3 out of 5 stars Superfluous; Not Enough Info on the Cast/Series.......2003-03-23

"Twin Peaks: Access Guide to the Town" opens with a puzzling, rather humorous letter from Mayor Milford (isn't he always?), which gives the pace to the rest of this tongue-in-cheek, pseudo-guide of Twin Peaks, Washington. There is some fun stuff in here, like mini bios and mug shots of the more relevant cast members (but why did the waitress from the Great Northern get such a large bio?), town maps, and even the jukebox selections at the Double R Diner, plus some recipes for any Twin Peaker's diet: cherry pie, coffee, and doughnuts.

However, this book is absolutely brimming with useless facts, like an excerpt from Andrew Packard's will, a ten-page section on Packard Sawmill (oh, thrills), Washington State history, first explorers, Native American tribes, flora, fauna, geology, weather, and a bizarre advertisement for Tim and Tom's Taxi-dermy (one part blind taxi driver; one part taxidermist). Even if you condensed the more important stuff, it would never reach the current 112 pages, but less than 1/4 of that, if that much.

I wouldn't consider this book necessary reading, even if you are a Twin Peaks fan; but if you love to collect Twin Peaks stuff (like I do), then you might consider buying this book. Even so, Twin Peaks fans looking for info on the series will more than likely be disappointed, because this book reads more like a boring tourist guide or junior high history textbook than a TV tie-in. I'd recommend checking out "Welcome to Twin Peaks: A Complete Guide to Who's Who and What's What" and/or "Twin Peaks: Behind the Scenes" instead.

What would a third season of this great television show provided? This book provides the clues as well as other interesting tidbits, including a drawing of the Owl Cave petroglyph and other oddities. Some entries are sketchy a best, but this is a must have for any fan of the little town with a popualtion of 51,201

Book Description

Eons in the future in a toxic, terror-stricken world, The City is a veritable paradise. A tiny hamlet of a few hundred sheltered citizens, it floats serenely just a few feet above the ground on a seemingly random course, safe from the predation of marauding monsters. But paradise is shattered when a vampire invasion threatens the peaceful haven. While the Vampire Hunter known only as “D” struggles to exterminate the lethal scourge, the gorgeous Raleigh Knight and the brash John M. Brassalli Pluto VIII seize control of The City, launching it on a new and deadly course. D’s travails are just beginning.

The heart-stopping thrills and nightmarish plot twists that fans of series have come to expect are on full display in Vampire Hunter D, Volume 4. Six stunning illustrations by the renowned Yoshitaka Amano underscore Hideyuki Kikuchi’s hellish vision of the future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moody and thoughtful.......2007-09-22

Raiser of Gales is an interesting, and I think introspective and thoughtful adventure. It more firmly establishes the what and why of D's world. Also, the wording in this novel is well written, far less "All your base-" than ended up getting through in the first translation.

My favorite is that an enemy uses a type of trap that was later incorporated into the second D movie, but I've risked spoiling it enough here.

5 out of 5 stars Vampires rule the night..........2007-08-21

...but when they're victims start moving about and killing people during the day time hours that can be a problem. The people of the village of Tepes are starting to become paranoid, seeing evil in everybody and everything. And they weren't too pure to begin with. Now they have the tall, dark, and handsome Vampire Hunter D in their town. And he is not too sure it is a vampire that is the problem.
Can D solve the mystery before too many people die at the hands of the new type of vampire? Can he solve the mystery before too many people die at the hands of their own protectors?
Great story, great illustrations, great second book to the ongoing Japanese horror series. I will be collecting as many as I can. Get it used or new!

5 out of 5 stars Yet Again Wonderful Book.......2007-07-16

I liked this book as much as I love the first one. This time D finds himself a world he just can't get out of. It keep repeating itself over and over again. The girl in this book as quit a charcter and did not annoyed me as much as Doris Lang. She keeps following D where ever he goes. And he always tell her to "Go Home" Which always made me laugh. The girl he meets is very interested in Vampires and D in the novel finds her strange. WOW that something coming from D. The book was fantasic as always. But it's little sad at the end though.

