Book Description
Fans that wager on college basketball can become consistent winners and still gain the full entertainment value of both watching the games and wagering. By applying a little extra effort to handicap games and place wagers intelligently, the losses of the average fan can be turned into significant winnings. If you are a fan are ready to spend some time handicapping - maybe 20 minutes - you can win consistently. By using a systematic handicapping and wagering process that makes the best use of your time, you can gain an advantage. Examples of the most powerful techniques for gaining a consistent wagering advantage are: · Specializing in point-spread wagers rather than totals, futures, interactive, and exotic propositions. · Projecting a team's play based on past performance against teams comparable to the next opponent, not all teams. · Analyzing a team's performance trend by focusing on the last 10 games. · Systematically varying the amounts wagered to reflect your perceived advantage - the difference between the outcome that you forecast for the game and the point spread. · Doing business with sports books with offer you a tangible advantage in terms of how early they accept wagers as well as the propositions they handle and transaction fees (vigorish) they charge. · For each desired wager, "shop" among sports books for the most favorable terms - both the point spread and the moneyline.

Easily Worth the Cover Price.......2007-05-28
Due to the fact that great sports betting books are a diamond in the rough, i would have to say this stacks up as one of the bettor books I've read because it gives practical information that can be used to garner an edge in handicapping.
The money management section is not a central part of the book although it is conceptually the weakest element. I am not aware of Seidel's own betting experiences but 60% is really only attainable possibly in college hoops (over a small sample) but I wouldn't personally expect to hit at that rate (target of 55% is much more realistic). Hence the advice about putting down 10 unit wagers is probably not wise.
Excellent NCAAB handicapping treatise.......2006-03-08
This text gives you a streamlined process for handicapping college basketball spreads. There are virtually no other legitimate authors on this topic, as most professional bettors do not give away their methods. Seidel's methodologies for handicapping are legitimate, which makes him a rare diamond in the trough. If you master this book's material and understand money management, you will make money betting on NCAAB.
While his understanding of college basketball is extraordinary, his understanding of the sports betting industry is poor. Likewise, his ideas on money management are also deficient. Although this is not the focus of the book, his lack of understanding in these areas are why this book received only 4 stars.
Seidel wrote another book "Investing in College Basketball". Of the two, this was far superior. It was shorter and better organized, making it easier to quickly adopt his methodologies.

The Baseball Information Derby.......2007-01-11
Simply, the best annual publication about major league baseball. Hardball Times would be #2. Somewhere in the dust is the rest of the field.
Best overall baseball book ou there.......2006-07-30
Love Baseball prospectus 2006. Great info and stats. I personally like the humor the authors do in there player Analysis. Makes it fun to read, not just a dry paragraph about numbers. Best part about the book is it is for real baseball fans and roto geeks. Both will enjoy the book.
Sophmoric nonsense.......2006-07-08
This is a horrible example of sophmoric "witty" commentary paired with the idiocy of stat-based evaluation. If irrelevant asides were not enough, they are mostly wrong as regards players from the team I follow closely, the Oakland A's. Take the notes on Houston Street ("never will be in the Lidge/Rivera class"), Zito ("overrated"), minor leaguer Travis Buck (stupid comments on his name, totally inappropriate), Ander Ethier (overmatached in the big leagues). Where their prognastications are reasonable, a simple extrapolation from previous years (anyone could do it in their head) would suffice, not some pseudo sophisticated computer program. I hate this book.
Calling all fantasy team owners............2006-07-03
This is the one book you need before draft day! Oh, and if you're just a major league baseball fan, especially one that knows that there is a lot more to find in the statistics than meets the eye, this book is for you. If your eyes glaze over when you try to decipher statistics, this book makes it easy to understand all you really need to know....oh, and love the snark!
The Book which tells you why your instincts for Baseball are true.......2006-06-02
This is a page turner. The stats that are introduced tend to support the hueristic beliefs that a true baseball fan already has. As a Phillies fan and a former fantasy league member who drafted teams based on what is now known as a Sabermetrics, I was pleased to see how my former beliefs (I had some good teams in the 80s and 90s before I quit) could be validated by recent research.
Folks,
I love this book.

Step up to the plate and face the next generation of sudoku!
Mastered sudoku but want to take it to the next level? ESPN Baseball Sudoku puts a new spin on the wildly addictive puzzle phenomenon. In sports sudoku, 9 x 9 puzzle grids are solved using traditional sudoku techniques, but here the nine numbers are replaced by the starting positions in a baseball lineup: P, C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, CF, RF.
The 200 sports sudoku puzzles are arranged by difficulty level -- Little League (Easy), Minor League (Medium), Major League (Hard), and Hall of Fame (Expert) -- and require no math skills or baseball knowledge, only logic. (The book also contains some bonus All-Star puzzles -- sudoku grids composed of nine letters arranged in anagrams, which, when solved correctly, will reveal the name of a famous athlete.) With an easy-to-follow introduction explaining how these new puzzles work, this is sudoku as you've never played it before.

