What They Didn’t Teach You in Your Screenwriting Course
Screenwriters, listen up!
Breakfast with Sharks is not a book about the craft of screenwriting. This is a book about the business of managing your screenwriting career, from advice on choosing an agent to tips on juggling three deal-making breakfasts a day. Prescriptive and useful,
Breakfast with Sharks is a real guide to navigating the murky waters of the Hollywood system.
Unlike most of the screenwriting books available, here’s one that tells you what to do after you’ve finished your surefire-hit screenplay. Written from the perspective of Michael Lent, an in-the-trenches working screenwriter in Hollywood, this is a real-world look into the script-to-screen business as it is practiced today.
Breakfast with Sharks is filled with useful advice on everything from the ins and outs of moving to Los Angeles to understanding terms like “spec,” “option,” and “assignment.” Here you’ll learn what to expect from agents and managers and who does what in the studio hierarchy. And most important,
Breakfast with Sharks will help you nail your pitch so the studio exec can’t say no.
Rounded out with a Q&A section and resource lists of script competitions, film festivals, trade associations, industry publications, and more,
Breakfast with Sharks is chock-full of “take this and use it right now” information for screenwriters at any stage of their careers.

MEDIOCRE.......2007-08-03
First a disclosure - I am not a screenwriter. I am an avid reader. So the fact this book didn't thrill me may mean nothing. If you're in pursuit of this dream you may have the background to assess the advice proffered.
From purely a readers point of view I think the book could flow better. I have a keen interest in most things Hollywood, and those chapters dealing with Hollywood as town were intriguing. Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need
Good advice for any entrepreneur .......2007-07-29
I read this book expecting to find a lot of Hollywood gossip. Instead, it was a down to earth 'how to' guide for becoming a star-screenwriter.
Some of the suggestions are very specific to the industry. For example, how to decide when to move to Hollywood or how to get across the San Fernando valley for an interview when you don't own a car. Most of the advice is fairly general, though. Ben Franklin would approve.
The text is fast paced and entertaining. It doesn't quite read like a novel, but you will start watching for the author's name to appear on your local cinema.
Breakfast with Sharks!.......2005-05-31
Wow! Full of sound advice from experience. Michael Lent is clearly someone who pays attention to the whole process. The best part is he shares it with the rest of us! This book is fun to read from start to finish. Lent constantly encourages the reader (screenwriter) to adopt an attitude of, what I would call, "strategic humility" in their business dealings. How rare!!! This stuff helps in life too! I've never written a feature length screenplay, but I still found this book efficacious in learning the ins and outs of this goofy industry. And I know goofy - www.chrismundell.com
Practicle Advice.......2005-02-08
I'm on my third reading of Michael Lent's "Breakfast with Sharks" (2-7-05), and I highly this book to any screenwriter making serious go of trying to sell his/her work.
Micheal Lent doesn't make things up. His book is filled with real life "lived" experiences.
This book is a godsend if you've a written a screenplay and have started your foray into the next scary step-selling!! "Breakfast with Sharks" will help you disciminate information and buzzwords used at screenwrinting seminars and help decode the Hollywood Creative Directory.
My favorite section in the entire book is "Studio Notes: What They Are and How to Handle Them".
Overall a great book, insprationaly it ranks right up there with Karl Iglesias' "The 101 Habits of Hightly Successful Screenwriters".

One way to fish through the crowd.......2005-01-21
As a beginning screenwriter I know the competition is fierce especially for those like me without film school, living outside of Hollywood. That's why I bought Breakfast with Sharks. There isn't a screenwriting resource out there like it. Sure, I've bought a few screenwriting books but most of them say the same things, how to write a screenplay and a query letter. This book delves into the business of screenwriting, if you don't have a father in the business you will need to learn the business and Breakfast with Sharks is a way to do it. I found the book also enjoyable to read with personal stories of Hollywood misfortune and finally success. Breakfast with Sharks rises above the competition with a unique purpose and helps you to write above the competition with what many others forget to bring to Hollywood, a plan and a unique voice.

