Book Description

The idea of participating in a triathlon may sound out of the realm of possibility for those without a typical jock-athlete’s honed build, intense focus, and competitive mindset. But now Slow Fat Triathlete opens the door to those who may not come quite so equipped. After years of obesity, poor health, and self-doubt, Jayne Williams took part in her first triathlon in 2002 to prove something to herself and became hooked on the rush of the race. Today she is a self-proclaimed “slow fat triathlete,” unafraid to overcome humiliation, laugh at her foibles, have fun, and accomplish impressive goals. Slow Fat Triathlete is a book for those who may be overweight, out of shape, undisciplined, or otherwise unprepared to enter a triathlon but are curious to try. Through personal stories, practical ideas and suggestions, and uproarious anecdotes, this book inspires, encourages, and proves that with a little training, almost everybody can have a great time and reap huge rewards from pursuing their tri dreams—and that everyone can become a participant and an athlete.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars motivating and fun read!.......2007-07-06

I'm not quite new to the athletic world... still, I found Slow Fat Triathlete impossible to put down. In a very unusual twist for books like these, it is wildly entertaining with its conversational style and humorous slant.
When you finish this, you'll feel like you can take on the world-- and certainly, the triathlon.

5 out of 5 stars Informative an a HOOT.......2007-06-01

This book is not for the seasoned trialthlete but offers an honest insight to those of us who love to compete but may never actually be competitive. A solid, honest beginning for someone looking to "Try a Tri".

5 out of 5 stars Great Great Great.......2007-05-27

This book is amazing! Very motivating, helpful advice, let's you know that triathletes are not perfect Greek Gods. I love all of her little anicdotes and race day diaries. I have never felt so capable of accomplishing something in my life. This book is real and down to earth. Lots of help about finding equipment that will suit you. I have always been a nervous cyclist. I am scared to death of those skinny-tired death traps they call road bikes. This book let me know that bikes of all sorts are welcome in triathlons, especially if you're in it to finish, not just in it to win it. Maybe one day I will get over my fear of road bikes, until then Mountain-bike hybrid it is.
Buy this Book!! It rocks. Especially for normal everyday women.

5 out of 5 stars Slow Fat Triathlete.......2007-05-24

What a wonderfully informative and entertaining book. An inspiration for every athlete that is not stick thin!

4 out of 5 stars sincere motivation for the beginner.......2007-05-15

This is a very funny, and truthful account from a woman who is going through the lumps that so many experience while breaking into triathlon. She perserveres where many fail, and inspires with a "train through the pain while smiling" attitude.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the Connection.......2007-09-01

After reading this book, my son felt as if he weren't alone with the issues that he faces everyday.

3 out of 5 stars Some Good Ideas.......2007-04-11

My grandson recently went on medication for ADD. I have read several books and had high hopes for this book. There were some good ideas to use to help with getting organized and sticking to task (really good ideas for anyone not just kids with ADD), but I was disapointed that so much was said about the child having a "disorder", being misunderstood and not fitting in well. In my grandson's case he was having problems completing school work and never felt he had a disorder or had trouble getting along with others.

3 out of 5 stars Older ADHD kids looking for help.......2007-03-09

There are lots of good tips in here, many were not new but the text is well-written and directed nicely to the child. Best for older kids who really are looking for self-help. I had hoped I could use it to read to my 9 year old recently diagnosed with ADHD. Not as helpful in that sense.

5 out of 5 stars FOR CHILDREN WITH ADD/ADHD.......2007-03-08

I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR MY SON WHO HAS ADHD. IT HELPED EXPLAIN TO HIM IN EASY TO UNDERSTAND FORMAT, EXACTLY HOW ADHD WORKS ON HIS BRAIN. THE TIPS FOR HIM IN THIS BOOK ARE EASY AND FUN TO DO. WE READ THIS TOGETHER AND HE REALLY RESPONDED IN VERY POSITIVE WAYS. WE USE THE TIPS NOW AND REREAD PARTS OF THIS BOOK WHEN WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO SOLVE AN ISSUE AT HOME OR AT SCHOOL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN!!

5 out of 5 stars a must read for parents together with their child!.......2007-02-18

I purchased this book after reading Understanding Girls with ADHD. This as written by two of the psychologist that wrote the first book. My daughter and I are reading it together and look forward to sharing what we learn with our therapist. The book starts with an introduction one for the adult and one for the kid, from there the book is broken down into sections working on the areas of difficulty. The book is filled with cartoon drawings and activities for fun and is truly written on a workable family level.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Hardly counts as cooking.......2007-09-07

Nearly every recipe relies heavily on canned soup, processed cheese, bottled sauce, etc. Not my idea of home cooking. I'm donating this one to the library book sale.

