Genius.......2007-09-22
This book is genius, I take it to all my modeling gigs.
And if you want a certain look and need help, this book's got tons.
awesome.......2007-06-13
amazing. all his books are. must haves!! great pics and descriptions of how to are easy to follow!
great makeup book.......2007-05-18
Being a makeup artist who tries to learn new methods for applying makeup, I enjoyed reading this book. I bought in fact two of Kevyn's books. I also had Bobbi's book and some other books, where they merely advertise their own products and tell you things that are known and basic. Kevyn's book had actual techniques and a variety of looks. Sometimes I think that the way an artist creates a look cannot really be explained, you have to be next to him when he is actually applying the makeup.. putting it in words and pictures is not always easy to do. Kevyn Aucoin is a pleasure to read and he is not only humble but definitely a great artist. I was saddened to read that he is no longer with us.
Makeup bible, ultimate how-to--BEST book on this topic!.......2007-05-18
Makeup bible, ultimate how-to, this book remains the Best book I have seen on the subject of working with color, proportion, shading, and highlighting to create a beautiful, symmetrical, gorgeous face. It is thorough and leaves no question unanswered.
The book begins with the basics: anatomy of the face, foundational ingredients (moisturizer, simple tools, foundation types, powders, concealers) and moves on to techniques. There is an Amazing diagram on shading and highlighting on pg 24 that shows an exaggerated version of what goes on beneath the makeup to create the illusion of symmetry and highlight (or fake) high cheekbones, a lovely chinline, and beautiful eyes. It also discusses brows, eyes, lashes, lips, and then moves onto overall styles and looks. The way he explains with the text and shows with a combination of drawings and pictures makes it clear for anyone, whether a professional or beginner. Excellent resource!
The looks themselves are extremely varied from subtle, minimal, and fresh, to smoky, sexy, and very dramatic. He begins with simple ideas on everyday people, but finishes off with celebrities looking like you have never seen them--you seriously have to find their names to figure out who they are, they look so different. These are examples of what different makeup can do, and for the theatre and fashion folks out there, this section provides you with so much inspiration and ideas--it is priceless!
There is something here for every person and every occasion, so even those who don't like looking overly made up can look great. His pictures of friends, family, and of course, celebrities give this book both warmth and glamour, and his clear way of breaking down various techniques make this the most accessible, user-friendly, useful book I have read on this topic. I recommend it to anyone at all.

Very informative.......2007-07-03
I ordered three face reading books to try to get as much information as I could. This book by far was the best. She adds a bunch of humor. This book is very well written and easy to read. I recommend this to all who are curious about what the face means. I am very pleased.
Useful and Insightful.......2005-12-10
After reading The Power of Face Reading, I am shocked by the response from "Almost Useless". In her book Rosetree asserts that we all have various challenges as well as styles with which we excell at, and I think Rosetree does an excellent job of expressing our different styles for work, spending money, communication, etc. with great compassion and depth. This is not a "too positive spin on every negative interpretation"; it's more a realistic way of looking at our strenghts and weaknesses.
I also firmly disagree with "Almost Useless"'s assertion that some of the interpretations are "just inaccurate." I have done many readings after reading the book, for friends and people that I've just met, and everyone remarks how surprisingly accurate they are! Rosetree also points out that the traits of our face reveal our propensity for a certain style of being. We are all human and can choose to behave in other ways as we choose. Knowing what are preferences are can help us use them with more strength, and to also gain understanding for the strengths and propensities of others. Brilliant for relationships!
In terms of "putting it all together" for doing face readings, I found this to be no problem. Like I said, I started doing readings for friends and new people I met right away. Rosetree also explicity states to set an intention to be of service, and begin with the features that strike you the most, and then notice what you notice next and go from there. This is what I've adhered to and what has made my readings so successful.
Lastly, I would be cautious with the review titled "Gems for Tabliod and Intellectuals." I might chuckle at these having not read the book. Rosetree's book provides much more depth than these quotes reveal. The book shows us that there are many ways to be in the world, and the beauty is that we can choose. I find it powerfully useful to know my style preferences at my very core.
The best of the best!.......2005-12-03
I know this book. I know this author. Rose Rosetree is a woman of the highest integrity and she is a great force. She's been on this path for many years, researching ancient studies and particularly refining the hidden traits found in faces. Each one of her books is a gift. But the wisdom contained in this one, The Power of Face Reading, showers the reader with clues and tips on discovering the very essence of, say, co-workers, first dates, celebrities, politicians -- any person with whom you might come face to face. For those with a sense of wonder and a hunger to know more, this is an easy read.
Amazing insights.......2005-12-02
I found this book, like all the ones I've read by Rose Rosetree, to be witty, insightful, and very useful. When reading this book, keep in mind that reading faces isn't just a formula, which is a point that Ms. Rosetree makes. The whole face needs to be considered, since it is a reflection of the soul as a whole. I use face reading often, and it's amazing how accurate it is. In addition to the companion book WRINKLES ARE GOD'S MAKEUP, I strongly suggest reading AURA READING THROUGH ALL YOUR SENSES. Combining aura reading with face reading is a very powerful tool and provides a far more complete picture.
Almost useless.......2005-05-02
The author tries so hard not to offend anybody, that she puts too positive spin on every possibly negative interpretation and overemphasizes what would already be considered as a positive one. Also, I found the most interpretations just inaccurate. Examples from nose chapter:
short nose - workaholic
long nose - talent for planning and strategy
straight nose - you work systematically
arched nose - creativity
...
Ok, of course you are supposed to interpret everything and put it all together, eliminating contradictions on the way, but the book falls short on instructions how to do that. There should be a chapter titled "putting it together" where the author should explain the process of face reading: what to look first? how to determine basic information about a person and go from there? Instead the book focuses on details without giving you the big picture.

