In an untold story from the War of the Lance, the companions have saved the refugees of Pax Tharkas and led them to a hidden valley. For a time, they are safe, but the forces of the Dragon Army are in pursuit.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-09-10

I have been a Weis and Hickman fan for many years now. I was very excited to find out that these books finally got written to fill in all the missing pieces of stories spoke of in other books. First off I will agree with a few of the other reviewers. There are a handful of type-o's in this book. Missing quotes, misspelled words, missing words etc. HOWEVER, none of which are so bad that it makes the book not worth reading. I have found about 10 or 11. It could be worse, none the less, the book is still worth reading. I also have to disagree when people say the characters don't act like they did in other books. I think this is no where near correct. All of the characters are just like they were years ago when I first read of them. NOTE* This book has little to no character development it is NOT meant for that. It is a continuation of books previously written. If you are thinking of reading this and have not at the very least read Dragons of Autumn Twilight, hold of and read that first. Having said what I have, this is a great book and I highly recommend it, granted you read it in the correct order according to the other related books. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars a trulely great book.......2007-09-07

i just finished this book and i got so caught in the excitement that i couldent take my eyes off the pages anyway this book is mostly aboat refugees trying to escape the dragon highlord vermeneered or something i forgot how to spell his name as i was saying they are trying to escape from him with 800 slaves that he forced to mine and make weapons. the plot is, is for these refugee's to find thorbidden a city under the mountain named cloudseeker [a dwarven city]. they try to get the refugees of 800 males females and children into the safety of the city but as little as they know theres a war undergroun to find the sacred hammer of khares. tas raistlin sturm and tanis also flint [main charcters]. they try to agree with the dwarven thanes [rulers of thobidden] to let the refugee's in thorbidden.they find out that the sacred hammer of khares the one they have to get to get the refugees in thorbiddin is also the only one that can forge the dragonlance's [a magical sword]to defeat the dragons and draconins [half lizird half man beast's]. so now u got the main idea i hope u enjoy the series like i can :) :) :).

4 out of 5 stars Good read, but definitely a little off.......2007-06-07

Dragons of Dwarven Depths takes place in the period between Dragons of Autumn Twilight and Dragons of Winter Night.

Pros:
Like many have said, it's visiting with old friends
It is a well written book, as you would expect of Weis and Hickman
It's almost 600 pages, so you get your moneys worth!
Fills in some gaps in the original Chronicles trilogy

Cons:
For the first half of the book, the characters are written nearly exactly the same as they were in the original trilogy, however, in the second half, some, particularly Sturm and Caramon, seem different than the characters we know and love. While the characters do grow and change through the original trilogy in a fairly smooth manner, if you add this novel in, it would seem that they jump all over the place.

The story follows a similar path. While the first half seamlessly picks up right where it left off in Autumn Twilight, in the second half I found myself saying "That doesn't make sense" when I thought about the beginning of Winter Night. Without giving anything away (if you have read the original trilogy), the second half of the story deals with the companions acquiring the legendary Hammer of Kharas. In Winter Night, Sturm points out that they had recovered it, and the Dwarven essentially wouldn't agree to house the refugees without the companions turning it over. He's ticked, and Tanis isn't much happier about it. While that storyline is somewhat followed, the way it is written, it doesn't seem like any of the companions should be that upset that the Dwarves ended up with it. Also, it doesn't make sense why Elistan is then presenting it in the beginning of Winter Night.

By the end, I really felt like I was reading a novel written by one of the countless authors that have contributed to the series. Those authors tend to go off on their own tangents, or ignore various statements/facts presented in the original trilogies to make their stories work, which I find highly annoying.

That being said, it was still an enjoyable read, and far better than most of the non-Weis/Hickman novels in the series. I look forward to the second installment.

4 out of 5 stars You can never go Home again..........2007-05-06

Or so the old saying goes...The dynamic writing duo of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, proclaim otherwise, however, in their 'new' trilogy chronicling the 'lost'adventures of the Heroes of the Lance. Dragons of the Dwarven Depths is a great corollary off the original Chronicles storyline. The plot revolves around Flint's recovery of the Hammer of Kharas and Riverwind's evacuation of the Pax Tharkas slaves. Despite including the beloved Heroes, this book is really carried by the villians. The brilliant Draconian mage is exceptional in his role as primary villian in the story and I found myself reading on to see his reaction to certain situations despite the fact that I knew what the overall outcome was of the tale.
Weis and Hickman have done it again, they have created a great story populated with memorable characters!

