5 out of 5 stars A Great Book........2005-04-12

This was one of my favorite books by Commander X. He brought up quite a bit of unique perspective and information not found anywhere else. I especially enjoyed the EDOM (Electronic Dissolution of Memory); the RHIC (Radio-Hypnotic Intra-Cerebral Control) and the writings on the separation and physics of consciousness. Chapter six puts it all together, and the book is worth it just for this chapter. I am glad I bought it and found it very interesting.

2 out of 5 stars who really knows?.......2002-10-23

I must say that I found most of this book a little far fetched for my belief system. Actually a lot far fetched. I can't comprehend Germans on the moon in 1944 nor Nazi bases under Antarctica. Nazi super cities in South America? Nazi contact with Aliens in the late 1800s? Where there Nazi's in the late 1800s? Guess I'll have to find that out first.

But some of the theories could be true. Many have speculated about the one world government takeover that may or may not be coming true as things evolve. The theories on gun control are interesting.

While I can't completely ignore everything in this book I beleive that most of it is quite a stretch. Pure fiction. The sources he sights are others who write about the same thing. Everytime you might think he is going to offer some concrete proof he hides behind the old "if I tell you who I am I will die" line. However, I found the chapter on Tesla quite interesting. And many of his statements in the chapter have been verified. So, is the entire book true since one chapter seems more verifiable? This is why I could not give it a one star rating. There seems to be some truth in this book. The problem becomes figuring out where it is.

A masterpiece told by Commander X with a simple honesty who, by his subject matter, is probably talking in public only very briefy and probably with finality. A world sold without a public sale under new ownership neither friendly nor benign. Commander X is pulling no punches... and dead god in the sky help us if he is.

Stupid book written by someone who might possibly need therapy. Who is in control of the earth, Aliens or rich humans? Did you know that the United Nations wants to take over the world so they can "legalize all drugs and pornography", and "depopulate all large cities into camp systems in the countryside" (page 139). If you want a book about one world government then buy a different one, this is silly kids stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Alien Manifesto: The Lie is Out There .......2006-03-07

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" -John 8:44
This book appears to reveal the truth but it is actually disinformation from a government agent. It is a vehicle for New Age/Satanic religion. Like all good lies, it includes a lot of true material to fool the spiritually ignorant, but it leaves out the most important hidden truth behind the UFO/alien reality.
In this book, the MJ12 conspiracy group needs to protect the world from the "truth". They were told by "aliens" that there is no God and the human race was created by alien geneticists called the "Jexovah". This is the same lie perpetuated by Zecharia Sitchin and others. (I have no doubt that the faithless MJ12 group really believes the demonic lie portrayed in this book.)
The whole concept promoted in Alien Rapture is designed to undermine Christianity. We are even told about a superior alien religion. Every tenet of Christianity is replaced with a clever substitute explanation. Were we created by God? No, by aliens. Are we a fallen race in need of Jesus Christ, the savior? No, we are just genetically modified apes with flawed DNA. Can Christ save your fallen soul in this lifetime as Christians know he can? Why no, the aliens made all that up to control us, and all you can do is reincarnate over and over and save yourself by perfecting your own soul and becoming godlike yourself. (Christians know this is Satan's oldest lie: that you can be like God--if you just eat the forbidden fruit!)
Furthermore, according to this book, our not-so-heavenly fathers are busy fixing our DNA and preparing to take us to a new age of enlightenment. Forget Jesus Christ! All hail the Jexovah, our creators and our saviors! Just follow these so-called aliens (fallen angels) because they know better than us, and they will take us higher. I quote from page 193 of Alien Rapture: "Perfect human genes are a rare occurrence, but Jesus was a chosen one, and he attained the [Alien] Rapture. And so did Moses, Elijah, Mohammed, Krishna, and many other great religious and humanitarian leaders." That's right, they are all rolled into one here. Jesus is not even given higher status than Mohammed, who was a pedophile and a murderer! According to the aliens, Jesus was just a better monkey than the rest of us.
The aliens even champion a new world order with one global government and religion, where the "defective" humans (not the chosen ones) all die off so the new and improved humans alone survive the alien rapture. All earth's problems will be solved if we just bow down to them. (Read Global Tyranny Step by Step by William Jasper for the truth about world government.) In reality, this book glorifies the dream of Lucifer and all his Illuminati pawns going back to the times of the Nephilim--to corrupt the human gene pool. Before the Great Flood, fallen angels procreated with human women in order to corrupt the creation of God. The goal: to remake the human race in Lucifer's image, removed from God. This book also demonizes patriots and conservatives.
So why do readers believe the faith-destroying alien manifesto in this book? Because of massive mental conditioning by movies and television. Christianity is ridiculed and aliens are worshipped as superiors. Salvation from aliens is part of the strong delusion of the Antichrist. To believe a lie, you have to reject the truth. To follow the Antichrist you have to reject the Word of God. Only the spiritually dead would trust a soulless space alien more than Jesus Christ. Read this book if you want a glimpse of the lie that will cause millions of people to abandon God and embrace damnation.
"And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." -2 Thessalonians 2:11-12

4 out of 5 stars This Book Should Be A Movie!, .......2005-12-05

This one oughta be a movie, folks. Co-authored by Ed Fouche and Brad Steiger, they deserve to make a million bucks, if Hollywood is sharp enough to option the work. Written as a novel, Ed Fouche is able to take advantage of his 25+ years of experience, working at and within Area 51, the top secret Nevada test site run by the Government. Due to security clearances Ed felt it necessary to tell the story as a novel, and what a story it is! At least this way it gives the Government "plausible deniability", and Ed gets to live a little longer.

The hero is Joe Green, obviously an alter ego for Ed Fouche. The story develops that we are not alone, and Joe discovers that the Government is not telling us the truth about virtually everything, particularly the aliens among us. Read between the lines, MJ-12 is a sinister plot, leading to developmental sub-plots at Area 51, where the successor to the SR71, the SR75, is built. Hence the need for a 6 mile long runway, as the 75 degree sweepback on the aircraft's wings do not provide much lift at takeoff speeds.