4 out of 5 stars Would make a great movie.......2007-01-24

This book would definitely make a great anime movie. The story is action-packed and full of unexpected twists and turns. However for me it was not as exciting as the second and third novel, may be because of the fact that it was all action and no feelings. I personally like to see a softer side of D. As much as I love reading all Kikuchi's novels I still don't understand why D enjoys hunting Nobles and protecting humans despite of the fact that humans are always trying to kill him one way or the other. Maybe we'll find out by the end of 17th novel...

4 out of 5 stars progress is being made.......2007-01-14

Many have already commented on the translation, so I will just take a moment to note that it has certainly progressed a bit beyond that of the previous novel. Action sequences in particular seem to have taken on a smoother pace, though the rather spartan and abrupt nature of the original text still causes the occasional coltish wobble.

As with all VHD novels there is a haunting quality to the prose that shines moon bright: D is still more or less at war with his soul, and our plucky coquette-du-livre is enjoyable. The odd coyness about Left-hand (the wise cracking sidekick/parasite) remains; though, since the novels are not particularly linear, this may be less noticeable to those who do not read the books in order or back to back.

Book Description

This is more than your average baby name book: unlike the dozens of mass-market paperbacks available, Town & Country Baby Names has the style and elegance to make an exquisite gift. Stunningly designed and produced, with charming line drawings throughout, it’s a lovely and useful resource at an excellent price. The introduction provides guidelines to consider when naming a baby, from researching the family tree for names to knowing the pitfalls of choosing a unisex or trendy name. Each entry includes the name’s origin and meaning (Claire comes from Latin, and means “clear and bright”; Stephen, from the Greek, means “crown”), and special features suggest possibilities such as Favorite Names from the Garden and Beloved Names from Children’s Literature.

This book is definitely for the "Sarah and David" set. We were looking for something with a little more "panache" for our daughter and found the names in this book to be the requisite classics that you would expect from a book compiled by the publishers of "Town & Country" magazine. I will say that it was organized very well into specific sections, but I do recommend that if you are looking for a more original children's name, that you look at the "Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana" book.

I thought TV Towns was just fabulous! It's fun, informative, and full of interesting facts about a variety of television shows. I couldn't stop reading about all the programs I watched as a child-from 'Dark Shadows' to 'Petticoat Junction'. It really brought back fond memories of my favorite shows growing-up along with some more recent addictions like 'The Simpsons' and 'Dawsons Creek'. If you want to know where to dine in Cicely, Alaska or how high the murder rate is in Cabot Cove this is where to look. I especially enjoyed the "Did You Know" sections for each chapter. Mr. Tropiano is an informed, witty writer. This book will make a great gift for anyone, including yourself!

On New Year's Day 1923, a mob of white men descended on Rosewood, Florida, to avenge an act that was only rumored to be true. The mob burned houses, killed many black men and women, and drove the rest of the small town's inhabitants away forever. This book contains the complete text of Like Judgment Day, Michael D'Orso's historical account of the Rosewood massacre, and An Essay on Rosewood by John Singleton, who directed the film Rosewood. With skillful storytelling and the detailed eye of an historian, D'Orso relates this gripping tale of a dark moment in America's history. Singleton's essay helps underscore the aftermath of this tragedy, which is evidenced in the ruined lives and shattered dreams of the people of Rosewood. It is a powerful story of ruin and redemption that still resonates more than half a century later.

5 out of 5 stars LIke Judgment day - Rosewood.......2007-03-12

This book was recommended by an African-American friend of mine. It is an excellent, excellent book. Shame on the bigots in our country.

