Customer Reviews:
Tom's field test proves to be a load of bull.......2007-04-07
In this galvanizing addition to the "Ghosthunters" series, Tom has to identify and capture an unclassified ghost as the final step to being awarded his GhostHunting Diploma. Everybody, including Tom, thinks that this is a mere formality, because as we all know, he has already defeated ghosts in Category Six, and the field test requires capturing a mere Category Three specimen.
The thing is, there's a new guy on the Examining Board, and he's changed the rules a bit, so that the apparently routine task becomes just a little more challenging. Tom is only allowed one assistant for the assignment, and that means that he has to choose between Hetty Hyssop and Hugo the Averagely Spooky Ghost. Logistics demands that he choose the one with a driver's license, and of course the other isn't too pleased about it.
When they arrive at the old village of Bogpool, they find it buzzing with ghostly energy, and soon learn that the village is a veritable ghost-magnet, and that the ghosts there don't much care for Ghost Hunters of any sort. The particular ghost required for the assignment turns out to be a rather unpleasant NEPGA (which we are told is a Negative Projection of a Ghostly Apparition), which would have been all well and good if it hadn't let on that it was really the "Twelfth Messenger", and believe me, this sounds a lot nicer than it actually turns out to be.
It isn't long before the earth starts moving and the mud starts bubbling, and the intrepid team of Hyssop & Co (plus a new friend) find themselves fighting for their lives. Ghosts of all sorts herald the arrival of the terrible "Muddy Monster of Doom" and his dreaded sidekick the "Thirteenth Messenger", and this definitely seems like one assignment doomed for failure.
The final chapters will have you holding your breath, making this a truly breathtaking experience, and trust me, that's no bull.

This Book Will Get Your Boy To Read!.......2007-06-11
My 9-yr old son LOVES this book, as well as the other Cornelia Funke books in the Ghosthunter series. He read this book nonstop from start to finish in only one day, and he is not the type of child who will read just anything. If you have a son/grandson/nephew who is a picky or reluctant reader, chances are good that this book will be one he will enjoy.
Too short.......2007-02-04
I like the Ghosthunter series. This book was too short though. I liked how they eliminated the ghost. You should get this book!

2nd Graders Can't Get Enough!.......2007-02-01
My class of 22 second graders is totally CRAZY for this series. Here are their ratings: Freaky! Cool! Hugo is sooooo funny in this book! Very exciting! Totally wicked! Surprising! Interesting! It's our favorite book so far!
Beware of Baronesses and biting ghosties.......2007-01-17
The third part of the series
And a new Ghosthunter book
The saga of the Baroness
Is worth a second look
It's off to Gloomsburg Castle
To meet some folk named Worm
Another tough assignment
For Hetty and her firm
To try to catch the Baroness
They turn off all the power
Because without her energy
She'll wither like a flower
The plan backfires terribly
And she still gets her juice
Astride her horse she draws a sword
And then all hell breaks loose
The Baroness had met her fate
By falling in the moat
The only chance they have to win
Lies hidden 'neath her coat
Action packed and funny too
This is the best so far
So look for more Ghosthunters
If you're into the bizarre

I just turned 8. The Ghosthunter books are my favorite. This book is about an old ghost that uses power to grow strong. Hugh is the ASG averagely spooky ghost and is very funny in this book. I take turns reading this book with my mom and dad. Even my little brothers like to listen to the stories. I can't wait for the next book!

Book Description
After banishing the Incredibly Revolting Ghost of book 1, Tom, former klutz, Hugo, still an Averagely Spooky Ghost (ASG to the uninitiated), and Hetty Hyssop, current world-renowned ghosthunter, have formed an agency dedicated to dealing with difficult apparitions. No case can defeat them--until they encounter a Gruesome Invincible Lightning Ghost. This smoking specter has claimed the penthouse suite of a beachfront hotel, where it passes its eternal vacation by turning guests into ghosts themselves. Could Hugo's slime douse the flaming phantom? Or are Tom and the team about to get burned?

