Book Description

A Dungeon Master 2-pack that includes both a new D&D screen and a bonus d20 Modern screen -- in landscape format with new art.

Useful to anyone running any type of roleplaying campaign, this Deluxe Dungeon Master Screens 2-pack contains both a Dungeons & Dragons screen and a bonus screen for the d20 Modern Roleplaying Game.

The tables on the back of the Dungeon Master's Screen have been revised and updated to comply with the changes made in the new version 3.5 core rulebooks released in 2003.

Every table includes a page number reference you can use to look up more detailed information. You’ll also find some tables modified specifically for this screen that will help you get the information you need as quickly as possible during play.

Also included is a bonus four-panel screen geared toward the action-packed world of your d20 Modern campaign. Because both screens fully support the d20 System, they can be used separately or together by an experienced Dungeon Master or Gamemaster.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not bad if you can find it under 10 bucks w/ shipping.......2007-05-09

The tables include:

-Equipment hardness/hitpoints
-Substance hardness/hitpoints
-Break/Burst DCs
-Items affected by magical attacks
-Size and AC of objects
-Object hardness/hitpoints
-Wall stats
-Door stats
-Turning undead
-Increase/Decrease weapon damage by size
-Attack roll modifiers
-AC modifiers
-Influencing NPC attitudes
-Missing w/ a thrown weapon figure
-Climb check DCs
-Listen check DCs
-Combat Actions (AoO)
-Concentration Check DCs
-Skills list (Armor check, AoO)
-Ability modifiers
-Movement and Distance
-Hampered movement
-Armored/Encumbered speeds
-Max distance for spot checks
-Detect Magic stats
-Detect Evil stats
-Light sources and illumination

While the list is comprehensive, I was looking for some random encounter tables, oh well. The screen is short and while I didn't think that would be an issue, it is. I'm now paperclipping the D20 Modern screen (which has a few D&D relevant things on it, but not many) on top of the D&D one (they're the same size exactly).

3 out of 5 stars Cool, but not necessary.......2007-04-03

Cool looking, but you could do without them. Nice quick info on inside, but again could do without.

1 out of 5 stars Never shipped.......2007-02-08

We ordered this a month ago. We kept waiting and checking.. not shipped yet. Wait some more, not shipped yet. The item said "usually ships in 1 to 2 weeks" however, in 4 weeks, still "not shipped yet". Recomend if you want this, to buy it somewhere else. We ended up canceling this order and getting it somewhere else. Amazon doesn't know how to ship this particualr item.

2 out of 5 stars Nice, but pricey.......2007-01-12

The charts selected for the inside of the screen are surprisingly useful; basically, they selected a lot of the things that most frequently come into play during a dungeon crawl, but that most people wouldn't bother to learn or remember. Things like various item and material hardnesses, common modifiers to AC, various types of actions and whether they provoke Attacks of Opportunity, skills, movement penaltes, light, and auras for both magic and evil/good. The creators were thoughtful enough to include the book and page number for various charts in case you need to get more info. On the downside, as other reviews mentioned it is surprisingly short for a screen, and pretty high-priced considering what you get. Yeah, yeah; you get a bonus D20 modern screen. Wow. I'd say that seven bucks would be a more reasonable price; five if it didn't come with a D20 modern screen.

5 out of 5 stars It ain't that bad -- it's actually pretty good.......2006-09-22

Generally my opinion is that a screen is a screen is a screen. However, this screen is actually better than most. I like the landscape, 4-panel format because it means I can see and be seen over the screen, while it still hides my map, my notepad and my dice rolls. It also has a better center of gravity since it is lower and wider, which means it almost never falls over, even when struck by a handful of dice or my marauding 18-month old. That is not a claim that most portrait-oriented screens can make.

Is the screen a black-out room and cone of silence rolled into one? Of course not. If you need the full height of the older-styled 11" screens, this one won't work for you. But really, if you are playing with people who can't keep their eyes off the occasional flash of paper behind the DM's screen, don't blame the screen; get new friends.

