This book is a necessary addon for the RPG, so it must be purchased. It add some good stuff and all the spells.

1 out of 5 stars Mistaken Identity.......2007-01-11

As any WOW fan would know it is an online world full of advantture and role playing. The world is complex and difficult to learn for a newbie. So a book on how to navigate this complex world, full of hints and tips would be very helpful. Even at the heavey price of this book! Well this book with its hardcover and hundreds of pages of information does not have anything in it about the online role playing. It is printed as a optional board game for people who prefer playing a dundeons and dragons scenerio. This book is very misleading in its content and worthless to the online gaming fan.

4 out of 5 stars Good...but one small thing..........2006-02-07

I won't go into a detailed review here as those above have covered it quite well and I don't want to end up repeating what was said, but there was one small problem I did have...in the magic items second set items from the MMORPG were mentioned...but strangely enough not all the basic suits were covered. Where is the Dreadmist, the Wildheart, etc. Even the tier I epics are not covered (which I can accept that one),but the other zero tier's should have also been there. But again this is a small problem in what is otherwise an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars A solid 'rules crunch' supplement.......2005-12-27

More Magic and Mayhem adds magical, alchemical, runic, and technological options to the World of Warcraft RPG. Other than the occasional editing gaff and one minor annoyance, it's a great buy. Note that this is NOT a stand alone role playing game. If you do not own the World of Warcraft RPG (the hardback, not the PC game), it is pretty useless on its own. The rest of this review assumes that the reader is familiar with the (hardback) World of Warcraft RPG.

There are three new classes: The Inscriber is an Arcanist variant that can use individual Runes. The Witch Doctor is a Healer variant that has special abilities (cheesily labeled 'Mojo') that enable it to create especially potent magic potions. The RuneMaster emblazons Runes on his body to augment it in various ways, and can also cast Runes from Rune Patterns. The class concept is utterly opposite of a typical Dungeons and Dragon's Monk, but outside of casting Runes the class abilities are similar: extra damage from unarmed strikes, fast movement, immunity to disease, extra attacks during a round but each attack is at a -2 to hit, etc... etc... The main difference is that a Runemaster has a list of special abilities to choose and may pick one at level 1 and every 3 levels after.

There are four prestige classes. The Argent Dawn Templar sacrifices class abilities in gained from previous classes in order to gain powerful new abilities. The Enchanter captures the energies released when a magic item is destroyed and can use that energy to add new abilities to other items. If your high level party has three dozen +1 magic items lying around, he can turn them into a pile of scrap metal and a +5 magic item in a matter of hours. The Ley Walker uses the ley line energy that crisscrosses the universe. She can grant herself fast healing for a few rounds, spontaneously cast dimension door or teleport, use a small number of metamagic feats without using a higher spell slot, and change any damaging spell to do half of its damage as 'ley' damage - which cannot be resisted. The Steam Warrior specializes in piloting Steam Armor.

There's a nice selection of new feats. Most revolve around runes and runecasting or the new rules for Alchemy. The Alchemy section has dozens of new concoctions an alchemist can create. They offer substantial benefits - +4 to an ability for an hour, recovering 6 levels of spell slots, invisibility, healing 8d6 damage. On the other hand, using the Craft (Alchemy) rules from the main book means that the typical PC or NPC that does alchemy work will require a week or two to craft a very simple elixer and months to put together a complex one.

The Runes introduced into the book all fall into categories called Rune patterns. The Inscriber class learns individual runes just like spells. The RuneMaster class attunes himself to one pattern at a time (more than one pattern at a time with feats), and can cast any rune within his attuned rune pattern by spending a spell slot of the corresponding level.

The spell section introduces a new action type to the game, a 'Swift' Action. A swift action is like a Dungeons and Dragons free action, but a PC can only make one per round. Some spells can be cast as swift actions. A small variety of new spells are introduced.

The magical item section is huge. The technological item section is nice, but it would have been nice to see something nearly as big as the magic item section. Technological 'Mods' add technological features to existing items, like rapid reload for firearms, vibrating blades, and armor that shocks those that touch it.

The last bit delves into a new system for determining the capabilities and features of steam armor. These rules replace the ones in the World of Warcraft book. (That is my annoyance with the book, which I mentioned at the beginning. I dislike when a new set of rules just ignores the previous set, instead of building upon it.) They cover such things as passenger compartments, extra shielding, adding hit points, etc... etc...
My only other pet pieve for this section is that size Large and Huge steam armor boosts the wearer's Strength by +10 and +15, respectively. I would think it more logical to provide independent Str scores for the armor once it reached a certain size. Goblins are among the foremost Steam Armor builders on Azeroth, and their -2 racial Strength penalty make them a poor choice for Combat Steam Armor pilots.

