Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

One of the 'Must Have' Suppliments.......2007-01-14

D&D today is great. I'm a geek from way back and have ranted and raved or applauded many versions of this game. The current one is...overall...the best. It's by no means flawless but they give it depth while trying to maintain a basic simplicity. For the most part, they succeed. Many of the suppliments of the core game however are definitely wanting. One gets the impression that no editor bothered to pay attention to see if it maintains the same balance as the other suppliments, much less the core game. There are some gems however that just add even more colour to the game overall. The Complete Warrior is one of those gems. Chock full of prestige classes and a few full 1-20 classes, as well as some interesting feats and additional infortmation...it is, as a whole, very useful and fun (the Swashbuckler and Samurai classes are definitely favourites of mine now). Not all of the prestige classes hit the mark but more do than do not. I would not recommend all of the suppliments but this one just happens to be a must for the serious gamer.

Here is the deal, there is a lot of material providing many, many options in this book. That being said, most of it is not incredibly "imaginative". For example, a PC in one of my campaigns wanted to play a samurai type character so using some of the guidelines in the DM's guide we constructed him as a standard fighter with a few extra touches (early access to Weapon Specialization, intimidate as a class skill etc...) and a few penalties (fewer bonus feats, required alginment, allegiance to a lord etc...). My point here, is that as far as the core classes, prestige classes and most of the other stuff in this book, a bit of imagination, some compromise, and a few free hours will let you build the whole volume from scratch without having to shell out the money and at the same time, giving you quite the sense of accomplishment. Take the advice of the DM's guide

What I love most about the complete series is that it gives you tons of options. There is no better guide to fighters and warriour options for all classes than this guide.

You have to love the new classes presented in this suppliment. The Samurai at first seems a little out of place in a Greyhawk-ish setting, but this warriour with a heart of gold really fits in any campaign. The Swashbuckler is a favorite class of most powergamers, and is becoming a favorite class of mine weather they be robin hood or cap'n jack sparrow.

The variant paladin and ranger classes are too sweet. I use them all the time with my PCs. These variant class make the ranger more like the hard core woodsman like Strider from LOTR, and the variant Paladin makes them more like the knights of the old code.

The PRCs in this guide are very essential. You simply have to love the Cavalier and Ronin prestige class. The drunken master is a real step in the right direction for the monk, a natural progression for any dedicated holy man of the fist.

The feats provided in this book should be considered core. With such feats as destructive rage, arcane strike, and other great options, you really can't miss this section. The spells are a welcome addition as well.

The sections on fantasy warfare are a must read for any DM wanting to improve their game. One road block I've had over the years as a dm is sporting combat, and this guide has a real nice section on just that subject.

I could go on and on about this great book. In short, every good Dnder should own the complete series. There are so many great options in this book, and is a favored addition to my library.

I din't like it, but you might........2005-11-28

This book is not a DM's book. With the exception of a few tatical feats, and some new weapons, this book, with the majority of its pages detailing new prestige classes, is not a book that was meant to ever enter the hands of a DM. I saw one feat in here I liked, and I payed 25 dollars for the privlige to look at it. In short, if your a DM, dont buy the book, if your a character who is big on fighters, go ahead. But be warned, some of the prestige classes are hopelessly stupid. The Eye of Gruumsh is the prime example, its abilities are just wierd, not to mention bad, and although I rarely judge a class by its portrait, I must say that is without question, the ugliest D and D picture I have ever seen. The new base classes are kind of repetitive, like a pretty lame remake of the Samurai. A hint;if your buying the book so you can use that class, don't, buy Oriental Adventures, save money, and end up with a better class. Some things appeal to my PC side though, like the Spellsword, which offers the best spellcaster/fighter mix I've seen in a long time. And then there's the Hulking Hurler, the most uber chea class I have EVER seen. If my PCs ever even try to get me to let them use this class I swear I will write an angry letter to Wizards of the Coast, telling them to stop making classes that can be used to defeat the purpose of arena deuling of even normal D+D. Still the book fails to really deliver anything important, not overly recomended.

Serious historical treatment of Koryu Jujutsu.......2006-01-03

Many are the books available on jujutsu, however few truly shed any light on the real roots of the art and lineages from which they came. Serge Mol does an outstanding job in this.

The book is also put together beautifully by Kodansha and with excellent quality photographs, many of the current headmasters of the traditional jujutsu ryu performing techniques, to give the reader a sampling of what the arts look like.

When Koryu books first started publishing their books there was an endorsement which read something to the effect that the Skosses were continuing the work of Don Draeger. This may be so but Serge Mol's text is much more representative of Draeger's approach; both historical research and new information, gleaned first hand, from personal research in Japan. The Skoss books are really collections of essays by long time Western Koryu practitioners. Mol seeks rather to provide us with a very comprehensive historical text and succeeds brilliantly in this.

