How Could Marketers Not Get It??.......2007-03-11
I've always considered Tom Peters the guru of marketing. I bought Barletta 's book because of his comments on the cover -- that PrimeTime Women should be the centerpiece of every marketing/strategic plan. As always, I now agree with him wholeheartedly. This book makes an excellent case about why this is the market to go after, not the youth market. Barletta draws on statistics from the New Strategist, AARP, the U.S. Census Bureau and other organizations, and combines them with her consulting firm's own proprietary research to come up with a true "how to" book, with strategies and tips that companies can put into action right away. I've since bought her other book on marketing to women, and plan to spread her name as the consultant to hire before the competition does.
The nature and extent of a "prime marketing opportunity".......2007-03-06
Those who have already read Marti Barletta's Marketing to Women will welcome this sequel in which she develops in much greater depth her core concepts with regard to the purchasing power of what continues to be "the world's largest market segment." Of special interest to many readers is The GenderTrends(tm) Marketing Model that reveals in her first book why and how women reach different brand purchase decisions. She shares in PrimeTime Women some revealing and valuable new insights from all-new research and DDB Worldwide which will be of substantial value to senior-level executives - including but not limited to those primarily responsible for marketing - in all companies, regardless of their size or nature. Barletta carefully organizes and then presents her material within ten chapters which are divided between two Parts: Understanding PrimeTime Women(tm) and The Field Guide for Marketing to PrimeTime Women(tm), followed by an especially informative appendix which identifies "The Best Resources in the Business."
I presume to offer an admittedly unorthodox suggestion: After reading the Foreword and Introduction, proceed immediately to the final chapter in which Barletta offers an Executive Summary which includes a brief but brilliant explanation of "the seven building blocks" for understanding, reaching, and then increasing share of "the world's largest market segment." My opinion is that reading this final chapter establishes a frame-of-reference and thematic context for absorbing and digesting the material that precedes it. One reviewer's opinion....
As is her custom, Barletta makes brilliant use of a number of reader-friendly devices throughout her narrative that facilitate and expedite reviews later of key passages. They include clusters of bold face items, bullet points, and checklists. For example, in Chapter Seven, "The GenderTrends(tm)Marketing Model Applied to Women, a systematic and simple tool which is designed to achieve three objectives:
"1. structure the complexities of gender differences into an organized view of female gender culture;
2. show how to use the principles of female gender culture to enhance each element in your marketing mix; and
3. apply the resulting insights to the five stages of the consumer's purchase path."
In the same chapter, when examining the purchase decision process, Barletta focuses on the differences between men and women, and, the differences between PrimeTime Women(tm) and younger women. Then in the final chapter, "Notes to the CEO," she briefly discusses the aforementioned "building blocks" and this material offers a value-added benefit to non-CEO readers who are senior-level executives: She provides them with a convincing, research-driven argument to support whatever changes must be made in terms of (a) how their respective organizations view women 50-70 years old, (b) how they position what they offer to them, and most important of all (c) how they nourish and thereby sustain a relationship with them.
How important are relationships to women? As Barletta observes, "Women think that people are the most important and interesting element in life, and they are oriented this way from birth...Women see themselves - and everybody, really--as part of an ensemble company. Their core unit is `we' (sometimes `we two,' sometimes a larger group). They take pride in their caring, consideration, and loyalty to and from others...Women's first instincts are to trust and share, and their mentality is rooted in revealing, not concealing."
While explaining "how to win the hearts, minds, and business of boomer big spenders," Barletta also obliterates a number of misconceptions about female consumers in general and those who are 50-70 years old in particular. Did you already know that women control an estimated 80% of all household spending and the percentage is even high for PrimeTime Women(tm)? Also, that women make 55% of all investment decisions, 55% of all decisions concerning consumer electronics, comprise 60% of all home improvement buyers and make 80% of all home improvement decisions, control more than 60% of new car purchase decisions, and 66% of decisions to purchase computers? With regard to income, between 1990 and 2003, women's inflation-adjusted median income grew 26%, while men's grew only 8%.
