Book Description
So You Think You're Smart is a delightful book of word games that the entire family can enjoy. All games are concise, uncomplicated and, most of all, a lot of fun. They are about ordinary words and things that everybody knows about so only common knowledge and a bit of resourcefulness are needed to solve them.
The games are only one of the fun features. All answers are encrypted! Each is given on the same page as the game, but is printed upside-down and backward - as in a mirror image. To ensure that they cannot be accidentally read, the answers are further obscured by using italics and a reduced size type. A mirror is needed to reveal the answers - and a special unbreakable plastic one is provided with each book.

One I got started I discovered it (the book) captivating and soon found I must limit my time with it or I wouldn't get anything else accomplished during the day. It brings me enjoyment each time I go back to it.

Book Doesn't come apart with use.......2007-09-06
This is a well-made paperback book. It has easy, intermediate, and advanced puzzles. I found the advanced ones not to be so difficult that it took the pleasure out of the game. I liked the whole presentation of the book. Nicely made and laid out!
Not for beginners.......2007-03-01
I have done several Sudoku Books and this one is NOT for beginners, or low intermediates. After the pages 1-7 it gets really hard then you have to cheat!!
The perfect challenge for any sudoku enthusiast - highly recommended!.......2006-09-03
This is definitely one of the more challenging sudoku books I've tried. The puzzles start off fairly easy, but become almost impossible to solve by the end. The book is divided into sections for easy, medium, and hard puzzles, and within each section puzzles are also ranked on a difficulty scale from one to five. I really enjoyed the challenge here, and still have not solved most of the harder ones. One particularly nice thing about this collection is that the grids are fairly large, so there's plenty of room to pencil in options and notes as you work, which is definitely a must for the more advanced puzzles! In addition, all of the solutions are provided at the back of the book, so you can check your work. I'd highly recommend this collection to any sudoku enthusiast. However, I will offer a word of warning to those who have already enjoyed this book and are looking for others like it - not all of Tammy Seto's books are the same! I've also purchased her book "Sudoku Fever," which turned out to be patronizingly easy. Even the rankest of beginners would become bored quickly. I have not, however, tried her book "Sudoku Mania," so am not sure where that falls on the difficulty scale.
Review of Sudoku: More than 200 Fun and Challenging Japanese Number Puzzles by Tammy Seto.......2006-08-22
I am currently completing the puzzles in this book and so far, am enjoying it.
Pretty but not useful.......2006-05-09
This book of puzzles is the most frustrating one of many I have bought. The numbers are put into pretty design arrangements that have nothing to do with the difficulty of the pattern. Some labeled beginner are quite difficult, while at least one labeled intermediate had only one step logic involved. I like to know the difficulty level before I begin so I can choose one appropriate for the time available and challenge that I am in the mood for. You have no idea with this book. There are many good books available, no reason to buy this one.

This is not one of those pencil mazes you worked on as a kid. The entire book is one addictive maze. Each page spread is a room leading to other page/rooms. Your goal is to find the shortest route to the center and back while solving the puzzle in the center room--if you can figure out what the puzzle is. But then, each room is a puzzle filled with clues to decipher. Read the text and examine the gorgeous illustrations carefully. Beware--not every clue can be trusted. If you're an online gamer, consider this a Web site you can carry wherever you go.
Book Description
This is not really a book. This is a building in the shape of a book....a maze. Each numbered page depicts a room in the maze. Tempted? Test your wits against mine. I guarantee that my maze will challenge you to think in ways you've never thought before. But beware. One wrong turn and you may never escape!
Customer Reviews:
Unusual.......2007-01-18
This is a must in any library, whether you like mazes or not. Beautifully done.
One of the best puzzles ever, but also one of the toughest.......2006-07-13
A puzzle not for the faint-of-heart -- there is NO solution available to brute force and you are not expected to solve it in an evening. It's an exciting, detailed trip through a fiendish den of riddles and allusions with an untrustworthy guide, and I've used it as a great conversation piece with smart people. (Somewhere I have whole notebooks filled with sketched maps and riddle notes, the combined efforts of my theatre group ...) Highly recommended for those who love difficult, DIFFICULT puzzles.
nice but ... no answers.......2005-01-04
The format of this book is interesting: each numbered page is a room. The reader's goal is interesting: find the path from the first room to the 45th room and back. The text follows a person (the narrator) guiding a small group of visitors around the maze-building. The drawings are all pen & ink (no color). The task & setup are fun, but ...
Here are my issues: (1) The narrator is a bit nasty -- nothing unsuitable for young children, but certainly not pleasant. (2) You absolutely MUST solve at least one riddle to find a path from room 1 to room 45. (3) There is no way to know whether you have found the correct answer to a riddle -- or for that matter, the shortest path.
My daughter & I have enjoyed reading this book together. It was intersting & fun. You'll enjoy it more if you aren't expecting a 5-star book.
I met them at the gate though I usually wait inside..........2004-07-29
This book is truly one of the most amazing creations I've ever held in my two hands. The dialogues, the pictures, the clues, riddles, symbolism, historical references...it's all fantastic. I've been working on this for over three years now with my best friend and several others, and although we solved it over a year ago, we still keep going back to this book. Everytime you open it up, there's something new to discover. And the more research we do, the more incredible it becomes. It truly lives up to its' title as the World's Most Challenging Puzzle. We're still trying to dicipher clues in some of the rooms, although we have theories about nearly all of them, and some hard facts on quite a few.
If you want to discuss anything about the Maze, please feel free to e-mail me...we're always interested in new opinions
Finally! The Answer is out there!.......2004-04-15
I first found this online 7 years ago, and it has tormented me ever since. I thought I was alone, but the reviews here tell me how many others there are. My ray of sunshine came when I searched the net for the answer, and found it. You don't have to cheat! (I cxan't beleive it either.)
Amazing riddle . . . the best "choose your own adventure" book EVER.

