Dragonlance book.......2007-08-23
My son loves these books so as he read it in a couple of days must be good.
Raistlin Chronicles.......2006-08-29
If you are intrigued by Raistlin and want to know his detailed story, starting at age 6, this book, along with Book 1, are the books to get. All of the questions I had about him, and even some I didn't know I had, were explained.
The Brothers march on.......2006-07-27
This is the one series of books, that I never tire of. If a book has to do with Raistlin, the mage, or anyone related, I have read or ordered that book and I have never been dissapinted. The story tells well through all the continuing sagas. Thank you Margaret Weis and thank you Tracy Hickman. You are the epitamy of style, magic and entertainment.

Enigmatic.......2005-11-27
Continuing on the Enigmatic character Raistlin, this book goes into how Raistlin and Cameron learn how to fight together, and their beginings as adventuers. If you enjoy D&D, Wizards, and campaigning, you'll enjoy this quick read!
Great book, soulforge was much better.......2005-01-27
I'm a huge raistlin fan, which is why I think this isn't as good as the soulforge book. I didn't like as much how it focused too much on Kitiara, I mostly wanted to hear about the twins, but I guess that's what the legends are there for, right? Anyways, I loved the book still, but only about half of it, I happen to despise kitiara. I prefer Hickman and Weis a lot more, because Hickman depends on less sex and violence to sell his books. He's a plot kinda guy, and Perrin seemed to have one too many "the look of the twilight on her full breasts" scenes. For the fact that it leads more into the twin's lives makes it a must-have for all dragonlance fans, and even dabblers. Peace out.

Customer Reviews:
Brothers In Arms.......2007-09-19
"People were starting to gather around, but I blocked them out. Huero was going to wake up. He had to."
This is one of the most exciting moments of the book Brothers In Arms. This book is about two brothers who live in a bad neighborhood. Huero, the youngest brother, counts on his big brother Martin (his hero). Then, a tragedy occurs. What happened to Huero? Martin wants revenge.
Martin has to choose a path...stay in the past or think about his future. Which path will he choose?
One of the people Martin meets in his new path is Vicky. Vicky, turns out to be a beautiful and wonderful girl. Vicky is Martin's friend. She is a great student at Bluford High School. Mr. Mitchell the annoying teacher who gets in everybody's business.
One of the most exciting parts of Brothers In Arms, is when Martin faces one of his friends. They got in an argument. Another quote of the book that I thought it was interesting is "My brother's death wasn't enough for you, huh? Now you want me too."
Brothers In Arms taught me a lesson. That you should never run from your past, that you should face it. Also that revenge is just a waste of life and opportunities, so "don't waste it on something worthless."

Brother's in Arm's By Pual Langan & Ben Alirez.......2006-10-27
My book is about a boy named Martin Luna that's trapped in a world that he really doesn't like. His little brother called Huero died by a buulet to the back of his head. The most part i like about the book is when him and his friend's seek revenge on his little brother's killer. To make matter's worse his mom (i really don't know her name) is moving far far away from all the madness because she doesn't want to lose a nother son. Well as you can see when he moved away from his old house his mom inrolled him in a school called Blufford High.At first he really didn't wan't to go to that school but he started meet alot of people now he's starting to like it.He hasn't seen his brother's killer yet but he is still looking for him. Download Description
A powerful wartime saga in the bestselling tradition of Flags of Our Fathers, Brothers in Arms recounts the extraordinary story of the 761st "Black Panthers," the first all-black armored unit to see combat in World War II.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar first learned about the battalion from family friend Leonard "Smitty" Smith, a veteran of the battalion. Working with acclaimed writer Anthony Walton, Abdul-Jabbar interviewed the surviving members of the battalion and their descendants to weave together a page-turning narrative based on their memories and stories, from basic training through the horrors on the battlefield to their postwar experiences in a racially divided America.
Trained essentially as a public relations gesture to maintain the support of the black community for the war, the battalion was never intended to see battle. In fact, General Patton originally opposed their deployment, claiming African Americans couldn't think quickly enough to operate tanks in combat conditions. But the Allies were so desperate for trained tank personnel in the summer of 1944, following heavy casualties in the fields of France, that the battalion was called up.
While most combat troops fought on the front for a week or two before being rotated back, the men of the 761st served for more than six months, fighting heroically under Patton's Third Army at the Battle of the Bulge and in the Allies' final drive across France and Germany. Despite a casualty rate that approached 50 percent and an extreme shortage of personnel and equipment, the 761st would ultimately help liberate some thirty towns and villages, as well as the Gunskirchen Lager concentration camp.
The racism that shadowed them during the war and the prejudice they faced upon their return home is an indelible part of their story. What shines through most of all, however, are the lasting bonds that united them as soldiers and brothers, the bravery they exhibited on the battlefield, and the quiet dignity and patriotism that defined their lives.
