Great buy!.......2007-05-19
I bought this book for my husband and he loves it. He is constantly drawing little pictures for me. It will certainly bring out the inner artist in you. This book is easy to follow along with.
Very good.......2007-04-27
A casual glance through this book originally made me think it looked too cutesy and not what I wanted. I'll still say that too many of his characters and examples are cutesy, and rather stilted. But there's a lot of excellent material here. I found several tips that I (so far) haven't seen in several other books. I've had several nagging questions: Exactly how do I get things done? How is a finished cartoon created? On what size and kind of paper, using what tools? Blitz walks you through all of that stuff. The section on drawing backgrounds and perspective was also really handy.
I'd say this is the single best book I've seen to get started on cartooning. Even if you want to draw some other, very different style (like, some kind of dark Batman comic or something), if you have little or no cartooning experience, this book will be helpful.
A Great Book.......2007-04-16
I don't consider my self to possess any artistic abilities when it comes to drawing. I wanted to enter a contest on YouTube where I had to draw pictures of things. I got this book. Followed the easy to use instructions, drew my pictures, entered the contest and won the $5,000 grand prize. I would definitely say I got my money's worth from this book and much much more. Highly recommended.
Looks fun!.......2006-12-27
Bought this for my daughter (9) because her art teacher only wants to teach them abstract art and not let them get into any kind of drawing or painting. Well bump her! I'll teach my daughter some fun stuff at home, and I will have fun doing it with her! It's got a lot of detail on how to make cartoons and the book is quite large. Gives a lot of instruction on how to prep for doing this kind of artwork. I think the book is challenging but not intimidating for kids.
Lots of reference material.......2006-11-10
Mr. Blitz has drawn and written 320 pages of cartooning material. He covers the basics and adds a lot more too. Very useful for study, practice and reference. Highly recommended.

Will hold kid's attention!!.......2005-04-08
This is a great Haggadah for children. Even though it is designed for children it is a complete Haggadah with translation (no transliteration). The pictures are colorful and plentiful. My pre-reading daughter loves to follow along with the seder because she knows where we are and the pictures tell her what is happening. They give her something to look at while the adults are droning on in Hebrew. I got this for her several weeks before Pessach and we took it out about 3 or 4 times to talk about various parts of the seder. I let her choose what to discuss by letting her ask questions about the pictures. There are questions on every page that expound on the seder rituals or Haggadah or Passover story. I also recommend this work for adults.

Wonderful.......2006-03-15
My children all love it. Ages 10, 9, 7 and 5. Very entertaining as a family activity.
You can become a cartoonist instantly!.......2005-02-20
I am a teacher who really likes to draw cartoons on my board but honestly I don't know how. I used to memorise a face or two to use but now with this kit, things are much easier. There are 50 retooner boards in which you can learn about drawing faces, features, bodies, and everything you need. You can create so many drawings and even retooner cards from th accompanying book or even Blitz Big Book of Cartooning. My poor 8, 6, 3-year old kids just opened their mouths with excitement and just looked at the cartoons i created. By the way the kit is for me not them and so they have to earn their kits by being really nice kids. I am sure I can't wait to buy each one of them the tool to be great cartoonists.