another classic in women of color feminist theory.......2001-05-13
I have read & re-read essays in this volume over and over again. I think of this as among those texts that remind me there are those who went before me--and that the struggle for recognition is not over. Among the key texts here are Sandoval's essay on racism & feminism, a report based on a real conflict that took place in the NWSA and Alarcón's pathbreaking essay on Chicana subjectivity. But there are so many others as well...my main critique is that the anthology is not as representative as it could be with a leaning towards the "Santa Cruz circle"--and yet the truth of the matter is that there was an incredible grouping of women of color studying & writing there in the mid to late 1980s!

Just Basic Advice.......2004-01-02
This book is really for the true cosmetics novice. I enjoyed the lovely presentation, but this is truly an example of style over substance. In addition, I spoke with a male acquaintance of mine who stated that he was surprised by just how elementary this book's advice is. "Don't most girls learn that from their mothers?" he asked. I would say he is right! Rex shares very little of his knowledge. Only buy this at a greatly discounted price.
Beautiful Pictures, Great Advice.......2000-10-25
I love books that combine beautiful pictures and fashion artistry with common-sense application tips for those of us that might be just a little make-up impaired! I enjoyed Rex Hilverdink's approaches to make-up, I think he makes high fashion entirely accessible to the average, normal woman. And the pictures! Absolutely gorgeous. With tons of work for Vogue and other magazines under his belt, Hilverdink has much, much more to offer to women everywhere. This book is a great start, I enjoyed it immensely.

Essential to business.......2007-08-16
I found the basic business concepts in this book to be very valuable in understanding how a well organized business would run. I was able to select a couple of the tools described in the book and put them into application in my business, and they did work to improve the situations I was trying to change.
Great Book, Management Principles that Really Work.......2007-03-14
I've been using the principles I learned in this book and found that they are easy to get my staff to grasp and they really have made a difference in my operation. It's really a seminar in a book, very well illustrated in color throughout and can be easily digested at one sitting.
It begins with an approach to working out goals, and policy and doing strategic planning which you break down into simple steps for delegation and execution. You also align these things with the end results you are expecting and working out statistics to measure your progress. That's only the beginning - there are lots of really valuable tips. I highly recommend it and bought extra copies to give to my clients.
Sensible management techniques.......2003-10-14
My husband uses the management techniques in his business. They make a lot of sense and help him to put order into his daily work.
With lots of illustrations, the ideas presented in the book are easy to understand.
Highly workable system of business management.......2001-02-23
The information in this book is incrediable. It is very clearly written, and introduces you to a system of management that anyone can understand and apply. I have been able to take a one-person home-based business to a very successful 20-person business. The principles in this book enabled me to effectively organize my business so that I can get the maximum amount of production out of the minimum amount of resources. There are a lot of books and tapes avaialble on business know-how and management skills. A lot of it is interesting and it is easy to get lost in. What I liked about this book is that it introduces you to a system of administration and management that is nothing if not simple, immediately applicable, and soundly based on logic, common sense and evidently natural law. I highly recommend it to anyone.
Great Organizational Wisdom.......2000-07-25
I found this book to be a true gem of organizational wisdom. The book is filled with very clear illustrations that makes it an immediate useful tool for both business owner and employee. The basics of organization delivered in this book can be directly applied to any business or activity one is trying to organize. There is excellent tools on finance and solvency as well that makes this a well rounded text for any business owner. To anyone interested in starting a new activity or enhancing an existing one, or just getting a better understanding of how to organize and efficiently run a group, this is the book for you. You will learn to use and understand such incredible tools at 'The Scale of Administration', 'Management by Statistics' and contoling 'Developed Traffic'. 'Speaking from Experience' is a treasure chest of new perspectives on management for anyone to use. A definite key reference text for anyone's library that wants to succeed. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Six years ago the Preston Creative Living Centre, a small community agency in the diverse northern suburbs of Melbourne, embarked upon a risky but exciting venture. It marshalled resources for people to engage in artistic and community processes together and became a performance venue for a series of vital and engaging performances. Over this time the space has become alive, filled with people and activity. This book is about the partnerships between organisations, artists, and communities for community artmaking. It is the story of one organization’s experience with community performance-making, from the philosophy that informs choices, to the nitty-gritty of work.