The only thing I hoped for but did not see was rules for the creation of Phlogiston, the special fuel many Warcraft technological devices require. Apparently 'Magic & Mayhem' details its creation, but this book does not.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Companion Volume, but journeyman errors abound.......2005-12-07

As a freelance RPG writer with very little actual printed work under my belt (so many unprinted, but paid for, products... *sigh*), I know that my opinion on such things is not often asked for, but here in this review I will give it, nonetheless. Simply and objectively put, this is a solid, well designed supplement. It contains nothing that supercedes the original Magic and Mayhem too terribly, although it does reprint some items whose creation methods and overall effects have changed between V3.0 and V3.5 "fantasy roleplay" (Just say it, D&D). The reprints are useful, however, and well described. The feats are, by and large, balanced and well composed, as are the spells (finally, Mages can use Firebolt!). While I personally would have added rules to the Core Classes for such things as the Paladin's new Seal spells (making them class abilities instead of wasting precious spell slots on them), or made Enchantment a series of Feats on the same level as Alchemy (thus allowing any character with the inclination to become an Enchanter), the methods used here are stable enough to be adapted to just about any game.

However, this book, much like the new edition of the WoW RPG, suffers from journeyman level editorial and proofreading mistakes that, honestly, should have been caught - a simple spell check would have done it. Page 196, for instance, the word "at6" in the Exploding Sheep description would have become the appropriate "at" had the body text been spellchecked. Also, much like the new WoW book, stylistic errors are also present in a good many places, such as a style type marker for the Shaman/Witch Doctor 2nd Level Spell list being retained instead of the proper style being implemented. Widows and Orphans - hanging sentences or "abandoned" words and sentences - are not as prevalent in this text as in others, but are still there. I admit I haven't been looking for it very hard, but thus far, I have not seen the customary "Page XX" reference.

A solid book, with some very easily-caught (at least I would have thought so), mistakes. Overall, I'm very impressed by it.

4 out of 5 stars Full of new features, but it's not enough for Warcraft yet.......2005-08-12

This book is cool and it covers well almost everything he intends to (I just found the Rune Spell list to be too short, but they put in there rules to create new ones). The new spells are funny and very concordant to Warcraft. My critics are not aimed to this title in particular, but to all the titles of Warcraft, that left in blank the description of some parts of the story and some parts of the world. The majority of the lore people have comes from the previous games and the MMORPG instead of the RPG books and the novels. I like very much the Warcraft ambience and I think people at Sword & Sorcecy should give priority to the descritive books rather then the rule books.

5 out of 5 stars Very Inspiring.......2004-05-14

I just finished reading this book and am ready to read it again. I thought it was wonderful. Yes, she talks about the trips her family took all over the world, but she also mentions how to make that possible. It wasn't because they were rich or extravagant. It was because they were compassionate and selfless and gave of their time to serve others. If you really *read* the book you will see that you do not have to take trips around the world to be able to be a joyful mother. The best part of the book, in my opinion, is the very last section where she talks about 12 ways to reduce stress and actually *be* a joyful mother. She gives challenges to help you along the way. If you stop reading in the beginning of the book, you would miss the truly helpful part.

I loved the entire book. I kept reading parts aloud to my husband and he enjoyed it as well. I have already suggested this book to friends who have also enjoyed it and I will continue to suggest it. I found it very uplifting and motivational.

2 out of 5 stars Totally lame.......2004-04-21

I should have known to stop reading when one of the author's first suggestions for lowering stress was to hire someone to do my housework for me! I guess if I had written a bunch of best-selling books and had a super-successful husband, I could do that! All of her stories seemed to have something to do with a trip overseas, a remodeling project in her house, or her husband who worked for the President in Washington, D.C. It almost felt as though she was teasing her reader - as if to say, look how well travelled and wealthy you must be able to gather we are. I wouldn't recommend this book to any other mothers I know who are hoping to find more joy in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite books.......2004-01-03

This is a book I go back to again and again. It always touches me. Have you ever read something and thought to yourself, "Yes, I can be a joyful mother. I can do this. And I can do it really well." That's how I feel when I read this book. Reading this book also reminds me how grateful I am to be a mother.

I don't think it's true this book is unrealistic at all. Linda writes about trips to foreign countries where her family helped the people there. They also gave up their Christmas to be able to afford it one year. Her stories about the trips aren't to say that's what everyone needs to do. They are there to illustrate certain points. They are very inspiring.

I think it all comes down to what your perspective is. Those who read the book looking to be inspired and have a postive outlook, these moms will benefit. If you are looking for reasons to complain you will find fault in the book and look for ways to say why the information can't help you.