Customer Reviews:
great WW II book.......2007-08-13
I really did like this book and found it to be very well done; I couldn't put it down. Kareem abdul-jabbar did a great job of tying the history of the unit into is his life (one of the main characters was friends with his father). It wasn't only intresting because of the whole Black Soldiers in WW II subject area, but was also a great read concerning WW II tankers in general (not just black tankers). Mr. Abdul did an outstanding job and I would recommend this book to anyone.
Very Moving.......2006-07-07
Not knowing where to start, let me say this was a very moving book. It was very dishartening to hear how American Soldiers were mistreated by fellow Soldiers and the American public. It really speaks to their character that they were willing to fight for a country that did not recognize them as first class citzens. Before reading this book, I had no idea that there were all Black tank units. Even when reading other books about some of the battles that the 761st fought in, I never incountered mention of the 761st or that there were even all Black units fighting in the same battle. This book was a real eye opener.
I am not a historian or even a history enthusiast, so I was unaware of the errors that were in the book. Nevertheless, I feel that the story is about the Soldiers of the 761st, and that the book is not meant to be a treatise on WWII. This is just my opinion, so if you are someone who cares about the errors, then you will need to read this book with a grain of salt.
Brothers in Arms, Aptly Subtitled "Forgotten Heroes" - African-American Tankers Honored in Prose.......2006-03-01
Despite being quite intrigued by the story of the 761st Tank Battalion this reviewer was initially quite leery about picking up this book, for the same reasons articulated by Lt. Col. Mark Reardon in his review of Brothers in Arms - why would we expect a historical work developed by a former pro-basketball player to be of particular value beyond a novelty? However, Reardon gave Brothers in Arms a quite positive review and thus this reviewer decided the time commitment to read it was justified. Having said all that this reviewer found Brothers in Arms a compelling, easy and informative read.
It is worth mentioning that Abdul-Jabbar's tale of the 761st is not the first or only documentation of this storied battalion; previously published accounts include T.W. Anderson's "Come Out Fighting" (1979) and J. Wilson Jr.'s "The 761st 'Black Panther' Tank Battalion in World War II (1999). Yet, Abdul-Jabbar's account is a well-written and engaging story, targeted to a wide audience. The prose set forth by Abdul-Jabbar starts with a brief description of why the author chose to take on such and project and why the reader should be engaged and interested. Abdul-Jabbar then introduces the three gentlemen who anchor the story of the 761st as he tells it, the pre-war lives of these men and what led them to volunteer for the Tank Corps. Within this section of the book and the next section dealing with the training of the 761st, Abdul-Jabbar provides considerable insight into the racial discrimination that these American heroes suffered in 1940's American culture, including the US Army - which at the time was still a quite segregrated institution, as was American culture in general. These discussion points (which are also brought out in subsequent sections of the book) are the real selling points for this book - ALL Americans should read this book for this contrast in sacrifice of the men of the 761st to the respect and honor they received for their sacrifices.
The major portion of the prose is dedicated to discussion of the combat situations in which the 761st found themselves. The 761st was one of several independent Tank Battalions that was not permanently assigned to any Division, but rather attached to various units, Armored or Infantry, as needed. Thus the 761st functioned to large extent as a 'fire brigade' to deal with recalcitrant combat zones or details. While no clear evidence exists to suggest that this was an overt discriminatory act of the US Army to sacrifice African-American versus white troops is difficult situations, Abdul-Jabbar makes a compelling case that this could have in fact been true. The combat history of the 761st is indeed impressive both for its scope of action and depth of nearly impossible situations into which they were placed by rear command decisions. Despite the adversities facing them the men of the 761st were generally successful in their assigned tasks.
The last section of the book deals with what happened to the men of the 761st from V-E day onwards. While these stories are themselves fascinating, it is the injustice and prejudice these American heroes suffered after the combat was over that really capture the readers attention. In fact, it took decades for African-American soldiers who carried arms in the Second World War to be recognized for their acts of heroism. Abdul-Jabbar does a fair honest tribute to these men in his writings.
So how well done is the military history in Brothers in Arms? OK but not perfect; some errors are simply too silly to believe. Two examples illustrate this perfectly: First, in multiple places Abdul-Jabbar refers to the Tactical Air Command as the Air Tactical Command. Second, on p. 240 the following statement is made: "Hitler's propaganda minister, Hermann Goering, had a castle on a high bluff just beyond Neuhaus." Goering did in fact own a castle at Neuhaus [Burg Veldenstein, now a hotel] that was given to him by the widow of previous owner, Dr. Hermann Von Epenstein, Joseph Goebbles, not Goering, was propaganda.
Problems aside, Brothers in Arms represents a fun, entertaining and educational read, not perfect in historical content but sound enough to merit a look by serious and casual history buffs. 4 stars.
Not worth it. .......2005-03-18
"Brothers In Arms" by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anthony Walton. Subtitled "The Epic Story Of The 761st Tank Battalion, WWII's Forgotten Heroes". Broadway books, New York, 2004.
Studying History gives you exposure to the overall events of World War II, and the general ebb and flow of the European Theater of Operations, such as which unit attacked which enemy unit and the results. After an MA in History, I am always seeking more interesting personal accounts, i.e. personal reminiscences, describing what really happened. This book, "Brothers In Arms", appeared to be just that: the personal memoirs of black soldiers in a tank battalion in the EOT, with all those daily minimal details, woven into a real and personal story of the men who served. Even more interesting, these soldiers were black.
