The gentle rhyming and gorgeous, tissue-paper collage illustrations in this classic picture book make it a dog-eared favorite on many children's bookshelves. On each page, we meet a new animal who nudges us onward to discover which creature will show up next: "Blue Horse, Blue Horse, What do you see? I see a green frog looking at me." This pattern is repeated over and over, until the pre-reader can chime in with the reader, easily predicting the next rhyme. One thing readers might not predict, however, is just what kinds of funny characters will make an appearance at the denouement! Children on the verge of reading learn best with plenty of identifiable images and rhythmic repetition. Eric Carle's good-humored style and colorful, bold illustrations (like those in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Grouchy Ladybug, and Have You Seen My Cat?) have earned him a prominent place in the children's book hall of fame. (Baby to Preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

A big happy frog, a plump purple cat, a handsome blue horse, and a soft yellow duck-- all parade across the pages of this delightful book. Children will immediately respond to Eric Carle's flat, boldly colored collages. Combined with Bill Martin's singsong text, they create unforgettable images of these endearing animals.

I've used this book (the hard cover version) to teach English to my Kindergarten English Language Learners. They like it! I also give this as a gift to my friends' pre-schoolers. It's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Addicting!.......2007-09-27

From the day we purchased this book, my daughter asks for it EVERYTIME she lies down for a nap or bedtime. I quickly learned it by heart so I could tell her the story in the dark (many times she will fall asleep before I finish). My husband however just changes the story a little bit. My daughter can now read it to us (only 21 months old) and does so often. This book has really helped her learn her animals and colors. I will be giving this book for a shower gift from now on.

5 out of 5 stars Eric Carle.......2007-09-23

Anything by Eric Carle is excellent. This is my son's favorite book. He's 3 and know every animal before we get to the page.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for 12mo olds!.......2007-09-20

We bought this for our daughter for her first birthday. The text is simple, teaching colors and animals. The illustrations are, of course, beautiful. She loves this book!

5 out of 5 stars Inspires reading.......2007-09-09

My 3-year-old granddaughter found this book easy to memorize. She loved being able to anticipate which animal would be next, along with its color. This, in turn, gave her the feeling of being able to read, and I believe it was this book that inspired her to learn how to read "for real" in the next few months. I'd recommend it for younger children as well.

4 out of 5 stars The right and wrong answers.......2007-09-03

Though admittedly few people see much point in reading this book now that the final istalment of Harry Potter has already been read and is now safely tucked in our book-shelves, I beg to differ. I read Deathly Hallows before reading this book, and so knew all the answers to (most) questions, what drove me to buy the book was my uncontrollable curiosity. Being a fan of the website, I thought I'd help them out by buying the book, but what intrested me the most was the arguments. I don't care whether they guessed right or wrong, but how they came to those conclusions! 9/10 times the right answer doesn't matter, as long as you can back it up with sound reason and judgment, which is why I liked this book, and would still recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars No point in buying it now.......2007-08-30

Not only were the predictions incorrect, Now that book 7 is out who would want to read this?

5 out of 5 stars Must Read!!.......2007-08-27

After reading the final installment of Harry Potter I would def. say this a must read. First, it is a quick summary and primer of important info in the past six books. Plus, unless you are super obsessed or a literary genius there are bound to be a few things you learn in the book.

4 out of 5 stars very pratical.......2007-08-23

it really does help to understand some questions you could have or did not
remember why this is there. Good to have before reading Vol.7

4 out of 5 stars Well Researched Book.......2007-07-31

I bought this book just before Book 7 came out and really enjoyed it. While many of the assumptions in this book turned out to be false once I had read Book 7, it was nonetheless a well-researched book. The arguments for each stance they took - both pro and con - were plausible and quite believable and convincing. You could tell the authors had done their homework and really knew the world of Harry Potter. I think I may go back and read it again now that I know what really happens to see where they were spoton and where their ideas missed the mark. In any case, it is a great resource whether you have been a Harry Potter fan or are just discovering his world.

