This book is a comfort to all who have gone through horrible stressful situations and will help with thought processes of how to get through a tough situation. Excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Book.......2007-08-31

The Kent family story is tragic. Carol Kent's ability to relate her Isaac to anyone else's Isaac strikes the heart with honesty and truth. I purchased this book to share with a struggling friend, but wanted to read it first... I'm so glad I did. And my friend... has now purchased this book for a friend of hers. You will "think" when you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Relinquishing Your Isaac on the Altar.......2007-07-30

"When I Lay My Isaac Down" is the story of the desperate response of Carol and Gene Kent when they received the news that their son, Jason Paul, had been arrested for first degree murder.

Carol is clear and open in communicating the pain they have suffered through this tragedy. Feelings of hurt, shame, guilt, and unspeakable horror left them devastated.

Surrounded by a support group of "stretcher bearers" who offered quiet encouragement and words of comfort, and very real practical help as Carol, Gene, Jason Paul, and his wife April lived through their sorrow and bereavement.

Carol's writing resonates with hope, as she shares their story and the stories of others who also have met loss and trauma. These are stories of love, redemption, and reconciliation in times of crisis.

Each chapter closes with some questions for reflection on God's enduring, unconditional love. Responding to these in writing may help the reader learn to interpret the mysteries between the strange providential circumstances allowed by God and what we know of Him.

Carol's challenge is to change the way we think about personal challenges. She offers eight power principles to help in the process of your personal crisis, your Isaac, and your offering on the altar.

Compassion, comfort, and caring describe Carol and her book "When I Lay My Isaac Down." A Poignant and Memorable Chronicle of Tragedy and Triumph.

5 out of 5 stars Hope in spite of devastating circumstances.......2007-07-16

Carol Kent has written a book from her heart that has helped many of my family and friends deal with loss of a loved one or extremely difficult and sad circumstances. Book Description

From one of our most admired cultural critics (“A marvelous, canny writer”––Terry Castle, London Review of Books), thirty-one essays on some of the most influential artists of our time––writers, dancers, choreographers, sculptors––and two saints of all time, Joan of Arc and Mary Magdalene. Among the people discussed: Italo Svevo, Stefan Zweig, Simone de Beauvoir, Marguerite Yourcenar, Joseph Roth, Vaslav Nijinsky, Lincoln Kirstein, Jerome Robbins, Martha Graham, Bob Fosse, H. L. Mencken, Dorothy Parker, Susan Sontag, and Philip Roth.

What unites the book is Acocella’s interest in the making of art and in the courage, perseverance, and, sometimes, dumb luck that it requires.

Here is Acocella on Primo Levi, a chemist who, after the Nazis failed to kill him, wrote Survival in Auschwitz, the noblest of the camp memoirs, and followed it with twelve more books . . . Hilary Mantel, the aspiring young lawyer stuck on a couch with a chronic and debilitating illness, who asked herself, “What can one do on a couch?” (well, one could write) and went on to become one of England’s premier novelists . . . M. F. K. Fisher, who, numb with grief over her husband’s suicide, dictated to her sister the witty and classic How to Cook a Wolf . . . Marguerite Yourcenar, the victim of a ten-year writer’s block, who found in an old trunk a draft of a forgotten novel and finished the book: Memoirs of Hadrian . . . George Balanchine, who, after losing his family at age nine, survived the Russian Revolution, escaped from the Soviet Union at twenty, was for five years house choreographer for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, came to the United States with the promise that he could set up a ballet company, and had to wait another fifteen years before being able to establish his extraordinary New York City Ballet . . . And Acocella on Mary Magdalene and Joan of Arc reminds us that saints in the service of their visions–like artists in the creation of their art–draw power from the very blows of fortune that might be expected to defeat them.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful discovery.......2007-08-09

I have greatly enjoyed this selection of essays. Ms. Acocella brings forth what it takes to be an artist in this modern world. Not only that, but she rescues some obscure artists and makes the reader know more about them by providing a glimpse into their lives and work. Ms. Acocella's writing is fluent and makes for easy and entertaining reading as well.

