Excellent choice!.......2007-09-20
Excellent little Sodoku book! Easy to carry with you in the car, etc and has some good challenges! My daughter loves it!
Very Good........2007-09-08
It's a good book to work on your lap. I bought two books by accident, but I'm sure I will work both. The paper is good and so are the puzzles.
Fun book.......2007-08-23
This is the 3rd Will Shortz book we have purchased. This book has better quality paper than the others.
Pretty good little book.......2007-08-22
Mostly, I love the spiral binding and hardcover, because I can haul it around on my breaks at work. No more trying to write on my knee without poking my pencil through the paper. But I've done about 1/4th of the puzzles and the back cover has slipped out of the binding twice. So far it's slipped back in pretty easily but it's got me slightly worried.
Great fun.......2007-06-27
This book is everything I thought it would be,and more! Shortz always provides quality puzzling.
Book Description
Here it comes: a revolution in sudoku solving! This is by far the most complete guide to cracking these addictive puzzles ever produced, with tricks even the experts won’t know. While most books might have a few pages of introduction before proceeding straight to the sudokus, this one covers it all: hidden pairs, naked pairs, X-wings, jellyfish, squirmbag, bivalue and bilocation graphs, turbot fish, grid coloring, and chains. Every single one is here, and much more too, including the exclusive Gordonian logic methods (Gordonian rectangles and Gordonian polygons) that will turn even the hardest puzzles into a breeze. Of course, there are hundreds of sudoku for practice. A very special addition is a reprint of the very first sudoku ever published in 1979, from Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games magazine!
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide for Sudoku.......2007-09-04
I found several techniques that I had not run across before that have helped me solve some of those "black belt" puzzles in the paper with relative ease.
Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku.......2007-09-01
The book met my expectations. It is an excellent resource for a serious Sukoku puzzle solver. It teaches new problem solving techniques and has puzzles in each chapter that test the new knowledge learned. It also has a lot of puzzles at the end of the book that will give hours of pleasure or frustration, dependin on your point of view.
Definitely good value.
My only negative comment would be the binding is not good and I have loose pages already.
helpful, but hard to understand.......2007-08-15
Maybe because I am not a genius, this book was hard to undertrstand. It has tons of puzzles and a plethora of techniques to guide someone in solving the hard sudoku puzzles. However, I needed to buy another book that dumbed it down a little. The 2nd book I bought was Mastering Sudoku Week by Week: 52 Steps to Becoming a Sudoku Wizard by Paul Stephens. This book is wonderful. It is easy to understand and still teaches the techniques to solving the extreme sudoku puzzles. Also, for Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku: Hundreds of Puzzles Plus Techniques to Help You Crack Them All (Mensa) there are 6 puzzles to a page and that is rather cramped. The harder puzzles require notes/candidate listing, which is nearly impossible with the size of these puzzles.
Just Exactly What I Wanted.......2007-07-31
Although I had figured out most of the basic techniques listed in the book by myself, I needed a "teacher" in order to learn the more sophisticated solving techniques. This book provided exactly that, without the huge jumps between instructional steps that some books have. I like the fact that this book contains a large number of puzzles to solve which increase in difficulty, but for the hardest puzzles it would have been nice to have the name of a possible solving technique to access first in the answer section, instead of being forced to go directly to the completely solved puzzle.
I also would have preferred a round-wire or spiral binding so that the book would lie flat when open which would make the puzzles easier to work, but removing the sections of early finished puzzles while keeping the instructions intact allowed the book to flat and served my purpose anyway.
Overall, it was a great book...the best I've seen, and I've looked at lots of them.
The Sudoku "Missing Link".......2007-07-29
Most Sudoku books are a collection of puzzles of varying complexity with either no solving strategies other than the basic rules of Sudoku or with a brief, superficial look at the more elementary solving methods.
"Solving SodoKu" by Peter Gordon is the exception. It covers virtually all the techniques required the crack the more difficult "evil", "diabolical", etc. type puzzles. It starts with the fundamental methods and graduates up to the difficult strategies. Each chapter includes a number of puzzles solveable using the method in the chapter to practice the technique. The book also has about 700 more puzzles. So far this is the only book I have found that goes into the level of detail to identify the "key" to the puzzle and then solve it. After working thru the techiques I am now finding and solving many puzzles using the Gordonian Logic family of strategies. That chapter alone was worth the price of the book.
I highly recommend the book if you are serious about solving super-tough puzzles.
Unfortunately, I could not give the book a 5 star rating as the puzzle size (6 per page) is too small and the binding is poor. My book is simply falling apart after what I would consider normal use. I'm also getting tired of copying the puzzle to a larger blank grid to properly work the puzzle.

