2 out of 5 stars I might use a total of two tricks..........2006-08-10

I hate leaving bad reviews of things because I know someone is trying to make money and I don't want to hinder that.

Truth is that the concept of this book was exactly what I was looking for, but it didn't have anything special in it. I might use a total of two tricks. Most of the things just come off as stupid or little clever games (i.e. with matches)... but very little magic or tricks.

2 out of 5 stars Should be called "How to look stupid".......2002-10-21

Do the stunts in this book and you're going to look thicker than a pound cake. The tricks don't ease awkward moments as it claims, instead it makes you feel more awkward than you did to begin with.

I told my friends I'd levitate an olive for them and they all gathered around the bar. After 5 mins of trying to get the trick to work, it's still obvious to those watching that the olive isn't floating at all. Suddenly you become the butt of all jokes and your friends start calling you names like "spaz".

I gave it two stars because there is one trick that is actually really good and is almost worth the price of the book. It's the one where you make a spectators finger ring link onto the stem of a borrowed bar wine glass.

2 out of 5 stars Preview a copy before buying.......2001-09-18

There is a point where simplicity converts to banality, and this book treads that line a little too closely for my tastes. Those new to bar culture may find something to wonder over here, but anyone interested in magic probably won't.

Having said that, I disagree, slightly, with others who've gone so far as to say that the book--and especially its cover--are misleading. The cover describes the tricks as "idiot-proof", and they are. The tricks are well-illustrated and competently explained. As the cover claims, you will learn how to pass a dollar bill though a lemon, and make a coin walk across the table. To be sure, there's nothing in the book that will teach you how to create the image of a levitating olive as depicted on the cover, but the cover is basically honest.

If it oversells the book at all, it does so when it claims the tricks will "amaze" friends. It's best to say, as the back cover points out, that the tricks will help smooth over awkward conversational moments. Because of the lack of anything truly breathtaking, or even much that's subtle, this book is best previewed at a local library before purchase. IIt's probably not a smart impulse buy.

3 out of 5 stars Crowd pleasing, but nothing to wet yourself over.......2001-08-13

Haven't put this book to too much use as of yet, but i can tell ou that i find it a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, they're cool tricks and will probably come in very helpful, but the tricks lack the mystifying appeal i was hoping for. FOr the most part, they're all cool tricks, but once you preform them for friends, you're giving away how it's done. I was anting soemthing that would leave my friends a little more mystified. I guess the tricks just lack the magical side i was looking for. Still impressive tricks, but they won't leave people in aww, unless they're really hammered i guess. I'd suggest combinign this book with The Complete Book of Beer CDrinking Games jsut for kicks. hope this was helpful for you. peace

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be..........2001-08-10

I purchased this book hoping to learn a few cool magic tricks I might be able to pull of in a bar. I was immediately interested by the cover of the book, which pictures an olive levitating over a martini glass. From this picture, and from the the words "Levitate an olive..." which also appear on the cover, I assumed there might be a trick inside to make an olive appear to levitate. There is, however, nothing of the sort. The olive trick turns out to be a pretty stupid bar bet that has nothing to do with even the appearance of levitation. And it only gets worse from there. Most of the tricks in this book are, as the cover does advertise, incredibly simple; the problem is most of them are so simple they are completely uninteresting. Personally I am glad I never met the author in a bar while he was researching material for this thing.

My feeling after reading this is that it is a collection of trite gags that will cause the people around you to groan and leave you sitting alone at the bar, buying your own drinks and cursing the day you ever tusted the other reviewers on this one.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, practical advice for the beginner.......2005-03-10

I like this book of card tricks for the fact that it is user-friendly and practical-minded.

After a brief introduction, Longe guides the reader through a series of card-manipulating exercises that have applications in hundreds of card tricks. He then lays out a series of card tricks, rated for their difficulty level, and complete with advice on what kind of audience might be best suited for any particular trick. The illustrations are simple and clear, and the tricks range from the basic to the extremely clever and inventive.

There's nothing new under this sun, but a beginner will find this guide much better than average when seeking to learn the basic skills necessary to amaze their friends and strangers.

2 out of 5 stars The title is BS!.......2002-05-03

I have been doing card tricks for a while, and I have to say that anything of Bob Longe's is a waste of money.

The tricks in this book are terrible. These are certainly NOT the "World's Best Card Tricks". I can't believe some of this [stuff] is even in here.

I highly recommend the reader to learn card magic from great authors such as Jean Hugard, S.W. Erdnase, and Arthur H. Buckley.

If you are a beginner, get the "Royal Road to Card Magic" By Hugard and Braue. It is of MUCH higher value and the tricks in this book will be 100x better than the stuff that's in Bob Longe's books. There is absolutely no way you can be the life of the party with these tricks, as the author claims.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for the beginning Magician!.......2001-12-03

I'm a magician member of the Magic Castle now, but in my early forays into card magic this book helped wean me away from trick Svengali and stripper decks, so that I could be handed a deck of cards from anyone and perform a nice trick. They're not all home runs. But I still get great responses from several of the tricks contained within here.
...and yes, I now own Card College, have read Royal Road to Card Magic several times, but those books should come after this one. This one will help you decide if you're serious about persuing more card magic or not.
A fabulous starter book, but make sure you practice!!