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Back!.......2007-04-27

Another great story in the world of Dragonlance!

I was so sad at the end of the War of Souls trilogy, as I thought it meant the end of the world of Krynn for me... I was wrong, and I celebrated the day I found out that Margaret and Tracy were writing prequels. However, after the Star Wars debacle, I was slightly concerned that this was going to be a "Phantom Menace". I am glad to say it is not.

This book takes place between Autumn Twilight and Winters Night, and revolves around Riverwind's evacuation of the Slave of Pax Tharkas after the rebellion, and Tanis, Raistlin, Sturm Caramon, Flint, and Tas's search for the Hammer of Kharas - used to make the Dragonlances. This book focuses largely on Flint, which awesome considering that he played a much diminished role for the majority of the series. Flint leads the companions in the search and has to deal with the dwarven bureaucracy and xenophobia in Thorbardin. Compounding the difficulty is an especially clever and ambitious draconian who has fooled the world into thinking Lord Verminard still lives. I swear, fans of Tas will love this book - as always he has some of the best lines and gets himself into the strangest situations.

My only criticism, [which is not aimed at the authors] and one shared by many reviewers, is the abysmal editing. There were missing words, spelling errors, type-o's and so forth. While this does not detract from the well-conceived plot, it does slow the natural flow of the read. Hopefully the publishers will take an extra week for editing on the next instalment.

Anyhow, this was a great read for fans of the series!

5 out of 5 stars Great story but..........2007-09-26

I think this is a great series. I have to agree with a previous reviewer that takhisis came across as "here is power". I am looking forward to which side weis ends up putting mina. If she is for the light, then who will balance her out in the dark? If she is for the dark, then will they bring back paladine? After all, as it was stated previous, there must be a balance. I for one would love to have Takhisis back.:> none of the other evil gods of krynn came close to having her style.. and think of the poor chromatic dragons! all alone, no goddess.. no love.. its just not fair : <

4 out of 5 stars Good continuation in the series.......2007-08-30

Simply put, if you've read the War of Souls trilogy and/or Amber and Ashes (the first in this trilogy), you should most definitely be reading this one. Quality-wise I find the writing and the plot to be a little more simplistic compared to the behemoth that was the War of Souls (hence the 4 stars), but it's still quite worth the time and money to continue the saga of the Dragonlance world.

Other reviews have noted the influence of the gods in this trilogy - particularly this book - but if you read the first it explains that the meaning of "Age of Mortals" has changed with the return of the gods. It makes sense, when you think about it - there is a void in the top spot of the pantheon of gods, and thus a power struggle develops between the deities, and thus they turn to mortals to be the deciding factor because the gods cannot go to war with each other (if they do, Chaos returns).

4 out of 5 stars Great read, but a few problems.........2007-06-21

I would recomend reading this book. It's written well, and the story is very interesting and highly captivating.

I just don't really like how the gods are portrayed. I don't agree with the gods being so impulsive, and quick to emotion. It really doesn't make much sense....

5 out of 5 stars Confused..........2007-06-18

I thought both of the books were great and full of surprises. The only thing I'm confused about is the god Majere really Raistlin? If anyknows, please send an email at ihatebrandon_2@hotmail.com. Thank you.

Book Description

The War of Souls has ended, but Krynn is still rife with conflict. The elven
land of Silvanesti is no more, replaced by the minotaur colony of Ambeon.

A new emperor sits on the throne in Nethosak, his dark Protectors backed by the magic of the Forerunners. Resistance to the empire is all but crushed.

The rebellion's last hope, Faros, struggles with personal demons. But, unexpectedly bolstered by the very gods he has renounced, the legitimate heir rises up against obstacles all too real as well as others fantastical. A plague of abominations descends upon Faros’s forces as they storm the capital...forcing a memorable showdown with the evil usurpers.

