Customer Reviews:
"Must have" book.......2007-07-13
This book has invaluable information for all gun enthusiasts, not only S & W collectors. Very well written and illustrated. A "must have" book.
Indispensible.......2007-07-02
This book is indispensible to the S&W collector. It is the S&W collector's Bible. Worth three times thecost, you need to buy it right now!
Excellent reference and not a clone.......2007-05-31
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has proven to be a useful tool, offering better illustration of models and expanded listing of models and details over the more general guides. By comparison, the Standard Catalog provides 70 pages of Smith & Wesson listings, while the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson provides 432. The authors, Jim Supica and Richard Nahas are recognized as long standing experts in Smith and Wesson firearms, in both model identification and value.
The authors did an excellent job of identifying factors unique to S&W in value determination, including how S&W collectors might differ from others. Section One, as an example, covers S&W frame sizes and side plate screw counts, pinned and unpinned barrels and hand ejector models as they relate to model identification. Engraving is organized by artist, by time period and by source. NRA condition classifications are extended further into finish and factory refinish, modifications, serial number integrity and grips. I did not realize there was such a big market for S&W stocks. Not only are stocks addressed, but so are manuals and boxes.
The organization is good. Not appearing strictly in model number order or date of production, S&W revolvers are broken into groups such as "Tip Up", "Top Break", "Single Shot", "Early Hand Ejector", "Modern Hand Ejector", "Semi-Auto....". It really isn't so difficult for even a novice to navigate and there is a good solid model number index at the back of the book. Covered firearms are all S&W handguns through the S&W 460 and S&W 500 chambers, long guns, boxes, cases, and even AR 15 types of current production. Individual model entries are not sketchy. As an example, just one line listings of Model 10 specials and variations went on for two full pages. Model descriptions are very full, unique characteristics in product or packaging indicated, dates of production and production counts are present in each case. To some extend, branded general merchandise is also covered; knives, belt buckles, etc.
The book is an excellent value.
The Smith & Wesson Legend.......2007-05-13
All the revolvers/automatics that made Smith & Wesson famous along with the boxes/accessories that made them "complete" are shown in excellent detail. Serial/model numbers are listed with amazing accuracy along with information about the engineering changes and reason for them. A "must have" for anyone interested in these legendary firearms.
Great Book.......2007-05-13
This guide is the essential book for Smith & Wesson collectors. Written by two fellows that are always willing to respond to questions from anyone about the topic. Must reading

Antique Guns.......2007-02-22
Flayderman is the bible of antique gun collecting. Very informative historically with good bibliography for specific manufacturers. Only issue is copyright is 2001 and values have changed a lot in the interim.
Flayderman's Guide.......2006-06-29
I am an ardent collector of antique firearms. Flayderman's is an absolutely essential resource with detailed information about practically every firearm ever produced in early America. There simply is nothing comparable.
Flayderman's Guide.......2006-02-26
I am a CW buff, and often would look at items listed on the various sites, not knowing the details. Now I can be sure I know the model, date of mfg, value.
Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values.......2006-01-31
One may disagree with some of the prices given but if a novice collector bought only one book, this should be it for the wealth of information found within its almost 700 pages of photos and text. Whether your area of interest is Civil War arms, Indian guns, air and spring guns, or even whaling guns you'll find this book helpful. My only criticism is the arrangement of the index and that was the responsibililty of the publisher.
Flayderman is Out of Date.......2005-05-09
Flayderman's has not revised gun values since 2001. They put a date on the reverse of the fly page of 2004, but it just a re-print of the one compiled in 2000 and printed in 2001. I hope others are not fooled like I was thinking they are getting an updated book. I feel I wasted my money. Gun values have changed too much in the last few years, and I find this book worthless.

Customer Reviews:
Any of Bruce Canfield's books are worth reading!.......2007-02-04
Bruce Canfield's books are always worthwhile reading for the interested student of history: he always explains the development and technical details of the firearm under review within its historical context, never slacking in detail yet somehow never getting bogged down in minutiae.
