a person to find the heart, and not to judge a book by its cover. I would recommend these stories.
I would recommend these stories because some of them are just good stories. Tales that keep the pages turning; tales that draw tears and laughter. Some of the stories go a little over the edge with emotion, but most are very good.
I cannot comment on the author's style of writing, because this book is a collection of stories sent in by people all over America. Some are written by adults about their preteen years, and some are written by preteens themselves, so the way the stories are written changes. Some are long poems, and others are simply sentences from many people, piled together to create a chapter. Some of the writing is very professional, while others are not. All of them get the message through.
This book is divided into chapters, each chapter telling about a different subject. Some of them are love, friendship, family, and overcoming obstacles. Each chapter is full of tales, all different from one another. All ranging from evil teachers, to overcoming cancer, to making an unexpected friend. All fitting into place like the pieces of a puzzle, creating the picture that is Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul.
This book does not only have stories from incredible kids from around America, but also has stories told by people we all know well. Like Mia Hamm, an amazing player for the Pilots. People who are now well known for something incredible they did also wrote in this book, like the story of the little girl who stared Vest-A-Dog. But my favorite of these tales are the ones written by everyday people who went through very unordinary things.
One of the most tear-jerking stories was the one about a boy and his friend, who decided to go on a skiing trip. One of them decided to take a break and go get hot chocolate, while his friend kept going. His friend, who was still skiing, ended up falling in the perfectly wrong way, that ended up making him brain dead. That boy died. The scariest part is that that could happen any day to anybody doing anything they always did. Yet that boy, who lost his best friend, doesn't stop skiing, he keeps doing what he loves, for his friend, and for the fact that it is just as likely to happen to him walking down the stairs.
I would recommend this book to people who have lost something very important to them. It is a way to see that you are not alone, and so many people go through the same thing. Yet I also recommend it to people who have lost nothing, so that they can be grateful for what the have, and realize that only friendship and love last forever, not the person you are friends with and love. So if you need to laugh, cry, or just read a good book, pick up Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul.

True inspiration.......2007-07-26
The stories in this book are true inspiration. I have decided to give it to my 20 year old granddaughter, as I feel this is the best gift I could possibly give to her.
My Opinion.......2007-05-18
No book touched my soul (pardon the pun) like this one did. I have read better books, however perhaps none more valuable. The story of the little so called crippled boy and the puppy in the dog store, WOW. The authors let us know to stop blaming everyone for our life. Our parents where probably average, SO WHAT! Get on with it. Many people overcome a tough childhood to become successful. This book is full of such stories. It awesome.

While the book is not bad, the authors will give you the irritating feeling that they have milked this cow for all it is worth. Where does it end? Chicken Soup for the Soup Lover's Soul? Chicken Soup for the Mountain Climbers Soul? Chicken Soup for the Amazon Reviewer's Soul???
Where there is a buck to be made on inspiration, the authors of the "Chicken Soup" series will sniff it out.

Touched lots of emotions.
Could not put it down.
This is the type of book I would read and reread.

If you loved "The Rules for Being Human" attributed to "Anonymous" in the bestseller Chicken Soup for the Soul, you're in luck. The author--corporate trainer Chérie Carter-Scott, Ph.D.--has stepped forward and written a follow-up book: If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules. This book, "a basic spiritual primer for what it means to be a human," discusses each of the 10 rules (e.g., "There are no mistakes, only lessons," and "Lessons are repeated until learned,") and discusses them with kindness, eloquence, and wisdom. For example, rule 1 is, "You will receive a body. You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration of your life on Earth." Carter-Scott discusses the challenge of making peace with the body we've been given, and the lessons of acceptance (appreciating it as it is), self-esteem (viewing yourself as worthy, despite how your body looks or performs), respect (treating it like a "valuable and irreplaceable object"), and pleasure (indulging in the five senses to "unlock the joy stored within you"). Similarly, each of the rules has four "lessons." You'll read this inspirational book more than once, and mark quotes to tell friends. --Joan Price
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Before Cherie Carter-Scott discovered her true calling as a writer of inspirational books, she worked as a teacher. As she reads, her experience and talents as an instructor are evident. She carefully outlines her rules and lessons, frequently slowing her cadence to verbally highlight key points for her "students." Fortunately, Carter-Scott's reading is more like listening to an insightful and sometimes humorous storyteller than sitting in a classroom waiting for the bell to ring. You're likely to find yourself nodding in recognition of shared human foibles, and Carter-Scott speaks with such contagious enthusiasm that even the most resistant among us will be persuaded to do a bit of self-examination. (Running time: three hours, two cassettes) --Elizabeth Laskey

