Bridging the Gap: College Reading (8th Edition) .......2006-11-05
It is great. It is really helping me in my classes. I am glad I got it.
A good book for getting to college level.......2005-10-18
We use this text for the supplemental/academic skills courses we offer at my community college, for those people whose reading skills are rusty for a number of reasons, including having been out of school for a number of years (sometimes as long as four or five decades), not having paid attention in class in high school, or other low-level literacy related reasons.
This book is well organised for a semester-long course that will bring out many of the critical skills necessary for doing college level work. Regardless of the discipline one goes into in college, one will have to do reading - this is as true in the nursing school, the electronics/drafting programmes, the business skills areas as well as those going on to full-fledge four-year and onward college degrees.
The book begins by exploring issues in active learning and vocabulary, some of the key concepts necessary for comprehending easily what one is reading. From there, particular kinds of reading skills are emphasised - looking for the main idea, recognising patterns of organisation and flow, seeing different points of view in the text, and beginning practice with critical thinking and engagement skills.
Within each section, there are readings and essays designed to strengthen the points being emphasised. These come from a wide variety of sources and cover a lot of different topics, so that they are not all about any particular thing, but rather each student will most likely find something of interest along the way. Each section ends with a vocabulary booster piece, and the final chapter is a very useful guide of test-taking techniques and study tips.
I find the articles very interesting, and the questions developed for the various articles enhance my understanding (this despite the fact that I have, by comparison to the target audience for this text, a very advanced degree of reading capability). This is a popular book among the students who come into our tutoring centre; they have questions and need help with the various concepts, but most like the variety of selections. One particular favourite is the essay entitled 'Monkey Love', by James V. McConnell, that gives a brief history of the Harlow experiments with young monkeys and surrogate mother figures. Essays on terrorism, women in history, low-carb pizza, media influences, Malcolm X (and his story about learning to read), and other pieces relevant to our current culture make reading less of a chore and more of a pleasure, which is key to getting students to progress through the material. The pages are colourful and interesting to look at from a graphic/visual standpoint, which also aids in the learning process.
The title 'Bridging the Gap' is very appropriate, given the task is to bridge the gap between high school (however long ago that was for many students) and college-level reading they will shortly encounter after taking this class.
Pretty good.......2004-10-01
This book offers a good basis for learning skills necessary for successful reading, especially academic reading. The end of chapter readings offer a good cross selection of topics.
Bridging the Gap/ Brenda Smith.......2003-10-06
This book needs to be worded differently. I think it is a waste of money having to take this class for an entire semester.

Book Description
Miscommunication
Employee conflict
Work ethic debates
Loyalty issues
Varying wants and needs
If you are a manager, human resources professional, or business owner, you are faced with these types of issues every day. But why?
Because currently, there are five generations in the workplace: Radio Babies (born during 1930-1945); Baby Boomers (1946-1964); Generation X (1965-1976); Generation Y (1977-1991); even some Millennials (1991 and later). Each of them has a different perspective, based on their upbringing and daily lives. The key to making encounters between the generations successful is learning to understand the point of view of each generation and respect their differences.
The individuals and organizations that do this will be the ones to succeed. This book will show you how.
Authors Gravett and Throckmorton take a dynamic approach to the situation by writing in two distinct voicesas a Baby Boomer and a Gen-Xerusing a "point-counterpoint" approach to identify differences and similarities across generations.
They share hands-on experiences, real-life cases, recommended solutions, and ground-breaking research on how members of any generation can better relate to minimize conflict, miscommunication, and wasted energy. You will learn what each generation thinks of the others and how each wishes the others viewed it.
Bridging the Generation Gap is filled with strategies and solutions you can implement immediately to help build your own bridge between the generations.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Nothing new, nothing interesting...!.......2007-03-05
Too many non-remarkable examples and most of them adapted and a little forced to what he's trying to explain.
I don't like when the author uses himself in many examples. Should be more humble.
With all your respect Mr. Mckain but I got bored reading your book. Nothing interesting, too simple.
