5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-09-29

The core rule book set is a nice addition for any D&D gamer. They are nice books and the box holder is a nice addition. It keeps the books together so you can grab them quickly. I would suggest this pack for those of you who want to start gaming or need new books. The price was reasonable and we would recommend them to others happily.

The books are colorful and the paper highquality. These books last through years and years of reference and play. They are must have for all gamers.

The book came on time and in good condidtion.
My son was thrilled with the books and could not wait for them to come. The minute they showed up he disappeared into his room and didn't come out for hours.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic game for a fantastic price.......2007-08-24

D&D is a fantastic game, and for this price, it would have been a sin to miss. This three book was design to be definitely enough if you do not want to be invest more into the game -- magnificent tips to the dungeon masters to desing your own monsters, magic items, adventures and worlds, tons of spells, weapons and everything you can imagine. I can hardly put them aside.

5 out of 5 stars D&D Core Rulebook Review.......2007-08-24

These books were purchased for my son who is 17 and just got into D&D. He actually asked for only the first book. When realizing there were other core books and the great price on the 3 book set, I had to get it for him. He was thrilled receiving extra books and had indicated that this is a great started set for persons new to D&D as well as experienced players.

1 out of 5 stars This product is being outdated.......2007-08-20

The company that produces this game, Wizards of the Coast, has announced that it will be releasing the 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons in May 2008. This means that 3.5 products will be become out-of-print and will be very hard to come by shortly. If you want to play a game that no longer receives product support, that is fine; but otherwise, I would recommend against investing in this product.

Instead, I would recommend one of two choices: you can either wait until 4th edition D&D comes out, or you can try out a different RPG instead. Wizards of the Coast's RPG games tend to be very complex and highly action-oriented, which makes them lack in simplicity and roleplaying values. If you want a detailed game of hack n slash, I'm sure that D&D 4e will be the game for you; however, if you place more emphasis on storylines and RP immersion, you may find it difficult to maintain them while keeping track of the millions of little rules scattered amongst the numerous rulebooks. You will also find little support for such a playstyle, since Wizards of the Coast's books focus more on stats and options, but less on plot elements.

The reason I gave this product 1 star is because I am more interested in storytelling and portraying a role in a fantasy setting, two things that are more difficult in Wizards of the Coast's D&D game. I also rated it lower because it is soon to be made "obsolete" by a new version of the game. I prefer a game that does not "update" every few years, invalidating all the purchases you made for the previous version since they are no longer compatible.

Now, onto the products that I do recommend. Castles & Crusades is a simpler game that is much easier on my style of gaming. The simpler rules make things a lot easier and more fun for Game Masters; prep work for the game is not nearly as burdensome as it is for D&D. C&C also has greater support for adventures and settings, instead of releasing endless supplements of even more rules. The game has been described as having a feel more like the earlier editions of Dungeons and Dragons, before Wizards of the Coast acquired the D&D license. Moreover, the C&C system is flexible enough to allow easy conversion of material from any of the editions of D&D: players of Castles & Crusades often make use of D&D 1st, 2nd, and 3rd edition material in their games.

Besides D&D and C&C, there are many other roleplaying games that you can choose from. Before jumping in, I recommend scouting around and seeing what game is right for you. Otherwise, you may end up wasting your money on a game you can't enjoy.

2 out of 5 stars Good test prep, but otherwise sparse content.......2007-09-20

Reading these books, I find them to be good resources for preparing for the exams, but I know that they will not become the trusted dog-eared references that I would have hoped them to be. Useful content is sparse; a lot of text seems to be wrapped up in the presentation of the material and it leaves it a little verbose. Furthermore, the books are badly edited and I find myself distracted by the flagrant mistakes that one can find every couple of pages. The mistakes do not seem to be so bad, however, that one cannot easily discover the error and compensate; they are also seldom technical in origin, though the (more often) grammatical mistakes or the (occasional) omitted negation *could* lead one to misconstrue the meaning of a particular passage.

I have been exceptionally upset on the occasion when I discovered an obvious case of text pasted from another section of the book that had not been properly modified for the new context, and so, badly referred to the old context. This is just careless.

Aside from this, the material is otherwise very clear and very simply put.