"PrimeTime Women are the healthiest, wealthiest, most educated, active, and influential generation of women in history. This is their PrimeTime. And it's your prime marketing opportunity." Because of Marti Barletta, that "window" of opportunity is rapidly closing. What are you waiting for?
MARTI UNDERSTANDS RESPECT.......2007-02-23
What I loved about this book was that it just exudes respect for customers. Unlike a lot of books in this area, Marti Barletta isn't trying to teach 'tricks' about how to pretend to please women. She's much more serious than that. She's deeply informed, highly thoughtful and utterly determined that no company can really succeed without taking women very, very seriously. And she won't let women be ripped off by anything second-rate. This means that companies that want to win women's business have to take seriously the research she's done and the care and insight she uses to analyze it. There are a lot of "sell stuff to women" books out there that don't respect women at all, but just see them as easy pickings. They're phoney. But this book - and Marti Barletta herself: they're the real deal.
I learned a ton..........2007-01-31
PrimeTime Women is a breeze to read - like sitting around with Ms. Barletta, chatting. And in the room are dozens of fascinating, ready-to-rumble women, chiming in every so often.
The overarching theme of PrimeTime Women really isn't the money they control - it's the fact that they are taking control of their lives. This is a phenomenon unique to Baby Boomers (and a bit older). After fifty is better than before fifty. There has always been a small percentage of women who bloomed in their later years. For Boomers it's become a generational ethos.
The second part of the book is nuts 'n bolts. I was swept away by many of her "word-of-mouth" marketing paradigms. She eschews the cheesy WOM tactics so often used today in favor of real, truly inspired marketing/PR/promotional techniques.
Best Business Book I've Read In A Long Time.......2007-01-29
Marti Barletta is simply one of the best business minds of our time. Her brilliant insights, in-depth research, and smart marketing tactics make her stand head and shoulders above the crowd. PrimeTime Women, as Marti calls them, are one of the most overlooked business opportunities - but after you read her business case, they won't be for long. I've never finished one of Marti's books without having learned at least 10 new things about marketing to women. And I am a woman! And when it comes to PrimeTime Women, I was amazed to find out how much there really is to look forward to. Society has relied on negative simplistic stereotypes for far too long. Marti Barletta shatters these stereotypes in style, and proves without a doubt that PrimeTime Women are the powerhouse target of the future. Recommended for CEOs/CMOs in categories such as auto, financial services, healthcare, health and beauty, housing and real estate, human resources, auto, packaged goods, travel, hotel, small business, health and fitness, pharmaceutical, retail, entertainment, gifts, toys, etc.
Check out these endorsements:
"Marti Barletta--the First Lady of marketing to women--is back; and she's done it again. Marti calls marketing to 'prime time women' a 'radical opportunity'--and proves it. I not only agree, but also I would call anyone who does not make this extraordinary book the centerpiece of their marketing/strategic plans very, very foolish."
--Tom Peters, author of Re-imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age
"PrimeTime Women will no doubt change the way corporate America views and markets to today's Boomer women. Based on new research and her experience in the field, Marti Barletta opens our eyes to the immense power of this emerging marketing force. She reminds us that women over the age of 50 hold the power of the purse in their PrimeTime hands."
-- Lisa Bacus, Director, Global Marketing Strategy, Ford Motor Company
"Full of expert advice about today's PrimeTime Woman: who she is, what she cares about, where she shops, and what she buys--PrimeTime Women is a must-read for advertising and marketing professionals who are determined to reach the hearts, minds and wallets of today's most coveted consumers: women 50-70 who are in their prime!"
--Dana Anderson, President and CEO, DDB Chicago
"With wit and wisdom, Barletta has pulled off the seemingly impossible: made the prospect of becoming an `older' woman sound like fun. Marketers, take note: a horde of PrimeTime Babes, with passion, power, and bulging pocketbooks, is heading your way."
