an extremely helpful guide for a challenging game.......2005-03-04
Bradygames brings us this strategy guide for Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the Playstation 2. This is a fairly large paperback edition and is filled with details about the game and color screenshots from the game. The most important thing to note about this guide is that it only covers the walkthrough of the game on the "Normal" difficulty setting. While the maps would be the same on "Easy" or "Hard", the number of enemies and their locations would change on the more challenging difficulties. The location of certain items may also change, but this guide does not cover any other difficulty but "Normal". Since I played through the game on "Normal" mode, I can speak for how helpful it was for that difficulty.
The first thing to note is that this guide is packed with information. The guide begins by covering all of the items, weapons, camouflage, and different fighting techniques. Everything is listed at the start of the guide. This is very nice, but I didn't find myself flipping back to check out the techniques or items. I just used whatever basic moves that I could remember and worked my way through the game and took whatever came my way.
The real reason to buy a guide, however, is the walkthrough of the game. Before every section of the game, this guide includes a map of the area and small diagrams of where the enemies are and what sort of patrol pattern that they walk. This is helpful, but not nearly as much as it was in the guide for Metal Gear Solid 2. The problem here is simply that instead of being inside a building the entire game, the player is mostly outside in a forest or swamp. So, while the guards may walk a particular pattern it was difficult to determine just where you are on the map. What the map truly helped with was to give a general idea of where the enemies are, how many, and a general idea of where the items are. The text walkthrough (with some screenshots) is where the true value of this guide is. The text is clear in where you are, where you are going, and what you have to face. I've been playing video games for at least fifteen years, but Metal Gear Solid 3 is a challenging game without a walkthrough. The boss strategies are also quite helpful and helped me to beat them (as well as helped me defeat a couple of bosses with only the tranquilizer dart).
There is also a section which covers little "Easter Eggs", like hidden posters and figurines which reference previous Metal Gear games. It isn't terribly important, but it does add a little extra flavor. There is also a walkthrough of the Snake Vs Monkey mini-game (which I didn't bother playing).
Without this guide I would have missed many items (I have no doubt about that), been spotted by guards more often than I was (which was often), been killed many more times than I was (very few times), and spent quite a bit more time than the 24 hours that it took me to conquer the game. While this guide could have been more clear and helpful with maps and enemy locations, it was invaluable in getting me through this game. The guide is probably not essential to get the player through this game, but I have to say that it helps a lot.

Almost Perfect.......2004-12-10
Metal Gear Solid 3 is an incredible game no matter how you play it. But go through it without some help and you're bound to miss something. This guide is almost perfect in everyway possible. But there are some troubling things that keep this guide down a little.
First of all, this tome is jampacked with tons of helpful tips. Everything you need in the opening pages to know about the game is there. The guide details on all the basics of CQC. From the basics to the advanced tactics. You'll be a master of CQC. The guide also spends a lot of time detailing everything about the food.
The food section tells you if you can use it on enemies or not and how. They also tell you how it taste and whether its worth eating or not. The cure section tells you all you need to cure wounds and how to do it.
The walkthrough is very well written. Each section has a detailed set of maps, the location of every guard and the location of every item. It's very well written too, with EXCELLENT boss strategies that help out really well. Each portion of the walkthrough is broken down by area rather than objective. This is great in the sense that it's more organized. The walkthrough is actually done really well with great tactics. This is easily one of the most well written walkthroughs I've ever read.
The Easter Eggs and secrets are really cool. They go into detail on some of the better ones and talk about the bonuses and such. The secrets chapter is also done well. Alongside that, the Snake vs. Monkeys is also done really well. Each strategy to take on the monkeys helps you get excellent times and even first place assuming you take them in the recommended orders.
Then there's the stuff after the meat of the game. The interviews are spectacular and help you learn more than anything about the production of the game and the MGS series. After that there's an excerpt from the Konami Comic Book of Metal Gear Solid. This is an incredible comic. It may actually make you want to by the series.
But the guide isn't without a few faults. For one, the walkthrough is only written for Normal mode. There are areas where there are more guards and such and the guide doesn't talk about that. What's the difference between playing the game on Normal and Extreme? You'd be surprised how many hardcore MGS fans just jump to Hard Mode without ever touching the lower difficulty levels.