An Invincible Lightning Ghost.......2007-06-01
Ghosthunters And The Gruesome Invincible Lightning Ghost is the second book in the series. In the first book, the ghosthunters got their ghost - an Incredibly Revolting Ghost. Now Tom (a 9 year old boy), Hetty (a world famous ghost hunter), and Hugo (an Average Spooky Ghost) must face a new ghost.
The story starts when the ghosthunter crew sets out to help Mr. Alvin Bigshot at his isolated Seaside Resort on what they think is a simple and easy task to chase away a bothersome ghost. In an identical plot twist as the first time around, the ghosthunters go after one particular ghost and find there is something more dangerous to go after instead and you can probably guess that it's the Gruesome Invincible Lightning Ghost in the story's title.
For those who haven't read Roald Dahl's BFG, please do to see where Cornelia Funk got the ideas for IRGs and ASGs etc. Dahl's is a story of Giants and Funke's is a story of Ghosts. Dahl does a much better job at storytelling than Funke, and that's the crux of the problem. As with the first one, this one's weak on plot and not always believable. Unlike the first one though Funke less on the "idea" of ghosts and haunted houses being scary and more on real msytery/mystique. There are even a few genuinely scary moments (for young readers).
Although the plot is weak, young readers interested in witches and ghosts should enjoy the story. It is a fairly good beginner chapter book for ages 7 to 9 and given a choice between the Junie B. Jones books and the Magic Treehouse books (which are also for ages 7 to 9 and also don't have much plot), this book is more fun.
This was a pretty good book.......2007-01-29
I like the Ghosthunters series but this book was ok. The part when they put out the Invincible Lightning ghost was kind of dumb. This book is not scary. I like the first one better.
Ryan: age 9
Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside.......2007-01-15
They captured first an IRG
(More dangerous than most)
Now Hetty Hyssop and her crew
Must tackle a new ghost
They go to a seaside hotel
(The staff are agitated)
And find the manager's report
Was badly understated
Equipped to fight a fire ghost
They find something much stronger
They use the tools they have on hand
(I won't go on much longer)
The moral of this Funke-y tale
Is simple and sublime
"Never underestimate
A well placed gob of slime"

My 7-year-old son loved this book. He could not wait to start it immediately following the first book(Ghosthunters and the Incredibly Revolting Ghost). We both loved how Cornelia Funke has created a whole new vocabulary for this world naming all the different kinds of ghosts and how to try to be protected from them and neutralize them. We both can't wait for the next one!

I think this book is really cool because there are lots of ghosts. One ghost is called a Gilig. I love the part when Hugo spits on the Gilig to defeat it
Book Description
Sir Simon Marsden is the kind of man you'd want around a campfire—his deep and resonant voice conveys the perfect combination of gallantry and intrigue that makes a good ghost story get under your skin. And what ghost stories he has! In pursuit of his lifelong passion, he has traversed the globe capturing images of the supernatural in his signature, atmosphere-charged photographs. His latest work documents fifty haunted sites in France, from the burial place of Paris's finest in the Père Lachaise cemetery, to the Sun King's Château de Versailles, and from the eerie abbey of the Mont St. Michel to the châteaux that dot the harsh landscape of the Pyrenees. France is rich in lore surrounding the Knights Templar, and Marsden has featured their stories prominently in this collection of indelible images.
Each mysterious site has a tale behind it that is brought to life not only by Marsden's spectacular photography but also by his narrative that is worthy of a suspense novel. The personal experiences of this spellbinding storyteller will inspire fellow ghosthunters and convince the staunchest skeptic to reconsider the supernatural world.

