Life lessons? Romance? Literary instruction? Go, Dog. Go! offers all this and more, wrapped up in one simply worded, warmly hued package. Using single-syllable words in rhythmic repetition, and introducing colors and prepositions, this Seuss-styled classic has been an early favorite of children since 1961. For those looking for deeper meaning in a beginning reader book, here you'll find nothing less than a microcosm of life. Green dogs, yellow dogs, big dogs, little dogs. Dogs who prefer cars, dogs who favor skis. All represent the diversity a child will find in the world. And the slow-to-bud romance between the cheerfully oblivious yellow dog and the mincing pink poodle explains more succinctly than most self-help books what goes on in many grown-up relationships. Nonetheless, Eastman takes the concept of "primary" to heart, with his simple silly phrases and solidly colored illustrations. Not only will this book inspire peals of laughter in kids, it will also help them make the magical connection between those mysterious black squiggles on the page, and the words they hear and speak. (Ages 4 to 8)

Illus. in full color. Many kinds of dogs in a variety of fun-filled activities.

5 out of 5 stars Shelley's Dad.......2007-09-16

This is an excellent childrens' books. The pictures keep the child interested while the repetition helps them as they learn to talk and read. I like all of the P.D. Eastman books that I have read.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun!.......2007-07-18

This is such a fun read! The illustrations are great. This is one of my son's favorite books. It teaches children colors and opposites. Out of the blue he will say to me, "Do you like my hat?" Then we play the hat game for awhile! I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Go go go go GOOOO! (my daughter's words).......2007-07-08

I started showing this book to my daughter when she was 16 months old.
It is her absolute favorite (and she has about 30 books). She throws the book at me and shoves it in my face at least 4x per day.

She loves pointing to all the dogs while I tell her the color of each.
She is obsessed with bikes, so the dogs riding bikes really get her excited. She is now almost 18 months old, and she now understands that the sun is hot, and can say the word "hat, car, stop, and tree" from the repeated readings of the book.

There are so many things that this book teaches...colors, stop and go, up/over/under/in/out/around, day/night.....It was my absolute favorite beginner book as a small child too, and I am 40 now.

5 out of 5 stars Great Classic.......2007-05-18

Love, love, love this book. A great classic and one of my childhood favorites that I can share with my little 19-month-old daughter.

5 out of 5 stars GO, DOG. GO !!.......2007-05-07

My little grandson is 6 years old and was experiencing some trouble with his reading in first grade. My Mother-in Law in the Chicago Suburbs told me that she read this book to all four of her children when they were having difficulty reading years ago, along with all of the Dr. Suess books as well...
All of her children turned out to be Professionals, one is a Bi-lingual teacher, then there's a Physical Therapist amd a Professor of Language Arts at a nearby University and one became an Executive for a very large Auto Manufacturing Company for 30 yrs. So, I ordered the "Go, Dog. Go !" book for him.
He was so excited to get his own package in the mail, that we sat down on the couch immediately and he read the whole book to me, all 62 pages of it !!! He just had a few little problems with the "wh" and the "th" words, otherwise he did fantastic !! Since then, his reading in school has improved greatly, and his teacher and parents are thrilled. So am I !! He understood the underlying humor in the book, and looked forward to every next page.

Thanks for a great price too !! Jan Jimenez, Danbury, CT.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good motivator for an unmotivated reader.......2006-08-11

Nora Gaydos' series 'Now I'm Reading' has really helped our unmotivated reader get going with reading.
PROS
- stickers (multiples for each of the books)
- fun stories (too often, early reader stories are dull, but I was actually flipping ahead on 3-4 of these books to see how things would resolve.)
- Good illustrations (nothing Newberry Award worth, but they really compliment the story, good colors, fun characters.)
- Your reader can't cheat by 'reading' the pictures
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, Nora does an excellent job of consistently hammering home the specific sound, letter combo, or phonic rule the book is focused on. (Usually on the first read, by the end of the book, my reader was sight reading the focused on letter combo or rule)

CONS(only because I have to list at least one to be 'fair and balanced')
- MORE STORIES!!! Keep writing Nora...your approach hits the nail on the head for early readers. We need more of your work.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the beginning reader.......2005-08-04

My child will be in 1st grade this year and this is our third set of reading books by Nora Gaydos. The size of the books is very kid-friendly and the amount on each page is just what the early reader can handle. He feels like he is making progress and it is not too hard so we don't encounter too much frustration which is common with his other books.