Unfortunately, however, the book did not live up to its promise. The stories about the individuals involved, with the possible exception of Leonard "Smitty" Smith, did not, in my humble opinion, bring those individuals alive. Even the nice repetition , (but disrupting to the continuity of the book), of Baseball's Jackie Robinson's wartime experiences were not truly a personal remembrance.
Then there are the unnecessary mistakes. As other reviewers have mentioned the worst gaffe, the German word for panther, is "Panther" and "Panzer" means, basically, armor or tanks. See page 47. The Luftwaffe's rotund Hermann Goering is probably rotating rapidly in his grave since this book identifies him as the skinny Nazi propaganda minister. On page 45, the authors state that in the Pacific theater, in 1942, "American and Japanese forces were at a stalemate". Sorry! The Battle of Midway, June 1942, was the turning point and it was downhill for Japan after that. The "stalemate" characterization was wrong. On page 70, the authors have General George S. Patton being born in 1895; he was born in 1885. Just as another example, the book states that the German "Teller" Anti-Tank mines had about one pound of explosive in them. I could not understand why a "Teller" mine should threaten a Sherman tank, so I went on the Web. There I found that the early models of the German Teller mines had about 23 pounds, or about ten kilograms, of explosive. I could see that this concentrated explosive force could do damage to some parts of the Sherman. My complaint is the book's authors let this poundage gaffe go into print.
So , for the personal memoirs, I gave four stars. For the mistakes , (too many!) and evident lack of knowledge about the History of the EOT, I gave zero stars. Average: two stars.
Mistakes Mistakes Mistakes.......2005-02-23
This book is filled with interesting stories. It is also filled with many, many unforgiveable mistakes. Previous reviews have pointed out the mistake of Panzer means panther in German...come on! But towards the end of the book it refers to Hermann Goering as Hitler's propaganda minister. Wow, where was the editor on that one. I think Joseph Goebbels would have something to say about that. And if Goering was hard at work on propaganda, who was running the Luftwaffe? It moves on to talk about Hitler's suicide by poison in the Bunker. Except that Hitler shot himself in the temple, prefering a soldiers death. Yes Hitler did have a poison pill in his mouth, but that was only as backup in case the shot was not fatal. The book is filled with stuff like this.
I started reading this book with great excitement because the subject matter is fascinating and I have not heard about the 761st Battalion. I was hoping this book would be breaking new ground. But instead I find myself NOT trusting any of the information in this book since they obviously don't even know who Hermann Goering was.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and 761st Battalion should get an apology from coauther Anthony Walton and the Editor of this book.

After the audacious prison camp escapade described in Borders of Infinity, Miles is on the run from the Cetagandans, who aren't about to take that kind of thing lying down. The worst of it is, Miles and his friends are starting to see double, and it takes a while to find out who is responsible.
Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Cousin clone kill.
Miles has problems on most fronts. The Cetagandans are none too happy with his escapades. His conservative opposition is none to happy with his escapades. He has a clone brother that wants to kill him. As far as I remember, I think he had enough clean undies and socks to go around though.
A spot of survival and reconciliation is in order.
Another excellent book in the Vorkosigan series.......2007-05-07
You can always count on one of Bujold's Vorkosigan books to be well-written, carefully plotted, and with interesting characters. This is no exception. Here, Miles has emerged from a major coup, liberating a prisoner-of-war camp, but comes to Earth for repairs for his mercenary fleet (which is actually being subsized by Barrajar, but that's not something we talk about). Of course, nothing ends up routine: he has enemies who track him down, and amazingly enough, replace him with a clone. Miles must deal with the situation while at the same time cope with his feelings for his "brother," who shouldn't suffer for the situation he's been forced into. As usual, Miles bends the rules, uses some brilliant tactics, has a suitable amount of angst, and comes out on top. You can always count on Bujold.
Miles is two men in one or is that 3 ?.......2005-10-07
Admiral Naismith has just come into Earth orbit with ships that need refitting, injured and dead crew that need medical care, and the Cetagandan hit squads hopefully lost behind. The Dendarii need their pay for the horrendously expensive jail break they just performed (See Borders of Infinity). He needs money and to check in with the Barrayaran Embassy.
The usual benign beginning turns into intrigue when the Embassy Security doesn't even know Naismith is owed money, his calls for money to his usual sources are unanswered, he's confined to quarters, the Dendarii are at loose ends and getting in trouble, these a plot afoot to kidnap him, a report thinks Naismith and Vorkosigan are the same person, and Ivan is working at the Embassy.
In this book we get an introduction to Galeni and to Lord Mark. There is a lot going on in this book. There's not only the story of the book but much of the background and history that will feature in the next several books is laid in this one.
If your looking for a book to take your mind of your life for a few hours--this is it. There's action, intrigue, plot twists, and the usual wit and humor. At least I know I wouldn't mind a living fur blanket that purrs providing I wasn't allergic to it.