The usual gunmen, professional killers, torturers and psycotics abound, as does a New Age preacher by the name of Page St. John. St. John gives a new, and entirely acceptable, meaning to " the Rapture ", which is plausible, possible and believable.

Aliens are there, the Jexovah, with their mother ships and their scoutcraft, here to help us. Unlike Hollywood, there are no bug-eyed monsters or giant lizards drooling from toothy jaws. There are some tough times coming, and the Jexovah are here to help us get ready and change in a positive fashion.

Without giving anything away, the superb technology shines through, for those who seek it. Read it as a thought-provoking piece of entertainment, based in fact, liberally splashed with the thoughts of those who work with and investigate alien technology. Worth every penny of the price, it will make you think, as well as entertain. One can only hope that there will be a follow on book, giving us more information on the TR-3B, the SR75 & 74, (all Project Aurora aircraft), anti-gravity units and the super-secret bases such as Papoose Lake. Not to mention MJ-12, the Jexovah, the Chosen One and last but not least, the Rapture. "Tain't what you think, folks!". On a scale of 1 to 10, a definite 8-9 in my opinion.

1 out of 5 stars Usual stuff.......2005-08-17

I was expecting a good science fiction book (look at the price)...to read through the weekend, however, it was like reading a very cheap and fast written novel. Usual conspiracy stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Fair 'movie' with dangerous message.......2005-06-13

This reads like a B-movie action thriller. It seems to be written especially for US 'X-files' type fans. The first reviewer has a pretty good description of that aspect of it.
However, it seems to be putting over a dangerously mixed message. These nasty little Alien Grey types are just that - nasty and unpleasant and with their own agenda, unfriendly to humans and the Earth. However their 'creators' the 'Jexovah'(yes like Jehovah) are at first poor victims of their own stupidity on their own planet which they destroyed. Then they are trying to manipulate and take over humanity on Earth (to destroy her as well?) for their own ends, with the 'helpless but paranoid evil' tendancies of the US govt and MJ12. Then they're trying to 'save this planet' through their 'prophet' who has been abducted countless times by them and 'reprogrammed with psychic healing powers'. Tosh. Utter nonsense.

It all ends too 'nicely and neatly'; the bad guys 'get dead' the 'good guys' (who exactly are they?) win. It has the overwhelming implausibility of both 'X-files' and '24'. Its a fun read, that's for sure, but don't be fooled about the 'nasty little Greys'who are 'really quite friendly', or taken in by their 'Christian/Jewish fundamentalist-type Jexovah helpers'. There's some very nasty subconscious manipulation/disinformation in this book. Take it as a fun read but remain VERY aware.

4 out of 5 stars Hey guys, lighten up. .......2005-03-28

If you buy any non-fiction or fiction work about UFOs or Aliens DON'T EXPECT it to be GREAT LITERATURE. Let me make a couple of points:

1. Don't expect a REAL INSIDER to break his secret's oaths or non-disclosure agreements. According to US AFRs and DoD Regs, such a person cannot directly relate anything that he read, worked on, or saw that was Secret or above. However, if his best friend or a trusted source tells him what he already knows, then it is second hand information. That is obviously why the authors used a fiction format to DISCLOSE information, which we would otherwise not have known.

2. If a book is not published by a major publishing company with wide ranging resources, then expect it to have an occasional error. There are web sites which post detailed lists of errors and mistakes of major movies which cost over 100 million dollars to make. A mistake is not a brick wall, it's just a mistake.

This book has a nice little story that really is entertaining, but it manages to discuss a lot of the secret methods, procedures, and happenings in the DoD's Black Budget or Deep Black programs and blend them into the story for the novice. And if you're a UFO buff like myself, I've seen the Black Triangle once outside of Tempe Arizona at night, then you will recognize that the authors information on this vehicle is more detailed than you will read anywhere else. I'd say this is one of the top five UFO books in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great series.......2002-10-08

Very rarely can a series of novels keep up the quality that the first book promises. In this case it is even the other way round. The more we follow the continuation of the story the more suspenseful the plot gets. Maybe that the characters are somewhat wooden and erratic in the descriptions of their actions and feelings now and then (Turcotte and others), but the plot in itself is consistent and conceivable. The series would be one book if it were not too long as it even follows the classical concept of the unity of time. But this is what makes this series such a marvellous read.

5 out of 5 stars This is really getting good now.......2002-06-25

The author isn't going to win a Nobel Prize for literature, but Area 51: The Sphinx has me more excited about this series than ever, which is quite an accomplishment for a series already at least 1400 pages long. There's not much point in describing the plot since this is the fourth Area 51 novel to be released. I must admit the plot has grown quite complicated by now, and I'm sometimes unsure which alien-controlled or alien-influenced groups are which because they are all so mysterious and inscrutable. It would be easy to take the basic premise of alien contact and let the story flop around like a dead fish, with predictable results, but the author has long ago transcended the UFO theme and laced his storytelling with unpredictable twists and turns, continually bringing in fresh new excitement and potentialities of earth's greatest mysteries, such as the fabled Hall of Records beneath the Sphinx, the Ark of the Covenant, and lost cities in the Amazon. I love the way he has brought a Russian Section 4 (read Soviet Majestic-12) operative into the heart of the activity, playing with the trust factor between the American and Russian agents like a literary yo-yo. In this novel, the very fate of the United States rests in the hands of the unlikely US-Russian duo. It is true that the author makes no real effort to tie up any loose ends at the end of this story, but I don't care by this point because I'm already poised to pounce on the fifth novel and keep plunging ahead. The introduction of nanotechnology by the "bad guys," the introduction of the Ark of the Covenant, the inevitable search for the Holy Grail, and even a quick tease about Noah's Ark are just a few of the many things that have me running to Book 5. I can see how some readers might become frustrated with the prospect of a long-drawn out story, especially since much of the "truth" of the events written of here will not become apparent until a later time, but I am perpetually perched right on the end of my seat. If you read up through book three (The Mission) and felt your interests flagging a little bit, I urge you to take a chance on this fourth novel because I think it will more than recapture your earlier interest. Personally, I hope this series never ends.

