Customer Reviews:
Proud great niece!!.......2007-06-19
I first saw this book in a Borders and looked in it on a whim. Knowing that my great uncle had be awarded the medal of honor. I was happily surprised that he was in there (pg. 223) and even more to find he is also on the CD! My son never got to meet him since he passed away just before my son turned one so now I have a way of showing my son what his family has done! Great book many other great heroes in it. I will be buying more for my family and friends.
Incomplete.......2007-02-16
Not worth the price. It was a disappointment. It does not cover all the Medal of Honor recipient. It is incomplete. How can you forget Audi Murphy the most decorated person of any war.
best gift ever for anyone interested in heros.......2007-02-01
i bought one of these books for my husband for christmas and he read it from cover to cover in less than 5 days. it is now in his office and he has many people ask if they can stay a little longer to read after he has finished working on their vehicles. he bought one for a friend and he loves it also.
Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty.......2007-01-16
This book is a must for anyone whose interested in military history. The stories are truly inspiring.
A perfect gift for husband, brother or son.......2007-01-10
This book is exquisite--in every way. Together with the DVD, it provides powerful witness to acts of remarkable heroism. These rare individuals talk about the danger that unfolded around them and through which they emerged as heroes. They are spellbinding as they sweep us onto the battlefield with them. It is a unique opportunity to see that they are just like ourselves--unremarkable, until that moment when they knew what had to be done and then did it. This book is about those parts of our history when American individuals have risen to acts of honor; courage in the face of overwhelming fear; and, great humanity--poignantly told in their own words.

Customer Reviews:
Definatly a good read.......2007-07-05
This Ciaphus Cain novel was the first I have read, since then I have purchased all the rest. says something about it huh?
Cain just rules!.......2007-06-11
As with all the novels that involve Ciaphas they are just a wondeful rollercoaster ride. Some mild comedy at just the right time adds a warmth to the novel as well. Get it, you will love i promise.
Finally, Death or Glory makes sense........2007-05-27
To be honest, I wasn't terribly impressed with the last entry in the Cain archives. Death or Glory felt like a rehash of previous plot elements and storyline and reverted Ciaphas to his "old" state where he wasn't terribly interesting.
But with Duty Calls, we get a better idea of why Vail chose the last entry and we can definitely see how Cain himself is different partly perhaps due to his experiences with the 597th. I'm assuming that Death or Glory, Duty Calls and another book will make up another trilogy of books, a bit akin to how the first three Cain books were anagolous to the original "Founding" trilogy of Gaunt's Ghosts.
Looking forward for more, that's for sure.
Our favorite reluctant hero return........2007-05-24
Commissar Ciaphas Cain of the 597th Valhallan, our favorite reluctant hero, stumbles into action. Again. Along for the ride is his personal and odorous aide, Feric Jurgen. Jurgen's gift as a blank comes in handy, as does the huge melta weapon he so loves. This time Cain is assisting local forces on Periremunda to quell widespread civil disorder. Things turn out to be worse than Cain could have ever suspected. Inquisitor Amberley Vail is on the planet, though her presence is supposed to be a secret, following a lead to an ancient xenos artifact that Metheius had absconded with earlier. When it becomes apparent that Tyranids ('Nids) are not only already on the planet, but have already called in their Hive fleet, Cain knows that the frak has hit the fan around him again.
Commissar Cain becomes the public face of the Imperial Guard, thanks to the printsheets; something he truly hates to be. As such, assassins begin coming out of seemingly thin air, proving that Cain's troops have even more problems in the forms of genestealer hybrids and Psykers. Since 'Nids are bred for deception and camouflage, the horrors could be anywhere by now. To add to the chaos, The Order of the White Rose (convent of Battle Sisters) is being led by a woman named Enlantine who, to Cain's thinking, is out to prove that they can be psychotic Emperor-bothering harridans of the highest degree. To top it all off, Lieutenant Jenit Sulla is there and still attempting to batter the Gothic language into submissions with her lengthy narrations. How can the wily commissar ever hope to find the easy life he prefers?
**** This is the fifth installment of the Cain series, but all of you FNGs (frekking new guys) to the series will not find yourselves lost one bit. In fact, I have no doubts that you will scramble to locate the back list of Cain's saga. Afterwards, you will be eager for the advent of each new Cain adventure, just as I am.
Author Sandy Mitchell has done an incredible job of creating the main characters, especially of Cain who has become very real to me. Every time I hear his name I find myself smiling in memory of some sort of humorous situation he had managed to find himself within. Mitchell is to be commended for his achievement of bringing his characters to believable life. BRAVO! ****

