5 out of 5 stars Our Second Copy of This.......2007-10-02

We have used our first copy until it is ragged. Because we travel a lot within our state of Alaska, this is a perfect resource to have in the house. A must for tourists expecting to travel in our state.

4 out of 5 stars Alaska topo.......2007-08-28

Other than the fact that the scale is way to small at 1:250,000 this is a valuable resource that is very useful. I carry one of these for every location that I go.
Go idea to tape the pages because the stable binding falls apart with use

4 out of 5 stars Useful for the average traveler.......2007-07-18

We were on a driving trip in Alaska and wanted a map with details about the terrain as well as roads. This altas fits the bill. Our only complaint is that almost everyone in Alaska uses "milepost" numbers on the main highways as landmarks and even their street address in some places, and those reference points are not included along the roads on the maps. Even so, it was a big help for our trip.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Mapbook.......2007-07-05

Alaska Atlas by Delorm has more bang-for-your-buck than any other map product I have seen. The only other map product that even compares is the 7.5 minute USGS National Geograhics State Series maps on CD (but they are much more expensive and require printing.) Delorm is not as detailed as the 7.5 minute USGS topo maps, but they are in my opinion grahically more pleasing to the eye. Bottom line, for the price, you probably will not find topographical maps of this quality anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars The best Atlas I have ever saw on Alaska.......2006-07-19

Complete, detailed, with all information you may need. A must and in a large format. If you plan to travel to Alaska by any means, do not miss this!

4 out of 5 stars Delorme Quality with a lot of versatility.......2007-08-01

These are one stop maps. Just about anything you need to know to navigate an area on foot, motorcycle or car is on easy to read pages, provided you are not overwhelmed by details normally found on Topographic maps. If you are looking for a road atlas, buy one and leave these to those looking for a little more detail. Plenty of other useful info included such as park information, camping, fishing piers, boat ramps etc. The info varies by Gazetteer.

    5 out of 5 stars anonymous.......2007-06-27

Delorme produces an excellent resource. If you need very specific detailed pages, you'll also need a Thomas Guide.

3 out of 5 stars North Carolina Atlas & Gazetteer (North Carolina Atlas and Gazetteer).......2007-06-01

Bought in order to better plan my bike trips. Was disappointed to find numerous errors (2006 Edition) in street names of some main roads in my area and that the scale (1:500,000) does not allow for much detail. It does not suite my purpose and have few alternatives given we live off the usual city maps coverage. Will use it for car trips but the lack of detail and errors leaves me doubtful of its usefulness for leisure activities.

    5 out of 5 stars NC Gazetteer.......2007-01-04

I bought this atlas and gazetteer for my mother who loves to travel in books. She had heard about it on a travel program and wanted one. She has thoroughly enjoyed it and has found a lot of places in NC that she had heard about and would like to visit one day. She had never heard of it before but it was exactly what she was looking for.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but a couple complaints.......2006-09-25

This highly detailed map is an invaluable reference but its size and layout make it cumbersome to refer to on the go. Also there's no overlap from one page to the next. If your route is in the middle of the page, you're in luck! But going from Asheville to neighboring Black Mountain requires flipping among 4 different pages.

    5 out of 5 stars Utah Gazatteer.......2007-07-05

Great maps as always from DeLorme.. I have 6 different states, great for fly fishing, fishing and hiking.. You can use the GPS cordinates to get to specific locations. A must have for the fisherman, hiker and camper.

    5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-06-02

I think the title says it all. It is very useful. I got it really fast and it is flawless.

5 out of 5 stars I love these DeLorme maps.......2007-04-23

I love these DeLorme maps. I love traveling in the West but since I live in New Jersey, I get a little nervous sometimes when driving around Utah or Arizona - it's just so empty compared to what I'm used to. These Delorme atlases are my security blanket. They're so detailed that no matter where I am, I can look at the map and find a road or a landmark that will reassure me that I'm in the right place.