The trilogy that began with dire events of NIGHT OF BLOOD and continued with the epic struggles in TIDES OF BLOOD now arrives at this thrilling conclusion.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Faros Shrugs and Kills Things.......2006-06-08

I said the second novel of this series was like a Big Mac. Well, sometimes when you eat too many Big Macs, bad things happen. I read the whole trilogy straight through, and by the time I got to this one, I was just bored out of my mind, I didn't care about the fighting save for the obvious Faros versus Emperor of the Evil Plague show off at the end, and seeing the High Priestess getting hers. Too many sword slashes and headbutts...too many Big Macs.

It is also, strangely, the worse plot line of the trilogy. The first is about treachery and bloodshed, the second about revenge and slavery, and this one...is about...well...wrapping up the trilogy really. Faros gets a fleet and heads to kill the Emperor, that's the plot. And while the first two weren't paragons of originality, they were just interesting enough to draw me in.

This novel was not interesting. By the hundredth page I just wanted it to end and get it over with. Maybe that's my fault for reading the three of them in about a week, but on the other side, Knaak has had trouble with wrapping things up before. Sometimes he goes fifty pages too many, or three or four fight scenes too many, and instead of a pleasant Big Mac sedation, you're left with a night listening to your stomach complain.

Part of this problem is drawn straight from the characters. The most interesting character dies rather early and we are left with Faros, whose meaning in life is simply to shrug and kill stuff, and Maritia, who I just can't care for. It's a modern fantasy cliché to throw in a female romantic subplot, and Knaak commits it. Her story is just wandering, pointless. She's there so Faros can look at her and say, "hey baby" and that's not enough. I'd rather they just cut the romance out completely if they are just going to tack it on.

All in all, I'm just disappointed with this one.

Final Thought: The worst of the three novels, but again, some of the better work in the post War of Souls stuff. Sad times.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Read.......2006-06-07

I have now read this series of books by Mr Knaak. I wont go into allot of detail about these 3 books. I will say tho if you want a good fanstasy read then by all means these 3 would be as good as any R.A Savatore,s Dark Elf series. I must say too that I have really enjoyed reading this Triology.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2006-03-04

These books keep getting better an better the more I read them. The Minotaur wars was an exciting and fantastic book of battles and lore. Couldn't put it down!!

**A book I would also recommend is The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. This, the first installment of The Morcyth Saga is a great beginning for a new author. Battles, magic, gods, secret passages and intrigue, all the elements of a classic epic fantasy! Any fantasy reader will enjoy it

4 out of 5 stars Conclusion that would make a Minotaur proud.......2005-08-24

Knaak begins the end of this impressive trilogy around the time the Gods of Krynn come back to the world (coinciding with the end of the third book, Dragons of a Vanished Moon, in the Dragonlance War of Souls trilogy). Empire of Blood is epic in scope. Sargonnas, original patron god of the minotaur race, and Morgion, currently holding sway over the minotaurs in his aspect as the Lord of the Bronze Tower, both play an active role in the story. Their respective mortal champions, Faros and Ardnor, command mighty armies and wield great divine power. At stake is the fate of the whole minotaur race and the overall balance of power for most of Krynn. It is a very entertaining read and fans of the first two books will not be left disappointed with either the plot or the quality of writing. I have a few gripes pertaining to Knaak devoting little time to flesh out certain parts of the story. Without giving away any major spoilers, Knaak seems to abandon Bastion, warrior brother of Ardnor, towards the end of the novel without ever telling the reader of Bastion's fate. The same can be said of another major character in Lord Golgren, leader of the ogres. There are a couple other settings and events that could've been clarified with more detail. In addition, Knaak's attempt at salvaging any romance in the series is downright pathetic. These are somewhat minor concerns, but added up, I did not feel this was one of Knaak's best novels. It is certainly enjoyable and up to the standards of most Dragonlance fans. Knaak did a solid job of setting the table for new future adventures in the ever advancing Dragonlance timeline.

5 out of 5 stars Great conclusion to this tale.......2005-08-20

With Empire of Blood, Richard Knaak concludes the Dragonlance: The Minotaur Wars trilogy and he does a fantastic job with putting everything together.

As with the other two novels in this trilogy they are a little darker than most Dragonlance novels, but in my opinion that is a good thing.