ESPN Baseball Sudoku.......2007-03-04
I love baseball! I love sudoku! This book is so much fun, best of all possible worlds!
great gift idea.......2006-08-03
I bought this book for my 8 year old nephew. I thought this book was a good way to get him more interested in baseball as well as do some logical thinking. He enjoys it! I don't know if there is much of a difference in the puzzles versus other Sudoku books, but the little change to the baseball positions is a fun little twist.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
This text does not tell you a whole lot if you know what you are doing already. However, if you are not familiar with the basics of probability, or how bookmakers have an edge, or what the sensible things to do are when looking for odds to be on a sporting event, then this book is not too bad a thing to have read. When punting, something that gives you one useful fact can of course be worth a lot of money.
easy to read, pretty good introducing materials.......2007-05-14
wong is no doubt one of the most well known authority on this kind of stuff. if you just started out, it wouldn't hurt reading this
Not all that good.......2006-10-07
Take away the charts, this book is almost useless. Not impressed with it at all. For beginnners with less than 1 year of wagering experience only.
Good book for the beginniner; provides sound statistical advice.......2006-06-27
Sharp Sports Betting by Stanford Wong is a book that aims to provide sports betting advice to new and experienced bettors. Most of the topics, however, are for the beginning bettor.
In Sharp Sports Betting, Wong does a good job of explaining the basics of betting to the reader. Next Wong moves on to explain handicapping to the reader. Wong discusses aspects of handicapping such as injuries and motivational factors, but he refers the reader to a website to use for mathematical predictions. Something more than providing the user with a website might have been better here.
Sharp Sports Betting isn't without its gems. The chapters on testing win-loss records for significance and using a Poisson distribution to model the probabilities of exotic propositions provide the reader with solid advice.
The chapter on testing win-loss records for significance helps the reader understand why a "trend" against the spread or OVER/UNDER is likely to happen due to chance alone. Most of these "trends" are not significant and will happen due to chance alone.
The chapter detailing how to calculate the probability of an event that is modeled using a Poisson distribution can provide the reader with a unique way of handicapping exotic bets for events such as the Super Bowl.
Overall Sharp Sports Betting is a book the sports handicapper should have on his bookshelf. Those readers new to handicapping/betting sports are the best fit for Sharp Sports Betting.
The bible of sports gambling.......2005-10-09
Stanford Wong wrote the single best volume for the beginner to intermediate sports bettor (with an emphasis on football). The book teaches the basics of sportsbetting, terminology, understanding odds, and methods to make bets that should win in the long-term. This is an excellent primer on someone who is serious about making money from sports.
The material is slightly dated - internet betting has made the sports markets more efficient. Notwithstanding this, most of the material is still useful (notable exceptions are trends of super bowl teams, and some underdog analysis).
There is a recurring emphasis on mathematics, which any solid gambling book should have. Additionally, the book has several charts that are invaluable to sports bettors. It has frequences of pushes for NFL against different spreads, as well as different totals (these have not changed significantly since the book was published). Additionally, it has odds charts for Poisson distributions for 1 and 2 variables. While an advanced gambler could generate all these charts themselves, this book still saves the newer gamblers many hours - and the book is worth it for these alone.
If you are serious about gambling to win (which means you are willing to put in long hours, and are very disciplined), there are a few other books you might consider: any of Stanford Wong's Blackjack Books; Larry Seidel's "Investing in College Basketball" and Don Pesynski's "Win more-- lose less!".
Book Description
The Winner's Guide in Fantasy Baseball is the most comprehensive guide on the market to one of America's favorite hobbies. Where are the best websites to find fantasy baseball information? Which pre-season publications are worth your dollar? What should you look for in evaluating major and minor-league players? How do you value players for your league and adjust for draft inflation? How should you react when your league's draft isn't going your way? The Winner's Guide to Fantasy Baseball not only tackles these issues, but walks you through the "how's" and "why's" of each so that owners learn to think for themselves. If winning a league title is your ultimate goal, this book will help get you there.

Best Guide to Fantasy Baseball.......2006-02-11
With this book you will no longer depend on the "experts" to guide your draft or auction strategy. This book does not give you values but rather teaches you how to calculate your own values. Mr. Lee gives you step by step instructions on how to "price" your players based on your league salary cap and statistical categories. The best part is that you don't have to be a mathematical wizard or computer genius to do it.
This book also contains solid advice on trading strategies as well as other magazine and web site publications related to fantasy baseball.
I would recommend this book for both veteran and rookie fantasy baseball players. This book will definitely improve your game.

Kudos To A Well-known Professional.......1999-12-31
If you're looking for "get-rich-quick" systems on sports betting, then look elsewhere (and you'll be looking for a *long* time, too!). But, for the average income gambler like myself, you'll make good use of the author's betting theories, money management and discipline guidelines. Filled with dozens of examples, John Patrick's book on one of the most popular forms of gambling explains how to manage your money and turn a profit simultaneously at this exciting game of chance. Read it, digest it and follow it. You'll be glad you did.
Worst sports betting book I've ever read!.......1999-03-27
Apparently, Amazon.com has some sort of private agreement with the publisher, as the first review that I wrote has been censored. This "book" is without merit. Two thirds of the content is filler - useless anecdotes that won't lead to putting any money in your pocket. The money management "system" proposed by the author is statistically unsound. If you want a solid sports betting primer, pass on this title and buy "The Complete Book of Sports Betting" by Jack Moore. For more in-depth info, obtain any work written by Bob McCune other than the "Gambling Times" book.
If you bet on sports, buy this book.......1998-08-06
This is the first of John Patrick's books I have read. From other comments, you either love or hate his writing style. I think he is hilarious while also very informative. All I have to say about this book is, betting with the money management ideas he presents, I ended up positive where I have so many times previously ended up negative on the same number of wins. If you bet on sports, buy this book!
Practical, profitable and down right funny........1998-07-13
John Patrick's Sports Betting book is by far one of the best books of it's kind. John explains the ins and outs of the sports wagering world, educating the reader and at the same time making you laugh at yourself. The best thing about John's book is that it gives you practical and realistic expectations about sports wagering instead of greed based hype. If you're serious about cutting gambling losses and incresing profits, get this book!
