Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Political Science Research.......2006-08-30
This book has great facts about weapons of mass destruction throughout the world's countries. Great for research.
Cold war's Past, Today's Problem.......2006-08-21
This is a comprehensive book in which the authors describe proliferation issues and nonproliferations issues. This is a great reference book to have on nuclear issues as well as biological and chemical threats.
The book is detailed to the extent that one would think that some of the material should be classified, because there is a chapter on Russian nuclear facilities which handle nuclear materials, waste mamnagement sites, Russian stategic submarine fleet sites and nuclear test sites are featured. Also China's aresnals are thorougly presented and many others. Iran N. Korea to name a few.
The authors describe many of the international network of treaties and agreements construted over the past 50 years. Also there's a chapter on nuclear, biological and chemical materials and weapon systems to deliver them.
Overall I enjoyed reading this book, it's a good refernece to have if you want to know about proliferation and non proliferation issues that affect the fragile world we live in.
Excellent Proliferation Resource.......2005-07-12
The latest in the line of Carnegie proliferation surveys, Deadly Arsenals is an essential resource for all concerned with WMD proliferation issues. Students of nonproliferation will appreciate the up-to-date analysis of the regime and its hard cases, including timely information on North Korea, Iran, and the most recent "success" story, Libya. This is one of the few books I keep on my desk--my dog-eared 2002 edition is ready to be shelved.

Book Description
This superb large-format reference book is the ultimate illustrated guide to the equipment used by the U.S. Army during World War II. No other single source provides so much accurate and authentic detail on weapons, vehicles, ammunition and other combat equipment, together with an authoritative explanation of the development and introduction processes. The facts and figures are profusely illustrated with over 700 photographs and drawings, and set in context in the Introduction by military equipment expert Ian V. Hogg. During World War II, various military agencies produced catalogues to fill in the gaps left by the official U.S. War Department manuals. This led to inconsistent technical data appearing in different sources. In order to standardise the information and properly catalogue all the equipment, the U.S. Ordnance Department began putting together the master guide now published as The American Arsenal, covering every piece of equipment in use and being produced. Every figure, date, specification and description was authenticated by reference to Ordnance Committee Minutes and similar authorities. The vast amount of technical information included makes this an invaluable reference work.
Customer Reviews:
CONCISE CATALOG OF OFFICIAL STD. WORLD WAR 2 ORDANCE.......2006-05-10
THIS IS A CATALOG OF STANDARD ORDNANCE FROM THE OFFICIAL U.S. WORLD WAR 2 ARSENAL
IN A NUTSHELL: IT DOESN'T GET AN CLEARER OR SIMPLER THAN THIS & FULLY ILLUSTRATED TOO!
If one is at all interested in military hardware, especially from an historical standpoint, this book will be impossible to put down. Basically, most everything, from fuses, to artillery shells and pieces to mines, mortars and grenades are included. Enough useful info is included for each individual ordnance for one to realize how these weapons might best have been used and to what effect. In some cases, the penetrating power of projectiles is also included, and this is especially important with tanks, which of course were also included, complete with detailed diagrams and specs.
BOTTOM LINE: EXACTLY WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE
How can you go wrong with Ian Hogg?.......2002-08-19
This is a wonderful overview of American technology "on the ground" in WWII. One thing that I felt that Mr. Hogg might have added is some consideration of production numbers and dates as an appendix.
very comprehensive!.......2001-08-02
This catelog is very comprehensive in terms of the number of weapons used by the US in WW2. Basically it is composed of copies of the original documents. Some weapons are missing, the Colt 1911 & tommy gun, but info on them is easy to find elsewhere. Excellent diagrams of ammo & mines. I would like a little more info on some of the more obscure arms, but taken as a whole this title is an excellent reference. I would like to see more titles, as comprehensive as this, concerning the other participants of ww2.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent hands-on reference for all levels of need.......2005-01-01
I have worked as a vocational counselor for many years, and I use this book on a regular basis with my clients as well as with my own family/friends. A nice feature of The Career Portfolio Workbook is that it outlines what you need to do during the process of creating a portfolio, but also recognizes that some people don't have the time to work through the process in a step-by-step fashion. For example, the book has a note in the introduction that if you need a portfiolo in a hurry - say, for an interview tomorrow - you need to read chapters X and Y. With a week to prepare, chapters W, X, Y, and Z should top your reading list. If you have more time, read the whole book.