5 out of 5 stars Artistic Essays That Count.......2007-04-10

The essays on modern dance in America are particularly outstanding. Ms. Acocella writes with passion and knowledge. Many of her observations are succint yet sympathetic. They inform the book with a compassion for the individual artist's struggle to define his or her art; something not readily available in much of what passes for criticism these days. Her essay on Marguerite Yourcenar, the French writer who lived in Maine for much of her life, literally jumped off the page for me. No one who reads this book will be disappoited.

5 out of 5 stars An inpiration to all creative people.......2007-03-22

Twenty-eight Artists and Two Saints: Essays.

This book is an inspiration to all creative people who have struggled with themselves and consequently their work. Better than any creative-self-help book, this brilliantly accomplished collection of essays, gives wonderful insights with amusing anecdotes into the live of artists. It is a study in problems that all artists face, whether they are writers, dancers, artists or saints.
About writing this book, the author says:" My concern is the pain that comes with the art-making, interfering with it, and how the artist deals with this......What allows the genius to flower is not neurosis, but its opposite, "ego strength", meaning amongst other things, ordinary Sunday- school virtues, such as tenacity, and above all the ability to survive disappointment."
Amongst the artists she discusses are; Stefan Zweig, Primo Levi, Vaslav Nijinsky, Bob Fosse, Susan Sontag, Louise Bourgeois, Philip Roth, and Joan of Arc -an eclectic selection of gifted and talented people, who through their work, and our contact with them, have contributed in some way, to inspiring our lives.

5 out of 5 stars The creative life sympathetically examined .......2007-02-18

I have read a number of the essays in this collection and found them to be informative, insightful and at times, eye- opening. Acocella often chooses subjects who are not that well known , and who she feels have been neglected. Two of the novelists she writes about here, Joseph Roth and Hilary Mantel were little known to an American audience. But the essays I have read and very much enjoyed are those she has written on Stefan Zweig, and Saul Bellow. I also read with great interest her critical review of a biography on James Joyce's daughter, Lucia, one which Acocella feels makes exaggerated claims for Lucia's influence on her father's work. Another outstanding essay here is the one on Primo Levi who Acocella clearly believes is one of the great moral heroes of the century. Acocella has a real feeling for the struggles involved in the literary and artistic, the creative life. She often reveals a special kind of sympathy with her subject. And this is one of the things which makes her writing, to me anyway, so likeable. One feels the writer herself is a very understanding and considerate person, one whose own creative effort is diligent, caring, and intuitively wise.
I have not read all this collection but from what I have and know of the work of this writer I would recommend it strongly.

The Problem of Pain answers the universal question, "Why would an all-loving, all-knowing God allow people to experience pain and suffering?" Master Christian apologist C.S. Lewis asserts that pain is a problem because our finite, human minds selfishly believe that pain-free lives would prove that God loves us. In truth, by asking for this, we want God to love us less, not more than he does. "Love, in its own nature, demands the perfecting of the beloved; that the mere 'kindness' which tolerates anything except suffering in its object is, in that respect at the opposite pole from Love." In addressing "Divine Omnipotence," "Human Wickedness," "Human Pain," and "Heaven," Lewis succeeds in lifting the reader from his frame of reference by artfully capitulating these topics into a conversational tone, which makes his assertions easy to swallow and even easier to digest. Lewis is straightforward in aim as well as honest about his impediments, saying, "I am not arguing that pain is not painful. Pain hurts. I am only trying to show that the old Christian doctrine that being made perfect through suffering is not incredible. To prove it palatable is beyond my design." The mind is expanded, God is magnified, and the reader is reminded that he is not the center of the universe as Lewis carefully rolls through the dissertation that suffering is God's will in preparing the believer for heaven and for the full weight of glory that awaits him there. While many of us naively wish that God had designed a "less glorious and less arduous destiny" for his children, the fortune lies in Lewis's inclination to set us straight with his charming wit and pious mind. --Jill Heatherly

Book Description

Why must humanity suffer? In this elegant and thoughtful work, C. S. Lewis questions the pain and suffering that occur everyday and how this contrasts with the notion of a God that is both omnipotent and good. An answer to this critical theological problem is found within these pages.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Simple but Poweful Argument.......2007-09-19

C.S. Lewis offers a brilliant defense of Christian theism despite the pain in the world in this brief book. Combining sharp thinking and excellent prose, this book is highly recommended for Christians and non-Christians alike.

