GOOD CREATIVITY BOOK to complete your collection.......2003-04-13
I bought a LOT of creativity books(at least i had 20+ on my collection), and i think this is one of the GOOD ONE, among other books.
I particulary like the chapter on Methapor, and some of the samples of GAMES/QUIZ that i even use for my creativity seminar/training.
A lot of GAMES and PUZZLES there that is fun, interesting and useful to generate creative brusts.
The whole book is set as a CREATIVE KITCHEN with chapters like Food for thoughts, Appetite, Gather, Cut, Mix, Cook, Spice, Taste and Digest.
This book can be useful even standing alone, being read by itself. Or if you are interested in creativity, it can stand tall along with all the classics like A whack at the side of the head (best classic creativity book), Orbitting the giant hairball, Jump start your brain, The Mind Map book, and all De Bono book.
This book's approach is fun and it explain in a good sense a lot of creativity stage and provide a lot of fun games.
Hope you can enjoy the book as much as i do.

A description of the creativity process.......2001-01-04
Now this is an interesting book! It describes how YOU can be more creative. Maybe you think you're not? Well, according to this book creativity is a process you can learn. And I must say that after having read this book I now understand why I sometimes are very creative and sometimes not. For instance, I play the guitar and are sometimes in a very spirited mood for writing new songs. This usually occurs after having spent a few weeks listening to new albums. When I don't - I rarely come up with some new and exciting riffs. You have to have the urge to get these impulses, but then again you need the impulses.
I think both the title and the subtitle (games & puzzles to stimulate your creativity and imagination) are a bit misleading. The focus is on the process and the author divides this creativity process into 8 "phases", drawing a metaphor to cooking food: Appetite - hunger for ideas, gather - collect ideas, cut - analyze ideas, mix - combine ideas, cook - concentrate on ideas, spice - season ideas, taste - evaluate ideas, digest - assimilate ideas. Within each of these he gives you valuable tools you can use.
It seems to me that when you gather information (e.g. listen to records or research a specific topic) you unconsciously cut and mix it with data and knowledge you already have, and thus forming new patterns which become new ideas. Knowing the process you can also do this deliberate. How wonderful!
There are lots of other books which describes methods for collecting thoughts and ideas (and does that better), but no one I have read or heard about describes the process as good as this one. Just think about what kind of preparation you should impose on your colleagues before they enter your next brainstorming session...
This book really works!.......2000-11-26
I'm a copywriter for a national retail chain. I started to read this book at lunch one day, and i got through a couple of chapters. When I went back to the office, I continued working on one of my assignments that had a tight deadline. As I starting working, I could tell that my mind was more alert and I was coming up with more and different kinds of ideas.
If you feel like your brain has turned to mush due to daily routine or not venturing outside of your "thinking comfort zone," this book is for you!
A Few Stars Short of a Constellation.......2000-07-03
I recently purchased this book and was somewhat disappointed when I sat down to read it. The subtitle is "Games & Puzzles to Stimulate Your Creativity & Imagination". Actually, there are only some thirty such puzzles and many of them are 'old chestnuts'. However, my biggest complaint is the lack of accuracy. The very first puzzle (p. 20) has a mistake in it. Then in 'Mental Counting' (p. 161), the author claims that the letters O and U are not symmetrical about the vertical axis. As for 'Three-dimesional Dots' (p. 199) the text states "Below is a collection of random dots." Unfortunately, the random dots have been omitted. So much for "something remarkable" happening as the author claims. And how's this for one of the three (yup, only three) lateral thinking puzzles? What common word begins with IS, ends with ND, and has LA in the middle? I bet that really stretched your brain, didn't it? Sorry, but Mr. Wujec's editor should be fired. These glaring mistakes and omissions have scuttled any enjoyment I may have expected from this book. I suspect the author was motivated by the commercial success of his previous book. He should have waited until he had something of value before publishing this schlock.

