The definitive work.......2007-08-31
I had read that the book was "the Bible" of backgammon. But I think it is more than this, it is the definitive book on the game, it is the Bible, the Torah and the Koran all together. Other books simply repeat - sometimes with other words - what Magriel has said.
Besides he goes deep in his comments on various aspects of the game like "builders", flexibility and so on.
If you are interested in the game or want to improve this is THE book!
Early Edition - Superceded by 2004 Edition.......2007-07-27
This is the early edition of the book, without the 10-page foreword. See the 2004 edition for an interesting introduction to Paul Magriel and the creation of this book.Backgammon - 2004 Edition
Great Book.......2006-04-18
Really comprehensive and precise, helped me a lot in my backgammon ( http://www.play65.com/index.html?did=13870&tag1=11 ) game. if you want to know a thing or two about the game - give this backgammon book a try!
Clear and comprehensive, with lots of positions.......2006-03-01
A great starting point for someone who wants to become a good Backgammon player. While the book is long, it doesn't drag, and the material is well presented.
Brilliant in its day but that day has passed.......2005-04-07
This book is amazingly clear and well written but several positions are wrong. As are 2 whole chapters. Get 'Backgammon Bootcamp' by Walter Trice for an excellent accurate book.

Bill Robertie did not become two-time backgammon world champion and one of the greatest players of all time by pursuing a conservative game. He calls his style "dynamic backgammon" and he teaches it in this book, aiming his lessons at the raw beginner as well as experienced players. He starts at the very beginning--setting up the board--and takes the reader through his approach to every element of play. It's an approach that pays off, as his championship record shows. The book is rich with clear diagrams and explanations, with three sample games that illustrate his points well.

Backgammon for Winners, 3rd ed., Robertie.......2007-02-17
A fine book by an author who obviously knows the game. Has improved my game, but can't help the role of the dice. My wife beats me all the time. But after this book, not by as much.
A new player's view.......2004-07-24
I wanted to get into playing backgammon at some of the online sites, but I hadn't played in years. I figured I needed some help so went looking for a book on backgammon and more or less at random picked Backgammon for Winners by Bill Robertie. And it turned out to be a decent choice.
It's a fairly thin book, which I liked. I didn't want to spend 2 weeks reading about the history of the game (at least not right now). Robertie jumps right into the meat of the subject, first giving the rules and a bit of broad strategy as well as best opening moves for every possible first roll of the dice. But the bulk of the book is taken up with three different sample games, and Robertie analyzes each move of each game, giving lots of explanation for why something was a strong or poor move. While he suggests you set up a board and move the pieces yourself, there were enough illustrations that you don't have to do so (I didn't).
By the time you work through these three sample games you'll understand backgammon notation, the different phases/styles of a backgammon game, why control of certain points is more important than others, and you'll even see examples of when the 'rules of thumb' should be broken. He does a good job of urging you to go back and reread a section if its covering difficult material, keeping you from glossing over it with an "I'll figure this out later" shrug.
Overall, I'm thinking this is a good first backgammon book. Recommended.
Good quick introduction to aggressive Backgammon.......2003-01-10
I've been playing chess since I was a little kid, but a group of friends at the local coffeehouse started to play a lot of backgammon. So this book was a first attempt at seeing how the pros approach this dice-based game.
In short, the book is great if you want a quick read that outlines the best opening moves and gives you a feel for aggressive 'modern' backgammon. In addition to the rationale behind how to use opening dice rolls, the book gives you 3 sample games and lets you hear the pro's thoughts on possible moves. My favorite line is "He could play 14/20, moving the blot on the 14-point to safety, but this is a craven play, unworthy of a modern player." :) How could you not like such opinionated tutelage?? I could have used more exposition on why some seemingly valid plays (e.g. hitting an opponent's blot in your inner table even though its deep) are really less effective. Even better would be some statistical analysis showing why some moves make sense when looking at the odds, but I'm not sure there's such a book out there.