Lewis's arguments are similar to many theodicies (defenses of God's existence despite suffering) developed by great Christian thinkers past and present. Man's suffering is in fact a result of free will, not an original creation of God. And suffering continues to result due to the evil wills and deeds of men. As Lewis observes, "When souls become wicked they will certainly use this possibility to hurt one another; and this, perhaps, accounts for four-fifths of the sufferings of men." If men are to have any significant free will at all, the bad consequences of evil deeds must be allowed.

This, of course, leaves the problem of so-called natural evil. Lewis contends that such evil and pain are necessary for our own repentance. In order to recognize our sins and ask God for forgiveness (and thus restore the proper relationship between created and Creator) we humans must be awoken with pain and suffering. Pain shatters the notion that what we have is ours and is good enough.

The Problem of Pain, despite its brevity, covers a great deal of ground, including a defense of the doctrine of the fall and the doctrines of heaven and hell. All throughout, Lewis's writing style is accessible and convincing. For a powerful defense of Christian theism in the face of a cruel world, "The Problem of Pain" is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "The full acting out of the self's surrender to God therefore demands pain".......2007-07-13

"Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself."

Another serious and powerful work in a long series by C.S. Lewis: why must we suffer, mentally and physically? He hits on subjects we all struggle with. Lewis detests the doctrine of hell, but it is written, so it must be discussed. The chapter on animal suffering is fascinating. The only chapter that led me to question his words is on man's fall.

On human wickedness: "A God who did not regard this with unappeasable distaste would not be a good being. We cannot even wish for such a God----it is like wishing that every nose in the universe were abolished, that smell of hay or roses or the sea should never again delight any creature, because our own breath happens to stink."

On saving grace: "The dangers of apparent self-sufficiency explain why Our Lord regards the vices of the feckless and dissipated so much more leniently than the vices that lead to worldly success. Prostitutes are in no danger of finding their present life so satisfactory that they cannot turn to God: the proud, the avaricious, the self-righteous, are in that danger."

By the Lord's love we suffer; this strengthens, and it also keeps us on the straight and narrow. If we are to look for easiness, then we are to look for less love. It is for our sake.

"The full acting out of the self's surrender to God therefore demands pain: this action, to be perfect, must be done from the pure will to obey, in the absence, or in the teeth, of inclination. How impossible it is to enact the surrender of the self by doing what we like,..........."

After finishing the book, a thought on heaven came to my mind:
The differences are what makes up a community whether here or in heaven: God has created us after a time where all was God (but that is no more!); we are all unique parts to a puzzle. He needs us all back to complete it----to rejoin our family in heaven; it pangs Him that many will not make it, and choose to ignore their created purpose, because they have surrendered to the self and not to the Lord. Once all was God, but after the creation all has changed; we are asked to be with God because we are of God. We are distinct here on earth, but the maximum distinction awaits us in heaven, to be reunited with our Creator.

Wish you well
Scott

5 out of 5 stars Problem of Pain.......2007-05-30

Excellent book by C. S. Lewis. Used for adult Bible Study discussion group.

4 out of 5 stars The Problem of Pain in its Right Context.......2007-05-01

Pain is real, just as sorrow, death, and wickedness. Your becoming a Christian will not encapsulate you away from it. Christ did not promise that in the first place. But there are reasons why pain happens, as much to Christians as non Christians, and we should reach a better understanding of the circumstances in which we live, so that we can apprehend the promises that are envolved through that pain. Everyone is to pick up a cross at childbirth, but whether you follow Christ with it depends only on you.

This book won't be the treat that 'Mere Christianity' was. It's more philosophical; it assumes the reader is a Christian and has some knowledge of Scripture. But nevertheless, everyone can follow his thinking and it will all make sense. About 160 pages, it has chapters of between 10 and 20 pages, and frames the problem in its right context before reaching his conclusion at the end of the book. This is not a make-you-feel-good (dumb) self-help book. It's a make you understand book.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing Tackling of the Issue.......2007-04-15

The first book of CS Lewis I read was "Mere Christianity" and I was profoundly stunned by how effective and witty he could be in his explanation of Christianity and Christian doctrine. So it was with eagerness that I devoted myself to the reading of this book.