Jezebel and Delilah have plenty to teach contemporary Christian women, according to Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them. In this self-help book, Liz Curtis Higgs tells fictionalized, contemporary stories based on the lives of biblical characters including Eve, Potiphar's Wife, and the Woman at the Well. In verse-by-verse commentary, Higgs summarizes each life's lessons and provides a list of questions for personal consideration or group discussion. The overall message of each chapter is the same: "Good Girls and Bad Girls both need a Savior. The goodness of your present life can't open the doors of heaven for you. The badness of your past life can't keep you out either." In its effort to turn readers' minds heavenward, Bad Girls draws a distinction between fun and joy. Associated with "fleshly pleasures," fun "is temporary at best; it's risky, even dangerous, at worst." Joy, on the other hand, is found in God's "gift of grace." Perhaps the book's greatest weakness is its inability to see that "fun," in many lives, is a holy and necessary means of attaining "joy." --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

Women everywhere marvel at those “good girls” in Scripture–Sarah, Mary, Esther–but on most days, that’s not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they’re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel’s take-charge pride or Eve’s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today’s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.

So what’s a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God’s grace, choose a better path. In Bad Girls of the Bible, Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them.

Whether they were “Bad to the Bone,” “Bad for a Season, but Not Forever” or only “Bad for a Moment,” these infamous sisters show women how not to handle the challenges of life. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.

1 out of 5 stars Female Chauvinist .......2007-03-10

Our church book study group mistakenly purchased this Bad Girls of the Bible instead of the one by the other author.

While I had great difficulty getting through the first chapter, I am now using this book to improve my understanding of the Bible, and to learn more about ancient times.

This writer makes-up her own story lines, and conveniently leaves out portions of chapters and verses that do not fit her story line. For example, in chapter two, she states that Egypt where Joseph is held as a slave by Potiphar, is a dry hot land. Perhaps she should read just a little earlier in the Bible. In Genesis 13:10, we are told different.
10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar.

While the ordering of this book was a mistake on the part of the person who ordered the books for us, I believe it is a Godsend for us to read and discuss this book, though I doubt we will actually be using the questions at the end of each chapter. Instead we will ask questions regarding her inaccurate portrayal of these women and the facts of history.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Women's bible study.......2007-02-06

Our women's small group has gotten alot of knowledge and insight from this book! Bad Girls of the Bible helps us discuss some topics that we might not otherwise. The author is wonderful at helping us see the character of these women. It is very well written. I highly recommend this book for a bible study with your girlfriends!

5 out of 5 stars Funny, moving, meaningful.......2007-01-11

Liz Curtis Higgs juxtaposes fiction and nonfiction in the same book. Read the stories of modern "bad girls" while guessing what Bible character they represent. Then read the nonfiction essay on the Biblical "bad girl". Find out how they were bad, why they were bad, and what God did about it. Liz describes herself as a "former bad girl", so she really gets inside the skin of these women. This book is so good that I can't keep it on hand. I've lent out and given away multiple copies to women who never fail to enjoy the book and experience God in a meaningful way. Get one for yourself and one for your daughter/mother/best friend. (I'm a former bad girl myself.) Then go for Really Bad Girls of the Bible and Unveiling Mary Magdalene by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2007-09-21

My girls and I so enjoy reading the other book in the series, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?". My twin girls are 2 and they would actually sit with the other book and read it to out loud to each other, so it was a great find to have another book in the series for us to read, the illustrations are colorful and a great book to learn new vocabulary words.

4 out of 5 stars Reading to your kids.......2007-09-08

This book is a great one to read to your kids.

I like this one more than his Panda Bear and Brown Bear because I can get the kids more excited about sounds. I've read it to groups of young kids and encourage them to make the sounds with me. I'll "roar" like a lion and "snort" like a hippo and the kids will parrot me. They have a lot of fun with this and you get them to start talking about sounds other animals make. They will remember the sounds after just the first reading and get excited any time they see me pick up the book.

