Customer Reviews:
A must read for anyone working with families!.......2001-01-24
This book is a primer on how to do solution-focussed work with families. The great thing about these techniques is that although the author is writing from a child protection perspective, and she is working with families, she describes the techniques and principles in such a way that the reader can see that the solution focused approach can be applied to a wide variety of situations, including individual work. The author's writing style is fluid and enjoyable, such that I was actually enthralled by the book and didn't want to put it down. Her case examples ring true. The book really shows the importance of joining with clients, and not needing to take on a top-down expert attitude. I was able to apply the material to my practice immediately. The author gets bonus points for actually having an introduction and preface that was actually quite valuable, as opposed to being filler, which can be the case with some books.
Great introduction to solution-focused work with families........1999-05-19
Excellent resource for anyone wishing to re-energize their practice with families, especially families referred by/to child protection agencies.Challenges the practitioner to re-think many basic assumptions and practices. This book can help to re-shape your perspective. The material provokes you to think differently about the families you work with and your usual interventions. It is refreshing to focus on solution-building rather than being bogged down by preoccupation with problems, although making that shift is a tall order! This book was a pleasure to read.

Book Description
In this compelling book, the authors present an innovative therapeutic model for understanding and treating adults from emotionally abusive or neglectful families? families the authors call narcissistic. Narcissistic families have a parental system that is, for whatever reason (job stress, alcoholism, drug abuse, mental illness, physical disability, lack of parenting skills, self-centered immaturity), primarily involved in getting its own needs met. The children in such narcissistic family systems try to earn love, attention and approval by satisfying their parents' needs, thus never developing the ability to recognize their own needs or create strategies for getting them met. By outlining the theoretical framework of their model and using dozens of illustrative clinical examples, the authors clearly illuminate specific practice guidelines for treating these individuals.
Stephanie Donaldson-Pressman is a therapist, consultant, and trainer. She is known for her work with dysfunctional families, particularly with survivors of incest. Robert M. Pressman is the editor-in-chief and president of the Joint Commission for the Development of the Treatment and Statistical Manual for Behavioral and Mental Disorders.
Customer Reviews:
Fine readable exposition of a basic human problem........2007-09-21
Though there is possibly a genetic link to narcissism, most narcissism is learned through one's family of origin. The authors do a fine job of uncovering what one is to look for as they dissect the usual cradle of narcissism: the narcissistic family. Their use of real examples made the book all the more helpful and illuminating.
Though one needs to be careful in doing so, the reader can also see the parallels between narcissistic families and narcissistic organizations (which are usually familial in nature, anyway.)
Fine addition to the discussion about this too prevalent, destructive human phenomenon.
Narcissism in families.......2007-08-27
Excellent book. The writing is clear and the examples are relevant. The authors are responsible in distinguishing between narcissism as a basic human condition, and pathological narcissism. The book answered questions I had about parents who put their own needs ahead of those of their children, the effects that narcissism has on children and adults, and much more on family dynamics.
Understanding the dynamics in a Narcissistic Family.......2007-06-22
Robert & Stephanie Pressman's Book The Narcissistic Family Diagnosis & Treatment is a must read for those rasied in unhealthy and disfunyctional families. The book was written for therapists working with patients in treatment. The writing is very clear and straight forward, an easy to read work written in laymens terms. What I found most helpful about the book is the suggestions put forward by the authors on learning and healing from negative experiences within the Narcissitic family. And how many others have experienced the pain and suffering presented in these types of families. Chapter two defines the characteristics of the Narcissistic Family and gives various accounts of patients experiences. I found this chapter most helpful, it depicted what seemed to be normal families, but described the covert tactics of Narcissistic parents. The second half of the books offers treatment suggestions and strategies for dealing with negative emotions produced within the Narcissistic family dynamic. This was a great book very helpful and informative.
A MUST FOR ANYONE WITH A FAMILY( EVERYONE).......2007-05-17
Well, let me start by saying the book is great, but be careful why you're reading it, the book will take you to a rollercoaster ride as you start identifying your own childhood issues, as in my case,my therapist recommended I read it, But get prepared emotionally to cry, to vent out
with a friend, to take it slowly, because I started having a bad reaction
on the first couple of chapters, why I say is great, because all of us have issues to work through and hopefully in the case of people who have children you dont repeat this pattern with them, in my case I dont, but this book gave me much needed knowledge to understand the mistakes my parents made, how I can heal, and how to not
do this to my kids the day I have them.
Interesting Read, Awesome Self-Help.......2007-05-01
Overall Highly Recommended Reading. It gives one perspective on Narcissism in one's history and one's environment and is able to make the reader aware of certain realities that previous were incomprehensible. This gives the reader the power to affect change within the self to prevent future harm and to reduce damage done to one's own personality by Narcissistic Individuals.
A Must Read.