And I was not disappointed in the least. The problem of pain is tightly linked with that of evil, in a world supposedly created and led by God. This is one of the most common, and most important, issues in theology, and I dare say, in everybody's life, provided they're somewhat curious about the world they live in. Justifying God on the counts of evil and pain is called theodicy, if I'm not mistaken, and that is what Lewis does in this book, but he does much more.

He deals with the basic problem I just mentioned, how could there be a good God when we live in such a wretched world, but he goes further and treats the human nature as "fallen", and that in a very interesting manner, not your silly Adam & Eve story taken literally (and by "silly" I don't mean the actual myth of Adam & Eve, just the literal taking of it).

Lewis tackles even such a complicated issue as animal pain and the condition of animals in Christianity. That shows quite some bravery.

One chapter is devoted to Hell, and another to Heaven, and either are really amazing prowess of theology. I'm no specialist of theology, but Lewis has a true gift in explaining of all this in a very clear fashion. He truly makes theology a thrilling matter!

After having read "Mere Christianity" and "The Problem of Pain", I'm absolutely convinced that I will get to read everything he wrote on theology, Christianity, and the likes. Regardless of your actual faith or lack thereof, you will find this book (or these books) worth your while. If you're interested in such things, please do yourself a favour and purchase those profoundly marvelous books.

Book Description

Dictee is the best-known work of the versatile and important artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha (1951-1982). A classic work of autobiography that transcends the self, Dictee is the story of several women: the Korean revolutionary Yu Guan Soon, Joan of Arc, Demeter and Persephone, Cha's mother Hyung Soon Huo (a Korean born in Manchuria to first-generation Korean exiles), and Cha herself. The element that unites these women is suffering and the transcendence of suffering. The book is divided into nine parts structured around the Greek Muses. Cha deploys a variety of texts, documents, images, and forms of address and inquiry to explore issues of dislocation and the fragmentation of memory. The result is a work of power, complexity, and enduring beauty.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Contemporary Art in Book Form.......2007-07-27

I read this book for my Asian American lit class and found it excruciating painful to read. It's certainly inventive, but that's the only positive thing I can say about it. It's difficult to read, there are no characters to love. The French side by side is misleading since the translations are not exact. I would not call this a book, but rather a piece of contemporary art: It has a great concept but isn't actually very nice to read.

5 out of 5 stars an amazing work.......2007-02-13

Dictee is a seminal work that has strongly influenced those poets lucky enough to have read it in the decades since it first appeared. It has had an underground reputation for decades, and now is beginning to be known to the mainstream. Yes, Dictee is rooted in the specifics of her family's immigrant experience, in the specifics of Korea and of America, in the specifics of gender, but it explodes across time, space and cultures, it transcends form, and ultimately it transforms the reader's consciousness of what can be done with writing and how you can perceive your life. I am tempted to say "if Cha had lived longer she would have been one of our major writers" but in fact she *is* one of the major writers of the second half of the 20th century, on the strength of this one work alone. I am delighted that Dictee is soon to appear in an addition with more of Cha's work.

2 out of 5 stars Intriguing, but inaccessible.......2006-05-30

This book is certainly written in a surprising format, and some of the passages are interesting. However, in attempting to follow Cha's thought from one part to the next, the thought itself disappears, leaving only a form.

This book is clearly written for a very narrow range of readers: recent female Korean emigres to America who also know French, as well as extremely knowledgeable scholars. Those who do identify in some way with Cha's biography do find a way into the text. The two articles I read as part of a study of this book were written by Korean American women, who did find something meaningful in Dictee.

I, however, was lost and confused most of the time by the often minimalist use of words, their repeating, and the sudden jumps in theme and style.

Buy this book only if you fit into the above mentioned category, or if you have much time and desire to struggle through a confusing work for a questionable reward.