5. Learning does not end.
6. "There" is no better than "here."

9. All the answers lie inside of you.
10. You will forget all of this at birth.
If life is a game, what are the rules?
We all know the feeling: In the game of life, why am I the only one who doesn't know how to play? But now, help is at hand, because this wonderful little book will teach you the rules so that you can conquer life's challenges and manage its unpredictable ups and downs.
For one of her workshops several years ago, Chérie Carter-Scott, a corporate trainer and consultant, composed a list of basic truths about life, which she named "The Ten Rules for Being Human." Right away, the Rules resonated with her clients, who photocopied and passed the list to friends and relatives. Within months, Chérie's Rules were in thousands of homes all over the country, and eventually, they were published in
Chicken Soup for the Soul and have also appeared in Ann Landers' column. Although there's no formula to help you win the game of life, Chérie's Rules convey a universal wisdom that, once understood and embraced, can contribute to meaningful relationships with ourselves and others, at work and in the home.
In
If Life Is a Game, These Are the Rules, Chérie shares that there are no mistakes in life, only lessons that are repeated. In thoughtful, inspirational essays illustrated with encouraging personal anecdotes, she includes the lessons that can be learned from each of the Rules and offers insights on self-esteem, respect, acceptance, forgiveness, ethics, compassion, humility, gratitude, and courage. Best of all, Chérie shows that wisdom lies inside each one of us and that by putting the Ten Rules for Being Human into action we can create a more fulfilling life.
Chicken Soup for the Soul, they instantly became a favorite section of that wildly successful book.
Now Carter-Scott, an internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, brings the rules to life by applying them to anecdotes drawn from her own encounters, as well as stories from her family, close friends, and workshop participants. Presented in a personal format, these steps to becoming a satisfied and well-adjusted person are sure to garner an even wider following. -->

Wow. This lady does present some interesting ideas. A different way of looking at life but makes good sense to me.
A gentle book to increase your awareness.......2006-02-21
This book was presented to me when I was already on my deliberate conscious path. If I would have read this book when I first begun my journey perhaps it would have resulted in having even more clarity to work with. But either way, the book is a must read for those who desire to move forward int their lives.