Typo Heaven.......2000-09-15
An interesting book for the semi-advanced player is destroyed by typo after typo, a fault that ultimately drives the reader mad. What's going on in the publishing world?
Good beginner book.......2000-04-12
This book is as good as any for the raw beginner. The great Robertie explains the rules of the game, basic objectives, and opening moves, and then takes you through three sample games. That's about it, and if you're an experienced player you won't learn anything from it you don't know already. On the plus side, Robertie's conversational style is more enjoyable than some of the older beginner books, and he tries to explain things that aren't obvious to the novice (for example, a 5-5 looks like a great roll here, here's why it's not). All in all, a short user-friendly guide for the novice.
Product Description
Backgammon is the most highly-regarded work on the subject, often referred to as "The Bible" of the game. Written between 1973 and 1976 by Paul Magriel and Renée Magriel, Backgammon was the first book to lucidly explain the inner workings and advanced positional play of the game. The most important aspects are broken down into their component parts and then explained with a unique, easy-to-understand, step-by-step building-block approach. The book is enhanced by 600 clear and precise diagrams, a glossary and tables, including the betting odds. For any player who means to take the game seriously and wants to play well, Backgammon is an indispensable guide. This new 2004 edition of also includes a lively behind-the-scenes foreword by Renée Magriel Roberts that illuminates the man behind the name "X-22" and describes the creation of the book. Having stood the test of time for over a quarter-century, Backgammon is still the best and most widely recommended and quoted standard instructional manual and reference work on the game for novice and expert alike.

Backgammon.......2005-12-12
I had intended to first try to read the other two reviews, but am somehow not sufficiently profieint to access.
I do not know how anyone serious about Backgammon could rate this book any less that 5 Stars. It is perhaps not for the novice or not serious player.
While I've read other books, during the time period in my life when I was very serious about backgammon, playing 3-5 nights a week both gambling and competing in tournaments, this was in fact my Bible. I would often refer back to it to see where I'd gone wrong when I knew I'd been beaten by superior strategy vs. raw luck of the roll.
I directly attribute my stable financial success during the years I played/gambled seriously to this book.
This book both taught me strategies which permitted me to expand my game to respond to both the luck of the dice and my opponent's strategy. Equally or vastly more importantly, it taught me how to effectively use the doubling cube.
I'm thrilled that it is back in print, since the last copy I bought just slightly used for a friend because this was my only choice was rather expensive.
Brilliant in its day but ..........2005-04-08
This book is amazingly clear and well written but several positions are wrong. As are 2 whole chapters. In it's day this was the best book period. Now I would start with 'Backgammon Bootcamp' by Walter Trice for an excellent accurate book. I would think about this after 'Classic Backgammon Revisited'. I rated this too low as it should b a 3 star but there doesn'tseem to be a way to change the rating just the review
A Classic is In Print Again.......2005-01-28
Magriel's Backgammon took me from a hobby player into a good local competition player. It taught me how to think of the relative value of the points, of different kinds of games, and how to keep the calculator constantly going in the head. It teaches a way of thinking that has not gone out of style. It teaches.
There is more to the game than this book. There are books to explore which add to the thinking, to work out scenarios in which Magriel may not help enough. Doubling is presented but not explored - to become a strong player a book on doubling strategy (and psychology) is essential. And the co-author, his ex-wife Renee, describes in a forward the mistake of calling the opponents's five point "golden" when the neighboring bar point is more valuable as an early goal in games.
However, as a book to start learning the game from, and to develop into a decent player, I know of no equal. Magriel is a teacher and took the time to craft a wonderful book.
Small aside. Shortly after the original book was published Magriel helped an Artificial Intelligence researcher, Hans Berliner, with a Backgammon program. This is the late 1970's. The program - BKG - was brought to Monte Carlo in 1979. Or accessed remotely from the tournament. The winner of the Monte Carlo tournament, Luigi Villa, played the program five games and lost 7-1. The program disappeared. Berliner wrote an article for Scientific American (6/80). And that was that.
For content and freshness after 25 years (when I first read it) this is five stars. I subtract one for it being priced like a college text book instead of a game book.