This book is much more action packed than the previous two in the trilogy which can be expected since it is the culmination of the trilogy. This story is well written and well plotted out to get the maximum effect of the tale.

As with the other books of this series you don't need to have a vast knowledge of the Dragonlance world to understand this trilogy. No matter what though, I recommend these book to any fantasy fan.

5 out of 5 stars One More Great Fantasy Book.......2007-07-19

Being the second one in the series, I had my doubts about this book.
The first opened so well with so many characters being introduced and being made interesting. This one did not disappoint. I read it in two days and the villain is one of the most evil I've seen. Sampson does a good job of handling a main hero that is a kender. I've read bad kender books (Kendermore) and this is not a worry.

One of the best points in the book is the underground maze and the main hero Tayt. SHe shone in this book as a spellflich and I cannot wait until the next read.

Overall, great second venture into the world of Dragonlance.

4 out of 5 stars Well met..........2007-04-07

Having never read a Dragonlance novel prior to this one, I was surprised at how quickly I fell in love with the characters and began wondering about their backgrounds. I was more familiar with the Forgotton Realms charcters, Drizzt and Elminster. I quickly overlooked these at the marvel of reading about a white dragonThe Great White Wyrm (Dragonlance: Champions, Vol. 3), but I wanted to get the scoop from the beginning of the series. So I started here in Solace, and I must say, it proves to be a satifying adventure. While the book wastes too much time speaking of Gerard's dislike of spiced potatoes, this can be overlooked as I'm sure Clark was simply trying to tie two series together with a familiar food item. I found Gerard's love interest a little underdeveloped (actually wondering why that part of the plot was included at all...), and some of his thought processes unexplained (e.g. How he came up with who murders who; some important dialogues are simply left out in place of more conversation about potatoes).
All in all, this book was slow in the first half, but by the time I got to the last 100 pages or so, I simply could not put it down. This is a suggested read that will draw you into the world of the Dragonlance novels if you are not already immersed in them ;)

5 out of 5 stars A Fantasy About Real People.......2006-08-27

I came to this novel not as a fan of Dragonlance, but as a fan of Douglas W. Clark. I knew nothing of Solace or Gerrard uth Mondar before opening this book. By the end, I was fond of both.

Clark's seminal series, Alchemy Unlimited, introduced him to readers as a sharp satirist with an imagination suitable for epic fantasy. In Saving Solace, Clark bites his satirist's tongue while still giving us a generous dose of his skills at human observation. Every character in Saving Solace is grounded in the motivations of real people dealing with real problems, making this a fresh novel in a crowded genre.

I love that Clark's characters prove their mettle not by lopping off heads or defeating fierce monsters, but by doing the right things according to the dictates of their own consciences. I also love that Clark's Solace captures the feel of every small town, where folks say hi as they pass one another, then gossip after they pass. It's a town full of characters with turbulent pasts, complicated family lives, and other details that might be left out of a lesser novel.

Some might not like the elegance and maturity of this book, and to them I recommend grabbing most anything else off the fantasy shelf. Nine out of ten random picks from this section of the bookstore yield epic battles, dragons and ogres, sexy elven princesses blah blah blah.

But for readers who find the best escape is the one most believable, Saving Solace is a great pick.

1 out of 5 stars Fire the Local Sheriff.......2006-06-08

This novel is at best, glorified fan-fiction. At its worst...well, it's very possible "Saving Solace" could kill you with boredom. I'm trying to think of a way to explain how bad it is without being a jerk, but it's just not possible. I notice everything but will let a lot slide in novels, especially DL, but every single point you could make about literature is horrendous in "Saving Solace".

Its hard for me to even pick between the prose and the structure, but for fun, let's begin with structure. Here we have the typical badly set up DL book, with 150 pages for the first act and only about 30 for the third act. Usually this means that the end is rushed and you're left with a sour taste in your mouth like you've been cheated, but since the first 270 pages were so bad, I was only left thinking about how the plot was never fleshed out at all. It begins with the sheriff of Solace dying and Palin as Mayor sending for Gerard to replace him. I wish I could say the rest of the novel revolved around Gerard's hunt for the murderer in a finely made game of cat and mouse, solving one interesting clue after another, with Gerard slowly peeling away one layer of the murderer's mind at a time, slowly coming to understand their plots.

