Highly Recommended.......2007-02-18
Having read and studied most of the more popular books available on the subject, I bought this book with a view to getting a different perspective, rather than any hope for new insights.
Upon reading it I was more than pleasantly surprised by the content. It has to be one of the best books I've read on the subject.
Like most of the reviewers, I wouldn't recommend it as a first book for someone wanting to learn hold `em. Some of the views expressed in the book are unconventional and not appropriate for beginners. However, barring the complete novice, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book as one of the top 5 most useful books I've read (and I've read quite a few). Not because of it's groundbreaking suggestions, but rather this book is genuinely aimed at getting the reader to think about why he should make a particular decision. It helps the reader to think like an experienced hold `em player, rather than providing a set of rules for play in specific circumstances.
For instance, in his chapter on seat selection, when he recommends that you sit maniacs to your left (contrary to most authors who recommend the opposite), it comes after a discussion of the varying perspectives or `theories' of poker. According to Carson, most authors focus on the fact that `poker is a game of incomplete information'. In his view, however, the `poker is a game of strategy and deception' theory is more appropriate when making this particular decision. "You get very little extra information from having a maniac on your right, but having him on your left expands your tactical playing options tremendously".
There is no false pretence that this is the only book you will ever need on hold `em. In fact the author provides frank reviews of the more popular hold `em books with honest opinions on their value.
Whether you agree or not is irrelevant; rather it is the thought process that matters. This is a book that will definitely help develop your thought on the game of hold `em poker.
Very good book in need of a new title........2006-12-31
This is one of the best Texas Hold'em books out there. Gary has an interesting way of looking at the game that is thought provoking. His insights can make you a better player, but I suggest trying to digest the material here slowly. It is easy to misunderstand or misapply the concepts here. Like any other good poker book, this is a book that you should study, rather than just read.
There is very little discussion of the specifics of pot-limit, no-limit, spread-limit, and tournament poker in this book. The book does discuss these topics, but those chapters are thin and seem to be added as an afterthought. Nonetheless, much of the material is applicable to any form of Texas Hold'em, once you understand it well. It does seem that Gary is primarily a limit Hold'em player, or that he was when he wrote this book.
Also, Gary Carson is an active participant of the Usenet group rec.gambling.poker. Gary has clarified some of the concepts in his book on this public forum.
Great Incomplete Book.......2006-09-16
The only thing I don't like about this book is the title. This is a great book for limit holdem cash games. It is applicable in online or live play and would be helpful if the game were tight or loose, passive or aggressive. In fact, one of the great strengths of the book is how it helps one evaluate the table and play according to who is actually there and not according to how some group of players were playing at a $40/80 table in Las Vegas in 1978.
The emphasis on table selection and on flexibility in play makes this a valuable tool for increasing ones profits or even for the beginner. Rather than giving formulas (formulae?) Carson gives guidelines for thinking about situations. The tables of starting hands that he provides should be taken with a grain of salt, as he says himself.
But enough of Mr. Nice Guy, why did I call it incomplete?
1: He only touches on big-bet Holdem, No-Limit and Pot-Limit. The advice he gives on it big-bet is very good. In fact some of it is extremely valuable. However, it is only a splash in the very lage pond. This is understandable because the NL boom had not arrived at the time the book was released. NL tourneys were common but cash games all over the country were still overwhelmingly limit.
While understandable, it is a shame becuase NL has become more important as the months go by and because Mr. Carson has been a succesful NL cash player and knows what he is talking aobut.
2: His tournament advice is also brief, not inspired and not worth mentioning. If all you want to do is play tourneys, the book is worth the low price but that's about it.
So why do I give it five *s?
Because my hourly rate in the LHE games at Foxwoods, which was already good, doubled in the few months after I read this book and absorbed its ideas.
The Best Hold 'Em Book, Period.......2006-06-01
I found this book while reading Matt Matros' "The Making of a Poker Player". Matros has this book as one of the seven he recommends unequivocally. Had it not been for Matros, I would not have known of Gary Carson's book.
This treasure of a book seems to be hidden from the general poker public. I play online exclusively, and I've asked various tablemates about the book. Almost no one seems to know about it. This is an absolute hidden gem, so superior to anything else out there.