More neo-Confederate idolotry.......2006-06-08
Upon graduating from West Point,a young Robert E. Lee put his left hand on the Bible, raised his right hand and swore he would bear true faith and allegiance to the United Stated of America. As an older, but not wiser man, he turned his back on the country he swore to defend and took up arms against it. So much for "sterling nobility." This book is the usual neo-Confederate claptrap that has been making the rounds ever since the war ended.
There's only one word for this book, and I can't say it here..........2006-05-07
This book was deceitful and misleading, like most Confederate propaganda. J. Steven Wilkins was cunning in his choice and presentation of facts. If someone with no knowledge of the Civil War read this book, he would be left with an absolutely incorrect perspective of Robert E. Lee, the institution of slavery, and the Civil War in general.
First, there are inconsistencies between "Call of Duty" and... "Call of Duty"! At one point in the book, Wilkins quotes Lee as saying, "If the slaves of the South were mine, I would surrender them all without a struggle, to avert this war." Later, Wilkins claims that Lee was offended and hurt that anyone thought slavery had anything to do with the war. So answer me this...how could freeing slaves avert a war that had nothing to do with slavery?
Another instance where the book contradicts itself is regarding race relations. Wilkins tries to sell the idea that Southern whites and Southern slaves lived in perfect harmony, respecting each other without the slightest presence of racism. Once again, later in the book this changes...Wilkins tells us of a church in Richmond whose attendees were shocked by a Negro who went up to take Communion! None of the churchgoers, except for Lee, as the story goes, wanted to be the first one to participate with a colored man. How is this possible in a society where racism is absent? Wilkins tries to blame this on Reconstruction, but I doubt a society could go from having no racism whatsoever to this degree of racism in such a short period of time.
The book also contradicts history...notably, regarding Robert Lee and slavery. The book says that Lee never seemed to have owned more than six slaves. This is not true. Wesley Norris, one of Lee's slaves, says in an account that almost 70 slaves were inherited by Lee upon the death of Lee's father-in-law.
Following in the said account, Wesley Norris tells the story of him and his sister Mary, who tried to escape the plantation after Lee inherited it. Upon being caught, Lee took it upon himself to "teach them a lesson they would never forget." He had them stripped to the waist, flogged, and thoroughly washed in brine. We see a little glimpse of Christian chivalry peeking out of Lee as he only had Mary receive twenty lashes, whereas Wesley received fifty. This is far from the compassionate Robert Wilkins would have us know! Wesley Norris's account can be found in "Slave Testimony: Two Centuries of Letters, Speeches, and Interviews, and Autobiographies".
The book also implies that Lee opposed slavery. However, the supposed "proof-text" for this actually tells us quite the opposite. In the text of a letter Lee sent to his wife, which is printed in "Call of Duty", Lee actually defends slavery. Lee tries to distort the gross institution of slavery into some kind of mission work. Slavery was Christianizing the Negroes, and preparing them for freedom, and to seek to free Negroes from the clutches of slavery was to shake your fist at God, or so Lee reasons. This is ridiculous, considering how many missionaries of all religions have successfully converted people without enslaving them, and yet it is the rationale used by Lee, Wilkins, and so many other Southern partisans who seek to defend the South by justifying slavery.
"Call of Duty" makes a god of Robert E. Lee, condemns the North, and justifies slavery with no regard for historical, logical, or moral facts. The Southern partisan will love it.
Ordered of the Lord..........2005-09-17
A great opportunity is afforded any reader introduced to the Leaders In Action Series, and the refined biography of Robert E. Lee serves as an excellent first choice.
Though written in a non-confrontational style, enough facts contradict the popular notions of Lee, the Civil War, {or the Southern appelation: The War between the States}, slavery, and the northern view of 'slavery and the South' to compel serious examination of the historical facts.
It is no secret in Christian circles that Lee was an ardent disciple of the Lord Jesus, striving his entire life to follow the way of the Lord. That the General was against slavery is not as well known.
Author J. Steven Wilkins' notation that Lincoln emancipated only the slaves in the enemy states held in rebellion, while leaving northern slaves to their chains is a topic that has layed untroubled since that President's proclamation of fame.
Lee's Christian character and military genius are well chronicled in this immaculately manicured biography. Easy reference searches are made a joy by the editor's finely outlined table of contents, chronology of Lee's life and additional study helps.
A historical work of value for the academic of a number of disciplines. A study of integrity unfolded into the Christian walk.
Well done to Pastor Wilkins, though his study undoubtedly made it's own reward. Acknowledgements to those savvy enough to see not only the need for such a series, but wise enough to include enough detail in each volume to demand further consideration.

