1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money and time.......2007-08-02

I really have to wonder about the people that are recommending this book. At 143 pages, the author wasted 3/4s of the book on "interesting" facts and the rest of it on what the title claims to provide, "techniques to improve memory..."
Very dissapointing. You are better off buying some good books on relaxation and breathing techniques and some word-puzzles.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainingly Informative.......2007-06-27

The author is knowledgeable and entertaining! He is a totally likable guy with a lot of well supported statistics on how our brains work. He guides simply and gives common sense commentary on our concern for memory maintenance.

Good book for everyone interested in keeping their brain in order!

2 out of 5 stars Not enough depth.......2007-06-18

There are some interesting facts in this book, but overall I found it to be somewhat superficial. It covers a little on how memory works, a little on techniques for remembering facts (relax, pay attention, and make a list), and quite a bit on herbs and medicines. I imagine it would probably be most useful for a student needing help with study techniques, but it wasn't very helpful to me -- looking for some techniques to fight absent-mindedness.

1 out of 5 stars Forgettable!.......2007-06-09

this books is thin, both in content and in pages. Ill sum it up for you. You remember better if you pay attention, and you recall better if you relax. With no particularly insightful tips, or techniques save your money, this one is forgettable.

5 out of 5 stars To the point!.......2007-05-17

Good, basic and believable. Simple exercices and common sense approaches to improvement are the reasons to buy this book. It takes the approach to memory akin to a succesful diet plan - behavior modification that is sustainable and realistic. You will not develop super human powers reading this book but you will gain valuable tools to lessen the frequency of lost keys and lost memories.

2 out of 5 stars In search of the real info.......2007-08-30

While there may be a lot of good information here, it is inseperably mixed with a lot of personal opinion and drum-beating. Instead of just compiling reports from qualified MDs, PhDs, etc., Carper regretfully goes one level further and INTERPRETS these studies for us. Unfortunately, she is not qualified to do that. Her background is not in medicine or health, she is just a writer. She wants to sell books, so she becomes super-positive with all her "analyses". Sorry, Ms Carper, your embellished opinions are not objective, are not scientific, are often flat WRONG, are not separated from the factual information, and thereby destroy what might have been an informative book. I suggest Holford's "Optimum Nutrition for the Mind", or Stoll's "Omega 3 Connection" for those interested in more science and less hype.

5 out of 5 stars A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.......2005-08-21

Let me cut to the chase, there are numerous supplements you can take to keep your mental facilities in top working order, but if you are looking for the ONE thing you can do that will provide the best overall results - take a multivitamin daily.

Ms. Carper has provided another fine study of the current research (circa 2000) related to the human brain and the effect of various supplements or lack thereof. If there is one complaint that I have about the book, it is that it is dated, continued research in the field would argue for an updated edition of the book.

The four sections of the book cover the workings of the brain, what to eat, what supplements to take and how to prevent vascular problems from affecting your brain. True to her usual form the author presents the research for each topic, broken up by nutrient or supplement, further broken down by details of the impact on the brain of a shortage and the research data to support claims that the nutrient or supplement may correct the problems, and how much to take for full effect.

The discussions are intriguing in that the author's conclusions require so little action on the reader's part to correct or prevent the stated neurological problems (topics range from depression to aggression to forgetfulness to age related problems like Alzheimer's).

One of the reasons I bought this book was because I was heading back to grad school (in my 40s), and I wasn't quite sure I was up to it. Having completed 13 semester credits in biological and chemical sciences over two 6 week summer sessions with a flawless 4.0 grade average, I can say that I feel at the top of my mental game and ready for admission to grad school. My current set of supplements include: a multivitamin with minerals, coenzyme Q10, Omega 3 fish oil, ginko biloba and grape seed extract.