5 out of 5 stars Kept me interested from the first page.......2003-04-03

This book is incredible. The way the writer takes us to the history of Rosewood from present day investigation to lawsuit. The background of this predominantly black community and the climate of the south in the early part of the last century are detailed thru newspaper articles and recollections of the survivors. This is definitely not for the sensitive, there are stories that will make your skin crawl. It's an important piece regardless, a book we all should read. The ending is positive and the Rosewood survivors are inspirational. Arnell Doctor, the man that investigated his mother's family all the way to the town that was obliviated from the map of America is an enduring and brave person you'll grow to admire as you read.

    5 out of 5 stars A provocative, gripping story.......2003-03-11

I found this book very, very moving; and as an African American woman, it took me on an emotional roller-coaster. I thought the author did a great job of filling out many of the people in the book, that have long since died. I didn't just want a recitation of the facts or a quick history lesson. I think this event deserved more than that, in its re-telling. I wanted to see, feel, hear and get a real glimpse of the people portrayed in the book, and D'Orso accomplished that "in spades". Well done.

4 out of 5 stars lesson in politics.......2001-12-13

Do not read this book looking for a detailed version of what happened in Rosewood 80 years ago. The stories of the survivors, the contemporary news clippings, and lack of unbiased information makes this a difficult if not impossible task. What this book is good at is illustrating the wheels of politics (a lesson that is not readily attained in such a readable format) and pointing out that while there have been many wrongs in American history, that it is important to not only owe up to them, but to try to DO something about them, no matter how long ago they may have happened. While some many think that D'Orso spends too much time introducing the MANY key players in this story, I believe that this adds to the book. He does this in an unbiased way and helped me see that there were so many interpretations on this issue and that none of them were wrong...just different. There are so many lessons that this book helped open my eyes to, that I believe the uncertainty of the history of the Rosewood massacre may add to the book rather than detract. I would reccomend this book to anyone. Period.

    2 out of 5 stars Overstuffed turkey.......1999-12-13

This is not a good book if you want to get straight to the facts or a quick summary of what happened. Tight it's not. The author writes in a meandering style, interrupting the narrative with the life stories of every incidental character. I mean I could careless about the jogging habits of some lawyer involved in the case. The movie about Rosewood was not that great either. I think the whole story needs to be retold.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Entreprenuerial romance.......2007-08-27

If you only read the back of the book, you will believe it is much grimmer than it is. Only part of this book is about the war. Ther rest is about taking risks to acheive an equitable relationship. It is, in many ways, a very feminist romance novel. At no point do we feel like anyone needs anyone else.

Also, if you have a geek for small businesses, you should check it out.

If you loved this book, you might also investigate Nevil Shute's "Trustee from the Toolroom".

3 out of 5 stars Not worth the postage.......2007-01-18

This is a so-so novel on which paying postage about equal to the cost of the book isn't worth while.

4 out of 5 stars A strong women, 1200 miles in the jungle, and trying to go back.......2006-12-30

Jean Paget inherits some money. She visits a village that had helped her during the war. She then decides to go to a small town and find a soldier named Joe Harmen who had helped her during the war. This part of the story is really part two in her life.

The story of the war and remembering what happened is the first part of her life in this book. In World War 2 she was one of 80 women as well as some children that were captured by the Japanese. They were marched over 1200 miles back and forth through jungles. The women survive in part because of the march and because no one really wanted them. Their captors really did not want to hurt or be thought of as being willing to hurt women and children. The Japanese soldiers had plenty of problems of their own. The soldiers try to find every way to avoid having to deal with the women but they seemed trapped with each other.

During the march Jean meets an Australian Soldier named Joe who is also a prisoner. He tries to help and as a result he seems to have been left dying for his act as punishment.

The book offers a lot of contrasts. Going back after the war demonstrates her decision to try to help and make a difference. To do that she tried making over the town where she finds her old friend into a " Town Like Alice". Jeans impact on the people in this book is the real impact that she in her life has made. The day to day impact she made on the lives of everyone she comes in contact with while marching through the jungles may not have been conscious decisions to help people but those efforts made a lot of difference. More than anything that she can do with her inheritance, her personal impact on people seems to be the more meaningful message.