4 out of 5 stars Better than previous books in the series.......2002-03-27

The Sphinx, book 4 of the Area 51 series, is overall a better novel than the previous ones I've read. This is not really a sequel, but a continuation of the overall story. The author has begun to deviate somewhat from the central storyline, but he makes it work.

This one involves the supposition that the Ark of the Covenant lies beneath the Sphinx. Lisa Duncan's quest is to determine whether or not it really resides there. The usual "aliens tracking humans trying to keep them from learning the truth" occurs here and the storyline builds to a big conclusion.

The book is not a 5-star book due to its dragging in parts and the author trying to tie too many things together. Some of them work and some don't. Things become more unrealistic in the following book -- "The Grail". Read this one if you found the earlier books readable, but don't start with this one. Otherwise, some of the subplots will make little to no sense.

4 out of 5 stars Best since the original.......2002-03-23

Just when I was about to give up reading the series (after a very disappointing book 3 -- The Mission), Doherty picks up the pace, raises the stakes, and tightens up the story in this very exciting sequel. I can't wait to start The Grail (book 5).

2 out of 5 stars More mediocre paranoia fiction.......2001-11-16

This is actually the best in the series (at least through the first four, which is all I intend to read). Doherty is actually showing glimmers of understanding how to write in this story. At some points, his characters are no longer one dimensional, but actually show two dimensions. There is still no depth, however.

Unfortunately, as Doherty improves some of his writing, he also seems to have given up in telling a complete story. All he does is make things more complicated and doesn't resolve much by the end of the story. For any true fan of science fiction - a person who has read the masters of the genre - this work seems only to have one purpose: to make other books seem better in comparison.

If you wish to read good alien invasion stories by real writers, try "The Visitors" by Clifford Simak, "Footfall" by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, "The Monitors" by Keith Laumer, "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" by Jack Finney or "Childhood's End" by Arthur Clarke. Any of these works (just the first few that came off the top of my head) show more talent in a single chapter than Doherty does in four volumes.

Book Description

Area 51 was the most secret place in America.  But it was only one piece in a puzzle that stretched from Egypt's Pyramids to the mysterious face on Mars...

Part of a plan begun 5,000 years ago by those who had been here before.  And are coming back.

When scientist Lisa Duncan and Special Forces officer Mike Turcotte uncovered the stunning truth about Area 51--a "training area" on Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada--they opened up a Pandora's box kept hidden from the American public for fifty years.

What they uncovered explained decades of UFO sightings--and the most baffling mysteries of history from the Great Pyramid to Easter Island.

But these findings were only the beginning. Now a signal had come in from outer space: our first contact with extraterrestrials. The message said they were coming. It didn't say they had been here before...and left something behind. But what waited deep within the Rift Valley of Ethiopia and inside an ancient Chinese tomb would determine Earth's fate. The dawning of a new age.  Or the destruction of us all...

Robert Doherty is a pseudonym for a bestselling writer of military suspense thrillers. He is also the author of Area 51 and The Rock, and is currently working on a third novel in the Area 51 series, entitled Area 51: The Mission.

5 out of 5 stars A Great read.......2005-08-10

I didn't know what to expect when I first opened the pages of this novel, but I gotta say this was a great book. I found it to be an absolute page turner and found it very suspsenseful. I would deifnitely recommend this book to any sci fi fan, and the best news is, that this is only book one in an entire series of books. Yeah, as you read on the plot seems more and more outrageous, butwith the unexpected twists and turns the suspense is overwhelming and much rewarded by the reader throughout the series. I would recommend this book and continuing series to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Area 51: The Reply.......2004-07-25

A fun easy read and great follow-up to the first book. I ordered the third book immediately upon finishing this one.

2 out of 5 stars I think the author owes it to their reader.......2004-07-21

to give them a better ending than "To Be Continued".

The science is (very) shakey. The drama a bit too cliche. Entertaining reading none the less, provided expectations are set correctly.

But the ending, please, something better than "Go Buy My Next Book"?

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first book!.......2002-09-10

Fast action and unexpected twists of the action guarantee an exciting reading adventure. As usual the historical and esoteric backgrounds are well researched, and together with a realistic setting they end up in an almost credible plot. The characters are again credible and where they are stereotypes, they help to develop the plot and as creative instruments add to the tension that marks the book from the first to the last pages. One of the best in its genre.

4 out of 5 stars The aliens are coming! The aliens are coming!.......2002-06-18

This second novel in the Area 51 series is another action-packed, suspenseful read. The story begins where the first novel ended. The familiar characters thought their problems would be over once they brought down Majic-12 and succeeded in averting disaster in the form of an alien attack; in fact, their problems have just begun. The "guardian" discovered under Easter Island has sent out a message into space, and very soon scientists detect a reply message coming from--ta da, the Cydonia region of Mars. This story starts a little slow, hampered somewhat by the need for the author to refresh the memories of those having read the first book. The message from Mars says the aliens are coming to earth with peaceful intentions, but Mike Turcotte, Lisa Duncan, Professor Nabinger, and Kelly Reynolds must determine if that is true. New alien sites are being discovered, with the two most important being in an ancient Chinese mountain tomb and in Africa's Great Rift Valley. Our heroes rush all over the planet, gaining access to the two main alien sites by way of some thrilling commando-raid actions. They get some assistance from an entirely new secret group called STAAR, a group even Majic-12 knew nothing about. Racing to get more information, our heroes must determine whether or not the aliens on their way from Mars are indeed the friendly ancient astronauts who helped save the earth thousands of years earlier or if they are members of the rebel group that mutinied against the ancient mission and remain intent on destroying our planet.