Book Description
The South East London police squad is down and out: Detec-tive Sergeant Brant is in hot water for assaulting a police shrink, Chief Inspector Roberts' wife has died in a horrific car accident, and WPC Falls is still figuring out how to navigate her job as a black female investigator in the notorious unit. When a serial killer takes his show on the road, things get worse for all three. Nicknamed 'The Blitz' by the rabid London media, the killer is aiming for tabloid immortality by killing cops in different beats around the city. Blitz represents Ken Bruen at his edgy, lethal, and sharp-tongued best, and will reward fans of his Jack Taylor novels with another astonishing, smart, and brutal vision from a writer rapidly becoming one of the best of his generation.
Customer Reviews:
If you read this at Oval, Watch your back.......2007-04-06
Once again I am drawn into the gritty world of the London crime scene. In Ken Bruen's books, I am never sure who is more vicious and criminal, the serial killers or the police who are searching them out.
This book has our serial killer going after the police starting off with a traffic warden and aiming toward the protaganist himself, Ken Brant. We have all of the usual police who we got to know in previous books including Brant (of course), Falls, Roberts, the incompetent Super with his "golden boy - snitch" McDonald. Alas, we no longer have my favorite, Lisa since she killed herself in McDead.
This book may be a little rough for many readers and it might be hard to follow by people who have never been exposed to the peculiar language that is spoken in South London (some say that it is English, but I would not swear to that).
If Jack the Ripper Told Bedtime Stories..........2006-09-25
...he'd probably ask Ken Bruen to write his scripts.
Ken Bruen's "Blitz" is a rock `em, sock `em, no-holds-bar brawl of violent men and hard women on both sides of the law - an in-your-face tale told from the wrong side of London.
Remember the days when Lawrence Sanders was bringing crime fiction to the masses with NYPD's tough Captain Delaney and gripping crime drama like "The First Deadly Sin?" Well, carve up Sander's pedestrian prose with a broken-off beer bottle, run Captain Delaney through the gutters for some edge, strip out any regard for political correctness or social redeeming value, and you'll start getting a feel for Bruen's brand of raw drama on the mean streets. There's no genius in the story - a maniac decides to declare open season on London's cops, and starts indiscriminately killing them. In tracking down the murderer, this is not as much a police procedural as it is a character study in misfits and miscreants - and that's just the good guys.
This is black prose that finds beauty along its jagged edges - a searing journey through vicious deeds and twisted minds that builds to an unexpected and cynically satisfying climax. Ken Bruen is the real deal - if you're hooked on Lehane, Child, Huston, Rankin, or Gischler and haven't added Bruen to your reading list, don't wait another day.
LIKEABLE BOOZING BOBBIES.......2005-02-08
Blitz is the name of a sadistic killer who begins bumping off London bobbies. Tell the truth, I loved BLITZ. I loved the main cop characters, Detective Sergeant Brant and Chief Inspector Roberts, and hope they show up in another book. This is an alcohol-saturated book: it seems all the characters are up till 3 am boozing and look like hell the next day at work. What fun! Wouldn't we all like to be like that, throwing our health to the wind, devil-may-care like. No, probably not. But it is somehow liberating to live vicariously through such tough, hard-as-nails characters. In our overly PC age, when smoking a cigarette is a fineable offense in many places, it does the soul good to see people being free to make mistakes even if only between the covers of a novel. Living badly should be a choice, not a crime, in a free society. Brant and Roberts live badly and are tough, funny and likeable. Ken Bruen has written a series of novels with Jack Taylor as the protagonist which I haven't yet read but have received good reviews. BLITZ is my first Ken Bruen book. Tell you what, mate, it won't be my last.
First-Rate Irish Noir.......2005-01-01
Call it "Irish Noir," "Post-Modern Noir, " or whatever other adjective or descriptive phrase you can come up with; it matters not one bit. There's noir ... and then there's Ken Bruen. Blitz is the sequel to Bruen's The White Trilogy, a series of novels that introduced us to the cops in the South East London squad. A more dysfunctional collection of police officers would be hard to imagine. This time around, their loyalties, their training and what's left of their fragile sanity will be put to the test as they attempt to collar a sociopath who is out there killing cops with a hammer. (Leading Bruen, of course, to insert an irreverent reference or two to the Beatles' immortal "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." Would you expect any less?). The killer, nicknamed "the Blitz" by London's rabid tabloid press, is a total `nutter. As the novel progresses, the reader is left with the sneaking suspicion that this whack-job is probably going to get away with his crimes and maybe even make a few pounds selling his story to the highest bidder. The fact that you are tempted in that direction, however, is dead giveaway that the author has something else entirely up his sleeve.
What Blitz lacks - relatively speaking, that is, compared to some of Bruen's other novels - in terms of sheer primal energy and visceral impact, it more than makes up for by means of a subtle and not-so-subtle sense of humor that is as grim and as dark as it gets. It's not that Bruen has become domesticated. It's just that his technique has become more sophisticated over time. Indeed, the author's implicit indictment of society is all the more searing because it is couched largely in such outlandishly humorous terms in this novel. You'll laugh your arse off in places while reading this book. Five minutes later you'll realize that what tickled your fancy was definitely no laughing matter a' tall. And five will getcha ten that's what the author bloody well intended in the first place! So strap yourself in and grab a motion-sickness bag. You're in for a wild ride through the sights and sounds of a London that will never, ever make the pages of any guidebook.