Captured by the enemy during wartime is not easier for the women and children but it is different. Few books tell a story of war from this viewpoint. Jean's impact is the real story in this book. The events from the Jungle to an effort later in life to "go back" are the backdrop for her impact.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-02-25

Normally I would read the book first and then see the movie. In this case, I saw the movie first (the Australian movie) and just had to read the book. The book takes you through the horrors of Japanese occupation and internment and shows how love can help you resolute and resiliant. A great read and a must for your llibrary.

      4 out of 5 stars Good read!.......2005-12-17

I loved this book. A real easy read and one you'll find hard to put down. My only one complaint is that the leading female character was a little "gushy" with too many "Oh Joe's" which irked me somewhat. The overall story is fantastic though.

5 out of 5 stars One Great Book.......2001-12-07

If you love O-town you will love this book. It tells you everything about their show, "Making the Band." It was great and I enjoyed reading it- lets put it this way, I really don't like to read that much. I hope that if you buy this book, you will enjoy it as much as I do.

4 out of 5 stars O-Town book not just for kids.......2000-12-27

As a change of pace, I thought I might contribute a word or two about the book "O-TOWN: Making The Band" from an adult perspective. For those of us strange characters over the age of 25 who were hooked by the ABC Television docu-drama series about the nationwide search for five members of a carefully manufactured boyband, this paperback of the same name offers an interesting recap, overview, and commentary.

While clearly focused at a younger audience, the "Making The Band" book is not without merit for more mature readers. Interviews and observations from the band members themselves compose the bulk of the volume, adding insights and reflections not always included in the 22-minute series broadcasts aired last season on ABC.

The book is not without its problems. Contributing writer K.M. Squires doesn't so much write this volume as watch it compiled, leaving the majority of input to the performers and thus restricting her role to that of stenographer. The individual reflections of the band members do provide a certain amount of insight, particularly through their own conduct in contributing their commentaries. Rarely is a group of performers this young shown to present themselves at such a high level of courtesy, gratitude, and professionalism. You'll find no trash-talking or back-stabbing either of each other or their industry peers as the five boys share their observations of both their fellow band members and themselves. A pronounced level of modesty is also present as each performer tends to downplay his own strengths and accomplishments while answering the identical FAQ-style questions put to each of them.

The downside to this is that some of the more glowing attributes of this group are glossed over or ignored entirely. The personal conviction and fortitude of Ashley Angel, who faced not only one, but two of the most important people in his personal life [his father and girlfriend] withdrawing their full support from his musical aspirations comes to mind for a start. Jacob Underwood's own determination to achieve a record contract before age 21, and his willingness to stand up for his fellow performers [as when Erik was insulted by a visiting friend] are likewise omitted. Both of these exclusions might have been remedied by way of a more objective writer.

This is, after all, a group of extraordinary young men who can count among their achievements writing and recording two original songs in under 48 hours. I was disappointed to find there was not more documentation of that Germany recording session in this volume.

Shortcomings aside, this is a beautifully-packaged book, with a strong layout and colorful format, replete with photos of our talented quintet, both from studio shoots as well as candids. Though at times the paperback may read more like a high school yearbook than a TV series compendium, there is still enough information to hold the interest of older O-Town fans, as well as their more enthusiastic teenage supporters.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, some recognition.......2000-12-24

They write their own music, they have their own ideas, they are all equally hot and talented. Finally, some recognition for the band O-Town, from the hit TV series making the band. This book is great, with loads of photos and quotes from the guys. Lots of info, and a wonderful book for any O-town fan to own.

        4 out of 5 stars A must-have for O-Town fans........2000-12-07

If you are a fan of O-Town, there is no reason not to have this book. Ikaika fans may be disappointed, because he did not "participate" in the writing of the book. So, if you're looking for Ikaika, don't bother. Otherwise, it's cool! It goes through the whole process of the auditions, etc., and has detailed profiles of all the guys. I especially enjoy the sections written by their mothers!