Getting back to my initial statement, unless you have a perfect diet (be honest), you need a multivitamin with minerals to ensure that you are providing the basic nutrition for a healthy brain, once you are there you can look into the other supplements for further improvement. P-)

5 out of 5 stars Review of "The Miracle Brain"........2005-08-02

This is an excellent book. It is a "must have" item for anyone wanting to improve the functioning of their brain. I purchased one copy of his book for myself and another copy for my best friend. I feel certain that I made a vey wise choice in purchasing "The Miracle Brain"

5 out of 5 stars Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper.......2004-01-10

A main thesis of this work is that food can impact the brain
either favorably or unfavorably. The author explains that
men have brains that tend to shrink faster than women.
In addition, high blood pressure tends to reduce brain size.
Stress also damages the brain. There are juices which have a
positive impact on brain chemistry; namely, grapefruit,
tomato, orange and blueberries. Cranberry, spinach, kale,
strawberries and plums have maximum ORAC units. Raisins and
prunes are top anti-oxidants. Spinach, beet greens, tomato,
orange juice, cantaloupe, squash, sweet potato and avocado help
to minimize strokes. B vitamins and Vit C help to keep the
brain young and preserve cerebrospinal fluid. Selenium
boosts the brain and a deficiency can upset brain function.
The stone age diet is best for people. It consists of 65%
veggies, fruits, nuts and honey with 35% lean meat, eggs and
fish. DHA is found in seafood and EPA is found in a fish diet.
Linoleic acid is found in leafy green veggies and olive oil.
Brain fat busters are saturated animal fat, whole milk, butter
and cheese. This book will be a good addition to any personal
health library

5 out of 5 stars Superb guide to your brain, health, nutrition, lifestyle.......2003-12-19

This book is a treasure chest of extremely valuable information on how to preserve your mental capabilities and to protect yourself from disease with the right diet and the right supplements and amounts of them. Did you know that people taking vitamin C or E supplements are shown in general NOT to develop Alzheimer's? Did you know that blueberries, strawberries and spinach are brain-savers? Did you know that you can control and possibly prevent insulin resistence by eating a low "glycemic index" diet. Did you know that eating foods equalling 5500 ORACs a day will protect your memory and motor control? (A cup of black tea brewed for five minutes contains 1200 ORACs.) Did you know that vigorous walking for an hour, five days a week will lower your risk of stroke by about half (p. 331), as will fruits and veggies and tea (p. 323)?
Jean Carper discusses the importance of Omega-3 oils in fish for pregnant women who want to optimize their children's mental capacities, as well as for the rest of us. She discusses the B vitamins, folic acid and the other, and their vital importance.
She gets down to specifics with doses to take and appropriate combinations.
I heartily recommend this book. If you buy only one book this year, buy this one.
The writing is energetic and enjoyable. The glycemic index and ORAC tables contain invaluable compilations for charting an optimal daily diet. I posted copies on my refrigerator door!
I've given this book to several people, all of whom cherish it.

1 out of 5 stars Just to balance.......2002-04-23

I give one star to this book because I want to lower the five stars rating it had, a rating which pushed me to buy this book, to then be deceived.

When I read a book, I usually, after a few pages, start to have a glimpse of what the author is made of, and what he was thinking as he wrote that. I say usually, because good books, non-fiction that is, are not tainted by the author's personna, the subject is exposed in a clear, concise and timeless way.

On the 300 pages or so this book has, a quarter of it is filled with critics and age old revelations like just how bad TV can be for your brain activity, and the poor state of the public school system, another quarter is filled by reference to the original authors who first brought those opinions to the public arena, another quarter is filled by "what this book is not" and "what this book could be" and the rest is filled by quotations and practical ways to impliment his techniques, techniques that he can't express clearly, other than "problem solving", a technique that can be found more clearly and concisely written in other books and filled with necessary exercises for you to grasp and impliment that technique, "How to solve it" by Polya is the best example. You get a few exercises at the end, typical brain teasers taken from other books, and a bibliography of the books he has used to build his system, but he warns you, "don't take these books as the last word on the subject", I think this phrase alone resume the overall shadow that floats over this book as you read it, here's more hints of why I found that book a desolation: He complains a few times about the low quantity of books on the subject of "thinking" he repeatedly wonders that it's maybe because there is no specific vocabulary attached to this "discipline" and he proceeds, you might have guessed, to create one, so that his book might one day become the reference of this "discipline" and be quoted by others in future generations, just like he quoted some from past generations.

This guy is sick, don't buy this book, unless you're looking for a friend to hold your hand.