5 out of 5 stars Great books for step by step learning........2007-07-29

I found these books very helpful. Most of the topics are very well explained and are related to the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of information for DBAs.......2007-09-11

I purchased this for the 70-431 training, and since it was a good deal for the remaining two books, I got this package. Thsi was not a weekend study guide for me, but a two week adventure. The book is a good read, especially with the authors' real world experience. I have used the information in my consulting practice, and it has paid dividends. With this book and other resources included, I scored 940 on the 70-431 test.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfatory..........2007-08-18

The kit provides the necessary tools to prepare for the exam. I'm a little disappointed with some of the rudimentary database topics covered (for example - T-SQL, Creating Tables). Someone preparing to be a certified DBA would already know most of this basic material. If they don't - it's a little late to start learning. However that seems to be status quo with most training kits out on the market.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing more to add.......2007-07-27

Superb tri-pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 DBAs. It is almost you have to know to provide serious MS SQL server 2005 administration and maintenance.

5 out of 5 stars Good Resource & Study Book.......2007-07-20

This book is very good in the fact that it steps you through real world examples. The examples in this book can be used for the real world work place.

Some of the many examples from the ground up are Clustering, Database Mirroring, Log Shipping and much more.

It helped me so much for the Exam 70-443.

Good stuff!

3 out of 5 stars MCITP.......2007-07-18

The book lack illustration and examples. From a point of view it does prepared you for the exams, however, there is nothing new in compared to others programs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book - great detail.......2007-02-23

This book does a great job at explaining each concept it covers. I started the book with many misconceptions of disconnected data and other ADO.NET items. The book has many great code examples that are kept short and to the point. I definitely recommend this book to my team and anyone else wanting a stronger understanding of how to effectively use ADO.NET. Some of the performance tips it provides will suprise you.

5 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air.......2007-01-07

I normally buy Wrox books and up until .NET I was very happy with them, but their .NET books (ASP.NET 2.0 and VB.NET particularly) were poorly organized with massive numbers of errors in them. I wanted an ADO.NET book but the customer reviews of the Wrox title were poor so I kept looking and found this book that has much better reviews. I'd not bought a Microsoft Press book recently because I didn't like the last one I tried so this was an act of faith for me.

I have to say, thought, that this book is an order of magnitude better than the recent Wrox books I have bought. I don't know if the single author approach simply results in a better book or if the particular author (David Sceppa) can take the credit. Either way, I think Wrox needs to stop publishing books with multiple authors.

The problem with ADO.NET is that everything is intermingled and it's hard to discuss, say, DataSets without mentioning DataTables or DataAdapters. David (or someone) say down and very carefully figured out the sequence to explain stuff with the minimum of forward referencing. This means there are only a few unresolved references I have to hold in my brain at a time for which I am very grateful. On the down-side, this means there is some repetition as he discusses the same class relationship from different perspectives in different chapters. At first I found this annoying until I realized that this was actually making my life as the reader much easier.

I have yet to find a single error and the sample code in particalar seems to be error free which is in stark contrast to the Wrox .NET books. The samples themselves are compact and clean and writen in both VB and C# which is a handy way for a VB programmer like me to learn a little C# on the cheap. I certainly never found myself thinking 'The purpose of this sample is to add 10 unncecessary pages to this book' unlike other books *cough*XML Bible*cough*.

I'm only about one third of the way through right now but I am very impressed.

I really hope someone from Wrox reads this because I'd like the old Wrox back that published great technical books.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb.......2006-10-06

I am a huge ADO.NET nut and David's first book was absolutely priceless. After his last book, he set a very high bar that was going to be hard to meet, yet that's exactly what he did.

Pros:

- He discusses every facet of the ADO.NET library and does it well
- He doesn't shy away from difficult topics and in particular, goes straight at them in his Advanced Update section
- Excellent flow
- Won't leave you hanging if you don't know the 1.x framework but doesn't bog itself down in it either.
- Stellar writing style. David is interesting and always keeps you wanting to read more. He's concise, to the point yet does both without ever leaving you wanting for more.

CONS
-Calling this a con is probably a bit unfair but if there's one thing I didn't like was the coverage to TableAdapters. This has nothing to do with Sceppa's coverage and everything to do with the objects themselves. Since I never use them I have a bias against them. With that said, I doubt you could do a Core Reference without covering them so this doesn't really count.

The specific areas that this book really does a great job in is Transactions, Advanced Updates and client side data manipulation. Items like the syntax for DataTable.Select are covered in such stellar detail there's probably no situation that you will be unprepared for. Transactions are another complex area and this section alone makes the book worth its price. Advanced updates are a must in any ADO.NET book and history repeated itself here.

Pure Gold plain and simple.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not as good as his former book.......2006-10-04

I was just a tad bit disappointed because his former book was so helpful to me because he was showing examples exactly in a manner in which I needed them. This book is still very helpful, don't get me wrong.