The guide also mentions that there are "secret" frequencies to call but they never tell you what the frequency is! They mention that you have to interrogate a guard in order to get it. But they still don't detail what the frequency is or what it does...
Then there's the biggy (and the reason five stars was an impossible feet), there are several easter eggs and secrets missing! They don't mention that you can get the EZ Gun on other difficulty levels nor do they mention anything of the infinity face paint. Not only that but they never mention how it is you're supposed to come across certain ranks. All the ranks are listed but how do I get say... the "FOX" ranking? The guide doesn't detail it.
It really is a good guide, almost perfect. But the small tidbits (and the one rather large rat) are annoying at times. I wish it was a bit more detailed on some of the secrets and gave more insight for the different difficulty levels.
Either way though, this is the perfect MGS3 companion. You shouldn't have any trouble getting through the game without it. It'll help you conquer the game and even master it at some point. But be warned that this guide is only good for its walkthrough and not much else.

AUTHORISEDCOLLECTION strategy guide is the BEST!.......2003-12-11
If you want to play this game with a strategy guide, then your best option is to forget Bradygames and Prima, because authorisedcollection has a much much more detailed and thorough explanation of the game. I had a look at the reviews that 4 or 5 stars are put, they just didn't know what real strategy guide should look at. If you want to have the ranking of the legendary "Big Boss" in the game, go try authorisedcollection guide, otherwise you are just wasting your time playing this game. I'm not trying to offend Bradygames and Prima, but authorisedcollection series the best.
If you are a Final Fantasy fan, go and compare guides from authorisedcollection and bradygames and you will know what I meant above.
the worlds best.......2003-06-12
This guide is the most helpful when you are stuck at a certain place in the game that seems impossible to get past!!! The guide is in-depth and simple at the same time. If your stuck then this guide is for you. (this guide is CHEAP and easy to buy to help you)
an excellent guide if you play through on normal mode.......2003-04-16
I was almost finished with Metal Gear Solid 2 when I stopped playing for almost a year. When I went to play again, I realized that I didn't remember the story that well and I didn't remember the layout of the area I was in. I decided to restart the game, but this time use a guide to make sure that I don't miss any items and to quickly get through the areas I had already played. Since this was the only guide available, I picked it up.
Some reviews of this guide make mention that the guide is not actually needed to complete the game and that simply playing the game is all the strategy that one needs. That may very well be, but I don't think that applies in reviewing the guide. What matters is that the guide has all of the necessary information required to complete the game and not miss any items and that it includes tips on how to beat the bosses. This guide has all of that and is very valuable in completing the game. While many things can be discovered by trial and errors, this guide will get you through the game with no trouble (the only trouble may come in actually applying the strategies to beat a boss). The most valuable aspect of this guide comes in that it details on a map the patrol patterns of the guards. Knowing in advance how far a guard will patrol is very useful in planning your path though the level. If capturing the dog tags from the soldiers is important to you (and if you want the bonus items, it should be important), the guide provides useful strategies on how to get every dog tag in the game (on normal mode). I tried out some of them, and it worked just as the guide suggested. I wasn't that interested in collecting the dog tags my first time completing the game, so I didn't spend the time to collect them all. As far as I could tell, the strategies were spot on.
One thing I should mention is that the strategies to get the dog tags and for beating the game apply to the normal difficulty setting. Since some things change on the higher difficulty levels, the guide is probably not as useful for mastering the game on the highest difficulty.
Using this guide for the normal difficulty level, this is an excellent guide that will take you through the game and not spoil and story points. If you feel you need a guide for Metal Gear Solid 2, this one is well worth your money.
Great collectors item and good for game info, too.......2002-09-01
I'll be honest with you. This book is designed really well. It is one of two BradyGames books right now in the "Signature" series -- strategy guides that feature higher-quality paper, very well-designed walkthroughs, and an extra like a poster. Unlike other guides, you don't get lost in all the small text trying to figure out where you were reading when you last looked up from the book. The strategy actually goes guard-by-guard, so you can use it if you're stuck trying to get past a specific guard, or you can use it to walk you through the whole game.
The reason I gave this guide four out of five stars is because it really only contains the minimum information you need to complete the game. Sure, there are blurbs about secrets and stuff, but I just didn't get the feeling that this was a book chock full of "insider's info" on MGS2.