5 out of 5 stars Ease into reading the fun way!.......2004-10-09

I cannot say enough good things about the "Now I'm Reading" series by Nora Gaydos. Starting with the 2 level one books and going through to the level four pack you have 50 books that are just right for your beginning reader. Each book is 10 pages, meaning that your child has 500 pages of simple yet fun, attractive, entertaining, and educational learning at their fingertips. Each book focuses on a different sound, pattern, or skill and each level builds on the last. There is a lot of repetition of the words and sounds in the text which helps build word and sound recognition. My son learned to read with these books when he had just turned 4 and continues to love them now as he nears 5. They have given him a great base which he is easily applying to all kinds of other books. He loves these books because they are small, funny, easy to get through in one sitting, and enjoyable time after time. Sometimes he is distracted from the reading due to the very cute pictures, but one thing is certain, he will want to read them again and again. Love of reading and learning are definitely things that these books promote! What more could a parent want?

Oh, why won't Marvin K. Mooney just please go now? In this 1972 classic for "beginning beginners," Dr. Seuss devotes his rhymes to budging the reluctant young Marvin K.: "The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how." But despite his impatience, our narrator certainly isn't short of ideas on how Marvin could make an exit. "You can go on stilts. You can go by fish. You can go in a Crunk-Car if you wish." Seuss's ever wacky illustrations accompany each new mode of transport, from balloon to broomstick to Bumble-Boat. And if those who are just learning find a word they don't know, chances are Seuss has simply made it up to fill out this ear-pleasing, easy-to-read text. This book is yet another fun and euphonious entry from the good doctor, a silly primer for budding rhymers and readers. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Book Description

Illus. in full color. In merry verse and illustrations, Marvin is asked to leave by every conceivable means of transportation.

4 out of 5 stars Not Seuss' best, but still good.......2006-10-31

I'm a big fan of Dr. Seuss, and while this isn't his best, it's still pretty good.

Marvin K. Mooney is supposed to go, and that sets the scene for 25 pages of delightfully silly pictures and fun-to-say-out-loud rhymes ("Get yourself a Ga-Zoom. You can go with a boom!").

It's never clear WHY Marvin has to go, and I wonder if some kids might speculate on the reason. "Did he do something wrong? Is he in trouble?" (A giant hand points to Marvin as the text says "GO!")

Still, this is a good read-aloud book that kids should like for the pictures and the rhymes.

5 out of 5 stars Popular wtih my under 5 year olds.......2005-12-29

I am not quite sure what is most appealing to my children, the rhymes or the ridiculously whimsical illustrations - they love the Zike-bike and the zumblezay the best. My 2 year old goes around singing the word 'Zumblezay'over and over so just the sound of it is obviously appealing.

I am not sure I like the concept of it much - it is telling Marvin K Mooney to go - and in no uncertain terms ("Just go go go please do do do") for instance

HOwever the book is effective in so many ways - it really interests my kids and they enjoy browsing it on their own. It has a nice rhyme to it which changes its cadence in parts adding emphasis and interest. It has the fun and whimsical illustrations which strange contraptions so loved by Dr Seuss and generations of children.

It might not be the best 'message' but I think that is lost in the sheer good fun of the writing and illustration. My kids enjoy it and so do I.

5 out of 5 stars loved it and can't get enough.......2005-10-16

I remember being very young and asking my mother to read this to me over and over. She got so tired of reading it to me, but I have never tired of the book. I purchased it for my nephew and look forward to reading it to kids of my own some day soon.

5 out of 5 stars One of my daycare kids favorite.......2005-09-10

I love to read my daycare kids books with rhythm and rhyme. This book is terrific and adorable and never seems to get old no matter how many times I read it. We giggle through the whole thing. FUN FUN read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2005-06-24

My son is an 11 month infant and we love to read this book. He knows who Marvin is and when I ask him to find Marvin he points him out with his finger. He seems to be calling him a Dog sometimes and maybe he's right. One night I said Goodbye Marvin and my little guy waved bye-bye to him. This is one of those few stories that niether he nor I get tired of reading and rereading. Now when I start in, "The time has come..." (the openning lines), my son looks for the book. He also recognizes the cow, lion, and elephant and makes their sounds. There really is surprisingly a lot to this book to enjoy. I have even thought about there being an existential subtext here and that the book is about time (the mysterious narrator's hand wears a watch and refers to time in the opening lines) and life's finitude (to go means death) ... Okay, woah--layers of meaing here. My point is that this really is a strange, wonderful, imaginative, and addicting little book. And hey, for once, Dr. Seuss's main character isn't Scottish. I wish it came as a board book because my little guy is pretty rough on the pages sometimes.

