Book Description
Wordoku is a cool combination of sudoku and wordplay—and it’s the hottest new craze among puzzle lovers. This massive collection, which follows on the success of the two earlier Big Books, will provide solvers with hours of fun. It features an amazing 900 wordoku, with grids in a variety of sizes: smaller 8x8s, standard 9x9s, and extra-hard 10x10s. The rules are simple, and almost exactly like sudoku—except with letters in place of numbers. Because the levels range from easy to brainbusting, everyone will find puzzles that are just challenging enough. Plus, when players are finished filling in the grid, they get to uncover a hidden word to complete the puzzle!
Customer Reviews:
Great fun but the book itself..........2007-03-20
This book has 8, 9 and 10-letter grids, which means there's something for every expertise level. My favorite is the 10-letter puzzles.
The only drawback is that because of the size of the book, it eventually falls apart. The pages in the middle came out. I now carry stacks of pages rather than the entire book. The publisher should definitely consider making this a spiral bound book.
Endless hours of fun and frustration........2007-01-09
If you like sudoku but tired of the numbers I strongly suggest getting this book. It's the same fun as sudoku but with the added twist of finding words within the puzzle. Go ahead and try it. You won't be disappointed.

The Not So Easy Sudoku!.......2007-01-31
This book is definitely not for the beginner. I would rank it at Green Belt level. I recommend "Totally Sudoku" by Penny Press that has mostly easy, and some moderate and challenging puzzles for the beginner.
not THAT easy, but still easy........2006-12-06
this is a good book the sudoku in this book can all be done logically and quickly, but i would start with white belt sudoku if you are looking for something that is VERY Easy. but otherwise this is a good buy.