It's really cute to watch one kid "read" this to another after we've read it in groups a few times. The kids will remember the animals and will sometimes ask "what do you hear?" and make the sounds for each animal as they go through. It's a wonderful feeling seeing them learn and remember.

5 out of 5 stars Must-have book for kids!.......2007-08-26

My kids love this book and "Brown Bear Brown Bear." The illustrations are wonderful, and they love the animals!

2 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-08-08

As any reader of the Brown Bear knows, these books are really meant to be read out loud. But who the heck knows how a peacock sounds (can YOU yelp?)? Or several of the other animals here. I just tossed it away in frustration.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Book.......2007-07-02

My 18 month old daughter enjoys this book. We have fun looking at all the different zoo animals. The one thing that I don't like is the last page. I wish that it had pictures of the animals instead of children dressed up as animals. When my daughter is older she will like that.

Book Description

A world-renowned child psychiatrist offers a groundbreaking new perspective on how stress and violence affect children's brains--and how they can be helped to heal

What happens when a young brain is traumatized? How does terror, abuse, or disaster affect a child's mind--and how can that mind recover?

Child psychiatrist Bruce Perry has helped children faced with unimaginable horror: genocide survivors, murder witnesses, kidnapped teenagers, and victims of family violence. In The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, he tells their stories of trauma and transformation through the lens of science, revealing the brain's astonishing capacity for healing. Deftly combining unforgettable case histories with his own compassionate, insightful strategies for rehabilitation, Perry explains what exactly happens to the brain when a child is exposed to extreme stress-and reveals the unexpected measures that can be taken to ease a child's pain and help him grow into a healthy adult. Through the stories of children who recover-physically, mentally, and emotionally-from the most devastating circumstances, Perry shows how simple things like surroundings, affection, language, and touch can deeply impact the developing brain, for better or for worse.

In this deeply informed and moving book, Bruce Perry dramatically demonstrates that only when we understand the science of the mind can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Food for thought.......2007-09-02

The book lives up to its fascinating title. Perry has worked for years with traumatized and neglected children and his take on dealing with them is based on research showing how the brain develops and the impact of neglect and abuse on it. In other words, if a child is abused or neglected in the first year of life (approximately), physical changes take place in the brain or rather, neurological connections that should be made, are not. (This is a vast simplification.) So as a child gets older and begins exhibiting antisocial behaviors that land him or her in special classes or even mental hospitals, it is not because he or she prefers to act this way but because the child's brain is unable to function in a way that enables him or her to become socialized. Perry, having done a great deal of research on this subject himself, spits in the eye of a lot of "accepted" practices when it comes to children's mental health. I'm always interested to read views that oppose the generally accepted norms. My daughter loaned me this book which she is reading as part of her Ph.D. program in pre- and postnatal psychology. It certainly fits right in with her assertion that we need to pay much more attention to what is happening in the first year of life (and before), not only because the child's personality is being formed, but because his brain is as well (and perhaps this is the same thing). The stories in this book are heart wrenching, but Perry does show that there are ways to help or at the very least, understand.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing new ideas .......2007-07-24

As a counseling student focusing on child therapy, I was very glad I stumbled across this book in the local library. Perry explores the role of brain structure in childhood disorders. While he focuses primarily on trauma (such as how PTSD in children mimics ODD and ADHD), I believe that other applications can be made. This is novel to hear in a world of tired exclusive arguments pro or con genetics, brain chemistry, and environment. Perry combines a few of these ideas to give the mental health worker a more comprehensive look at mental illness and trauma. The case stories are heartbreaking and compelling. A worthwhile read if you are going into the mental health (or even teaching) field, and interesting even if you are not.