--Linda Tischler, Senior Writer, Fast Company
"Marti Barletta once again breaks the mold and takes us to the edge of a new frontier in consumer behavior. No one who gives this book serious attention will fail to shoot forward at warp speed in their understanding of the largest market on the planet -Prime Time Women."
--David B. Wolfe, Principal, Wolfe Resources Group

Praise for The Secrets of Happily Married Men
"Manly men rest assured: You can hope to become a better husband without having to get in touch with your feminine side. . . . Lively and entertaining, this broad guidebook provides Haltzman's insights illuminated by anecdotes from his online discussion forum for married men."
—Psychology Today
"Haltzman . . . launches his eight strategies with remarkable vigor. More important, they are extraordinarily well fleshed out and convincingly supported with useful 'to do' lists and a multitude of examples. They will no doubt prove helpful to many men struggling to build a happy marriage."
—Publisher's Weekly
"Scott Haltzman, a psychiatrist and Brown University professor, has been studying marriages good and bad for a long time. . . . View marriage as your most important task, Haltzman urges men, and pursue success as you would anything else that matters."
—Washington Post
"Men are good at fixing problems, not talking about them, so Haltzman advises playing to your strength. The genius of this book is that it . . . asks politically incorrect questions about men and women at home—the neglected front in the gender wars."
—New York Times
"The insights in this book reveal a new and effective way for men and women to understand and appreciate each other. It shows what it really takes to create a loving and lasting relationship."
—John Gray, author, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus
Marriage and relationships are in crisis. The breakup and divorce rate remain incredibly high, despite all the couples therapy, afternoon talk shows, and other books in the marketplace, many of which describe men as abusive commitment phobic creeps who'd better change fast or else. But this new book is totally different, a whole different way of looking at how to build a successful long-lasting relationship from a man's point of view, men who are happy in their partnerships, who have figured out what works for them in accomplishing the goal of a loving, intimate, lifetime commitment. Dr. Scott Haltzman, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University, and founder of
www.secretsofmarriedmen.com, has devised a proven method for improving relationships, based on a man's special and unique skills, strengths, powers—as a responsible and motivated worker, manager, leader, problem-solver, partner, husband, and father. Men are different, Dr. Haltzman says. They don't approach relationships with the same skills and techniques that women do—and viva la difference. Dr.Haltzman therefore lays out eight ways, tasks, proven techniques which men have revealed in confidential correspondence to his highly successful website, including
The First Way: Make Your Marriage Your Job, The Second Way: Know Your Wife, The Third Way: Be Home Now, The Fourth Way: Expect Conflict and Deal With It, The Fifth Way: Learn to Listen, The Sixth Way: Aim to Please, The Seventh Way: Understand the Truth About Sex, The Eighth Way: Introduce Yourself, and finally,
Celebrate Your Love. Within each of these steps, he provides both specific analysis, guidelines and techniques based on male biology, neuro-science, brain differences, unique developmental stages from youth to seniority. To illustrate these ideas in action, he's included wonderful true stories, anecdotes, and confessions from the website. The result is a practical, very entertaining, totally original way to build successful relationships for men and their partners, girlfriends, and wives. For a lasting commitment, a continuing guide to solving inevitable problems and bumps in the road, for more fun, better sex, genuine intimacy, and a life-long partnership—this dynamic new author shows the way in a manner that finally includes an authentic male perspective.

Hope lives.......2007-09-19
It's wonderful to see a book that's so filled with hope and practical advice. Easy to read, and lots, I mean LOTS of helpful information.
An inspiring, practical book for men who want a better marriage!.......2007-07-26
I'm glad to see that more and more men are coming forward to challenge the stereotype of guys we see on TV who are boneheads when it comes to marriage. Dr. Haltzman explains in this great book that men DO have the ability to take a mediocre marriage and make it absolutely wonderful. If every married man read this book, the divorce rate would plummet and people would have very satisfying marriages...and there would be fewer kids traumatized by broken up families. I highly recommend that you buy this book for yourself, for engaged or newlywed men, and for anyone you know that has a stagnant marriage.