Customer Reviews:
Great, HARD puzzles!.......2006-04-24
I have gotten other so called hard Sudoku books and found them too easy. This one will keep you going for a long time. It has lots of different types of puzzles with the ultimate being the 16x16 grid. I would give 4 1/2 stars because I wish it were on better paper. I make copies of the hardest puzzles on better paper that can take LOTS of erasing!
Not for beginners.......2006-03-25
Wonderful. No fluff in this book. It begins with some tricky ones that actually require several minutes to finish and gets downright hard after that. Some take hours, and often I just quit one puzzle and come back to it another day.
The various shapes/styles are a great break from the 9x9 norm. The 6x6 puzzles are absolutely vicious. Nothing like kids 6x6 sudokus that take an advanced puzzler seconds to complete. And I love the jigsaw shapes. Watch out for the 9x9 jigsaws!
There should be more advanced sudoku books like this. As recommended by others, this should not be your first foray into sudoku. But once you are hooked on the light stuff, this is a nice challenge.
This books makes Sudoku even more fun.......2006-02-25
If you like Sudoku but the puzzles seem to be getting dull, try the variants in this book. Different sizes and arrangements make new puzzles out of an old game.
Excellent book for the advanced Sudoku solver.......2006-02-02
First of all, I would definitely say that if you are just beginning to learn how to solve Sudoku puzzles, I strongly suggest that you do not buy this book. Instead, I would suggest a book which focuses almost entirely on the standard 9x9 Sudoku puzzles, and which starts with easy puzzles before progressing to more difficult ones. The Big Book of SuDoku 3 starts right out with difficult puzzles, and the puzzles only continue to get harder and harder as you continue.
If you are an experienced SuDoku solver who is able to solve all but the hardest 9x9 SuDoku puzzles without too much difficulty, or if you have grown a bit tired with the standard 9x9 SuDoku puzzle, this is a great book. For me, the most appealing feature of this book is that half of the 200 puzzles in this book are different from the familiar 9x9 Sudoku. While the Maxi (12x12) and Super (16x16) puzzles are just larger versions of the 9x9 puzzles, the Jigsaw, Duplex, and Triplex puzzles actually require the solver to use different solving techniques than are used for the regular puzzles.
Overall, I give this book 5 stars as long as you're up for the challenge. While this book may not contain quite the volume of puzzles as some others, the harder puzzles can take well upwards of an hour to complete, so this book will keep you occupied for a long time.
For the above average Sudoku Puzzler.......2005-12-15
I started doing these puzzles over a year ago and I became hooked. This book is for people who have been doing them a long time, or who know they will become addicted. If you are a true beginner I would suggest the second book in this series (has a bit easier puzzles to start with up to the mega challenging. You can spend hours on some of the hardest ones, but if you are a true puzzler, that is what you want.
Customer Reviews:
This Sudoku book is a day late and a dollar short.........2006-01-06
First of all,let me make one thing very clear.I am a big admirer of The Sterling Publishing Company. There is no equal to them in the number and high quality of books that they publish on puzzles.Check some of my other reviews on puzzle books and you'll find I've heaped praise on them for their efforts and accomplishments. However; everyone can have a 'bad hair' day.
The whole Sudoku scene took off here in May of 2005,in a little 'freebie' newspaper in boxes at transit stops.Over the next couple of months books started to appear in the bookstores.
I've written reviews on several of them and discuss what one should look for in a good one.First, there should be good coverage on the background of the puzzle, then good instructions on hints and methods for solving;particularly if one is just gettind started. Then the size of the grid should be at least 3"X3",preferably larger.By the way, The Toronto Star has just increased their grid from 31/2" to 5".Next,the paper should be much better than newsprint grade for ease of erasing. The puzzles should be graded in difficulty. One book I reviewed even gave completion times depending on skills.Another thing to consider is how flat the book lies as well as its size, particularly if you intend to carry it around. Finally ,there is the number of puzzles and the price.
Now what about this book.Competing books are flooding the shelves. If this book had come our in August or so ,it might not have been too bad. However,it has almost nothing in background or solving methods. The pages are too large, with 4 puzzles per page, and at this stage ,they're on the small size at 3".The puzzles are not graded and there are no time targets. The paper is not too bad, roughly typewriter bond grade. At 8"X10" it is too large to carry around and doesn't lay flat.
A couple of months ago books were coming out with 100-300 puzzles;last week I bought one with 1001 puzzles. So,about the only thing this book is 'with it' is that it has 944 puzzles.
In summary, this book is late arriving on the scene, nothing exceptional about it,several shortcomings and priced up there with others I would recommend over it.
Once again,I would reiterate that Sterling have published high quality puzzle books;and maybe Sudoku is just not their world. It's not that I don't think they couldn't do better ;it's just that they didn't.
"Thinking Inside the Box - No Math Needed".......2005-12-30
The Big Book of Sudoku Puzzles," Michael Rios, NY, Sterling Publishing, 2005 ISBN: 1-4027-3631-2, PC 320 pgs., (80 pgs. answers), 10" x 8"
Unknown 20 years ago, Sudoku ("single numbers") skyrocketed since 1984 as Nikoli Publishers (Japan) formalized rules for a 3 x 3 number grid composed of 9 boxes @ using 0-9 numerals but once within @ box & numerals 0-9 but once criss-crossing the grid. The 30 conferred numbers (varies 24-32) determines difficulty of finding & entering those 51 or so (49-57) which are absent. Not always conspicious, supplied numbers inscribe a symmetrical design.
"The Big Book...." consists of 944 puzzles, begins "easy" & progresses to "harder." The format of 4 (four) puzzles per page, each measuring 3" x 3" makes analyses, pencil entries & erasures (if needed) quite easy - and with practice, simple logic, (no math needed) insight develops to spot patterns & formations yielding clues to missing numerals (all answers in back of book). At inception, there is temptation to fill empty squares with every feasibility, - time consuming. In short order, identification of patterns leads to explicit techniques where speed evolves & notations are few. In high order Sudoku, one of several chosen possibilities which, as puzzle becomes more complete, may prove to be incorrect, thus designating the alternative to be genuine. The sole equipment needed is a lead pencil & eraser plus an inquisitive mind which tunes in logic stations. In you are browsing for challenging experiences in mathematics, this is not that book. However, it is a good, non-pornographic mind memory book that'll help ward off Alzheimer's & is warranted compatible with all iPods. Of many books on Sudoku, this is my favorite.

"Crossword lovers, move over!"USA Today. "Fiendishly addictive."Time. Everyone can enjoy them. You don't need to be a math whiz to solve them. You need only a pencil to play.

The Big Book of Su Doku #1 features 200 brand new puzzles, arranged in increasing order of difficulty, from the easiest "Mini Su Doku" puzzles up to the new 12 x 12 "Super Su Doku." It also contains tips and basic rules to get you started.