With this book, the standard type of government conspiracy ideas give way to novel new suggestions and possibilities. The reader joins the characters in trying to figure out who everyone is, who they are working for, and whether or not their intentions are peaceful. The addition of a new ultra-secret group beyond Majic-12 is complicated by the fact that the members appear and act differently than normal human beings. Some readers may not like the final few chapters because the reader is being constantly thrown back and forth between different events, but I felt this did much to add to the suspense of the concluding pages. I most enjoyed the description of covert forces activities; I have no way of knowing how true to life the author's descriptions are, but they do engross the reader in their details (especially when the inevitable major problems pop up to endanger the missions). After a slow start, the author really puts his hooks into you by the halfway point, making this a book you don't want to put down. It doesn't really matter that the whole future of earth is in the hands of a special forces officer, archaeologist, and political appointee of a President who is rarely heard from in the story, or that a lowly reporter has basic carte blanche access to the heart of the ultra-secret Area 51 headquarters. The author knows how to tell a story, and he continually injects mystery and suspense into a story that could easily have become stale in the hands of a lesser writer. Two books into the series, the story continues to grow even more interesting and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Good SiFi Reading.......2007-08-01

Since i've read the first book of R. Doherty, The Rock, and now "The Mission" i really can not put the book down. The story grabs you and you want to know what goes on next. I have just ordered the rest of the series from Amazon.Com and i will be probably be let down that the reading will be over. I think the book is great and I hope other SiFi fans will to.

1 out of 5 stars Give me a break!.......2006-04-13

I read the first two books and I thought that they were great. Now I have reached the end of the line. I bought all of the Area 51 books in advance, but after reading The Mission the rest can sit and gather dust. It was poorly written, rushed together, and was one of the most boring reads that I have ever suffered through. I am a marathon reader. When I start a book it usually is finished within a day, sometimes two. This one took me about 7 weeks. I had to take mental breaks and read other books. Then after some time passed I would pick this one up and a bottle of Bayer, and force myself through the next fifty pages. This guy should have stopped after the first book.

I hate recaps!!!!! Nobody is going to start reading a series with the third book! There is no point in recapping the first two. It isn't fair to the people that want to read the next installment. Half of the book is filled with recaps. There are too many plots that should have been excluded. Keep it simple. This guys writting is all over the place. In one chapter he will jump around between five different story lines and then back again. Geez!

2 out of 5 stars Thats All.......2004-04-25

This third volume in the series is the one that killed it for me. Halfway through this book is when i realized what a chore it was to read. After 150 pages of rehashing the first two books in this series i put it down for good. The author should perhaps stick to the military thrillers and leave science fiction to the ones better qualified in the genre.

3 out of 5 stars More Great Escapism From Doherty.......2004-02-16

This series is always fun to read. And The Mission is probably a little more involved of a story than the previous two. Besides finding out there are groups that are in cahoots with the alien Airlia, there's also a devastating plague spreading throughout South America. I loved all the obstacles Doherty put in the way of Special Forces Captain Mike Turcotte in trying to find out who's responsible for the plague and how to stop it. At times you seriously wonder if he and his buddies are going to get out of this alive. Then there are the always cool re-writes of history that show how much of an influence the Airlia have had on humanity, including starting the Black Death in the Middle Ages and pushing the Inquisition. Some pretty decent action too, especially the assault on Devil's Island. Look forward to continuing on with this series.

4 out of 5 stars Very imaginative and a fun read.......2003-04-04

I very much enjoyed this and the other books in the Area 51 series. Granted, no book is perfect, and readers will without doubt find their share of weaknesses, but I found the premise of the series to be enhanting and the easy flow of the characters to be refreshing. Were I to log a complaint, it would be for the frequent harsh language used in the first book, and the less frequent harsh language used in the second. Thank goodness by the third RD had figured out that few if any books need gross explitives to make a good story. If you're looking for serious science, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a fun read, these are great books.

If you liked the old 1970's show "In Search of " with Leonard Nimoy you will LOVE this book. It was a ton of fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars truly enjoyable !!! great read!!!.......2007-08-27

This is the first book I read by Robert Doherty and was very pleased. I used to read SciFi as a kid but left it because the talent of writers was thin after Asimov passed away and most of the stories were more silly then interesting tangents. This book reminded me a lot of x-files. It grabs you and you can't wait to see what the next page brings!!! I couldn't wait to start the next book in the series!!!

4 out of 5 stars Imginative intrigue and action.......2007-08-07

Area 51 is a fast paced and interesting book that is one of the more imaginative books I have read. The author spun a web that tied together many different popular mysteries into a single threaded story. I was genuinely surprised and pleased to find such things as Easter Island, crop circles, the pyramids at Giza, foo fighters, Atlantis and, of course, Area 51, all seamlessly linked together into a unified storyline that flowed quite naturally.

The book's only short coming might be that the characters are somewhat flat, but given the amount of information that one must assimilate to link all of the plot elements together into a single, fluid stream of events, this might actually add to the book rather than take away from it. In other words, if the pages had been spent trying to deepen the characters, it might have bogged the book's pace down and made it a slower and less enjoyable read.

In summary, for readers that are looking to form deep bonds with characters, this may not be for you, but for readers seeking a fast paced thrill ride of intrigue, action and mysterious folk lore icons, this is a must read.