The book is not for the complete beginner. In fact Carson himself recommends starting with Lee Jones' "Winning Low Limit Hold 'Em" or Ed Miller's "Getting Started in Hold 'Em". But, after having read and maybe reread one of those two, I'd suggest diving right into "The Complete Book of Hold 'Em" and staying with it for about a year or so. I don't see the need for any other book of poker instruction during that time, except perhaps Carson's own "Casino Poker" in which he introduces most of the different games of poker. (If you just have to read something else, I really like John Feeney's "Inside the Poker Mind" and Roy Cooke's "Real Poker II".)
Well, what about Sklansky, Malmouth, Ciaffone, Hellmuth, Krieger et al? Nope, you don't need any of them. For at least a year, Carson's book is plenty. In fact I would recommend strongly against them, since they could confuse the rock solid foundation you are building with Carson.
What makes this book so good? That is not easy to answer. Carson involves himself with the reality of playing poker; it's a situational approach. He does not fit the game into one single theory. He takes multipe perspectives. He admits it's not an easy, cookbook style (that's what Jones and Miller are for), but it is the only completely honest one. This is a new way of thinking that is levels above what the other poker authors are writing. Other reviewers who have liked the book say how it has changed their thinking, their approach to play; it does if the student puts in the time for study that is required. He will not be spoonfed. He will have to think. But what a difference it will make at the tables!
The book is revolutionary. Why it is not better known, why I had to find it by such a roundabout route, is beyond me. But when you find out it exists, Matusow (my hero) would call you a donkey not to buy it. One other plus which I don't think is trivial in poker literature; Carson knows how to write.

Appendixes include a list of major events in frisbee history, a glossary of terms, and lists of frisbee organizations, publications, manufacturers, collectors, and dealers.
Customer Reviews:
The complete Book of Frisbee.......2007-07-05
Being an old dog, I was around for much of the late 70's, early 80's history that Victor alludes to. It was great to take this look down memory lane, as well as find a lot of new information. The disc trading guide has already proved itself helpful. I strongly recommend this book for any flying disc enthusiast.
Wonderful reference.......2006-04-29
I love this book! It's the only one I have as a reference as to the history of Frisbee/Frisbies. I admit, the prices in my edition (1998) are out of date--they continue to go up!
I refer to this book all the time and each time I pick up something new. It's loaded with tons of great photos. It's a MUST for any Frisbee/flying disc lover.
I'm disappointed in the direction Wham-o has taken lately and the quality of the product they are now producing, but the history of Frisbees and the people involved along the way make this book a must-have!
One will have a much greater appreciation for those little flying discs (no matter what they're called or whose name is on them) once they have read this book.
Outstanding Guide, Historically Significant.......2003-04-24
This book is a must for anyone associated with or interested in Frisbees, golf discs and Frisbie Pie Tins. Not only does it provide a guide for determining value of many highly collectible discs, it's entertaining, well-written, and well-designed. A collector's item in its own right and I highly recommend.

Price Guide lacking current collectable prices(1998).......2000-12-12
If you're buying this book as a priceguide to old or collectable frisbees, you should know this. Since the advent of online auctioning after 1998, many more frisbees have come out of the closet. Therefore, the priceguide part of the book is woefully out of date. Most collectable Frisbee prices as stated in the book are overvalued by 30-60%. I hope a revision of this book is printed soon.
For frisbee collectors only.......2000-06-15
Don't be fooled by the title, this is not the complete book of frisbee. Ultimate only rates a couple of pages, for starters. There is nothing to speak of on throwing technique. It is not particularly well edited, either - many assertions and heresay have slipped through the net. Lots of nice pictures of collectable discs, if that's what you're into. A bit of a disappointment given the dearth of books-in-print about throwing technique and ultimate.

How to refigure your assets as the bidding proceeds
Customer Reviews:
Hand Evaluation - just like the title says.......2007-02-15
You hold AQTx in a suit. 6 HCP. The suit is overcalled on your right. Its likely RHO holds the K and J. Your hand is worth maybe 2 extra tricks (finesse the T and Q). Lets say LHO overcalls the suit instead. Oh, oh! Bad news, they probably have the K and J, your hand is probably good for 1 trick, though its still got stoppers for NT.
