This deserves to be an Animated Movie........2007-09-20
I had already read this story before I got the compilation version. Thanos is by far one of the best villians I have ever read about. He appears to be a villian but from his point of view, he doesnt really see a good or bad in anything. The action is great and does make sense in the marvel universe. This story is meant for animation and would easily be on a higher level then the previous cartoon movies that have been released. The story of thanos getting the infinity gems is just as much fun as seeing him use them to mess with everyone including the cosmic beings.
Brilliant.......2007-08-08
The Cosmic Epic to end all cosmic epics!! Thanos trying to become god, universe spanning action, Adam Warlock leading Marvel's greatest characters... AWESOME!!! Starlin does a great job with all of these characters, and with a brilliant strategy to save the universe. In only 6 issues this story flows wonderfully toward it's conclusion. This will help people who've never thought about such things to wonder about the nature of god being omnipotent, and all-knowing, and the nature of time a lil bit too. Can't say enough about this book. Also, don't read this before you check out Silver Surfer:Rebirth of Thanos.
Brought back memories.......2007-07-21
I loved this series when I was younger and it first came out. What a great story line in the Marvel Universe. Buying the whole series in one book like this was a real treat. Thanos and the Infinite Gauntlet rock!
Fun Original Read.......2006-11-06
I enjoyed this piece as I'm a Thanos fan. The ending was great, with good reasoning...not one of those "you're forced to believe it" endings. I enjoyed the cast of characters, although there wasn't much devlopement shown except within the core characters. If you enjoy anything on the cover, you should really like this book. All in all I loved it.
Product Description
This new book focuses the institutional impediments to women's success in the practice of law--the challenges and roadblocks women face as they struggle to succeed in law firms. The book addresses all aspects of law firm life including firm management, the assignment process, billable hour demands, business generation, compensation, mentoring, attrition, and work/family issues. It also sets forth recommendations for change, describing concrete actions which law firms can implement in order to enable women to take their rightful place as equals in the legal profession. The book is the result of two years of research and is based on the authors interviews with hundreds of women lawyers and law firm managers from all over the country. The author also draws extensively on a wide range of research across multiple disciplines in order to shed further light on the areas covered. Although the book is about women in law firms, the issues raised could apply to any professional setting.
Customer Reviews:
Why many women lawyers still hit the glass ceiling.......2006-10-11
In her thoroughly researched and heavily footnoted book, Lauren Stiller Rikleen examines this troublesome issue: why many female lawyers still have not achieved the same professional success as their male counterparts. Rikleen delves into the challenging topics including part-time work, and what happens to the careers of women who opt for that route. She also explains other factors that contribute to the success of male lawyers' careers (being mentored, and becoming rainmakers) and discuses why many women don't enjoy the benefit of those.
Rikleen, who is well versed in the advancement of women lawyers, concludes her book with a call to action. She argues that law firms need to make a dramatic culture shift from the top down; firms should choose management which understands and values the contributions of women attorneys (not just those who fit the traditional, full-time mold). Rikleen also hopes that law firm compensation will change to reward cooperative client development efforts, among other things.
Towards the end of the book Rikleen notes that it's not just childbearing female lawyers who seek a more manageable work/life balance; Generation X and Y lawyers of both sexes are also seeking the same. She encourages law firm leaders to redefine their firms' cultures (as happened at her firm) in order to keep their talented lawyers, both male and female.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.......2006-10-02
Having survived three years in a law firm (and survive was the key word), I could definitly relate to the stories in this book. The only shocking part is that I was in a law firm over 10 years ago, and nothing seems to have changed. Ending the Gauntlet, however, is more than a compendium of stories of women being mommy-tracked. It looks at the structure of a law firm itself and how that contributes to the workplace issues for everyone, not just women. I particularly loved the Prologue (worth the price of the book itself, especially if you have my warped sense of humor), because it describes how a bizarre sort of company is run where performance for all employees is based solely on money they personally earn for the company; the managing director/CEO is only "part-time" because he too has to earn money to keep his title; turnover is high; management is minimal or nonexistent; and people are given management positions because they are "least objectionable" to others; part-time is extended but discouraged as it cuts into billable hours ... and you finally start to realize that while the rest of the world has moved foward, law firms are relics of days gone by
Kudos for the Roadmap for Change.......2006-08-18
Here is a great articulation of the problems in law firms and other service firms, many of which no one, until now, has had the courage to point out clearly and effectively. And here is the roadmap for change. Anyone involved in a service firm should read it carefully and follow Lauren's lead.