Nice!.......2007-01-11
This is a great book, though it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. There are some errors in the book (usually typographical) but other than that this is a great way to occupy your time and boost your logic skills.
What a Blast!!!.......2006-06-11
We did these puzzles with our two older children. What a blast! I would have liked a little more variety, but the puzzles provided a good challenge. This book is worth the money.
cool.......2005-10-24
This was a fun collection for a short while, but too many of the puzzles were based on the same theme and it became boring. Otherwise, it was a welcomed challenge.
Great fun .......2005-08-29
Enjoy logic puzzles written with a comic edge. They increase in difficulty as the book goes along, but none are impossible. Recommended for anyone who enjoys doing logic puzzles.
Nice one Mensa!.......2003-12-13
I found this on Mensa's best books list and so ordered it through this site. It only took a few days and since it arrived I have very much enjoyed working my way through the puzzles. They're solvable but some of them still need a bit of thought. And looking at the ones at the end (which I've yet to reach), some of those jobs around the house are gonna have to wait a while!

Customer Reviews:
Very satisfying collection of puzzles.......2007-04-09
I had little difficulty reading the puzzles (per the previous reviewer), and found the puzzles themselves large enough to easily work with (compared to many others). They range from difficult to nearly impossible, but somehow I managed to make my way through the entire collection. Overall, I found the puzzles fully enjoyable; this was a collection I always enjoyed pulling out for some mental gymnastics. I wish Bumgardner would come out with a Volume II, as he has a good sense of Kakuro style--puzzles that make you think, but not necessarily (compared with, say, the Dell collections) make you have to work more than think.
Great puzzles but impossible to read.......2006-08-20
This book has puzzles difficult enough to be challenging without having to resort to looking up the answers. BUT! The numbers are small, skinny, and white, on a medium gray background and very hard to read. As with most kakuro books, the puzzles are way too small. Enlarge 40% and darken the background, and you're set to go. To me, it has been worth it due to the quality of the puzzles.

Customer Reviews:
Terry Stickels is amazing.......2007-02-21
Terry Stickels is amazing. If it took him as long to create these puzzles as it takes me to attempt to solve them, then he would never have enough to publish a book! That's the genius of his publications - they truly are a challenge to avid gamers and novices alike. I particularly like the fact that most are not solved through simple mathematical equations. Most require looking at problems in unique ways and evaluating outside of normal problem-solving methodologies. I enjoy sharing puzzles with friends and watching them flippantly give wrong answers based on the obvious. They quickly realize that correct answers require looking at the problem from several angles. Great mental exercises! I would recommend to all.
Best yet!.......2007-02-16
Stickels shines again in what I think are his best puzzles. This book has something for everyone--I love the wordplay, but many of my friends stop by my desk to help out with the mathmatical puzzles. I have been reading "Stickelers" in the Washington Post for some time, and this book continues the fun of his newspaper columns. I'm hoping he writes a book soon for my young nephews--it would be great to get them thinking on a higher level at an early age. Go for it, Terry!
Terry Has Done It Again!.......2007-02-15
Terry Stickels--the nation's foremost creator of puzzles of all kinds--has done it again!
This comprehensive collection of puzzles in different formats is a delight to ponder over, and to share with your friends and family.
There are surprises and challenges throughout--and what a great fun way to keep your brain flexible and fit, through exhilerating exercise!
Spectacular Selection.......2007-02-12
This is a wonderful collection of Terry's STICKELERS column seen in papers across America ( KING FEATURES). It has a little something for everyone from math and logic puzzles to word games to Terry's famous spatial puzzles. This is a " must have " book, especially if you and your kids are interested in learning how to become better critical thinkers. Plus, like all Stickels' books, it's just plain fun. He's the best at what he does and this will be around for a long time.