Outstanding for study but not so much application.......2004-11-10

This is one of those books that belongs in every serious martial artists libraries. It is not a "how-to" beginners guide,even though it demonstrates the proper techniques; if you are searching for a guide to martial arts without the dojo this is not for you. However, if you are already practicing martial arts and wish to find every in-depth and quality source of reference to expand your knowledge of the martial arts, their origins, and the spirit that is within them, then this book is top of the line and a must have. This book will intrigue anyone eager to just learn a little more...or maybe alot more, depending on the person. It is VERY high quality with many photos (mostly b&w). It is well written, and very clear in most areas. I would think it to be fairly confusing to the novice, who has little or no in-depth knowledge of Japanese martial arts however, because it traces the lineages of the main Japanese styles to their roots. But that is what this book is about: studying the techniques as they began, and following their evolution. Basically, I find this book to be an outstanding addition to my library, in a class of its own; but once again it is not the "master book of martial arts", but the ideal addition to the ones you may already have of similar subjects. Serge Mol is an outstanding writer and a very qualified authority on the subject.

Not Very Good.......2004-04-14

To be honest, I bought this book in the United States when it first came out. I read it and my reaction was less than stellar. If I had not been exposed to other far better writings offered up by say, Koryu Books (ie Koryu Bujutsu) I would have thought it was great and would have been satisfied with my purchase and choice of reading material. However, anyone buying this book with serious intentions to study koryu is better off not wasting money.

On the plus side, there are nice pictures and at least it's in English!

Excellent history on Japan's Fighting arts........2004-03-14

In general, the West was introduced to oriental martial arts through Kano's judo, followed by karate. Many literature on karate trace its origins to Okinawa, and from there, to China. So many believe China, with its fabled Shaolin temple(s), to be the origin of most of the oriental martial arts.

This detailed and very well researched book gives a different perspective. It shows that Japan had its own schools of martial arts, virtually independent of foreign influence.

The book lumps these arts under the general term, "jujutsu" -- although it also gives various origins, synonyms and explanations of this word.

The methods in jujutsu were developments of the battlefield of those times. Armor-clad warriors faced each other, first from a distance using bows and arrows, then coming closer to use swords and later, grappling techniques.

As such, the arts included everything that was feasible for those times and battle conditions: use of various weapons, techniques against armor clad opponents, even techniques of tying up captured enemies. All that in addition to what most of the world knows of oriental fighting arts: striking and grappling technics.

Some "revelations" from the book which may surprise many modern day martial artists (like myself):

1. "Kenpo" is not a translation of the Chinese "kung fu" or "chuan fa" as many are made to believe. The term was long used in ancient jujutsu schools in times probably ante-dating known Shaolin temples.

2. "Judo" is not a word originally coined by Jigoro Kano. This term, too, was used long before Kano was even born and was even used in names of certain schools (ryuha).

While each of the above just had a sentence or two in the book, it shows the depth of the research of this book. There are a lot of such "revelations."

The book is, first and foremost, a history book. It shows the development of Japanese fighting arts in the time before the relatively peaceful Meiji period -- the time when techniques really meant life or death to the warrior in the battlefield. The various schools are presented, their origins, developments, notable characteristics, and lineage traced to as near the present as possible.

Martial artists looking for techniques would only be treated to a sampling. The illustrations of techniques were more for clearer understanding of particular schools, or even words, rather than being a "how-to" presentation.

In this regard, the title may be considered deceptive. The "complete"-ness of the book is only as far as history goes, not on technique presentation.

Another "fault" of the title is that it gives the impression that "Koryu Jujutsu" is a particular style or school of jujutsu, when actually, "koryu" simply means classical, or traditional. This is a problem to one who does not know Japanese. But this is an English book and the problem should have been addressed right on the cover, and not several pages later in the Introduction.

Something else about the title: It could give one the impression that it deals with all arts, and this is even reinforced by the subtitle. But the book only deals with the schools it considers jujutsu, and only those that originated before the Meiji period. While this is explained as one reads the book, the title could be misleading.

This enumeration of the problems I had with the title does not decrease the value of the book in any way. It is an excellent book. But the buyer must know what to expect out of it.

More than half of the book (the latter half) is devoted to the origins and lineage of the schools. As such, it would be boring for those not interested in such topics. However, there are some interesting bits of information scattered here and there among the discussion, such as stories about certain masters and students, both mythical and factual. The author even tries to resolve some controversies in certain stories.

