5 out of 5 stars beautiful but can be dangerous, too.......2007-07-04

I bought this over ten years ago. I think it was the first time this particular board was sold. When I was a child, I tried to use a ouija board, but nothing happened. I used this but hoped only a 'good spirit' would come through.

Well, this board definitely 'worked', but we channeled an evil spirit! And, the whole ordeal was really very terrifying. The spirit, calling itself "ormond" at first seemed quite benign. However, as the minutes passed, it became angrier and began to demand that the other person leave the room. I was too scared to have the other person leave the room and, although the board is obviously silent, it was clear this spirit was completely irate-- the indicator began to spin around and around the board over and over again. After a while of doing this, it would stop to spell out "leave now" or "only you" but that was it. We put the board away.

I did try to spiritually cleanse the board after this using sea salt and maybe sage (I don't remember), but when I tried the board again with another friend (after I told her about this experience), nothing happened at all. I never used it again and finally tossed it several years ago.

My daughter (now 15) really wants one of these, but I truly am hesitant to allow one. As pretty as this is, this is absolutely not a toy and needs to be used with care.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy this product.......2007-06-21

This psychic board was not worth buying. At first I was excited to use it but each time I used it nothing happened. The other boards i've tried are much better and work each time you use it. I would suggest trying another one besides this one.

5 out of 5 stars Dadadada!.......2007-01-05

I will only say that it works! I tried it once and I haven't done so again!!!!!!!!! I won't return it because its not faulty I'm just too much of a scardy cat to do it again.

5 out of 5 stars The most excellent psychic board!.......2006-07-12

I have used this board for going on 5 years now (I have had to replace this board because we keep wearing the poor things out) and I have never not once had a bad experience with the Psychic Circle. Usually it is my cousin and I that use the board and we have to sit at the same place. The board is very very picky about where we sit. If you are have trouble using your board, may I suggest that you find which direction suits your character/personality better. For instance, I am always North when I use it with my cousin who is always South. But when I use the pathfinder board with my mother I have to sit at the South position. It may be tedious to find your correct position but you will love the outcome it will give you. To use your psychic circle I would like to also suggest that you put the elements at each corresponding corner also. For air/incense, for water/water, for earth/crystals/rocks, and for fire/a lit candle. Also, we always always put a circle of salt around us. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Vivid colors and imagery.......2006-03-27

This board offers so much more of an enriching experience than standard boards. What a wonderful way to use all these symbols! I find it especially productive for working alone, as opposed to a plain board. There is so much on the board that I forget what is there, and am then surprised when the circle goes over a certain word that I wasn't expecting. The first time I used it was a little awkward, and the circle went straight to "goodbye" and off the board, but I've since found it to be enlightening.

Book Description

Crop circles, those beautiful and complex patterns that are visible from the air in fields around the world, have long fascinated the public, media, and scientific community. Vital Signs is a comprehensive guide for newcomers to these puzzling patterns and an essential history for those who are already intrigued. Illustrated with hundreds of full-color and black-and-white photos, this chronological and photographic history is an accessible discussion of the various crop circle theories, physical and statistical evidence, and the surprising effects these formations have had on observers and researchers.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Photographs, Light on the Text.......2006-03-16

This is one of two first-rate books on crop circles and their implications for mankind that I recommend. This one is the "coffee table" book, with an absolutely sensational collection of clear color photographs that provide what I believe may be the single best collection of distinct crop circles at distinct times and places on the planet.

This book is however light on the text and the thinking. It should be read in conjunction with "Open Minds: A Journal of Extraordinary Encounters, Crop Circles, and Resonance," by Simeon Hein, Ph.D.

I am persuaded of three things by these books taken together and my various other readings:

1) The Earth is alive and everything on it is a web of life that has a global consciousness--the butterfly effect and the mind over matter effects are real.

2) There exist other forms of intelligence at least equal if not vastly superior to ours elsewhere, and I speculate from some of this reading that we are a "diversity enhancer" for a larger constellation of planets, and that we may also be failing a longer-term test to determine if we are ready for inter-planetary interaction.

3) There are, between books like this and the many very intelligent people that tend NOT to go into politics, clear possibilities for our rising to the challenge. We simply have not focused as a Collective Intelligence or World Brain, and we need to do so before we destroy our planet and our species.

Both books are almost mesmerizing.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Thought-Provoking.......2005-07-12

This is a graphically rich and comprehensive book full of beautiful photos and big ideas. Thomas stimulates our imagination and wonder about this mysterious phenomenon. However, like some other books in this genre, he fails to seriously address the issue of manmade crop formations. Nonewithstanding what some other reviewers on this page have said, manmade formations are a large, signficant, and important part of the crop circle scene. As many of these land art designs produce strange effects, like camera and battery failure, previously attributed only to "genuine" formations, books like Vital Signs need to address this aspect of the mystery, rather than simply dismissing manmade formations as "hoaxes." That being said, readers are bound to find this book a worthwhile and lasting investment.