Great!.......2001-12-28
I have to say say than when I get stuck this helps me out a lot. Thanks Bradygames.

A Nice Metal Gear Solid Collector's Package.......2007-05-27
This strategy guide is a good companion for the game, but certainly targeted more at die hard fans, and collectors who will be more interested in the (included) Art of Metal Gear Solid concept art book. Allot of the notations in the artwork and sketches are in japanese and untranslated, but that's a fairly nit-picky complaint--overall, it's been pretty well done, and is very nice. In general, the guide has pretty much everything you would expect it to have, including maps, items lists and locations, Kerotan locations, enemy and boss stats, and of course, walkthroughs with strategy suggestions that are actually pretty sound most of the time. Presentation, and production values on this guide are very good, and the guide is very nice overall--in particular, the book folder, and the limited edition guide its self has a different cover than standard guide.
What I didn't like however is how the items and enemies lists, and maps are sandwiched together in the front of the book--insuring allot of having to jump back and forth, and keep track of a bookmark. Also, it's quite pricey, and while used copies can be had for much more reasonable prices, collectors after one in good, or mint condition will still shell out more than what you'll pay for the standard guide (on average, 25-30 dollars). Overall though, this is a good guide--deciding whether or not you want it will depend quite heavily on how much of a Metal Gear Solid fan you are, and whether or not you bought the game as a permanent addition to your collection. But particularly with MGS4: Guns of the Patriots (the final chapter in the franchise) due in fall of this year, collector's like myself who have played, and collected every Metal Gear game, this guide is practically a must-buy item.
Great game, okay guide.......2006-03-16
Alright, so I have to say, this guide was a bit... average. While the maps were excellent, the secrets section and boss strategies were lacking. In fact, strategy was lacking throughout. They didn't even attempt to get you through the game without being seen or without killing anyone, which is the real challenge. I know how to run around killing everybody, I don't need that.
Metal Gear Solid 3 was a game that really encourages innovative use of the environment and your abilities to get around obstacles, and this guide didn't play to those strengths. I discovered more ways to kill the boss on my own then the guide told me about. It felt like it was a compilation of all the radio conversations you have with your support team. There was nothing new, really.
Finally, it was lacking in terms of secrets. Metal Gear Solid 3 was packed with secrets. This had only the most obvious.
It does get a thumbs up for the interviews in the back, those were very cool, and it is a strategy guide, but c'mon, give me a bit more.
Snake? Snnnnnaaaake!!!.......2005-08-23
This strategy guide is awesome! You must have this guide if you plan on beating the game on hard mode. The art book is sweet. It includes artwork from every Metal Gear Solid game. The foldout poster is pretty cool, too. It's about 1x5 pages wide and features Snake on one side and the MGS3 bosses on the other. The artbook and the strategy guide come in one book cover that looks cool. Both books can be removed and seperated. Blah, blah, blah, buy the thing already.
Meat Gear Fan?.......2005-07-28
If you are a Metal Gear Solid fan you really want this. It is worth every cent.
For really big fans.......2005-07-01
I really wanted to get the limited edition just because of the artbook, but there were other things i found out that surprised me. First off, the "strategy guide" itself doesnt look exactly the same as the regular one, it has a different cover front and back, and im not talking about the outside cover. You know of course, the strategy has everything you need for the game. But my favorite is the artbook. It was way better than I thought it would be, but without spoiling to much, some of the sketches go full depth into how some suits work and what some of the bosses carry on them, really interesting stuff. The only downside I would give this whole thing would be that the artbook is written in 90% Japanese notes. But hey, these really are original sketches so its not even a big deal. If you really need to, go to translate/com. If you own all MGS games, I strongly suggest you buy this book

The Same Great Story........In Comic Form!!!!!.......2006-04-05
As a huge fan of the MGS series. I will buy w/e product they through at me. Whether just a picture, or a comic book. I loved the story line to the MGS Series and now I can enjoy them without playing the games. I can get the laughs, the thrill, the adrenaline rush (More Like "WHAT'S ON THE NEXT PAGE!!!" adrenaline*). I even have to wake myself up to believe that I just didn't feel the grenade explode. The art pulls you into the story as you remember and relive the thrill. Any true MGS Fan will love this. And maybe buy another just to frame on your wall.