Those who develop WinForm apps and who use Access will find it less helpful than his other books because he works mostly with SQL whereas before he was dealing a lot with OLE. (Mostly they have the same commands, however, it is a mistake to assume everyone uses SQL Server. Not every programmer is a web developer, some develop WinForms. I like SQL Server, but in most small apps for what I do it is highly unnecessary.

Also, some of the new features in ADO.NET such as the TableAdapter is really for beginners, and it uses tons of memory. But heh, that is just my opinion.

Still I like David Sceppa, in fact he is probably the best when it comes to ADO.NET

5 out of 5 stars Accessing a Database from the .NET Environment.......2006-09-30

This book is intended for people writing data access code in a Microsoft .NET application. ADO (Active Data Object) .NET is a set of libraries within the Microsoft .NET framework that helps you to communicate with various data sources from .NET applications.

The newest version of ADO.NET which comes with Visual Studio 2005 is the first major release that does not introduce a new object model. This implies that the fundamental technology is reaching a point of stability in spite of several problems that users are requesting such as better support for XML.

Most of the illustrations in the book use the SQL Server Express Edition which is free, and redistributable. As such, it is helpful if you have at least a bit of knowledge about programming in SQL. The more work you can get done in SQL, the faster your application will run. I would recommend the purchase of an additional book on T-SQL, the specific version of the SQL language used with SQL Server. This book is more concerned with connecting to your database with a program that you might write.

2 out of 5 stars Wrong Version - Wrong Examples.......2007-08-03

I am displeased with the fact that there was not indication that this series of books is tied to Visual Studio 2003. I am working with Visual Studio 2005 so none of the examples match the version I am working with.

2 out of 5 stars The Truth About This Book.......2007-06-06

Ok here is the honest truth about this book. The biggest thing wrong with it is the title. The title suggest that after reading this book you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the exam. NO WAY!! Not even close. The title should be "An Introduction to SQL Server" because it introduces alot of the concepts on a very non detailed high level fashion. I am taking a training class at this place called techskills and had it not been for them, i would have flunked the exam. Their practice questions are very very very similar to the real exam. When taking their practice questions i had to go to server books online to figure out the answers. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK AS A STUDY GUIDE FOR THE 70-229 EXAM!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Dont buy! Voucher is expired as of June 2004.......2007-05-10

One of the reasons I bought this expensive set of books for the discount. Later, I found out that voucher expired on 2004. I felt cheated.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for getting Certs.......2007-03-13

This is essential for preparing, but don't think that everything you need to know is in this book, be sure to check out some practice tests too. These books actually make decent reference books too if you are in a pinch. Note that these are not targeting the current Certification available for VS2005.

4 out of 5 stars Solid book on Java Enterprise architecture.......2007-09-03

It is a MUST-HAVE J2EE architect/developer book. It provides the most important and relevant patterns in J2EE design and development based on Gang of Four. The architecture guidance and best practices described are very valuable.

This book needs an update for Java EE 5. Not sure, those updates are posted on their web site.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for J2EE architects.......2007-01-04

I bought this book for preparing for SUn Certfied Enterprise Architect assignment( part II). I am very happy with this book. It gives examples for all J2EE patterns in a very lucid way and this book has helped me a lot.

5 out of 5 stars This is the most important and comprehensive J2EE design pattern book.......2007-01-03

Do you know GoF ? Do you know basic 14 design patterns ? Do you know Java ? Do you know J2EE ? Do you know EJB ? Are you an architect of Java based applications ? OK. But if you do not know the book Core J2EE Patterns you are not taking designing and implementation of J2EE applications seriously. The book describes all the details, consequences and other aspects of J2EE design patterns. I recommend to read book sequentially and to make a lot of bookmarks and lot of skips into related links in the book.
You get clear picture of overall architecture possibilities in J2EE world. Also thanks to this book I became a certified architect.

1 out of 5 stars It is outdated........2006-12-21

This was the bible I used for a project, I loved the ideas and I named the classes after the names in this book.

However, 3 years later, after reviewing this book, I would say, many ideas in the book are already outdated and over emphasized in the past. Just remember the good old days when EJB was glorious and almost every company went for it.

After the EJB rush, now when we are back to basic, we realized that many Plain Old Design Patterns are real gold. I would suggest you don't rely heavily on J2EE, focus on domain design instead.

Many books provide this advice on domain driven development, such as Design Patterns, Refactoring, Domain Driven Design.