5 out of 5 stars Profoundly affected my life.......2001-11-03

I bought and read this book shortly after it was originally released nearly twenty years ago. After reading it, I referred to it as "My Bible". Yes, I was much younger, yet to this day, I feel it had greater impact on me than any other book I have read. And, the bibliography lead me to several more books that lead to an improvement in my thinking and my life. There are two reasons why I came to ... today and looked up this book. First, I was hoping that there might be a new edition of the book. Sadly, it doesn't appear so. Secondly, I am going to give this to my 21 year old niece as she begins her career and adult life.

5 out of 5 stars Gives you meat. Enjoy the feast !.......2001-08-06

Reviewing this masterpiece is a challenge. The breadth of coverage, the depth of content and the time-tested durability of the ideas never cease to amaze me (I am still not able to find fault with or criticize any of the ideas presented in the book).

One reason why this book has not got the popularity it deserves might be the rather mudane and unimaginative title "Brain Power". When I first saw the unattractive cover and commomplace title, I almost ignored this as another pot-boiler promising impossible feats with the mind. It is my good fortune I bought it (and read it !).

Quoting from page 14, the six fuctional thinking skill categories covered by Albecht are:

1. Fact finding 2. Crap detecting 3. Thinking on your feet 4. Idea production 5. Problem solving and decision making 6. Happying.

This list encompasses almost everything you would wish to do well in the mental plane (at least in the everyday life of a well informed person, let us exclude scientists etc.). Facts form your knowledge, crap detecting helps you filter out the pseudo-facts, thinking on your feet helps you use your knowledge in day to day living, idea production equals creativity, problem solving and decision making is the utility that works on your knowledge in the most efficient manner to make choices with respect to objectives and finally happying spans the cerebral with the emotional. For a few dollars, that is quite a lot!

Other books cover similar ground (But I don't think they cover ALL of this). Albrecht's achievement is to bring together in one place the results of reserach and strong common sense thinking on each topic. Although the ideas may not be entirely original (thinking skills is an area where everyone might have said something correct), I found many of them for the first time here and didn't find them in so many other similar books I have read. Instead of just being a collector of ideas, Albrecht polishes the ideas and adds fertiliser with quotations, anecdotes, cross-references, puzzles and exercises, that eventually the dry core of the result of an academic study or a familiar common-sense approach becomes a powerful, high-horsepower thought vehicle which you can marshal the next time you have a problem. Also, you learn to recognise situations in terms of the categories discussed. This is invaluable in helping you apply the ideas on a regular basis.

Albrecht also takes the distinguishing approach that intelligence and emotions are NOT meant to be two water-tight compartments. All along he emphazises how good thinking skills can lead to a better quality life, better relationships with others, higher self-esteem and more happiness. In fact, he only discusses ideas that will be of use in the real world of a common man.

The book has a brief but very relevant bibliography and Recommended Reading List. I love the quotations before the start of each sub-topic (for example, "Wisdom is knowing what to do next", "Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as you please"). You will want to read many of the recommended books.

So, if you want to get a grip on this thing called thinking, if you want to figure out what your mind is doing most of the time, and then do those things better, then this book is a great starting point.

Book Description

In this groundbreaking new book, a Harvard-trained neurologist shows how you can attain lifelong mental fitness. Utilizing the latest breakthroughs in research, Dr. Jeff Victoroff has developed a definitive, life-changing plan that provides you with the powerful, scientifically based methods you need to protect your brain from aging and memory loss. Starting today, you too can save your brain.

If you are over forty years old, you already know the bad news: names may be harder to remember; a word may sometimes elude you as you speak; you may sometimes misplace your glasses, your car keys (or even your car!). But medical research is lifting the veil of mystery off the process of brain aging and offering up strong evidence that you do not necessarily have to accept deteriorating brain function as you get older. From the benefits of exercise to the effects of stress relief, from what you eat and drink to the kind of work you do, from the natural substances that are most likely to help to the new medications your doctor can prescribe, this book outlines literally hundreds of preventive measures you can take to keep your mind sharper, stronger, and healthier your whole life. Among the many topics covered in this book are:

• Amazing new studies revealing who is most likely to get Alzheimer’s disease--and how we can all reduce our risk
• Powerful evidence showing how the Brain-Saving Diet can boost your defenses against memory loss
• How stress, depression, anger, and low self-esteem can literally threaten the structure of our brains, and what we should all be doing about it
• The surprising discovery that inflammation is slowly cooking our brain cells, and how we can stop it
• The two ways you can literally add new brain cells!