The same story........agian!?.......2006-01-10
Dont get my wrong I'm the biggest MGS freak alive, but this book isnt all that special. Its the exact same story as the first Metal Gear Solid game. The whole Shadow Moses incident. I bought this book intending on it to be a whole new story. A new experiance! However, I cracked back the first page and saw a familiar scene. I skimmed through it real quick. I was dissappointed. What I found was the same story, the same dialog, the same exact thing I lived through 7 years ago when I got the game. There is a tiny amout of dialog added to the story. NOT MUCH THOUGH! Thats about it for differences. Btw Dont think your getting the book in the picture. My cover is blue for some reason. Dont get be wrong. Its not ALL bad. I did give the an "ok" after all. The art is really really pretty. Not the best ever but definately pretty. It does have this crazy Physco Mantis interrigation of Grey Fox. I guess the real reason you should buy this book is to admire the art. If thats not what your after, then its a pass. I did enjoy looking at it. Finished it in about an hour. I just wish it had been less money. Now that you have been warned, the choice is yours.
Great Comic Book.......2005-08-25
This hardcover edition came with a card of a painting of Solid Snake that was signed and numbered by the artist Ashley Wood. The comic itself is excellent. Ashley Wood's art style is very unique and the writing by Kris Oprisko is done very well also. This hardcover features the first six issues of the comic. The comic is based on the original Metal Gear Solid game that was released by Konami in 1998. Several parts of the comic cover stuff only referred to in the game. This is a great buy for Metal Gear and comic book fans alike.

Its an okay Guide.......2002-09-06
I personally think that back then this guide was good for Prima (I really hated their guides when this first came out). But I really hate a lot ofthe things they do in this guide. You should go with the one from Konami or VERSUS BOOKS (but Versus is sold out....).
On the positive side the guide explains things in detail (a little too much detail if you know what I mean *plot spoilers*).
Sure, its nice that Prima gets down to business and doesn't joke around but because they get down to business they miss points in the game that could be important.
The guide has a good walkthrough and the maps are pretty good if you could deal with the soliton radar. Boss strategies aren't as in-depth as VERSUS BOOKS and they don't tell you everthing you can do.
Also, the guide is full of plot spoilers. You thought BradyGAMES was bad? Try this! They spoil the ending! After going through the game the ending is what we strive for! And if they spoil it I don't know about you but it kinda takes the fun out of the ending.
OVERALL:
Positive
+Map are good
+Gets down to business
Negative
-Spoils plot
-spoils endings
-not many secrets
-not quite as in depth as most other guides
Metal Gear Solid Alright Guide!.......2000-02-21
This guide goes into things in way too much detail . But the maps and item and weapon lists are great. And it does not fall apart like Final Fantasy Tactics Guide... If you still haven't completed Metal Gear solid I suggest you get this Guide now! You won't get lost with this guide!

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence.......2007-05-09
The guide was missing some stuff that it said it had. It was supposed to have maps of where to find the kerotans, but didn't. It didn't even talk about most of the hidden stuff in detail. I was disappointed.
Don't change what isn't broken.......2006-10-30
Thier were too many changes & additions to this game. The controls were very sketchy as was the terrain. The first two games were much better & had far more detailed level.
Don't Bother.......2006-04-22
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The original Strategy Guide had everything you would ever want or need. This seems to be a continuation guide. It gives you the secrets that weren't previously in the official guide... but the secrets that are in the official guide aren't included here. The walkthrough is pretty much the same, just a bit more compressed. The maps, and info presented in the main walkthrough is virtually the same.
There are several things that I wish would've been included in this guide. Truly, this guide should've been an expansion of the original one. For one, they took out the Kerotan locations (though they actually do mention the reward for finding them all). The original guide was 224 pages, and this one is 160. In this case, the numbers don't lie. You won't get nearly as much information from this guide as you would the original. No indepth look on camos or face paint. This includes the new camos you can find in this game.
They have maps for online mode and all, but I find that this is the only plus the guide has really got. New secrets get a mention, but not much of an explanation.