more than i expected.......2007-01-16
i'm a backgammon player for more than 20 years and this book has given me many solid and useful insights in statistics, common situations during the game, strategies etc. I loved it! Not to mention that the writer has a great gift of putting his ideas clearly and objectively.
Increased my rating on FIBS by 100.......2003-05-14
I had been stuck below 1500 on FIBS internet backgammon server for over a year. After studying this book for about a month, my rating increased by 100 points. I have since read Bill Robertie's other books, and I am now at 1650 on FIBS. The basic tips highlighted in this book are worth the cost of this book alone. To get the most out of this book, you need to use a backgammon board and play along with the diagrams, and compare what you would usually do compared to what an expert would do in the same situation. Great for beginners and intermediates!
As the title suggests, best for serious players.......2002-02-19
Dr. Robertie presents over 100 backgammon situations in this book. All of them have serious analysis. Not for the novice, but if you're a backgammon hound, it's worth the read. His analysis of the end game is especially good.
easy to read, fast progress results.......2001-02-11
I didn't know anything about backgammon: notation, strategy, etc. I read this book and found it was easy to follow the games and his annotations. Then I started beating people who previously would easily beat me. 'Nuff said.
Good lessions for medium level players.......2000-11-29
Don't wait to find here great secrets or crunch positions to study, in this this book, Bill Robertie reviews 5 whole games, between top flight players. There are good tricks on then, as he chose particular matches with diferent points of strategy. You will find basic rules of the modern way to play backgammon, by reading Robertie's reviews, but if you already mastered basic strategies and want something more instigating, look for Kit Woolsey's New Ideas in Backgammon.

dynamite comes in small packages.......2007-01-13
Though its` title says "improve", the book is in part meant for budding experts. Most of the book is geared towards intermediate level players. There is a wealth of information on the doubling cube in match play(very interesting). Money games are not forgotten and Mr. Lamford explains the use of modern computers for both gaming and match play. He also uses exercises to gauge your understanding. Even with parts aimed at experts, it will still teach what needs to be learned to go from mid level to an advanced one, both easily and naturally. The amount of knowledge in this "little" book is unexcelled and NEEDS to be in every players library. the value of this book cannot be understated and is worth far and away more than the few pennies the book costs. May you get the same pleasure I`ve received (or more).

Good for Beginners and Intermediates alike.......2007-05-28
I'm only 3/4 of the way through this book, but that's far enough to gauge the benefits that this book provides for the Backgammon player who wants to get better.
With 501 sample problems, you will find that many (never all) situations that will come up in a game are illustrated here. The format is easy to follow, with each of the 31 chapters containing problems and solutions for facets of the game from openings to bearing off, and blitzing to holding games, and the author's comments in the solutions provide the tips that can be memorized. For example: faced with a choice, say between making a point, or hitting a blot, "do the hardest first." In Backgammon there are exceptions to almost every rule, and Robertie covers these also. I'd also like to point out that this is an extremely "fun" book, that you can pick up for 5 minutes or 55, at lunch, or in the car!
Other than the most basic rules of the game, like how to set up the board, everything is covered here, from beginner on up. Robertie has a real gift for clarity, and is able to speak to EVERYONE, from someone new, to an expert, in a clear, focused voice.
Expect to Improve / Highly Recommended.......2006-04-18
This is a great, affordable book on backgammon that will quickly improve your backgammon game. I haven't read Robertie's "Advanced Backgammon" books, but I have read this one (501), BG for Serious Players, and BG for Winners. They are all good depending on your level, but this one and "Serious" I found very helpful. Between these 2 books, 501 has had the greatest effect on my game than any other BG book I have ever read.
His approach is as simple as it gets. He discusses strategy and then gives you examples of how the strategy is implemented. The book is very easy to follow and you seem so soak up the teaching very quickly. (Nevertheless, this should not be your first book on BG. You should already know basic strategy before you get into this one, e.g. BG for Winners) The book is very broad as well. It covers practically every area and situation of the game you are likely to face, and will give you some very good principles to use in determining your move. Due to the format, this book does not have to be read in a continuous way from beginning to end as most books. It can be consulted as a reference when you need some help on a particular aspect of the game and do not want to trudge through an entire book on the subject.