I learned how to read from the "Dick & Jane" books....early 1960's They are fun to read. This is why I purchased this book and other "Dick & Jane" books for my son. I just received the book(s) in the mail two days ago. My son has picked up on the words and stories very quickly. His confidence has built up in the last two days...he enjoys reading these books. He will be reading these books all summer long. When he starts Kindergarten in September, i'm sure his school teacher will be impressed. BRING THESE BOOKS BACK INTO THE SCHOOLS!

5 out of 5 stars My daughter (age 4) loves Dick and Jane.......2005-02-02

The stories in "Go Away, Spot" are not included in "Storybook Treasury of Dick and Jane and Friends," until some other books in this series. These books have been great for my daughter learning how to read. I thought she would find the stories to be boring because of the controlled vocabulary (stories repeat the same few words over and over), but the illustrations keep her motivated to read the story. These books have been a great confidence builder. Reading these books has helped her develp an identity of being a reader.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2004-01-18

I grew up with the great adventures of DICK and JANE. I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. She is in Kindergarten and knows a great deal of sight words. She is capable of reading this on her own, and she absolutely loves it.
I too am a teacher, and I feel that the basic reading skills that Dick and Jane teach will help all children to become better readers.

5 out of 5 stars I would not suggest this book until you are 15kyu.......2007-09-17

Being in a go club that sees many beginners I feel fairly qualified when I say this book will not help you improve rank until you are 15kyu (AGA/KGS) and really waiting until you are in the single-digit kyu range will give you the best rank improvement per time spent reading... I first read this book at 13kyu and was really stretching. I recently re-read this at 5kyu and got much more out of it. If I had to pick a perfect rank to read it at I'd say 7kyu.

All that said, the writing style is superior to every other go book I've seen and there may be merit in reading this without the goal of rank improvement. Many other reviewers have pointed this out as well, but you should know that if you are 15kyu you will not be able to follow many of the problems, and in the end you will probably still be 15kyu.

For those goaling for rank improvement, I would strongly suggest reading at most one chapter per day. You need to play games between chapters or else you will not correctly apply what you are learning. With most other intermediate go books (such as Tesuji or Life & Death) it is not as damaging to read it all in one sitting... but Lessons in the Fundamentals must have games played between chapters. It is painful to make yourself stop reading between chapters, but you should.

5 out of 5 stars A book that everyone should get.......2003-01-16

I personally find this book very useful (at least for myself, but I believe as well for many of you guys). It is especially true if you read it the second and the third time. When I review my own game, I can find out a lot of mistakes which Kageyama has mentioned in the book. (Like forget to struggle to go ahead) There is a Go competition during summer, and I have just finished this book the third time. Some of the tesuji in the book is very useful.

I guess it will be good to learn the basic rule of the Go game and then play for a while. (may be a hundred game), then start reading this book. Then you can get the most out of it. (I believe Kageyama himself has suggested us to play for many games to get the feeling first. He mentioned player usually meet barrier at around 11-13kyu, 5-6kyu and 1-2kyu. So I guess if one train up to around 15kyu and then start reading this book, it will be very useful. And then review the book once a while. Get the fundamental idea in your mindset. And you will find Go even more interesting

5 out of 5 stars An extremely well-rounded book.......2001-07-27

This book is an endless source of information. As you get better at go, you get more and more out of it. When I first started playing, I learned little from the book but I did learn valueble basic tactics such as the net and the ladder and so forth. Later, I learned useful tesujis and opening strategies. After putting the book down for about 3 months, and as my skill increased, I went over it again and found more useful info including a generaly good attitude towards go.

I suggest this book to anyone who wants to keep playing go. It may not be useful at the time you get it, but keep skimming through and I gaurantee you will find useful information along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for post-beginner stage.......2001-06-02

Kageyama packs the book full of useful instruction, given in a chatty style with the occasional self-deprecating humour. While not a book for the absolute beginner, he surprises many readers by starting with ladders. But he shows that they are excellent training for reading (calculating) ability which also builds self-confidence during a game.

The book also covers strategic principles, typical endgame play (and a common mistake by handicap takers), josekis (corner openings).