Get Inside the Heads of Your Customers.......2005-09-02
Scott McKain can help your business increase customer loyalty and profitability. In his first book, All Business Is Show Business, he showed us how to "WOW" customers by creating compelling customer experiences.
In his newest book, What the Customer Really Wants, he shows us how to create true value for our products and services by seeing things through the eyes of our customers so we can give them what they need and want, not just what we want to offer them. This is targeted marketing at its finest.
Additionally, Scott McKain's books are a very enjoyable read!
It just keeps getting better.......2005-08-31
Scott McKain showed us how All Business is Show Business in his previous book. Now, after much research and months of work with a variety of organizations nationwide, he brings us insight into What Customers Really Want. This is the core of what drives purchases. When you learn what is wanted, selling is almost automatic! Follow this easy to read guide to find the abundant sales that are waiting for you.
Organization and Layout Serves 3 Key Purposes.......2005-08-30
Our training company has presented 2-day programs on customer service for 25 years--so I'm very familiar with most of the books out there on this subject. McKain's book stands out for three key reasons: 1) The slant or focus of the book is fresh--it focuses on customer experience, not customer service (read that "customer processing." 2) It has a helpful, extensive Executive Summary at the end of each chapter. Not your typical 2-paragraph ending, but a 3-page summary with the guts of the chapters netted out for a quick skim. 3) The "Bridge Building" section at the end of each chapter contains a long list of actionable items--perfect for developing training modules and saying to your customer service or call center manager: "Go thou and do likewise." In short, it's an engaging, impressive book.

My customers will be better off because we have read your book on what clients crave.
There are Three reasons to read your book...
It has a new perspective.
Customers satisfaction is the key to revenue increase.
You offer really usable suggestions.
Book Description
“It is by far the best thing I have seen on how to effectively use the standards.”
From the Foreword by Harold Pratt, Former President
National Science Teachers Association (2001-2002)
"Without question, this book will be of great value to the profession of science teaching. Given today’s educational landscape of standards and high-stakes testing, curriculum topic study is an essential piece of the puzzle."
Cary Sneider, Vice President for Educator Programs
Museum of Science, Boston
Discover the "missing link" between science standards, teacher practice, and improved student achievement!
Becoming an accomplished science teacher not only requires a thorough understanding of science content, but also a familiarity with science standards and research on student learning. However, a comprehensive strategy for translating standards and research into instructional, practice has been lacking since the advent of standards-based education reform.
Science Curriculum Topic Study provides a systematic professional development strategy that links science standards and research to curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Developed by author Page Keeley of the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance, the NSF-funded Curriculum Topic Study (CTS), process can help educators align curriculum, instruction, and assessment with the specific, research-based ideas and skills required in local, state, and national standards.
The CTS process will help teachers:
- Improve their understanding of science content
- Clarify a hierarchy of content and skills in a learning goal from state or local standards
- Define formative and summative assessment goals and strategies
- Learn to recognize and address learning difficulties
- Increase opportunities for students of all backgrounds to achieve science literacy
- Design or utilize instructional materials effectively
Containing 147 separate curriculum topic study guides arranged in eleven categories that represent the major domains of science, this book provides the tools to both positively impact student learning and develop the knowledge and skills that distinguish expert science teachers from novices.
Book Description
Learn how to think before you animate. Thinking Animation is a one-of-a-kind book that emphasizes how artists can use traditional animation techniques and principles with the computer generated animation technology of today. Written by seasoned animators with experience in both 2D and CG, Thinking Animation is an exquisite guide aimed at experienced animators; however, the skills taught within are still accessible and valuable to the novice animator. This full-color book includes numerous interviews with experienced contributing authors from a wide range of backgrounds, including stop-motion, visual effects, traditional animation, and CG. Thinking Animation is non-software specific. It contains a history of the field of animation as well as insight into how CG studios operate. It embraces the future of animating with the computer while still retaining the core values that traditional animators use as formulas and principles.
Customer Reviews:
Really well written and interesting book........2007-05-12
This book is just fantastic, it was such a pleasure to read that I really hoped it would not end.