fascinating unique thriller.......2007-04-27
In Philadelphia thirty year old former mental patient Richard Keene has supersonic hearing that makes it difficult for him to live a normal life though for the first time he is trying by moving into a Manhattan high riser and working as an audiometric technician. After completing his exercise program, Richard takes the elevator down, but gets off on the wrong floor. He hears noises that lead him to believe the resident of 2307 has strangled someone to death. Shook up he hustles down to his apartment one floor below.
Richard reports what he heard to the building superintendent and the cops, but neither believes a nut case like him especially when the accused is renowned Dr. Davis Braun and no corpse surfaces. Still refusing to give it up, Richard needs to prove he may have issues, but his hearing is perfect even when murder occurs behind closed doors.
Richard owns this novel as his super-hearing is a handicap that has brought him anguish and placed him on the brink of insanity. Thus when it is his word vs. a respected doctor, who is the cops, the tenants and manager, and readers going to believe? SOUND OF MIND is a fascinating thriller due to the lead character and his unique sense of hearing.

Customer Reviews:
More Than a Warlock.......2003-03-21
Mind Out of Time is a collection of stories covering a span from 1981 to 2003. They cover a variety of SF and fantasy themes.
"The Warlock's Grandfather" is an odd story of either madness or canniness. After a long life of dedication to the family business, Count Rory begins to live in a dream world of his own making. This humiliates some of his children and their spouses, but elates two of his grandchildren.
"Coronach of the Bell" is a sad tale warning of the dangers of intervention in an ecology with insufficient knowledge. At the same time, it is a tale of forgiveness.
The earliest story, "The Martyrdom of St. Vidicon of Cathode", is a tale of Murphy's Law as manifested in technology. A backstory of the Warlock series, this tale might be seen as a farce to non-technical readers, but it is a tribute to human perseverance to anyone who has had to deal with electronic equipment. It may be contrived, but there is more than a smidgen of truth in it. High tech has its own version of praying in the foxholes.
"Pride and Puppetry" is obviously about prejudice, but also about loyalty and justice. When is it appropriate to allow your liege lord to be humiliated?
"Gordon's Quest" is a story of redemption through martyrdom. Unlike St. Vidicon, Gordon is seeking death to achieve paradise. Sound familiar? Of course, the author doesn't write just a journey toward death, but throws in a few exploitive gods that use Gordon to put down another god who has been coopted by the Taiping revolution.
"Who Ghost There?" is a romantic tale of a little girl, Anthea, with negligent parents who finds parental love from the family ghost. It seems Sir Roderick cannot rest until he recovers his head, so he has been consoling and protecting lonely children for centuries. Just to enlivened the plot, there are two suitors for Anthea's hand, a pair of the last Faerie in England, and a foreign spirit who manifests as a ball of fire.
The latest story, "Mind Out of Time", is also a backstory of the Warlock series. Angus McAran is deformed in body, but brilliant of mind. After graduating with a electrical engineering degree with a minor in physics, he became an inventor for a large corporation for a six figure salary and a well equipped laboratory. The company paid him a good amount for each patent issued, but then retained the royalties. While the money was minor matter, the lack ownership of the patents still irked him. Then, one day he found himself faced with a man -- actually a Neanderthal -- from his future (and other times) who advised him to invent a time machine and free himself from the tyranny of being a salaryman.
These stories display the humor and characterization often found in the author's various series, but also show a greater degree of versatility than found in the series work. While this collection brings all his stories into print, one may hope that the author will produce a few more in the near future.
Recommended for Stasheff fans and anyone who enjoys humor and a bit of wisdom in SF and fantasy settings.
strong collection, especially the titled novella.......2003-02-04
This collection from the author of The Warlock In Spite of Himself and subsequent mythos consists of six sensational short stories and a long terrific time travel tale "MIND OUT OF TIME" that expands the Christopher Stasheff cosmos to the merriment of his followers.
Each of the shorter tales is well written with strong characters while supporting the Stasheff cosmos underlying supposition that misfits struggle to find a group or a loved one to belong to and reciprocally belongs to the antihero too. Mr. Stasheff expands on his theme in a two-page introduction to this anthology that his supporters will want to read. Fans of the Wizard universe will gain much delight with these six entertaining tales starring humanity's outcasts.
However, this book belongs to the title novella, MIND OUT OF TIME. Though born with a deformed body, Angus McArcan is brilliant having secured many patents for the company that employs him. When co-worker Yorick talks about a Neanderthal skull found in Michigan, Angus decides to astral time travel to find out if Neanderthals ever made it to North America. He lands in the body of Alaspar, a Neanderthal living in what will one day be Michigan. Angus learns from Alaspar that he will invent a time machine, be the founder of GRIPE (Guardians of the Rights of Individuals, especially patent holders) and will develop a sense of future. When he returns to the present, he meets Yorick again who is also a time traveler sent to save him from those who don't want GRIPE to succeed. This is a whimsical time travel tale starring an unusual but likable hero.