The books has many bidding sequences where your hand fluctuates in value.
A singleton in your partners first bid suit is not necessarily an asset as their suit is hard to set up and secondary honors are worthless.
Axx gives you control as to when to take the ace - 1st 2nd or 3rd round. COmpared to a stiff ace.
You need some practical experience to get something out of the book. Read some books, play for a year, THEN read this. This is beyond counting HCP
No ZAR points or silver bullets, just how to dynamically value your hand.
An "average player's" reaction.......2005-09-09
Someone once charitably described me as an "average player." So, take my review for what it is worth.
I believe that this is an excellent book for its target audience. But, most novices are probably not ready to make much use of it.
The introduction says that it is for "experienced bridge players." I would interpret that as meaning those who have completed a series of beginning classes (perhaps based on the Audrey Grant - ACBL - series) and have played at least a year.
The book is well written. (An enhanced discussion of what Lawrence terms "shell points" would have been helpful to me.)
It helped me to understand in a more profound way how both "shape" and competitive auctions affect hand evaluation.
I think that this is a very insightful book, which I will read and re-read several times.
Good advice on every aspect of evaluation.......2003-05-02
A must for any serious player. Good advice on every aspect of reevaluating your hand as the bidding proceeds by one of the most readable of all bridge authors.
Which is more valuable, an ace or a queen?.......2000-03-25
This book is superb; the author's thoughts flow through my mind during every auction, competitive or not. He discusses in detail, for example, when a holding of xxx in a suit opened by opponents is terrible, neutral, or mildly positive. The studious reader will understand why a hand which opened 1 Spade with xxxxxx in spades improves vastly more than a hand which opened 1 Spade with KQJTx when partner raises Spades vigorously (in Lawrence's words, "Beware the short stubby suit.") Attention to the principles carefully explained and extensively illustrated (sometimes the same hand is geven with half a dozen different auctions to explain evaluation niceties) by Lawrence will vastly reduce your phantom sacrifices, -800s when dummy hit with "all the wrong cards," and +1370s which delight your teammates, who were -630 defending 3NT at the other table when their opponents never looked for a minor-suit slam.

Want to become an overcalls expert?.......2005-08-30
Everything you need to know about overcalls. That's all.
(4card overcalls are simply outstanding).
Deep and detailed.......2005-01-21
First the downside: Its a bit of work going through this book. This is not some light read, with lots of jokes. Expect to spend a lot of time thinking aabout whats going on given a bidding sequence, and your hand. You want to improve? You have to work at it!
The upside: This will really help you to understand not just overcalls, but hand evaluation, bidding, opening leads, defense, and what in general is going on. Who holds what, etc.
Its a study of whats going on in all 4 players hands, given the information of a single bid, or one round of bidding. Why, with the exact same hand, you can overcall with one sequence, and pass with the other. I spent a few weeks reading this, going over the hundreds of sequences and hands. I'm now more aware of certain lurking dangers, and what to look out for.
Don't talk, walk.......2004-01-10
Mike Lawrence must be a direct descendant of Sherlock Holmes! He uses every scrap of information available on any particular hand/auction, and uses these to arrive at the best bid to make. And it is because of this attention to detail that this (and his other books) are intended for those players in the intermediate or advanced category.
Interesting to place this book's approach alongside more modern bridge textbooks. Take the likes of Cohen's 'Law of Total Tricks'. It expounds the 'Law' and then illustrates how a player should use it via a modest selection of example hands. By contrast, Mike Lawrence bombards the reader with every conceivable hand and explains (albeit in logical order) how you should be thinking about these along the way.
This hardly SEEMS a sound teaching approach: the type is small, there is loads of repetition (Lawrence admits it), and the 'quizzes' at the end of each section are not organised in a 'reader-friendly' way.
But where this book succeeds and some modern books fail, is curiously in its insistence upon looking at each hand in a strictly individual way, as opposed to selling out to easy mnemonics or rules.