If There Is a Healthy Self-Help Book, This Is The One.......2005-09-09
Many of the concepts she puts forth in the book are time-tested and clearly communicated. Her agenda appears to be to help readers find what is true for themselves by using the 'rules' and their explanations, rather than to dictate black and white do's and don'ts. Her examples demonstrate the underlying challenges to living a successful life and she offers healthy choices for behavior and attitude. She writes from compassion rather than ego, from a desire to reach out, rather than to preach.
Thoughtful book filled with wisdom.......2004-08-17
I first listened to this on audio tape and was so impressed by the principles put forth that I purchased the hardcover copy to read. I found this to be one of those books that helps us put things in perspective while providing tangible ways to improve our lives. The best thing I can ever say about a book is that I keep it in my personal library and go back to it over and over. I do that with both the audio and hard copy versions of this work. Thank you Cherie Carter-Scott!
The rules come alive in this thought-provoking book.......2003-10-19
In the bestseller CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL, there was a
passage entitled "The Rules for Being Human" . . . it was originally
attributed to "Anonymous," but the author (Cherie Carter-Scott)
eventually came forward and wrote a follow-up book: IF LIFE IS
A GAME, THESE ARE THE RULES.
In this latter effort, Carter-Scott makes the rules come alive by
relating them to stories drawn from her own encounters, along
with examples from her family, close friends and workshop
participants . . . you almost feel as if she is talking with you
personally.
I found this short book to be most thought-provoking and
one that I will want to revisit--often.
There were several memorable passages . . . however, methinks
that you'll most enjoy just thinking about the various rules
that follow:
Rule One:
You will receive a body.
You may love it or hate it, but it will be yours for the duration
of your life on Earth.
Rule Two:
You will be presented with lessons.
You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called "life."
Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to
learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but
you have designed them as part of your curriculum.
Rule Three:
There are no mistakes, only lessons.
Growth is a process of experimentation, a series of trials, errors,
and occasional victories. The failed experiments are as much a
part of the process as the experiments that work.
Rule Four:
A lesson is repeated until learned.
Lessons will repeated to you in various forms until you have
learned them. When you have learned them, you can then go on
to the next lesson.
Rule Five:
Learning does not end.
There is no part of life that does not contain lessons. If you are
alive, there are lessons to be learned.
Rule Six:
"There" is no better than "here."
When your "there" has become a "here," you will simply obtain
a "there" that will look better to you than your present "here."
Rule Seven:
Others are only mirrors of you.
You cannot love or hate something about another person unless
it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.
Rule Eight:
What you make of your life is up to you.
You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with
them is up to you.
Rule Nine:
Your answers lie inside of you.
All you need to do is look, listen, and trust.
Rule Ten:
You will forget all of this at birth.
You can remember it if you want by unraveling the double helix
of inner knowing.
In addition, I liked the inspirational quotes that were utilized
to help drive home some of the author's many points . . . among them:
No one can make you feel inferior without your
consent.--Eleanor Roosevelt
Life doesn't require that we be the best-only that we try
our best.--H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to
succeed is always to try just one more time.--Thomas Edison
I had previously read Carter-Scott's excellent IF SUCCESS IS A GAME,
THESE ARE THE RULES . . . you can now count me as a fan
of her work, so that means I'll be looking forward to her next
effort--and will now go back and find some of her previous works.

This book, the latest in the hugely popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series, contains stories, poems, and cartoons relating to the specific troubles that traumatize teenagers everywhere. There are plenty of stories about dating ("HE KISSED MY TEETH!"), friendships (don't gossip), and school. But Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul doesn't shy away from the big issues either, with essays on suicide, dying young, and drunk driving. This book stems from the knowledge that teens know their own concerns bestthus, much of the book is written by teens themselves, which gives the book a very accessible, informal tone. Also, the authors had each piece evaluated by as many teenagers as possible. The care shows. Teenage Soul is always respectful, and doesn't minimize any of the dramas of adolescence. It does, however, mete out plenty of perspective. This wise, tender, funny book is filled with wisdom useful to teens (and everybody else, too).
Book Description
This first batch of Chicken Soup for Teens consists of 101 stories every teenager can relate to and learn from -- without feeling criticized or judged. This edition contains important lessons on the nature of friendship and love, the importance of belief in the future, and the value of respect for oneself and others, and much more.