Hooked!!!.......2007-07-12
I got all three volumes. They are great. It starts you out slow and gets you to the harder stuff. I loved all three. If your not sure how it is done these books walk you through it. I got myself a set and a friend who thought she wouldn't be able to learn. Now she's hooked. They're great.
Perfect for Beginners.......2006-06-01
This book is very good for beginners. It begins with small puzzles. My [...] son enjoys completing the 4x4 and 6x6 puzzles. The puzzles become larger and more complicated as the book continues. Don't be intimidated by the 16x16 puzzles...they are much easier than they look.
Don't let this be your first book of Sudoku.......2006-01-22
The explanatory section at the start is not adequate for a beginning solver of Sudoku. More beginning examples were needed.
More beginning 4 by 4 and 6 by 6 puzzles are needed, for the beginning solver.
The spine of this book cracked within 2 days of usage; this book was cheaply made.
The paper is cheap; numbers from puzzles on the next page can be seen through the paper; very distracting for a solver.
The tricky puzzles (level 3) are arguably just as hard as the challenging puzzles (level 5) ; the computer program and/or Mr. Huckvale did a poor job of ranking these puzzles.
This book, in short, seems like a borderline hack-job, designed to cash in on the Sudoku craze.
Lots of easy puzzles (probably best for someone new to Sudoku).......2005-12-02
I was hoping this book would go in depth on sudoku logic, but it does not; however, there is a short section on how to play, with the thought of getting beginners going.
The puzzles in this book are very easy in my opinion. I don't think there is much of a difference between the "Easy" puzzles and the "challenging" puzzles, most can be solved in about 5 minutes or less. The only puzzles that usually take longer than 5 minutes are the "Super" sudokus, which are just as easy, sometimes easier, but much longer (mainly because the whole grid is 16x16 (with 4x4 subsets)).
Overall, the book is probably quite good for a beginner, but if you are an expert and looking for a good challenge, I would not recommend this book.
Excellent selection.........2005-11-09
This is a great book for both beginners and experts since it overs a wide variety of puzzles.. There are hundreds and they get increasingly harder.. The book is a nice size so easy to bring along. I often stick it along and take it to work everyday as it's the perfect thing to do on a long train ride.

The Big Book of Su Doku #2 is even bigger and more challenging than #1, with 250 puzzles including basic 9 x 9 grids, followed by "Super" and "Maxi" puzzles (12 x 12 and 16 x 16 grids) plus the devilish "Samurai Su Doku" and with-a-twist "Irregular Su Doku."

The Content is fine, paper quanlity is bad.......2006-11-07
I brought this book on my long flight to kill sometime. The letters are big and the book is fun. The only thing that I don't really like is the paper quanlity. It's coarse and pages are easy to fall out.
Sudoku.......2006-01-11
The Book of Sudoku 3 compiled by Michael Mepham
Published by: The Overlook Press, Peter Mayer Publishers, Inc. New York & Woodstock
Published in year 2005. 132pages
It is a puzzle book.
This Sudoku book is filled with puzzles rated easy to hard. They will strain your brain and sometimes leave you puzzled!
Sudoku is a new form of puzzles originated in Japan, which has just recently come out. The level of puzzles range from gentle to diabolical. The puzzles are 9 by 9 grids that are subdivided into 9 smaller grids of 3 by 3 squares. Each puzzle has only one solution.
Sudoku is the best kind of puzzle there is. Sometimes it is easy and sometimes it is hard. It is hard to put down. It keeps me awake; it helps me stay sharp and open-minded. I would definitely recommend this book to others. It is addictive and I find myself doing Sudoku during class, standing in line, and on the bus.
Another great Su Doku book - the big squares make this book good........2005-09-11
In his first Su Doku book, "The Big Book of Su Doku #1", Huckvale presented many Su Doku puzzles that varied in difficulty. From 4 x 4 squares to 6 x 9 squares to 9x9 squares to 12x12 squares. In this second book, he adds in jigsaw and Doubles, along with varied difficulties in the puzzles. The jigsaw and doubles aren't necessarily more difficult but it gives a nice twist, just something different. But the main reason I like Huckvale's books better than other Su Doku books I have seen, is that his squares in the puzzles are large. This means you can actually make tiny notes to yourself when trying to solve the puzzle. Compared this to other books where the squares are quite small and it makes it more difficult to make notes. Thanks for the big squares!

Customer Reviews:
Easy is tough, tough is easy.......2007-06-17
The Big Book of Sudoku for Dummies rates its puzzles as Easy, Tricky, Tough, and Diabolical. With enough patience, any sudoku puzzle, even one with only one initial number, can be solved. The Diabolical puzzles in this book, and in Heron's earlier collaboration with Edmund James ("Sudoku for Dummies") are in this category: they are truly (and trivially) diabolical. But whereas in the earlier Dummies book the Easy puzzles were mostly Easy, the Tricky were mostly Tricky, and the Tough were mostly Tough, in this volume, as the previous reviewer notes, these categorical assignments appear to have been made randomly.
As Wikipedia notes, sudokus of different difficulty "satisfy different psychological needs." Don't expect this book to satisfy your psychological needs. When you sit down with a puzzle from this book, you never know if it will take ten minutes or hours.
Big Disappointment.......2006-09-23
I have had reasonably good luck over the years with Dummies books, but this one, as I say, is a big disappointment. The instructions are minimal, and then the author leaves you to more or less "sink or swim" with his array of 600 puzzles. Even the easy ones are quite challenging, especially for a beginner such as myself. If you are new to Sudoku, or if you have gotten into it a bit but are still working to become reasonably competent, I definitely would not recommend this book. Look somewhere else for the guidance you need.