5 out of 5 stars Good Cookbook!!! Lots of Comfort Food!.......2007-07-23

Bought this after seeing it at a friends home. Have made a few of the recipes and all are very good. I am very pleased with this book - it has many great family style recipes that are easy and healthy.

2 out of 5 stars Oh, yuk!.......2006-12-30

Just more dumb crock-pot recipes that rely on one packaged product after another being dumped in. Why would I want to use a whole bottle of BBQ sauce in a recipe?

Where is the book that uses fresh ingredients, mixed together in a sensible (and maybe slightly creative??) way, simmers them together in the crock pot during the course of the day, resulting in an easy - and HEALTHY - meal? This book is NOT it!

3 out of 5 stars Not many interesting recipes.......2006-12-08

I want a slow cooker cook book for main course recipes, this book emphasizes side dishes, desserts, etc. and has few main course recipes that interest me. Some of the ones I looked at said to cook 9 hours on high which doesn't make sense, based on my experience with crock pots, but I did not try them so can't say if the advice is wrong. I purchased used, cheaply, but would NOT pay full price for it.

3 out of 5 stars Not well thought out.......2006-10-16

Although the recipes are lovely, too many of them (at least half!) have cooking times of 4 or 5 hours. So for the wonderful breakfast casserole, I'm supposed to get up at 4 a.m. to put it together for breakfast at 8? What were they possibly thinking? And I'm also supposed to run home from work at 2 p.m. to put dinner on for 6 p.m. that night? Huh? Maybe these recipes are supposed to appeal to folks who don't have jobs, and are free to start the meal at anytime (althought the 4 a.m. breakfast recipe still puzzles me). But are they really the folks who use slow cookers? Most of us want recipes that cook for at least 8 hours, so that we can put them on before we go to work and have them ready and waiting when we get home. Maybe someone at Southern Cooking needs a reality check.

Book Description

Founded in Italy in 1986 by charismatic Italian gourmand Carlo Petrini, Slow Food has grown into a phenomenally successful movement against the uniformity and compromised quality of fast food and supermarket chains. With nearly 85,000 members in 45 countries around the world, Slow Food has developed from a small, grassroots group into the most influential gastronomic movement in the world. Known as the "WWF of endangered food and wine," Slow Food not only focuses on a slower, more natural and organic lifestyle that complements nature, but also works to preserve dying culinary traditions, conserve natural biodiversity, and protect fading agricultural practices threatened in this age of mass consumerism. The book takes the reader on a gastronomic journey through the practices and traditions of the world's ethnic cuisines, from the artisanal cheeses of Italy to the oysters of Cape May and the native American turkey. It includes testimonies from Slow Food representatives—such as Alice Waters of Chez Panisse—illustrating exactly what they are doing—and what still needs to be done—to preserve them.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars to much words.......2007-05-14

Very nice edition, great information, but to many words spoiled, to many useless anectdotes.

4 out of 5 stars Slow - Slower - Slowest.......2007-02-27

The Slow Food Movement is a response to Fast Food and the homogenization of food. The movement seeks to rediscover the conviviality of food, aims to preserve regional cuisines, and addresses agricultural issues. This book offers a good account of the development and the complex structure of Slow Food. The authors clearly lay out the philosophy and objectives of the movement and discuss a variety of food-related topics such as biodiversity, genetically modified food and food in relation to socio-economics. The book is augmented by a well selected bibliography, a glossary and a chronology of the movement. A personal interview with Carlo Petrini, the founder of the Slow Food Movement reveals more about Petrini's own relationship to food and raises controversial issues such as the contribution of Slow Food to the battle against hunger in the world.
However, quotations are sometimes too long and the first two chapters of the book that describe the roots of the movement contain a lot of detailed and excessive information. From chapter 3 onwards, the material gets much richer in content. Terms such as biodiversity and genetically modified food could be explained in more detail. The overall tone sometimes lacks objectivity and the title "Slow Food Revolution" doesn't seem quite adequate for a movement which is growing, but is probably not going to "revolutionize" eating habits. A more detailed discussion of how the philosophy of Slow Food can be integrated into daily life would be useful in this book.
I can recommend the book to anyone who is interested in discovering more about alternative approaches to food. For me it has been an inspiration to reflect upon my personal eating patterns and I've gained some knowledge about nutrition and agriculture. The authors invite their readers to re-think conventional eating habits while highlighting food as a way to experience conviviality and pleasure.

