Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Virginia Lee Burton has added her own irrepressible humor in pictures and design to the tale children have loved for centuries. The Emperor, his court, and clothes -- or lack of them -- are ridiculous as only Hans Christian Andersen can make them. The whole is a delightful concoction.

5 out of 5 stars Helped my son to read.......2002-01-20

I had been given 2 of these books from a friend and I decided to see if there were anymore. My son loves this book. He's now working on reading the adult side. It's a great idea to have a page each, 1 for the adult and 1 for the child. We have several of these books now and I see my son sitting down and reading them on his own.

4 out of 5 stars A delightful gem.......2000-04-05

Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.

Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.

The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.

Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.

If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Way To Read With Your Child.......1999-09-30

The format of this book and the others like them give a young reader a very enjoyable experience. The adult side helps to embellish the story but the children's side lets a new reader be part of the story not just a listener. Our first grader takes great pride in his part of the book and seems to have better comprehension. These are a great find.

3 out of 5 stars Over rated. Too wordy and advanced for children under 15........1998-12-11

The book is nicely illustrated and the book quality is good. However, it is too advanced for children. It is over-rated I suspect due to the voices of the celebrities that are on the CD. Many pages are actually quite depressing and negative. I like more upbeat books even if there is a moral to be taught.

5 out of 5 stars I really was pleased with it, and so was my little sister........1998-01-20

I read this book to my little sister, she is 9 and thought it was the funnist book she had ever heared of. She really liked the part were the emporer.... well I won't give the ending away. But, I hope you enjoy it.

this is a very sweet story that depicts the Parable of the vineyard from Matthew (20:1-6) in a way that is easily related to by children. My son (4 1/2 years old) was delighted to read the bible version and connect the two stories. It helped him to understand the parable.

Hans Christian Andersen's beloved, wise, and humorous tale about the emperor who cares more about his appearance than about truthfulness is retold here by award-winning illustrator Demi. A weaver and tailor arrive at the palace one day, promising to make the most beautiful, soft clothes the Emperor has ever seen. Furthermore, these clothes are magic--only clever people can see them. The silly, vain Emperor is soon marching about almost buck-naked (except for some magnificent royal boxer shorts and an undershirt). Will anyone risk being dubbed a fool, and call the Emperor's bluff?

This spectacular version of the story, set in ancient, provincial China, is minimal in text, but overflowing--literally--with exquisite artwork. Several of the pages fold out to 3- or 4-page spreads, lavishly decorated with metallic gold, deep, flat red, and delicate, pale green. Closer examination reveals some comical touches--mainly in the expressions of the sly "magical" tailor and weaver, and the befuddled, blustering Emperor. The people of the province manage to maintain their composure for the most part, but it's clear they're ready to burst into laughter. This truly splendid rendering deserves a place in anyone's fairy-tale collection. Demi's many other original and traditional picture books include The Empty Pot and Kites: Magic Wishes that Fly Up to the Sky. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

    Book Description

Long ago in a province in China there lived an emperor whose greatest pleasure in life was to dress in new clothes.

So begins Demi's retelling of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale about a proud emperor who does not see what is obvious until he hears the truth from a child.

Based upon several different translations of the original Danish story, Demi's tale is set in old provincial China. Filled with exquisite details, bright panoramas, and golden hues that leap off a wealth of fold-out pages, this story lures readers into a magical place and time. The story follows the four seasons of the year and is packed with visual elements of Chinese culture for readers to pore over for hours.

Demi has captured in text and paintings all the majesty of China and all the magic that makes for the very best fairy tales. This elegant edition of a favorite story is sure to be cherished by all.

1 out of 5 stars Why is a swastika in this book?.......2006-04-25

I have always been a fan of Demi, so I am doubly puzzled by her inclusion of a Swastika as a symbol for happiness in this beautifully illustrated book. What could the author have been thinking? I would love it if anyone could explain to me why it was included. The book is lovely in its illustrations and the story is ok (my son and I were puzzled as to whether the Emperor really did realize who the fools were in his province), but due to its offensive inclusion of a Swastika, I can't recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2005-12-22

My 6 year old loves this book! We first found it at the library and my child kept checking the book out so frequently that we bought it for her for Christmas. It's very hard to find locally.