Read and enjoy.
A worthwhile read, but starting to wane........2005-05-10
Lieutenant Vorkosigan/Admiral Naismith or as we more commonly think of him, Miles, arrives with his Dendarii Mercenary fleet at Earth, thinking he can combine some ship refitting with some personal site seeing. Little does he realize that between Cetagandan interest and rebel Komarran intrigue, rest and relaxation is the last thing that will be on his itinerary. Fortunately for Miles he has sharp wits to rely on, though in this case, he may have his sharp wits to contend with too!
Perhaps its just me, but this Miles adventure, though still well told and fun, came across as almost a parody of itself. Maybe the author decided to poke some fun at her own adventurer, but where as in the past she mixed serious issues with Miles' insanity, here the family vs. cause conflict(s) seem under-realized and the story in general felt more cliché or rote.
Vorkosigan series just keeps getting better.......2005-04-16
Courage, honor, psychology, truthfulness, patriotism, and intrigue. Romance, action, divided loyalties, manipulaton, suspicion, and mistaken identities. Grudge holding, family, adventure, living fur blankets, blackmail, and money. Fighting, showdowns, betrayal, plotting, and sex. And a whole lot more. "Brothers in Arms", the fifth novel, chronologically, in the life story of Miles Vorkosigan, is an explosion, packing in so much pure stuff into an utterly insane yet compulsively logical plot that it will make your head spin.
Shortly after pulling off the amazing prison break in "Borders of Infinity", the Dendarii mercenaries arrive at Earth with vengeful Cetagandans in hot pursuit. They need time for rest, repose, and repairs. Miles meets up with the Barrayaran embassy, but (surprise, surprise) problems develop. He tries to get an emergency payment from the emperor, but the money fails to arrive. Has he been duped? Is the current ambassador trying to filch the money? Is one of Miles' many enemies interrupting the transfer?
While he rushes to solve the mystery, more problems develop. Rogue mercenaries start a firefight in a London liquor shop. An Earth reporter is closing in on the secret of his true identity. An assassination attempt forces him into hiding. Then, out of nowhere comes a plot twist so huge it will dazzle you. And then another one. And then another after that. And more and more. I personally am surprised that one person could manage to craft a book like this without going insane. but Bujold has always been a woman of many talents. Here, on top juggling all the competing avenues of intrigue and suspense, she also manages to work in an amazingly detailed and sympathetic look at Miles' personal entanglements.
We've all heard this series referred to as the greatest space opera ever written. When you read "Brothers in Arms", you'll realize that the earlier books in the series are actually just setup for this and later volumes. Considering that the earlier books won three Hugos, I think that's pretty telling.

This dual biography of the brothers who were top aides to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson is an outstanding study of the mindset that allowed the United States to become slowly ensnared in the Vietnam War. Both McGeorge Bundy, a national security advisor, and William Bundy, a senior official at the Pentagon and State Department, were liberal anti-Communists trying to balance American interests in Southeast Asia between what they considered the dangerous extremes of both Left and Right. They came under enormous criticism for their roles, but author Kai Bird argues that newly declassified documents "show that the Bundys and other decision-makers registered deep doubts about the American enterprise in Vietnam and did so far earlier than most historians had thought." This hardly exonerates them, in Bird's view: "They knew how badly the war was going as early as 1964-65, yet they found a way to persist in folly." Their tale didn't end in the 1960s. McGeorge Bundy, for instance, went on to head the Ford Foundation for 13 years, where he played an enormously important role in shaping modern liberalism. Bird, a Guggenheim Fellow and contributing editor to The Nation, tells the Bundys' story with great clarity and sound judgment; The Color of Truth is a surprisingly absorbing book. --John Miller
Book Description
"Grey is the color of truth."
So observed Mac Bundy in defending America's intervention in Vietnam. Kai Bird brilliantly captures this ambiguity in his revelatory look at Bundy and his brother William, two of the most influential policymakers of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. It is a portrait of fiercely patriotic, brilliant and brazenly self-confident men who directed a steady escalation of a war they did not believe could be won. Bird draws on seven years of research, nearly one hundred interviews, and scores of still-classified top secret documents in a masterful reevaluation of America's actions throughout the Cold War and Vietnam.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely slanted against JFK and towards the Bundys.......2007-06-12
According to this book everything President Kennedy did was sinister and hawk-like and everything the Bundy boys did was well intentioned and high-minded. It's so blatantly slanted it's disgusting.
In addition, it doesn't even address major questions about the behavior of McGeorge Bundy. For example it mentions that the night before the Bay of Pigs invasion Bundy called Richard Bissell of the CIA and canceled the planned dawn airstrikes that JFK had authorized. JFK did not authorize the cancellation of the airstrikes; Bundy just did it on his own. WHY? Kai Bird never explains why, and never even expresses curiosity. This is a glaring omission in a book supposedly showing what made the Bundy boys tick.