5 out of 5 stars Reflection of woman.......2005-03-18

This book is confusing, frustrating, consuming and utterly breathtaking. It is a shattered mirror w/ pieces of riddles, poetry, cold photos of mothers and unsung heroines & nonsense; a true reflection of a woman. And like a woman, it takes work to truly understand its essence. Discovering what is hidden within Cha's deliberate chaos is like discovering the most sacred thoughts a woman possess. What makes this book unique is not so much the unconventional style but its dominating force to be absolutely nonconforming, such as the wildness that goes on in a woman's mind. It's not meant to be dissected and place into some kind of scientific formula of understanding. It's meant to be subjective, delicate and complex. Digest its intricacy and savor each page with delight. -Scribbling Ibis, 3/17/05

4 out of 5 stars Great book..........2004-11-06

This has to be one of the most unusual books I have read. The layout of the whole book is a peice of art by itself. I bought it using a coupon from UnderTag.com, so it was almost free for me.

You won't find a lot of technical mumbo jumbo here, but what you will find is a beautifully written book of inspirational stories to soothe the cancer-ridden soul. I tend to shy away from anything that has "chicken soup" on the cover, but this was given by a colleague and I've treasured it. Great gift to newly-diagnosed loved ones and friends.

If you have ever had a difficult time in your life, this is a good book for you. I read this book when I was having a very depressing time, a time where I was not sure I was going to make it out. This book, though, was a gateway for me. Since I don't have cancer, this book didn't inspire me in that way, but it did inspire me. I saw people that had a harder life then I did, and I realized that I would get through, that life would improve for me, and it has. :o)

Book Description

Take the natural path to mental wellness

More than 25 million Americans are treated with antidepressants each year, at a cost in excess of $50 billion. But the side effects of popular prescription drugs may seem nearly as depressing as the symptoms they’re meant to treat. Veteran yoga instructor Amy Weintraub offers a better solution—one that taps the scientifically proven link between yoga and emotional well-being as well as the beauty of ancient approaches to inner peace.

Addressing a range of diagnoses, including dysthymia, anxiety-based depression, and bipolar disorder, Yoga for Depression reveals why specific postures, breathing practices, and meditation techniques can ease suffering and release life’s traumas and losses. Weintraub also reflects on her own experience with severe depression, from which she recovered through immersing herself in a daily yoga routine.
Yoga for Depression is the first yoga book devoted exclusively to the treatment of these debilitating conditions. Amy Weintraub will help readers see their suffering and themselves in a vibrant new light.

4 out of 5 stars Yoga for Depression review.......2007-03-16

A well-researched, well-written book which has inspired me to commit to daily yoga. Amy Weintraub illustrates convincingly the benefits yoga can bring to a depressed person, without condemning conventional medicine. Instead she recommends a mixture of yoga, medication and talk therapy to suit each individual. This book is inspiring and gives me hope.

1 out of 5 stars the power to change comes from ones self - not in the heavens.......2007-03-08

I expected a more pure yoga approach to this most serious subject; depression. Some depression is caused by physical problems therefore I expected more YOGA positions; healing the body thus setting the stage to clear the mind. Finding the answers to problems of the mind is difficult enough without diverting the process in non reality based solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful and Well Written.......2007-01-14

As a long-time sufferer of depression and anxiety who has spent years on medication as well as counseling, this book provides a great deal of information on the healing nature of yoga and meditation. Ms. Weintraub certainly seems to understand the dark days firsthand and she offers positive advice on how a yoga practice can help quiet the mind as well as energize the body.

I did buy the book expecting it to have a full yoga program in it. But that is not the purpose of the book. It does have many yoga practices and they have been helpful but her intent is to explain the connection between our bodies and emotions and how yoga can help. She recommends taking a yoga class or using a book to truly learn yoga properly. She provides a fantastic list of resources at the end of the book for yoga websites, retreats, books, and cds.

I highly recommend this book and I am enjoying my new yoga adventure.

4 out of 5 stars Yoga for Depression.......2006-11-05

Interesting read in its attempt to tie contemporarily known facts about the etiology and treatment of depression to this time-honored and ancient practice. A worthwhile read for those who either want to try yoga under the tutelage of a certified teacher and as part of professionally supervised treatment as a means of improving and sustaining mood or adding it to more traditional treatment. Clearly, we have much more to learn about how yoga effects mood and the relationship of movement, breath, spirituality and self-discovery to depression.