For my part, the most important part is that WoTC (a company I don't think much of normally) actually gave some thought to what was on the screen. The inside is well thought out, with useful charts and tables easy to hand. Easily the best part is the full listing of all actions, and whether they are free, standard, or movement equivalent, and whether they provoke an Attack of Opportunity or not. The table with hardness ratings for standard items is also useful for those spur-of-the-moment actions when the PCs want to break down a random door, chop that chest open, or split a table in two.

Normally I wouldn't bother to review a screen, but this one has such an unfairly low rating that I almost feel sorry for it. It's a good product; I use it in every session, it keeps the players' eyes off the important stuff, and it's durable enough that even after 2 years of use it's in quite good shape. If for some reason you don't have a screen already, you could do a lot worse than this one.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comes with a Wonderful Map of Eberron.......2007-09-11

I really like this DM screen. My kids and I are playing and the art helps them feel like they are in Eberron. The map put me over the top. I purchased this product knowing of its errors a priori. However, the map was a nice surprise. I must have missed it in the other reviews.

5 out of 5 stars The Only DM's Screen You Will Ever Need.......2006-09-03

I bought this expecting it to be only used during my upcoming Eberron campaign - I was dead wrong. This has every table you will need, and some you won't for the non-Eberron games. It's horizontal so I don't feel like I'm at a seperate part of the table than the gamers. It provides all the privacy I need for rolling dice and stashing papers. I can wrap it all the way around, almost to both edges of the table around me, at a comfortable visibility level. I could have a player sitting next to me and successfully hide my rolls.
Definately a recommended purchase - especially for the low price.

3 out of 5 stars Warning about the Eberron DM Screen.......2005-08-22

    Overall the screen is good;
The landscape format is fantastic, you can see over the screen when you need to see what's going on, yet it still provides the DM some privacy.
The artwork is great (even if it is a reprint of artwork from "The Order of the Emerald Claw" adventure cover, it is expanded).
The details and tables on the screen, in general are excellent.
And the map that is included is an awesome play aid.

    BUT.....
HOUSE JORASCO IS MISSING FROM THE LIST OF DRAGON MARKED HOUSES!!!!
I mean it's just a basic cut and paste from previously printed lists of Dragon Marked Houses OR any basic editing should have caught this oversight.
UNFORGIVABLE, especially when, of the 3 Eberron specific tables included on the Deluxe Eberron Dungeon Master's Screen, the main one is incomplete!
This poor quality is becoming more and more common from Wizards D&D releases of late. Very, very disappointing. As you may be able to tell, I am still furious about this oversight, so I just wanted to warn people of the incompleteness of the product, when compared to its description on the back of the product.

    Enough said...

4 out of 5 stars The only screen you'll ever need.......2005-08-21

This is, quite possibly, the best screen yet released for D&D, regardless of setting. Including tables for everything from Cleric's turning checks to Influencing NPC attitudes, as well as a handy Days of the Week and Months of the Year guide for Eberron's calendar (among a large number of other goodies), it's clearly meant for a high-roleplay campaign. Things like Item Breac DC's and what actions provoke what are also included, and it does quite a bit to lower the ammount of time some of the more rules-driven areas of the game take up in game time. Also, since it uses the D&D Deluxe Screen landscape format, I really don't feel half as "cut-off" from the players as when using my Forgotten Realms screen.

Still, there are areas in which the screen could be improved. There are three emblems (the same as the O in the Eberron logo) on the DM's side of it in which another table could be placed. Also, when viewed from a high angle the text doesn't contrast very well with the table background... and since my group generally plays around a coffee table, my players can easilly tell when I'm looking something up when I have to lower my eyes almost to the level of the screen. It's something to look over before the game while players are building characters (or before they arrive) or during the occasional in-session break, but otherwise to be reserved for really sticky deal-with-the-rules-lawyer situations.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars FR DM Screen.......2006-11-03

This is a very helpful item. I recommend this screen to anyone DMing in the Faerun setting. I have not decided if this or the regular DM screen is more helpful. Having both is always good.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for a screen.......2005-07-07

I ordered this screen to replace my old one, the 3rd version screen, which has been in use for some 4 years or so. Based on reviews here, I decided to go with the Forgotten Realms screen, and it was a great choice.
First, I really liked its art, especially in compare to my old, 3rd V. screen that had too many elements in it. The FR screen's art is divided into 2-2 surface artwork, probably featuring Drizzt and Artemis (that can be seen here using the "look inside the book feature"), and two parts that are a scene from the underdark, an adventuring band fighting 2 orcs and a beholder. Unlike the 3rd V screen, each of the 4 folding parts is much focused, and the art is better, in my opinion, than the 3rd V one.