True Tales of Chicago's Famous Phantoms,
Haunted History, and Unsolved Mysteries
If you're from Chicago or like to visit here, you've probably been to some of these places. Or at least you've heard of them: The John Hancock Building. The Field Museum. Lake Michigan. Navy Pier. Wrigley Field. The Biograph Theater. Graceland Cemetery. They are some of Chicago's landmarks and famous places. They play an important role in our city's history and character. One more thing
they're haunted!
At least that's how it seems. Funny things, frightening things, and unexplainable things can be seen and heard in connection with many of the people, places, and events from Chicago's history. People like Resurrection Mary (she was real!), gangster John Dillinger, and Cubs announcer Harry Caray. Spooky places like cemeteries and not-so-scary places like the schools and beaches you may go to. Horrible historic events like the Fort Dearborn and St. Valentine's Day Massacres. It's no wonder that ghosthunter and author Ursula Bielski believes this is the most haunted city in America!
Read these nineteen tales and decide for yourself just how creepy Chicago is and whether or not your city is haunted by the people and events of its past.
For readers ages 8-12.
Customer Reviews:
A great teaching tool--and magic for kids!.......2006-11-13
Ursula Bielski has done some remarkable things for Chicago's young people since she penned her first book nearly ten years ago. In an era which finds the entire Chicago history curriculum reduced to a week of field trips and special projects, Ms. Bielski's books have been "luring" kids into learning about the city's history year 'round, by teaching that history through the "ghostlore" that surrounds some of Chicago's most important people, places, and events. This particular book retells some of the more gruesome tales for younger readers, leaving out a lot of the gorey details of the original stories. A word of caution, though: once your kids read this one, they will invariably seek out the others! Our school library has multiple copies of all of Ursula Bielski's books, and they are dog-eared, beat up, and utterly loved. Can't wait for the next one.
Great for Families to Read/Learn Local Legends Together.......2005-10-05
[...]Yes, Creepy Chicago culls stories from Bielski's first two books. It's a deliberate adaptation of her popular books for adults into a format for children--at the age at which most Chicagoland schoolkids learn Chicago history (3rd/4th grade). That could be why it didn't seem too, too creepy! That said, the book's writing and approach are sophisticated enough for older children--or even adults with limited time we're told!--to appreciate. Investigate first at your local library, and decide for yourself.
[...]
Not creepy at all.......2005-09-26
I was expecting a total new book to use in my classroom around Halloween. This one seems to reprint information from her first two books including some information on locations that is not correct. Has she actually been to any of those locations, I was misled.
If your looking for a book on folklore than this is for you, otherwise save your money if you have her first two books.
THE WINDY CITY'S RICH TRADITION OF GHOSTS.......2005-05-25
Chicago isn't the first place I think of when I think about hauntings, but as Ursula Bielski points out in her book, "Creepy Chicago", the windy city has a long and rich tradition of ghostly happenings dating back nearly two hundred years. Bielski's book relates dozens of stories of hauntings from the Chicago and surrounding areas. The earliest stories date back to the War of 1812 and Indians who attacked Fort Dearborn, killing the inhabitants and burning it to the ground. Even today, people still report seeing soldiers in period dress marching about the Michigan Ave. Bridge, the site of the former Fort Dearborn.
Archer Ave. is reported to be among the most haunted stretch of roadway in the country with numerous ghosts including the "Wailing Woman whose sobbing can be heard by those who passby the Archer Woods Cemetary. Then there is Chicago's most famous ghost, dubbed "Resurrection Mary" who made her first appearance in the 1930's. Mary is a beautiful blonde who would meet men in night clubs, dancing the night away with them, and then ask for a ride home. When the car approaches the cemetery, Mary jumps from the car and runs through the locked gates and disappears.
The Cemeteries of Chicago are replete with ghostly goings on...Rosehill Cemetery on the city's north side is said to be home to more than a dozen ghosts including several little girls. We all know how scary little girls can be! This cemetery is home to "Gerhardt Foreman" an associate of famed occultist Aleister Crowley, whose tomb is chained shut so he cannot get out. Rosehill is also the final resting place of Richard Sears, founder of the Sears Roebuck Co. who has been seen dressed in best in suit and top hat, walking through the mausoleum where he is entombed.
Not to be outdone in the ghost department is Bachelor's Grove Cemetery, a favorite destination for ghost hunters. This spot, reputed to be a spot where Chicago's gangsters dumped bodies is said to have spectral lights that chase visitors, mysterious 30's era cars that drive about, a woman in white who carries her baby, and a magical house that gets smaller and smaller as you near and eventually disappears completely.
One of the eeriest places to visit is Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside. In 1921 Julia Buccola died giving birth to her baby, and the infant died as well. Julia's mother had nightmares for several years and finally had her daughters grave exhumed. When it was opened, all were shocked to see that Julia was still perfectly preserved although the baby had decomposed. Now visitors will find a haunting photo of the perfectly preserved body on Julia's monument.
From Chicago's Field Museum, to the Ghost of Horace Greely who haunts the elementary school named after him and from the site of the infamous St. Valentine's Day Massacre to Wrigley Field where long-time broadcaster Harry Caray's ghost is said to haunt, this is a fascinating trip through Chicago's ghostly attractions. Unlike many regional tales of ghosts that are often rather dry reading Bielski relates these stories with a lot of enthusiasm that the readers will certainly share. I only wish there had been some photographs to accompany her text. Well done!