A must for every woman in the legal profession .......2006-05-27
Ending the Gauntlet was a powerful read -- it provides a very practical and realistic view of law firm culture for women and what needs to change. I could not put it down.
As a former corporate executive who now consults with law firms on sales and leadership effectiveness, Ending the Gauntlet provides the roadmap for change -- at both the individual level for women and at the firm level.
Law Firms Take Note: Change Is Long Overdue.......2006-05-11
A good, hard look at today's law firms, Ending the Gauntlet: Removing the Barriers to Women's Success in the Law tackles tough issues comprehensively and fairly. Lots to recommend about this book, but particularly helpful for those who care about law firm profitability are the practical recommendations Lauren Stiller Rikleen makes in the second part of the book.
My work is with women, however, and I found the discussion of gender stereotypes and how they impact women to be consistent with my research and observations. Rikleen is right -- most of the time, behaviors that hold women back aren't motivated by bad intentions, merely cluelessness. Yet these behaviors hurt women and, consequently, the legal profession. Rikleen offers a blueprint for law firms who want to get better; the smart ones will follow it.
Book Description
On 3 October 1953, five young men, armed with four pistols, crossed the border from Czechoslovakia into East Germany. Their mission was to deliver an explosive secret message from a Czechoslovak general to U.S. authorities at all costs. The journey was to take three days. Their ultimate objective was to join the U.S. Army Special Forces, then return to liberate their country. What ensued was the largest manhunt of the Cold War.
This fast-paced book tells the exciting story of their plight as thousands of East German and Soviet troops chased them across swampland, forests, and fields for thirty-one days. After surviving several pitched gun battles, gunshot wounds, starvation, and the bitter cold, three finally reached West Berlin. Prior to their escape, they had formed the nucleus of an anti-Communist resistance group, inspired by the testament of celebrated World War II resistance leader, Czech general Josef Masin, father to two of the young men and grandfather to the author of this book.
As she was growing up, Barbara Masin heard parts of this story. Eager to learn more, she began to investigate. The result of her efforts is this thriller, which makes use of eyewitness interviews and extensive archival research in four countries. Her book places events in their historical context and analyzes the bitter present-day controversy surrounding the group's actions, examining the larger question of individuals making moral choices. It is a dramatic tale of courage and daring against overwhelming odds and a testament to American ideals of freedom.

Proud to be a Masin.......2007-08-21
Wonderful gripping book! I couldn't put it down! So much history and so much strength in the Masin brothers and their group! I am proud to be a Masin (no close relation known). great job on the book!
DeAnn Masin
Interesting perspective.......2007-01-07
Despite her personal connection to the protagonists of the history, the author provides what seems to be a fairly unbiased accounting of events. Her closing notes regarding the impact in the politics and society of today's Czech Republic I found especially interesting. The book should be of interest to anyone looking at the particular events themselves or even more generally in the impact of the communist period on today's Republic.
An inspirational tale of courage, daring, and absolute commitment to ideals of freedom........2006-12-09
Gauntlet is the true story of five dedicated anti-Communist young men whose epic journey and struggle in the 1950's could have altered the course of the Cold War in Europe. Though grounded heavily in historical testimony and evidence, Gauntlet reads like a novel, as it follows the group's fugitive attempt to deliver a message from a Czechoslovak general to U.S. authorities. An inspirational tale of courage, daring, and absolute commitment to ideals of freedom.
Audacity of Youth.......2006-11-12
I could hardly put this book down. A loyal Czech father with a secret message throws down the gauntlet to his sons and they react with breathtaking action. This is a true story of incredibly daring young men who wre chased by the Communist Russian and East German Armies across East Germany. This book is based on five years of research by the daughter of one of the living survivors.
