Absolutely beautiful.......2007-07-22
The pictures are beautiful, varied, and amazing. Looking at them I felt the wonder of being a human in the universe. This is completely sappy as a review, I know, but the photos are of wonderful things, most of which you can't see any other way than in a photo (because they would require special microscopes or telescopes or other equipment or an unusual place to stand to take the picture).
The book makes a good gift too.
Revealing scientific education for all.......2007-04-05
This is a superb book. I'm 73 with a scientific background and still very active in my field. The book has also been devoured by my 3 teenage grandchildren. They have been fascinated. The photographs are outstanding. The brief text for each picture is well written, succinct, relevant, interesting and scientifically accurate. I found the introduction stimulating and thought provoking. It's a great book. I'm glad I found it.
Amazing cofee table book!.......2006-02-07
This is a facinating book that both my husband and I could not put down. Highly recommended.
Heaven and Earth - What a fantastic book.......2005-08-20
This book contains one of the best set of images I have ever seen. There are pictures of different subjects on a whole variety of scales and colours, which are fantastic design sources for many arty/crafty people who lack inspiration for various projects. Some images are unidentifyable and are impossible to understand without reading the blurbs - I spent a while guessing what some of the pictures were & quite often got them completely wrong. It's one of those books which make you realise that you are glad that you cannot see to microscopic levels, especially of bedbugs & flies etc..! Well worth getting & some amazing photography.
Awesome book, Buy the hardcover.......2005-05-15
I bought this book for my wife, and the pictures are amazing. You really can't go wrong with something this fantastic. The biggest problem is the binding is garbage - hence the 4 stars - on the paperback. After looking through it ONCE, it is already falling apart. Worth the extra couple of bucks for the hardcover.
Book Description
Fifty-five degrees 59 minutes South by 67 degrees 16 minutes West: Cape Horn-a buttressed pyramid of crumbly rock situated at the very bottom of South America-is a place of forlorn and foreboding beauty that has captured the dark imaginations of explorers and writers from Francis Drake to Joseph Conrad. For centuries, the small stretch of water between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula was the only gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It's a place where the storms are bigger, the winds stronger, and the seas rougher than anywhere else on earth.
Dallas Murphy has always been sea-struck. In Rounding the Horn he undertakes the ultimate maritime rite of passage, and brings the reader along for a thrilling, exuberant tour. Weaving together stories of his own nautical adventures with long-lost tales of those who braved the Cape before him-from Spanish missionaries to Captain Cook-and interspersing them with breathtaking descriptions of the surrounding wilderness, Murphy has crafted an immensely enjoyable read.

