Ordered this book as a gift for my husband. He recently started learning card tricks. I thought this book would have more entertaining tricks for him to learn, but overall he wasn't impressed with it. It's mostly simple parlor tricks and would be best suited for teens or children.

There are a few good tricks in this book, but not enough to justify its cost. Most of the effort in producing this book seems to have gone into the presentation, which is slick and glossy, but adds nothing to the book's ability to teach magic.

Excellent magic book .......2007-08-22

This is easily one of the better books for beginners. Quite a few pictures and clear instructions make this a real winner. The author does a superb job of explaining how to present each illusion which in reality is far more important than the mechanics behind the trick. This is a nice change from many of the other magic books targeted at the novice. By the way, the tricks cover a wide range (e.g. cards, coins, mentalism) and are all of high quality.

Excellent guide to classic tricks.......2005-10-04

I predict that this book will become a classic for both beginning and intermediate magicians. Very little of the material is new and it won't make you the next David Blaine, but it does provide excellent handlings of classic tricks which require little or no set-up. The explanations and photos are clear and helpful.

Tamora Pierce created yet another great book! Street Magic is adventurous and magical in every page. It's difficult NOT to get hooked. I'm sure everybody would enjoy this book if they tried.

Briar Moss whom is now fourteen is living in Chammer for the time being with his teacher Rosethorn. And while Briar's wandering the streets of a market he runs into a young girl named Evvy. He see's her polishing stones at a shop and knows instantly that she's a stone mage, even though she doesn't know it. After Briar chases her down he becomes her teacher.

As he teaches Evvy magic Briar is caught by another problem. The two main gangs in Chammer are having a war and Briar is helping to heal a certain gang. Then Briar hears that the fiercest gang is looking for a stone mage to help them find precious gems...that means Evvy...

In the second book of the Circle Opens quartet, 14-year-old Winding Circle temple resident Briar Moss and his teacher Rosethorn take a trip east to the city of Chammur. Wandering through a market place, Briar finds a street girl who is using powerful magic to polish stones. He decides to find her a teacher. But when gang warfare breaks out, he learns that the fiercest gang is looking for a stone mage to help them find hidden treasures, and he might be the only protection Evvy will get. When Briar hears that the enemy gang has a benefactor he knows that to stop the war he must stop the benefactor. Then Briar learns that the benefactor is also a murderer, he realizes that the fate of Chammurs gangs might rest in his hands. Exciting and entertaining, this is a perfect book for 5th-8th graders.

I loved this book. Briar is my favorite charecter, so maybe that's why I loved this book so much. Unlike SOME people, I am not going to give away the ending and stuff. Briar, after training as a mage for 4 years, is traveling with his teacher, Rosethorn. while he is traveling, he meets Evvy,a girl who is apparently a stone mage. He must teach her how to controll her magic and avoid other gangs so he can live. A rich lady decides to kidnap Evvy, and Briar gets mad... Anyways this is totally my favorite book that Ms.pierce has written.

Perhaps Tamora's best book.......2005-08-20

I truely enjoyed this Tamora Pierce book best. Many people don't like the fact that (dramatic pause) she's actually writing about a male main chaceter. Well, she does it a he*l of a lot better then when she writes about girls.

This book doesn't soften any cruelty or meanness, and not everything works out Okey dokey in the end. There is a little bit of violence, but nothing overly diturbing.

And, I mainly just like Briar's chaceter best. He is more realistic then the rest of her quartet. Plus she doesn't muck up the entire book with romance. There's a little flirting, but you can't espect more from Tamora Pierce.

The Goose Girl is an inspiring book. It is a journey for both the character and the reader, who experience change in their own lives. Never before have words so easy and enjoyable to read, strike me. That have uplifted me, and left me wanting more.

In the beginning, Ani is not confident about herself, and the position that she is asked to fulfill, like almost anyone. As she faces her future with the prince of a neighboring country, is betrayed by those she thought she could trust, and having to make an entirely new life out of something that did not seem possible, the reader is enticed into the companionship between Ani and her new friends, the suspense and loveliness of the blending of experiences. The life changes of the "Prima Dona" to a servant is not an easy task, for anyone. Whether you are going from junior high/middle school to high school, or raising your own children and trying to cope with the new challenges of being a parent. Everyone wishes that they could have the opportunity to hear the whisperings on the wind, listen to animals and have a bond tighter then humans do with each other.