The Greatest Cold War Story Ever Told.......2006-09-23
The Naval Institute Press in Annapolis, Maryland published a dazzling, accomplished book by Barbara Masin called Gauntlet. I was surprised by the title, as I had previously read the older, differently named, version of the manuscript supplied to me by the author. When I hear the word Gauntlet, the Clint Eastwood movie of the same name always pops into my mind specifically the final scene of an old and rugged Clint running the gauntlet (or driving in his case) through the streets of Phoenix, being shot at from all sides, with high hopes and sense of duty, only to arrive on the steps of city hall to find a conclusion that he did not really like. Then it struck me - the finely crafted story told to us by Barbara Masin is in many facets and angles very similar, but very real and with an added epic weight.
It is a story of five young men, brothers Ctirad and Josef Masin (who is to become Barbara Masin's own father), Milan Paumer, Vaclav Sveda and Zbynek Janata, who in October 1953 fled communist Czechoslovakia on foot and shot their way through equally communist East Germany to West Berlin. It was the culmination and grand finale of their anti-Communist resistance activities, going in the footsteps of their legendary father and their families - and that it where the "gauntlet" comes into play. East German StaSi and VoPo mobilized over twenty thousand soldiers and policemen to capture the five young men.
They eventually captured two out of the five and promptly gave them to Czech commies to be executed, with many other relatives - but the Masin brothers and Milan Paumer (with a gunshot wound in the stomach) finished their run of the gauntlet to West Berlin. The book is a gripping thriller that would make Robert Ludlum proud - with one big distinction: this was not fantasy, this was a real life story and even those unfamiliar with the harsh realities of Eastern Europe in the dark ages of the Cold war will be sucked into the action. The realism of the story is chilling and makes it next to impossible to put the book down.
The Masin family was far from ordinary and the book follows the story of several generations in the family. Josef Masin, the father (1896-1942), was a soldier, hero of both world wars, member of Czechoslovak Legions in WWI, which fought their way across Russia and Siberia to the Pacific Ocean and was a member of the underground resistance against the Nazis. His sons, Ctirad (b. 1930), Josef (b. 1932) and daughter Zdena (b. 1933) were the next generation. Their mother, Zdena Masinova, although she did not know about her sons activites and escape plans, was sentenced to 25 years of prison and died in prison soon afterwards in horrific conditions. Their uncle Ctibor Novak was executed together with Vaclav Sveda and Zbynek Janata. Multiple friends and relatives were also executed or imprisoned - even if they knew nothing about the Masin brothers' group's anti-Communist activities.
The Masin brothers still have not set foot back in their native land. Today the Czech Republic is still only marginally free and allegedly democratic, but the majority of its population, after more than fifty years of constant brainwashing, has quite a ridiculous attitude about their own history and the role they themselves played in it. The Masin brothers and Milan Paumer are repeatedly nominated for the highest of Czech awards, only to be rejected by the communist-dominated Czech government. Yet other Czech politicians are afraid to take a clear stance in this case. Poorly educated, brainwashed for multiple generations and generally fearful, the population of today's Czech Republic seems to lack the guts needed to push the issue through. Nevertheless, the Masins and Paumer are held in high regard by the community of Czechs and former-Czechs living abroad, who in contrast to the inhabitants of the Czech and Slovak Republics, are familiar with the experience of fleeing to the West at the risk of one's life, and seem to be Masin's admirers: in 2005, the Czech and Slovak Association of Canada gave the Thomas Masaryk Award to the Masin brothers and Milan Paumer.
The Masin brothers and Milan Paumer were heroes. In this context heroes are individuals, who by example of their own bravery are able to inspire the masses. And inspire they did. Close to 1 million former Czechs and Slovaks now happily live abroad.
Czechoslovakia is from the historic point of view quite an unfortunate country - it was a truly free country for only twenty years (1918-1938) of their 1500 or so year history. By becoming Americans, the Masins and Paumer found - not that they planned it that way - the end of their rainbow. Czechoslovakia probably was not destined to be free, then or now - so those of us - inspired by the Masins - those of us who had freedom embedded in our DNA just had to go and become Americans. Which isn't bad at all, considering where we came from and what most of us have been through.