If you don't already have _War Baby_ and are interested in the M1 Carbine, this is a worthwhile book; if you already own _WB_ or are planning on getting it and are uninterested in the M1 Garand rifle, you would be better off saving your money & spending it on _War Baby_, which focuses exclusively on the M1 Carbine. I have read _War Baby_ and found the section on the Carbine in Canfield's book to be (understandably) inadequate in comparison, but wholly enjoyable and complete in its own right if not already familiar with the extensive and absolutely thorough coverage provided on the subject by _War Baby_.
Any fan of the Garand rifle is well-served by adding this title to his personal library. That said: I really wish that this title was offered as part of a compendium with Bruce Canfield's _Johnson Rifle_, as that other book is rather pricey in comparison; if the two were combined at the present price of his book on the Johnson rifle, it would be a no-brainer to buy it, offering as it would a fairly comprehensive look at the long arms developed and used by the U.S. immediately prior & during World War II. Something the publisher should consider, as I imagine sales of the book on the Johnson rifle are handicapped by it's high price, while this book is not as thorough as others devoted exclusively to their single topical long arm and hence could benefit from the addition of the added material on the Johnson rifle which competed with the Garand for political favor...
Guide book.......2007-01-10
Although I am not finished reading this book, I am very pleased with the content so far. This book goes into very good detail with good quality pictures. I was looking for a book to assist me in the purchase of an M1, and I feel more comfortable in my quest now that I am much more educated on the specifics of differant models and details purtaining to certain years and serial numbers as pointed out in this book. The content may be a little to detail oriented for the reader that is just trying to gain the history of this weapon, but for the reader looking to learn the "nuts and bolts" of this gun, I would highly recommend this guide.
Incomplete and dry.......2004-05-10
As a collector of U.S. military rifles, I decided
to purchase this book. I found the carbine information
helpful, if a little confusing, and incomplete in
regard to some of the later developments, and there
is NOTHING in here at all helpful about ammo.
I have ALL the M1 books, though. And this area
is where Canfield sort of falls apart and becomes
irrelevant. He completely poo-poohs the Italian
Breda and Beretta rifles, does not explore the
rebuilds or much of the postwar history, does not
mention civilian developments at all, and
badmouths the "import rifles"...which pretty much
means what today's shooters and collectors can
actually get is skipped COMPLETELY.
And a lot of the photos, while pretty good, are not
completely explained. In point of fact, there is
some good material here, but not much of it, and
it is all incomplete.
Collectors Must Have Book.......2000-01-18
I found this book to be just what I was looking for in a Reference/History book. Bruce Canfield must have had the average military collector in mind when he wrote this work. He has updated the original text and the clarity of the pictures is excellent. It has helped answer some of the questions that I had about my M1 Garand. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR COLLECTORS.
Excellent reference book.......1999-06-10
If you own an M1 or are thinking of buying an M1 either Garand style or a carbine you NEED this book. As a collector of military rifles this book paid for itself the first weekend I had it. A must have for U.S. military weapons collectors.

Customer Reviews:
So-So, more helpful for DMs.......2007-04-05
Like others, I was expecting a lot more out of this book. It described only a small handful of new types of equipment, hardly glossed over new potions/poisons, and was mostly descriptors of specific magic items. Aesthetics-wise, the illustrations were kind of sub-par and the guide was in black and white. It's not a big deal, but the color in the other books added a lot of character this book lacks. It's sort of an insult to injury.
What it did give was a nice handful of new exotic weapons and a handy pricing guide for a DM. If your campaign involves a lot of movement by ship or caravan, there's info on that, and if you have a small group that often hires minions, there's a huge pricing table on NPCs you can hire (everything from healers to jewelers to bodyguards).
If you're in a group, it might be worth it for one person to have the book, especially if you're in a campaign where exotic weapons would be a good spice.
Mixed bag. Some good stuff and some not so interesting.......2006-11-20
This book can be really good or not useful at all depending on what you want to get out of it.
The book is broken into six chapters and a appendix treasure table. Chapter one tells of weapons and armor. It opens with new exotic weapons like tiger claws, and the greatsword, mercurial. Some of the weapons are historical like the lucern hammer others are complete fantasy. There is a chart for weapons, technology and culture in case you wish to specify a place or time for your campaign. New armor is introduced. Things like leaf armor(elves) and dwarven stone armor are described and priced like any other armor. This is good for flavor in a campaign in my opinion.