interesting English investigative tale .......2006-02-04
In the Liverpool area, more because of Detective Bolis' interest in him as a prime suspect, Jack Stirrup of Stirrup Wines asks his solicitor Harry Devlin to learn what happened to his wife Alison, who vanished. Harry begins making inquiries as he tries to trace Alison's last known steps though he wonders if his client simply disposed of an unwanted spouse. As he begins making progress, the investigation takes a bizarre spin when Claire, Jack's daughter from his first wife, also turns up missing.
At the same time, Harry looks into the Stirrup family; The Beast stalks Liverpool raping women. While Harry finds himself attracted to advocate Valerie Kaiwar whom he meets at the Law Courts, he ponders if there is a link between the missing Stirrup females and the Beast as he starting to believe the rapist is somehow involved.
This is an interesting English investigative tale that stars a likable hero struggling with a case in which his client seems to be hiding things, the cops wants him to stay out, the prime culprit appears to be a rapist, and worst of all he is in love. All of this and more blends nicely together into a delightful whodunit that will please those readers who enjoy the star to be of a skeptical suspicious mind trusting no one including his heart.

Set Sail for Murder: A Henrie O Mystery (Henrie O Mysteries)

Customer Reviews:
Some decent stories.......2001-11-27
Mystery short stories are not usually my favourite genre, simply because there's not enough room to get really "mysterious." I generally find the solution either obvious or contrived. Several of the stories in this collection get around that simply by letting the reader know "who dun it" from the get-go, and then having the sleuth set out to prove it.
Still, I was not impressed with one story in which the sleuth decides she knows the culprit and, unable to prove it, proceeds to plant evidence. I mean, that happens in real life, but in mystery stories the fun is having the sleuth figure it all out and either nab the bad guy or be SURE -- and I wasn't satisfied with her reasoning. I wasn't sure enough I believed she had the right person to cheer her decision.
That also happened in the the story in which someone is garroted. Henrie O immediately starts looking for a suspect old enough to have worked in Intelligence during the Second World War, because only such a person would think of garroting as a method of murder. Speaking as one who's seen "The Godfather" and immediately reached a completely different conclusion, I wasn't impressed with her logic. Hart allows her sleuths to make unjustifiable assumptions and get away with them, which must be very nice for them, but these leaps in logic can be frustrating to the reader! When I read a story, it is a big problem when the sleuth claims to have proved something and I can see several other explanations for the situation.
And oh, all right: by the last Henrie O story, I was kind of sick of her "Roman coin profile" and the assertion that she packed more surprises into a single day "than O Henry ever packed into his short stories." Somebody needs to tell Ms Hart there's a reason they call them "O Henry endings" -- the single surprise comes at the end. And if you read three or four O Henry stories in a row, you can see the twist coming. That, unfortunately, is what started happening with these stories long before I had finished the anthology.
Overall, no worse than most mystery short stories, but nothing to get excited about.
Crime on Her Mind.......2000-05-21
Carolyn Hart has been described as "The New Agatha Christie" by Mystery Scene. Crime on Her Mind is a collection of Hart's short stories. Female sleuths looking for answers is the common theme of most of the tales which offer a variety of settings, relationships and crimes.
Women make terrific sleuths, Hart feels, because they are nosey. Her most notable sleuth is HENRIE O (Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins), a retired reporter with a talent for trouble and a keen nose for facts. Henrie O's yearning for the facts to add up, her thirst for adventure, plus mountain climbing and lock-picking skills definitely seperate her from the stereotype of a sweet little pie-baking granny! Although Henrie O does bake on occasion.