5 out of 5 stars A Crop Circle Encyclopedia.......2003-10-14

Vital Signs is the most comprehensive guide to the beautiful and enigmatic crop circles ever written. Andy writes in a very clear and easy to read style, putting together an enormous amount of information, combined with loads of wonderful photos, many of them in color.
This book is a "must read" for any crop circle enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars A definitive history of the crop circles.......2003-05-02

When Andy Thomas' Vital Signs first came out in its UK edition in 1998, it was quickly seen as one of the best historical surveys of the post-1978 crop circle phenomenon. As a longtime editor of the journal of the Southern Circular Research group (now known as Swirled News at www.swirlednews.com), as well as a top-notch researcher himself, Thomas had been looking long and hard at the crop formations, from every angle, both inside and outside the glyphs. With great persistence, a feisty spirit, and often hilarious drama at such venues as the annual Glastonbury Symposium and the International UFO Congress, Thomas remains one of the fiercest defenders of the true crop circles, and a defender as well of the hard research that's been done on the phenomenon over the years. I'm happy to see that Vital Signs has come out in an updated version in the US, incorporating the glyphs from the intervening years, including the 2001 season. Readers unfamiliar with the first edition will want to buy this version, one of the best overviews of the phenomenon.

Vital Signs begins with a painstaking presentation of the ground-level data, including the unusual layering and swirls of the downed crop, while providing important details of the scientific work that's been done analyzing the effects on the stalks and soil, establishing the reality of the phenomenon beyond all the hoaxing. It then goes elaborately into what's seen from up above: the pictorial shapes and beautiful geometries, uncovering the mathematics encoded in the shapes. Along the way, we also learn of the strange balls of light (BOLs) seen hovering over the fields and of the effects of crop circle energies on electronic equipment and the biological systems of humans and animals. We're treated too to eyewitness accounts of crop circles forming, including the important recent case in Amsterdam when Nancy Talbott-a key scientific researcher and member of the BLT Research Team-along with Robbert van der Broeke, saw three powerful tubes of light descend into a bean field outside the van der Broeke home, only to discover a few minutes later that a structured crop circle had appeared in the field. It's stories like these that lead one to believe that crop circles are a key part of the worldwide UFO phenomenon.

One of the great strengths of Vital Signs is the year-by-year chronology it provides, as well as the beautiful photographic gallery that accompanies the text, including a central color section. It's a chronicle that not only describes the fascinating evolution of the crop formations over the years, but also the rabid atmosphere of controversy that has grown up around them: are they manmade, anomalous, or a mixture of both? How can you tell the real from the hoaxed and what's the percentage of each? Are the simple ones the true phenomenon, or are some of the more complex formations real as well? As Thomas juggles the assertions and denials on both sides of the fence-as well as the natural, supernatural, and ufological theories as to how they're made-what finally emerges is that, if any of them are not manmade (and much evidence supports the idea that many, perhaps most of them are not), then we have a genuine mystery that's growing in scope around the world. However, it's only ongoing, careful research that has the power to cut through the fog of disinformation. Vital Signs is a great introduction for those confronting the crop circles for the very first time, as well as a primary resource for long-time researchers still dazzled by the mysterious signs in the fields.

I loved this book , as I have all of this authors work. So much fun and suspense wraped together, impossible to put down.

5 out of 5 stars I want more!!!.......2006-09-15

I love this series of books! Good thrillers that don't give you nightmares or gross you out. The interaction between the circle of friends is engaging. Good for more than a few chuckles and the occasional belly laugh. I've stayed up half the night on more than one occasion because I couldn't put the book down. The Wiccan slant is accurate but not over done, so non-pagans should enjoy this read. I'm hoping there are many more books to come in this series.

5 out of 5 stars the divine circle of ladies courting trouble.......2006-08-19

the only problem with this series is that ms. riccio just can't seem to crank them out fast enough! all the books about these ladies are great romps and this one was no exception.---hurry up with the next one!

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-04-23

As usual, The Divine Circle is full of twists, turns, laughs and fun. This series of books was introduced to me by a friend, and I love them. Finally, friends who treat each other with respect, loyalty and life long contributions who enjoy the path they are given.

The books plot is fresh and unusual, which adds to Ms Riccio's outstanding writing.

I for one, can't wait for more.

3 out of 5 stars not as good as the others.......2006-04-10

I have really enjoyed Md Riccio's series of the Divine Ladies, a group of 5 close friends who enjoy each other, a good mystery, and thier belief in the Wicca faith.