An Incredibly Revolting Ghost!.......2007-05-31
For those who haven't read Roald Dahl's BFG, please do to see where Cornelia Funk got the ideas for IRGs and ASGs etc. Dahl's is a story of Giants and Funke's is a story of Ghosts. Dahl does a much better job at storytelling than Funke, and that's the crux of the problem. I've read all the stories with my children and found them to be weak on plot and not always believable. The stories tend to rely heavily on the "idea" of ghosts and haunted houses being scary. There's not much of a plot.
Ghosthunters And The Incredibly Revolting Ghost is the first book in the series. 9 year old Tom has just discovered an Average Spooky Ghost in the cellar of his apartment building. Tom is a klutz and his behavior worries his parents. Tom's grandmother to the rescue she knows one of the best ghosthunters around so Tom can learn the tools of the ghosthunting trade to rid his cellar of the ASG. Tom later learns the ASG has been kicked out of his normal haunting grounds by an Incredibly Revolting Ghost and the ASG would really like to go back home.
Although the plot is weak, young readers should enjoy the story. It is a fairly good beginner chapter book for ages 7 to 9 and given a choice between the Junie B. Jones books and the Magic Treehouse books (which are also for ages 7 to 9 and also don't have much plot), this book certainly is more fun.
ASG vs. IRG.......2007-05-16
This review's title might not mean anything to you, so, for reference, an ASG is an Averagely Spooky Ghost, and, if you haven't guessed, the IRG is an Incredibly Revolting Ghost. As another book by the German author Cornelia Funke rolls off the presses, people might be lining up out the door, but this is an attempt at a book for younger people. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice book, but hardcore fantasy fans may not enjoy it as much as other books by Cornelia Funke.
If that paragraph didn't put you off this book, then happy reading! The book is about a boy who finds two ghosts in his cellar. Having discovered that, he teams up with a friend of his grandmother and an ASG (for those of you who don't remember, that's Averagely Spooky Ghost) to get rid of the IRG (Incredibly Revolting Ghost or Irreversably Ridiculous Ghost, it doesn't matter) forever.
Like I said before, if you are too old for an 150 page book, or if you think you wouldn't like it, or if you just outright hate fantasy (you poor, deprived child) this might not be the book for you. If I'm wrong, this is your book on a silver platter. No, wait, this would be your book on a diamond studded gold platter, with text to match. If you are craving a supernatural, short, not-very-articulate fantasy, this is the book for you.
Ghoshunters.......2007-04-10
My son has read several Cornelia Funke books and this is by far the worst. I can't imagine a series of books like this. It was very childish, it should be for kids around 5 years old and had a very weak plot, all of which is unlike the other Funke books I and my son have read.
Kids love it!.......2007-03-19
My daughters, ages 6 and a half and 5, absolutely loved this book. My younger daughter has never been able to sit long for read alouds without pictures (we've tried all the best...Dahl, EB White, the first Molly Moon, Ramona, you name it) but with this I think she could have gone nonstop cover to cover. We've just received the next two in the series and we're already almost finished with #2. I highly recommend this book.
Perfect not just for seasonal Halloween reading but for year-round enjoyment.......2007-02-04
An ASG - Averagely Spooky Ghost - is hanging out in Tom's cellar - it's afraid because it too is being haunted, by a bigger ghost. This ghost uses its head as a bowling ball... curious antics and zany events ensue as Tom tries to get to the bottom of unwanted ghosts in this hilarious tale, perfect not just for seasonal Halloween reading but for year-round enjoyment for elementary-level libraries catering to grades 3-5.

A Handy Traveller's Guide to Haunted Places.......1998-07-14
As with his two previous books (The Ghostly Gazeteer and The Ghostly Register), the intention of A Ghost Hunter's Guide is not meant to scare (though many of the tales are spooky) but to serve as a sort of Mobil Traveller's Guide to haunted places.
Unlike other books on the subject that are most often written by self proclaimed ghost hunters, psychics or parapsychologists, Arthur Myers is a seasoned reporter who admits to never having seen a ghost. He does, however, believe in the sincerity of the people he has interviewed and included in his book. He follows the leads, reports on what he finds and present the information in a manner that is useful to the reader.
The book is broken down alphabetically by state and each section provides such information as the haunt's location, how to get there, the history of the location, when to see the ghost and if the location is still haunted.
It's a fun and often interesting read. You may discover that the quiet, unassumi! ! ng building just down the street from your home may be haunted...

Book Description
Horrifying things are happening at Gloomsburg Castle. To begin with, the creepy place is crawling with Tiny Biting Ghosts (or “TIBIGs,” in official ghosthunter code). And now it appears as if the murderous spirit of a brutal Baroness has taken hold of the land-lady, infecting her with a killer case of hic–hic–hiccups!
Of course Hugo the Averagely Spooky Ghost is instantly smitten with Her Hideous Highness, only to find out that love stinks! And it smells something awful, too. Looks like the time has come for Tom to put an end to the “foul” play and concoct a plan that will dispel this decaying royal for good.