Book Description
Jeff Resnick hardly knew his well-heeled half-brother. But after suffering a fractured skull in a vicious mugging, he reluctantly accepts the fact that he has a long and brutal recovery to face - and his closest of kin can provide him with the time and place to do it. Now, Jeff is haunted by unexplained visions of a heinous crime - a banker stalked, killed, and eviscerated like a ten-point buck. When Matt Sumner's murder is discovered, a still-recovering Jeff realizes this was what he had seen. Jeff must not only convince himself of his newfound psychic ability, but also his skeptical brother, Richard Alpert. Since Sumner was Richard's banker, both brothers have a stake in finding out what happened. With Richard's reluctant help, Jeff's investigation leads him to Sumner's belligerent family and hard-nosed business associates, none of whom want him snooping around. When Jeff discovers a second victim, he knows he must relentlessly chase his quarry, even if it means risking his brother's life.
L. L. Bartlett lives in Rochester, NY, and is a member of Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, and Romance Writers of America.

Murder on the mind - a killing thought.......2007-10-01
After a brutal mugging in NYC, Jeff Resnick struggles to patch up his life, accept his new psychic abilities, and attempt to use those abilities to help solve a gruesome murder of a banker in Buffalo, New York. The slim book is tightly written and moves briskly forward, a great asset for any mystery. A former insurance investigator downsized out of a job prior to the mugging, Jeff takes the tantalizing clues his on again/off again psychic abilities provide and combines them with sound detective skills to hunt down the killer until he pushes the killer too far threatening his domestic situation. The main plot is intriguing, well done, and a solid read for any mystery lover. The secondary plot surrounding his domestic situation plodded a bit and lacked depth. Still, it's a four out of five star read for the mystery reader in me. For those mystery readers who like the psychic angle, it might climb a bit higher.
Good All-around Mystery with a Twist.......2007-09-25
L.L. Bartlett's MURDER ON THE MIND is just what I look for in a mystery these days: a book with a balance of plot, character, and something extra. Mystery readers have read it all, so writing a good whodunit requires a meld of good writing with an intriguing element that make the story go in an unexpected direction. Bartlett succeeds on both counts.
Jeff Resnick is hurt, unemployed, dependent on his brother ... and psychic, apparently the result of his injury. As the mystery of who killed a local banker unfolds, he deals with his own doubts and aversion to his "gift" as well as his brother's and that of the police who must be convinced he just "knows" what happened to the eviscerated victim.
What Barlett does well is avoid some traps common to paranormal mysteries. Jeff is a believable character and neither his brother nor the cop descend to the stereotypical role of non-believers who ignore the evidence before them. Neither does the paranormal element get so "woo-woo" that disbelief can no longer be held at bay. Everyone in the story is real, and I accepted Jeff's ability and sympathized with the fact that he wasn't any happier about believing in it than those around him were.
Jeff as a character is well-rounded, and he grows within the story, learning that some of the things we believe as kids are not quite the way we perceived them. As he recovers from his physical injuries, he takes the first tentative steps toward a new level of maturity, finding that accepting the support of others doesn't make a person weak, and that repayment of that support doesn't have to be by tangible means.
MURDER ON THE MIND was published by Five Star Press but is now in paperback through Worldwide Mystery, available on the eHarlequin website beginning Oct. 1st. It's well worth reading, and one can only hope that there is more to come about Jeff Resnick as he begins his second life with second sight.
A Fascinating "Mind"-set.......2006-04-01
If it weren't for bad luck, Jeff Resnick would have no luck at all. Just when Jeff thinks his life is on the upswing after sustaining corporate downsizing and personal tragedy, he is viciously mugged by teen-aged thugs in New York City. The injuries leave him with more than a shattered body; his independence is also shattered because he must now ask for help from his estranged half-brother, Richard Alpert, who insists Jeff come back to Buffalo to recover. Jeff reluctantly agrees.
Adjusting to life back in Buffalo is difficult. Not only does Jeff have to come to terms with being dependent on someone for help, he has to recover from the skull fracture he sustained in the attack. And there is the matter of the vivid mental images he keeps having - images of the victim of a savage murder, the overwhelming feelings of the murderer and those of a terrified witness to the crime.
Seeing Jeff come to terms with the surprising new circumstances of his life, including the new "ability" his injury seems to have awakened is what propels Murder on the Mind and takes the reader on Jeff's often harrowing journey. L.L. Bartlett's clear, taut prose keeps the reader wanting to know more as the tale unfolds and the core truths are revealed about the murder, the murderer and Jeff's new-found insight. Bartlett also leaves a few intriguing questions unanswered, begging more tales of Jeff, Richard and the wonderfully-drawn supporting characters in the book.
I highly recommend Murder on the Mind, a fast-paced and original mystery with an unexpected setting and a very unconventional investigator. I look forward seeing more of Jeff Resnick and the environs around Buffalo, New York very soon!
Detective Story with a Psychic Twist.......2006-03-24
The story content and flow of the plot is exciting and easy to read. I found myself becoming attached to the main character and wanting to help him find the perpetrator of the crimes of murder. This book is well written and I'm looking forward to another adventure in the literary life of Ms. Bartlett's creation, Jeff Resnick.
Fast flowing book.......2006-03-01
Reviewed By Claire Gilligan for Reader Views (2/06)
When I first start this book I got so excited and couldn't wait to get to know the story line and the characters. "Murder on the Mind" brought each character to you in a nice clean, uncomplicated, exciting way. Jeff Resnick is the main character. He is one of those guys who most people like from the start. When Jeff suffers from a mugging in New York his whole world changes and not just the everyday things we do in life. All of a sudden he knows and feels things.
Jeff's half brother Richard recently inherited a house that belonged to Richard's
grandparents. Jeff is invited to move in with Richard and recover from the mugging injuries - a broken arm, several bruises, and a severe case of head trauma, along with memory loss. He also acquired as sense of knowing things. He has no idea how he knows, or, where these feelings and thoughts are coming from.
As Jeff's feelings get more and more vivid and overpowering, he goes out on a limb he would never have taken before his mugging. He had always led a centered life. Now he is snooping in places he shouldn't and talking to people he shouldn't be talking to. Will Jeff ever figure out why he is feeling this way? Will he find the face he is looking for from his dreams?
In my opinion L.L. Bartlett did a wonderful job for not just the general reader but for several different genres of readers. She writes so the reader is able to relate to the characters and feel the emotions. I loved all the characters in the book. They made me think back if I had experienced anything they had, and when I realized that I had not, I was upset and found myself wishing that I did - just once.
"Murder on the Mind" is a fast flowing book. The characters keep you interested in their next moves, their next thoughts, and what the end will bring. I highly recommend this book.