Worst of all? No walkthrough for the original Metal Gear or for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. This is unforgiveable. Without a walkthrough for these two games, the guide only further becomes useless. If you want a walkthrough for Snake Eater, you might as well get the original guide. All the extra content isn't explore enough in this guide. Maps for online mode don't make a fantastic guide. A basic walkthrough also doesn't make a fantastic guide. We're interested in the new content as well as the old. And while it does a fairly good job in the original walkthrough (it's basically the same, word for word), it's compressed to fit in the pages. Also, there's no help about CQC. If you're someone who never played Snake Eater and so you invested in Subsistence, this guide isn't going to help you adjust to CQC.
So in short, you might as well get the original guide. It doesn't have the coverage of Online mode or most of the new extras, but you're really not getting that by investing in this guide either.
This guide is crap, buy the Original Snake Eater guide.......2006-04-01
This guide is complete crap. Don't waste your money on this guide unless you want online maps. BUY THE ORIGINAL SNAKE EATER GUIDE. This guide does not cover details on the camo, face paints, weapons, CQC (close quarters combat), or show the locations of the kerotans.
Waste of Money.......2006-03-22
This guide was a total waste of money. The walk through is ok, but not nearly as good as the original guide. Also, they don't even cover much of the new content. The only monkey levels covered are in the original guide, not the extra. There is no kerotan map, no explaination of what the camo does, only a half page of secrets. There is no walk through of the original metal gears, and the dual mode guide is not worth the price. There are a lot of maps that have no key so you don't even know what all of the icons mean. The online guide is good, but this guide should only be bought as a supplement to the original. Not worth the price by any means though.

Not bad, but BradyGAMES has done so much better..........2005-05-10
When it comes to some guides, BradyGAMES doesn't slouch. If you look at guides like their Final Fantasy X guide and their Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, you know they make some good guides, trying to please the customer. Sometimes, however, they DO slouch, and when they do, it isn't pretty. Unfortunately, since the coming of their Signature Series, they've slouched a lot. Unless a guide is a part of the Signature Series, you're risking a lot by buying it. Sadly, this guide is not a Signature Series guide so you know they didn't take it seriously.
It seems as though the staff assumes that people who buy this guide have already played the original Metal Gear Solid on PSX. It's chalk full of spoilers! They even mention this on the first page. They also encourage you to use the guide only when you're stuck.
It is kind of cool that the first few pages of the guide tell you all the differences between the original version and this one, but that seems to be there to take up space. The game basics is also grand, but I wish they'd tell us the differences between game modes. The walkthrough, for those of you who don't know how a BradyGAMES MGS guide works, is written based on the "Normal" difficulty setting.
The walkthrough is where you get the biggest mix. I can't figure out if the author thought the people playing the game were retarded or not. In one spot the text even reads "Switch to First Person View, hold down the A button to raise the SOCOM Pistol.." as if we don't know the A Button fires a weapon (and if you don't know that, you're playing the wrong game). The walkthrough is also sluggish, especially in the beginning. It picks up, perhaps a little too much. The boss strategies are not all that helpful for example, they don't mention that when fighting the M1 Tank or Metal Gear REX, you can use Chaff Grenades to jam the radar.
The walkthrough did have its good points though. The maps are VERY detailed and pin-point out items. They also show guard patrol routes, although some are confusing (way too many arrows on some pages, the way they did the guard route in the MGS2 and MGS3 guide was much better). The screenshots were clear enough, and they did lead you through each area OK.
However, I'd say the biggest problem with this guide is simple. Who would need it? Especially if you played through the original MGS on the PSX? The changes made to the game are so minimal (and they did a bit of tweaking to the game, such as for Psycho Mantis to do EVERYTHING he did on the PSX version you have to play on EXTREME) that you should already know everything about it.
It's also sad that for all the secrets you have to go fishing through the walkthrough. I was also disappointed that, as usual, BradyGAMES wouldn't get to the point. They take time to explain every cutscene to you. For the love of God, I'm playing the game, and watching the cutscene, why does the guide have to explain it to me? Does the author really think I'm that dense that I can't watch a simple cutscene?
They did have a dog tags list, and they did have a list for all the spirits. Sadly, they didn't bother to explain game rankings, and they even ruin the ending for those who have yet to play through MGS for the first time.