The directions are wonderful, and allow each person a wide range of flexibility in terms of developing a unique style of presentation. The book includes templates, sample portfolios, and other documents you can modify for your own use.
Highly recommended.
A unique way to manage your Career.......2003-07-07
The Career Portfolio Workbook is a great resource which I have used to transition into a new profession. I was able to use the ideas in the workbook to market myself and to set myself apart from the competition. I have many career books but this is the best. The system is comprehensive and easy to organize. It is a unique way to manage your career.
It Works!!.......2003-03-26
This book really works! It is clearly written and is guaranteed to help you put together an excellent portfolio. Only days after using the guidelines of this book to create a PEAKS resume, I got 3 calls for job interviews. It really is amazing and I recommend it to anyone, no matter how far along you are in your career.
Valuable tools in a well written book.......2003-02-16
It is well-written, clear, and extremely USEFUL. And it is very easy to use.
The book clearly presents how to create a powerful career portfolio and market yourself effectively. Very valuable tools presented in a well-written book made this one of my best Amazon buys of the year.
A must have.......2003-01-21
I know you've heard it before, buy this book and great things will happen. This book is different. It offers easy to read, true to life examples of what it is really like when your out looking for a job or promotion. The authors base the workbook on how you can set yourself apart from your competition. I was very hesitant at first but gave the career portfolio a try. The step by step directions in the book made a seemingly daunting task quite manageable and rewarding in itself. I put together my career portfolio and have a new confidence in myself that I am sure contributed to landing my new job. I wish I had this years ago.

As a diverse collection of information--much of it at a fairly advanced level--White-Hat Security Arsenal: Tackling the Threats is a valuable primer on matters of computer and network security. The author doesn't offer specific instructions on how to harden your systems against attack, and doesn't go far in explaining how to build security into software you write. But he does offer good overviews of how particular manifestations of malice--such as Babylonia (a specific virus) and distributed denial of service (DDoS) systems (a broad class of attack)--work. Similarly, he details how security protocols and mechanisms--packet filters and the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol are two examples--go about their tasks. In brief, the book breaks little new ground, but it covers the familiar data communications security material extremely capably and with frequent reference to the most recent exploits of the bad guys.
Rubin is at his best in explaining the details of security protocols, which rarely make intuitive sense. Using the proven "conversation" method of illustration ("Alice sends her public key to Bob..."), he untangles even the remarkably obtuse Diffie-Hellman algorithm. He backs the dialogues with the formulas that underlie encryption and authentication, and usually translates the simplified conversations into the actual messages exchanged by machines.
This book is worth the cover price for its lucid explanations of how security protocols work. It also highlights places in which security technology is lacking (in making sure no unauthorized data goes out from a Web server, for example), which is refreshing. --David Wall
Topics covered: The state of the art in computer and network security, explained from the point of view of the system administrator wishing to keep bad guys out. A menagerie of recent viruses and attack profiles is followed by discussions of secure storage (with emphasis on encrypted file systems and local password authentication), data exchange via public-private key pairs and trust management system (including Kerberos, of course), network defense with firewalls and intrusion detection systems (IDS), and secure communications via the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol.
Book Description
"Avi Rubin does a great job of explaining the motivations behind many security solutions, as well as providing practical information about how you can solve real-world problems. White-Hat Security Arsenal is an invaluable resource--a judicious mix of practical information and the theory behind it." --Marcus J. Ranum, CTO, NFR Security, Inc.