Of course, in such a game full of complex possibilities, books can't solve everything. For example, I presume it requires experience way beyond his book to know whether a move is "proper" or "slack".

5 out of 5 stars Kageyama is the man........2001-02-24

With his no-nonsense style, and quick wit, Toshiro Kageyama takes you thorugh 'the basics' of Good Go. Go, like mathematics, is a language (one of its many names is literally translated as 'handtalk'). Here, Kageyama is teaching us how to spell.

We are provided with easy-to-follow instruction and guided problems in chapters on Life and Death, Ladders (including spiral ladders); Territory and Spheres of Influence; How to study Joseki; Good Shape and Bad; Endgame Pointers; and my favorite, Tesuji (snap-backs and the like).

Kageyama also gives us a general feel for how the stones 'move' on the board, and the direction of play. These Lessons, and his writing style, combine with anecdotes from his professional career and television appearances to make this a wholly enjoyable book.

More on his style: The effect of Kageyama's writing is as if he's right there with you; very conversational. He will encourage and support, but he will also slap your hand if you are not paying attention. Make no mistake, his sole intention is that you express yourself, get better, and have fun along the way.

Beginners around 20 kyu and below:
You may want to concentrate on learning the alphabet, so to speak. But you should know that this book has some very simple 'words'. As soon as you feel comfortable playing on a 19x19 board, then find this book.

Book Description

Go, an ancient, subtly beautiful game of territory, is the oldest game in the world still played in its original form. This book contains its rules, techniques, a glossary of terms, and a list of international and American Go organizations.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good, a lot of content in it........2007-07-05

This a very good introductory book. If you have played around 10 games and and least won some, this is probably a good book for you. It could be too hard for a total newcomer who doesn't even know the rules. For them I would recommend either learning from the web and playing a bit before, or "Learn to Play Go, Volume 1" from Janice Kim, which is a lot simpler, but shallower, so you'll want more very soon.

4 out of 5 stars informative.......2007-03-22

This is my first book on Go. Hard to understand but quick to read through. I read it through in two days and i'm just starting to digest it all.

4 out of 5 stars Go for Beginners.......2007-03-09

Met my expectations. Very good for teaching a beginner like me and my son how to do this game and have fun at it!

5 out of 5 stars Examples Galore.......2006-07-23

This book is in the style of most Go books in its use of examples an nearly every page. For the beginner this can be difficult to cope with but it is important nonetheless. While it suffers from being only one book, it is a wonderful way to start the path of a beginner because it feels like you're playing with someone instead of just trying to read and remember.

5 out of 5 stars Great beginning book.......2006-07-21

Great introductory book. Besides just the rules, it also includes basic strategy and tactics.

Dog be gone!

The big old dog wants to play. Can the little boy make him go away?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Playful Pup Persuasively Pounces.......2003-02-27

A boy who is afraid of dogs meets a friendly long-haired barking fellow looking to play. He tells him to go away, but the dog insists on being friends. The dog instantly loves the boy, but the boy isn't so sure.

Your child will learn how dogs are fun to play with, and how some things aren't quite as scary as they might first appear.

The colorful, warm drawings have endured through the years, and will help bring a smile to your face.

I fully recommend "Go Away, Dog."

5 out of 5 stars My "most favorite book".......2002-05-28

I have the original version (1963) and mine has the following inscription written by my mother:

"This was a library book I checked out for Lisa when she was 4 and 1/2 years old. She loved it so much she kept putting off taking it back and one day 'could never find it again'. Later, she told me she hid it and by then I had paid the library for it. Her most favorite book then and for a long time."

I cherish my copy of Go Away Dog and am buying the new version for good friend's baby shower.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and clear (but no CD-Rom).......2007-09-05

This is a very nice introduction to the game of Go!
As a rank beginner who had never heard of Go before reading this book, I was satisfied that it gave me enough of a foundation to play the game on my own. Also, it stimulated interest enough for me to continue my education afterward with other books.
My one complaint is that there is no CD-Rom support material accompanying the book. While making for a less-expensive booklet, it does fall a little short of modern education standards.

3 out of 5 stars Product Information.......2007-04-23

This book is the same book as:

Magic of Go: A Complete Introduction to the Game of Go

The content is exactly the same, and only the typeface and cover are updated in this version.

I thought this book was a merely solid introduction to the game, and that it was a bit scattered and disorganized for a complete beginner and a bit basic for a player who has reached the 'teen kyu level.