On the back side of the screen, the choice of tables is quite different than the 3rd V screen. It is covering the action types, cover and concealment like the 3rd V one, but it isn't covering skill checks. Instead, they have put in the weapon and armor tables, plus tables needed to determine object AC and hp, FR calendars, undead turning, movement modifiers, and more. It takes some time to find all this in the book, though, as I mentioned, they gave up the quite handy skills and Dc's.

The included 32 pages booklet is used to create encounters in the FR quickly for levels 1-20, and it is a good addition, and more than you will get from other screens.

If you are looking for a screen, I would strongly recommend you to get this one. Yes, it's for Version 3.0, and you might not even be playing in the FR, but it is featuring good artworks to enjoy and handy information for the DM.

1 out of 5 stars Lack of information.......2002-12-25

No wild magic tables, no XP tables, nothing that I was able to use in a campaign, maybe except for the fact that it was a screen ...

5 out of 5 stars No FR DM should be without one!.......2002-03-22

This is hands-down one of the most useful tools a Realms DM can own. The Screen is decent, with some useful info on the inside, and some nice art, but the real prize and reason for buying this screen is the Realms-tailored Encounters booklet. You can generate Dungeon Encounters and Wilderness Encounters that include the beasties from the Campaign Setting and Monsters of Faerun, and on top of that, the Wilderness Encounters have sections for specific Realms locations where appropriate. If you're going to do FR, you should buy this as soon as you can, it's worth three times its cost in usefulness.

5 out of 5 stars good dm reference guide.......2002-03-21

has alot of information for the DM to use at his/her fingertips, instead of having to flip through books or bookmark books. also i think the random encounter tables are very useful, for DMs in the forgotten realm scenario. and extremly useful piece for any DM

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-09-12

This is a good screen. I do prefer the shorter, landscape format of GM screen produced for Warhammer Fantasy roleply. I wonder why WoTC hasn't made this type of change since D&D 3.5 is basically a watered down miniatures games now instead of an RPG. Anyway, screen good.

1 out of 5 stars Cheap material, save your money........2002-04-12

I just picked up the latest DM screen and was totally disappointed. The good: there are some useful tables and having the screen in front of you should save a you a little time. The bad: the screen is not made from sturdy card stock, it's barely more than plastic coated paper (Yes, the thing is covered in plastic - but it's not like you think. The plastic is added as a coating to paper to make it more rigid and glossy, it does not serve as any sort of protection), the screen sags and does not stand up as nicely as the older heavy cardboard screens. Seem like WotC was more interested in cutting costs with this one then putting out a useful tool. Too bad, most of the new products have been pretty good. I guess everyone makes mistakes.

2 out of 5 stars What? Are we reviewing the same product here?.......2001-11-07

Our group found this product very nearly entirely useless. A poorly executed design plus the accompanying amateurish artwork makes this item a sore thumb in the WOTC product line.
It should be noted here that I am a longtime DM and player of D&D in all of its incarnations (1st through 3rd, over 20 years) and a great fan of the latest edition, and most of the products WOTC have released. This however, is a huge exception. Just save your money and make your own.

    3 out of 5 stars OKAY.......2001-11-07

I never really understood the DM screen. to me it was useless but its very informative for beginers who dont know the rules very well.

    3 out of 5 stars Has potential.......2001-07-27

I bought this screen and found it useful for a couple of things: It does act as a literal screen, offering the DM some privacy. That's important so the players can be surprised. It does have some decent art on the outside. The fantasy art kind of helps the players be in the "D&D mood" nicely. But I'll tell you something, Easley could made those pictures 100 times better. He is a phenominal artist; those pictures are not up to his potential. One amusing thing is all the characters on the DMs screen are from the core books. Tordek, Ember, etc. So if you grew to like those characters as I did, they are there in action.

