Customer Reviews:
Loved this book.......2006-05-18
I've worked as a tv reporter for nearly 21 years...16 years in Portland, Oregon. This is by far one of the very best books I've read on the art of writing for tv news. I found it useful after reading the very first page. Tompkins uses clear, concrete examples to illustrate his points which instantly made me a better writer. Its refreshing to think about our craft with new insight on the purpose and focus of each story. I've urged all the producers and reporters in our newsroom to get and read this!
Aim for the Heart is a first-rate "How-To " for TV journalists.......2005-08-12
Al Tompkins scores with a practical guide to make pictures and words compelling, even for a novice TV reporter.
Probably THE book to read for any up-and-coming reporter..........2005-03-11
Mr. Tompkins' book was the reason I got my first job coming out of college. The first two stories I put on my resume tape were heavily influenced by the things I read in 'Write for the ear, shoot for the eye, aim for the heart.'
Al explains things so that you not only understand how to do the things we do, but also why we do the things we do. I still keep the book on my desk, and whenever my reporting gets into a rut, I haul out Al's book and re-read it. My next few stories are always better than my last few stories.
Great teaching tool.......2004-07-14
I purchased this book to help teach high school students how to write for broadcast, and the lessons Tompkins gives are valuable for students and professionals. Tompkins shows the process behind the writing and the factors a reporter should consider, such as when less writing is more. The book is funny, entertaining, and touching at the same time. He gives many specific examples, including exerpts from scripts, that show the detail and the planning behind the writing. It changes the viewer's perspective on the television news, and it certainly could help professionals refine their writing for broadcast.
Need more people to read books like this.......2004-04-23
Al Tompkins just gave a great presentation at RTNDA on how to find information on the internet. The seminar was filled with humor, insight, and just plain useful information. This book has a similar feel, like advice from someone who wants you to succeed. If a lot of young people read this book (along with some older journalists), perhaps journalism won't be in quite the spot it finds itself in.
Customer Reviews:
By all means, read it in a public place.......2007-05-23
What can I possibly add to what has been said by the other reviewers? This book is short in length and long in content. *EVERYBODY* whom I know and who has read the book has claimed to have laughed out loud while reading it in a public place. That's 5 people, myself included. Years after reading it, I still recall with great amusement the stories about James' alter ego, the Flash of Lightning. And although this is a book about James, it also is a subtle homage to his mother, or at least it read that way to me. Such is James' command of language, he can turn his experiences into everyone's experiences, even if you haven't lived through similar situations. A wonderful read.
Heroic recollection of an Australian childhood .......2004-10-25
"Unreliable Memoirs" is Clive James' description of his upbringing in a Sydney suburb lasting up to the time of his university education. I was expecting it to be funny but wasn't quite prepared for the raw emotion and literary skill displayed on virtually every page.
To me this is the most impressive of James' autobiographical writing. He has a gift for describing childhood and a kind of relentless honesty which is hilarious and provides something of a turbulent rollercoaster ride for the reader, as he describes the trauma of being a single child to a single parent in the aftermath of the Second World War.
I felt a little left behind by many of the historical and literary references James makes but this is more than made up for by the relish with which he uses the English language. For example, he describes a friend's mother giving him buttered bread covered with hundreds and thousands as like "eating a slice of powdered rainbow".
"Unreliable Memoirs" made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end - I wish I had read it years ago.
Don't read while drinking anything hot.......2004-07-18
One of the funniest books you'll ever read. Especially recommended for anyone who has ever been a kid, Australian, in love, in lust, in trouble, at university or has had a head that sticks out at the back.
old age . I never thought the cornflakes would leave me ........2002-10-16
For those of you who have visited Australia in recent years , it may come as a shock to you that Clive James was the man who discoverd it . Jumping from captain Cooks ship ,when the hostile crew had threatened to eat him if he risked another witism . He discovered that the land was free from parking meters . " Well boil mi billy can , cobbers , this is the place for me " . So young clive tried his hand at acting, but was disillusioned ,when James coburn was cast as the aussie in the great escape . " He sounds more real than you Clive " . "Strewth i'll have a lash at journalism " . The rest is history . A raft back to blighty . A year as an assistant to clark kent , then unexpected fame as a latex puppet on spitting image . Its all here the unreliable memoirs, of the boy from Melbourne ,The land bought by Batman .