This book for me was revealing, relaxing, enjoyable, and invigorating. It is not everyday that you are able to be pulled into a book that grabs you by the shoulders, and makes a mystery, suspense, love and comedy into an enjoyable book for any and all ages.
I've met Shannon Hale, and she is an amazing author. She is so "intone" with herself; as a woman, wife, friend, daughter, mother, etc. She is aware of the need for good, wholesome literature that makes you want to run through the fields and experience and view life as you've never seen before.

I read this book because I have three daughters and someone told me they would like it. Actually I really enjoyed it, so much so that I bought and read Enna Burning as well.

A Lovely Princess Tale.......2007-08-22

"The Goose Girl" may be looked at as two things. It is a tale about a princess, a retelling of an old Grimm tale (one that I have not yet encountered). It is also a sort of fantasy book including speech with animals and magic control.

And yet, "The Goose Girl" does not fall into the common, stereotypical traps set by these genres/types. It is a book that is remarkably enough not stale, with twists, excitements, and constant changes. It may be the simple story of a princess going through hardships to achieve her goal, but it has so much more than that. It has side characters that spice up the story, plot turns that make things different, and a comfortable pace. The magic and fantasy of the story do not control it, which means that lovers of reality will still be pleased by this story.

It's a well-written book with an interesting plotline and some very fun characters. But it has its flaws as well. "The Goose Girl" is an almost 400-paged book, and it certainly feels it at times. While there is an unobstructed flow, there are many points in the book where it grows tedious and begins to drag. This book could do with a good edit.

If you don't mind that it drags on a bit, it's really a great book. You don't have to love princesses or fantasy to enjoy this book. It's not that kind of a book. It's eloquent, enjoyable, and for any reader who can handle a bit of bulk. Enjoy.

Not Princess Fluff.......2007-07-15

Hale has a lovely writing style and the ability to create characters you can really rally behind. Ani's tranformation from shy and insignificant to regal was not done in a cliche way, and she remained true to her character (her slightly anxious character) all the way through. I enjoy introspective characters and Hale is excellent at creating them. Do not pass off Hale's work as "Princess Fluff" as all of her YA novels have a rich writing style, moral conflicts, and even a dose of uglyness (murders, battles, abandonment) that keeps her books feeling real, despite the magical elements.

One of the Most Magical Books I've Read.......2007-06-13

At first, I was skeptical of a book titled THE GOOSE GIRL, but I borrowed it from the library anyway. Little did I know that this magical debut would become one of my favorite books and Shannon Hale my favorite author.

To keep peace between two nations, Princess Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, first daughter and jewel of Kildenree (Ani for short) is sent to the kingdom of Bayern to marry the prince. On the way, she is betrayed by her lady-in-waiting and half of her guards. Alone, Ani finds her way to the capital of Bayern where she gets the job of watching the king's geese, all the while waiting for her chance to regain her name.

Though a fantasy, THE GOOSE GIRL seems realistic. There is magic, but a believeable sort. Ani, too, is a believable and likeable heroine, and the supporting characters are three dimensional as well.

THE GOOSE GIRL'S biggest fault is that it's slow-moving. Not boring, but it is long and the story could have been told in less pages, which might be a turn-off to some readers. The first part is especially slow. There is also some violence, though certainly not as much as the sequel ENNA BURNING. However, Shannon Hale's writing is absolutely beautiful. Wonderful metaphors and imagery and vivid word choices make this one of the best debut novels that I've read and certainly one of the most magical books.

This is a novel that I strongly recommend to all, especially those who love retellings of fairy tales. Though certainly not perfect, THE GOOSE GIRL is truly a lovely book that definitely does not disappoint.

I learned from this book that sometimes you only have one good novel in you; that you can write your heart out and still not get anywhere; that dialect will betray your unfamiliarity with culture; that doing something just because no one has before isn't a good enough reason.

Card writes involving fiction that has been great, but this novel seldom rises above embarrassing. He's a good storyteller, even when the writing is abysmal, but if this book is any evidence, he's no novelist.

I like Orson Scott Card.. but when he starts talking about black people I just want to cringe. I'm still in the process of reading the book as it's just one of those you can't put down even if you try to. As a black person I wouldn't really reccommend this book to anyone who doesn't truly understand the black culture as this might give someone an off representation about how it really is to be black. It seems like Card tried really hard to get his characters right and I think it was nice of him to try... I think he's just trying to hard to address racial and age related issues. The actuall story is pretty intriguing though if you're able to get past everything else... so yah. Read it if you'd like, but just remember that these are characters and not real people. Honestly, black people don't really think about their color all the time. They only think of it when they're reminded of it.