5 out of 5 stars I feel blessed to have found this book. .......2007-07-11

My husband and I are about to adopt our first child. We are adopting through DHS. All children who are adopted through DHS have been through trauma. We have been taking classes when our teacher recommended this book. I went out and bought it and read it and it was so insightful to what we may be dealing with. I feel so blessed to have this information about the brain and how children may act out in times they feel out of control. I truly believe that EVERY foster/adoptive parent should read this book. It was amazing and I will probably read it again. I can't stop talking about it. I am just blown away and very thankful for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!.......2007-07-05

I couldn't put this book down. I learned so much that I can apply to myself as well as my kids. I have two adopted children who came from severe early childhood neglect and abuse, so this book is invaluable to me. The only problem is that it has left me thirsty for more from Dr. Perry!

5 out of 5 stars Truly remarkable.......2007-06-27

The stories in this book are heart-wrenching, but to people who've dealt with traumatized children the scenarios and the aftermath are familiar. What is truly remarkable about Dr. Perry's work is that he uses each case he describes as an opportunity to explain how the developing brain is affected by trauma and how healing can be informed by this knowledge. Unlike many other books in this genre, this is no "great therapist cures poor abused children" book. Dr. Perry is modest about his own contributions, and rightly emphasizes the role that parents, extended family, and community must play in helping to heal traumatized kids as well is preventing trauma from occurring in the first place.

As the parent of a child with PTSD, I've read extensively on the subject. I'd really have liked it if Dr. Perry could have included a recipe for cure in the book, but of course that's just my wishful thinking, not a realistic hope. What he does give for parents who are looking for help is guidelines and guidance for finding the right kind of help, not just from therapy but from the larger world. What I learned from this book will definitely contribute to my ongoing work to help my daughter find her way out of the nightmare that her past put her in.

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Fun & Knowledge.......2007-09-25

This book is a plethora of adventure, fun, and knowledge for both young & old. I've been reading this book with my grandson. He loves it and has learned a lot. Actually I am learning some new things too!
I'll say it again that I don't know how in the world I missed his books when my boys were growing up!! I must have been on another planet or something! Glad I got back in time for my grand children!

5 out of 5 stars We LOVE this book.......2007-09-25

I personally believe a better title would be "How things work". There is great detail in Richard Scarry's illustrations showing how things work such as: a Sawmill, Paper Mill, Flour Mill, all with gears and pully's. There is wonderful detail in the process of building a house; framing, plumbing, electrical, etc. The "Voyage on a ship" gives an inside look of all the goings on, including the crew's quarters, and the engine, with pistons, propeller, and rudder. If you have a young child who is fascinated by how mechanical things work, this is an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Check the Edition Carefully.......2007-09-21

The New Ed is also abridged, even though it doesn't say so in the title. The abridged versions have 64 pages--the original version has 95 pages. If you are looking for the original version, check the page count before you order.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching book.......2007-07-04

This was a favorite book of mine when I was a child and I was glad to see it still in publication. I purchased it for my four year old who loves books. I think it is great because it not only shows a variety of occupations but also shows a great deal about how things work. It shows wiring and plumbing for a house, how they process grain into flour which becomes bread, etc. My child is still trying to grasp where food comes from (since we don't live on a farm) and where water comes from (out of the tap) and where it goes (down the drain). I also reccommend his Busy Town book which is in a large format also.

5 out of 5 stars My 3 year old loves this!!.......2007-05-18

This is a great book for inquisitive little minds and all the whys in the world. My son loves this book and we read it every night. It is great for Mums and Dads too, as it helps with answers to everything related to the subject. My only grouse with it is that the drawings are a bit out of date, but that cannot be helped as the author did write it a long time ago. I would recommend it to anyone with a pre-schooler. Makes a great gift.