Don't read this in a public place!.......2000-03-31
This would have to be the best offering from Clive James that I have read. His acerbic wit makes for great reading. I found this text on a bookshelf in a beach holiday house and was immediately captivated. I lost count of the amount of times that I not only laughed out loud, I snorted with appreciation and had to wipe tears from my eyes (much to the consternation of those around me) He captures the innocence of childhood with fleeting glimpses of maturity like no one has before, proving that he is not just a television presenter but a Rhodes Scholar to boot. If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. It would be a shame to tell you more because this is a book that just has to be read to be believed!
Book Description
This book describes the major aesthetic image elementslight and color, space, time-motion, and soundand how they are used in television and film. Zettls comprehensive coverage of aesthetic theory and his inclusion of effective visuals and examples place this text in a class by itself.

The book is totally new and under very good condition, and the dilievery time is much earlier than i expected.
Best in field.......2004-12-28
This text thoroughly explains the intricacies of applied media asthetics in a concise and completely accessible way. It is a well organizied text that ehances its presentation through the use of many illustrations. I believe that this is the best text on the subject and that it has been since its first edtion.
motion graphics professor.......2002-06-04
"Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book."
I would disagree with the above review. Only by learning WHY first, can we learn HOW later. This book is more than a cookie cutter approach to film and video. If you want to "click and drag" your way through an editing program, then true, this book is not for you. Add this to your collection if you want a book that teaches how to see and create film. Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics has staying power.
Fundamental book on the theory of the moving image.......2001-05-20
This was the assigned textbook for my digital video 2 class, and it is simply wonderful. Zettl is a very knowledgable man on the subject of creating images for film, video, and even new media. (Zettl's text Video Basics 3 was used in my digital video 1 class as well) This book lays a solid foundation for the theory behind how and why the viewer perceives the moving image, and how the filmmaker and video producer can create more pleasing and coherent productions.
While the biggest complaint I've heard about this book is it's over-reliance on theory, it still does a good job of contextualizing theory into practical application. Thus the title of the book: APPLIED Media Aesthetics. Although I haven't read any of Eisentien's theories behind filmmaking, I suspect that Zettl's treatment would compete rather well, and is probably more accessible for a modern reader.
This book covers all the bases from color and light, time and space and structuring audio to image. Zettl succintcly deconstructs the intelligent mind behind the images and sound of our cultures film and television productions.
Sight, Sound, Motion: Applied Media Aesthetics explains the WHY of film and video production. If you're looking for HOW then turn to another book.
The Filmmaker's Bible of Aesthetics or What Works and Why.......2000-11-04
This is probably the most important textbook a film production student can have on his/her shelf. NOT for how to work with actors or how to light a scene, but for understanding the underlying reasons of why things work due to our learned aesthetics and Western sensibilities.
Professor Herbert Zettl has written the most concise manual on why we has film viewers percieve things the way we do. He explains in detail (and layman's terms) how our aesthetics have been formed to interpret the dynamic medium of film and television.
How editing of action from shot to shot creates the illusion of continuous motion. How stagelines work so not to give the effect that your actor is jumping around from one side of the scene to the other. How to crop your shot BETWEEN the bodies natural cut-off points (i.e. neck, elbow, waist) to prevent the actor from looking like a disembodied head or torso.
This book is cover-to-cover insights into what we as viewers take for granted when we watch a good filmmaker's work, but may not consider when faced with the daunting task of mounting a film production and the on-set "reality" problems that dominate the filmmaker's mind when shooting a film.
I first read this book when I was in film school twenty years ago. Since then I have directed many professional film productions and I still review it before starting a new one to refresh myself.
Just as Syd Field's book "Screenplay" is the bible for screenwriting, "Sight Sound Motion" is the bible on understanding what works in film/video and why.