A Joy To Read.......2007-04-17
We are faced with so many books on problems - whether it's Iraq. or a neurotic hero of heroine trying to make the best of a bad situation, or how to make (or save) a buck or any one of a thousand problems which help to sell books - it's a joy to read a book like this where a very literate author sits back and tells us in excellent and descriptive prose a fascinating story about Cape Horn and its environs, its geography, what it's like there, its history, its native people and how it is to sail a small boat in these stormy rockbound deceptive dangerous Patagonian waters.
I don't know how I found it, but I had read a part of it when it was first published and had put it down for some reason. Then, just the other day, I picked it off the shelf and read it. Finished it last night and now I can't wait to tell you to go out and buy it and read it too. It's a delight. You'll freeze in the sleet and wind of Cape Horn weather. You'll be right there with the explorers who found a passage there and then you'll see and feel the worst with the resolute skippers who drove their ships into the teeth of the worst weather in the world to succeed or perish in an attempt at transit. If you're really interested it's got a great bibliography too. Go get it and read it. No kidding. Unless you're some kind of a wimp you'll love it!
Zephyrs and lulls.......2007-02-28
With the wind in its sails, this book glides like a clipper ship. Otherwise, in sailor terminology, it can be the doldrums.
The author took it upon himself to experience firsthand the hardships and rigors of Cape Horn and then interweave these wanderings with its history, flora/fauna, climate and geography.
I found the historical accounts of Magellan, Drake, Darwin and many others in this harsh environment extremely fascinating. Especially gripping and understandably predictable, were the numerous failed attempts of missionaries to establish themselves amongst the indigenous people.
His own meanderings, although descriptive and worthy, are somewhat overplayed and a disappointment after such colorful portrayals of past explorers and events.
Overall a good read of a very unusual and mysterious geographical region.
Wonderful book........2006-04-06
This is a wonderful book. Dallas Murphy weaves the history of Western contact with the strange and wonderful world at the bottom of South America, the intriguing story of its aboriginial inhabitants, and his own sailing experiences there with consummate skill. His narrative style is a delight. As a reviewer in the Seattle Times put it: "I can't remember the last time I had so much fun reading, curling up comfortably for such an articulate adventure."
A very satisfying survey.......2006-03-21
This is a hard book to categorize, as it is equal parts geography, history, meteorology, and oceanography. Although none of these parts was exceptional, they added up to a very engaging survey of the southernmost part of South America.
The narrative alternates between the author's own short expedition through Tierra del Fuego and accounts of discovery, exploration, and feats of seafaring. Thankfully, the author doesn't try to overdramatize his own trip and as a result creates a nice contrast between his peaceful exploration of the area and the tumultuous history of natives, explorers and missionaries. I always feel that the danger of a book like this is that the author tries to take center stage and tell "his story," but that doesn't happen here. Instead, the author shares enough of his knowledge about Cape Horn and seafaring that the reader understands why he is so fascinated by seeing these places in person. The overall sense of balance to the book, and the wealth of information about an undernoticed area of the world, made this a very satisfying read.
I would recommend this book for those who liked Simon Winchester's Krakatoa, and vice versa.
An excellent literary voyage.......2006-02-11
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite a good read. I am very glad that the author didn't dwell too much on his personal voyage as it was somewhat uneventful. While interesting and informtative, I did not buy the book with the expectation it would be a travelogue; and it's not.
Instead, the book is rich with insightful and entertaining descriptions of the early explorers encounters with the climate, topography and indigenous people of that time. Covering everything from the earliest Spanish explorers to the present day territorial conflicts, he also includes wrongheaded missionaries and intriguing eyewitness accounts from clipper ship and windjammer voyages.
The history of the Yaghan natives such as the "adopted" Jemmy Button and "Fuegia Basket" was wonderfully detailed for the small amount of time spent on them. The author is a keen observer of things many of us would overlook or fail to appreciate properly. This book is definitely a page turner, as the author seques from his present situations to wonderfully told sea stories.
Anyone who enjoys arcane history and anything to do with sailing or ocean adventures should enjoy this tremendously. Highly recommended.

Where'd Pascal go?.......2006-11-01
I LOVE this series...Fearless was my favorite book series until it ended - and I thought it couldn't get any better until Pascal got me hooked onto this. So here's my question...where the heck did she go? I can't find when the next book will be out, and I can't find any info about it. She wouldn't just stop it there and leave us hanging, would she? I'll be VERY sad...if anyone knows anything about the next book, please post and share!
excellent read.......2006-07-04
ok, it took me a little longer to read this book as i think the next fearless book won't be out to about august , so i want to savour this fantastic series of books!
anyway gaia's life is an emotional rollercoaster and her emotions and trust will be tested to it's limits in this book, expect a unexpected death and a betrayal by someone close to gaia again, and at last there's something that happens at the end of the book that a lot of us fearless reader's have been waiting for!
don't give up on this series, i was a late comer ,i only started reading the books earlier this year and i have now read every single fearless book thats been releashed including this one!
francine pascal is an excellent writer!
Great Ending!.......2006-06-13
Ok, I've been reading these Fearless books since they came out when I was 10 (so like 7 years). I've read every single one of these great books. This one was totally awesome! Ok, so it was pretty sad cuz someone died, but i didn't like the person anyway so whatever. But at the end something great happened that I've been waiting to happen since these FBI books came out! yay! so read it just to find out what happens at the very end!
Bummer..........2006-06-13
This is the lastest in the Fearless FBI series.
I have to say, without giving much away, that it's so sad what Gaia had to go through yet again. Having been deceived by another best friend and having to have lost one as well. You'd think that the author Francone Pascal would let Gaia live a little bit of normal happy life at some point... but that's not the case. I hope someday it's written that she can have the life she craves.

A Highly Enjoyable Look at a World Few Experience.......2001-08-04
I enjoyed reading this book as it was a quick read and had a lot of interesting stories, many of which went from one or two paragraphs to one or two pages.
The book really provided a unique look at what goes on behind the neon wrapped doors of an exotic dance club. From the emotional problems to drugs to friendships, it's all in here.
Quite enjoyable.