5 out of 5 stars What'd I Say? I say "fantastic.".......2005-05-28

Had it not been for Ahmet Ertegun and his family moving from Turkey to America, more than 75% of the music that would come out over the time afterward would never had come to be and the musical mainstream would dramatically have never been the same.
I consider Ertegun to be would one of the best musical geniuses of the 20th century for it was he that started the snowball rolling and it kept getting bigger and bigger. He had his own acetate-cutting machine when he was a kid (pretty neat) and wrote his own songs. Close with his brother, Nesuhi, the two were avid jazz fans. When Ahmet got the urge to make records and hire acts to record for him, he founded his own record company with partner Herb Abramson in 1947 from a $10,000 loan from Ertegun's dentist. The rest is history. Atlantic had a huge roster of stars from jazz and R&B greats of the '40s, '50s and '60s to hard rock bands of the '60s, '70s and '80s. It starts with background history on Ahmet and continues on with the start of Atlantic from the '40s to the present. This huge book chronicles it all loaded with quotes from artists and from Ahmet and the production team as well as tons of photographs. It is pricey but it is worth every penny. Thank you, Ahmet Ertegun. American music would never have thrived without Atlantic!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have!!.......2002-07-31

Ahmet Ertegun what a Important figure in the Music Business? the Guy truly knew His stuff at making a label Important.just His Association with Ray Charles&Aretha Franklin alone speaks volumes to me.He had a strong Idea of what He wanted&He got it.in it's Hey Day Atlantic Records was as Important as Any Other Label then or Now.the one thing you get after reading this Book&Hearing the Atlantic Box Set is that Ahmet Ertegun could vibe with anyone.a Must Have.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable!.......2002-02-01

I had the supreme honor of working for Atlnatic Records as a promotions Manager in the '70s, so I saw first-hand a lot of what's in this book. I saw it through the label, the artists, radio and retail. And lemme tell you, the book is spot-on accurate. The two words that best describe Atlantic Records are sophisticated and engaged, and those characteristics come top-down from the founder, Mr. Ahmet Ertegun, and through all of his management.

While the book is an amazing account of Atlantic Records, what is more is the indispensable perspective on the music business at large. For anyone even remotely interested in the history of this industry and its artists, this book is vital.

The cost is a bit pricey, but the old saying you get what you pay for has never been more true. The oversized book features fantastic photography and superb quality. I just wish it would have had included a 30-song sampler of the history of Atlantic artists.

5 out of 5 stars This is one big beautiful book.......2002-01-11

First of all, this book is huge and weighs a ton. That is appropriate for the subject matter, because Atlantic Records is a huge presence in the history of rhythm & blues and rock. Chock full of pictures and commentary, this presents a totally fascinating portrait of Ahmet Ertegun and his record company, including all the great artists associated with Atlantic. From the early days with artists such as Ruth Brown and the Clovers, through the early career of Ray Charles, and on to Otis Redding, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and the incomparable Aretha Franklin, Atlantic Records made its reputation in R&B. Less well known, but hardly less influential, is its presence in the jazz world, thanks to Ahmet's brother Nesuhi. In the late '60's Atlantic expanded into the field of rock with Cream, Led Zeppelin, and, later, the Rolling Stones, and was a major player in art/progressive rock by signing such bands as King Crimson, Yes, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

They could have ended the book in the early '70's, in my opinion, because after corporate buyouts and sellouts, Atlantic's imprint became less distinctive. Face it, Foreigner could have been on any label and it wouldn't have made much difference. Later forays into country music seem very un-Atlantic, to say the least. But during its heyday, there was no label putting out as high a level of quality music as Atlantic records, and this is its fascinating story.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......It was worth the wait!.......2001-08-26