My advice is this, unless you collect strategy guides, leave this one on the shelf. The game, for one thing, is so simple to figure out that you really shouldn't need it. Also, if you've already played the original on PSX, you'd be wasting your money by buying it anyway. Leave this one on the shelf, unless you're a collector of strategy guides or MGS accessories.

4.5 Great Job although a few unmentioned things.......2003-07-21
I have the PS2 version of this guide and since I've been out collecting guides lately, I decided to pick this one up. Amazingly enough (or not really) this guide is about the same as the PS2 guide. Well, the Walkthrough part for the original SOL is. The only bonus you get is the fact that this is XBOX (and if you get the PS2 MGS2: Substance, this is a better buy than that substance guide. Just remember that the controls are different).
Anyway, the biggest bonus is all those VR missions and Snake tails. Basically all the bonus stuff in MGS2: Substance. The guide is worth the grab for all that.
However, all the problems with the PS2 guide still remain. They don't go into any detail about the different difficulty levels in the guide. They tell you all the basic stuff but don't help you prepare for the next difficulty level. For example, the EXTREME difficulty level has several new additions that aren't in NROMAL mode that the guide simply won't detail, like when you must destroy more sensors at the Shell 1-2 Connecting Bridge.
The nice dog tag strategies are nice but my cheap trick to getting them still works fine. Wanna hear it? It's so simple and easy to do that I'll tell you right now! Once you get your hands on that coolant spray, get some easy dog tags by always putting a guard to sleep. Then walk to him and spray him until he wakes up. When he wakes up get behind him and have your gun pointing out BEFORE he comes to a stance. Do this and you'll shout FREEZE as soon as he's back on his feet. Pretty easy huh? Simple.
Anyway, enough about secrets as this isn't a place to submit tips for the game. Anyway, this is a good guide to get and if you buy the PS2 version of MGS2: Substance I'd recommend you get this guide rather than the PS2 guide...which overall will force you buy two guides (and all together you're paying the price of two guides! Meaning you'll have to buy the original MGS2: SOL guide and then the Substance guide for PS2 spending thirty dollars when you didn't have to).

Customer Reviews:
somewhat acquired taste..........2007-07-14
First off, whoever wrote the review below this needs to research their comic artists or at least read the credits in the beginning of comics. Ashley Wood is a guy and Arthur Suydam only does the COVERS for all the Marvel Zombie shiz, NOT the inside art for anything.
Anways, Ashley Wood's art in general is somewhat of an acquired taste, it used to almost bug me with the chaoticness of his paintings and drawings, but it certainly fits the mood for most of the source material. He's recreated the brilliant "sketchy" art that was seen in MGS for the original Playstation system. It may seem jagged and little odd but trust me, their are much much much worst artists than this awesome dude. Its refreshing seeing comics finished in a completely different style from the normal "mmkay im going to draw it in pencil, then you are gonna do pen & inks over it, and then some other guy is gonna color it..." *snore*
Id probably start from the first game's graphic novel also done by Ashley Wood and Alex Garner because it might not make a whole lot of sense at times if you're just getting into the series. Great art, great game-to-comics adaptation, extremely faithful to the source.
Id recommend HellSpawn: The Ashley Wood Collection TPB for people that havent seen much of Mr.Wood's style.
Stick to Marvel.......2007-06-21
First of all, the art. I'm sure Ashley Wood spent the check she/he got before realizing "Oh [...]! I got 5 days to turn in a complete book!". They might as well have used ink blots set to words. That's how the art looks. I know that MGS has a lot of sketchy art, but she just takes it to a whole new, ugly, level. Most, if not all, the art looks like rushed figure drawings done in charcoal. By the 40th page, I had enough. I was confused and my eyes were bleeding. After a while of collecting dust I had the decency to turn to the final pages and saw some of the extra art work she/he possibly turned in to get the job. It was good. Well, some of it.
As for the story, I never finished it. My advice, go pick up "Marvel Zombies". It has a great story, a few laughs, and AWESOME art by Suydam.
Don't buy this if you buy comics or graphic novels for the art. Spend your money on the Street Fighter comics. Trust me, it's worth it.
Final thoughts. Ashley Wood, years of figure drawing classes gone to waste.