Challenging But Flawed.......2007-03-19
"Challenging Lateral Thinking Puzzles" by Paul Sloane and Des MacHale is a book of puzzles that challenges readers to not take the puzzles at face value, but approach the problems from the side, coming up with a unique answer. There are four different types of puzzles: Easy, Moderate, Difficult, and Fiendish. Following the puzzles is a clue section, which mostly consists of several questions that can be answered "yes" or "no", although a few of the clues consist of a further explanation of the puzzle, with no questions. After the clue section is the answer section with a detailed explanation of each puzzle. There are also two WALLY (World Association for Laughter, Learning, and Youth) Tests. One is easy, the other is advanced. The authors put a four minute time limit on these tests, which are more like riddles than the lateral thinking puzzles. There is no clue section for the WALLY tests.
"Challenging Lateral Thinking Puzzles" is indeed a challenging book. It's best used with a group of people with people taking turns asking the questions while others guess the answers. The easy puzzles are, for the most part, very easy. Some of them, like "The Nephew" are in fact too easy, while "Your Turn to Drive" is also easy but pushes the lateral thinking concept. However, several of the puzzles are great examples of lateral thinking, namely "Father and Son" and "Another Man in an Elevator" which has a nice twist on a classical lateral thinking puzzle. The puzzle "Wondrous Walk" is very easy but made me smile. While a couple of the puzzles in the Moderate Section are pretty easy, especially "Flat Tire I" and "Flat Tire II", a couple of them are good examples of lateral thinking especially "Saturday Flights" and "The Hold-Up". Some puzzles are too hard and need more clues, especially "Death in a Car". The Difficult Section is indeed difficult, but not in a good way. One of the puzzles, "The Protagoras Paradox" has no real answer and shouldn't have been included in the book. "The Missing Furniture" puzzle is implausible and the puzzle "Found, Lost, Found" needs more information. The Fiendish Section contains some good lateral thinking puzzles such as "The Deadly Shot", "The Cellar Door" and "Flat Out". The WALLY puzzles are more riddles than puzzles and are pretty easy with answers that will make you groan.
"Challenging Lateral Puzzles" has a few things I didn't like. The puzzles do not list what pages the clues and answers are on, so there's a lot of flipping back and forth between pages. Some of the clues aren't that helpful and some, like the last clue for "The Apple Problem" and "The Amazing Fall" are badly worded and don't help solve the puzzle. And one of the answers to the clues for "Cuddly Bears" is missing which is frustrating.
"Challenging Lateral Puzzles" is a fun but flawed puzzle book.
Don't take this book too laterally ;-).......2003-06-03
I got this book, along with 3 other Sloane & MacHale lateral thinking puzzle books for Christmas one year. At first it seemed like a sorry excuse for a gift, but as I read this one first, I found that it was a challenging endeavor of the mind. Lateral thinking, it seems, is taking a situation and finding a solution that is not the most obvious, but usually the most logical. That said, this is challenging to say the least. A good book for people who enjoy mind games.
Too vague to be useful.......2002-03-12
I would say that only about 15 percent of this book has material that is really useful as lateral-thinking exercises. The rest of it is too vague to be of much use. Useful questions should be specific enough to narrow down a solution by exercising the various methods of lateral thinking. For example, you should be able to come up with a specific solution by considering ways in which your assumptions affect how you understand the question. This book has too many "why did the chicken cross the road?" questions that require you to be psychic in order to get anywhere near the solution or require you to pull some obscure fact out of the clear blue sky.
Good Intro to Lateral Thinking Puzzles.......2001-05-03
I picked up this book after completing "Archimedes Bathtub; the Art and Logic of Breakthrough Thinking" by David Perkins. The book expounded on the benefits of this genre of mind puzzle, and I wanted to check out some of them for myself. I was a bit disappointed in what I found for several reasons; the puzzles were identical to the most common puzzles I had come across (including "There's a man coming home"); many of the same puzzles can be found on any of the multiple lateral thinking websites; and finally many of them were so laden with historical knowledge that the problem was more a test of trivia knowledge than what could be considered a true lateral thinking puzzle.
That being said, the book was well put together with good hints and final answers located far enough from the answer so as to prevent haphazard skipping ahead to answers. Some of the puzzles were quite ingenious, and there were two review 'tests' which allowed you to monitor your progress. It is very clear that the author had spent some time with the puzzles, and the illustrations, while corny, did help to break up what would otherwise be a very short book. While the book was somewhat disappointing in the aforementioned areas, it did succeed in its most basic claim, and for that reason I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn a little bit more about the subject, as I imagine the book to be as good as any available (who knows, I may yet read a second).
If you are already well-versed in lateral thinking puzzles, this might not be the book for you. If you are looking to find out more about them, this is probably as good a place to start as any.
great for car trips and party games.......2000-11-21
I gave this book to my son about a year ago. It has provided hours of fun and good growth in logic. Our whole family has gotten smarter I think by doing these brain teasers.