Book Description
Herbert Zettl draws on his expertise and field experience to bring you the new edition of VIDEO BASICS, the handiest and most authoritative, current, and technically accurate student guide to video production. Meeting the need for a briefer book, this text distills comprehensive video instruction so that it can be covered in a single semester. The book moves students from video concepts and processes to production tools and techniques, and finally, to the production environment (studio and field, inside and outside) and its effects. A more conceptual framework leads the student from the idea (what to create) to the image (how to create) on video.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Start.......2006-03-02
This book is a must for anyone getting into video production. Full of basic information that is conveyed in an intuitive and concise way, plus there is plenty of advanced knowledge to keep you referring back for years to come. Definitely a staple for all video people.
Very Good.......2004-01-24
My boss told me to buy this book, and it is one of the best available book.
great book!!.......2002-08-09
i am an electronic media communications major and this book has been used for a number of years in my school's communications program. video basics 3 has everything you need to know and everything is explained in much detail, yet not too complicated. there are great illustrations throughout the book that are very helpful as well.
i bought this book used from my campus bookstore and i gotta wonder, why would someone return this book at the end of the semester? i still have mine and have re-read it through quite a few times, most definately something worth holding on to!
Superlative.......2002-04-24
This book gives a broad overview of the field of video. It is intended as a textbook for students in a university video course, however, the information that it contains will be valuable for anyone interested in improving their video skills, especially in professional contexts. Since the book is a textbook, each chapter begins with a list of key terms and definitions, and key concepts are highlighted in the text and repeated at the end of the chapter. Each chapter also contains instructions for a lesson in Zettl's Video Lab on CD (not included). The book covers many topics related to professional video production, including the video production process, the video team, video cameras, lighting, sound, editing, and the studio. I found the language to be very straightforward and highly informative.
Bad Copies.......2002-01-30
My copy of the book did not have chapters 3 and 4. I had a chapters 1 and 2 repeated. Check your copy of the book.

Customer Reviews:
Making complex issues clear.......2004-12-24
This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.
The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.
Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Behind the Scenes of Media Programming.......2006-01-28
This is a very solid job at describing a constantly moving target. The authors (the first and third are at California State University-Fullerton, while Brian Gross teaches out in Jakarta and has enjoyed extensive experience in all three media) help to bring ever more important Internet content into the media mainstream with their treatment. Chapters cover the history of programming in all three services (and related areas such as video games), sources of television programming, sources of radio and Internet content, development of content for each of the three, testing of audience reactions, elements of successful programming, factors influencing television programming, factors impacting radio and Internet content, scheduling strategies for each of these services, program evaluation, changing and canceling programs, and ethical issues. The book is more descriptive than critical in approach, and helps readers get behind the scenes to better understand the players and process.

'An Agent Tells All' is an uncensored look at the business of acting from the perspective of a working Hollywood agent. There is no other book on the market written by someone who is currently employed as an agent.
In a frank and humorous tone, Tony Martinez lays out a detailed business plan to help actors achieve their goals. Some of the topics covered include:
Tools of the Trade
The Right Way to Get an Agent
How a Meeting Can Go Horribly Wrong
The Secret to Being a Good Client
Do You Really Need A Manager?
The Truth About Pilot Season
It's time to stop listening to all the wrong people. 'An Agent Tells All' is the one book you need to take charge of your acting career.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful information.......2007-08-28
I did a monologue in front of Tony Martinez at TVI Actors Studio, and he was generous enough to tell me what did and didn't work. His book just as helpful, only laced with his terrific sense of humor. I would say this is a must have for any actor and would probably be helpful for managers and workers in corporate America.
All actors can use this information.......2006-07-15
I recently re-entered the entertainment industry, Hollywood, to be specific, and I thought of buying this book. I had gotten an e-mail for it about one year earlier and I had wanted to buy it then. Upon reading this book, I began to understand things I had always wanted to have an inside scoop on when I was in the industry before. Tony Martinez may not give ALL the inside information on agents and their dealings, but he gives enough of a "bigger" picture to give an actor a leg up on what an agent wants and how the two can best work together. I think that Mr. Martinez genuinely cares for actors and that it shows in the way he has written the book - concisely, the content of the book - broad-ranging and specific examples, and how he delivers his truth as an agent - straight. I thank him for having the foresight to do it and though he may be short-sighted in some of his stories about his clients and who needs who most, I think that he delivers what he says he will on the back cover.