The Czech translation of the original manuscript was published in the Czech Republic about a year ago under the name "Odkaz". Since then, an additional seven months of research was added to the book for its English edition. It is a fast read and sure to delight anybody from history buffs and thriller aficionados right down to elderly cancelled Czechs who want their English-speaking children and grandchildren to read about their ancestors old country which never came to be free. It serves as a fine introduction for those unfamiliar with the history of that sad part of the world. A must for every library. This intense and amazing story is, without doubt, the greatest Cold war story ever told.
Thank you, Joe, Ray and Milan. And thank you all, who died on the way here. You all were and are our heroes and inspiration.

Book Description
"Marines ain't supposed to sit. We're supposed to kill."
After the resource-rich planet Diamunde is seized by the armed forces of industrialist Marston St. Cyr, the Confederation Marines face their most desperate battles yet against the mechanized forces of the bloody usurper. Promised a walkover by military planners, instead the Marines must run a gauntlet of steel, with weaponry three hundred years out of date.
For the Confederation's invasion army to seize the planet, the Marine FISTs first have to secure a planethead against St. Cyr's much larger forces which are equipped with superior weapons. Together with their outgunned comrades, the Marines of 34th FIST must do the impossible--or die . . .
Customer Reviews:
Good escapist fare.......2007-09-09
One thing I like about this series is how each book is different from the others. The portrayals of military life are good, and the foibles of the high brass are well played out. Good sense of humor where needed.
Books are rather gorey, so not for the faint of heart.
But lots of fun. Good for a quick weekend read.
SNAFU.......2005-08-06
I enjoyed the first two installments of the Starfist series. They were not my very favorites but they did keep my attention. I guess that's why I'm a bit disappointed with this installment. It seemed a "situation normal" type of read. It was a fair story and kept my attention but did not do so to the degree that the earlier two did. Since there are many more left to go in the series, there is still hope.
In this story, the 34th FIST is deployed as part of a larger force in a full scale war against a planet led by a maniacal sadist who has reinvented the doctrine of armored warfare. These jarheads are going to fight tanks, something they have not trained to do in several centuries. The marines are to make an opposed landing, establish a "planethead" and hold for relief by the army. The overall commander is a political admiral who has a talent for making bad choices. A major bad choice is the site of the landing. Things just get worse when the army fails to reinforce the marines on schedule. That's bad enough but, when corrupt politicians get their oars in the water, things really go to hell. As I said to begin with, Situation Normal, All Fouled Up or SNAFU.
I still plan on reading the rest of the series but it is not as high on my priority list as it was.
Great Series, Mediocre Entry........2004-06-23
As much as I like the Starfist Series, Steel Gauntlet is probably the worse book in the series, for the reason mentioned by nzjohn in his review. After Sherman and Cragg go to great lengths to prove that MBTs are obsolete, their villain has to make an elementary mistake (one that the very research into military history that led him to build tanks in the first place would almost certainly have prevented) to keep the "useless" panzers from wiping out our heroes. Feels like the authors got two-thirds of the way through the story and then realized that they'd screwed up. Read through this one quickly.
34th FIST Marine, always an entertainment.......2002-05-31
34th FIST Marine have a real challenge with the armor division from Diamunde. They are in competition against a force that is superior to them and are going in a the tip of the sword with old weapon. Amazing and riveting as the storyline goes. It might be a bit slow to start but once started, it gets hot.
Toyful wha.....?????.......2002-05-13
Trouble is brewing(isn't it always) a rouge general general has resected a force rarly seen on the battlefield of the 25th century..tanks. Dean Claypole, George Bass and the rest of the 34th FIST are called in to help. This is not a particularly good book, but it is fun to read great on a plane or trian reading.

Good graphics, Terrible Game Play.......2006-04-02
If you loved the older Gauntlet games, you'll HATE this one.