A expansion of adventuring gear is the basis for the second chapter. Theres quite a bit of relatively modern equipment that is made availble. Things like fishing tackles, hacksaws, butterfly nets etc. Additional types of clothing are added to the list. You can get a fur-trimmed hat, or a broad brimmed hat. There are new types of alcohol to tease your players with such as frostwine, and mushroom wine. There are trading goods for mostly additional color for your games.
The next chapter covers vehicles of various types, such as vessels, wagons, and flying vehicles. There are additional rules for vehicles and collisions and vehicles being repaired.
Chapter four covers hirelings and creatures, mostly costs for things like midwives, valets, haberdashers and the hiring of mercenaries. There are rules for exotic troops as well as pets and mounts.
Chapter five deals with new magical goodies, primarly weapons, potions, staffs, and miscellanous magic items.
I have used this book to help create more color for my setting. In particular the trade goods, have been used for scenarios. I have used the armor like the leaf armor to bring color to the elvish lands that my players have visited but I can easily see DMs not using this book. There is plenty of crunch in this book for a ambitious DM to add color to his campaign.
Some issues, but not a big disappointment.......2006-03-09
This books goes over several new weapons (Both martial and exotic) which may be implemented into your D&D campagin. Though it's magical item section was rather disappointingly lax, it however, had useful details on various types of sailing ships, as well as mechanical flying devices.
I would have perfered if it had included some tables to aid in the creation of your own vehicles, but unfortunately I was unable to locate any. All in all, however, it is useful reference, and the various new armor materials, weapons, and more will prove interesting for your campagin if you are willing to pay the price.
Helpful for players. More meat wanted........2005-10-26
This is a good book for the player looking for more equipment options. It especially adds some eastern weapons. But it would have been nice to find more weapons, armor, and special material options. An 'Arms & Equipment Guide' that spends 14 pages on weapons & armor and 17 pages on vehicles (!) is a little out of balance. More of the good stuff. But overall a helpful book. A 3.5 update would be nice.
Fuzzy Use.......2004-12-01
I bought the 3.0 Arms and Equipment Guide because of the new armor, adventuring gear, clothing table, food and drink prices table, poison table, vehicles, and creatures (mounts, pets, etc). I did not buy 3.0 Arms and Equipment Guide because I was expecting a miracle.
Good thing, too, because the book didn't provide much more than I wanted. Yes, there are hundreds of new weapons and other random things, but everything blurs together in one run-on list. I'm not that fond of the magic weapons list, but the things I did want were there, thus I bought the book.
If you're looking for random information to throw at your DM or include in the game, this can be a helpful book. Don't buy it if you're looking for an awesome addition to your equipment and arms collection, because it probably won't help you much.
Book Description
Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for having a good blaster at your side.
The galaxy is a dangerous place, and even the most capable heroes need the right equipment to get the job done. Outfitting for a rescue mission on a frigid ice planet differs from gearing up for an assault on a crime lord's jungle world headquarters. But with the right connections, and enough credits, heroes can acquire all the weapons and tools needed to survive any situation.
This sourcebook features:
• An arsenal of weapons and armor, along with rules for customizing and personalizing them.
• A wide variety of droids from across the galaxy, including the legendary R-Series astromech droids, binary load lifters, and the RA-7 "Death Star" droid.
• An array of vehicles from landspeeders to military walkers.
• Essential survival equipment, including breathers, comlinks, scanners, medpacs, and tools.
To use this sourcebook, you also need the
Star Wars Roleplaying Game Revised Core Rulebook.

StarWars Arms & Equipment Guide.......2005-09-15
This is a very useful volume filled with lots of information and ideas for gear. My GM has already used it to modify some of the ships in our game with information from the book. Thanks to that our survival percentage has just gone up. (I'm not thinking about how the danger quotient of the bad guys has gone up too.) ;-)
A must have for Players & GM.......2005-07-22
WEAPONS
The selection of weapons is HUGE (even adding more types than the RCRB has listed). Each weapon has WPs & break DCs (which I also like). Along with new rules on Customizing & personalizing weapons.