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful intro to the game.......2007-03-29

The didactic approach used is very useful to understand the link between the basic techniques exposed. It is helps me enjoy playing with a software pgm.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for a beginner.......2007-03-12

I'm just getting started playing Go, and I found this book to be an excellent introduction. The author is an internationally prominent player, and his passion shows on nearly every page. However, he never forgets that he's writing an introductory book. The book is authoritative without ever being condescending or assuming that the readers know more than they do. It seemed nearly perfectly "pitched" to me.

The book very clearly lays out the rules of the game, most of the basic tactics, and some of the variations. It also makes clear a simple fact about Go: It doesn't take very much time to learn to play, but it probably takes a lifetime to truly master. When I finished reading the book, I truly felt I had a pretty good foundation for playing other similarly experienced players. However, I also felt that I still had a LOT to learn.

I really liked the short articles about the history of Go and the culture that has grown around it that are inserted between the chapters. They provide some context for what is being taught, and they're also a nice break in the "heavy" material.

Like all introductory books about all games, there is a drawback: There's no way to ask for more clarification or more examples. However, the pacing is good, the examples are clear, and the organization is logical.

After reading this book, you won't be a tournament-quality player. However, you will understand and enjoy the game, and you'll probably be inspired to learn more about it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Go book.......2007-01-09

Best boook on Go I have read so far, clear and concise and the book flowed very well, making understanding concepts easy

5 out of 5 stars Do not listen to the "l33t" Go players.......2007-06-08

This book is excellent. Is it pitched to a basic level? Yes. It even says: "30-kyu to 25-kyu". So if you're a 13 kyu player, just skip it. Don't complain that it's too basic. Although, once I make a better rank, I think I could come back to this book with pleasure. Even now, some of the problems seem simple - but the way that they build upon one another to lead the reader to a greater understanding is sublime.

As a beginner, I found this book to be delightful. Yoshinori, through his selection of problems and the order of presentation, actually teaches you how to play the game well. If I had known, really known, what this book would do for me, it would have been the only beginning book (and series) that I purchased. It also includes the rules of the game, so it isn't merely problems. If you are just starting out in Go, do yourself a huge favor and get this book. It really opened my eyes to the beauty of the game. I can't really gush enough about it.

4 out of 5 stars Good but simple.......2007-01-19

This book has a number of problems that can familiarize you with the fundamental shapes and techniques that appear in go. However, it is possible to learn these fundamentals simply by playing games of go on the smaller, and then the larger boards. I am sure that later books in the series have more in-depth problems.

2 out of 5 stars amateur go player.......2006-07-03

Most people seem to recommend Volumes 2, 3, and 4 (especially 3 and 4) of this series. Volume 1 is too easy.

Amazon apparently does not carry anything except Volume 1, but all of the volumes can be ordered online from Kiseido. If you are interested in this book, also consider Get Strong at Tesuji and One Thousand and One Life-and-Death Problems. Check out David Carlton's internet go bibliography for more info.

5 out of 5 stars Actually the only beginner book you need.......2005-11-05

I was befuddled with the explanations provided in even beginner GO books. These problem books take all that away! Just example upon example, and either you get it or you don't. There is no need to scratch your head. This book is an excellent confidence builder.

When I first started reading about GO, every time i tried to put into practice something I read in a book, there was some exception, or a principle really did not apply, and I got thrashed.

Giving up misleading (to me) explanations, I turned to this book. It, and the second volume, got me out of my rut.

For beginning players: Learn the rules, read no other book but this one. Finish this and the second volume of this series and you will be better prepared to read traditional GO books, even those aimed at beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Introductory Problems.......2003-08-25

This is a quote from the great go site Sensei's Library ... :

"I was reading volume 1, and noticed how well the author introduces Go concepts to the complete beginner. For example:

Problem 1: capture
Problem 2: capture using the edge of board
Problem 3: capture using a corner, capture with a stone in atari
Problem 4: capturing multiple stones
Problem 5: local area may have unequal numbers of stones?
Problem 6: capturing multiple stones with a group in atari
Problem 7: as above, but away from an edge
Problem 8: capturing two groups at once
Problem 9: capturing big groups
Problem 10: capturing a big group with stone becoming atari"

Yes, some of the problems are simple, but there is something to be learned from all of them, regardless of the difficulty level. Even if some problems are simple to solve for a beginner, spotting them in the first place, specially in a real game situation is not always easy.