Great book - impressive author.......2000-09-27
An good and insightful book into the life of this impressive woman. A dancer and artist in the body of a stripper. I met the author in a San Francisco club, and she talked me into buying her book. I'm glad I did.
strippers actually do speak!.......2000-07-22
She's unbelievable witty! I had to put the book down several times to just guffaw. I love it that the brains appear from behind the bimbo mask. What a warrior this woman is. What a world to live in.
How a long-legged beauty views the job, boyfriends, life........1999-07-15
I've been watched, talked to, and occasionally dated strippers for twenty years, but I still had a lot of questions in my mind. Like many girls in this field, she is independant and practical in many ways, while at the same time prone to wasting time involved with guys who were obviously going to let them down. Shay's mainly different in that she has kept a journal, eventually learned from her mistakes, and she occasionally borrows style from, or draws analogy with, elements of classic literature.

You don't need expensive instruments to appreciate the beauty of the night sky, as Bob Berman exuberantly demonstrates in Secrets of the Night Sky. Berman takes you on a tour of the night sky, pointing out its highlights and its history, along with a wealth of practical tips and tricks, such as how to categorize satellites that appear overhead. Secrets of the Night Sky is not only a how-to manual for enjoying the celestial sphere but is also a painless introduction to the science of cosmology. With a flair for analogies, Berman imparts a visceral understanding of the scale of stellar objects. And in case your explorations do lead you to buy a telescope, the book's appendices contain a variety of no-nonsense advice that may save you from getting fleeced.

Customer Reviews:
A great basic astronomy read for the casual observer........2006-01-30
I first read this book when in the Navy stationed in Japan, I would read it on the train to and from Tokyo and Yokosuka. It was light, enjoyable reading about what you can see in the night sky. Now I am reading again to refresh my memory of constellations, stars, Jupiters moons and how to see satellites. My daughter loves stars and I want to refresh my basic knowlege so I can stimulate her curiosity as we view the sights together. I cannot think of a better text to do so. It is a quick read and filled with intersting facts about spacial relationships, space travel and just the magnitude of it all. If there is a down spot it would be the frequent analogies of size and distance which really become meaningless after a point. Still the text will give the lay reader a vocubulary and understanding of the night sky in an easy to read, fun text, what more can you ask for?
Great author........2005-02-24
This book is one of the most informative and entertaining I have ever read. The author provides the information is such a way that you want to keep reading about why there are really more than 24 hours in a day. Anyway, it's a great book, very interesting, very well written. Buy it.
A wonderful book.......2003-09-18
I have been in amateur astronomy for 15 years, and this is one of my favorite books, for beginner or astronomy hobbyist. This is, mercifully, NOT a textbook. You can learn your way around the sky with Raymo's "365 Starry Nights" (also an excellent book), but Berman supplies the humor. The beauty of the night sky is, unfortunatly, a "secret," as few people know anything about it! Let Bob Berman describe the scene up there, get yourself a star chart, and get outdoors!
General knowledge only.......2003-06-14
This book is probably intended for the vast masses that want and look for general information about the universe. The writer indeed contribute a little bit of amazing information about the sizes of stars but many pages are wasted on tidbits which contribute nothing for the science of astronomy. The book is written in light English with not so many words in every page. The diagrams and pictures are of a very low quality and it is very difficult to understand the names of the stars in the diagrams. The pictures are simply disappointing and the paper quality is low as well. The book is as far as possible from a scientific book. Don't come closer to this book if you are after the science of astronomy.
sky at night.......2003-04-12
Very good book for the lovers of sky , especially at night..
beautiful examination and imagination... lovely and kind

A modern-day classic.......2005-04-14
There are three books I read again every year: Baseball Anecdotes by Daniel Okrent and Steve Wulf; Be True to Your School by Bob Greene; and the Starry Room by Fred Schaaf. Only one of them moves me to tears on the very first page. If you have ever stood at the edge of the woods at night, gazed up at the stars, and trembled with reverence and awe, perhaps even fear - Fred Schaaf's prose will not only return you to that sacred moment but sweep you up and into the midst of that very sky. The intimate universe awaits.

Book Description
What admirer of a great Renaissance painting has not wished for the chance to approach it closely and examine each tiny detail? This unique book permits just such a close-up view of some of the most beautiful masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. Using photography taken through a microscope, this book shows details from paintings that would not normally be seen: a gem sparkling on a ringed finger, a minute insect, intricate brushwork, the texture of a painted surface.
Each of the macrophotographs in the book documents around a half-inch section of a Renaissance panel painting, revealing the smallest details in works by Lucas Cranach, Jan van Eyck, Fra Angelico, Raphael, and many others. The complete paintings are shown at the back of the book. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this jewel of a book is an irresistible treasure for every art lover.