Species chip (a optional device for Sonic weapons) - which increases effectiveness against a selected species (a few species is listed, but a GM can add more if he/she wishes) - and they are pretty cheap too.
ARMOR
Vast selection of armor & protective gear. Also rules for non-human species.
DROIDS
All Astromech units are included (which are my favorite). They also have many, many more droid types & units listed.
VEHICLES
Rules on custimizing. A big selection including : airspeeders, swoops, speeder bikes, and many more.
Also for the STAR WARS fan who is familiar with Tatooine, this book also includes the popular "Sandcrawler".
OTHER
There's even a section on jetpacks & other devices that let you fly.
There are a lot more things in here (buy the book, I'm not telling you everything).
Not really worth the purchase.......2004-11-10
For SW fans who absolutely MUSt have every possible variation of weapon, speeder and droid available, then this book is a good purchase, however, nothing in this book is a vast improvement on what's in the core rules.
On the up side, there seems to be no redundancy in this book, meaning that if it's listed in the Core Rules, then it's not listed here. The downside being that you have to have both this book and the Core Rulebook handy for a complete list of items.
A MAJOR NEGATIVE is that there are no weapons/droids/vehicles/etc. tables for quick reference like there are in the core rulebook, which makes comparing items at a glance much more difficult (I got around tis by printing up a comparison table in excel).
Also, to my great dissapointment, there are not starfighters, cargo ships, etc. at all in this book. Only speeders, walkers, bikes, etc., none of which are all that impressive. Infact, save for the armor and possibly the droids, there's nothing impressive about this book at all.
I did, however, like the ability to customize and personalize weapons, armor and--to a limited extent--vehicles.
Some weapons have minor benefits here or there to the ones in the core rules, such as an increase in damage, but at the cost of range and/or accuracy. Spending more will not really get you a superior weapon (unless you personalize). Sorry folks.
I have a HUGE beef with the armor section. Armor lists the type, proficiency requires, cost, max dex bonus, speed, armor check penalty, weight, availability, era, and damage reduction, but not the DEFENSE BONUS the armor provides! WTF???
All in all this book could have been done MUCH better. I don't recommend it.
Finally a book that answers questions.......2003-07-03
Glad I bought this book. The Star Wars RPG left many questions about weapons and technology open. This book answers about 30% of those questions, which is a lot of material.
for added flavor.......2003-04-16
To add a better sense of diversity, this book is an awesome tool.
It give a greater depth to the technical players out there
Book Description
To collectors of modern military uniforms, Vietnam era tigerstripe combat fatigues have always been a much sought after commodity. The pattern itself, in all of its classic forms, is both exotic and unique and carries with it an immediate, esthetic sense of the full drama of that not to distant Southeast Asian conflict. There exists however, surrounding this one camouflage pattern numerous misconceptions. Tiger Patterns analyzes to the most minute degree, the finite variances which defined the many original, Vietnam era tigerstripe patterns and uniform cuts and establishes dependable identification techniques and practices, whether your particular interests area as a historian, veteran, modeler, or collector and enthusiast., over 280 color and b/w photographs, line drawings, 8 1/2" x 11"
Customer Reviews:
Perfect Guide Book!.......2007-01-22
Tiger stripe Fan's Collectible Books.
Very interesting book.
Thank you.
So many details.......2005-09-10
When I purchased this book, I didn't expect to see all the diagrams and charts that it included. The author not only has photos and descriptions of the numerous tiger patterns, but he studied the different buttons and zippers as well! He has hand drawn pictures of patterns and cuts, and there are even a few personal photos of his family wearing tigers from his personal collection.
I highly recommend this book for collectors and people who want to know more about Vietnam tigerstripes.
Excellent book on tiger strips with some glaring oversights.......2002-06-12
Sgt Johnson's book on the tiger stripe camouflague pattern and its variants is an excellent book. Indeed, it is the authoritative reference on the subject for some time. The authour's methodical sysmatization and meticulious research have certainly provided militaria collectors with highly rigourous technical standards.