Shortz and sudoku.......2007-05-13
This is an entertaining book. Shortz is the best when it comes to puzzles of any type. I eagerly await future books.
Will Short is our favorite.......2007-04-29
Will Short is our family's favorite author on Sudoku's. This series of books from him is the best for taking in the car, etc. as it's compact yet the puzzles are big enough for writing.
i love sudoku.......2007-03-31
It is a good size book. I have bought a smaller book of sudoku, and gets too messy when you write numbers around the square.
Bought as gift for family member, they couldn't put it down........2007-02-12
Do be weary...these books immediately addict the readers. I gave this as a gift and it immediatly consumed him.
Its a good book with a quick intro for those that are unfamilar with the subject...and then scales puzzles according to your level.
This did lead to another gift quickly after for orther japanese number puzzles.
Sudoku for everyone.......2007-01-21
I love doing these puzzles so much I wish there were more than 100 in this book. I found the easy ones easy, but not ridiculously easy. I like the medium ones. I have not done the difficult yet, but I look forward to them. Even though there are only 100 puzzles in this book, it has taken me a while to work my way through it. Will Shortz is the best.

Just Right for Me.......2007-08-13
I just LOVE this type of puzzle.... but unlike many others who have been doing them for a long time... I just get bored and am not patient enough to stick with those really hard puzzles, or ones where you are counting & counting across 60 or more grids. Just not my thing. The smaller difficult puzzles are good for me, too.
This book had interesting pictures and logic combinations. The solutions involve various kinds of logic connections... not just bifercation. I am buying O'ekaki's next book.
Only for Beginners.......2007-08-04
This book was a disappointment to an experienced puzzler. Anyone who has done these kinds of puzzles for a while wil find these waaaaayyyyy to easy. I would only suggest this book if you are a newbie to this type of puzzle.
Excellent FUN!.......2007-07-24
Just open it up and start solving! It goes from easy to hard, and I had hours of fun with this book!
Beware hyped title.......2007-07-22
This book has nothing to do with Sudoku.
We bought it wondering if it was a new kind of puzzle. It is not.
It is a book of Hanjie or Paint by Numbers.
I would not be surprised if their next book of hanjie includes "Harry Potter and David Beckham" in the title.
The puzzles lean towards eazy.
An enjoyable kind of logic puzzle.......2007-06-26
This is an enjoyable kind of logic puzzles where the puzzles are consisted of a grid in various sizes of rows and columns. There is/are number(s) for each row and column that corresponds to the number of shaded blocks in that certain row or column. Once all of the shaded blocks are filled in for every row and every column, a picture is "painted" by pencil. I have enjoyed this book as I have been doing other books with this type of puzzle such as ART OF PUZZLES BY NUMBER by Kathy Weaver as there's a link to this book: Art Puzzles By Number. Any one who enjoys logic puzzles of any kind will be surely to become addicted to this kind of puzzle once he/she tries just one simple puzzle just like I have!

recommended.......2007-08-09
when i opened the packages from amazon, then i looked this book.. i was thinking when i would finish it.. hehehe cause there're 1001 puzzle of sudoku.. 1 book for 1 year.. it's a good book
Real Giant.. Good for addicts :).......2007-06-28
Really giant book with 2 puzzles in each page. My main disappointment is the low recycled paper quality and the mistakes in few of the puzzles in the 1 and 2 stars level. I expected it to be well prepared by an expert!! Overall, it's worth what you paid for.
LOTS of puzzles.......2007-06-14
There are lots of puzzles but there are also some typos in the puzzles(i.e.repeated numbers). You have to check the answers to correct the puzzles before working them. The answers are correct. I am still doing the 200 Easy puzzles and learning a lot about solving. Have had the book for several months and still not 1/3 through. But I am also not an expert solver.