5 out of 5 stars Gives Hope for New Practitioners.......2006-07-06

This book is fantastic! It gave me hope and inspiration to know that I could potentially beat my depression without being on medication for ever. Amy talks about a lot of different practices that are said to help with depression. I was a little dissapointed that some of them were not more fully explained, but this is a great starting point! With the knowledge I learned from this book, now I know what to research further and what questions to ask my yoga teacher. The references in the back of the book are also very helpful. I'm so greatful that I stumbled upon this book!

I worked for Hospice Austin and we used this book in our grief counseling groups. It is an excellent guide to the stages of the grieving process.

5 out of 5 stars Great grief survival tool.......2007-06-21

I buy this helpful grief guide for all those who are close to me who have the necessary grief steps to wade or wallow through.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, Succinct, and Invaluable Resource for Grief Recovery.......2007-05-26

I was given this book when my oldest brother was killed in 1995. When your heart is broken and your psyche is reeling from shock, pain, disbelief, and loss, it is too much to fathom to try to read a long, involved bunch of psychobabble. Granger Westberg's Good Grief is an easy read and truly confirms that the stages of grief through which one travels are, indeed, normal. He also tells you that there are times when you need to seek professional help to guide you through the grief process. In the past 12 years, I have given this book to many friends and acquaintances dealing with various types of loss. To a person, they've all told me how helpful this resource is and have passed it on to others. This book is truly a Godsend to the hurting.

5 out of 5 stars A Blessing and So Simple to Read.......2007-04-08

I was a counelor for over 20 years and have given this book or recommended this little book often. The author speaks truth in such a simple and kind voice. I've been helped by it and I know it has helped those I've introduced to the book. Grieving is sometimes compared to the dying process discribed by Eliz Kubler Ross. Not true. Grief is so very different. The tiny size of this book makes it perfect for a grieving person who can barely read anything and certainly nothing too complicated. It's simplicity makes it a great book for all people. It can also be read again and again as the grief process continues and the griever goes through many changes which feel unique to them but which are usually very common to all of us who have had cause to grieve.

5 out of 5 stars Good Grief.......2007-03-23

This small booklet describes the ten stages of grief and is written in such a manner that it is easy to read and the reader need not read each section in order. It is a helpful reference book that is given out at my church's community grief support group, "The Comfort Zone," which is why I purchased a quantity of them.

Product Description

How have I gone from being a defender of Christianity to an atheist? That is the question of this book. I was a Christian apologist set for the express purpose of defending Christianity from intellectual attacks. I was not afraid of any idea, because I was convinced that Christianity was true and could withstand all attacks. Now I turn that same intellectual muscle into questioning the things I formerly defended.

There are three major experiences that happened in my life that changed my thinking. They all happened in the space of about five years, from 1991-1996. They are: 1) A major crisis, 2) plus information, 3) minus a sense of a loving, caring, Christian community. For me it was an assault of major proportions that if I still believed in the devil would say it was orchestrated by the legions of hell.

Afterward I began to doubt the very things I had previously argued for. You see, I knew most of the arguments against Christianity, and as a philosophy instructor in a secular college I could debate both sides of most any argument. Anyway, I have told people time and time again that I could teach philosophy until I was blue in the face so long as I knew I had a loving, caring, and faithful Christian community to fall back on after my class is over. When that fell through the floor, the doubts crept in my life.

As the doubts crept in, my life changed, and so did my thinking. This book shares both the experiences that changed my life, and focuses on the ideas that I now reject. It is a look at Christianity from an insider's perspective from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Catharsis.......2007-09-22

Mr. Loftus has written a thorough treatise on why he rejected his evangelical Christianity and became and atheist. This is not solely a personal account of why he left the church and ministry, although it starts out that way. The book begins with a brief biography, explaining how he became so enamored of evangelical x-tianity that he eventually made the ministry his livelihood. It is particularly honest of Mr. Loftus to quote his early writings in these passages so the reader can see how thoughtful yet profoundly mistaken he was.

The remainder of the book is Mr. Loftus addressing some of the main problems of the Jesus religion and the Bible. He wants the reader to understand that he did not reject x-tianity so he could sin and not feel guilt--his was a thoughtful and scholarly admission that x-tianity cannot be a description of real historical events upon which a person should base her/his life.