After you read those books, then read this book again. You will agree with this review.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide for the professional and experienced J2EE developer.......2006-12-02

This book is about using patterns for the J2EE platform, using best practices to design applications that use JSP, Servlet, EJB components, and JMS technologies, preventing reinvention of the wheel when it comes to design and the J2EE platform, and finally identifying bad practices in existing designs and refactoring those designs. This book assumes the reader already knows how to program with J2EE technologies and is familiar with UML. Each pattern presented has a problem it addresses, forces involved (what you want to accomplish), and a solution. Also included are related patterns and even some sample code, though the code is by no means complete.

This book is organized into two parts. Part 1, "Patterns and J2EE" covers an introduction to J2EE and patterns. It deals with design considerations for JSP, servlets, and enterprise beans. This part also includes bad practices and refactorings for the J2EE platform.

Chapter 1: "Introduction" is a brief discussion on various topics, including patterns, J2EE platform, defining a pattern, and pattern categorization. It ends by introducing the J2EE Pattern Catalog.

Chapter 2: "Presentation Tier Design Considerations and Bad Practices" and Chapter 3 "Business Tier Design Considerations and Bad Practices" discuss the design considerations and bad practices for the presentation tier and business/integration tiers respectively. The design considerations are issues that a J2EE developer needs to consider while working with the J2EE platform. The topics presented in these chapters point the reader to other sources (such as official specifications and well written books on these topics) for more detailed information on these issues.

Chapter 4: "J2EE Refactorings" includes some of the refactorings the authors have experienced in their work that has enabled them to move designs from a less than optimal solution to a better solution. The refactorings provide another way to think about the material in the rest of the book, providing what the authors believe to be valuable companion material to the pattern catalog. This chapter shows how the authors have been influenced by Martin Fowler and his book "Refactoring". For those readers who are familiar with the Refactoring book, the format of this chapter will be very familiar. However, the content of this chapter is entirely in the context of J2EE technologies, whereas Martin Fowler addresses refactoring at a different level.

Part 2, "J2EE Pattern Catalog" presents the J2EE pattern catalog which contains the patterns that form the core of this book.

Chapter 5, "J2EE Patterns Overview" provides an overview of the J2EE pattern catalog. This chapter begins with a high level discussion of the pattern ideas and explains the way the patterns are categorized into tiers. It also explains the J2EE pattern template, which is used to present all patterns in this book. The chapter discusses all the J2EE patterns and uses a diagram to show their inter-relationships. It also provides a roadmap to the pattern catalog. This roadmap presents common J2EE design and architecture-related questions with references to patterns or refactorings that provide solutions to these questions. Understanding the pattern relationships and the roadmap is key to using these patterns.

Chapter 6, "Presentation Tier Patterns" presents eight patterns that pertain to using servlets, JSP, JavaBeans, and custom tags to design web-based applications for the J2EE platform. The patterns describe numerous implementation strategies, and address common problems such as request handling, application partitioning, and generating composite displays.

Chapter 7, "Business Tier Patterns" presents nine patterns that pertain to using EJB technology to design business components for the J2EE platform. The patterns in this chapter provide the best practices for using the EJB and JMS technologies. Where relevant, these patterns include discussion on other technologies, such as JNDI and JDBC.

Chapter 8, "Integration Tier Patterns" presents four patterns that pertain to integrating J2EE applications with the resource tier and external systems. The patterns deal with using JDBC and JMS to enable integration between business tier and resource tier components.

Finally, the "Web Worker Micro-Architecture" discusses an advanced topic of using multiple patterns to solve a larger problem. It specifically discusses the Web Worker micro-architecture which illustrates how to combine multiple patterns to integrate a J2EE application and a workflow system.

I found this book very enlightening, although I would not say it is an easy read, since this is not an easy subject. Some things have changed since it was published back in 2003, primarily the advent of EJB 3.0 which changes the need for and structure of a few patterns. However, it is still a very good book on design and I would still highly recommend it for the experienced J2EE developer. The book's preface recommends it for managers too, but quite frankly unless the manager is well-versed in J2EE to begin with, I think it would just confuse him/her since the discussions and explanations can get quite technical.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Book - Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-10-01

WAY TOO MUCH FLUFF. Buried in all of this filler text are obfuscated details of the language. There are no real examples that can be followed. I wish I could get a refund because I really feel like I wasted my money.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2007-01-17

Even though I haven't finished this book (not enough time in the year), it's a very well written book. Not too hard to read, but complete and covers a ton of information. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-11-11

Learning to program is a hands-on activity. The best teaching texts are those that provide example programs which the student can reproduce, tinker with, and observe, to learn the concepts illustrated thereby.

