Will Short is our favorite.......2007-04-29
Will Short is our family's favorite author on Sudoku's. This series of books from him is the best for taking in the car, etc. as it's compact yet the puzzles are big enough for writing.
i love sudoku.......2007-03-31
It is a good size book. I have bought a smaller book of sudoku, and gets too messy when you write numbers around the square.
Bought as gift for family member, they couldn't put it down........2007-02-12
Do be weary...these books immediately addict the readers. I gave this as a gift and it immediatly consumed him.
Its a good book with a quick intro for those that are unfamilar with the subject...and then scales puzzles according to your level.
This did lead to another gift quickly after for orther japanese number puzzles.
Sudoku for everyone.......2007-01-21
I love doing these puzzles so much I wish there were more than 100 in this book. I found the easy ones easy, but not ridiculously easy. I like the medium ones. I have not done the difficult yet, but I look forward to them. Even though there are only 100 puzzles in this book, it has taken me a while to work my way through it. Will Shortz is the best.

Great for Beginners!!.......2007-08-08
This book helped me figure out Sudoku, I'm a beginner. Looking forward to finishing more puzzles and getting to the next level. I'm addicted!
Not your average "easy" Sudoku!.......2006-07-24
This book offers more challenging puzzles than your average "easy" books. It was great for the addicted!
Well done.......2006-05-07
I bought (and eventually burned) another Sudoku book which had very inaccurately grouped puzzles. It's very first puzzle, supposedly "gentle", was in fact pretty difficult. I got very annoyed with the book.
By contrast, this Will Shortz book seems to have done a good job of ranking the puzzles. It's a very simple book. Well done. I've gotten hours of enjoyment from solving theses puzzles.
It is what it says it is, Easy........2006-05-03
This is a nice little book of puzzles. It is as it says it is, easy. Most of the entries have 30+ squares of the 81 with given numbers, so that filling out the remaining squares is a matter of simple logic. Although nothing but the elements of the game are provided as instructions, the ease with which the puzzles are completed helps the beginner learn some of the beginning logic behind doing them. I find I enjoy discovering the "tricks" of finishing these puzzles more satisfying than I would being told before hand what they are. Certainly I learn them more thoroughly by this method, because I have to intuit them; I actually have to understand the "why" behind the manuver. In my opinion this type of learning is inherently helpful in other tasks as well; that it is to say, transferable to ones life settings in other ways--although I have to admit I couldn't tell you specifically how or why. I think getting school age children involved in doing these types of puzzles would be a good idea, since it would help them learn the principles of logical thinking without the pain of word problems.
Hello .......can you say addicting........................2006-04-29
Not the best Sudoku book I own, but very addicting.

Book Description
Sudoku is the number-placing puzzle that is spreading across the world, engaging the minds of people of all ages. The rules are simple, you don't need to know any mathematics, all you need is logic.
Samurai Sudoku puzzles are like traditional Sudoku puzzles but with five interlocking Sudoku grids. This book contains 100 of these massive puzzles, including solutions. All the Samurai Sudoku puzzles in this book are symmetric.
The rule is the same: Each row, column and 3x3 box in each puzzle grid must contain the numbers 1-9 only once. The puzzles start with a few easy ones for warming up, but the majority of the puzzles are hard and can take hours to solve.
This book is for those who feel ordinary Sudoku puzzles are too easy or too quick to solve and want more challenging puzzles. If you solve two of these every week this book will last you a year!
Have fun!
Customer Reviews:
good book. .......2007-01-03
I found this book to be really fun. I bought it for my boyfriend's birthday, and we ended up altenating on the puzzles. The puzzles seemed a little too easy for both of us, so I purchased another similar book, with better results. On the whole, if you enjoy regular sudoku, but feel ready for a new challenge, this book may be just the right fit. If you have already gotten into samurai sudoku, the book may be too easy.
Takes Long Time ... But with Lots of Fun!.......2006-12-16
I totally recommend this book for those who want to take Sudoku puzzle a step further ... :)
Prefect for Sudoku addicts!.......2006-11-10
I love this book. It has traveled to many states with me. Great way to pass the time while waiting for flight connections.
My all time favorite sudoku puzzle book!.......2006-09-15
I find the samurai style sudoku very appealing. True, they are more time consuming -- safe to say possibly five times more time consuming! But you can always take a break between areas. They definitely don't all solve in the same direction -- sometimes you need to finish the four outer areas in order to have a chance at solving the inner one, other times the opposite is true. I like that the puzzles are arranged in consecutive difficulty as you advance through the book. I highly recommend this book to sudoku fanatics!
Different... but...........2006-06-15
Samurai Sudoku! Big. Intimidating. Multidimensional. Sudokus shooting out the corners of other sudokus.
Guess what. It's a gimmick. You know how long it takes to do one of these giant sudokus? Slightly shorter than it would take to do five separate easy sudokus. That's right. It's actually easier. Once you get used to the concept, which shouldn't take long, you realize that the overlapping grids actually provide more information, more data for solving the sudoku. Not harder, easier. I suppose, in theory, one could construct a giant sudoku where the clues were distributed in such a way that it could only be solved in a very particular order, but that would make it challenging in a tedious sort of way, not necessarily a clever thinking-differently sort of way.
For me, the biggest challenge of doing these giant sudokus was just altering my system of annotations, since there is more on the page, more things in the way, and my old system was getting things too muddled. Also, the squares have to be smaller, to fit more on a page, and so it just acts as a disincentive to scratching in notes.
That's okay though. I'm not knocking the giant sudokus. If you like them, great. They are absorbing and fun to see how quickly you can breeze through them. But, in general, I like the old 9 by 9 advanced level sudokus. All the sudoku variations are interesting in theory but I find that, for me at least, they ultimately are not improvements.
You know what would be the next step though, a serious step up? A 3D sudoku. I guess it would have to be on a computer so you could rotate it and solve the puzzle by breaking it down into various sagital and coronal slices. Has anyone thought of that yet? If not, I'm claiming it. You heard it hear, Uncle Stu, July 19th 2006.