Zillions of Pictures.......2007-06-08
This is a great book for pool ideas. It contains ideas for just about every kind of pool and there are lots (350, at least) of photographs. This is just what I was looking for since we are planning to put a pool in our yard and it's a blank slate. This books is great for those without a lot of imagination, like me.
More pictures than you can shake a stick at!.......2006-05-02
I looked through lots of pool idea books in my local book store and none of them had as many pictures as this book. There are a few pages of text in each chapter, but the bulk of this book is 4 (or so) pictures per page which is exactly what I wanted in an idea book. I recommend highly.
Excellent Buy.......2004-06-15
This book has a great variety of pool designs from contemporary to rustic designs. Fabulous book with alot of great pictures.
Book Description
The author brings you information you need to make intelligent decisions about the safety and treatment of your water. Don't Drink the Water also contains a complete resource guide to assist you in becoming active in one of the most important issues of our time. "This is the most up-to-date and readable work I've seen on the subject of contamination of our drinking water and how to protect yourself from it. Study the advice given in these pages and act on it." Andrew Weil, MD
Customer Reviews:
Some good info, but not enough.......2002-03-25
For the reader who currently knows nothing about water contamination and purification, this is a decent book, since it provides some eye-opening information. However, there are better books out there, depending on what you're looking for.
For specific advice on water contamination and safe water alternatives, including bottled water and home purification, I recommend Colin Ingram's "The Drinking Water Book." It has more information and a better format, including a simple chart that rates the effectiveness of different home purification methods for eliminating different contaminants (something this author didn't include).
If you're looking for something more political, buy "The Sierra Club Guide to Safe Drinking Water." This lists specific steps to improve drinking water on a larger level, including political action and people/agencies to contact. It also includes a list of major U.S. cities and their violations of water purity regulations. Finally, it lists the EPA drinking water standards in an appendix. Of course, it also includes advice on safe water alternatives, but this is not as extensive as the recommendations in The Drinking Water Book (see above).
Very Scary! Excellent Read! A Must for Every Nutritionist.......2000-07-24
I just got finished reading this book in between classes, and all I can say is WOW! Be aware, and beware of your tap water. If these statistics are correct, then the EPA and the U.S. government are not concerned with protecting your right to clean water, and therefore, you must educate yourself in order to protect against degenerative disease.
[ 1991-1992 EPA records showed that the nations water systems committed over 250,000 violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, affecting more than 100 million Americans - and 10% of those exceeded the MCL (Max Contaminant Level) of the EPA. ]
This book is a great start finding out the truth of the matter. Toxins are everywhere! We all need to learn where they exist and remove them for our own and our childrens sake.
Someday, a high ranking official on TV may review this book, or a similar subject and try and spin these numbers a certain way to make it not sound so bad, but don't be fooled. Statistics seldom lie. Only politicians do. Politicians can come from any field, not just government. Politicians come from industry, medicine, lobby, and big business etc. Be a detective, and look for anything that doesn't make sense.
"The Truth is Obvious, Everything Else is Questionable"
Read this book! It contains vital information........1999-08-17
This book is certainly a very factual and "blunt" book about the seriousness of our domestic water quality. With the coming "Y2K" event on the horizon, I believe Lono A'o's comments are even more appropriate and noteworthy. I have given this book a 5 star and I am giving serious thought to making this book a required reading for all the students in my Environmental Studies class at New England College. That's how serious I believe the issue is.
Very thorough about current water filtration methods.......1998-08-28
If you ever plan on buying a water filter of any kind -- this is the book to read. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I wish it would have given more specific information regarding name brand water filtration systems available and where to get testing information etc.