As with chess books, oftentimes the writer's recommendations are checked by a computer program and "errors" pointed out. I do this alot just for fun with chess problems, but I can't say it has helped me one bit when I let the computer do the thinking for me. He is human and one can hardly expect perfection when compared against todays computer programs. Further, a writer chooses examples and moves are presented in a manner that illustrates the point the author is making, when in fact there may have been a mathematically more accurate move elsewhere.
However, I think this computer analysis approach misses the point somewhat. Robertie is trying to impart principles and tools to the reader that can be used to evaluate a position and choose the best move, and this book does that very, very well. This approach will help you "think on your feet" and have a good set of principles in your head to help you evaluate and choose your move. The human brain can recognize patterns and positions and can apply principles in the situation, but it can never calculate like a computer and would advise you to avoid any approach that is strictly mathematical.
As I said, I have never read Robertie's "Advanced" series, nor Magriel's "Backgammon", but if I had to choose one BG book to take on the proverbial desert island, this would be it.
Amazing Backgammon Exercises.......2005-10-16
This book is of great tactical value. It let's you exersise and perform 501 plays that will change the way you play Backgammon. Not just a theoretical book, but actually a much more practical approach.
Roll Like the Gentle Creek.......2005-08-22
Backgammon is as good as it gets. The rules take minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. Each checker on the board plays an offensive and defensive role, as the two opposing forces march past each, one going clock-wise, one counter-clockwise. And then there are the dice. Like chess, there is a tremendous amount of strategy involved in how to play each roll, but the dice add another level of probabilistic strategizing. And sometimes the better strategy loses, just because the rolls don't come through.
Bill Robertie, "The world's best backgammon player" according to the back cover, breaks the strategy down into discrete 31 topics, examples being "the opening," "the middle game," "the blitz," "crunch positions," "action doubles," and "the bearoff." The topics are covered by a series of snapshot moments from a potential game. You're given a certain layout and a dice roll and asked what the best move is. Then you flip to the answer section of each chapter and see what Mr. Robertie thinks is the best move and why. As someone who was a student for over 25 years, I'm well acclimated to this format of testing, and quite comfortable with it. However, the snapshot approach doesn't address what many players do wrong, which is to lock-in to a strategy early in the game, or to have overall certain tendencies, instead of focusing on the flexibility to change strategies at any time to match the action of the game. This strategic flaw is analogous to a football coach who says you always have to establish the run before you can pass (think Mike Ditka, Dan Reaves), as opposed to a coach who approaches each team differently and can adjust to the opponent throughout the course of the game (think Mike Shanahan, Bill Belichek). It's also seen in brokers who chase after trends in the stock market, or poker players who try too hard to avenge their last hand and lose their perspective.
Like other reviewers, I did find flipping back and forth between problems and solutions to be annoying, but not a deal-breaker. You just need two bookmarks and a little patience.
I recommend this book. I think it has helped my overall decision making skills in Backgammon. But it won't solve the big problem of not being in the moment, of not reacting and adapting strategy to each roll of the dice. A book won't fix that. Meditation might help. Wading through a creek might help. Relaxation techniques, mindfulness exercises, and beta blockers wouldn't hurt.
gammonline.......2004-07-08
This book contains invaluable information for the improving backgammon player. It suffers from it's unfortunate layout (as do all Robertie books) --- poorly located diagrams or solutions in relation to the diagrams. Still the contents are a must read (and reread) for any advancing player.

the section about the doubling theory was the most importan one for me.
Excellent for the advanced player.......2001-08-07
This book really helped me improve my skills. There are two really good sections on Doubling. A nice chapter on the back game. Other topics are duplication, flexibility, priming, slotting.
This book helps me win more games!