Must Have for Actors!.......2006-07-13
I m an actor in L.A. and without a doubt this is the best material available on the actor/agent relationship available. Everything you could ever care to know is in this book and its all told in a funny highly readable manner. Its an absolute must have and one of the true jewels I have in all my books on the business of acting. Most of em are the same, and much of those are garbage, but this one simply cant be missed.
Great insider info!.......2006-03-28
Many actors are in the dark when it comes to what an agent expects of them as a client. Well, not if they've read this book! Tony Martinez tells it like it is. Especially helpful is his chapter on what to do when you get that "all important meeting" with a potential agent. This book will definitely help you be ready when the phone rings.
An absolute neccessity for actors.......2006-01-12
This could be the most useful and concise of all the books I have on the acting business. I have just finished reading it the second time and must say that I still find it enjoyable and informative. It's an easy read with decent sized text and best of all... it doesn't take six months to plod through. If you are looking for a tome on everything acting, including places to walk your dog, look elsewhere. A lot of information without a lot of fluff, and from the pen (or word-processor) of someone who IS an agent as opposed to an ex-wanna-be actor who thought they might learn a little about the business by asking some questions of a few agents. It also gives you the perspective of the least understood job in this business. The last Chapter should be printed and hung on the wall of anyone aspiring to be a professional actor.
This should be the first acting business book you read. ...And next time you see your agent, give her/him a hug and tell them how much you appreciate them.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Text.......2007-01-11
This is an excellent reference text for TV production students. I use this in my classes. The problem is it is very expensive and it is missing some key framing concepts (the rule of thirds). It can also be redundant at times. As a whole though it is an excellent text.
The Best television production textbook ever!!!!.......2005-08-03
This textbook is a truly fantastic textbook if you want to learn about television production. There are no other textbooks like it.....it literally is the bible for all television production students. I have done several internships in the field of television and this textbook has covered a lot of what I have done in these internships. Its amazing how much of what I have read and seen in this textbook are also things that I worked with in my internships. It's simply the best textbook out there for television production students!!! Look into other works by Herbert Zettl, he is the Sigmund Freud of the television world!

Customer Reviews:
Great book for better understanding the new media world.......2007-03-20
I was very pleased with the vast wealth of information provided in this book. It was easy to understand and covered all aspects of the state of the media world!
Television Disrupted.......2007-02-19
This is an excellent overview of all aspects of the television industry and what it is morphing into. I can see this being invaluable to anyone already directly involved in, or on the periphery of this industry.
It is educational as well for those not working in the business, or those looking to invest in the emerging technologies.
TV disrupted is the most intelligent book on current and future TV biz.......2007-02-11
Television Disrupted is an excellent book, well written and intelligently describing a wide range of complex topics surrounding traditional TV and internet delivered video. It does a particularly good job in describing the recent changes and potential future directions of the television industry.
Working within the software industry serving traditional television, people have frequently asked me what they can read to build their knowledge of the TV business. Historically, this has been a tough question to answer as there have been a few discrete magazine articles that were interesting, but I was unware of any books that were current, accurate, or made sense about the future of TV. Television Disrupted has solved this dilema by providing a great overview of the historical television industry as well as the massive changes that are pending as the television business takes advantage of the opportunities provided by internet delivered video.
Must Read for Media Execs.......2006-12-06
This book is a must read for those navigating the changing waters of the media industry. It contains a comprehensive industry overview, insightful analysis of current trends, thought-provoking predictions....and, it's an interesting and entertaining read as well.
Finally!.......2006-09-15
Finally a book about the future of media from someone intimately familiar with its past and present. Palmer has a unique perspective as both an extraordinary successful creative, and an extremely savvy businessman. The insights of his book were earned by doing, not learned by reading, and it distinguishes his perspective from nearly every other.