one sitting trip to Londonýs wild side.......2004-06-30
The police psychiatrist asks South East Detective Sergeant Brant to talk about his tendency towards violence when the patient lights up a cigarette in the non-smoking office and head butts the shrink. As the Super lectures Chief Inspector Roberts over his failure to reign in Brant's abusiveness, the latter learns his wife died in a car accident. Super has his favorite poster boy handsome PC McDonald take home the distraught Roberts. Officer WPC "Black is Beautiful" Falls fails a key exam while goof McDonald, who almost cost her life, remains the Super's pet. Still the fair haired McDonald runs into trouble; Brant sets him up to look like a stooge and he had an accident in which he killed a bloke
While Roberts replaces his wife with alcohol as his companion, Falls turns to drugs and a skinhead for solace, and Brant is on the brink of suspension, The BLITZ murders police officer Sandra Miller. Other cops are killed and soon the South East London Police Squad knows they must stop a vicious serial killer. However, with Roberts deep into mourning and Brant in deep trouble, Porter Nash leads the investigative task force which only angers his superiors, Roberts and Brant.
Living up to its title, BLITZ, fans will feel just that way with this one sitting trip on London's wild side. Readers get a close up look at several cops struggling with personal problems when the serial killer, seeking publicity, begins a reign of terror that grips London and the audience. The ending is a delightful twist that will leave police procedural lovers seeking more urban noirs from Ken Bruen (see THE GUARDS and KILLING OF THE TINKERS).

Learn from History.......2007-09-01
This book should be required reading both in High School, college and in general. It shows the courage the people of London had and how strong the human sprit has to be under diverse conditions.
Book Description
Churchill called it his nation’s greatest trial and its finest hour. Europe had fallen to Hitler and Britain stood alone. Determined to bomb the English into submission, the German Luftwaffe attacked London nearly every night, targeting the “Square Mile,” the heart of the city and the site of some of its greatest landmarks. In this gripping historical narrative, Margaret Gaskin puts the reader into the middle of the Blitz, its horror and its heroism, by vividly reconstructing the night that Hitler tried to burn the city to the ground—the night that one of the war’s most haunting photographs was taken, showing St. Paul’s still standing amid burning ruins. Stunningly vivid and compelling, Blitz uses the voices of those on whom the bombshells fell—the ordinary and the famous, including Edward R. Murrow and FDR—to tell the story as it has never before been told.

One Night During World War II.......2007-02-10
The German air attacks on England fall into about four main segments: Early, The Battle of Britain, The Blitz, and Later. Early was the almost casual air raids made by Germany. The Battle of Britain is usually considered to be from 9 July to 31 October 1940 and was the period when the Germans attempted to wipe out the RAF. The Blitz is the attack on British cities and is between 7 September 1940 and 16 May 1941. After that the later attacks were sporatic until the V-1 and V-2 weapons came into use.
This book is a detailed look at one day during the Blitz, December 29, 1940. This day saw the most devastating raid of the Blitz which caused what has been called The Second Great Fire of London. A famous photograph shows St Paul's Cathedral enshrouded in smoke, this photograph is used on the front cover of the book.
All in all, some 1,500 fires were started by the German incindary bombs, somewhere around 3,000 (no one knows for sure) civilians were killed. While these numbers are minor when compared to what came later in the war, the picture of St. Pauls, and the on the scene reporting by Edward R. Murrow was instrumental in convincing the Americans to enter the war.
This is not a historical report on the Blitz. It is a detailed report on what happened one night as told through the voices of people who were there.
To the cut-out bin.......2006-11-26
I read a lot of books and this one did not all at all catch my interest. In the 1970's when an album did not sell it was consigned to the cut-out bin, to be sold for $1.99, etc. Such should be the book-equivalent fate for this book. My time reading it was not well-spent, and I regret that I did not use that time reading something worthwhile. Especially do not buy it if you are a WWII buff and have an interest in the December 29, 1940 air raid- you will be very disappointed.