4 out of 5 stars New Style OK But Not Great.......2005-08-03

I have been a huge fan of DeLorme State Atlas and Gazetteer books for 20+ years. I will never plan a trip without one. I find them absolutely indispensable and have them with me on any car trip, period. I do however have a preference for the older style of mapping used on the earlier editions. I used to own an old Utah Atlas and Gazetteer and much preferred it to the new one. The enhanced topo information and colorations are neat but the actual road mappings have a new style that are annoying to me. It is much harder with longer dashed lines for unimproved roads to determine whether the road intersects another one. Anyone who does backroading in Utah knows that when a road is near another on the map does not mean they intersect. One road could be 1000 feet below another and both will dead-end. It is not fun to plan a trip not being sure whether your road goes through. Although I still like the maps, I feel the need to have another topo source for backroads. I wish DeLorme would update their Atlas and Gazeteers in the old format rather than the 'slick' newer style.

5 out of 5 stars Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona... Great places for these.......2003-09-18

I have several of these of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. Duplicates of each... one in the house for planning and study, one in the truck. Occasionally I rotate them so they don't wear out too quickly. I gave Delorme top billing in my Desert Emergency Survival Basics book, but you don't need a desert and you don't need an emergency to need a delorme atlas. Any rural area in the United States is probably covered by them.

If you spend a lot of time in the back country these maps are the best alternative, from my point of view. It's true the maps don't have labels on the back country cow trails another reviewer complained of. The fact is, neither do the roads. But it's often helpful when you come to the fork in a dirt two-track and they both wander off a few degrees off North, to be able to crack open the Delorme and discover the one on the left plays out just over that hill over there at a windmill. There's no excuse for needing labels these days. A compass and Delorme will allow you to locate yourself in most instances.

However, even the back woods purist ought to own a GPS. I've been wandering around the back woods longer than most readers of this have been alive. I rarely get lost, but I frequently don't know exactly where I am. Occasionally my old TrailBlazer saved me a lot of walking to get back to the truck. Once it saved my life in a snowstorm, I imagine.

For motor traveling you'll cover too much ground to allow the 7.5 minute maps to help much. You pass from one map to the next too quickly. When you are afoot a couple of them become useful. Meanwhile, I use Delorme as one of the ways to keep track of my wanderings. I recommend them wherever you are. And a GPS, as well.

This book has it all! My hubby just entered the boating world, and this book is a great guide to rivers, campsites, boat ramps, and more. A must have if you are the adventure type!

3 out of 5 stars Florida Atlas and Gazetteer (Florida Atlas & Gazetteer).......2006-07-13

A bit difficult to handle (size). Good enough to use in your car.

5 out of 5 stars Florida Atlas and Gazetteer.......2006-02-27

Easy to read and use, invaluable when traveling in city or hiking in rural areas. Very detailed, provides names of area sites that are interesting to stop by, which are not included on road maps.

2 out of 5 stars LACKS OF DETAILED STREET NAMES.......2003-12-31

I use this book occasionally, but it is lacks the detailed for use by itself. Where I do use it is with mapquest, that tends to not show the smaller lakes, but the Gazetteer does a much better job.

    4 out of 5 stars Florida Atlas & Gazateer.......2003-01-16

This is the second Delorme Atlas I have purchased and it contains a wealth of information regarding lakes and rivers for fishing. Secondary roads are clearly marked, as are boat ramps and launching areas. Many lakes are identified as to species of fish that are there. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to locate fishing areas throughout the entire state. While many of the smaller roads are not identified, it shows enough information to be able to get where you want to go. My only advice would be to label more of the smaller roads leading to the lakes.

5 out of 5 stars Atlas and Gazetteer.......2007-05-08

Great Product! Nearly as good as having a seperate map for every county in the whole state.
I like it best because I can read the text much easier than a state map, especially in low light. My bifocals are OK for reading but not the fine details of most maps.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful on those family roadtrips.......2007-04-04

I have nothing but praise for DeLorme. We have purchased and used 5 states now (Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Colorado, and Arizona), and each has enabled us to really enjoy some spontaneous vacations. I plan to buy one for each state I visit.