Handy Guide for the Married Man.......2007-06-11
An easy read! The type of book that you can read in any random order or a chapter at a time and pick up some very useful tips and guidelines to enhance your relationship with your wife. I am sure that I will keep this book around as a ready-reference to re-read from and get a deeper understanding.
Positive review by a clinical psychologist.......2007-05-23
Last week, Scott Haltzman gave a three hour talk to the San Diego Psychological Association, a group of clinical psychologists. I wasn't sure what to expect. He had appeared on national TV and radio, and he has a website. What I found online looked OK. At the same time, none of what I found appeared to distinguish him too clearly from anybody else who writes about successful marriages. The online advice seemed reasonable, and his credentials were striking, but I wondered if he could tell us anything new. (Many of us have training and experience in doing couples' therapy). There's so much out there that seems pretty good - Christensen and Jacobsen, Gottman, Hendrix, Schwartz, Bader, Solomon & Teagno, etc., etc. I've read quite a few books on the topic of successful marriages, and I feel like I have a decent sense of what is out there.
Fewer than 10 SDPA members showed for the continuing education talk, despite multiple announcements of this presentation. This was a bit surprising given the strength of Dr. Haltzman's credentials and his national reputation. Dr. Haltzman seemed OK with the low turnout, and used it as an opportunity to interact with his audience by asking and answering questions.
As he spoke, it quickly became obvious to me that this guy is an entertaining and dynamic speaker. Picture Bill Maher as a psychiatrist, with a genius for marriage therapy. At some point during the first hour, it hit me... This guy IS the real deal. He really IS passionate about saving marriages. He really DOES have a unique perspective that is informed by research. He integrates other experts' opinions with PLENTY of his own wisdom about marriage. Dr. Haltzman seems to exhibit a strong intuitive and analytical sense of what works in marriages. If I was married and having problems, I'd want someone like this guy to be my therapist. Dr. Haltzman's wisdom is the pearl of many years spent passionately immersed in this topic.
Others in the audience of licensed clinical psychologists had similar, very positive reactions. The anonymous reviews completed after his presentation were quite positive. Moreover, most members of the audience bought copies of his book after hearing his presentation. That was pretty unexpected! Two thumbs way up for this speaker and his book...
This review is a work in progress. I hope to write more about the actual book later. There's plenty of media and info online about this author. See, in particular, Tierney's NY Times article on this book.

A celebration of the Mountain Man A poetic tribute to the dauntless first Westernersthe mountain menand their incredible adventures. Here, among many, are the stories of: John Colter, who, in 1808, naked and without weapons or food, escaped captivity by the Blackfeet and ran and walked 250 miles to Fort Lisa at the mouth of the Yellowstone River Hugh Glass, who was mauled by a grizzly, left for dead by his companions, and crawled three hundred miles to Fort Kiowa on the Missouri Kit Carson, who ran away from home at age seventeen, became a legendary mountain man in his twenties and served as scout and guide for John C. Fremonts westward explorations of the 1840s

Definitely a worthwhile read, entertaining, authentic.......2007-06-06
I highly recommend this book very authentic, but entertaining, enthralling and compelling. My advice is to get the paperback, and mark it up as you go thru, as you will want to return to it often for reference or refreshing.
History with a heart beat........2006-10-04
This book is much more than just a history of the fur trade and mountain men. In fact, if you read the Preface, Win states that he wishes to portray the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the mountain men from a subjective point of view. He accomplishes the task. It's a wonderful read about the mountain men (not ALL of the mountain men but a select, representative few) and their lives. You may ask, how accurate is his subjective view. The answer lies in the fact that Win is well researched in the lives of the mountain man, well learned in the mountain ways, and skilled enough to give these historical figures a heartbeat. As mentioned before, the number of mountain men chronicled in this book is limited. So, if you are looking for a good primer on individual mountain men, then maybe "The Mountain Men" by Laycock would be a better place to start. Otherwise, this is an excellent book and not as dry as some of the books on individual mountain men.