Customer Reviews:
Great Sudoku Book for All Levels.......2007-06-03
*****
This is a great sudoku book for all levels, but especially good for those who wish to increase their sudoku proficiency and MASTER sudoku. There are 200 puzzles, only one to a page, printed large enough for marking up. There are places to record your time, too, and you can accrue points based on how quickly you can do a puzzle. This is nice, because although I prefer difficult puzzles now, it's fun to go back and do an easy one faster and faster. There are different techniques involved in the different levels of puzzles and timing them makes them all continue to be challenging.
If you're a beginner, you can start out with the easy puzzles and work your way up. There are medium puzzles, too, as well as difficult and super-difficult. There is plenty of technique instruction, and there are many examples, so this could serve as a first book for adults. It was not my first sudoku book, but it is still one of my favorites, and I find myself going back to it again and again.
Highly recommended.

COULD HAVE GONE FARTHER.......2007-04-11
I WAS HOPING THAT SHE WOULD HAVE GONE INTO THE SOLVING OF MORE DIFFICULT PUZZLES. HOWEVER, I THINK SHE DID A GOOD JOB IN SOLVING THE MEDIUM PUZZLE SOLUTIONS.
Good for non-experts........2007-02-22
Good basics. A good springboard, and you can go to more advanced techniques later. Her favorite epressions are "slicing and dicing." Took a while for me to figure out that all she's telling you is to look horizontally, and vertically.
GOOD INSTRUCTION AS WELL AS PUZZLES.......2007-01-12
VERY HELPFUL. SHE DOESN'T LEAVE YOU WONDERING WHAT CAN I DO, OR TRY, OR WHERE TO START. IT'S ALL THERE FOR BEGINNER OR DIFFICULT PUZZLE SOLVER. THE ONLY BOOK OF IT'S KIND OUT THERE ...I.B.E. MASS.
My favorite Sudoku book.......2006-09-01
Helpful coaching in learning Sudoku at the beginning of each level. More levels of challenge. Starts easier than others books I've found. Would help people who have tried Sudoku and gotten frustrated and quit.

Customer Reviews:
Good puzzles, nice layout.......2007-08-26
This is a good solid book. It appeared that someone had worked through the puzzles to be sure they were solvable, which is comforting when you're up against something tough. Loved the extra margins and large boxes to leave plenty of room for notes and scribbling. Sometimes the tough ones seemed easy and vice versa. Definitely requires skills in more than one strategy to beat the tougher puzzles.
Good book.
Will Shortz: My Puzzle Hero.......2007-04-03
Will Shortz has done it again. These puzzles are organized by difficulty: light and easy; moderate; demanding; beware! very challenging. 1000 Puzzles! I will still be working on these puzzles well into the next decade!
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!.......2007-02-20
I bought this book just after it was published in August 2006, to take on vacation. I'm up to #953 (Feb 2007), and sure hope I can find another giant one like this!!! (Or I have to erase all the puzzles and start over). The grid size is good, and characterization (easy/medium/etc) is good. It's definitely improved my technique, and I recommend this to anyone who loves sudoku.
Perfect for sudden sudoku urges.......2007-01-04
Will Shortz is one of my favorite sudoku editors. The puzzles are interesting, require a variety of solving styles, and are well rated for difficulty. This book's large size is just perfect for propping on one's knees in an easy chair. It stays open without effort. The size of the grids is just right. Those of us who have struggled with some really hard puzzles might find too many easy ones here, but even the easy ones are interesting, and I find myself enjoying them when I need a distraction rather than a challenge. The rich offering of so many puzzles at many levels of difficulty makes this a book to go back to again and again.