A book that will change the way you live, eat, and work, Saving Your Brain is a wake-up call to those people who have long since learned the wonders of taking care of their body--and now have the very real chance to provide the same lifesaving care for their brain.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2005-06-04

Keeping the brain working at maximum performance is something we wish we could make a reality. Saving your Brain, gives the understanding of the brain coming directly from a credible source. A doctor focused in the study of neurology, who gives numerous citations of scientific studies supporting his claims. I've read many books concerning the brain and this book tops them all, I reccomend this to any one interested in the topic and although it is somewaht of a long read, it kept me enthralled enough to spend an entire evening reading it straight through. Excellent book!!!

4 out of 5 stars Keeping your mind in shape.......2003-12-27

The pace of neuro-scientific discovery is rapidly increasing, bringing good news. Among other subjects, this book deals with memory loss and provides 10 practical steps to counteract it. It also provides physical activities to boost brainpower.

Part I discusses the brain, memory and diseases like Alzheimer's. Part II provides the various remedies. These include stress management and the use of substances like Growth Hormone, Melatonin and DHEA. The avoidance of Aluminium is discussed here.

The section titled Food For Thought includes the Brain Saving Diet and discusses vitamin B12, Folate, Iron, Calcium, Phytochemicals, Essential Fatty Acids, Anti-Oxidants, Smart Drugs (Nootropics) and the benefits of chocolate and tea, which are very real.

There are selected references arranged by chapter, an index and black and white illustrations of neurons and synapses. This valuable book complements other informative titles on this subject, like Khalsa's Brain Longevity and Ray Sahelian's Mind Boosters.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2002-12-14

This book is full of excellent, useful information.

Surprisingly, it is also clearly written and fun to read!

A must for anybody with a brain.

5 out of 5 stars Current and educational without a know-it-all attitude.......2002-09-05

It is very seldom that I read a book and then decide to start a second reading of it. This book is so good I felt the need to read it twice, to better absorb the information. Of course, having read the description of the maturation stages of the brain, I knew that I would need that second reading to hope to retain as much as a 16 year old would on a first reading.

Dr. Victoroff gives you current information on a vital subject. This book was published in July of 2002 and it draws upon over 14,000 studies in the last five years - some from early 2002. He even refers to the impact of the September 11, 2001 tragedy.

I especially liked his technique of presenting both point and counterpoint studies for the impact of most of the herbs, hormones, diseases, exercises and general lifestyle factors he describes. He makes it clear when a statement is based on solid facts, when it seems likely based on some but not all studies, and when he is speculating - giving his personal opinion. This type of honesty is sometimes lacking from the medical profession. One of my favorite sections contains a quote from the head of a medical school who tells the incoming students that half of what they are about to learn is false; but that unfortunately, we don't know which half.

I came away from this book with a much clearer understanding of how my brain works, what can happen to keep it from working optimally, and what I can do to help protect it.

Since the research on herbs and drugs is changing so rapidly, much of this book will be out-of-date within a couple of years. It's my hope that Dr. Victoroff will write frequent revisions to keep us informed about these changes.

In 2002, this book is a must-read for anybody with a brain, who wishes to keep it functioning.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-07-25

I was disappointed with the book, perhaps because I may not be the target audience. I am in my mid 30's, and have realized that my memory is not as sharp as it used to be. Hence my interest in this book - I picked it up hoping for some non-obvious tips on how to slow down deterioration of my brain. Perhaps there was relevant information in this book: if so, it was very difficult to find.

Dr. Victoroff appears to have followed the same strategy that many school and college students follow when writing a paper for which they lack material: state obvious facts, repeat information, present information that is only vaguely relevant, all to ensure that the required "length" requirements are met. This book is far too long. There is too much of information on the physiology of the brain. Many of Dr Victoroff's recommendations appear to be self obvious (eat right, exercise, avoid stress).

Had the book been about a third of its size, it might have been interesting. As it is, it is extremely dry.

In the end, I ended up skimming thru the book to get to the "juicy" part that could actually help me: unfortunately, I found nothing.