The Mountain Men .......2006-08-08
Never have so few lived such adventurous lives! During the era of the Mountain Men, lasting from 1806 to 1843, a few hundred Americans trapped or traded for beaver in the Rocky Mountains. Blevins tells the romantic story of some of these men, especially those who made their living around the northern Rockies in Wyoming, Utah, and Montana.
The famous stories about the Mountain Men are told here: John Colter's run, Hugh Glass's encounter with a grizzly, Jedediah Smith's long overland journeys to California, the peregrinations of Jim Bridger. The lives, customs, and tortured language of the Mountain Men, including the debauchery of rendevous and the joys of Indian women and gorging on buffalo meat are well described. The author celebrates the Mountain Men and if you're not familar with the era and its heroes this is a good place to start -- although with the understanding that you're not getting the whole story. The fur trappers of the Southwest, including Ewing Young and Kit Carson, are scarcely mentioned. Nor do the British competitors of the Americans receive their due. But the untamed West in all its pristine glory is well-described in "Give your Heart to the Hawks."
From the vast literaturee about the Mountain Men. "Across the Wide Missouri" by Bernard DeVoto is probably the (difficult and irritating) classic of the genre.
Smallchief
The Alumni of Rocky Mountain College.......2005-06-18
Winfred Blevins' `Give Your Heart to the Hawks' is exactly what its sub title claims - a tribute to the Mountain Men. It is neither a historical novel nor a pure history. Rather, it is accurate history, albeit with Blevins' interpretation of the thoughts and emotions that the mountain men were experiencing during some of their most dangerous and daring exploits added. This technique removes the book from the roles of strict history, but works well in creating the tribute that the author intended, for his goal was not simply to chronicle the bones of their history, but to bring to life their wild and free existence and allow the reader to enter into the spirit of the mountain man's life.
Blevins does not attempt a comprehensive account of the mountain men. Some are covered extensively, like John Colter, the prototype mountain man, Jim Bridger, and Jed Smith, the most atypical and perhaps greatest of the mountain men. Others, like Old Bill Williams, Joe Walker, and Kit Carson are barely covered or mentioned only in passing. Blevins does not cover the mountain men of the southwest at all. Instead, he illuminates his chosen subjects in depth, choosing to fully explore the life that the mountain men lived rather than broadly covering the entire scope of their collective history.
To recreate the wild drama of the mountain man's life, Blevins tells some of the most thrilling tales of the era, like John Colter's desperate naked run from Indian braves pursuing him for sport, Hugh Glass' amazing solo trek through 300 miles of wilderness without weapons or any tools for survival after being left for dead when mauled by a grizzly, or Jed Smith's daring crossings of the desert and mountains to find a land route to California. He writes of these men, "Any man who survived for several years as a trapper, taking responsibility for his own survival alone in the wilds, had been schooled thoroughly by the Rocky Mountains. ...He had graduated from Rocky Mountain College, a pragmatic university that gave no degrees, but flunked men into their graves." Between the various stories of specific mountain men, he includes interludes that detail important aspects of their life and trade - trapping, yarning, rendezvous, buffalo - cuisine premiere, mountain craft, mountain mating, and trappers and Indians are a few of the interesting subjects of mountain life dealt with in these interludes. He also includes a few colorful accounts written by the rare, literate mountain man detailing their unique life. He succeeds admirably in breathing life into this too often neglected period of amazing individuals who blazed the way for the westward expansion of the American nation.
While Blevins' writing is not always stellar, he manages to create an effective and stirring tribute to the wild individuals who chose to live free in the Rocky Mountains. No one who is interested in the period should miss it. Both students of the period of the mountain men and fur trade and those looking for a good introduction to the subject will find `Give Your Heart to the Hawks' a fascinating and rewarding reading experience.