If Jesus was a historical figure, about which no one can be certain, he did not perform miracles; he probably didn't die on a cross or tree; and he most certainly didn't arise zombie-like from the dead and scare gullible folk in Palestine before ascending to heaven. The Bible, Loftus comes to understand, is mythologic ramblings of superstitious peasants. The story of Adam and Eve is clearly a fable; there was no universal flood; people don't repent in a whale's gullet and then preach to Nineveh. The Gospels are clearly embellishments of an early god-man myth, the writers of which are clearly trying to convince other people to believe in their brand of x-tianity rather than trying to tell us of real events (to which they could not have been witnesses).

An important fact arises from Mr. Loftus' discussion--intelligent adults rarely becomes x-tians. The author, William Craig Lane, and most people who babble about x-tianity joined before they were thinking clearly (as adolescents), or were inculcated as children. An intelligent outsider would never buy all the baloney that is x-tianity.

After coming to these shocking conclusions, Mr. Loftus was left with no choice but to look at the world rationally and employ healthy skepticism as he re-created his entire world view. The bulk of Mr. Loftus' exegesis is lengthy quotations from John Hick, William Craig Lane, and many apologists from the InterVarsity Press (what a freakshow that place must be!). This is a highly recommended read for those who have the courage to examine the predominant superstition in the United States.

5 out of 5 stars the former and the weasel..........2007-09-04

One thing that both Christianity and Atheism show is that there seems to be no escape from dogmatism for the intelligentsia of all ages throughout the entire history of society. Organisation around ideas is the rule and not the exception within the scope of the human social experience. Case in point: these three sentences.

3 out of 5 stars LOL.......2007-08-17

Another laughable attempt to use logic where there is no bases for it.

You cannot prove or disprove God. This is the only truth.

The author by his own admission is jaded. Not because of truth, but because he had some bad experiences. He can doctor it up however he wants with as many words as he wants but that is the best summary of this book and ones like it.

5 out of 5 stars An honest and reasonable perspective........2007-08-17

John Loftus is a very intelligent and honest man. His transparency shines thru in this work, and his critique of the Christian faith as well as his reasoning for departing from it is clear and sound.

2 out of 5 stars Why I Rejected This Hypothesis.......2007-08-04

First off. Let me start out by saying that this book is some 'real tough sledding'. I almost put it down after around 70 pages, not because I disagreed with it, but because it broke down into an almost pointless discussion of philosophical ideas concerning the existence of God. You know, the kind of rantings that lead to almost no real conclusions. "I think, therefore I am". That sort of thing (my apologies to Msr. Descartes). You can tell this guy once bit into the fundamentalist taco just a little too hard. Trying to rationalize a belief in God using reason and logic, it appears he just gave up and said: "Nah, changed my mind".

I was hoping for a personal story about his experiences as a Christian and what events lead him to believe otherwise. Something to draw some compassion from the reader. Perhaps a little historical analysis to back it up. Trying to scientifically prove that there is no God is about as futile as proving that there is one. If the universe was created by a big bang, where did that bang come from? Perhaps some 'cosmic firecracker'? And what reality did that firecracker exist in? And what created that reality? And so on and so on. You can believe that God created our universe in a super-natural mayonnaise jar and be just as convincing!

I don't mean to put scientific inquiry down. I myself struggle with many of the same questions this author is asking. If I say I believe in God, but know full well that I have doubts, which I think everyone does, am I trying to fool God into thinking I am a 'true believer'? Wouldn't that be stupid given the belief that God is 'all-knowing'? Would God really want someone that dishonest? Is God really that hung up on us giving him 'glory and honor'? Why would he need such a thing from mere mortals as us? And why would he put so much at stake for us getting it wrong?

To be fair to the author, he does make some valid points. He states that an atheist is just a person who believes in one less God than a Christian, meaning to say that Christians reject God in many ways as well, just not the God of Christianity. His perception of the formation of early Christian beliefs as the outcome of ancient superstitions is very plausible. His use of informal logic, though sometimes flawed itself, is at least honorable. But then again, informal logic is, well, informal! Not something I would stake my values and life on.