Book Description
Editor Nancy Chase defines parentified children as parents to their parents—those are the children who are compelled to fulfill the role of parent at the expense of their own developmentally appropriate needs and pursuits. With uncanny sensibilities, these children are attuned to their parents’ moods, wishes, vulnerabilities, and nuances. This volume is a comprehensive study of parentification in the family, covering both theoretical as well as clinical topics. Contributors have written chapters that are grouped into two sections: theory and research, and clinical and broader contextual perspectives. Part One of this book covers research related to parentification and gender, work addiction, families with a disabled or chronically ill child, and assessment for clinical or research practices. The chapters having a stronger clinical or contextual emphasis address varied interventions and theoretical orientations and posit parentification in cultural and ethnic contexts. Students, academics, and professionals in areas of family studies, social work, child abuse, developmental psychology, school psychology, and family therapy will find Burdened Children an excellent resource on this phenomenon.

Book Description
The influence of the family on individual behavior has long been debated but has never received comprehensive coverage in the psychopathology literature. Providing a much-needed, exhaustive look at the research in this area, Family Psychopathology shows how many individual psychopathologies stem from external (contextual or relational) rather than internal (neurological or physiological) conditions. Chapters describe a variety of dysfunctional patterns and explore how they lead to different kinds of individual, marital, and family disorders. Preventive measures and treatment approaches are critically examined.
Customer Reviews:
This book is great if you want to be 50 years out of date........2005-02-05
This book is full out completely sexist and outdated information. For example, it refers to overbearing parenting as "Momism", suggests that schizophrenia is caused by bad parenting, and regularly cites questionable research from the 1950s. I suspect that the positive reviews for this book were posted by the publisher or by the author himself. This book will actually damage you if you try to use it to learn how to be a counselor.
Skip this book and read something that is actually informed by the developments from the last 50 years. Maybe in 2050 L'Abate will write about the things that are going on now.
A look inside the family crucible........2002-06-03
The mental health field has a propensity to look for the root causes of psychopathology either within the person, i.e. intra-
psychic or neurobiological, or as a result of socialization. For some obscure reason, the family component is rarely considered. This book seeks to remedy this oversight.
Family Pathology takes a probing look at the relational roots of dysfunctional behavoir. Genetics, physiology, and society may play roles in the development of maladaptive behvior, but the individual is embedded in a family structure that mediates these influences for better of for worse.
This book also includes chapters on family therapy, preventive approaches, and parent training programs. To date, the psychopathology literature has not had such a thorough treatment of the family's role in dysfunctional behavior; this book changes that by offering an insightful look into the "nature-nurture" assumptions.
A must read for grad. students and practioners alike.

A great book - read this!.......1999-10-18
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the slightest interest in multiple personality disorder, art therapy, puppetry, psychiatry, object relations theory, story telling or mental illness in general. Through Jenny's story Gerity simultaneously gives a fascinating accurate account of patient care in a mental health facility while also educating the reader about the various psychological theories that staff utilize for treatment. This book was a pleasure to read and would be enjoyable for everyone but I think it should be mandatory reading for anyone who works with the mentally ill population.

Book Description
Often recounted in a clinical manner from a therapist's perspective, the story of family therapy is many times viewed in an academic, theoretical context. Such analyses, while scholarly, tend to lack the real stories, the heart and soul of the counseling experience for those in it. Now, however, such a story is available. Following one family through their years of therapy, this book delves into the hearts and minds of the characters. So by the story's end, readers will come to view the family members not so much as characters in a therapist's drama, but rather as heroes of their own stories. And in turn, the readers will then be able to reflect on their own experiences. In this book, Mike Nichols, a family therapist, offers his narrative "diary" as he develops and enters into the process of family therapy with one family. In addition to providing his own personal account of the therapy process as the counselor, he includes the rich, detailed study of a family as they progress through life's stages from their initial courtship to the departure of their children from home. Social workers, therapists or others interested in the topic.