A very helpful book.......2006-11-18
The purpose of this book is very helpful for teenagers. They tell stories that are very common in the teenager life and could help to solve a problem. They also tell stories that happened when they were children and affect them when they grew up. I enjoyed reading this book because it is very funy, lovely, sad, mysterious and very informative. I rate this book with five stars because it helped me and it can also help other teenagers.
The life of a teen, on paper..........2006-10-23
This wonderful heart felt book is an inspiration to those who are about to, those who are in, or those who have been through the rough "teen years". This book is full of amazing stories from teens, or adults (writing about their past) about the great times, and not so good times of their life. By reading this, you may relate to things people write, and be able to possibly learn from others' mistakes, before you make them. "Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul" has various stories on many different subjects, and will be hard to put down. It offers friendship, sorrow, comfort, humor, and help (etc.). This has truly been one of my favorite things to read, as well as the other "Chicken Soup" books.
This book was so moving........2006-06-12
I read it as a teenager- and it moved me.
I felt like there were so many others with similar experiences.
I felt more compassionate toward others.
And learned how many experiences that are not so good- can be looked at as a good learning experience.
I loved it so much I thought every teenager should own a copy.

Soul Food: A beautiful way to make the bible relevant today.......2007-03-25
This is beautiful and wonderfully edited to make the ancient stories relevant and applicable to modern times. Whether you are Jewish or Christian, atheist or agnostic, devout or secular .... whether you even believe or not ... this bible has wisdom for you just as it did centuries ago. Timeless wisdom never fails!
Chicken Soup Bible.......2007-03-09
If you've ever wanted to explore the Bible in easy to understand terms and with relation to our every day lives, this is the book!
A Wonderful Introduction to The Bible.......2004-06-05
This is the perfect Bible for a new-believer or a non-believer who wants to learn about Judaism and Christianity. The book begins with "How To Read The Bible" and a topical overview. Each book begins with a unique introduction. Bible stories that are culturally or historically complex are provided contemporary retellings nearby the text. Recipes for Living help the reader understand and apply Biblical truths. Reading plans are printed in a different color so the reader can read 365 highlights in the order they appear in the Bible. There are also several 30-day reading plans in the back of the Bible for many interesting subjects. Inset throughout the text are quotes from a wide range of ancient and modern sources. There's so much more - unlike any Bible I've ever seen. I hope Pinon will release a softcover edition at a reduced price. I'd like to begin giving these Bibles away in large quantities!
This is GREAT!.......2004-04-23
This is a fantastic Bible! I love the New Living Translation because it's easy to understand. The Chicken Soup stories in this Bible really do help me understand the Bible stories. This is something I'm getting for my mom for Mother's Day. It's a Bible I'd give to people who don't normally read the Bible.
joyful experience.......2004-04-05
The translations in this version is a wonderful way to assist in understanding many of the stories and passages in the Bible. The addition of stories and quotes which relate to various passages give some wonderful insight and a touch of present day. The Chicken Soup folks have done a wonderful job of putting this together. The credits for the translation team include a long list of Theology scholars. The stories and quotes are not overdone either - as there are not too many to take away from the importance of the Bible. I have only read through segments of the 1500 pages (which by the way are thin and silky feeling - another nice touch!), but I love it so far. It's a beautiful book - but maybe not for everyone.

Beautiful.......2007-09-10
You won't find a lot of technical mumbo jumbo here, but what you will find is a beautifully written book of inspirational stories to soothe the cancer-ridden soul. I tend to shy away from anything that has "chicken soup" on the cover, but this was given by a colleague and I've treasured it. Great gift to newly-diagnosed loved ones and friends.
Uplifting .......2007-04-29
Cancer patients can find inspiration from short stories filled with hope and courage, written by survivors. Great for family members too.
Good for those who haven't had cancer too..........2002-12-27
If you have ever had a difficult time in your life, this is a good book for you. I read this book when I was having a very depressing time, a time where I was not sure I was going to make it out. This book, though, was a gateway for me. Since I don't have cancer, this book didn't inspire me in that way, but it did inspire me. I saw people that had a harder life then I did, and I realized that I would get through, that life would improve for me, and it has. :o)
Chicken soup for the Surviving Soul.......2000-05-16

The "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series gives you bits of humanity and makes you feel hopeful, trusting and accepting. The stories, poems and essays are put together to give to us encouragement. I myself am a 5 year survivor of stage 2 breast cancer and find the pages filled with new beginnings.