The first half of the book is devoted to very revealing historical backgrounds, terminology and definitions, weapons, and presentation of mythical as well as actual origins of schools.

I would have preferred that the author stuck to English terms. In the book, a Japanese term is given with English translation(s) in parenthesis. And then, for the rest of the book, only the Japanese term is used. So you should remember the English meanings of all those terms as you go through the rest of the book.

I would have preferred the opposite: use the English, with the Japanese term(s) in parenthesis. Or better yet, have a glossary for all those terms! (it doesn't)

Overall, the book is an excellent work on the history of jujutsu.

Excellent for scholarly study.......2003-06-23

I recently used this book heavily in writing a paper on martial arts for a graduate course in the culture of Japan. This book is a gem in the rough when it comes to intelligent books on the subject of martial arts. Although the author is a practitioner of the art, this is not an instructional manual. It is very intelligently written. The author uses a lot of primary sources, as well as his own extensive experiences, to teach the reader a lot about the classical martial arts of Japan. It painted a picture of feudal Japan that is interesting for its violent yet honorable culture and much more complex than what is often painted in other books and media. There was a lot more to the life of the samurai than just the sword and, although they lived to a high moral code, their combat was quite fierce. I think this is a great read for one interested in Japanese culture and history, as well as one interested in martial arts.

A forgotten master of adventure.......2007-02-06

When your fans include Robert E. Howard, David Drake and SM Stirling, you must be doing something right. Such is the case with Harold Lamb. In this second volume of Lamb's "Cossack" adventures, the stories get better and better as you progress through the book. Considering that the first tale is excellent, you can't go wrong buying this book. If you are a fan of swashbuckling adventure, you owe it to yourself to check out Harold Lamb.

Very, very good........2006-09-27

I bought this book (and the companion volume) after reading some of Lamb's work in the 'Flashing Swords' ezine and anthology from Pitch-Black Press (Sages and Swords). I'd never heard of Lamb before--and now I've read his work, I'm stumped if I know why that is. Everything that's good about adventure fiction is in this book: strong and cunning protagonists, treacherous villains, and exotic locales, and all written in a clean and fast-paced prose style I wish I could emulate.

I read the whole thing in a week, then read the other volume straight after. When I finished, I went back and read them again.

My only caveat about the books has nothing to do with the stories, but the covers. The stock used for the covers is a little thin, and it warps badly if it gets damp. If you do buy a copy (and you should), then keep the cover away from water, otherwise it will curl and start to come apart.

If you're at all interested in adventure fiction, you should buy this book and any others by Lamb you can. Really, they're very, very good.

Great book,but could have been more extensive.......2007-05-19

Being that I own the Xena guide written by Robert Weisbrot,I wasn't sure what to expect from this one. What I got was a book that was not as extensive as it should have been. The individual episode summaries should have been more detailed than they were. If Weisbrot had written this one,no doubt they would have been. However,I did enjoy reading about the final four seasons,and for that I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

It's been two years since the series came to a close and ended it's shooting, and we finally have a complete illustrated companion to go along with it all.
With all the time we spent anticipating this book, I believe that it left a bit to be desired. The author of the book either did not do his or her homework very well or did not pay too much attention to detail when the episode guide was written. Each episode review was only three or four lines long, and there were a few mistakes on the episodes scattered throughout. IE-In One Against an Army, Gabrielle was shot by an arrow BEFORE Xena took refuge in the armory. This was actually a rather large point in the plot of the story, but the book states that Xena went to the armory and then Gabrielle was shot. For the episode "Many Happy Returns" the book explains that Xena and Gabrielle enlisted Aphrodite's help to help Genia "enjoy worldly pleasures." Weren't they trying to teach her to live her own life? You may like the episode guide better than I did if you aren't so picky, but I definitely recommend online fan written episode guides over the one in this book. They are usually more in depth and more accurate.
The rest of the book was alright. It has the genesis of Xena, a production history, an episode guide (both for the series and when Xena would guest star on Hercules), character reviews, a behind the scenes look at costumes, makeup, stunts and special effects, Xena's journeys across the globe, a Greek Mythology encyclopedia to help you keep the characters straight, and even a chapter just for the fans of the show. I've been a very avid Xena fan and collector since Xena was first on Hercules in 1994, and if you're like me then you've seen and read all of this before (not to mention having already known all of the information from having memorized every detail of every episode of the show *big grin*). It's nice to have all this in one book, but it's not anything new or exciting to those that have been fans all along. BUT it is one of those things that every xenite should have. I recommend it to all Xena fans, but with the warning of not to have your expectations set too high and the advice that almost everything (if not everything) from this book can be found online.