Book Description
Backgammon is the ultimate race game and has been enjoyed around the world for over five thousand years. Although the play is highly skilful, the fact that the moves rely on the fall of the dice introduces a large element of luck. In the long run the better player will always win, but the beauty of the game is that even a novice can win the odd game against a world champion.
In this user-friendly introduction to the game, ex-British champion Paul Lamford provides newcomers to the game with a thorough grounding in the essentials of play.
Customer Reviews:
The best book for a beginner.......2006-01-12
I used to be reluctant to approach the player tables to watch, because I knew so little about the game: its play and strategy.
Now I feel that I have been coached by a real champion and Paul Lamford was the Backgammon Champion for England and Wales. The author's advice is practical and confidence building. I wish I had read the book long ago, but I am happy that I finally did and recommend it to all beginners.
Simply the Best.......2005-12-30
I am a professional player, and I think that this book is simply the best one available for players who are seriously interested into the game from beginners to advanced players.
it is not for someone who just wants to know about the rules
in order to play occasionally.
It contains a lot of important concepts and - contary to many other beginners books - contains nearly no errors. and - its rather cheap!
Second best: the backgammon Handbook by Heyken and Fischer..
Highly recomemndend
Great book, but not really for beginners.......2003-03-05
The ideal reader for this book is someone who has already played a lot of backgammon and has a feel for basic checker play, and is now ready to become good. People who don't yet have a feel for the ebb and flow of the game will be better served by books like Robertie's Backgammon for Winners and Backgammon for Serious Players--those books are built around annotated games.
Lamford takes a different approach, packing an exceptional amount of useful information into a slim volume. Lamford tells you things that experts know but that you won't learn from any moderate amount of over-the-board experience. It is a beginner's book in the sense that he tries (reasonably successfully) to distill the information into maxims and rules of thumb that are fairly easy to remember. The books is exceptionally clear, but it says most of the important things exactly once. One often wishes for more examples or a more extended discussion. Whenever you feel this way, you should reread--the information was there, it was just so concise that you didn't get it the first time.
Get the book. If you don't understand it, put it aside and pick up Robertie (and play more games). But come back to it when you're ready for it because once you're no longer a raw beginner, it will help you get better faster than any other.
Terrible.......2002-07-23
This is a terrible book. It doesn't accomplish what it purports.
The back cover says, "Learn backgammon from scratch"; "An ideal
first backgammon book for all ages." A bunch of lies. The title
should be: To Double or not to Double; To Take or Pass. Because that's what this book is about: 95% of it bows to the contemporary player's god -- the doubling cube. Nothing is said
if it doesn't lead to a cube decision. In other words, you don't learn the game, you don't learn tactics or strategy(that should come first!); all you learn(maybe) is to double or not to double.
I said 95%. What about the other 5%? Also bad. The author contradicts himself. On page 20 he tells you that when you have to choose between hitting a blot and making a point, you should
hit. On page 21 there's an exercise where you have to do precisely that. But then you look up the solution and the author advises you to make a point and not hit!! When he's explaining the rules for beginners he tells you that if you have two checkers on one point, your opponent can't move onto it, but he forgets to tell you that this is called "making a point"; later
he uses this expression, which he hasn't explained. I know that, you know that, but does a rank beginner know that? And it's not
on the (poor) glossary at the end of the book either.
In essence, if you want to know more about the cube, maybe this book will help you; if you want to know more about the game itself(strategy, tactics), you'd better look elsewhere.
Good introduction to the doubling cube.......2002-04-17
This thin book is packed with useful information. Neural net software has significantly changed the way backgammon is played over the last 15 years, and this book incorporates those lessons in an excellent introduction to the game.
Furthermore, this book is the best introduction to the doubling cube that I have encountered. I grew up playing backgammon with my Armenian father. If you are also Armenian, Turkish, or Greek, you may have grown up playing backgammon in your family and already have a strong grasp of checker play but a weak grasp of the doubling cube. Other introductory backgammon books may be too simple for you. They may include one chapter on doubling which explains *how* to use it, but not how to evaluate a position to decide *when* to use it. And if you try to pick up an advanced book (like I did a few years ago before Lamford's book was available), the description of doubling decisions presumes so much prior knowledge as to be virtually unintelligible. This book adequately covers doubling theory at a beginner to intermediate level. Doubling decisions are kept in mind in every chapter of the book, and common reference positions are provided that show exactly when to double and when to take or drop.