Keeping It Wild.......2007-02-13
Black and Brown Faces in America's Wild Places is an excellent book to share with young people. It lets young people see people of color participating in actitivies and careers in the great outdoors. These actitivies and careers are open for all to enjoy. I purchased several books to share with the young people in my life and have received very positive feedback. One young man was very proud to share his book with his class for Black History Month.
Keeping It Wild
An important book for outdoor recreationists.......2006-11-03
Dudley Edmondson uses the personal comments and profiles of 20 black and brown Americans to make observations on the participation of minorities in outdoor pursuits. The "whiteness" of many of these activities is obvious. Without pointing fingers, the book makes clear the importance of drawing minority populations into activities such as birding, hiking, camping, etc. As the population of this country grows more diverse, as faces of color appear more often on city councils, county boards, and in legislative positions, an appreciation of the value of natural resources by these people will become important. As the saying goes, we protect what we understand and appreciate. Edmondson's book offers personal experiences and observations that make the point that the outdoors and its pleasures are for everyone. The book is illustrated with the author's excellent photographs. This is a book to be shared with anyone who enjoys outdoor activities.

Forensic archaeology has come into its own in recent years. The science has been making news in odd corners of the world for being used to identify the remains of long-lost Japanese soldiers on remote Pacific islands and for examining whether 19th-century American presidents might have met with foul play. In this accessible study, archaeologists John Prag and Richard Neave look into the world of "making faces"--reconstructing human forms from bits of bone, giving physical presence to the long-since dead. Among their subjects are King Midas of ancient Greek legend and the famous "bog man" of Lindow Moss, England.
Customer Reviews:
Don't expect a glossy, National Geographic look for this one..........2007-04-16
This book is a fascinating chronicle of the work of several major forensic reconstructionists from around the globe, and the major techniques they employ. The faces they are re-creating are those of men like Phillip II of Macedonia (Alexander the Great's father), King Midas, King Agamemnon, Egyptian mummies, and bog people. Seeing history coming to life under their masterful craft is deeply rewarding, though the pictures are not always of the highest quality. Some of the photos are grainy, and very few are in well-detailed color. Still, each photo captures something unique about the projects they are working on. A great deal of the book is given over to text describing the historical figures and then the forensic techniques. It's a wonderful selection for an astute student of history and reconstructions as a whole, and is a fresh look at forensic facial reconstruction (particularly 3-D) for those studying the field from a more law enforcement standpoint. As a University student in an anthropology program, as well as a forensic art class, I found this book to be a lovely merging of the two fields, bringing the past to life in a way that has only recently become possible.
fascinating.......2001-04-09
This book describes the author's techniques for reconstructing faces from skulls, both modern and ancient. the illustrations are wonderful, the text is very interesting. I would like to have seen a little more analysis of the weaknesses in the technique (mainly what author calls the "soft tissues," and possible approaches to increasing accuracy, or alternative versions of the same skull with soft tissue variations). this is a quibble, though.
A fascinating blend of art and science.......2000-12-02
The book provides an in-depth look at the collaborative work of John Prag, an archaeologist, and Richard Neave, a medical artist, whose dedication and rigorous methods have developed what has come to be know as the Manchester Method for facial reconstruction.
The book begins with a history of reconstruction methods to-date, with a brief look at how the skull was treated historically followed by a summary of more recent attempts to develop a systematic approach, mentioning a number of notable failures along the way. The second chapter is about techniques and the forensic evidence that they follow in order to achieve what in some cases are remarkable likenesses.
The next 11 chapters detail various projects they have tackled, including Egyptian mummies, an Etruscan lady, a Minoan priest and priestess and arguably the most significant, Philip II of Macedon, Alexander the Great's father. Each chapter goes into some depth about the historical background of the subject, the archaeology of the find and the specific, often daunting, challenges presented by the remains. These include often fragmented skulls, missing sections and even significant distortions caused by fire and other factors.
Although the book is aimed chiefly at the layman there is by necessity a fair amount of technical terminology - both medical and archeological - but this is not overdone. The notes at the back are extensive and are followed by recommendations for further reading referenced to each chapter; anyone interested in following up on any aspect of the various projects will have no shortage of material to seek out.
My main reservation is that it does tend to go perhaps into too great detail on side issues. It would also have benefited greatly from better editing and proofreading.
On the whole an interesting mix of historical mystery, drama, detective work and artistic insight.
PLEASE NOTE: the English edition (paperback only) is significantly cheaper from Amazon.co.uk (£7.99 currently - about $11.50!!), you would be well advised to order it from them.
Fun reading, with occasional frustrations.......1998-07-27
A book by two people who specialize in recreating faces of historical figures from their skulls. This book covers some of their best known reconstructions: Philip of Macedon (father of Alexander the Great), King Midas, and Lindow Man to name a few. Most of the discussion is great fun (especially re: Philip), but the authors occasionally get a bit tedious (most notably they repeat, over and over again, the injunction not to judge how a face while in the process of reconstruction).