But no...I can actually tell you the plot for the first half of the novel with one word: Gerard-ate-a-lot. An entire 150 pages about a man's stomach...a bestseller if I ever heard about it! Other structure problems also include the lack of any known villain, which always hurts, and besides the food, Gerard's way of solving a murder is the bumpkin method of fuddling your way through it. Also, we have a romantic relationship forced down our throats "just because". The whole reason for it seems to be that she's a pretty girl and he's a guy, so they must be together! It's like a law or something.

This all could have been forgiven had the prose been good. Instead, it is the most drab, pitiful excuse for literature that I have ever seen outside of high school. The sentences are painfully simple, running one after another, breaking the oldest rule in the book: "show, don't tell." There are many ways "show don't tell" can be used. One is the macro version, don't say someone is evil, explain why, and show them being evil. The other, even more important version, is don't write a list. Its all about fooling the reader into forgetting the tell with a good vocabulary and switching up on how the sentences are structured. Clark never seemed to learn the latter trick, every sentence is plain, and he uses "then" in the worst way. Sometimes more than once in a paragraph. Then he did this. Then he did that.

Final Thought: Stay far far away unless you are the biggest of Dragonlance fans.

5 out of 5 stars Krynn!!.......2006-03-21

Great book and well done storyline. Humor in fantasy seems a rare commodity these days. Some books have it but only in small amounts. Thank you for the laughs.

If you like books like this one, might I suggest another I've recently come across. The Unsuspecting Mage by Brian S. Pratt. It's another fantasy adventure sure to please. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, Major Problems.......2006-02-12

I haven't read much of Douglas Clark, so I didnt know what to expect. However this was a good book aside from a few minor problems.
1. Where the hell is Mirror??? In Dragons Of A Vanished Moon, we get the point that Odila and Mirror are working together to help free Silvanesti. The "Odila is a cleric of Mishakal" was ok, but why isnt Mirror with her? Also, we dont get much of her as I would like.
2. We all know series are to be continued. In the first book of the Elven Exiles, THe Lioness is spirited away by magic, giving us questions such as: Who took her? Why did he take her? Where did he take her? Why her? In this book there is nothing. We get a sheriff murdered and solve the crime. Nothing else. The girl that Gerard is apparently taken with joins Odila to be a priestess and Odila is leaving since the temple is finished. We've got nothing to look forward to.
3. This is a very minor point but to me, it is important. The Map. At the beginning of the book, we get a map, as always. It lists places such as: The Temple Of Majere, The Temple Of Hiddukel, A Shrine to Zeboim, The Ruined Academy Of Sorcery, A Hylar House Inn, The Fiddlers Inn. These places are of no importance whatsoever in the book.
5.Too much of the book was centered on Gerard not liking this food which he was forced to eat, and not liking this, and not liking that. Does that really help us? I don't think so.
Still, it was overall a rather good book, and I'm happy I bought and read it.

5 out of 5 stars The One and Only.......2002-03-27

Dragonlance Adventures (DLA), by Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis, is "the AD&D game source book for continuing adventures in the world of Krynn." It was published in hardcover in 1987 (later followed by Darksword Adventures, Greyhawk Adventures, Forgotten Realms Adventures, and others) and has not been revised or reprinted since. While it does have its own errors (the timeline, in particular, is considered erroneous), many fans feel it captured the essence and flavor of Dragonlance. DLA is a great resource, so if you find a copy, snatch it up quickly.

Margaret Weis writes: "DL Adventures expressed the DL team's vision of the world, a vision we want to try to recreate with our work at Sovereign Press. I will state here, without apology, that DL Adventures will be taken as the foundation for all things Dragonlance with certain exceptions where applicable (such as the flawed time line)."

DLA provides an overview of the world of Krynn and its history, with a focus on how to run an AD&D campaign in Ansalon set after the War of the Lance. These are some of the main sections in DLA:

"Lot in Life" -- Classes specific to Dragonlance: Knights of Solamnia, Tinkers, Wizards of High Sorcery, and Holy Orders of the Stars (includes information on the 21 gods);

"The Races of Krynn" -- Information on the Krynn-specific PC races and subraces: Kender, Gnomes, Elves, Dwarves (and Gully Dwarves), Irda, and Minotaurs.