I found it different from other books on the subject as it gives you an overview about most processes in animation and helped me solidify some concepts that I was not sure about. It's not a technical book so don't expect step by step tutorials, which I think it's great as it wasn't intended to be. It's a book you can just enjoy on the couch with out trying to follow and press buttons.
I recommend this book to really any one who wants to have an inside look at the animation world, any one who really wants to get to grip with the terms and concepts of animation.
Best chapter was the one on acting as it really supplied some stellar advice and ideas.
Excellent!!!!.......2007-03-11
An incredible source of insight and information even for a novice like me. The layout and flow makes this an easy read, interesting, and useful.
The insight is just what I was looking for. Thanks to the authors and editors. A great book!
Great resource.......2007-01-24
"Thinking Animation" is a good overview and learning resource for anyone that wants to know how the magic of animation is made. It covers all the basic principles of animation, breaks them down and explains how they're used. It's not a step by step instruction manual of animation, though. If you're an animation student, no matter what the medium: hand drawn animation, flash animation, 3D animation, stop motion animation, etc, this book is an excellent 'text book' that covers just about everything.
Modern Day Reference Bible for 2D and 3D Artists.......2006-09-07
I thought it was going to be Richard Williams's style book but it wasn't and in fact im kind of pleased. To me it's more like a book full of wise wisdom and tricks of the trade and really explains things in a clear cut way. If only I had this book when I first started out in the whole learning 3D thing 6 years ago this would have been my bible for deciphering most of the terms and understand what they really mean.
I really like the book has point of views from different people and how they approach their work. A really insightful book and helpful for people who have a 2D background and going to a 3D one, as there are so many terms in 3D that you don't find in 2D e.g. a graph editor and tweaking f curves. For those with a 3D background already I think book will help achieve more from their 3D animation.
This book would have really helped me a lot when I was do my dissertation called as it covers nearly every aspect I was talking about and would have saved me time, it was even helpful to see where Angie and Jamie had referenced there information from too.
All in all I think for some people as soon as they see too much text it might put them off as after all animators/creative are visual people. But on the other hand if your passionate enough and want to learn from the best or knowledge that's been past down from animator to animator its a worthy buy and for me its been a worthy buy - a book fully loaded with knowledge and wisdom, what more could you want, its like having the best animator sitting right next to you.
A must read for the modern animator.......2006-07-05
Being a professional animator, I was anxious to read this book. I finally got hold of a copy and was really impressed. The stage is set with a well researched history of the dynamically changing world of animation. Then the title theme comes into play in a very authoritative explanation of the art and craft of CG animation, with its roots in the traditional methods. What I liked was that the techniques discussed are not limited to any particular software package. A smart decision by the authors, as this book is not likely to ever go out of date. Adding spice throughout the book are anecdotes by various pros in the business, which are often quite humorous. THINKING ANIMATION is a must read for both practicing and armchair animators.

Customer Reviews:
Informative and interesting, but lacking as a reference.......2005-08-28
I found this to be an enjoyable and informative read, but at the same time, I believe it is lacking a critical piece which renders it nearly useless as a reference.
Each chapter focuses on a particular cultural "dimension" -- for example, relative vs. absolute truth; attitude about time (monochronic vs. polychronic); and preference for written vs. spoken agreements. It's well-written, engaging, and the anecdotes really bring the concepts home.
However, I could see readers approaching this material from two directions: you either want to learn about "cultural differences" in a general sense, OR you need to quickly look up the interesting features of a particular region or culture. I consider the second to be the more important (and probably most common real-world) use, but unfortunately this book is not optimized for that at all.
Many cultures are not referenced consistently, are only mentioned in one or two chapters, and are otherwise overlooked. The index is no help either -- you've got to either take your own notes as you read, or go back through the whole book to find what you're looking for. The last chapter does provide a helpful summary of the dimensions covered in the book, but it does not address this problem.
I feel this oversight is important enough to dock 2 stars for an otherwise recommended book.