The charts inside are decent. I wound up making my own charts on my computer, and paper-clipping them on the inside of the screen. Basically I played about five games with my players, noted what information I was constantly searching for, and made my own info sheets. What was the barbarians new hit and damage with a two-handed weapon when he rages again? You get the idea. That setup has worked really well.

If you want a DM's screen this one is good, but I suggest tailoring it for your specific needs. Another plus is WotC didn't go crazy on the price of this item, unlike some of the class books which go for [price] each! This product could have gotten 4 or 5 stars if it were physically sturdier, laminated, had Easley's best art, and if were made to hold whatever info you want, by using clips, or whatever.

3 out of 5 stars Not very useful........2001-07-03

Had it out for one game, but ending up putting it away as I never refered to it. Would have to nice to have XP charts, ability bonus, Quick NPC stat charts, etc.

This DM's screen features the excellent expanded rules from the D&D Masters Set. There are tables governing the combat, clerical turning, saving throws, spellcasting, and more. Also featured is an excellent mini-adventure, The Spindle, which sets the high-level heroes on the path to immortality.

      4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2003-05-08

In all honesty I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this book, because the book bills it as "nasty tricks to use on your players" when it really should have been... "The semi-complete list of darklords." I have no idea why the witch-hunter prestige class was in this book, as it was completely out of place, but the rest of the book was actually very well done, with a map (albeit small) showing which domains were controlled by which darklord and then a listing of the darklords.

These listings make up the meat of the book and are definitely worth the price of admission for those who do not have the older 2nd edition info. They tell you the history, personality, looks, powers, current position, and weaknesses of the darklords. Every single entry was done to my satisfaction and merited 5 stars for that information alone. The reason the last star dropped off is that the information wasn't complete. They show you the list of all the darklords in Ravenloft and then give you info on only half of them. I would have paid for another hardcover overpriced S&S book if it had just listed them all.

The only other issue I have with the book is the stats on the darklords themselves. As a DM I have been running Forgotten Realms campaigns for many years now and have become accustomed to incredibly powerful NPC characters that the PCs are in mortal fear of. No player is going to bum rush Elminster, even if he is wielding a +5 sword. Forgotten realms contains epic level characters using the WotC Epic Level handbook to full effect. The Secrets of the Dread Realms lists Azalin as an 18th level lich necromancer. Perhaps I am just jaded from my other campaigns, but isn't that a tad weak? Why didn't they bump up the power level of the darklords to reflect the new source material from WotC?

In any case, it was well worth the money I spent, but it could have been much better. The DM shield was actually quite handy as well, and definitely more appropriate for a Ravenloft campaign.

2 out of 5 stars Informative; But Better Can Be Obtained.......2002-03-12

I've had an ongoing Ravenloft Campaign now for over 10 years. We started with the old Realm of Terror boxed set for AD&D when it came out in 1990. When 3rd edition came out, we decided to look at the Ravenloft twist and what they had done with it. The core book was decent, yet it left out the darklords. Upon reading through the book, we found out that we would need to purchase this book to get information on those darklords.

We never did buy the book. After all the reviews we read it doesn't appear to be money well spent, more like money wasted. To hear that not all the darklords are even described is disheartening, as that was the only reason we looked to buy this book.

For those of you that are simply looking for information on the darklords, this product wouldn't be worth it. Not enough of them are described. In the transformation from 2nd ed. to 3rd ed., the basic lands all but stayed the same. Only one or two from the Realm of Terror failed to reappear in 3rd edition. And those that did make the transformation still have the same basic lords. There are a few new ones that "took over", and if they're depicted then it might be worth it. But on the whole, I'd advise something more.

If you can get your hands on the old Realm of Terror boxed set, do so. It has the description and personalities of the darklords. Of course, Realm of Terror is 2nd ed, so you'd have to do a little of your own work to transfer the darklords stats into 3rd edition playability.