But as another reviewer noted, Kai Bird writes for The Nation, the faux "left"/establishment left publication. So that makes it clear why an author of theirs would try to paint the Bundys as "liberal" and JFK as a hawk, which is exactly backwards.
I gave it a star because the book still has some interesting history and insights.
Engaging Dual Biography.......2006-09-15
Without hesitation I've put this book on my short list of recommendations for anyone who wants to learn more about the Vietnam War. Not at the top simply because it assumes some prior knowledge about many of the players involved and the historical events described but it should be included, (I think), with books by Halberstam, Sheehan, etc. Why? The Bundy brothers were at the center of most if not all the policy and military decisions concerning Vietnam made during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations - McGeorge as Special Assistant to the President on National Security Affairs to both presidents and William working under McNamara, (Defense) and then Dean Rusk, (State). This book/author does an excellent job of putting these decisions in the context of the Bundy brothers' background, upbringing, education, intellect, loyalty and sense of duty, i.e. all the things a biography should do. Will the reader agree with all the decisions the Bundys made? ...Of course not. In fact one may disagree with every decision each or both of them did make but this book gives the reader an appreciation or at least an understanding as to how and why they came about. (As an aside, most of the questions/doubts concerning Vietnam policy made in hindsight, were raised contemporaneously by one or both of the Bundys -just another piece to this overly complex puzzle) Regarding the book's perspective/objectivity, I have no complaints and found the author admirably evenhanded - Although there are some anecdotes concerning peripheral individuals, (i.e. Henry Kissinger), which do not show them in the most positive light and may even raise a smirk from the reader. Finally although this review has centered on the Bundys and Vietnam this book chronicles much more, both before and after the Vietnam War - Henry Stimson, military service, the CIA, McCarthyism and the Cold War, Harvard and Yale, Cuba, the Ford Foundation - but in the interest of brevity I hope I've made my point.
Very Bad Wizards.......2001-11-03
Like nothing else available, Kai Bird's THE COLOR OF TRUTH demystifies liberal pragmatic centrist (the Bundy brothers were EXTREMELY difficult to categorize/pin, politically) contributions to a disastrous post-WWII U.S. foreign policy drift that continues to this day. It does re-cover best/brightest territory, but in the nicest sense of recovery, with graceful focus on key players plus perspective & freedom-of-information access impossible for Halberstam. A case of perfect historian timing? Primary sources still alive/available but no longer needing/wishing to defend/protect/fib too heavily? Bird is a contributing editor for The Nation & dedicates the book, partly, to his parents, lifelong worried opponents of brutal wars in the Middle East, but has no axe to grind, is familiar with context by virtue of previous work on John J. McCloy, appropriately begins with Henry Stimson & Harvey Bundy, father of a couple of perhaps frighteningly blessed sons.
William & McGeorge Bundy grew into decent bright academics who would indirectly destroy millions of humans, plus their own reputations, by doing exactly what bright decent academics get paid do, usually fairly harmlessly. In order to operate in the professional expert marketplace, one must learn to develop/defend theses. Neither of the brothers was a certified official Dr. Henry VIP (an easter egg the size of the Ritz is noted at the bottom of p. 407 of the hardcover) dignitary, but certain allowances can/will be made for the off-the-charts smartly impatient. These guys were good, even superb, at thesis concoction/defense. Also connected well past needing paper proof? Regardless, thesis defense can get out of hand, seriously, if/when thesis basis information turns out to be inaccurate/skewed or even flatly atrociously wrong. What can a responsible expert do? Admit erroneous basis? Revise thesis? Even, if one has accepted a government job, reverse policy? Perhaps. But this can feel mighty embarrassing, or swampy/waffling/kinetic, especially if U.S. troops have already died under prevailing false thesis conditions & elections impend? So, if one is an unusually gifted aristomandarin character, as both William &, probably even moreso, Mac were, all sorts of spinning options are open? After all, one is a professional? Execute the assignment? Indeed.
It took many to generate bloody quagmire in Vietnam. The Bundy brothers were merely essential state-of-the-art instruments (filtering network managers, the postmodern equivalent of loyal trusted Machiavellian courtiers?) humbly serving two Democratic presidents who failed to get a sane/sage grip on something set in motion by congenial Ike. McGeorge Bundy departed in 1966, just as the unreconstructed Texan in LBJ began to explode. Bill left in 1969, before the incoming Nixon plus Dick's own academic favorite, vastly less decent than either Bundy, cranked Vietnam up/down into criminally pointless/cynical brutality, or peace with honor. Bill Bundy eventually wondered, in writing, about the final five years of the futile war he had contributed to failing to curtail.
Bird's chapter on the JFK government adventurism regarding Cuba, which set a tone, is especially valuable, as is his fairly relentless harping on the bizarrely spooky nature/bias of the American electorate during the middle years of the cool quasi-war with the Evil Empire. The Bundy brothers were NOT very bad men, as gentle reader learns as Bird tells of McGeorge at the Ford Foundation or William writing up himself (plus later even more pragmatic others) for arrogant carelessness. But they WERE very bad wizards, which can/does happen when professional experts overestimate their [genius] rights/capabilities, still. Even now? Might be safer to inform/trust our own judgements, sometimes?