If you miss something on a level, you can not go back and replay the level once it is done. There are only limited upgrades to armor and weapons. You can only see what level your character is once you complete a level. You can only purchase attack combinations (and only a few at that) with your gold. We were able to complete the game in 4.5 hours. For $50 I expect a lot more game play.
A message to true gamers: DO NOT BUY

Good story, good art........2007-06-11
This story takes place right before the first Robin (Richard Grayson) starts working steadily with the Batman. It gives us a good insight on his thought process and we can see some of his innocence when going through the test.
I like the art, which conveys the story very well visually and it had a good ending that shows hope for the future.
I would reccommend this story to all fans of Robin and Nightwing, since he was the original Robin.
mediocre.......2004-03-16
Over the years, Batman is one of the few comics that I've stayed interested in (and the only DC), but I really didn't think Gauntlet was that great. It's Robin's right of passage, but the storyline is only mediocre. And even the art isn't that great. But I still like Batman.
Graduation Day.......2000-11-16
After going through Batman's rigorous training, Dick Grayson, the first Robin, is ready to partner Batman in the fight to eradicate crime in Gotham City. But in order to do so, he has to pass his final test: to elude Batman from sunset till sunrise. Things take a turn for the worse when Robin unknowingly stumbles onto something which may cost him his life. Now Batman must race against time to find Robin before it is too late. This is one of the best stories I have ever read. If my memory is right, this is the first Bat book I bought (by the way, I am not a Batman fan). Definitely worth buying.

A Wonderful Read!.......2004-03-02
This one is certainly a page turner. Not only did I get into the characters of the book, but they left a lasting impression on me as well. This book was very well written, and the author uses his imagination well.
Mr. Lowe will take you into a world a fantasy where a young girl finds herself in another world, a world different then her own. While in this new world she meets creatures that in her world would be make believe to her. She will also find herself having to fight the Dragon King. In her adventures she will face fears and battles that will change her life forever.
I had this book sitting on my coffee table ready to read to give the author my review, but before I could pick it up my fiancee' decided it looked interesting to him. My fiancee' then picked up the book and began reading it. Needless to say, he did not put the book down until he finished it that evening. He too loved the book!

Loved it!.......2002-10-28
Enter the world of the Pix where magic is divided into three categories, or spheres: Wicca, Fae, and Black magic. It is a world where souls can be merged into weapons to give them incredible magical qualities. And it is one of these weapons: The Griffin's Gauntlet, which must be used to free the Pix from the tyrannical rule of the Dragon King. I really enjoyed this book's storyline. It is compelling and shaped beautifully through fantasy and imagination. The characters and backdrop were described in a creative fashion. The attention to detail and vivid imagery of the people and places really added to the feel of the epic. Definitely recommended to the fantasy fan.
Incredible imaginative fantasy!.......2002-09-14
Sharon Amber is whisked away and abandoned in a world where a tyrant has cast a horrible curse on the populace to suppress rebellion. Only Sharon, who is immune to the effects of magic, good or bad, can aid in lifting the curse and bring about the downfall of Bain, the Dragon King. I liked this author's writing style. The story flowed and transitioned from chapter to chapter and was especially captivating when new characters and places were introduced. And I loved the unique way its exceptional characters and fantastic events fit together. An astonishing amount of imagination must have been used to write a book like this. This is an incredible fantasy that kept getting better and better as the story went on.
A Good Read........2002-08-29
The Griffin's Gauntlet has a bit of everything to those who enjoy a good read: A fantasy world, creative use of characters and places, bloodshed, and a memorable female lead character.
A Word From the Author!.......2002-08-26
This story is about a young woman who finds herself swept away into another world inhabited by witches, pixies, and magic weapons in which she is the only hope for that realm's freedom from tyranny. The protagonist, Sharon Amber, finds that she is immune to any magical effects of the world she finds herself in. She, therefore, becomes the primary candidate to help the people of the Pix become free from the tyrannical rule of the Bain, the Dragon King. First, she must quest for the weapon known as the Griffin's Gauntlet, then, she must use it to vanquish the tyrant. The story delves deep into the minds and motivations of some of the main characters and presents a positive message of responsibility and commitment that goes with coming to age.