Ahmet Ertegun has to be one of the true legends of popular music in the 20th century. When I first heard that Ertegun had penned the story of Atlantic Records 2 to 3 years ago, I immediately searched it out. But for some reason publication was delayed over two years. Alas it's here. This huge book has everything. First hand oral historical accounts on the birth of R&B with Ray Charles, Jerry Wexler, Otis, the Drifters through the evolution of 60's Rock with Cream, the Stones and Zepplin. The photos are spectatcular and Ertegun's own accounts insightful.....A brilliant man with impeccable taste. He may be the hippest son of a Turkish ambassador to ever found a legendary record label. While I personally can do without the more recent sections dealing with 80's and 90's music (how can you include Jewel with the likes of Ray Charles and Ben E. King?), this book is so huge (almost 10 lbs.) that the majority of the book far exceeds all expectations. At a time when lightweight books by airheaded groupies who played abolutely no role in the creation of a musical revolution somehow make their way into publication, this book stands alone as a classic account of a time when the musicians really were artist who paid their dues, song writers were stylists, and goood taste and genuine talent not only mattered, but actually sold records. If you are a true music fan, this book is the next best thing to being present at the birth of the R&B. One more suggestion, get the Atlantic R&B box set. If I were allowed to keep but one body of work from my music collection, this would be the one. It is the Rosetta Stone of modern R&B.

From the first time David Cross and Bob Odenkirk's cocreation aired on late-night TV in 1995, Mr. Show began developing a cult-like following, which has only grown since the series end. This lavishly-illustrated book features original, never-before-seen material — plus a complete episode guide — making it a rich, unique retrospective.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Mr. Show fan..........2006-02-19

I'm usually not one for writing these reviews, but I thought i would spread the wonderfulness that is Mr. Show. If you haven't seen it, check it out, you'll love it, and then you'll want to pick up this book. It's an amazing account of how the show started, and it comes with an episode guide, and what Bob and David thought about doing each particular show. Pick it up, you won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars This book is very tall.......2005-08-25

The pages literally dwarf my fingers. The book is printed on massive, slick paper hotglued into the spine, where sit strategically-placed ball bearings, all to make reading this monster a chore--well, unless you're reading it while lying on your stomach. Then it's easy. Plus, I must admit that I've lost 72 pounds turning the heavy pages, and all the ladies comment on my abs (the paper cuts finally healed). So, Bob, Dave, Naomi, thanks for that. You probably saved my life.

On the serious side, WHAT HAPPENED?! is strongest when the author, Naomi Odenkirk, steps back and allows the writers/performers/guest stars/hangers-on to speak, using an oral storytelling format pioneered by Legs McNeil and Gillian Gaar's PLEASE KILL ME. Its failings are more evident in Naomi's prose, which is passable and at times amusing, but could've benefitted tremendously from a more strident editor, as well as another cutthroat round of proofreading--this sleek little volume is riddled with errors, leading/font issues and consistency, and misprints.

Despite all that it lacks, it's great to have Bob and Dave on paper, and WHAT HAPPENED?! does a serviceable job chronicling the sturm and DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN of HBO's finest comedy. Recommended, but with a slow exhalation.

On an unrelated subject, I would like to take this opportunity to announce my intent to become Amazon's top reviewer. I will stop at nothing to reach this goal. Over the next few weeks I will be conducting full-scale investigations into the lives of all who precede me, and am willing to challenge even the heftiest of scribes to fistfights near the corner of Sunset and Vine in Hollywood. I have the wind of passion and hunger at my back, propelling me to stardom like Clubber Lang doing chin-ups; you folks in the Top 10 had better watch your backs. You've been complacent too long. You will taste the silver of my rapier scallawag.

3 out of 5 stars Satisfying "before," disappointing "after".......2005-02-16

If you're a big Mr. Show geek like I am, you're going to buy this book no matter what any review says, so you might as well quit reading and start spending. But your satisfaction with your purchase will depend upon how you interpret the "What Happened" in this book's title. If you take it to mean "what happened in each of the episodes," you'll get exactly what you want and be thrilled to fondle its ever-stickier pages. But if you assume, as I did, that the more pressing question facing Mr. Show fans is, "what happened to cause this brilliant show to be taken off the air, thus rendering my life meaningless," you'll be sorely disappointed.

There is no discussion whatsoever about the show's cancellation, its aftermath, etc. I can imagine many political reasons for omitting this information/carping but doing so does not increase my satisfaction with this book. Perhaps the Odenkirks are prepping us for a sequel, leaving us hungry for more, but somehow I don't think so.