It's a wonderful book and I HIGHLY recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars take the good.......2003-07-31

Yes, the lifestyle differences can be hard to get past. No, I can't climb mountains in foriegn countries right now- but we do share the thread of motherhood. The key I see is that we all have to find what works best for us and our families, learn and incorporate ideas that have worked for others. Linda Eyre has made her life work, with nine kids, with a career, with a supportive husband, with a temper. She has weaknesses and strengths just as I have weaknesses and strengths, she has wishes and hopes and dreams, she has sassy children that don't like to pick-up after themselves- just like all of us. We can't expect any one book to have the answers for us personally, we have to do some of the work too. Linda just shares her insights and some pretty good ideas and thoughts that she has tried and they worked. I quite liked knowing that yes, she may be "an expert" parent, but she still has trials and life is hard from time to time. I will take the good that spoke to me in this book and probably read it again and again as my children grow and our trials change.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2003-06-19

A friend shared this book with me and I recommend it to my friends. The ideas Linda Eyre shares are great inspiration to my own family traditions.

Magic Marker Mustache Mayhem and Other True* Stories is a collection of hilarious short stories chronicling the everyday odysseys of a modern day gladiator** named Mac. Although each story is separate, they are woven together like an intricate tapestry or a fine rug, like an Oriental rug . . . Perhaps even a Persian rug . . . but it's probably still more like a tapestry anyhow, so never mind the whole rug thing.

On each of his epic misadventures a colorful collection of friends and family create Herculean obstacles for Mac every step of the way. You will cheer for Mac as he fights the forces working against him . . . his disparaging mother, spoiled but loveable fiancée, borderline psychotic roommate, cheapskate cousin, super-macho friends, pompous boss, apathetic coworkers, a naughty wizard named Troy and many more

      * All stories are 100% completely true recollections with absolutely no embellishment, whatsoever. I promise. ** Library Technical Assistant II

This is a well written adventure story with in the inevitable scrapes in which a little magic comes in to play to recover . Book Description

Written by four girls and their moms (and illustrated by the girls), Magic, Mystery and Mayhem was written to help others start mother-daughter book groups and keep them fun and exciting.

Written from personal experience after years of being together as a group, this book was written for both moms AND daughters. It combines hundreds of practical ideas for running a book group with personal reflections from the authors. It answers such questions as:

--How do you choose books, and what do you do when the book you want doesn't get chosen?

--How do you get young girls excited about participating in the discussion?

--What do you do when the moms try to talk the girls out of a book they all want?

--What activities are appropriate for different ages?

--How many members should you have?

The final section, "Book group for a year", outlines complete book group meetings, including food, activities, and discussion questions, for 12 of the authors' favorite books.

Proceeds from the sales of this book are shared with three Seattle nonprofit literacy groups. This book was written primarily as a service project, to help all children learn to love reading.

5 out of 5 stars Magic, Mystery and Mayhem.......2000-12-20

This book is for anyone who wants to read with children - their own children, their grandchildren - or even the neighbors' children. Although it does have strategies for building a book club, it also has tips for building a reading relationship between one adult and one or two kids. For instance, the book gives ways to read books that have some disturbing events in them - such as any book dealing with the holocaust will have. Don't get me wrong - it isn't all serious, but discussing serious issues is very possible with young readers and this collabortive team lets us know how to do that.

If all parents read with their children in this way, we would have a nation of amazing adolescents on their way to becoming fine leaders and thinkers. Now - THAT'S a thought. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: Review - first not registered.......2000-12-20

This book's title should not scare off a mom or daughter who feels she doesn't have time or inclination to start a book group. Its content is great inspiration for reading with your own child or a child you care about (regardless of gender). For instance, there are some very good thoughts on how to help a child handle potentially disturbing or scarey parts of an otherwise enjoyable book. Also, the reviews in the last chapter are really meaningful as a suggested reading list.

With the above in mind, I have suggested this to friends in my generation (as a grandparent) as well as to young parents and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Magic, Mystery and Mayhem.......2000-12-12

This wonderful gem should be publicized everywhere in the USA. Not only does it include practical suggestions for the mechanics of starting a parent-child book club, it also shines with whimsy and freshness. Reading this book is like conversing with friends whose good senses of humor temper problem solving and strengthen their relationships. Sidebars let us see the uniqueness of the members of this collaborative team, and the book reviews by these young girls reveal such perception and kindness. I am giving it to friends - young and old - throughout the year 2001.

Westbridge High is having a horrible football season, and it doesn't help that they have a scallion -- a smelly vegetable -- for a mascot. So when Salem accidentally ends up on the football field one night and the team flinally wins, someone gets a great idea. Why not make Salem the new mascot?

Why not, indeed? Salem rather likes riding around on a satin pillow and having football players at his beck and call. In fact, he's just too good for the Fighting Scallions. He should be the mascot for a real team, like the one at Old Ivy Dominion, the local college. The only problem is Old Butch, the bulldog. He already has the job, and he's not giving it up...at least, not without a flight.