I really like these bigger Sudoku puzzles, since the regular ones are a little too quick to solve. This book has enough puzzles to last you a looong time. The first book was great and this one looks like it's keeping up the same quality! Very good!

From the deceptively simple-looking kakuro puzzles to the added challenge of Killer Sudoku, these five new puzzle types will challenge, amuse, and delight. What are you waiting for?
Customer Reviews:
enjoyable sudoku variations.......2007-09-23
I really enjoy sudoku, kakuro (cross sums) and will shortz, so I was looking forward to this book and was not disappointed. Here you'll find Wacky Sudoku, in which you are plying with non-3x3 subgrids; Hyper Sudoku, in which there are 4 3x3 grids embedded within the usual puzzle and these must also meet Sudoku solving criteria; ABC Sudoku, sometimes called Wordoku -- these were not terribly challenging; Killer Sudoku, a combination of Sudoku and Kakuro; and Kakuro. There are 100 puzzles altogether. Size of the book is good, 6'x9" with nice big grids.
I'd buy it again.
Exercise your brain!.......2007-07-24
If you loved sudoku puzzles but you have done so many that they are not fun anymore, then these puzzles are what you need. Each type of variation starts out simple and gets more challenging with each puzzle. The size of the puzzles on each page make them comfortable to do. As with all Will Shortz books, the puzzles are well designed to develop your logic skills as you move up in difficulty. These are fun puzzles. Do one every day and keep your brain in optimal condition.
A welcome break from the routine.......2007-06-19
I started off in Sudokus with New York Post Sudoku 1: The Official Utterly Addictive Number-Placing Puzzle (New York Post Su Doku) and its sequels. Although these were great at first, at some point it just got old: there's only so much of interest you can do with nine digits in a nine by nine grid.
Then I found this book and I was reinvigorated. It contains a number of different types of puzzles, all of which fit into the Sudoku grid style yet all of which are refreshingly different.
This book has "Wacky Sudoku" which the rest of the world seems to call Jigsaw Sudoku The "Daily Telegraph" Jigsaw Sudoku (Daily Telegraph). With these, the grids are no longer 3 x 3 but may be arbitrary shapes enclosing nine spaces. The regular rules apply in that rows, columns and the enclosed spaces all have unique 1 - 9 digits, but you need to think differently to solve them.
Hyper Sudoku has overlapping square grids which I had fun with but which seemed to make the puzzles much simpler to solve.
It also has a version of Sudoku using letters and spelling out a nine letter word or phrase. I had great fun with these and ended up getting an entire book of them Godoku: 200 Fun and Challenging Sudoku-style Puzzles with Letters!.
There were also Killer Sudoku and Kakuro puzzles, but these weren't my favorites. Unlike regular Sudokus where you're really trying to make a set of non-repeating digits (or letters), Killer Sudoku and Kakuro are more algebraic in nature. But -- I still did them all!
For anyone who is starting to get bored with regular Sudokus, or even for anyone who just wants to try some of the variations out there, I highly recommend this book. It's enjoyable, the puzzles are never so hard that they can't be solved and I simply enjoyed being able to open the book to a random page and find a new puzzle to be solved. Unlike plain old 9 x 9 Sudoku, you'll never find yourself bored with these.
Easy, Hard to Read.......2007-05-13
The puzzles are VERY easy and the print is very hard to read, especially in the killer sudokus.
Sudoku meets middle school homework.......2007-03-10
I'm a fan of variation. I like to intersperse a little Acey-Ducey into my backgammon. I like to break up the old Texas Hold-`Em with some Omaha Hi-Lo, nighttime baseball, 7/27, Screw Your Neighbor, or good old fashioned 5 card draw. So imagine my excitement to see Will Shortz' new book of Sudoku variations. Something novel, something to give me back that same rush I used to get doing regular Sudokus.