Hooray for Lee ! Boo for Wilkins ? :-(.......2001-08-26
Any accurate portrayal of Robert E. Lee, certainly one of our country's finest leaders, should definitely move anyone with an ounce of common sense to an enormous appreciation for this most outstanding human being. Lee's inspiring faith in God, his leadership by example, and lifelong message is one of love and honor. His own words and letters best exemplify this fact, and this author's liberal use of them brings it all home in this short, succinct work. However, be forewarned that Wilkins adds his own additional preaching far removed from the Gospels, most sadly detracting from an accurate historical perspective on Lee by adding his own self-serving distortions on slavery. The historical record is clear: Lee found slavery objectionable and looked forward to the day when it would end. None-the-less, Wilkins tries very hard to rationalize slavery as something good, as if his sad excuses are necessary in order to make Lee look acceptable.... so far from the truth! Wilkins does our great man, Lee, along with the rest of America, a dis-service by his disgusting blabberings. Let's hear it for Robert E. Lee, and not taint his image with such dribble. Most other Lee biographies will serve us more fairly and honorably.
If ever there was a man who followed Christ's example...........2001-08-09
If ever there was a man who followed Christ's example it was Robert E. Lee. This book illustrates such a man. It illustrates the strength of character that men lack in our society today....lacking even in our churches. This book is a must read for all men who are interested to know what a Christian gentleman is. Well done Reverend Wilkins. May Lee's example, which you have illustrated, set an example for others as it has for me and bring glory to God.

Combat.......2007-01-16
I like to play this game all the time, it is really realistic to me.
Good for singleplay... a waste of money for multi........2006-11-26
I tend to buy the strategy guides, more than anything else, to build up my multiplayer game for Xbox Live. I want to learn the intricacies of different maps, learn where weapons and power-ups are, and compare the loadouts available in multiplayer.
Unfortunately, the multiplayer coverage in this book is pretty limp... a footnote, at the end of the book. The maps in this book are micro-sized. The authors don't give any real tips for individual maps. They do have a few interesting tips, but not enough to justify buying this book.
I usually expect much better from Bradygames... their books have given me a powerful advantage with other titles. But the strategy guide for COD3 is just not worth purchasing. Move on to something else.

COD 2 Bradygames Guide.......2006-02-25
This guide helped me to really enjoy the game. I have several Bradygames Guides and all are first class.
As useful as an empty ammo clip.......2005-11-23
Since I had never played a WWII shooter before, I thought it would be a good idea to pick this up when I bought Call of Duty 2. I've gotten hooked on strategy guides in recent years anyway and generally find the maps and other info very helpful. Unfortunately, the Call of Duty 2 Official Strategy Guide is the first one I've ever purchased that I consider a total waste of money.
To begin with, the game itself is actually very straightforward and easy to figure out. The strategy required to finish a given scenario is generally obvious. While I often died during missions, I knew what to try next in order to succeed.
On those few occasions when I felt more challenged, I found the book to be no help at all. They tend to give a very general walk through of the mission along with maps that were very difficult to follow. There was never enough detail to be of any real help. In the end, I figured out how to survive and complete all of the missions on my own just as I would have without the book.
In the final analysis, this book will not justify the money you would spend on it. Call of Duty 2 is challenging in its own way, but it is not a game that demands a clue book. The manual itself is attractive but is ultimately filled with useless filler. Save the money and use it to buy the expansion pack for Call of Duty 2 that will doubtless be released in the coming months.

