Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-04-10
I have looked through this book and I like it. It could use a bit more detail on the drawings but I think there is enough detail to get the job done. I am an experienced woodworker and I was looking for a book with plans so my daughter and I could make some bird houses. This book does the trick.
Glad I Read the Reviews.......2007-02-08
I'm glad I read the reviews and purchased this book. For the price you certainly can't complain you didn't get your bang for the buck! It's written in an easy-to-understand format and loaded with lots of useful information and ideas. If you want to build birdhouses and have a basic understanding of working with wood (and I mean basic like knowing the difference between a nail and a screw) then this is the book for you.
Well-written...helpful.......2005-04-01
Excellent book. Straightforward wasy instructions. You can buy the wood and go from the plans or you can buy simple kits to assemble [...]
Sketchy and confusing plans.......2003-05-14
This book does have a lot of good information, but the drawings are sketchy and inadequate for a beginning woodworker. Even worse, the drawings are rarely next to the relevant text. For instance, when you're reading the Purple Martin house instructions, you're looking at the Phoebe house.
Excellent reference and plans book.......2001-02-01
This book is very helpful for making birdhouses. Not only does it give you several plans for birdhouses it also provides detailed information on different bird species. That information will help you know what type of house to build, opening sizing and more.
I got this for my nine year old daughter and she really likes it. So, it's pretty easy to read and other than the charts is not too dry to read either.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource for beginners.......2006-12-30
Recently, I have developed an interest in working with wood. I have created a few things on my own, mostly wooden toys to distribute this last christmas. Woodworking is a hobby that can be quite overwhelming in both the lack of and the excess of information available. There are so many things to consider, such as tools, wood, stains, joinery, etc. This sometimes makes the beginning woodworker feel that his/her best bet would be to put the tools back in the box and have a rummage sale.
I received this book as a Christmas present. I find the information contained within extremely helpful. It gives a breakdown on most tools available and their uses. It explains the proper techniques for working with woods, the stains available, the varying quality of the material, as well as how some woods will respond to tools and stains. I could not pick a better one volume resource.

A Technical Overview in Plain Language.......2001-12-31
This is an excellent book for the history of style, proportions, and ergonomics. It is especially useful for the cabinetmaker who is custom designing furniture. The golden section (golden rectangle) is covered in the most precise detail I have ever seen. The tables and charts are extremely helpful in the design stage of any project. If you design furniture, you'll definitely want this book in your library.
Introduces process and principles into the art of design.......1999-10-02
An excellent book which has earned a spot over my drawing table. Superbly covers form/function, visualization, standardized (ergo) vs. personalized design, and construction principles. Covers drawing, drafting and CAD well. Includes a brief history of furniture.
The math is suited for the drawing table rather than the shop, as you should expect for a design book. The hows and whys of design principles are explored, some not as conclusively as I'd like.
The book is well illustrated with many relavent line drawings, charts, and graphs. It is nicely laid out, easy to read, and pleasing to look at.
Nice job, Mr. Graves!

"Bend me, shape me, anyway you want me.".......2006-09-17
This book is more than just veneer. It has the look and feel of a coffee table book. There are glossy pictures and plenty of diagrams. However after the shock and awe, you will find this a great overview of many wood working disciplines. This book has information on everything from the history and makeup of various woods to tools used in various types of wood working.
My interest is mostly in turning and turning tools. There a tab in the margin of the book page that leads you to similar information on the subject. This is the in print version of a Hyper Link.
After absorbing this book you will have a better feel for what how you want to proceed. Then the book is still useful for a reference. If you do not actually indulge, at lease you can hold an intelligent conversation.

Customer Reviews:

Originally published around seventy years ago. An excellent well illustrated reference for the various hand planes and the use and care of other basic hand tools. Thourough instruction of sharpening, joinery and the proper design and constrution of furniture. Like sharing a shop with a master that speaks only when you ask.

A woodworking wonder.......2004-03-15
This book has it all. Not only does it give valuable reference material, it delivers it with grace. It does not read like a reference book. It reads like a well-written piece of literature that is not only easy to follow, but also engaging as well. It's interesting and informative. Mine is out on loan to a friend who won't give it back. Though the book is worth sharing, if you lend it, you may never see it again.

Fantasic book for beginners in woodworking!.......2007-09-09
This book covers about all aspects of woodworking! Very well written, too! I think it is geared towards beginners and intermediate woodworkers, with a list of the most used woods, with characteristics, and cautions for each different species. It also gives a basic understanding of each tool type, as well as their use and maintenence. I am fairly new to woodworking and this ahs been a great read for me! I highly reccomend it!

Must have book for every woodworker's library.......2004-08-26
I have read many books on woodworking, The Complete Woodworker's Companion is the only reference book I own. Roger Holmes has written a very concise and relevant book on the fundamentals of woodworking; including tools, wood preparation, construction methods, and finishing. The galleries of modern masterpieces are just as interesting and educational as the chapters on woodworking. Every beginning and intermediate woodworker should read this book cover to cover and then read it again.
Clear writing, great photos - very helpful!.......2000-07-29
This was the first woodworking how-to book I bought and it has been very informative and I reference it often. With many helpful photos, the author does a good job of explaining all of the basic woodworking fundamentals (how to 4-square wood, how to cut joints, different projects, etc.). There is also a balance between using machines and hand tools. Recommended.

Looked over the book in a local bookstore and was intrigued by the furniture designs found in the book. Picked it up and found that the projects were as simple to make as indicated in the plans. Would highly recommend the book for weekend workshop hobbyists who want woodworking projects that are challenging and rewarding to work with.