    5 out of 5 stars Arizona Atlas & Gazetteer.......2007-02-16

This is a must have for finding the tucked away backroads of Arizona....

4 out of 5 stars Great Arizona Topo map.......2006-03-20

We needed to locate some undeveloped property in the Show Low Pines area. This map and the internet were great in assisting us. We use our Colorado and Wyoming ones all the time. They are a great resource for people who like to do beyond the end of the road!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT map for exploring Arizona.......2004-11-01

I used this map when exploring Arizona on two separate occasions. Delorme makes these maps for nearly all states in the US. If you're ever going to explore a state - USE THIS MAP by Delorme. It's well organized, provides information on parks, unique spots like waterfalls, historical sites, etc. You can also find obscure roads not normally seen on tourist maps. I bought the Delorme maps for Colorado, New York, and Virginia as well.

    4 out of 5 stars Scale.......2005-08-14

It would be good if Amazon reviewers of maps and atlases used the standard definitions for "large-scale" and "small-scale."

    5 out of 5 stars Great Deal.......2004-07-12

I love this map. I always take it with me when I go anywhere in Colorado. The scale is small enough so that you can see all the little back roads, and it's pretty easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for travel in remote areas.......2003-04-14

You should receive the sixth edition (2002) of the DeLorme Colorado Atlas & Gazetteer when you order from Amazon, even though Amazon's listing still shows only the fifth edition (2000). The atlas is indispensable if you're planning to travel on the back roads or the major Forest Service or BLM roads of Colorado. Governmental jurisdictions are well-differentiated by color, and the topographic relief is very nice.

The only caveat is that the scale of the maps in this atlas, at 1:160,000, is too large to show great detail. If you're mountain biking or hiking in remote terrain or on minor trails, you should get additional maps, such as smaller-scale governmental maps or those made by Latitude 40.

great product! these maps even show little dirt roads that are on private land! amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Virginia Atlas & Gazetteer - Tons of content.......2005-08-09

This Atlas, like all in the DeLorme series of Atlas & Gazetteer references, are wonderful map resources. A wealth of information is included. If anything, the level of detail, coupled with the topographic information, may seem a bit too much at first glace (if you are new to these guides). But if you're willing to spend a bit of time with the maps, you will find these guides to be very useful.

In addition to the maps and the useful indexes and cross-references, these guides include listings or location sources for hiking, camping, fishing, recreation areas, unique natural features (waterfalls, bridges, caverns, natural areas, etc.), bicycle routes, horse trails, etc. And of course, GPS (Lat/Lon) coordinates are printed on each map.

Although the scale of these maps demand it, it would be nice if the guide book dimensions were a bit smaller. At 11" x 15.5", it's a good size book, so it's not quite as easy to stow in the backpack or the motorcycle storage area, etc.

Overall, these are excellent guides for any traveler or outdoor enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer, 4th ed.......2005-08-02

Like all Gazetteers by DeLorme, the Virginia version is excellent. The accuracy is commendable, although I do have several minor suggestions for the immediate area where I grew up. They are things that no one would know other than one who had lived there for a period of time. The Gazetteers are amazingly interesting and useful.

1 out of 5 stars This is an old edition.......2005-01-10

    WARNING -- WARNING -- WARNING

Delorme published a 5th edition in 2003. This edition (4th edition) is an older one. If you want the most currecnt edition you will need to look else where. This edition is copywright 2000 with information that appears to be accurate to 1999. New roads, etc not on this edition.

Although it will probably be acceptable for many uses, just make certain that you are willing to buy the older edition.

    2 out of 5 stars Not a normal atlas........2003-12-28

Normally, atlases give you a tiny overview of the whole area and then zoom in on the metro areas and places of interest to travellers. This one has no zoomed in areas. Every page is at a broad overview magnification, so it's tough to see even major highways and roads in the metro areas. Not good if you are new to the area!