3 out of 5 stars Saturday Matinee Material.......2007-07-23

As has been noted in numerous reviews of this series, the material rises to the level of Saturday matinee, Buck Rogersesque serial fare. Not that I have anything against this type of material- I enjoyed it enough to buy the entire series. However, don't buy it expecting great depth or meat. What you can expect is Mr. Doherty to move the action along at a brisk pace, clever (if sometimes overreaching) intertwining of just about every myth and legend under creation, and characters so shallow even the auther has no qualms writing them out of the story abruptly and with regularity. But hey, this is Saturday matinee we're talking about here. A caution to the hardcore military fiction fans out there: for an ex-Green Beret, Mr. Doherty displays an apalling lack of familiarity with non-personal weapons systems. I was able to suspend enough disbelief to enjoy "bouncers" as personal taxis for the main characters, but had a few moments of discomfort when he had F-16's flying intercept off the deck of a Nimitz-class carrier. Just keep telling yourself "Saturday matinee..." and you'll get through those moments.

4 out of 5 stars Would have been better suited as a series of trilogies with proper closure.......2006-04-16

This is really just a "lite" review of the series. If you enjoyed the Da Vinci Code you actually might enjoy these books. The premise for the books is a connection between human history and aliens. That really is putting it as simply as possible. The stories and writing style remind me a lot of science fiction movie and radio serials of the past. There is really very little character development and this gives the books a shallow feel. Like the movie and radio serials the books are really about the thought provoking ideas and the special effects.

To me the books should have been a series of trilogies with satisfying endings. The first three books would have been a great trilogy if it had a real ending. The rest of the books just seem to take off on this endless serial of increasingly farfetched ideas with no real ending. As it is I would recommend reading the first two or three books and realize that after that the series becomes increasingly disjointed and should be considered if you decide to pursue the series further.

1 out of 5 stars I hated this book.......2004-05-02

I loved the Area 51 Series, but this book was just a disappointment. Looks like the author is now just milking what was a good series and taking advantage of readers who buy his books.

Am definitely not buying the next book Area 51 - Legends.

4 out of 5 stars Vampires From Outer Space.......2004-02-17

Or maybe that should be "Vampires Whose Parents are From Outer Space and Have Molded Human History for the Past 10,000 Years." Or... Well, you get the message. This is a concoction of alien invasion and Dracula, which, fortunately, was written by an author capable of making a story enjoyable reading even when it is completely unbelievable.

This is the eighth in Robert Doherty's Area 51 series, and in many ways, it is one of the best. The original series, up through The Truth, suffers from the persistence of the characters. Doherty's forte is not character development, and one can only stand a character endlessly repeating the same behaviors for a certain length of time. With Nosferatu, we get an entirely new case, human and Airlia scion included.

The Airlia, we discover, bred with humans to create a hybrid that they could use as blood bags. Having only half Airlia blood, they could provide nourishment to their masters while feeding on humans. There are very few of these 'vampires,' all kept in the complex under Giza and the pyramids. During a revolt, Nosferatu, Vampyr, and Nekhbet manage to escape. By dint of determination and the ability to sleep for thousands of years. Nosferatu and Vampyr manage to outlast the Airlia gods. Nekhbet was injured in the escape and cannot be awakened until a new supply of Airlia blood is found. Nosferatu is the one that loves her, but Vampyr seeks only one thing - revenge for what the Airlia and their human servants have done.

Gradually the story moved into the present, making a shambles of much of human history in the process. Doherty has a tendency to explain everything that ever happened as the result of the interference of the Airlia and the vampires. Personally, I find this excessive, but Doherty manages to keep this from becoming a show stopper, weaving everything together into an effort that is completely satisfactory. The only other flaw is that the conclusion is rushed mercilessly. This isn't a gradually build-up, but a sudden shift of gears. Unwarned, the reader is suddenly in the middle of the conclusion without the necessary mental preparation.

Still, a good story, even if it lacks greatness. Most people don't expect alien invations to be great literature (despite some glaring exceptions). What they do expect is suspense and entertainment, and these are the core of Doherty's success. This story can be treated as a stand-alone effort, but reading the preceding volumes will enhance the readers understanding of the baroque infrastructure underlying this tale.

4 out of 5 stars AREA 51: NOSFERATU.......2004-01-14

This book is about a vampire named Nosferatu, and he is the main character. It starts out in ancient Egypt where him and his loved are locked up in a tomb with 2 others. Some people free the 2 others his love and him. While they try to escape they are caught and 2 of them were captured. The 2 were his love and the others sister; Vampyr is the one who lost his sister. Vampyr and Nosferatu escape but Vampyr sister was killed and ran away with vengeance towards humanity and the Airlia Gods. Nosferatu's love was captured and promised to save her someday. When he finally saved after so many centuries he discovered he needed Airlia blood to live eternity with his blood. Throughout the rest of the novel Nosferatu searches for the blood and runs into many troubles in his journey for the Airlia blood as in traveling distant lands and running into his kind Vampyr.

I think this novel kicked some serious butty. The main part I kept reading this book is because it was about vampires and there was alot of gore. There were many battles that took place in this book as well as extra action. The ways the vampires are described in this book are some new things as well as things people would already know. Like their thirst for blood and poor immunity towards the sunlight.

The reason this book was good is the action the adventure and the way the author wrote it. This book also takes place in the future as well as the past of the characters. In the prologue there was this part in the book where a women is riding in a helicopter and it lands in a middle of a forest and there she gets off and waiting there is a vehicle with Vampyr inside, he gets out and Vampyr says" Run or you will die" and the women is puzzled by what he just said and she started running but soon Vampyr chased her down in the forest like he is playing with his food.

Another reason I picked this book is that it doesn't stay in just one place or with one character throughout the book. The book jumps usually between what Nosferatu is doing and what Vampyr is doing, or with some of the other small characters. There are real cool parts in the book as well as war between the Spartans and Athens in a time where Vampyr fought in.

I recommend this book too people interested in vampires, action, gore, the past, magic, and war. The majority of this book takes place in the past. There is gore description whenever the vampires hunt for blood or when Vampyr gets his arms cut of for eating a women and her children. The only magic I remember in the book is in a huge battle against a powerful I like to say a wizard and his army of ruffians. The Wizard uses his power to make lighting bolts, which destroy most of the enemy. I mainly recommend this book to people interested in vampires and Nosferatu and his journey.