Thrilling novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat!.......2007-09-26
This is the first novel by Mark Dunn. In time he will undoubtedly be remembered as a premire horror/mystery writer of his time. He can be compared to Stephen King in the twists and intesity of his writing. I must read novel indeed!
exhilarating paranormal thriller .......2006-05-25
In California, the slasher killed Miranda and Vince Gardener and their son Alex; their sixteen years old daughter Cora survived the razor attack, but fell into a coma. Her grandfather, psychologist Dr. Harold Davies brought his comatose granddaughter to his Davies Clinic in Stone Beach, Maine. His efforts to help her so far have failed though he emptied out the place of any other patients. Helping Dr. Davies is Dr. Cole Johnstone, but he has personal demons of his own to resolve since his son died.
Cole believes that Cora is reaching out to them in a paranormal way though Davies rejects his theory as garbage. When Davies becomes ill, Cole asks his former lover Sarah Delacort to help him as she understands the para-world better than anyone else he knows. At the same time, the slasher suffers migraines caused by his connection to the survivor. He takes a leave of absence from his job and heads east leaving a trail of corpses as he comes to Maine to rid himself of the surviving headache.
A GIRL IN MIND is an exhilarating paranormal thriller which grips the audience from the moment the clinic's overnight employee flees in fear as he receives messages from beyond and never slows down until the final confrontation below the clinic. The action-packed story line hooks readers who hope to see full justice especially when the comatose Cora sends help messages and Argento struggling with horrific headaches in which he recognizes the source is coming to complete the job. Mark P. Dunn keeps the suspense high with this entertaining thriller.