Shadows in the Water.......2006-11-17
Shadows in the Water mostly takes place in the Florida Keys during summer. In this book there are two sets of twins. The first set of twins are July(boy)and Liberty(girl)they are both 12.The second set of twins are Charly and Molly, both girls and both 5.They all have telapathic powers and can talk to each other through their minds. In the begining of the story July and Liberty were unhappy because school was going to begin soon and they were going to have boring lives, until the next day the children's father,Put,told them that they were moving to the Florida Keys from their home in Washington D.C. for his job(catching toxic waste dumpers.)When the children get there they discover a mysterious boy named Robbie that has bandages over his hands. After about a week of being there July and Liberty sneak out into the night. They sail in their boat to an island and find many turtles. For the next couple weeks July and Liberty sneak out, until one night they find dolphins waiting for them at the shore. The dolphins tell the twins about Cuda and his toxic waste dumping crew. The twins and dolphins meet at the island many more days, then one day when July and Liberty sneak out they find Charly,Molly, and Robbie in the boat waiting for them.As they ride the dolphins that night they decide to meet the next night and sail to Cuda's house. The next night when they reach the house Robbie,July, and Molly got cught by the crew. Liberty and Charly had to think of a plan.I think this book was very good.Everyone should read it because it is adventurous, mysterious, and I enjoyed it a lot.
Suspenseful.......2005-12-05
The main characters in this book are Liberty and July. They are twins who have telepathic channels. They just got back from a trip to London where their dad, a special worker for the government, ended another crisis.
This time their dad drags them to the Florida Keys where he can end the crisis of a very serious chemical called diploidmysterol. This chemical keeps being dumped into the ocean killing tons of sea life. On the twin's way they run into a lot of problems. For example, the twins get stuck in these drunken guy's home on an island they've never even heard about. While they're there they find out that these are the guys who keep dumping the diploidmysterol into the ocean.
The time with major events is at night, because that's when the twins always sneak out of the house. You always want to be sneaky at Pelican Key, because even if you don't know it some strangers might be watching you.
The theme is that the twins are trying to constantly save everything they come across from the diploidmysteroil, including themselves.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It constantly gave details to enjoy. The author made a very constant statement of getting the point across in an enjoyable manner. Another thing is that the author doesn't always use such fancy words like diploidmysterol.
interesting.......2004-01-16
I read this book when I was 10 and really enjoyed it. So now that I am 15 and had to do a book report for school I decided to read it again. Although I am now five years older it was still very interesting it dosen't seem like required reading because it is fun. It draws you in and lets you use your imagination.
An Exciting Page Turner.......2002-01-24
I enjoyed Shadows in the Water because it is such an imaginative novel but yet seems so real. The Starbuck Family is full of unusual features. Including two sets of twins, Liberty and July (feternal),Molly and Charly (identical), the Starbuck Family goes on many wild adventures. To make the story even more exciting, both sets of twins are telipathic. On this expidition, the twins are sent to the Florida Keys. Meeting up with some toxic waste dumpers, the children find that a beautiful dolphin's life is at risk. Being able to communicate with the dolphins using their telepathy, the children do the best they can to save this beautiful dolphin.
This book is very thrilling. If you decide to get it, I hope you enjoy it.
Book for all ages.......2001-05-11
This book might be one of my all time favorites, I've read it about 8 times now and it never gets old. I recently bought the book before it because I was so impressed with Shadows in the water. The writing is incredible and the story untouchable. The twins are so life like and you can almost hear the dolphin's voices in your own head. This book can be enjoyed by all ages

Book Description
Myth, like denial, is central to human existence and no one has made myths better than Hollywood, shaping how we think about ourselves and those around us by reinforcing stereotypes or creating new ones. This book is about how Hollywood has portrayed medicine over the last sixty years, as seen through the eyes of a board-certified internist on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The author blends brief historical context with an in-depth discussion of more than seventy films that illustrate what the public has valued in doctoring, the changing attitudes towards science, and the evolution of issues that still confront and divide us. Assisted suicide, abortion, concerns about health care costs and impersonal high-tech medicine are all in evidence. Two chapters deal with the virtual invisibility of women and Black doctors in film. The book has an extensive filmography and bibliography inviting readers to explore the subject further.
Customer Reviews:
what a FUN book!.......2000-06-28
Everything about this book is entertaining -- its theme (we've always had strong opinions about doctors), its subject matter (movies, good and bad), and its style (peter dans has a wonderful dry sense of humor). It's also an enlightening book. It lets us look back at what our standards were--for doctors and for movies--and proves once again that times change and life is much more fun if we don't take ourselves too seriously. Doctors and movie buffs will enjoy this book most of all. Everyone else will find it a great read or a great gift.
Movie buff's delight.......2000-01-28
This book is fun and compelling. I'm not sure what I enjoyed more -- his dry wit and frank assessments of movies obscure and well-known -- or his physician's insight of medicine and its myths.