Book Description

Area 51, Dreamland, Groom Lake, Paradise Ranch, Watertown Strip, the Box: all refer to the top-secret research installation, located a hundred miles north of Las Vegas, which, for many, has come to stand for all that is shadowy and nefarious about the military-industrial-intelligence complex. Built under the direction of the CIA in the 1950s, the base served as the original test site for the U-2 spy plane and F-117 stealth fighter jet. In more recent years, Area 51 has spurred public interest from its role in the government's $30 billion "Black Budget," from legal claims of worker illness due to toxic burning, and from sensational charges about captured alien spacecraft. It has also given birth to a feisty guerrilla subculture bent on exploding the secrecy surrounding this mysterious spot. David Darlington unfolds the history, legs, and characters involved with Area 51, weaving a weird tale of intrigue and outrage that speaks volumes about popular culture and American democracy at the of the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars A Story of Discovery.......2007-04-08

This book is primarily about the individuals that hunted down information about the secret Air Force base known as Dreamland, The Ranch, or Area 51. It focuses on the 1990's, when the base became part of popular culture. You will find a lot of information about the personalities of the people associated with the efforts to uncover the base. You won't find a lot of unsubstantiated "facts" about UFOs or secret projects that have been associated with the base. If nothing else, the book is worthwhile for putting in print the story of "Mo". Who is Mo? Read the book.

1 out of 5 stars Very little about Area 51, mostly about individuals.......2004-12-14

This book is obviously written to fill pages between a cover that says "Area 51". The writing isn't very good, the information isn't very good, most of it is downright annoyingly off topic such as a chapter on the Luxor hotel's buffet and rides. There is no information about Area 51 you cannot get for free on the internet. The book is extremely vague about the Area 51 base and instead concentrates of various crackpots that consider themselves Area 51 experts. That might be useful if the subjects were revealed in an Area 51 context but they are not. Instead we are treated to tales of how they like to get drunk and eat tuna with their fingers. There is an abundance of pages on various planes and the people who follow such things but again it's about planes and not nessesarily what they might have at Area 51. Much of the book is so pointless and senseless that I can only draw the conclusion that the mandate was to fill pages with words so the publisher could have an "Area 51" book on the shelves. Content wasn't a priority. Don't waste your time or money.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read; Weird Subject.......2004-09-27

Area 51, the highly classified military installation at Groom Lake in the Nevada desert about 90 miles north of Las Vegas, may be more a state of mind than a physical place. Certainly that is the way it is treated in this engagingly written, witty, and sometimes insightful report on the desert base as it is understood in the mid-1990s and the strange cast of characters seeking to learn its mysteries. This is never more true than in the general public's perception of the installation as depicted in such television programs as the "X-Files" and films like "Independence Day."

Area 51 begins with a discussion of the first trip the author, an investigative journalist and author of three earlier books, made in 1993 to the ramshackle town of Rachel, Nevada, on the north side of the Groom Lake facility and haven of Area 51 watchers. There he met the most rational of the lot, Glenn Campbell (not the country singer), who was on a one-man crusade to find out what the government was up to at this super-secret base. It ends in 1997 with the revelation that Campbell was leaving this crusade.

Between these two Campbellite bookends the author weaves a set of weird stories tied to the base. In the early 1950s Lockheed Skunkworks director Kelly Johnson needed a secure place to test the U-2 reconnaissance airplane. The Air Force's test facility at Muroc dry lake, site of the now famous Chuck Yeager X-1 flights of 1947, was too well known and had too many people watching it. Groom Lake's dry bed provided just as good a runway in much more desolate surroundings and thus Area 51 was born. It has been the site of numerous other equally secret Air Force test programs over the years; those acknowledged now include the SR-71 reconnaissance aircraft and the F-117 stealth fighter. Other secret high-technology research projects, both real and imagined by the residents of Rachel, periodically make their way into this book.

But the really enticing thread running through the story of Area 51 is the belief held almost universally by the Rachel residents that the U.S. government is using the base to hide, reverse-engineer, and test alien technology that crashed on Earth. Thus, Area 51 has gained Mecca-like status for UFO hunters the world over. One would have to look for a long time to find as colorful a collection of characters to grace a non-fiction work. If those involved in America's space program look like stuffy establishment types who have taken the adventure out of spaceflight, this crew provides an extreme on the other end.

Bob Lazar serves as a centerpiece for Darlington's account. He says of him, "within the world of ufology, meeting Bob Lazar is tantamount to meeting Bob Dylan. Lazar is similarly a reclusive superstar and a legend in his own time; if not exactly the voice of a generation" (p. 61). Lazar claims to have worked at Area 51, tested alien spacecraft, and actually to have seen extraterrestrials involved in the reverse-engineering process. As such, if one accepts his story without verification, he provided much-needed confirmation and coherence to a range of diffuse anecdotes circulating about Area 51. Darlington does not accept Lazar's story at face-value. Neither did Glenn Campbell and a few others interested in Area 51. They found that many of the verifiable facts of Lazar's life did not pan out and that his wide-ranging statements about the base had serious inconsistencies. All these raised serious questions about his credibility.

But that does not much matter to many of the UFO hunters centered on Rachel. Most accepted his story, and some even added to it. Bill Uhouse, for instance, spun his own story of working as an engineer inside secret government facilities side by side with extraterrestrials who were doling out technological knowledge with an eyedropper to eager government officials. Then there was Ambassador Merlyn Merlin II of Alpha Draconis, who claimed to be an alien in human form sent to Earth to usher in a new order of contact with alien species. Joe and Pat Travis, proprietors of the Little A-Le-Inn in Rachel, have provided the safe haven for many of the UFO hunters in town, even sponsoring 1993's "Ultimate UFO Seminar" in which Lazar and others described their experiences. Finally, Agent X, as he likes to be called, stalks Area 51 to learn about the secret programs conducted there and claims to be a pacifistic hawk and purveyor of privileged national security information.