Fingering the Culprits.......2001-07-23
THE COLOR OF TRUTH: MCGEORGE BUNDY AND WILLIAM BUNDY, BROTHERS IN ARMS: A BIOGRAPHY is essential reading for anyone trying to understand American foreign policy in the twentieth century. This book is well-researched and full of previously-undisclosed information. It also provides two portraits of what "establishment liberalism" was, how it developed, and its consequences. In the process, some of the most fascinating moments in American history are illuminated, most of the time unfavorably.
From their respective military careers in WWII to their numerous positions in academia, government, and the non-profit sector, these two brothers were at the center of a huge web of personal and professional contacts in the American establishment. They were in many ways, the best, but also very flawed. This biography reveals those flaws, and the consequences of their failures.
This book is very dense, especially during the sections dealing with the question of Vietnam, and an acquaintance with the brothers' own corpus of work is helpful and increases the potency of the book's analytical edge. It should be required reading for anyone interested in government policy, because it reveals how decisions are made, and how human beings think.
A must read for any student of Vietnam or foreign affairs..........2000-08-21
I happened upon this book in a bookstore in New York. I'm not going to say it changed my life: it would take a lot for a biography to do that. But for what it is: a biography of two men who were raised to hold the reins of power, than did so in one of this countries most difficult periods, the book is balanced, insightful, and enlightening.
I was a bit worried going into the book that Bird, a frequent contributer to the Nation, would perform an unbalanced hatchet-job on these two men-- who must of course be seen with their redeeming qualities. And he does. This is a well-researched, well-put together book. It is a must read for anyone interested in Vietnam, the Kennedy Administration, or foreign affairs in general.

Book Description
DAYS OF BATTLE, NIGHTS OF PASSION
A proud and fearless warrior, Kieran Broderick was half-Irish, yet bound to fight for the English crown. So when King Henry decreed that he take an Irish wife to quell rebellion there, he reluctantly agreed. Newly dubbed the earl of Kildare, Kieran travels to Langmore Castle, seat of the lawless O'Shea family, to choose a bride. Yet when he picks Maeve O'Shea, a fetching less who seems sweetly submissive, he finds himself facing the most daunting battle of all. For Maeve is not biddable in the least, and she refuses to allow him into her bed. Still, Kieran is determined to conquer the rebellious beauty--body and soul. But first, he must scale the battlements around his lady's heart.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Medieval Romance.......2001-06-03
Shelley Bradley does a commendable job of portraying Kieran and Maeve's disparate viewpoints and why they both feel so strongly about their belief systems. Kieran is sworn to the English king in an age when a man's word is his very honor, while Maeve detests English tyranny because of the rape and plundering that has gone hand-in-hand with it. I've read other romances where the author employs the "born to be enemies" scenario, but this is the first one I've read where the author actually pulls it off without making the heroine come across as an exasperating shrew.
Ordinarily I prefer romances where the hero and heroine both realize their feelings for the other early on and spend the remainder of the book cementing those feelings in one form or another. Such a plot device, however, would feel too unrealistic in His Rebel Bride and Bradley is wise not to use it. Yes, the hero and heroine are mutually attracted to each other from the beginning, but their feelings of genuine attachment happen in baby steps throughout the novel and are borne of thoughtful gestures here and kind actions there. Because of that fact, Kieran and Maeve's romance is a convincing one.
Aside from the well-scripted romance, what brings this novel into 5 star status for me is the complexity of the protagonists themselves. On the surface Kieran seems to be nothing more than a charming ladies man with a grin that kills, but underneath all of his bluster lies a loyal, steadfast man who has experienced much emotional neglect and abuse in his childhood and therefore doesn't really think he'll ever find somebody capable of loving him for himself.
On the surface Maeve is a woman who appears to be stoic and unemotional, but underneath the determined face she wears for everyone is a tenderhearted woman who has grown weary of the bloodshed that has been the direct result of England and Ireland's clash of wills. She is also a woman who is being torn apart, forced to choose between the country and kin she has always known and loved and the husband she is growing increasingly adoring of.
His Rebel Bride is not perfect. There is a plot device used toward the end that seems a trifle too convenient, but it's not so outlandish as to distract from the novel as a whole. Viewed in its entirety, Shelley Bradley has taken a subject matter that is very difficult to convincingly work with and crafted it into a winning novel. Because of all the odds and obstacles the couple must face before finding their happily ever-after, Kieran and Maeve's love story is a powerful one and one that will stay with you long after you close the book.
An amazing story.......2001-04-12
Set in 1484. King Henry needed someone in the Pale to keep peace. A rebellion was forming in Ireland and word had finally arrived that the two young princes, Edward and Richard, were dead. The King needed someone loyal to England to be Lord of Langmore Castle. Thus, someone would have to wed one of the four O'Shea women that lived in the castle. However, the Statute of Kilkenney prohibits the English from marrying the Irish.