    3 out of 5 stars It's good but..........2007-09-22

The detailed maps are great but guys...no use looking for a road map of Maine, I mean the whole state as it doesn't exist: incredible! so do order a map in addition!!

    4 out of 5 stars good maps.......2007-08-31

This is a good map if your going to Maine. The only thing I think they should add is more street maps of the towns down the coast. We had to buy them when we got there.

5 out of 5 stars huge help on the road.......2006-11-05

I strongly recommend this product for anyone visiting Maine and unfamiliar with roads and highways in that state. We found the Atlas very helpful in finding the shortest routes and alternate routes over traffic-clogged route 1.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Atlas.......2006-11-03

I live in Maine. Virtually everyone here knows and uses this product. It is THE atlas of Maine.

    5 out of 5 stars the Gazetteer.......2006-07-23

I would not want to be without this map when referring to locations throughout the state of Maine. The gazetteer is an invaluable resource.

5 out of 5 stars Great Roadtrip companion.......2006-11-04

Delorme Atlas and Gazetteers are esential in planning my road trips and as take-along maps. I don't worry about getting lost or whether I should deviate from my planned route with these in the car for reference!

5 out of 5 stars What exactly does the San Fernando Valley look like from the air?.......2006-03-02

While visiting family in Encino, a portion of Los Angeles, I was curious to know what exactly the San Fernando Valley looked like in relation to the rest of L.A. A trip to the Encino Library left me only partially satisfied. But, by purchasing the Southern & Central California Atlas and Gazetteer, I finally understood the boundaries of the valley, the configuration of the mountains separating the two major portions of L.A., and the logic of travelling "West" to Encino from the rest of L.A. on the 101 without falling into the Pacific Ocean. This is a great resource for anyone wanting to know more about the geologic and geocultural configuration of the southern half of California. Should I find an equal curiosity about the northern half of the state, I'll be sure to buy the companion volume. And some day, I'll even donate my copy to the Encino Public Library (which is a great place, by the way; they just didn't have this terrific atlas).

4 out of 5 stars Not a standard road guide.......2005-06-20

This is not the book you want to take with you if you are navigating the CA freeways or surface streets. I use it solely for backwoods trips into the Sequoias and the Kern Valley, and even then, it can be a little frustrating to a novice. I use AAA maps as a first resort, and this as my second (last) resort.

Also, all of the elevations are in meters, which isn't what I'm used to, but it might be a standard for hiking that I'm not aware of...?

    2 out of 5 stars Okay, I guess.......2003-10-21

Well, I have never been too impressed with this atlas. I fell in love with the beautiful Benchmark & rarely look back. The dirt roads in Delorme look like hiking trails, the book splits California into 2 sections, paper is weak quality. It will do in a pinch, but I would rather have my 'REAL map book'.

5 out of 5 stars The 'Orange Map Book' Rocks.......2001-07-24

The Southern and Central California Atlas and Gazetteer by DeLorme always travels with me on my frequent road and rock-hounding trips in SoCal. These maps are a cross between road maps and topo maps and may or may not be what you need. If you want a standard road atlas, you will probably find the contour lines and dirt road details distracting. For these folks I'd recommend Thomas Bro's California map book or a trip to AAA. For folks who know what 7 1/2 minute quadrangle they'll be exploring, I suggest you visit the USGS map sales room at the Menlo Park office [it's self-serve...I always spend at least 3 or 4 hours pouring over the topos] and find the specific quadrangle you need. I generally use this atlas on trips when I'm going to visit areas I've never been to before. I need more details than the standard road atlas offers, but I usually don't buy the USGS topos for an area unless I intend to go back and spend some time at that location. This is the atlas that guides me when I first visit a new rock-hounding site. My friends and I refer to the atlas as the 'orange map book' since the old editions had an orange cover. I'm on my third copy [but I keep my older trashed copies for all the annotations I've made in them]. As any experienced map user knows, no one set of maps will work for all purposes. I recommend you add this atlas to your map reference library.