3 out of 5 stars For those who are REALLY starting into card magic........1999-11-23

If you never read "Royal Road To Card Magic", "Expert Card Technique" or "Expert At The Card Table", you'll find this book a good one. It has some good tricks, but it has some dumb ones too. I recommend this book for those who does not want to learn some sleight of hand before starting doing card tricks. As Amazon warns, this book is juvenile literature. Last word: if you buy this book and you like it, then buy "101 Amazing Card Tricks". It's written by Bob Longe too, and in my opinion, they should be sold together, for their similarity.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST book I could find on card tricks........1999-09-16

No doubt that this is the greatest book on card magic. No sleight of hand is required and all you require is a deck of 52 cards, preferably the Bicycle brand Bridge sized cards which are easy to handle. Therefore the tricks are easy to learn.

I am not a professional magician, no way close to being even an amateur and yet I could amaze and dazzle my family members and friends. I am just a beginner to this world and now I am genuinely interested in magic in general and card magic in particular. Thanks, Bob for this great book. I am sure I will check out his other books as well.

1 out of 5 stars Weak book on solitaire.......2002-06-09

I collect books on solitaire. I would not recommend this
to anyone but a collector -- there are much better books
in print, such as Morehead and Mott-Smith's "The Complete
Book of Solitaire and Patience Games" or Parlett's
"Teach Yourself Card Games for One". Barry claims to
have selected the best games in her book, but it is still
littered with junk like Auld Lang Syne (a virtually
unwinnable game with no skill). The descriptions are
often incomplete and occasionally wrong (her description
of Pyramid, allowing cards to be used a second time after
being discarded, is nonsensical). She describes Storehouse
as a minor variant of Canfield; it's actually a forerunner
where cards are packed in suit. She rates games by
amount of space used (an interesting feature) and level
(it's not clear if this is supposed to be win rate, in
which case many of the ratings are wrong, or something
else). Myron Miller's illustrations are nice, but the
book has little else to recommend it, either in selection
of games, or clarity and accuracy.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Collection of One Person Games.......2000-05-11

This book makes no attempt to be comprehensive in its listing of solitaire games, but the games it does describe are described in large print, with diagrams, and examples for the games that are not so obvious. This was useful to me as some of the more comprehensive books (and web-sites) keep the directions minimal. Certainly a good buy at this price.

UPDATE: This book is now published under the title GREAT SOLITAIRE GAMES.

4 out of 5 stars Sweeping Overview.......2006-03-13

This book gives a great overview of the entire world of Warhammer - covering all the races, their motivations and backgrounds, history (including a timeline) and culture. The art was a bit bright and fancy, but I came away aghast with the depth of this world.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD READ!! A MUST BUY FOR WARHAMMER FANS!!!.......2003-03-14

this book is a great read for anybody that is starting in warhammer, if you are a veteran player, though, you might want to subscribe to white dwarf instead. the book is informative about almost any army, the magic, the units and the history of warhammer and the grudges that the races have with each other.

a must buy for warhammer fans!

5 out of 5 stars nice.........2003-02-26

fantastic book from the man who worked as deputy editor for GW's citidel journal... and may I add, put so much bloody sweat and beer into it that it actually got out on time for the few month's he was there... (nice one)

...anyhow, the book, ignore the front cover (not my fav piece of artwork) but you should never judge a book by it's cover.. a fantastic read, very imformitive and enlightening and great for both new player and old veterans. :)

a definate buy for all GW or warhammer fans!

2 out of 5 stars Most overated book ever.......2001-11-01

I was so dissapointed after reading this book. I read every single part word for word and did not learn anything. At the same time, I could not put it down. I guess thats the story of my life. And what was that stuff about chickens all about.

3 out of 5 stars A Colorful Guide to Warhammer.......2001-05-01

The book is a colorful summary of the Warhammer hobby setting. This may be interesting to new players of the game systems. All the materials, however, have appeared in one form or another in the game rulebooks or magazines so it doesn't really offer anything new to experienced players.

3 out of 5 stars Good bathroom book.......2006-01-31

Not alot in the plot. Just good ol' short stories on playing texas-hold'em. And players profile. Not a 1 sitting read not a novel.

4 out of 5 stars A Feel Good Poker Book.......2005-11-30

Each entry made me smile, made me feel good inside. This could very well have been titled Chicken Soup for the Poker Soul. The big bluffs, the great calls, the monster laydowns; even bad beats made the list (read the book to find out why). Not the best book for poker tutorial, but a great book for leisure reading as it reveals the human side of the poker pros.

Dear fellow magicians. This is a good book for the beginner and some for the ametaur. The best trick in the book would be the production box. He gives instructions, but no dimensions or measurments. He could have done a better job on the trick selection and maybe done some more advanced tricks(just incase your advanced). But he did do a good job. If your a begginner looking for a good book to learn patter or some fairly good tricks, than this is the book for you.

These games are old, simple, and easy. Many can be played by both children and adults. I like them and use them at family get togethers.

4 out of 5 stars What a Value!.......2000-03-14

I have all the Party Game Books and believe it or not,Ifound this one to be the best!... There are games for kids as well asadults and lots that can be adapted to both. In the back of the book there is a list of all the games along with an age grid which has stars that tell you what age the game would be appropriate for. There is nothing too outrageous and nothing off color but, again, the games are pretty adaptable! There are games that would be great at a backyard carnival and instructions for some of the classics. Its just a generally nice game book to have for reference if you are into games. My 7 year old had a blast at a New Years Eve party that I gave for him and 5 other 7 year olds. Most of my ideas came from this book. END

5 out of 5 stars best games by a british title challenger.......2002-11-12

nigel short was a chess prodigy who swept through the ranks of experienced grandmasters including anatoly karpov and jan timman to take on garry kasparov in the 1993 world championship. against kasparov , short was outclassed but he held his own with all the rest and played some wonderful tactical games for example against yasser seirawan. this book is very useful indeed for players who like to play 1e4 and start attacking right from the word go!