Kieran Broderick was half English and half Irish. Being such and one of Henry's best warriors, he was made Earl of Kildare and sent to Langmore Castle. Kieran hated his Irish heredity and loathed the thought of a wife. Of the four, he chose Maeve O'Shea, even though she was betrothed. In fact, her betrothed, Quaid, was currently in a dungeon for killing two Englishmen. Only the youngest sister, Brighid, would even consider Kieran as a husband, but she was too young. The biggest problem was the brother, Flynn, who often disappeared to side with the rebellion.
Maeve vowed to hate Kieran. She wanted freedom for Ireland, but not at the cost of lives. Kieran loved battle. That was obvious. Yet she saw him help her sisters when he did not have to. Slowly, Kieran and Maeve would learn about each other. But there were so many obstacles.
**** An amazing story! The author was able to show what Ireland faced and the awful feeling of loved ones against loved ones! Recommended! ****
The warrior with a heart -- highly recommended.......2001-04-01
Kieran Broderick has known little but warring and fighting all of his life, taking satisfaction in life through his fits, his weapons, and in his bed. He plans to leave England for Spain where he will serve as a mercenary, until the King changes his plans. He tends to ignore court ritual and bed every pretty wench who looks his way, which has earned him the King's displeasure. He has therefore been made the earl of Kildare and King Henry decrees he must go to Ireland. He is half-English and half-Irish; consequently exempt from the law forbidding the English to marry the Irish. He's take possession of Langmore Castle, the home of the O'Shea family. The O'Sheas are a rebellious lot, and bear watching. Kieran is ordered to suppress the rebellion, enforce the peace, organize the army, and marry and breed one of the four O'Shea sisters.
Recognizing Kieran for the rogue that he is, Maeve would like to dismiss Kieran out of hand for being English and a warrior. She considers him both primal and primitive. His kisses are like spiced mead, and he tastes like pure temptation. Betrothed to another, she's shocked he chooses to marry her, despite the fact she's not a virgin. Further, she had thought Kieran, who loves teasing and has a bloodthirsty nature, would consider the rape of women part of the spoils of war. So when he proves his heart by finishing a cradle for her sister, because the father is dead, and comforting another sister who was raped, Maeve finds herself torn between his warrior nature and his kindness.
People listen to Maeve and respect her word. She refuses to present herself as challenging. Kieran would enjoy nothing more than conquering her. But she wants no part of him, only peace. Indeed, she only married him for the hope of peace in Ireland. As part of the rebellion, she must her role as scribe and messenger hidden at all cost. As Kieran comes to their chambers, Maeve desires him even as she believes that her body has betrayed her. To fight her attraction for him, she asks that he wait a fortnight before they share a bed, to give her time to grow used to their sudden marriage. During this time she must spend an hour alone with him each evening, and he will only touch her with one hand and his mouth.
Shelley Bradley weaves a fascinating tale of desire and passion. Maeve quickly learns what a tease a single hand and a mouth can provide! These spirited and wonderfully believable characters provide a marvelous read. THE REBEL BRIDE's sensual love story stirs the senses and the emotions. Highly recommended.
A lusty, intriguing romance from a wonderful writer.......2001-03-06
Kieran Broderick was one of the fiercest warriors in King Henry's realm. Half Irish, half English, and well known for his deadly skills and lustful passions, Kieran was astonished to find out his next assignment for the English throne was perhaps the tamest he ever received. He must travel back to Ireland, take over as Lord of the Pale, and take an Irish miss for his wife. But not just any Irish lass, one of the ladies of the lawless O'Shea family. Kieran girds himself up for an unpleasant adventure, one that soon turns into an quest of romance and pleasure as he picks for his wife the beautiful but feisty Maeve O'Shea. Could he have fallen in love with the enemy?
Maeve O'Shea was loyal to her country, but even more loyal to her family. When forced to wed Kieran, the new English Lord of her home, she goes about it steadfastly and resolved. However, the quick grin of her new master turns her head like no other ever has, even her betrothed but imprisoned fiancé. Soon Miss Maeve finds herself questioning her sanity as passion ignites her heart. As she observes her husband's kindness and gentle ways with her sisters and family, as well as his ferociousness and determination to protect her home, Maeve soon surrenders her heart to the enemy, her husband, her love.
In the final installment of her thrilling series "Brothers In Arms," historic romance author Shelley Bradley wraps up her successful trilogy with the most intriguing of the three warrior knights, the Irish rogue Kieran, and his quest for true love. "His Rebel Bride" has to be the most intriguing of the series, featuring the mysterious Irish lad and his buddies Aric and Drake. Mixing in just the right amount of good-natured humor with sensual passion, Bradley concludes this series on a high note. All three men find the women that match them in love, and you just know the couples go on to lead eventful lives. It would be fun down the road to visit the threesome's children and see how they turned out! Watch for Shelley Bradley to continue to rise as one of the most accomplished new writers in the romance industry. She should have lots of good things to offer for a long, long time.
a fufilling ending to the saga!.......2001-02-15
Kieran Broderick, whom is half Irish, must travel to Ireland to take an Irish wife and bring a stop to the rebellion of the people. He is not pleased with the King's order but ever faithful to the English crown, he reluctantly agrees. Of the four O'Shea sisters, Maeve is the one that catches Kieran's eye but the Irish beauty is against what he stands for and vows not to submit her body or her heart to this handsome rogue.