Although this book is primarly for collectors, modelers and reenactors will find this book equally helpful in their research.
Nevertheless, there are a number of glaring oversights that detract from the book's overall value.
First, there's no index. Given the book's meticulous details and bewildering variety of tiger strip patterns, an index isn't merely useful; it's absolutely essential.
Second, there's no bibliography. Its absence is inexplicable; how is the collector, modeler, historian or reenactor supposed to learn more about this pattern and become more discerning without the primary and secondary sources? Especially since the book is primarily for them.
Third, I found the historical background of the tigerstrips rather too perfunctory.I would've appreciated to know how the French Indochinese lézard pattern evolved into the tiger strips
Fourth, spelling mistakes mar this book and it's unjustifiable considering that the book is sold by a professional publisher and its price tag
Finally, the authour makes cryptic referencs to the 1990 edition of the book. Yet when I looked at the inside page for the publication data, the book was published in 1999.
Despite these glaring oversights, which can be corrected in a subsequent reprint, this book is highly recommended
EXCELLENT.......1999-06-19
This is an EXCELLENT book about Vietnam War Tiger dtripe uniforms. THis is a book for experts or for whom wants to be the Tigerstripe uniform expert. If you like to study Vietnam War stuffs. THe last thing you want to miss is this book.

Good.......2007-09-23
Questo libro è utile per riconoscere un' arma quando viene vista in un documentario o in un film, le descrizioni sono un po' sintetiche e le foto di non grande qualità. Comunque considerato il prezzo di Amazon, per noi italiani si può acquistare...
Easy Reference for Gun Enthusiasts, but has many flaws about photo.......2006-12-19
This book contains some very useful and interesting information about current tactival small arms. However, it does have some significant flaws. This book is black and white but the photos are not good. Many photos (about 40%) in this book are unclear. I had saw these photos in internet. I think that these photos are just direct copies from internet. These photos are just printed by poor computer printer and no professional treatment.
Many books about small arm are in my collection, but this one is out. I wish it will be better in next edition.

Standard Reference Work.......2001-06-15
This book is part of a series of books that has been coming out now for many years. They consist of an article section, a trends in cutlery section (with lots of artfully done photos, and a directory section of the cutlery collectible trade and custom makers, etc. I have the whole run and look at them now and again for reference.
Knives 2001 Goes Hollywood.......2000-10-30
Well, not really but I was disappointed with the advertising inserts in this year's issue. It detracts from the overall usefulness of the book. The Knives series are reference manuals in my opinion and the semigloss Junglee insert and the "Marketplace" advertisement was a bore.
The B&W photos of the knives are nice as usual and even with a new editor (Joe Kertzman) at the helm the book still seems to retain a lot of Ken Warner's flavor.
This year's articles are interesting though not as much as last years issue. I particulary liked the article by Mastersmith/Wordsmith Ed Fowler. Man, does that guy know how to write about knives. He can make 'em, too! It is nice to see Bernard Levine and Butch Winter back again this year.
The Trends section placement of photos are A1. There are some stunning knives there like Jerry Fisk's damascus bowie and Tom Johanning's survival knife. How do these guys do it? There were many other great knives there. Too many to list, though. Check out the pocketknife section. I would love to own anyone of them. Dan Burke's work is just out of this world as is Richard Rogers.
The factory trends section is very good this year with a nice variety. Some excellent knives there also like the Benchmade Mel Pardue Axis lock and the reemergence of the Marbles knife co. Missing in my opinion is the knife/bargain of the year. The MicroTech LCC design by Greg Lightfoot--an exception tactical knife built like a tank and priced most folks can afford.
The directory gets bigger and bigger each year and I like that. The Knives series books are the first I turn to when I am checking out a new maker. The directory includes a state-by-state listing along with the alphabetical listing, a knife photo index (smart move) and a plethora of other specialist ranging from sheathmakers to engravers and etchers.
Knives 2001 is the number one knife reference book to have this year. Overall I am really pleased with it and each year seems to get a little bit better sans the advertising pitch.
I highly recommend this book. A must for any knife nut! :-)