"If you live long enough, you will probably become infirm and develop at least some of the trappings of old age," admits author Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D. "However, you can make that happen later rather than sooner; you can delay the onset of disability and chronic disease so as to enjoy life and remain vigorous and independent for most of your later years." Enabling you to accomplish that is Rosenfeld's aim in Live Now, Age Later. Each chapter deals with a specific aging complication--such as Alzheimer's, cancer, depression, stroke, osteoporosis, heart attacks, prostate enlargement, and losses of hearing, vision, libido, and teeth. For each condition, Rosenfeld presents the cause, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and specific strategies for lessening your risk. These may include diet, exercise, stress reduction, supplements, and medications, depending on the condition. A "what to remember" list at the end of each chapter is helpful for review. This is not a "miracle cure" book that tells you to take some alphabet-soup combination of vitamins or esoteric herbs to guarantee living to 120 with the body and mind of a 20-year-old. Rather, the recommendations are moderate and medically conventional. Rosenfeld's style is clear and accessible; his suggestions are easy to understand and implement. --Joan Price

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a must read.......2000-07-29

Dr. Rosenfeld writes a book that we all should have in our library. Dr. Rosenfeld tackles a lot of the problems that most of us encounter in our lifetime and tells us how we could delay or even prevent them all together. There are some problems we are afraid to speak to our doctors about, Dr. Rosenfeld answers those questions as well.

This is a book I plan on having and using in my every day life. A must read.

3 out of 5 stars LONG LIVE THE CLOCK!.......2000-06-14

Rosenfeld being a bestselling cardiologist, I would heed his message: longevity is the great conquest of the new millennium, but it is fundamental to keep in good health and in full control of one's own faculties. Is that an oxymoronic utopia? Not at all. The author proceeds to offer an exhaustive guide to prevent or fight the pathologies and ailments of old age. A strong supporter of alternative medicine as against the traditional one, Dr Rosenfeld confronts numerous related themes by presenting the latest remedies, demolishing the false myths, and giving practical advice. A healthy book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Information in a Great Format!.......1999-10-29

After reading some of the online reviews, I was a bit skeptical but had to read the book out of curiosity. I am a medical information specialist and consider myself extremely well informed. Still, Dr. Rosenfeld managed to come up with things I'd not read elsewhere and I was able to immediately put these to good use. His style is always entertaining, his knowledge of the field appears vast, and his research superior. I'll be buying several as Christmas gifts - it is that good.

    1 out of 5 stars Another rip-off.......1999-09-28

I don't know why I don't just give up on Dr. Rosenfeld's books. He simply gathers together information that we already know, if we read, that is. Dr. Rosenfeld reminds me of Milton Berle, he never met someone else's work he didn't love.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-07-14

Upon the purchase of this book, I anticipated new insights and information regarding preventative anti-aging breakthroughs. I felt the title was very misleading and, therefore, disappointed in the content. Although readable, it failed to say anything "new". It amounts to your basic medical handbook and should be titled accordingly.

    Book Description

The medical correspondent for women's health on the Today show, bestselling author and a regular on Oprah, Dr. Judith Reichman explains exactly why we age, how we age, and what we can do to slow down the aging process.

Targeted for women in their forties and fifties, Slow Your Clock Down shows women how to extend the minutes and hours of their bodies' internal and external clocks.

As a practicing physician in Los Angeles, Dr. Reichman has followed and treated many women who, despite advancing years (and in LA, this is defined as anyone over the age of forty), continue to feel young, vital, creative and healthy. She has helped women overcome many of the gynaecological problems related to hormonal changes and age. Dr. Reichman's patients have fought and even thwarted heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity and cancer. In her first bestselling book she voiced the Baby Boomer's battle cry I'm Too Young to Get Old. She has continued to do so in her next two books: I'm Not in the Mood and Relax, This Won't Hurt.

In this book, Dr. Reichman uses the characteristic, sharp, incisive voice that has made her one of the country's foremost commentators on health issues. She addresses the aging effects of women's hormonal changes, offers a healthy anti–aging diet, exercise, and vitamin regimen, and discusses how to stay young mentally, emotionally, and physically, providing women with invaluable, medically based methods to maximize well living and minimise aging.

Dr. Reichman makes excellent suggestions on how to maintain optimal health with diet, exercise and a positive attitude, all very important for successful aging. She also points out that women must make their reproductive choices early in life as their biological clock is ticking. Unfortunately, she does not offer suggestions on how to slow it down.

5 out of 5 stars Big Book, Big Brians, Big Chi.......2005-08-28

A treasure chest of knowledge looking at various health aspects and history of tai chi chuan. A valuable book for beginners outlining many of the basic principles of the art which are hard to come by. This will also help prospective students identify the right teacher for them. Advanced students will endulge in the first hand experience of someone who has thoroughly studied and mastered the taoist internal arts. It is obvious that Mr. Frantzis was not trying to "teach" tai chi movements through the book, because this can often result in injury and misunderstanding. It much safer and effective to learn from a qualified instructor. An "encyclopedia" which should not be over looked.