While more modern books (take one of Eddie Kantar's books on defence, which I also think are excellent) are nicely presented, contain witty 'after-dinner' asides, and have an interactive feel, their neatness sometimes makes me feel that bridge is all clearcut rules and decisions, hard for the beginner, easy for the expert.
But Mike Lawrence seems to be experiencing real pain on many of his example deals! You will frequently see him write, 'I don't know what to do with this hand', not because he's not a good player, but because he understands the difference, for a bridge player, between 'knowing the path' and 'walking the path'.
The writer of this book won't sit on his pedestal and lecture you with rules, he will walk the path WITH you. If you will take the time to let him lead you, it should prove time well spent.
Excellent advice on overcalls.......2003-05-02
The classic book on overcalls. Excellent advice on non-vulnerable overcalls at the one level and on which overcalls to avoid. Newer players might want to start with Edgar Kaplan's Competitive Bidding in Modern Bridge
Insightful and well written.......2001-11-21
This book is probably the best book on bridge ever written. There is so much insight in this book that you will have to re-read it time and time again each time adding to your own insight in not only overcalling but the game as a whole. The style is lucid sometimes nonchalant; Lawrence gives insight into his own considerations when making bidding decisions and makes it clear that many decisions are not absolute. But following the logic and type of arguments he presents you will get more and more decisions right. I strongly recommend this book to every bridge player who aspires to improve his or her game.

Customer Reviews:
What a Disappointment!.......2006-02-23
I was looking for a modern equivalent to _Goren's Bridge Complete_, which was sufficient to answer almost any question or resolve almost any disagreement back when I played bridge 35-45 years ago. I had already bought a used copy of the 1985 revision of that work, retitled _Goren's New Bridge Complete_, but it didn't include some things I'd encountered since I resumed play during the past year.
When I spotted the book at hand, in a revised edition from 1994, I believed I had found what I was looking for.
Initially I was pleased that Chapter 1 describes and illustrates the mechanics of play, from the moment one first sits down at the bridge table all the way through the play of the hand. Not that I needed that information myself, but for someone who has been invited to play for the first time the material could prove to be both instructive and calming.
However, by Chapter 3 the bad news was upon me. The author recommends weak bids of one no-trump (i.e., 12-14 high card points, rather than the old-time 16-18 or the more modern 15-17). Even more perplexing, he recommends opening with only a four-card major suit. Even Goren, or his editorial board, relented to the trend toward minimum five-card major suit openings, and that was back in 1985.
Because of the far-reaching implications of these two methods, the first 163 pages (the entire Part 1, on bidding) is largely worthless to me, as I think it would be to anyone who plays, or intends to play, what one might loosely call the "American Standard" bidding system.
Perhaps I'll find something of value in Parts 2 and 3, dealing with the play of the hand. However, I already have the books by Watson and by Mollo & Gardener, as well as the two introductory books (on declarer play and defense, respectively) by Kaplan. I expect that this book will prove to be worthless to me.
In that case, why do I give it three stars? Because the book seems at a quick glance to be complete and well-written. The chapters end with sections such as "Over Zia's Shoulder", "Summary" and "Frequently Asked Questions". In some cases this material adds perspective, while in others it provides useful repetition of essential material. I suspect that someone interested in adopting what I presume is a British-influence approach to bidding will find this book helpful.

When should you keep the bidding open?.......2003-05-02
The definitive book on when to keep the bidding open.
A Masterpiece!!.......2001-08-30
I just complete reading this book today. Even though now it's 21st century, this book stands well. You can find every situation you 'll encounter at the bridge table everyday. The dangerous and safe suits theory is one of the only two ways you should follow in auctions. It will enable you not losing your IMPs, MPs or even money. Trsut me, not those specular or fantasic declare's plays make you win, but those competitive biddings and solid defenses make you win. If you want to be a winner at table, buy this one and Mike's another book 'Complete book on Overcall'. Of course, 'To bid or not to bid','Kantar teaches Modern Denfese' and 'Kantar teaches Advanced Defense' also will make you a winner. And those classic 'Abbott' series just can amuse you and won't make you a winner.