5 out of 5 stars Good version, beautifully illustrated.......2003-05-03

As a mother of a 28-month-old, I often feel that children's fairy tales should only be read by adults because such stories tend to be filled with objectionable levels of text and illustrations reflecting sexist, heterosexist, racist, violent and outright scary themes. (Despite Bettleheim's views on the uses of enchantment for children, I don't always agree that such content is useful or even benign for contemporary young children given the realities of today's American culture and media.) In order to familiarize our son for an upcoming children's musical theater production of The Emperor's New Clothes, I have been searching for the least objectionable of such books. I found 2 other versions that were barely passable but this one, by Demi, is not just passable but actually good. The illustrations are classic Demi (i.e. stunningly beautiful), including some fold-out 3 and 4 page panoramas. The text is straightforward, appropriately simple and clear but not wordy. This combination of stunning pictures and clear text make it a great read-aloud for toddlers and pre-schoolers and a beautiful book for adults to enjoy. The story is well-told with all the key plot elements included but without offending social-political sensitivies. Though I recognize that monarchies were just as objectionable in ancient China as they were in the Western world, the Chinese setting did help to make the story more palatable for my pro-democracy mind and it is nice to have a setting with exposure to a different culture as the incidental backdrop instead of being the obvious focus. I would highly recommend this book even if you don't have a particular event requiring a version of this classic tale.

    4 out of 5 stars A Chinese-style version of the classic tale........2000-06-03

Demi retells Hans Christian Anderson's tale of "The Emperor's New Clothes" with Chinese-style illustrations. Always a pleasure, her artwork in this book- bold compositions with bright colors and lots of "gold leaf"- is similar to that in many of her other books, such as "Kites: Magic Wishes That Fly in the Sky." Her use of Chinese symbols and imagery here is not as relevant here as it is in her "Kites" book; it merely provides a new twist to an old tale. The book has several fold-out spreads, which kids enjoy, but these are not integral to the story as they are in her magnificent book, "One Grain of Rice: A Mathmatical Folktale." The ending of Demi's version of this fairy tale is not quite satisfactory: we do not see the emperor embarrassed by his situation. Instead he obstinatly marches on, seeming without shame or remorse. In short, "The Emperor's New Clothes" is not Demi's best or most original work, but it is an attractive new version of a favorite story.

Translated by the noted Victorian Orientalist, Sir Richard F. Burton, from the original Sanskrit, these ancient Indian folk tales influenced such later works as 1001 Arabian Nights and Boccaccio's Decameron. First published in 1870, these stories will entertain and delight modern readers while illuminating the life and customs of classical India.

      Book Description

Princess Smartypants has always preferred her royal pets to a pesky prince, but when she decides it would be lovely to have a baby, nothing can stand in her way!
Sure enough, a twist of fate brings her just what she has been hoping for, but she soon realizes babies can be an awful lot of trouble. Perhaps Princess Smartypants wasn't cut out for motherhood after all-but fortunately she knows just who is. . . .
Publishers Weekly wrote of the first Princess Smartypants, "Truly comical watercolors in softly glowing colors complement this fairy tale parody perfectly . . . an appealing book for budding feminists."
This is a hilarious royal romp, packed with action and drama, from master storyteller Babette Cole.

2 out of 5 stars I really thought I would love this book, but..........2007-09-22

Okay first off I have to say that I did LOVE the first Princess Smarty Pants. I even liked the story told in this one. My problem is this. I am a mother of an almost two year old who is multi racial. When I read this book it stuck me that the baby that PSP makes is brown. I had to ask myself why? The baby causes tons of trouble until PSP gets two dragons to help her take care of it. I bought it for my daughter's 2nd birthday, though she won't be getting it so soon. I have decided to save it for a few years until she is old enough to talk about and critically think about the imagery of a white woman needing dragons to held her take care of a little brown baby.

5 out of 5 stars Princess Smartypants Does Rule!.......2007-02-23

Treat your daughter to a book which teaches her that autonomy and self-sufficiency is okay and that you don't have to get married to be happy. This story is about a girl who does not want to follow the norm.

5 out of 5 stars Princess Smarty Pants Rules.......2007-02-05

Princess Smarty Pants Rules is my kind of book, utterly delightful with wonderful illustrations. Children of all ages and parents and grand parents will thoroughly enjoy this and the other Smarty Pants books. I love them all and so will you. Go on treat yourself and have as much fun as I did reading this to my grand children.

5 out of 5 stars Another delightful story from Babette Cole.......2005-08-09

This is a continuation of the original Princess Smartypants which was delightful in itself. Now Princess Smartypants decides she'd like to have a baby of her own. It tells of her adventures with the baby and some creative solutions to the challenges it brings.

      Book Description

Dino Buzzati's classic tale chronicles the terrible winter that sent the starving bears down into the valley in search of food, as well as their struggles with an army of wild boars, a wily professor who may or may not be a magician, snarling Marmoset the Cat, and, worse still, treachery within their own ranks. Over all this, the bears triumph with bravery, ingenuity, humility, and high spirits.

      Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What is this book's audience?.......2006-03-08

Violent, cynical, on occasion frankly bewildering... The plot of the book is that the bears come down from the mountains to invade; most of them die, and the ones who survive are corrupted by the evil ways of humans.