Book Description
Before a nation declared war, one force was winning an unknown fight
The war is a nightmare that haunts them to this day: disgrace, abandonment, retreat. But years before the protests turned the tide of public opinion--before the politicians hijacked the battleplan and ensured ultimate failure--the U.S. Navy SEALs were hitting a once arrogant enemy hard, relentlessly...and right where he lived. No longer could NVA guerillas move unchecked across invisible borders. And no longer were they safe in their own backyard. Before the war in Vietnam exploded in its full fury, a fearless chosen few were already bloodied veterans of a savage secret war.
At China Beach, while the CIA plays shadow games with men all too willing to die for their country, two American warriors wait for the opportunity to prove their mettle. In two years the floodgates of war will burst open at Tonkin Gulf. But for a pair of SEALs--meticulously trained and ready to embark upon an impossible mission behind enemy lines--duty is calling...now!
Customer Reviews:
Good read but not the best.......2003-10-30
I liked this book despite the mistakes that were made in the writing. One of the obvious mistakes is the change in name of Dave Coffer to Paul Coffer. The other mistake that I can think of is in the beginning when Gunn's team is being picked up by the sub. 12 knots is not a slow speed, once can water ski at 12 knots. Maybe Mr. Riker meant 1 knot or 2 knots but mistyped. Otherwise, I liked this book. I like how we got to see more of the Vietnamese characters in this book and learn more of what drove some of them to fight.
Not Quite Up To Par.......2001-03-20
H. Jay Riker is one of my favorite authors, and I have the entire SEALs, the Warrior Breed series. But while "Duty's Call" was good, I am afraid it was not quite up to par. A lot of it was simply rehashing stuff from other books, and that gets old after a while, although I can understand it. A reader doesn't always start a series with the first book. I noticed that the character of David Coffer, creator of the UDTs and a familiar character from "Silver Star" and "Purple Heart," has been renamed Paul Coffer. I also expected the story to focus more on Arthur Gunn and his death. That is the direction the prologue led me to believe the story would take. Instead, we find out in the epilogue that he died a few years after the story takes place. Overall, good, but not as good as I expected. I hope the next one's better.
A Descriptive Portrayal of Covert Operations.......2001-02-11
When I picked up this book I was afraid of another "shoot up the bad guys and go home" plot, but Riker proved me wrong. Duty's call proved to illustrate different aspects of covert operations. He tells of hardships that happen involving SEAl members outside of direct combat situations. While excessive repetition of Tangeretti's family relationships and his fallen comrade, Hank Richardson, set a mood of slight irratibility. Overall the novel draws a clear and exciting picture of American and Southern Vietnamese special operations during the early stages of the Vietnam War.
More Like Publisher's Call.......2001-01-18
I got the impression that Mr. Riker has a committment to the publisher for "X" amount of books and this one was just a filler until he could write something else. As much as I admire what the SEALS did in Vietnam, enough already, this is getting repetitive. I'm sure that the SEAL teams have been involved in other actions since Vietnam, and I believe that now is the time to start to write about them.
As far as the whole Tangretti/Richardson/Veronica thing, enough already! If I wanted to read a soap opera or bodic ripper, I would. I also find myself tired of the whole Steve Tangretti mental gymnastics that are used to "justify" his various daliances throughout the series. If I want to read about this sort of thing I'm sure there are several books available in the marraige section of Amazon. Stick to the main story, leave out the breast beating already.
I await the next book in the series, if it looks to be more of the same, then so much for Mr. Riker and the SEAL series.
Duty's Call -- A Step Down.......2000-12-30
I have read most all of H. Jay Riker's Warrior Breed series and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them including Duty's Call. This one is a small step down from his others, Silver Star, Purple Heart, etal., at least in my opinion. There is a lot of flashback filler information from previous releases that I found myself glossing over because I had encountered it multiple times in his previous works. (How many times does Hank Richardson's and Tangretti's relationship need to be described in the same work.) Some of this is inevitable to set the proper stage but I thought there was a little too much this time. For a fictional work though, the frustrations that our military must have felt in trying to execute a solution to a military problem while the real war was in fighting the politics of the time were articulated quite well. I enjoyed the book and look forward to future works by Riker.

Customer Reviews:
UncleSamsKidsin When Duty Calls.......2005-06-27
The author did a terrific job offering helpful advice to reduce and deal with the many emotions that children and their parents are feeling when a deployment occurs. I could totally relate to the entire book and I highly recommend it to anyone getting ready to deploy. I also recommend her newest book Uncle Sam's Kids in Moving Again Mom. As a military family we move every three years and found this to be helpful.
I give it a two thumbs up!!
Disappointing but still usable.......2005-03-08
I would not encourage people to spend money on this book, but instead to borrow it from the library or someone who already owns it.
While the theme of separation from daddy is what I wanted, this book was pretty cheesy. The son gets a real name. "Nick" while the daughters are "Breezy" and "Lil M." The boy is shown on almost every page while we see the girls only a few times and often in profile or off to the side.
I also would have preferred a book that wasn't focused exclusively on the Navy.
My daughter kept asking where the little girl was in the book. I'm glad I have a few more months to locate books that better suit our specific needs.
I gave the kids the names of my daughter and her friends, and changed much of the wording while reading it out loud. Even for a children's book, the writing is mediocre at best.
I did like that the author showed the father saying goodbye to his children and giving them a way to stay connected with him. I also liked that she depicted the family working on a care package and making "Welcome Home" banners.
For Navy/Marine families with sons this would work well, but the rest of us will have to add some other books into the mix as we prepare our children for deployment.
Uncle Sam's Kids in When Duty Calls.......2005-02-11
Uncle Sam's Books in When Duty Calls is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to use it as a tool to explain Daddy or Mommy being gone to serve.