One over-arching observation springs from Darlington's narrative. There seems to be an unusual linkage between the more strident ufologists and the radical right wing of politics and anti-government militia groups. At numerous points in the book, anti-government rhetoric is voiced about attempts, intergalactic or not, to overthrow the U.S. Constitution and replace it with a "New World Order" in which Americans would become defacto slaves. Ambassador Merlyn Merlin II put an unusual spin on this. "I'm not a government conspiracy wacko," he told Darlington. "These people are radical right-wing conservative Christian fundamentalist militia supporters." Then he said: "I'm for the New World Order. When the United Federation of Planets is connected to the United Nations, that will be the New World Order--a permanent golden age" (p. 203). Slavery or salvation, Area 51 seems to serve as a beacon for each possibility in the minds of those who watch it.

None of this bears much relationship to the activities taking place at Area 51. And Darlington does not provide much serious investigation of them. That would have required research in tons of government records, probably using the "Freedom-of-Information Act" to gain access, and probing among those who live in Washington rather that in Rachel. What he does offer, however, is a fascinating account of what a fringe element of American society believe about what is taking place at Area 51. As such, it is a study of modern popular culture rather than a serious attempt to write history.

5 out of 5 stars Easily, the best book I've ever read.......2003-08-28

I am an Area 51 and US Military and Government Researcher, and I was looking for a book that would inform me not only on speculation as to what is going on in the world's most secretive base, but also honest and truthful facts. After reading David Darlington's best selling biography of the base, I can easily state on Amazon that the book did much more than that. The book is a five star documentary of Area 51, and will inspire the people who work there in to wondering what they are doing in that remote installation in Nevada. The book features how Area 51 came into existence: there was, supposedly, a crash landing of some craft in Roswell, NM, USA in the blistering hot summer of 1947. Who knows where those craft are? The only real piece of evidence to show that the craft are being back engineered to make such historic and monumental aircraft today is Area 51: its sheer size and isolation from the rest of the world is, actually, beyond imagination. The cold war comes and what do you see, but, twenty years after the crash landing and mass speculatory existence of the people of New Mexico, you see craft like the SR71, Have Blue and U-2A and also, later on, the B series. Darlington not only looks at evidence to prove that Area 51 exists, but actually, as a journalist, and a very talented grad. of Yale university, (though not from Skull and Bones!), he looks in a very perspective way at how people live in nevada and cope with what is easily a contradiction of most US regulations on environment and defense. David Darlington spends an increasing amount of time in Rachel, the closest concentration of American citizens to Area 51, otherwise known as Dreamland (hence the title of the book The Dreamland Chronicles), and spends time with just about every famous and widely heard of person in the village. He also spends time with Interceptors, he becomes one himself, looking for planes and travelling with officials to find out, constantly, new things relating to the base. He also uses his intelligence and common sense to seek out red herrings and disinformation, and he does that very well ina humourous and personal way. Area 51, a fantastic matter in modern philosophy, is intriguing, secretive, and always makes you think 'what if?'. But I have never read a book like the one Mr. Darlington wrote. It's good for skeptics, enthusiasts, and interceptors alike, and what I like is that he never gives up hope. Mr. Darlington, you've made me want to read more of the books, and as that phrase is coming from an Area 51 researcher and writer himself, I think I will. I'll award it five 'plus' stars. The book deserves them, don't you worry.

3 out of 5 stars Calling All Crackpots.......2002-06-05

As an open-minded skeptic I'm game to all kinds of weirdness, if the evidence presents itself. In turn I was somewhat familiar with the folklore surrounding Area 51 in Nevada. On a recent cross-country vacation I drove through some of the areas described in this book (though not nearly so extensively), traversing a portion of Nevada 375, and making a personal contribution to the unauthorized bumper sticker tradition. I got this here book later in the trip in Roswell, New Mexico, another center of weirdness that has a much better sense of humor. Here Darlington is not focused on the top-secret military operations at the base known popularly as Area 51 (which would be mostly impossible), but with the folklore practiced by conspiracy buffs and UFO enthusiasts who frequent the area. Centered in the nowheresville of Rachel, this book is populated with all kinds of colorful characters with bizarre theories and backgrounds, with names like Agent X and Ambassador Merlyn Merlin II of Alpha Draconis. Darlington keeps a detached stance, merely reporting each figure's theories and trying not to pass judgment. While most of these folks claim to be activists trying to unveil military and government secrecy, just about all of them come across, through their own words, as the highest class of crackpots, publicity seekers, and connect-the-dots conspiracy theorists that could be debunked by a pre-schooler. Unfortunately, Darlington's detached method leads to a book that can be quite dry and tedious at times, as he tends to use extremely long interviews and speeches verbatim, which sometimes last for several pages in a row. Darlington doesn't bother to propose any universal conclusion about this whole phenomenon, which would be interesting from a cultural standpoint at least. This book is outdated also, with several predictions from the interviewees of momentous events at the turn of the millennium. These sure didn't happen, and I bet it's because the year 2000 is a number based on a human calendar, so why would aliens care? Duh. In the end, this book accomplishes little more than rehashing the weirdness you can get for free from any number of internet news groups.

4 out of 5 stars Area 51: Legend.......2007-05-12

I found this to be an excellent series of books. However, one must be able to get all books in order to enjoy the story. The books do not stand on their own.

4 out of 5 stars Area 51: Legend.......2005-11-09

EXTREMELY INTERESTING. MR. DOHERTY'S ENTIRE AREA 51 SERIES HAS HELD ME IN THRALL. THEY ARE VERY SIMILAR TO THE "STARGATE" TV SERIES, IN THAT ALIENS HAVE GUIDED VARIOUS WORLDS. I HOPE HE CONTINUES THIS SERIES, BUT HIS ATLANTIS SERIES IS ALSO VERY GOOD!