For what could bears do, armed with arrows and spears and such trifles
Against culverin, cannon and grapeshot, and muskets and rifles?
      The rifles crack, the unsullied snow turns red;
Who'll dig a grave to hold so many dead?

The Duke upon a sheltered slope
      Observes it through a telescope
While the courtiers, to show how victorious their team is
Have painted his lens with a bear "in extremis"
So wherever he looks as the bloodshed increases
He sees only bears cut into pieces.
"Tell me, Your Excellence, what do you see?"
"A bear with his leg chopped off at the knee."
"And now, Your Excellence, what see you there?"
      "Nothing but dead bears everywhere."
      ...

      Now begins a hurly bur-
Ly, shrieks and yells and /Sauve qui peut!/
One runs away, one leaps the ramparts
And falls into the ditch's damp parts.

On the whole, I found it precious and depressing, but that's how I feel about the Lemony Snicket books too. Maybe if I was a little boy, I'd get a kick out of it.

      3 out of 5 stars Profoundly disappointing.......2005-10-18

I purchased this book for my son, based largely on other reviews, and great expectations for a series from the New York Review of Books. I'm writing this review, in large part, to temper those expectations for other potential readers.

I won't review the story here, as an overview has been provided in both the editorial review and reviews by otehr writers.

I found the writing very stilted and awkward, moving back and forth from a play-like (theatrical) presentation to third person narrative, and indipersed with bad poetry; not engaging child-like poetry (like Dr. Seuss, e.g.) just bad poetry.

There were too many characters for a young child to keep straight and follow through the story, and few well developed. There was not enough action to engage a yound child. Yes, there are lessons taught, and morals learned in the reading, but, it is not an entertaining read...it felt more like something you might trudge through as required reading.

I look for great books for my children, not wanting them to waste their time on drivel. I would not describe this book as shallow or empty, just a difficult read, and not particularly entertaining. I wish I'd checked this one out of the library (instead of purchasing it), as I'm fairly certain that neither I nor my children will want to read it again.

5 out of 5 stars The Bears' Invasion of Sicily.......2005-03-03

One terrible winter, King Leander leads his troop of bears down the mountains of Sicily in search of food. Along their jouney, the bears encounter an army of wild boars, a wily professor who may or may not be a magician, ghosts, snarling Marmoset the Cat, and, worst of all, treachery within their own ranks. Can King Leander and his troop of bears endure this treacherous adventure? It is for you to find out.

4 out of 5 stars Political Fable and Children's Story.......2004-07-30

Dino Buzzati's THE BEARS' FAMOUS INVASION OF SICILY has the appearance of a children's book with a much more subversive political message at heart. The book starts with the author's charming illustrations and brief character descriptions- of the Bear Marzipan, the Bear Dandelion, the Bear Merlin, Marmoset the Cat and others. This introduction of the major players and their driving character traits has a theatrical almost overture-like effect of setting the stage for the action that follows.

The plot reads as a magical-realist, forgotten history lesson of Sicily and the long wars and strife between bears and humans. The overriding themes of the book involve the corruption of humans and the real moral risk faced by the bears when they begin to adopt the airs and aspirations of their human counterparts. Few children's books deal with war or politics and none so inventively. It works beautifully for the child reader and adult reader alike. A mature young reader (for example a child who easily picked up on the allegory of the Narnia Chronicles) will discern much about human/bear nature and an adult with some exposure to history will read more into the sections on war and politics. In spite of basic premise (the ease with which power and decadence corrupt) it has a healthy dose of humor, magic and hope to balance the reality.

The New York Review of Books deserves high praise for bringing back the neglected classics for the enjoyment of both children and adults.

Do Clothes Really Make the Man?

King Discombobulated (Bob for short) has his priorities all mixed up. He loves new clothes more than anything in his kingdom. Yet his clothes are so silly that his royal subjects can hardly avoid laughing at their king. One day a pair of smooth-talking tailors shows up in town. They promise to make the king a suit of magical cloth that can only be seen by the pure of heart. The king is thrilled! But when he parades through town wearing nothing but his magic threads, will anyone have the courage to tell the king the naked truth?

Dom DeLuise retells a children's classic with wit and humor, then follows his story with a special surprise -- recipes fit for a king!

        5 out of 5 stars King Bob's New Clothes.......2007-06-23

Our children ranging in age from ages 9-5 laughed and laughed at this book! The illustrations are phenominal. The story is down to earth and funny. I am looking at buying all of Dom's books because this one is so enjoyable- with a moral at the end. A delight for children and adults!

        4 out of 5 stars A story to delight.......1998-12-08