5 out of 5 stars the big picture of tai-chi written by a real master.......2004-08-05

the best book about tai chi i have ever read. the author has an incredible profound knowledge of tai chi and isn`t too good for trying to pass it on in the most clearly written language. he wisley doesnt want to teach this living taoist art of moving through a book, which a lot of writers tried to and failed. instead he provides a down to earth guide of why to start, how it works and criterias to find a suitable teacher. which is the most important and difficult first step in learning tai chi.

i found very good material on his web site : www.energyarts.com .

      enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars The author has a BIG ego in a BIG book.......2004-01-08

I wanted to buy this book as a gift for Christmas, but I declined. So far, it is the only Tai Chi book to say it can boost your sexual performance on the cover. Too bad it does not really tell you how, that's just on the cover to draw you in. There are no real forms, no techniques. It's not a how-to. It's thick and looks nice, but has one big theme: The author is saying how good is his supposed skill. Maybe he can con Westerners into buying this book, but I think most average masters in China can beat the crap out of Bruce Frantzis. I am a novice player in Tai Chi, but even I can see that this book is a thick pile of pulp. If his skill is as good as the quality of this book, I can(and should) beat him up for spoiling the reputation of Tai Chi. There are better books out there, go buy them.

The Big Book of Tai Chi
By Bruce Frantzis. Published by Thorsons (add UK price here?)

For a man who confesses to hating writing, Bruce Frantzis does a damn fine job of it. He has produced some of the best, most down-to-earth, books on the internal arts and his new mammoth volume - The Big Book of Tai Chi - is literally just that. He has decided to look at Tai Chi from an unbiased viewpoint, not favouring any particular style or school. Rather, he has looked at the foundation for all Tai Chi styles using his encyclopaedic knowledge and written a primer to them all.

Mr Frantzis begins with the history, always contentious, and progresses to explaining how and why the internal arts work in relation to health, both physical and mental. He has long been a voice crying in the wilderness, warning of the inevitable collapse of the health systems in the West. While working as a Chi Kung doctor in China, Mr. Frantzis saw how vital Tai Chi and Chi Kung were in a country with a shortage of western-style doctors. Consequently, he has worked hard to bring his knowledge to the West, in the hope that it will be used to improve the health of the masses as it has in China. His ground-breaking Chi Kung book, Opening the Energy Gates, was just the beginning. The Big Book has a wider scope, discussing what the differing styles of Tai Chi can do for health and what to look for in a good teacher. Mr. Frantzis also considers the Taoist approach to health and how we in the West could benefit from it. Some of this has been covered in other books, but this one is a real blockbuster both in size and approach. The publishers are pushing its launch worldwide and seem to be of the opinion that this book will bring Tai Chi and Chi Kung to the attention of a much wider audience. It is an easy read but does not 'dumb down' the arts. It is intended for both beginners and seasoned players. One very detailed chapter is geared specifically to intermediate and advanced practitioners, another describes what beginners can expect from Tai Chi.

Most Chinese masters have difficulty with our language and we certainly have trouble in understanding their often flowery and ambiguous descriptions of the form. With his fluent Chinese, Mr Frantzis gained insights into the Chinese culture and arts that is reflected in both his teaching and writing. The author also has the great advantage of being not only a top martial artist but also an accomplished practitioner in medical Chi Kung and Tui Na bodywork, both of which are branches of traditional Chinese medicine. As a lineage master in the Taoist arts in general, he can give an overview that few of us would be aware of were it not for this book. He considers how Tai Chi works for healing, physical and emotional self-defence, stress reduction, promoting longevity and developing spirituality. One chapter looks at how tai chi can benefit different groups of people. For example, tai chi can mitigate the effects of carpal tunnel syndrome in computer users. Another chapter helps students choose the most appropriate tai chi form for their particular needs. The five main styles, large, medium and small frame tai chi, and long, medium and short forms are discussed in detail.

An excellent primer, the book could have done with some more illustrations, but as it does not champion a particular style, the interminable form photos aren't missed at all. A must for beginners, this huge work would also benefit any serious player who is modest enough to admit to not knowing it all and open enough to look deeper.

I couldn't wait to buy this book. What a disappointment!! Sure enough Mr. Frantzis would make a great politician: he managed to fill over 200 pages with ... nothing.

      Book Description

WE ALL WANT TO EXPERIENCE successful, even dramatic, spiritual growth. Yet we often feel as though we're taking "two steps forward, three steps back." As we learn--and relearn--the same spiritual lessons time and again, we become discouraged, thinking that we are not changing or growing. But, as author Carole Mayhall gently reminds us, such experiences are a normal, even vital, part of the healthy Christian life.

With heart-warming vulnerability, Mayhall explains and illustrates that spiritual growth is a lifelong endeavor--but through it all, your heavenly Father is whispering, "I will uphold you. I will sustain you. I will carry you." Painting a vivid picture of a patient God who loves and shapes you, Here I Am Again, Lord offers solid reassurance and motivation to significantly encourage you in your walk with Christ.