"Creatures of Krynn" -- Monsters unique to Dragonlance, including Draconians and Krynn Dragons.

"The World that Was" -- Information on Krynn Pre-Cataclius, including a Map of Ansalon, a timeline, NPCs, and ancient magical items: Dragonlance, Device of Time Journeying, Staff of Magius, Hammer of Kharas, Bloodstone of Fistandantilus, Orb of Dragonkind, etc.

"War of the Lance" -- Information on Krynn Alt-Cataclius, including a Map of Ansalon, a timeline, political conditions, climate, NPCs and PCs of the Legends Trilogy (post-War of the Lance).

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy in its best form.......1999-09-18

The Dragonlance setting is strongly based on the classic Good vs. Evil. The book is excellent, as it covers the history of Krynn since its creation to the war that nearly destroyed it. Complete description of deities, NPCs, new races and classes that are very fun to play. Also included are some cards I never figured out, but I have fun anyway. This world promises the most epic campaigns if you are to really role-play, not just hack ns slash. I strongly recommend it. If you are going to buy it, acquire also the novels from this setting. They should really add to your campaign.

5 out of 5 stars The best adventure book for AD&D ever!.......1998-06-10

It has everything you need to get started in the Dragonlance world, (besides tales of the lance). I would reccomend this book to any and all AD&D players and DM's.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Fantasy!.......2006-05-21

This fabulous fantasy, Temple of the Dragonslayer, by Tim Waggoner, is the first book in an eight part series. The story takes place in the mystical world of Krynn, a world filled with goblins, dragons, ogres, dwarfs, elves and wizards.

The story begins as a young girl, Nearra, wakes up in the forest surrounded by goblins who proceed to chase her deeper into the woods. With no memory of her past, Nearra tears blindly through the forest not knowing why they are chasing her or how she will survive. Alas, the adventure begins!

Along her quest to restore her memory, Nearra is joined by four newfound companions each with their own motivations for making the journey. The friends vow to help Nearra discover her past. But at what cost? The group faces dragons, ogres and goblins on their way to an ancient temple which Nearra hopes will reveal the answers she so desperately seeks. Is all what it seems? Could friends be enemies and enemies be friends?

When it comes to Temple of the Dragonslayer, this book is more than just something to be read, it is something to be experienced. You will need a good block of time to read it though, because once you start, you will not want to put it down! I enjoyed the twists, the turns and the all the action in between. I give this book five stars and think you will too!

4 out of 5 stars Recipe for Fantastic Adventure!.......2005-04-26

Nearra awakens in a forest to discover that she has lost her memories. In moments, she is attacked by goblins and then a green dragon, all intent on hurting her. She manages to escape with the help of others, and assembles a band of curious companions who wish to help her answer several questions, the most important of which is: will she ever get her memories back?

Add these ingredients: a great cast of characters, a sizeable helping of high adventure, an equal sized helping of fun, a smackeral of romance and a pinch of humor in the right places. What you get is this book, a fine example of quest fiction for most ages (10 and up, the back cover says).

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed it!.......2004-12-28

My husband and I have both read the original Weis & Hickman Dragonlance books, and so were curious about this new "young adult" series. We borrowed a copy of this first book to read, and were both pleasantly surprised! We definately enjoyed it, and now intend to add the set to our Dragonlance collection.

4 out of 5 stars A great book!.......2005-03-26

A great book for those who have read other Dragonlance books. It continues the story of Nearra, a young girl who has had the spirit of an evil sorceress transplanted into her body. This book is the quest to restore her memory, and release the spirit.

Besides the few grammatical and spelling errors, there were a few errors in the plot of the book. At one point, their elf friend, Elidor, is tied up by another elf. In the next chapter, Catriona, Sindri, Davyn, and their new friend, Ayanti, are running after Nearra. Elidor isn't mentioned. Yet, when they enter into a room, he goes in with them.

Another error like this, is near the end. Maddoc's henchman, is sent over the tower to his death. Then, a little while later in the chapter, he comes back to life, and helps Asvoria fight our crew. Then, Davyn and Catriona are talking, and Catriona says they could not find his body.

Besides those, this book is very good. I can't wait for the next one!