Finally, the book has great reviews of both neural net backgammon software and of online gaming sites. This alone makes most previous introductory books obsolete.

Great Info But Too Many Unexplained Terms.......2004-06-29
This is a terrific book, full of insightful and thought provoking information that will surely improve anyone's game. However, the authors have chosen a very conversational writing style that presupposes their readers are familiar with advanced "Backgammon Speak". I for one was not up to speed on this and find the use of unknown and unexplained terms both frustrating and annoying! Clearly anyone purchasing this book is interested in learning and in most cases is probably playing at an intermediate level. To assume that readers at such a level would already be fluent in advanced "Backgammon Speak" is short sided and makes comprehending the wonderful information presented unnecessarily confusing. I have since found an online glossary of backgammon terminology and reference it often while reading this book. At the very least a glossary should have been included or an even better approach would have been to explain some of the more obscure terms the first time they are used.
Fantastic from begineers to experts.......2000-07-09
The New Ideas in Backgammon published in 2000 truley out does Woolsey and Heinrichs 1996 book of the same title. One would ask, whats new? Having started playing backgammon on the internet, I find the 2000 edition complete with tips on the various tournaments, and competions found on the internet sites, such as fibs and pogo. Highly recommend the insights, improves your game. See you all at the tables!
How to think about backgammon.......1999-12-22
This is a fantastic book for the intermediate and advanced player. The authors skillfully dissect 104 difficult positions, pointing out even the most subtle aspects. It is this careful observing and weighing, done out-loud, that makes this book so valuable. In the end, you learn much more than the solutions to these specific problems -- you learn how to reason about all future postions you encounter.
Outstanding work.......1999-07-08
This book will take its place on my bookshelf next to Magriel's Backgammon and Robertie's two-volume Advanced Backgammon. The material is exceptional in all respects. First of all, this is a book of 104 problems that have been systematically selected to give experts fits. In fact, in every case a majority of 11 experts (the game's actual player, the two authors, plus a panel of 8) failed to find the correct move. Additionally, the correct moves have been validated by extensive human and computer analysis, so this book doesn't have the "error rate" that other books have. The authors are world-class players and world-class teachers of backgammon, so the writing is clear and crisp. A fantastic book.
Study this book because your opponents sure will........1999-02-25
Backgammon is wildly popular these days with Internet tournaments (and those kind you have to roll the dice in) mobbed. You can have a lot of fun playing this game without sinking your teeth into the subtleties of the difficult problem positions in "New Ideas." If however, you would like to actually WIN one of these competitions - your chances would be greatly improved by taking up the challenge this book offers. Woolsey and Heinrich are able to verbalize how to make these difficult decisions and the concepts they introduce are widely applicable.

very wise choice.......2007-01-04
This book has helped me considerably with my decisions for backgammon matches
One of my favourite backgammon books.......2002-04-01
I have about a dozen backgammon books and this is one of the better ones. The positions included cover a huge range of situations and teach a lot of useful key positions. I find his tips and various rules of thumb highly educational.
Personally, I much prefer Lamford's writing style to Robertie's. It's clear, helpful and straightforward (not sensationalist). His PRAT (position, race & threats) advice on doubling is something I've seen no where else, and it's a very useful tool indeed.
It's good for beginners keen to get into the more complex aspects of the game and intermediates working to improve, but experts may find the limited amount of deep analysis disappointing (I'm rated about 1800 on FIBS).
Test and Improve?.......2001-07-26
I agree with the subtitle of the book about testing your skills.... but definately not on Improving your game. The answers and the tips at the end of each quiz are telegraphic ... nothing you would benefit from. Testing your skills? Yes maybe the results of the tables can give you an idea of your level.