I was going to give this book 1 star because it is a formidable read. You gotta be really determined to hack your way through this brackle to get anything out of it. But because there is some redeeming content as I mentioned before, I am upping it to 2 stars. But I would recommend to anyone considering this read, go elsewhere. Perhaps some other reader of this review can make a good recommendation?

Book Description

At a time that should have been considered the highlight of her career, Sheila Walsh admitted herself to the psychiatric wing of a Washington, D.C. hospital. Having worked for five years as cohost of The 700 Club, the years of treading water while trying to keep so much around her afloat and keep various plates spinning left her drowning in a hopeless sea of clinical depression. Despite her best efforts, she simply couldn't will herself out of it.

Now more than ten years later, Sheila understands what it's like to be wounded. It has been the passion of her heart to study what God's Word has to say about this and then share her liberty with other hurting souls. Divided into three sections (Healing, Spiritual Warfare, and Relationship), this book offers readers practical steps to not only receive the healing that God offers but also to maintain the ground that Christ has restored to them.

The Heartache No One Sees opened my eyes and helped me dig past the mask that I wear in order for others to think well of me. Instead of hiding behind a everything-is-fine mask, Sheila Walsh encourages us to be open to God's redemptive work, to be realistic about the needs that we have and to reach out to others who are also hurting and hiding. Sheila is a real person and very easy to get to know through her writing. I am so thankful for God's work through this book!

A book that brings encouragement, perspective and hope. I could not reccommend this book more strongly for people who have hit the wall and feel like their faith has failed them and their hope is waning.

I have had the distinct pleasure of buying 6 copies and giving them away as gifts.

I read it once and knew it had my name on it. I read the last page and turned right around and started it again. I am finding things I never saw the first time. It has been an amazing journey and an incredible comfort during my own Joseph Pit experience.

5 out of 5 stars Do You Have a Joseph Calling?.......2006-11-03

The Upside of Adversity delivers a much-needed message to a culture that seeks comfort, convenience, and ease. In this post-modern era we rarely hear that adversity builds strength, character, and a reliance on God. But some special people have a Joseph Calling on their lives. The author of this book, Os Hillman, is just such a person. In The Upside of Adversity he draws parallels between Joseph in the Bible and his own trials and tribulations which took him from a successful marketing career to his current global ministry of Marketplace Leaders [...].

In this book you will learn such powerful principles as, "The pathway to leadership almost always takes us through the valley of adversity." You will learn how that God often uses the "desert places" in our lives to speak to us. You will learn about the Judas Test, the Integrity Test, the Perseverance Test, and the Test of Success. You will also learn to identify and demolish spiritual strongholds in your life.

This is a book for any Christian who has experienced adversity in their lives. In other words, this is a book which every Christian should read. Everyone who lives in this fallen world will experience adversity. If you would like to change your adversity paradigm so that you can see the positives that can come from your pain, this is a book you should read. Those who have been blessed by reading Os Hillman's daily devotionals from Today God Is First (Destiny Image 2000) will not be disappointed by the insight and wisdom found in this powerful book.

5 out of 5 stars One of best books I have EVER read!.......2006-10-20

If you have ever said; "God, where are you?", or "God, why have you forgotten me?", or "God, why are you punishing me?", or "God, please take me home now!", this is a must read. For anyone who has been in an extended period of trial where nothing seems to work, and lots of things are going wrong, Os Hillman's book will give you tremendous hope and encouragement for the process and the future. You will see yourself on these pages, and you will also see David, Joseph, Paul, the other apostles and Jesus Christ himself. You will learn how your time of trial is actually a period of transformation from the old you to the new you that God is going to work through for his glory. You have been specifically chosen by God because he loves you and recognizes who you are and what your potential is. You are that precious and important to him that you have been selected to be refined by the fire, and go through God's training program in order that you might fulfill the destiny God has planned for you. Much as a caterpillar has to on its own struggle to emerge from its chrsyalis to become a beautiful butterfly, you will see how we have to struggle on our own through a similar process before we emerge as the beautiful creation God meant us to be. If you yourself or someone you know is going through an extended period of trail, buy this book. You will not regret it.