4 out of 5 stars Read the other books first.......2004-10-23

Great book. Great series. There was so much going on that I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. The reader can tell the author put a lot of thought into fitting the history of our world with his fictional world of aliens. It is good as a stand-alone, but it helps to read the other books in the series first to fully grasp why the characters do what they do. There is such a history here that the author has to only touch on the subjects for fear of getting bogged down in too many flash-backs. In fact, that is my only gripe; that the flash-backs take up too much room. They are neccessary for first-time readers, but I, as a person who followed the entire series, found them to be just filler. I loved this book, but I think only because I read the series first.

5 out of 5 stars Great prequel!.......2004-07-13

This is Doherty's second prequel in the Area 51 series. Don't look for anything much new as regards Earth history but the twist he gives to that history based on the origin and actions of our two main protagonists is fascinating. The first prequel, Nosferatu, gives the outlook of the antagonists. Start with the original novel, Area 51, if you are looking for a lot of action. Very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars If you want real stuff go read a reality book!!!.......2004-06-10

I loved this book and want to read the whole series. I have read quite a few peoples reviews on this book and the rest of the series. If you are looking for something more go read a book filled with facts. I for one love the fact that Doherty had enough gumption to write about this subject and tie in a bunch of past occurances. This is so interesting to have a different perspective on World events that occurred. The only world event that he really didn't have much to say about was the resurrection of Jesus and this is probably why. You can't pick fun at anything anymore without people getting upset.

If you want a good reader with no thought going into it, read this book. The story leads itself and you sit and enjoy the ride. The characters are just that: Characters and they are as good as some of the other books that I have read. You get a vivid background about a series that by the sounds of it is pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Tension not resolved - yet!.......2002-10-16

The next book in the series keeps up the tension. The fight against the aliens and/or their supporters becomes more and more intense and desperate. We cannot even be sure about the position of the protagonists, and, oh boy, we have a dramatic final, which solves problems, but does not resolve the plot. We will have to wait for the final in "The Truth". I have never come across a series of novels that could keep up the tension as Doherty does here. An absolute must for SF - fans, who love this kind of science fiction. But I can imagine that those who like thrillers more than SF may be attracted by these books as well.

3 out of 5 stars Area 51: Excalibur.......2002-10-04

A good storyline tires from lack of an ending. Each story has potential but when you reach the 'last' page you wonder what happened to the rest of the book.

If you have the time, read them all and you will enjoy fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Book 6 in the series and still going strong.......2002-09-05

Robert Doherty's sixth book in the Area 51 series, "Area 51: Excalibur" is an excellent addition to the series and, as usual, filled with plenty of action and interesting characters.

Doherty does a great job re-introducing characters providing and background information to the series in the first 40 pages of this novel. Former Navy SEAL, Mike Turcotte and his eclectic group of cohorts again lead the fight against an alien takeover of the planet.

But which of the alien races is our friend and which is our enemy?

That is only one of the questions that Doherty tries to answer in this installment of the series. Faithful readers of the series will soon find the unique "tie-ins" with Earth's history that Doherty provides. His vivid imagination does a fantastic job linking The Sphinx, Noah's Ark, The Black Plague, The Arc of the Covenant, The Holy Grail, the rise of the Nazi SS, and Excalibur together as activites and events that were either casued by, or affected by the alien cultures.

In this installment, Turcotte and his band attempt to quell the attacks of the Kortad and Airlia as they each try to take over the globe. The adventure stretches from Area 51 to Pearl Harbor and from Mt. Ararat to Mt. Everest. If you are a fan of the series, you'll love "Excalibur". If you are new to the series you need to go back and start with "Area 51". Either way, you can't go wrong with this series.

The series (as we know it, anyway) culminates with the 7th and last installment, "Area 51: The Truth" later in the year.

4 out of 5 stars Only Two More Mountains to Climb.......2002-08-13

It has been almost two years since I read the previous volume in this series, 'The Grail.' While these are excellent action adventures, they do not stay long to mind. I am embarrassed to admit that, when I picked this up and started reading, I was without a clue as to what was going on. It was rough going until I remembered the basic plot and characters, so I do not recommend this as a good starting point. The entire series is quite good, especially if you like alien inspired paranoid plots. So I heartily recommend going back to 'Area 51,' and inhaling the entire series.

These books are not heavy going. The primary premise is that the human race owes much of its mythology to the accidental arrival of an alien race called the Airlia back in prehistoric times. Originally, they were benevolent, but an internal rift between two leaders, Artad and Aspasia, caused sufficient chaos that the aliens took a more secretive role, influencing humankind for their own reasons, with little thought to the eventual effects on us. The 'Area 51' series is about what happens when humans become aware enough of this interference to take action against the aliens.

The last several volumes have turned on various factions competing for the possession of several artifacts - the Ark (both of them), the Grail, and now Excalibur, Arthur's sword. In the last volume Lisa Duncan, an American scientist, finds and activates the Grail. In the short time of her exposure, she is remade into something that appears human, but which is immortal. Unfortunately, the Grail is lost to Aphasia's forces, and Lisa returns to the U.S. to find herself and object for close scrutiny and testing.

As Aspasia and Artad marshal their forces in competing efforts to conquer the earth it is left to two men, American Mike Turcotte and Russian agent Yakov, each of which has a mountain to climb. Turcotte must scale Mount Everest to pull Excalibur from its scabbard and turn on the Airlian master computer. Yakov heads for Mount Ararat and the Ark, which is really the Airlian mother ship, which contains the master computer itself. In the meantime, war breaks out in Korea and Taiwan, and the Pacific Fleet is nearly immobilized. Dire straits indeed.

Doherty writes in a classic action oriented style. While his language isn't stilted, the characters speak in short bursts, and introspection is a rare thing indeed. But, the plot is complex enough to keep the reader's attention moving from one cliff hanger to the next. Expect to enjoy the book, but as I found out, don't expect to remember it!