And if you can get your hands on the 2nd ed module, "When Black Roses Bloom", you'd also find stats for Azreal in that adventure packet.

Just some alternatives, else you'd have to get this thin product.

      2 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing . . ........2002-02-26

I really liked the d20 Ravenloft book, but this one fell short. It only covers about half of the lords and includes a prestige class that should have been in the first book. Here, the class just takes up space that could have been better used with more darklords. Or, better yet, they could have made the book bigger to include more of the lords. I would have gladly paid more for a more complete work.

On a positive note, the updated stats for the lords are useful and necessary for a Ravenloft game. And we do get new artwork for Azalin and Azrael . . .

      3 out of 5 stars Unrational Expectations?.......2002-02-12

I must admit that perhaps I expected too much from this product. On the one hand, I really didn't think much about the advertised DM screen, but after looking it over I think that it was the major play aid (particularly the examples of typical dc's for skill checks). Maybe general combat modifiers would have been useful too.

As for the book? The book itself is pretty thin, considering what WotC is charging for the non-Core books I am not too surprised; I just expect more from White Wolf. I am, also, baffled as to why the witch hunter wasn't in the first Ravenloft book. I don't see what advantage the DM has over player's not knowing about this prestige class.

I guess what I was really looking forward to, though, was some more detail of particular realms. What I got was personal details on specific dread lords. Unfortunately the realms that struck my imagination most; Bluetspur and Forlorn were omitted. The fact that Forlorn is a core realm makes this doubly dismaying.

Most of the dread lords are interesting (particularly Richemulot, Nova Vaasa, and Dementlieu's), but I am interested in Ravenloft because I am, frankly, too lazy to create my own campaign world. Therefore I am much more interested in the details (organizations, perhaps realm specific prestige classes, etc.) of the specific realms and was left looking for the promised DM tricks to give me adventure ideas. (I don't, particularly, see my players going up against any dread lords for some time.)

If you, like me, are interested in D&D 3E because it seems a little more flexible and realistic than the original D&D (Yeah, I know its a fantasy game) but not the massive dice roling fest that is GURPS and you are intrigued by the ravenloft setting then this book will probably come in handy, eventually. But if you have all the old 2nd ed. D&D stuff you might be happier just translating it into 3E terms. Actually, possibly the best thing is to bypass this and get Denizen's in March and make up your own Dread Lords.

      4 out of 5 stars A joy for DMs, off-limits for players.......2002-02-03

First things first: this is a book designed for use by the DM, atleast for the most part. In the beginning of the book there's a couple of pages detailing a new Ravenloft-specific prestige class called the 'witch-hunter'. A fun to play class, especially for people who enjoy role-playing rather than roll-playing.

The rest of the book describes a great variety of villains from various domains. The villains (mostly 'Darklords') are described in great detail: stats, background, current sketch, etc. are all covered. Special rules are also presented, such as how a 'Talon' (an elite troop of Vlad Drakov) differs from the ordinary soldier, and how a vampire can feed without exhausting his 'cattle'. The background stories are nicely done, and are very likely easy to follow even for DMs new to the Ravenloft setting.

A DM screen comes with this book, which is quite obviously a very handy tool. Typically for a setting which focuses more on character interaction than on combat, two of the four panels of this screen present easy to look up DCs for all skills. Ever wonder what the PC must roll to pull a nasty splinter without causing more damage? Or how difficult it is to convince a vampire to let you go? With this screen it's all right in front of you.

So why only four stars? Well, basically, there are some rather inexplicable typos...but these can be forgiven. What is a bit painful is the fact that the progression table for the witch-hunter prestige class is not complete. Due to a miss during layout, half of the table was cut. Not much of a problem if you have access to internet, really, as you can download the complete table at the sword & sorcery website (...).

Besides this small flaw, it is worth the cash.

As a screen should be this gives the basic charts necessary to keep an adventure going. And as with the rest of 3rd edition, the artwork is nice and the overall presentation of this package handled professionally.

Simply get it if you are going to run an adventure.