I have to report mixed results. Some of these variants have the appearance of a novel challenge but are actually easier. Or the same, as in the case of the first set, the "Wacky Sudoku." Wacky just means the boxes are irregularly shaped. So everything is the same, but you need to squint at the shapes, take a beat, and then solve it the same way you would any Sudoku. It just slows you down a step, and you might have to adjust your notation system accordingly.
It's a little bit of headache but not much of a variation. An anaology would be me inventing "Dim Sudoku" and claiming that as an a new game. It would be a version in which you do Sudoku in a room that doesn't have adequate lighting, so it's a little harder and hurts your head.
"Hyper Sodoku" falls in the same category as Samurai Sudoku, those overlapping puzzles, but in the hyper variant there are 4 extra 3X3 boxes inlaid within the puzzle, in which the same rules apply, no repeating of the digits one through 9. Sounds trickier but it is actually easier, it's additional data. Some of the little boxes are contained in a column, a row, and then two different 3X3 boxes, so there are more paths of deduction. "Wordoku" I guess is for people who really dig those jumble puzzles; it's basically a cross-contamination of the two. You have letters instead of numbers, so it slows you down for a second while you get a hang of the 9 letters. But then, one shaded column contains a 9 letter word. So when you are about two-thirds done with your Sudoku, all of a sudden you solve the jumble and get to cheat the puzzle a little.
Those first three variations didn't do a lot for me, since they just gently impede you instead of calling for a new approach to the puzzle. It's like shooting pool with a heavy winter coat on. But then, we get "Killer Sudoku," which really is different. There aren't enough numbers given to just get going on the puzzle, but smaller grids are marked off with the sums of the numbers in those squares listed in the corners. So, if Wordoku is for people intimidated by the mathematical appearance of Sudoku, then Killer Sudoku is for people who resent the actual lack of arithmetic in the classic Sudoku. You really do need to think through these differently, which I enjoyed. These lead to "Karoku," and now you're doing algebra. This is a little bit of a trend on its own, where you are given the vertical and horizontal sums and then have to fill in the numbers. Digits can't repeat within a single answer. You have to generate the sets of possible numbers and then eliminate them down to the single integers. I don't think the excitement will last long, it feels a little too homeworky.
I think the excitement of Karoku will wear off in about the same amount of time as math in base-8. But at least it is really different, forces you to flex some different muscles for the moment.

JB Milwaukee.......2007-01-04
Puzzle #100 (the World championship puzzle) is a disappointment. I completed it in an easy 12 minutes. However the many sudoku variants will be fun for the experienced puzzler. I did hope for something more challenging. The quality of the paper could be better.
Great, except Puzzle 2!.......2006-10-14
There is a GLARING error in Puzzle 2! :) It can't be solved, and even the solution in the back is all wrong... some editor didn't give this one a lot of time because it's just so freakin' obvious! :) Anyway. I love any Sudoku variation book, so even with the error, it's still fun.

Terrific Sudoku Book.......2007-06-03
*****
This book is a steal at the bargain price, but worth even the retail price. There are 100 sudoku puzzles organized into "Light and Easy", "Moderate", "Demanding", and "Beware! Very Challenging!". They are large grids with only one puzzle per page, easy to work.
If you are a beginner, this probably isn't the best book for you, because it's light on technique. There is a cursory explanation about sudoku, but you really should be familiar with basic sudoku and basic techniques before you tackle this book.
A nice feature of the book is that there are eight complete puzzle walk-throughs, where explanations for each step of solving the puzzle are written out. I used this book as my second Sudoku book, and as such, it was perfect!
Definitely recommended.