A gem.......2004-12-27
Blevins exhibits that rare and talented writing ability of blending human feelings and emotions with documented historical literature.
The author breathes life into the many fur trappers who romped and stomped their way west of the Missouri in search of beaver pelts and the ensuing exploration efforts thereof, from the early 1800's to the trade's demise in 1840.
The reader senses the anguish and pain of John Colter as he outruns the Blackfeet; feels the torment and frustrations of Jedediah Smith losing scores of trappers to hostile Indians, along with his relentless and scrupulous efforts to locate water in the deserts during the course of his expeditions; the incredible doggedness of Hugh Glass out surviving the most famous grizzly attack known to western literature and numerous other accounts of survival (and non survival) in this time frame.
Jim Bridger, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Robert Campbell, the Sublette brothers, the missionaries, ups and downs of the fur trade, intense competition between the fur companies, Indian antagonisms and friendships, it's all here. Blevins puts you in their shoes (moccasins).
A wonderful read.

Reading a Max Lucado book is as comfortable as having coffee and conversation with a close friend. He Chose the Nails: What God Did to Win Your Heart is signature Lucado: warm, conversational storytelling blended with scripture, humor, and vulnerability.
Lucado invites us to understand the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion and celebrate the significance of the promises they offer. From the sign in different languages tacked to the cross ("I will speak to you in your language") to the burial clothing ("I can turn your tragedy into triumph"), he speaks of each symbol as a "gift of grace" that reveals God's love for mankind.
Lucado takes us to Calvary and shows us our sins nailed between the hand of Jesus and the cross. "You've made some bad choices in life, haven't you," writes Lucado. "You've chosen the wrong friends, maybe the wrong career, even the wrong spouse. You look back over your life and say, 'If only I could make up for those bad choices.' You can. One good choice for eternity offsets a thousand bad ones on earth. The choice is yours."
Whether he's bantering around phrases like "the hall monitors of holiness" or crafting a deeper expository on the crown of thorns, Lucado neatly balances the task of making his words accessible to a broad audience while delivering a meaty message on God's greatest sacrifice. Pick up this insightful read, and you'll be glad you made the choice. --Cindy Crosby

The wood. The thorns. The nails. Christ's sacrifice has defined the very essence of mankind's faith for the past 2000 years. And now, Max Lucado invites you to examine the cross, contemplate its purpose, and celebrate its significance with He Chose the Nails. With his warm, caring style, Max examines the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion, revealing the claims of the cross and asserting that if they are true, then Christianity itself is true. The supporting evidence either makes the cross the single biggest hoax of all time, or the hope of all humanity. More than a book, the campaign includes the first stand-alone workbook, leaders guide, and video package from Max, as well as a praise & worship CD from Here to Him music featuring several of today's favorite Christian artists.

He Chose Nails.......2007-05-12
I have read many of Max Lucado books, and this one is one of his best. It brings us even closer to our Lord and Savior, and the sacrifice He went through for you and me.

Savoring the Cross of Christ.......2007-04-26
Max draws you into the cross of Christ, as he attempts to capture your mind with reference to things you would not even consider. The Via Dolorosa is our journey too. Bravo!
Good Lenten Reading!.......2007-04-02
We are doing a Lenten study using this book. The short chapters are easy to read and very thought provoking. I was especially glad it came in large print for a friend of mine who has trouble with her eyes. We have enjoyed it very much. The questions are better for those who have not really studied their faith in depth. I like the scripture study and references the best. Thanks Max!
Amazing.......2007-04-02
We used this book as the basis for the Lenten series at our church. It was very powerful and amazing how God used it to change lives. Max Lucado has a God-given gift with words - he makes you laugh, think deeply, and desire more of God.