"White-Hat Security Arsenal ups the ante for the good guys in the arms race against computer-based crime. Like a barrage of cruise missiles, Avi's excellent book attains air superiority by leveraging smarts and advanced GPS technology to zero in on critical targets. Intended to educate and inform information security professionals with a no-nonsense, hold-the-hype approach to security, this book is a critical weapon for modern information warriors. If you wear a white hat and are on the good guys' team, buy this book. Don't go into battle without it!" --Gary McGraw, Ph.D., CTO, Cigital
How do I allow secure remote access to my site? How do I protect data on my laptop in case it's stolen? How should I configure my firewall? Will I regret using my credit card online? How will the bad guys attack? If these are some of the questions that keep you awake at night, you need to read this book. As a computer security expert at AT&T Labs, author Avi Rubin regularly meets with IT staffs from all types of companies. When asked to recommend resource material to his customers, Rubin realized that there just wasn't a book on the market that would give them concise, direct answers to all their security questions. So he wrote one. Using a problem-oriented approach, Rubin walks you through everything from protecting against network threats to using credit cards on the Web. Each chapter begins with a problem statement, continues with a description of the threat, explains the technologies involved, and then offers solutions. Chapters conclude with one or more case studies. You'll find easy-to-understand information that will help you
* Identify the risks
* Put attacks in perspective
* Store information securely
* Perform reliable and secure backups
* Transfer information securely across hostile networks
* Understand Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and its limitations
* Protect against network threats
* Set up firewalls
* Deal with denial of service attacks
* Understand online commerce and privacy
Whether you are an IT professional, a system administrator, an academic, or simply a regular Internet user, White-Hat Security Arsenal is full of information you can't afford to miss.

The security book I've been looking for.......2002-01-22
This book explained to me how to solve the problems that I deal with all the time in my job. I like the fact that someone took the time to think about the reader and not to focus so much on all of the esoteric aspects of security that you find in most books. I already loaned my copy out to a colleague, and I'm recommending this book for everyone.
Incomplete and dated.......2002-01-19
I bought this book along with many others a while back. I am a network security consultant. I wanted to broaden my skills a bit and make sure my knowledge was up to par with others in the field.
I found this book very incomplete and dated. Most of the information was relevant about 5 years ago. Since then tatics and technologies have changed rather significantly.
For example, the book does not even mention intrusion detection systems. This is a staple technology of the security community and any hacker worth his weight would focus a great deal of energy on circumnavigating or overloading these devices.
Also, the book treats firewalls as the "end all be all" of network security. Which simply is not the case. Firewalls are important, but certainly not the only security product you implement.
Pass this book by and go for much better books such as Hackers Challenge or Know Your Enemy by the Honeynet team.
Excellent problem solving book.......2002-01-18
I have read many security books, but this one is unique. The thing that I really like about it is the way the author tackles problems (pun from the book cover - football theme) rather than just going through cryptography and network security. Some of the problems that are dealt with are exactly the ones I encounter in my job, and I found this book to be a great way to learn about them. The author is obviously a real expert, and the writing style is informal but precise. It's almost like being in the room with a good instructor. I give this book the highest recommendation, and I have already loaned my copy to colleagues.

Thanks to san_kalyan for a very honest review.
This is the worst book ever published on computers security. Even worse is to compare it with Spafford and Garfinkel's `Practical Unix and Internet Security', a true classic.
White-Hat Security Arsenal:... is a trivial and outdated book. Bad structured and totally useless even for beginners.
Don't throw your money away. Buy books like 'Hacking Exposed' if you are interested in the basics of computer security.

Book Description
In this book, J. David Truby demonstrates why gun control simply doesn't work. Features rare photos of remarkably ingenious and very deadly improvised weapons made by guerrillas, secret agents, criminals and freedom fighters, all collected from prisons, police departments and Third World countries. For information purposes only.
Customer Reviews:
review.......2007-08-24
this is a so so product lacking depth and content, you can read it though
Interesting...different than I thought it would be, but interesting..........2007-02-17
I thought this book was going to be about how to improvise every day objects and use them as weapons, but it is a book about bans on guns and how people have made guns themselves when the government will not. This book is a very good overview of why people have created their own weapons, and it helps me to appreciate the First Ammendment more and more.
If you are looking for a book on weapon-making, I would recommend the Improvised Munitons Blackbook.
very informative.......2006-11-03
good information bases book. Very useful in keeping up with what can be done if you put your mind to it. The crimial element is really on the ball in this book. Highly recomment tihs one.