This particular book does not seem to be as up to par as the previous due to a couple of impressions I have. First of all, the ladies are supposed to be in thier late 50's/early 60's, yet thier speech is of people much older. The book could use a good 50 pages of editing to tighten up the story, and get rid of extraneous dialogue and a slow start. Also, I didn't enjoy the characters as much as the previous books, due to thier lack of 'fleshing out' and development.
OK, enough of that and onto the story itself. Very intriguing and different, with a great new man of mystery. THe protagonist and thier family definetly will be back with more tricks and hidden dangers. The story kicks into high gear after 100 pages, a bit long for this, but hang in and enjoy.

        Book Description

Though they are not just a recent phenomenon, during the past few decades new crop circles have been reported worldwide at the rate of about one per day, creating considerable controversy over their origin or cause. Theoretical experimental physicist Eltjo Haselhoff presents a comprehensive overview of these beautiful and mysterious formations. His research includes a scientific investigation of germination anomalies, the dead fly enigma, peculiar deposits, geometrical ratios, and balls of light. In addition, he reports on the first-person accounts of people who have witnessed their appearance and even ventures into the study of the psychic perspective. Haselhoff comes to some fascinating conclusions in the last chapter, 'Circular Arguments.' After reading this book, you will definitely agree with Conclusion Six: 'Something very strange going on.'

5 out of 5 stars If you can't be an eyewitness.......2007-01-11

Beautiful glossies of the past decade's most significant crop circles coupled with an excellent popular scientific approach to the phenomenon.
The mathematics of crop circles, one of the book's appendices, is easy enough to follow by anyone with a high school knowledge of trigonometry. This text is good-looking enough to display on a coffee table!

        5 out of 5 stars A Hearty Endorsement.......2005-08-02

If you are going to read about crop circles, start with this book. The book is well written, taut, and short. The math is explained very well and should not be intimidating. He very quickly cuts through the esoteric overlays of "little space men" and supernatural interpretations that clutter up so many books on this topic.

        5 out of 5 stars Nicely written.......2004-04-28

A well worthwhile look at crop circles. The author puts forward his hypothesis, and he does so convincingly. Backing his statements up with well designed experiments that have at least been published in the scientific literature. My only criticism is that the book is too short. For someone with 12 years experience in the field the author either is very good at summarising all of his conjectures, or he deliberately simplifies it into a huge picture fest in an attempt to sell more books. More examples and more analyses would not have gone astray. Most definately a nice book to look at, and a very entertaining read for a couple of hours.

        5 out of 5 stars Well Written!.......2003-07-03

Dr. Haselhoff has written one of the best books on the controversal subject of crop formations (and I have read most of them.) I have seen and heard him interviewed. He is a scientist, and as such presents his findings in a completely unbiased fashion. His conclusion: People may be making these patterns, but we have no idea how. We are unable to explain the uniform node lengthening found in the plants, balls of light that have been videoed and photographed many times, dead files stuck to the plants, numerous instances of camera and watch batteries dying in these fields, etc. If there were a trivial explanation for this mystery, we would have found it 20 years ago. Read this book and others on the subject if you are interested in what may be the most important ongoing mystery in the world today.

4 out of 5 stars Something is going on.......2003-05-16

If you have reached this page than you probably have more than a passing interest in the subject or phenomena known as crop circles. To take a quote from an old rock and roll( recently also sampled for hip-hop) song by Buffalo Springfield, "Something's happening here , what it is ain't exaclty clear." The Ph.D author explains some rather peculiar circumstances occurring throughout the globe, including the hoaxes, even those pertetuated by the media to the layman in a pretty easily digestable style. If you are like me, have a rudimentary background in science, not particularly linear in your thinking than this book will serve you well. All sides are presented. There were a few sections with graphs and such that were just a little to scientific for me but worthwhile nonetheless to get better insight into this unknown field that is growing in accumulated data. The book is NOT trying to convince you one way or the other as to the source of these mysterious symbols and the aftermath that results. What the author DOES do is present a concise overview of these occurrences and lets YOU be the judge as to the authenticity of this phenomena that goes obviously beyond ropes and ladders. There are no answers, some speculation and definitely some puzzling things going on. Check it out for yourself and YOU be the judge.

There are so many biographies of Sigmund Freud, not to mention the mountains of scholarly matter surrounding his theories, that it's hard to imagine a fresh, readable, convincing new approach to his life and work. Paul Ferris--an outsider who has never been psychoanalyzed, much less trained as an analyst--has done the trick. Agnostic about the true value of Freud's achievements, Ferris prefers to proceed on the reasonable assumption that Freud is worth studying sheerly because of his overarching influence on our culture. Consequently, the early chapters involve some fence-sitting, with unnamed fanatical acolytes and critics alike held at arm's length.