The strong suit of this book is the information on how Mr. Show came into being, how the cast members met, their work before the series. Some tidbits that were new to me: Bob Odenkirk wrote that SNL Chris Farley sketch about "living in a VAN down by the RIVER;" Bill Odenkirk has a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry.

The only way I can satisfy my craving for more fantastic newness is by watching all of my Mr. Show DVDs, obliterating my memory with drugs, then repeating the process again and again. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2004-10-25

If you're a serious fan of Mr.Show and a serious fan of comedy then you'll definately dig this book. It gives great insight into the actors themselves as well as the creation of each eposide from the early writing process to the final completed show. And for anyone wanting to get into comedy writing themselves it is truly inspirational and a must read.

3 out of 5 stars I Licked This Buk.......2004-07-12

I licked this buk, I licked this buk very much. Straynge howe the two projecks released by the genyuses... sorry, the geniuses behind Mr. Show, the funniest sketch show of them all (while it lasted), both turned out to be horrendously shoddy productions. I mean, Run, Ronnie, Run? Why, boys, why?! Why center your one shot at a feature film around a character who amounts to just another typical parody of just another TV show, and Cops, to boot! Sure, David's song was sweet, but one good bit does not a movie make. The entire "let's parody Cops" comedy idea was DONE on the Ben Stiller Show 10+ years ago, NO MORE WAS NEEDED! Anyway, so that movie sucked, quality-wise (oh, but their heart was in the right place and they were only screwed by the Big Conglomorate Boys! How many times they gonna use that excuse?!) and so does this book, production quality wise. Anyway, so what. Like many of the fans have said, at least it gathers in one place all the geeky info the fans like to have, the fact that it's at a xeroxed fanzine level doesn't matter... that much, or should I say "mutch". Only complaint I have is that I felt a little like the Mr. Show creators, or "The Genius Squad," as I like to call them, were, through the half-baked premise and execution of their "film" and this "book," all excuses revolving around supposedly nefarious dealings aside, kind of thumbing their noses at the fans, as if we should all just "be cool, man" and not retain any rabid interest in this show, this "Mister Show," which we found so damn funny, so mind-breakingly inventive, and, yes, so cool that we just had to have a little more. Then again, I may be (I am) paranoid. For all the flaws the show may have had, Mr. Show is still the best thing any of these guys have been involved in to date. So, buy this book but be prepared to cringe. Oh yesss, and regarding the controversy over the short mention of Mary Lynn Rajskub. Yes, she was only on the show because she was sleeping with David. Heck, even I have had Ms. Mary Lynn Rajskub!

This book is really hands on, and gets lots of talking and questions going with my 3 and 5 yr olds. It's a clever book and we've had a lot of fun with it.

5 out of 5 stars From preschooler to kindergartner to Mommy, everyone loves this book!.......2007-08-21

My family loves this book! Both my sons, ages three and five, enjoy trying to guess which animal this tail, nose, foot, etc., belongs to, and then reading what the animal "does" with it. In the back of the book are more in-depth descriptions of the animals, which we also enjoyed. We ordered this book from Amazon over a year ago, and it is still a top choice when we sit down to read!

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this!.......2007-06-13

Great educational and fun book! My kids' favorite is the horned lizard shooting blood out of his eyes. Lovely collage illustrations too.

5 out of 5 stars Lucky twice.......2007-05-26

It is a good, informative book. Although my 9 years old son seems to be very old for this kind of reading, I still bought it for him because of the book's educational value. Surprise, surprise! - my Big Boy liked the book a lot(!) We now quiz each other about various animals... Another good book that I value a lot for its educational content is Why Some Cats are Rascals, Book 2 by B. Nowiki. I was afraid that in this case my son would to be a "little too little", but he is now reading it and seems to have even more fun... - lucky me, again!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating animal facts.......2007-05-13

Little known anatomical facts on a number of interesting animals that should entertain inquisitive youngsters.