Terrific book on a little discussed part of the game.......1999-06-04
Lawrence is probably the best writer on the game of bridge today. All his books are world class, but this is one of his best. Balancing is rarely discussed in bridge books, but presents difficult problems. Using the same style he used in "The Complete Book of Hand Evaluation," Lawrence examines all the common balancing situations. He discusses hand evaluation, planning a balancing auction, and common understandings (and misunderstandings). Lawrence's tone is never dogmatic: the emphasis is on specific examples and how to analyze situations rather than on mechanical rules. Where there is a choice of methods, he says so, discusses examples, the consensus approach, and his personal reference. Where a problem has no good solution, he does something unusual for a writer about games, he says so! Anything by Mike Lawrence is worth the money!
Complete, clear, thorough discussion of balancing........1999-04-01
Superb! This book has helped my game (particularly match-point pairs, but also IMP Swiss teams) immensely. Read it 5 times and insist your partners read it. Don't let your opponents read it.

Easy Read.......2007-05-13
I like the way this book explains the games. They are concise and the preface of the box gives a good description of the terms used to describe the games. This is nice to give you something to refer back to. Also, the illustrations of each layout is very nice.
The New Testament for card players........2002-10-09
If According to Hoyle by Moorehead was card-game bible when I was a child, this book was certainly a new testament.
I really didn't fit in well with other kids, so I had nothing much to do. So, I studies solitaires. But I had 150 ways to play solitaire, and all that book did was confuse me.
When I found this book at KayBee many years ago, I was most impressed. It's the clearest book on cardgames that I have ever read. They're even thoughtful enough to create two games, Joker Klondike and Joker Canfield.
This book will clarify almost any game, and I still pull it down from the shelf. In fact, I think I'll pull it out right after I've finished posting.
The Complete Book of Solitaire and Patience Games.......2002-08-24
Detailed instructions, illustrations, terminology, time requirements, and odds in winning of over 225 of the most challenging and fascinating card games ever invented from the famous Canfield Solitaire to Napoleon's Forty Theives. It's here -- everything you need to know about Solitaire and Patience games.
Pretty good.......2002-07-21
I bought this book so I could learn different ways to play solitaire. It has pictures and plenty of instructions. I do wish it had a few more pictures so I could see how they were saying to lay them out but all in all it is pretty good.
Excellent reference for the solitaire player.......1998-06-16
I find this book to be very helpful in learning different solitaire games. Some games don't include layout diagrams but the instructions are well done. I highly recommend it for a beginner solitaire player.

Full Of Mistakes plusss a pokemon advertisement.......2006-06-03
This book spells the simplest of names wrong and labels Agumon as Gabumon. Its as if it was written by someone whos never even seen the show. Plus on one of the pages there is an advertisement for pokemon! ick much.
DO NOT GET THIS BOOK!.......2000-08-25
Even though I am a Digimon fan, there is TOO MANY MISTAKES in this book!If you want a good Digimon guide get the official digimon character guide. There is mistakes in that one was well, but only a little.
Well-inentioned, but full of mistakes........2000-07-22
The writers of this book sound like Digimon fans, espeically when one article author describes his lengthy hunt for the original LCD virtual pets.
However, the proofreading leaves a little to be desired. For each of the Digi-destined, they have pictures of their Digimon in various stages, taken from the cards. However, cards and names do not always match.
i.e.: Gabumon; Agumon card is shown. A Candlemon card is shown instead of Zudomon.
The names of the kids' crests are sometimes incorrect, and WarGreymon is constantly spelled WereGreymon.
This probably won't mean much to the younger fans, however, who get to look at pictures of the toys, cards, and Digimon, as well as a mini episode guide.
Though this is better if you're looking for an alternative to buying more than one Digmon book (i.e., one for the cards, one for the characters, etc.) it's still a decent Digimon book, if you can ignore some of the glaring errors
Pojo's Total Digimon.......2000-06-03
This is an exact duplicate of their Card Collector World magazine Special Digimon issue. This is OLD information. I bought their magazine and then bought this book. Since this book is exactly like their magazine THIS WAS a total waste of my money. Creativity is poor.
Review.......2000-05-14
This is a pretty good book with a lot of information, if you watch digimon, collect any of the card game, you should find this book pretty interesting. It would help if it had more info about the ty show.