One of my favorite Orson Scott Card books.......2007-01-03

If you're looking for a great book by Orson Scott Card, but don't want to delve into a series such as the phenomenal Ender series, the Homecoming series, or the Alvin Maker series, please start with Magic Street. If you're a long time reader of Card, but haven't picked this one up yet, do yourself a favor and get it!

In my opinion, Orson Scott Card can write just about any genre. With Magic Street, he tackles contemporary fantasy, and he does it perfectly. This is the story of Mack Street, a young boy who soon finds that the world he lives in is not as simple as it seems. He meets Puck from A Midsummers Night Dream and soon finds himself in the beautiful world created by Shakespeare. This story is much more involved than this, but I don't want to give much away. But basically, it's a wonderful story of the fantasy of what might await us on the other side of this concrete, urban life.

If you like this book, you may also enjoy Card's Enchantment, which is his somewhat retelling of Sleeping Beauty...only not that simple. If you've read Enchantment and enjoyed it, you will definitely enjoy this one too.

Card doing what Card does best.......2006-12-31

Like most of Card's best-known works, "Magic Street" deals with a child prodigy of sorts. Mack Street was found in a plastic grocery bag just hours after being born. He was saved, taken in and began to grow up, all the while fighting off a strange ability to peer into other people's dreams. As he grows, he encounters magic in many forms -- from the mysterious Bag Man that was present for his birth to a passageway to a true Fairyland just down the road. In the end, Mack and his friends have to do battle with an ancient power, and only the goodness in Mack's heart may have the power to save them all.

Card's previous contemporary fantasy, "Enchantment," dealt with a modernized version of the story of Sleeping Beauty. This time, his inspiration is the Fairyland of William Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream." He uses those elements wonderfully, crafting a world of mystic power and wonder smack-dab in the middle of a predominantly black Los Angeles suburb. The rules of the world he's crafted are solid and consistent, even thought it takes us some time to understand them.

Card's talent for characterization is also evident through this novel. Mack himself is a pure, virtuous soul, but not in an idealized or unrealistic way. He simply comes across as a very real boy with a very good heart (one that turns out to make perfect sense). Other characters, like the Bag Man, Mack's surrogate mother Miz Smitcher and his guardian Ceese Tucker, are all fleshed out very well. This book -- in large part -- is about wishes and wish fulfillment. Card uses these wishes not only to drive the plot, but to build up and realize his characters as well. In the end, you believe not only in Mack, but in the entire neighborhood that's raised him together. You believe in them and, what's more, you want them to win -- even the ones you don't really like.

The book has a few slow parts towards the beginning. The opening chapters detailing Mack's birth drag a bit, and thee book may have been served better by beginning with Ceese's discovery and allowing the reader to learn of Mack's origins at the same time as the character. The dialect, at times, gets a little tiresome as well. But these are both small problems in an othewise very strong, very entertaining novel .

This is also one of the few Card novels that doesn't readily open itself to a sequel, and that's just fine. This story is complete and whole unto itself. It's also really, really good.

The Secret Order of the Gumm Street Girls is a fantastic book! When I borrowed it from my local library I couldn't put it down. It shows a lot of imagination, friendship, and teamwork. My eldest daughter is seven and we were having a really hard time getting her over the hump of only wanting to read the thin paperback chapter books. This book was the solution because it still had little line drawings every few pages so she didn't "feel" as if she was reading a larger hardback book. This was the transition to other, more substantial, books. And, as she said, "it was the best book EVER Mama!!" (What more endorsement do you need??)

My 9 year old daughter who hates to read has quickly come to love this book and looks forward to reading together at bedtime. We are not finished yet, but look forward to finding out all the mysteries that are developing as we go along. It's a good book to read together because it's as interesting to me as to her. A stunning sequel.......2007-08-08

The runaway popular book, Shadowmancer, now has a true sequel (the books Wormwood and Tersias the Oracle were related, but did not follow the same characters).

Taylor has worked in the music industry, and for many years on the Yorkshire Police Force, before becoming ordained as an Episcopalian vicar. He self-published his first book, Shadowmancer, selling his motorcycle to get the money. The book was a hit--on the bestseller lists.