Unfortunately this book does not take that pedagogical approach. The textual descriptions are high-level, supplemented by abstract and simplified diagrams, as well as tables that list in exhaustive (and exhausting) detail the various classes, their methods, properties, &c. One looks in vain however for a good program to illustrate how an actual ASP.Net website might work (I gave up looking after Part I).

The author advises that this book should not be the first to be read on the subject of ASP.Net 2.0. Accordingly, I read a more basic text on the subject, which, through well-constructed sample programs, gave me a firm grasp of the basics and whetted my appetite to learn more advanced techniques I could use to build practical websites. I hoped this book would supply those techniques, but I was disappointed.

This book might be of use to a developer who already knows the essentials of ASP.Net 2.0, and needs a desk reference for use in day-to-day programming tasks. As a learning tool, it is about as useful as trying to learn a foreign language by reading a dictionary.

1 out of 5 stars Errors and omissions.......2006-07-27

The discussion on how to use the new SqlCacheDependency class is wrong. The book claimed (in page 623) that "with SQL Server 2005 no setup work is needed and no external objects must be added to the Database.". In reality, you need to setup several permissions in the database side. In addition, you have to make sure that the compatibility level of your database is set to 90.

The source code example in page 622 will not work. The reason is that the SqlCacheDependency object was created after the command was executed. SqlCacheDependency must be created and linked to the command object BEFORE executing the command.

Further, the book made no mention of the requirements of the SQL statement of the command to be linked to the SqlCacheDependencyObject (e.g. you cannot use *, and table names must be qualified with its owner). If you do not follow these SQL rules, caching using the SqlCacheDependency will not work.

I have not finished reading the book; I don't think I will have motivation to do that. I'm not very confident that what I'll be reading is accurate because of the above errors and omissions.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the cover.......2006-07-18

This book is an excellent introduction to the facilitites available in ASP.NET 2.0. It covers simple topics such as HTML controls, WebControls, page lifecycle etc, and also goes a little deeper to discuss details of providers, personalisation & master pages to name but a few. There are also several chapters devoted to displaying data using ADO.Net which are useful. There's also a good chapter on ASP.NET security. Most if not all of this information is available on the web, however having a single book that covers these topics is well worthwhile - it's a great book to have by your side when you are writing ASP.NET sites.

4 out of 5 stars Core Java 2 review.......2007-08-28

I found this book to be a fairly decent book to learn both Java and GUI programming with though some of the GUI code would not work for me. Even so, I like the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-14

This is probably the best book for beginners in Java. It is equally good for experienced programmers as a reference.

The book is written in clear and easy to understand language. There are tons of examples to explain the concepts. The book has good coverage of swing and UI programming.

4 out of 5 stars not so good for Java beginner.......2007-03-30

Before buying this book, I finished reading a book called Java, A beginner's guide (by Herbert Schildt). However, I found it kind of hard to understand Core Java2 Volume 1, because there are some terminologies/syntax used in the first a few chapters, and these terminologies/syntax are introduced in the later chapters, which made me feel hard. Also, I didn't come from C++ background, so the C++ notes in this book is not appropriate to me at all. I don't know any C++!

Book is in pristine condition BUT, didn't come with book code for the online Quia workbook.

2 out of 5 stars Ciao.......2006-03-22

Unfortunately the CD does not seem to follow the text. Presentations on the CD are very limited and do not provide good practice for students. The Berlitz CDs are much better.
The book is very expensive for a language text. In updating the text through sequential editions, the authors have added very little to the topic, but have changed the pagination sufficiently to make it necessary for students to buy the latest edition. Thus increasing the cost for students without any significant improvements in the material.
In some places there are vignettes in Italian with no translation provided. Since some of the expressions are not in the vocabulary, this makes it difficult to understand, for example "Informazioni", page 86 in the 5th edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good accompaniment for the textbook!.......2000-08-29

This lab manual is a great accompaniment for the textbook "Ciao"! I found that the exercises are very helpful. They emphasise the grammatical points made in the textbook very well. The only problem with it is that if you use it to teach yourself, and are not in a classroom situation, you can only do half of the exersises, as no tape or CD is included for the laboratory half of the book. I think it is still worth buying, inspite of this flaw!

5 out of 5 stars What a help!.......2000-06-01

This workbook as tremendously helpful in supplementing the work from the textbook and classroom exercises. It brought together all the activities and lessons as an additional reinforcement. I would definitely recommend purchasing this workbook/lab manual.