HE CHOSE THE NAILS.......2007-01-04
THIS BOOK ALONG WITH THE WORKBOOK HELPS YOU TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ON HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SACRIFICE CHRIST DID JUST FOR YOU. IT IS AN EXCELLENT RESOURCE FOR STUDY AND REFLECTION.

Book Description
With the development of multiple card-playing sites on the Internet, Hearts is more popular than ever. The author has drawn on his own considerable experience to explain such fine points as proper cards to pass from various Hearts Or Spades combinations, and explains all you need to know about popular variations like Cutthroat, Partnership, Three-Handed, and Jack Of Diamonds.
Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-03-16
There are things the book should have included but were not there such as what cards should be passed. He mentioned a very few that were good, but he should have given much more examples as to what cards to pass and not to.
The One and Only Classic Hearts Book.......2005-04-07
The Complete Win At Hearts is the only comprehensive work on the card game of Hearts which has been published to date. -And this old - timey game has been around for long, long time. The author obviously understands the game, and has laid out a detailed approach to the strategy of Hearts. The chapter about managing the Spades suit is clear and concise. Proper discarding, and play of the hand is thoroughly presented. Ample space is provided for Partnership play, three handed Hearts, the Jack of Diamonds variation, and defensive play.
The only shortcoming in this book is the somewhat incomplete discussion about managing the hearts suit. Otherwise, it's a gem, with plenty of humor, and some of the most interesting hands you will ever see. I have waited for years to see if another author would come out with a new Hearts Book. So far, the game of Hearts is still represented by "The Complete Win At Hearts".
Check it out - you will be glad you did!
Is there another book ?.......2003-05-08
Supposedly teaches by showing many examples and situations where you could have done so and so .. I didn't find any real rules to follow and very few tactics that can be inferred from the examples. I'm an above average Hearts player and certainly have to say that I did not pick up anything to improve my game in this book. The best hearts book? Probably so, but only because there isn't another out there.
Dry and painfully boring.
Big Disappointment.......2002-09-17
Not for one looking for principles. Mostly a collection of wild-titled hands, impossible to remember. Chapter Nine, "The Grand Squash," is devoted to a hand the author has seen only 3 times in 20 years. Go figure.
Best Hearts book available.......2001-07-25
Joe Andrews does a masterful job of relating to the reader the various hands a player may encounter. His strategies and experience are second to none. I read the book often to help sharpen my skills and I notice I win more often because with the help of this book I understand the possibilities of each dealt hand more clearly. A definite read for any level of hearts player.
Book Description
When good deeds become policy
American soldiers have provided medical aid to civilians in many wars, and no less in the Vietnam War, where there were more than forty million contacts between U.S. medical personnel and Vietnamese civilians.
Robert J. Wilensky, using data derived from extensive archival research as well as his personal experience in Vietnam, shows how medical aid to Vietnamese civilians, at first based simply on good will, became policy. The original Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP), by which unit medical teams treated civilians in their area, soon expanded to other acronymically designated programs: the Military Provincial Hospital (later Health) Assistance Program (MILPHAP), the Civilian War Casualty Program (CWCP), and the Provincial Health Assistance Program (PHAP).
Although MEDCAP treated many, American doctors were uniformly unhappy about the superficial care they were able to give. Labs, x-ray machines, and surgery were not available at the unit level; follow-up was sketchy or nonexistent. Other programs became so politicized that they were almost ineffective. Coordination with the government of South Vietnam was poor, creating areas that were underserved.
Most important, there is no evidence that the good will built by U.S. doctors transferred to South Vietnamese forces. American programs may have emphasized the inability of the Republic of Vietnam to provide basic health care to its own people and may have demonstrated to Vietnamese civilians that foreign soldiers cared more for them than their own troops did. If that is the case, the programs actually did more harm than good in the attempt to win hearts and minds.

MEDCAPS.......2007-04-17
For anyone who has been on a MEDCAP a must read. A very good historical review of the experience and processes. For those who have never been on an international medical mission, I strongly recommend this book as it illustrates the power of medicine in the peace process.