The story of Thomas, Kate and Raphah continues, with Beadle assisting Raphah (who has not died after being thrown overboard, but has been swallowed by a whale!). Jacob Crane, the smuggler captain of The Magenta, takes Kate and Thomas to London. Raphah and Beadle travel to London by coach, fleeing the evil Vicar Demurral and searching for Thomas and Kate. They meet a varied group of travelers, among them Cartaphilus Barghast and the young and magical Lady Tanville Chilnam. When Crane's his boat is seized, he helps Kate and Thomas to flee to a refuge in Salamander Street.

Crane's old friend Pallium is oddly different. He is thin, and fixated on counting money--and praises his landlord Galphus. Kate discovers a haunted painting in her room, of a young woman named Isabella. Galphus seems kindly and safe, but is he really? What sorts of shoes does he make in his huge factory filled with child workers? Are Raphah and Beadle being followed by a change-shifter, a nasty huge beast of dog? Some of their fellow travelers seem to be on the same trail, also looking for two children. Who can be trusted? Who will survive?

The three friends are re-united finally at the end of the book, after harrowing dangers, in a cataclysmic and frightening conclusion.

I enjoyed the book very much. If you liked Shadowmancer you will enjoy this one too.

Part of a series.......2007-07-26

This book is part os a series, not the first, so it would have helped to have known the characters from a previous book. The story is a fairly routine adventure with good guys and bad guys. It provides mild distraction for a reader who has nothing else to do for a couple of hours.

gripping dark fantasy .......2007-05-16

In 1752 England Obadiah Demurral continues his quest to conquer heaven in order to rule on earth. Three children (Raphah, Thomas and Kate) with the help of the angel Raphael thwart his last efforts, but he is not finished. The three children travel to London aboard pirate Jacob Crane's ship, who has become a believer. He is taking his previous cargo to Salamander Street, supposedly a place of safety from Demurral.

Raphah gets separated from the others when he falls overboard. When Beadle, Demurral former slave happens upon a beach he sees a whale and out of his mouth comes Raphah. They head to London together. Meanwhile Crane, Kate, and Thomas reach London but officials board the ship and confiscate his cargo and inform him that Demurral sent word ahead that Crane kidnapped the children and stole something precious from him. When they reach the inn on Salamander Street Galphus takes Thomas to his factory and forces him to sign indenture papers. Later Kate is taken to Galphus's factory as a prisoner. Crane eventually is captured as well. They are waiting for Demurral to reach them as Galphus is his minion as good and evil clash for the souls of the children and their allies.

This dark fantasy grips readers with its good vs. evil war on earth in which Demurral seems more powerful than even the angel Raphael. The story line is action-packed never slowing down in its epic battle on the streets of eighteenth century London, yet the key players are fully developed so that the audience understands motives (some altruistic to save the world; others ambitious to rule the world). G.P. Taylor provides a wonderful fantasy with a religious theme that readers of all ages will appreciate.

good, but different from the others.......2000-03-22

I followed the Polk St School books in 4th grade and read them all in order. WHen I got to this one, I enjoyed it, but immediately found this one different from the others. It was the one that you realize doesn't fit in with the series. For starters, in the others, you will notice that every scene takes place in a school setting; playground, classroom or walking home. In this one, we get a glimpse of Richard at home, on his way back to school after Christmas vacation. He starts getting harassed by school bully, Drake. Then he finds a ruler in his desk, which seems to have magical powers. That was the other thing: these books were supposed to be sort of realistic fiction. Well the ruler and magic didn't fit in with that image. However I guess all of us as kids could have at least sworn something was magic... this book is still good, though. I liked it, it just wasn't my favorite.

This story is a parable, reminding and urging the reader to return to what God has designed them to be and do in life. In the story, as the young boy grows up, he becomes distracted by life's material offerings: Academia, money, a job... He lives apart from God's design for his life. He grows weary of doing what is 'expected' by others and returns to the place of his youth, to rediscover a first love - being truly at peace and fulfilled in living out God's plan for his life.

I work as an international trainer in the area of people development, hence I show this book all over the world to many people. So far without exaptions all people loved the book and many start deep thinking after reading it. This book makes you aware that we have only one life and that life is in the moment, yesterday never comes back and tomorrow can not be today. Life is in doing the things meant for me to do, do, do here right now.

55 Waverly Street is about the plans that God has for our lives that we recognize when we are children in the activities that give us joy. Later in the pursuit of making a living we lose sight of that joy and what God really meant us to be. I believe it says that we should be more faithful to God in pursuing our true God given talents. I fear booksellers may make a mistake and put this in the children's section and they will NOT understand it. It is beautifully written and illustrated. Each illustration is rich in content. If you understand it's intent you will find it very thought provoking.