Not a how-to book, but very eye-opening.......2006-02-26
This book is basically an illustrated argument against the concept of gun-banning legislature being effective in keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals. There are many photos and examples of improvised single shot weapons using the .22 catridge that hardly look like conventional weapons. What they lack in stopping power and accuracy, they make up for with relative ease of construction, accessability of materials, and concealment. Many of these examples were confiscated from inmates in prisons. Which raises the question: if criminals can make guns in federal prisons, then how can gun laws prevent them from doing so when they are free in the streets?
Later in the book, there are examples of more sophisticated weapons, like reproduced AK-47's and the like by local craftsmen in third world areas.
It's interesting (and to some, perhaps unnerving) to see a shotgun made by a 15 year old from simple pipes that is capable of firing a 12 gauge round.
What could have made it better is if it featured cutaway illisrations showing the inside of some of these devices, like where the round is places, where the firing pin is located, and the mechanism that activates it.
Overall, if you are interested in improvised weapons and/or odd devices, then its worth the money. Just be advised that it is not a how-to manual.
Intriguing.......2003-02-27
This book has a lot of anecdotes and stories, with plenty of photos and commentaries. It makes you think about how useless gun control is. Has a picture of a guy who's pen-gun backfired, talks about prisoners making gunpowder from matchheads and urine, and diagrams of some very cool devices. It's NOT a "how-to" book, but for those who know what they're doing it's definitely got a lot of good(bad?) ideas in it.
Book Description
An authoritative study of the dangers nations face today from weapons of mass destruction and the successes and failures of international nonproliferation efforts. This proliferation atlas documents with maps, charts, and graphs the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and missile delivery systems. The book describes the weapons and the regimes that try to control them; it also details the countries that have, want, or have given up weapons of mass destruction.
Deadly Arsenals provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive assessment available on the subject as well as updated data from the bestselling book Tracking Nuclear Proliferation: A Guide in Maps and Charts, 1998. It is a valuable resource for policymakers, scholars, students, and the media.
Customer Reviews:
Superbly Researched, Prolific, Frighteningly True.......2003-03-06
This is one of the best and most comprehensive bookshelf volumes on the topic of nuclear, biological, chemical and conventional weapons production, proliferation, and stockpiling. Organized by weapons system type and geographic location, Cirincione and his research team provide a straightforward and rather frightening catalog of current programs and stockpiles, as well as regional and country-specific forecasts.
Though it is not the most comprehensive coverage of the topics, it is the best source of information that one can lift single-handedly. The only other single-source volumes you'll find on these topics are issued by the U.S. government and contain thousands of pages.
If you need to know something about weapons of mass destruction or ballistic missile programs, this is the book to reference.

Book Description
Prolific munitions production keyed America's triumph in World War II but so did the complex economic controls needed to sustain that production. Artillery, tanks, planes, ships, trucks, and weaponry of every kind were constantly demanded by the military and readily supplied by American business. While that relationship was remarkably successful in helping the U.S. win the war, it also raised troubling issues about wartime economies that have never been fully resolved.
Focusing on the mobilization of national resources for a truly global war, Paul Koistinen analyzes all relevant aspects of the World War II economy from 1940 through 1945, describing the nation's struggle to establish effective control over industrial supply and military demand--and revealing the growing partnership between the corporate community and the armed services. Koistinen traces the evolution of federal agencies mobilizing for war--including the National Defense Advisory Commission, the Office of Production Management, and the Supply Priorities and Allocation Board--and then focuses on the work of the War Production Board from 1942-1945. As the war progressed, the WPB and related agencies oversaw the military's supply and procurement systems; stabilized the economy while financing the war; closely monitored labor relations; and controlled the shipping and rationing of fuel and food.
Koistinen reveals how representatives of industry and the armed services expanded upon their growing prewar ties to shape policies for harnessing the economy, and how federal agencies were subsequently riven with dissension as New Deal reformers and anti-New Deal corporate elements battled for control over mobilization itself. As the armed services emerged as the principal customers of a command economy, the military-industrial nexus consolidated its power and ultimately succeeded in bending the reformers to its will.
Koistinen shows that mobilization meant more than simply harnessing the economy for war--it also involved struggles for power and position among a great many interest groups and ideologies. He provides an ambitious and enormously insightful overview of the emergence of the military-industrial economy, one that still resonates today as America continues to wage wars around the globe.