Book Description

"Taha Muhammad Ali speaks with an emotional forthrightness. . . . He has developed a style that seems both ancient and new, deceptively simple and movingly direct."- The Washington Post

Taha Muhammad Ali is a revered Palestinian poet whose work is driven by vivid imagination, disarming humor, and unflinching honesty. As a boy he was exiled from his hometown, but rather than turning to a protest poetry of black-and-white slogans to convey this loss, he has created art of the highest order. His poems portray experiences that range from catastrophe to splendor, each preserving an essential human dignity.

Neither music
fame nor wealth,
not even poetry itself,
could provide consolation
for life's brevity,
or the fact that King Lear
is a mere eighty pages long, and comes to an end,
and for the thought that one might suffer greatly
on account of a rebellious child.

So What will include Arabic en face and introductions by co-translators Gabriel Levin and Peter Cole. Muhammad Ali will be one of the international poets featured at the 2006 Dodge Poetry Festival, and he will embark on a reading tour of the United States in the fall of 2006.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Palestinian insights.......2007-07-20

I am a Palestinian and the poetry evoked memories of my youth. Arabic poetry is full of imagery and excellent insights into what makes us human.

5 out of 5 stars New and improved.......2007-07-19

This Copper Canyon Press edition of Taha Muhammad Ali's poems is a greatly enhanced update of his earlier, Ibis Press "Never Mind" through which much of the wider reading public most likely first encountered this remarkable voice. The enhancements are significant, not the least of which is the Arabic/English en face presentation of the poems. The temptation to learn at least enough Arabic to get closer to the actual sound of Taha's poems is powerful. Even the wonderful introduction, by Israeli poet and translator Gabriel Levin is updated, adding, along with the additional poems, more pearls to the necklace.

The other translators, Peter Cole and Yahya Hijazi, complete a team of translators whose product illustrates the thesis of "Found In Translation", (another recent publication, from Toby Press, of Hebrew poetry, also introduced by Levin (establishing Levin as linchpin in this esoteric literary congregation of the very few humans who live in a truly multi-linguistic artistic arena)): poetry translated by poets able to enable monoglot readers to access the poetry itself, that which lies above and behind the forms. The translations by Cole, Hijazi, and Levin are of a quality with which readers of John Elwolde's incredible translation of "A History of the Hebrew Language" by Sa'enz-Badillos will be familiar; that is, themselves works of art.

The importance of this phenomenon cannot be allowed to go unnoticed: the Middle East in the voices of poets translated into English, thank God, by people who know the poets, speak, read, and write in their languages, and for whom English is a parent Tongue (Levin's father was the American writer Meyer Levin) may create the forum in which the people, whose voices they are, can hear and be heard.

"Abd el-Hadi Fights a Superpower"

In his life
he neither wrote nor read.
In his life he
didn't cut down a single tree,
didn't slit the throat
of a single calf.
In his life he did not speak
of the New York Times
behind its back,
didn't raise
his voice to a soul
except in his saying:
"Come in, please,
by God, you can't refuse."

_

Nevertheless -
his case is hopeless,
his situation
desperate.
His God-given rights are a grain of salt
tossed into the sea.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury:
about his enemies
my client knows not a thing.
And I can assure you,
were he to encounter
the entire crew
of the aircraft carrier Enterprise,
he'd serve them eggs
sunny-side up,
and labneh
fresh from the bag.

VII. 1973

Don't you yearn to hear these words in Arabic? Perhaps there will be a DVD.

A Palestinian is finally being heard who does not just speak for the silent majority but is one of them, and Israelis and Americans helped make it happen. Peter Cole traveled with Taha on tour. Gabriel Levin, who, and this cannot be overnoticed, is literate to the artistic level in English, French (his mother is the celebrated French writer Tereska Szwarc), and Hebrew. These are artists performing Nabokovian linguistic feats.

Readers! We are so lucky to be audience to this. "Come in, please, by God you can't refuse."