Book Description
There exists great hope throughout the scientific community for the application of nanotechnologies to solve myriad technological and societal problems. Nanomaterials and nanoparticles exhibit unique properties which are now being explored for potential uses, as well as hazards. In September 2005 a NATO Advanced Research Workshop convened in Kiev to discuss the current state of the art in surface chemistry and nanomaterials research, with a view towards biomedical and environmental applications. This volume represents the fine work presented at this workshop, consisting of a unique mixture of reviews as well as primary research articles from leading laboratories in Eastern and Western Europe as well as the US.
A common theme throughout much of this volume involves adsorption and interfacial behavior of nanomaterials including core-shell particles, nanoparticles derived from oxides, mixed oxides, carbon, carbon/oxide hybrids, functionalized nanoparticles, polymeric biomaterials, and more. The behavior and design of these nanomaterials for adsorption (or sometimes the lack thereof) of toxins, pollutants, narcotics, warfare agents and various biomolecules are studied with a mix of experimental and theoretical approaches. This volume holds a special niche in describing the current state of the art in the fundamentals and applications of a variety of nanomaterials.
Book Description
With the words “This is London,” Edward R. Murrow’s groundbreaking radio broadcasts from 1939 to 1941 brought the blitz into America’s living rooms. Countering the tide of U.S. isolationism, Murrow told his huge audience that the United States could not avoid a confrontation with Hitler and that the bombs it heard falling during his reports would eventually be targeted at American cities. But although often cited as the paragon of journalistic objectivity, Murrow had a clear agenda—to bring America into the war—and he slanted his broadcasts accordingly. And behind the scenes, he helped the British court U.S. public opinion and secure American funds for a British intelligence operation.
Broadcasts from the Blitz examines Murrow’s work and life during this crucial time. It also profiles unsung heroes of those days, such as U.S. ambassador John Winant and Winston Churchill’s confidant Brendan Bracken, and villains as well—such defeatists as Joseph Kennedy and Charles Lindbergh, who believed England was doomed. Other compelling characters include Eric Sevareid, Mollie Painter-Downs, and Nancy Astor, whose “Cliveden set” was accused of being too cozy with the Germans. They and many others mixed in a London that remained vibrant even as it was being battered. Broadcasts from the Blitz is a story of courage—of a journalist broadcasting live from London rooftops as bombs fell around him—and of intrigue, as the machinery of two governments pulled America and Britain together in a common cause. Finally there is the drama of December 7, 1941, when Murrow was the sole journalist to meet with Roosevelt. Broadcasts from the Blitz is for all those interested in the influential career of an extraordinary man and in the relationship between journalism and politics.

The Story of a Unique Man in a Unique Time.......2006-08-06
The difference between reporting the news and leading the country has never been clear, and Edward R. Murrow was a master at both.
While reading this book on his broadcasting from London during the early days of the war, don't forget his broadcast that ended the career of Joseph McCarthy. Murrow understood that his reporting influenced American public opinion.
There are those who rail against his sense of ethics in combining reporting the news with what you might call propaganda. Perahps he should be judged instead by the result. He helped prepare the US for a war that we could probably not avoid.
This is the story of a strange time, and what one key player did.
For any who would understand early broadcast journalism's effect on war and peace.......2006-07-22
BROADCASTS FROM THE BLITZ: HOW EDWARD R MURROW HELPED LEAD AMERICA INTO WAR is for any who would understand early broadcast journalism's effect on war and peace. Murrow's 'This is London' opening brought the blitz home to Americans who would've otherwise been distanced by war events: he told why Americans wouldn't be able to avoid involvement, and he prepared the country with his moment-by-moment broadcasts of events. His agenda was to bring America into the war - and more than any politician, he alone helped prepare the American public for such involvement. This far-reaching story will interest a wide audience, from students of broadcast journalism to those interested in military history and social issues alike. Highly recommended indeed.