But nothing is so striking as the extent to which this mainstream biographer has learned the lessons of Freud's harshest critics. There is no apology--and not much surprise even--in the description of Freud's entanglement with (and indefensible defense of) the homicidal quack Wilhelm Fliess. Whatever else one may admire in Freud, Ferris has no trouble being straightforward about shabby motives, unprofessional behavior, or Freud's arrogance in matters about which he was sometimes almost comically ignorant. What praise this biography does have to offer, meanwhile, is qualified. Ferris says Freud's great achievement was getting us to take sex seriously, but seems to admit that he may have replaced ignorance with confusion. He also expresses well-grounded awe for Freud's writing ability and productivity, but implies, in a well-judged chapter on the Dora case, both that the application of his writing talent to science was a serious loss to imaginative literature and that losing him to literature might have been a blessed release for some of his patients. --Richard Farr

            Book Description

This startling book provides new insight into an increasingly controversial figure whose work has left an indelible mark on the modern world

Today, nearly sixty years after his death, the field of psychoanalysis still swarms with controversy about Sigmund Freud's career. His work has been picked apart by fellow theorists, who seek either to canonize his intellectual prowess or to vilify both the man and his work.

Paul Ferris's new biography avoids this fashionable polemic, attending to the details of Freud's personal existence. A balanced, fair-minded work, free from the technicalities of psychoanalytic jargon, Dr. Freud is a robust and sympathetic portrait-a stunning look at a complex soul.

2 out of 5 stars Highly readable but hardly objective.......2001-01-15

Paul Ferris has undoubtly written a highly readable biography of one of the icons of the XX century. The book may be broken down into three main parts: the first one shows Freud until his mid-life or so and focuses on Freud's obsessive drive for recognition; the second part, is a very superficial account of Freud's threories intertwinded with some irrelevant details of his life, and the third one is an account of the internal and external struggle of the psychoanalytic movement.

Ferris' writing style is polished and entertaining. However, after 100 pages or so, Ferris (who acknowledges to have no psychology or psychiatry background) loses his objectivity and starts to criticize and put down Freud's theories. This is not necessarily bad, but the criticism is on very superficial grounds while failing to place Freud and his thought in the proper context of the late XIX and early XX. Freud thought is only presented in its outline (which is something expected of a biography) but for the sake of simplicity and brevity the outline lacks a meaningful presentation of the issues behind Freud's theories. The oversimplification of the essence of Freud's thought makes it appear somewhat grotesque and irrational.

There has been much dispute on Freud as a "scientist" and psychoanalisis as a "science" and Ferris has a go at both. Unfortunately, Ferris forgets that both Freud and his thought fall within the concept of "social science" not "physical science", thus many of the theories and implications are based on case studies, which obviously carry highly individualised connotations some of which can or cannot be generalised to the entire population.

In summary, this book joins sides against Freudian thought and therefore hardly provides a truthful insight into the man and his theories. A reader looking for an introduction to Freudian thought is advised to look elsewhere. A reader looking for some some insight into the man will find plenty of biased, irrelevant and selectively chosen details that do not paint the entire character of Freud.

4 out of 5 stars Frank and honest........1999-11-11

This is the first biography that I have read (of any one) that has kept me interested to the last page. That says alot for the content and flow of the book. As a psychology student, I have studied Freud's theories. This book helped put it all in perspective, along side theries of Jung and Adler. It showed me how 'way out' his theories were for the time but how they had a certain logic given the type of patients he had and the attitiude towards sex at the time. It's a fascinating read - and strikes me as very frank and honest. There's no glamourising of the man himself - but why should there be.. It's a story of a man's life and an interesting one at that.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Peak into the Mind of Freud.......1999-09-16

This is a great biography. Though, the reader can find themselves lost at some times, the overall book is a wonderful peak into the mind of Dr. Freud. We glimpse Freud in new ways- through his own letters, his own shortcomings, his fears, his hopes, his dreams. The picture that history paints of an overlly egotistical man is blown away as we begin to see the human Freud, not the illustration of a sex-obsessed psychoanaylsis. We walk through Freud's pioneering days & can truly understand his outlook on life and the amazing gifts he has given to those who succeed him.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best modern biography of Freud........1998-08-29

Factual and at times irreverent, the chief value of this excellent biography is its objective examination of Freud's work, his accomplishments and his failings, his genius and his humanity. If you're a slavish worshiper of the Freud myth, don't read it. But if you want the truth, it will open your eyes while it amuses and entertains with a prose style that is in itself a delight.