Kieran and Maeve's story is a very satisfying conclusion to Ms Bradley's medieval trilogy which left me quite fulfilled. With lots of action but most importantly tender moments that I believe readers look for in a romance story. And the love scenes were very nice too! Also hopefully there will be more stories from generations to come. As someone that had never read medievals before reading this trilogy, this author proved to me how great a romance story can be told in this time era. Five hearts all the way around....I loved it!

Book Description
At the Torture Rehabilitation Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the best psychiatrists in the world try to put back together human beings destroyed by the tyrants of the world. Lost in the maze of one patient's shattered mind is a terrible secret, so terrible that even in his shattered state he cannot be allowed to live. The Twins are young, blond, nubile women---and the most deadly team of assassins in the world. Their first attempt at killing the patient succeeds only in killing a double, and they are almost killed by two unlikely bystanders: ex-military special operator Dale Miller (No Other Option) and former CIA operator Charley Payne (Warrior in the Shadows).Miller and Payne are recruited by the CIA to protect the patient. And a clandestine game of cat and mouse between the assassins and the protectors leads to Amsterdam, where the money man behind the Twins' operations has set up base, and to a bloody showdown in Athens, where Dale Miller nearly loses his life. It's left to Charley Payne to discover the secret locked deep in the subconscious of the patient's shattered mind and hunt one deadly man through the streets of Washington, D.C., and stop him before he can unleash an event that could kill millions.Marcus Wynne took you on a thrill ride in his first book, No Other Option, when a special ops team had to hunt down one of its own. In Warrior in the Shadows, Payne pursued a psychopathic killer who drew his strength from cannibalism and black magic. Brothers in Arms unites the heroes from his previous books in a global battle to face down a threat to the United States of America.
Customer Reviews:
Gritty,real-life. .......2006-03-16
Book is throughly fascinating and gripping. It deals with the inner workings and thought process of why special operatives are
so effective and deadly.
Brothers in Arms Novel.......2005-09-17
Good Book. A little weak in some action on the "Killers from Holland". I'd like to see more of them in the future. But, overall I enjoyed the book and would buy the next one without hesitation.
Couldn't Put It Down.......2005-01-17
I've read Marcus Wynne's other two novels which I enjoyed. But,this seemed to me to be the best page turner. I very much enjoyed his development of the characters of the two beautiful female assassins and even that of the lonely young Saudi terrorist who had been designated to unleash the smallpox virus in the U.S. I have read several other novels recently that really bogged down. So this was truly delightful.
Another Winner From Wynne!.......2004-09-02
This is the third book that Marcus Wynne has written and it is
another good one.In this book Wynne has united the two heroes from his previous books Dale Miller and Charley Payne.
At the Torture Rehabilitation Center in Minneapolis a patient
holds a secret that could prove to be a threat to mankind. There
are several forces out to kill him.
A man who is posing as the patient in the Torture Rehabilitaion
Center and his small army of bodyguards are killed in expert fashion by two blondes riding on a moped. They encounter two guns
from Dominance Rain and have the gunfight of their lives. The twin
blondes try again to kill the patient at the Center and once again run into Dale Miller and Charley Payne and barely escape with their lives. After pursuing the two blondes into Amsterdam
they strike a deal with the hired assassins. They are lead to two culprets who are the two true villains of this story. The two are
on a mission for Al-Bashir,a terrorist group. They have a very
scary terrorist act planned. It becomes a scary chase to stop the
terrorists.Dale Miller is severely wounded and it is up to Charley Payne to stop this plot.Wynne has written a very good book that you will enjoy reading.Don't miss it.
Solid action.......2004-06-27
Outstripped by the discoveries of no wmd in Irag, this is still a good action tale. Skimming is enough.

Customer Reviews:
Just read the manual.......2005-04-14
I was looking for several specific things in this strategy guide:
1. More details on weapons (how damage, rate of fire, etc. were modeled in the game).
2. Specifics for missions--numbers, locations, and armament of the Germans. Where specific save locations are.
3. How to attack each German position in the game.
What was delivered:
1. The weapon details are the same as the manual. I didn't see other details.
2. The book covers 'Normal' difficulty. German positions for higher levels are not mentioned. MG-42 (machine gun) positions are mentioned but no other armaments are discussed. Save positions are not included.
3. A general strategy is discussed with possible alternative attack positions. While a few areas are discussed in detail, there are a few places where the whole strategy is "eliminate the two Germans as you advance".
Overall, I am not impressed with this guide. It does not deliver the info I was looking for. Also, the book is repetitive. For example, the main text will have a description of your attack path. Then there will be a "tactical overview" which quotes the main text. Then there will be highlights that again quote the same thing.
Unless you are having problems developing strategy in the easy or normal mode, don't bother with this manual.
