Book Description
ActionScript is the native scripting language of Flash. ActionScript knowledge is essential within the world of Flash design and development, as Flash remains a leading tool for cutting-edge interactive design and development. ActionScript is what gives Flash its power, but with that power comes a certain level of complexity, which can be intimidating. This beginners book, significantly updated since the last edition, covers all of the basics of ActionScript using the latest version of Flash, Flash 8. The skills acquired by working through this book will enable you to move on to more advanced friends of ED books such as Foundation PHP 5 for Flash, Foundation ActionScript Animation or Foundation XML for Flash. This book contains all you need to understand and make use of ActionScript, and to have some fun while learning. The Foundation series teaching style is ideal if youre a non-programmer who wants to learn Flash programming quickly and thoroughly. Customer Reviews:
A Great ActionScript Book By Designers For Designers.......2007-07-24
This is a great book for the designer interested in getting deeper into Flash through ActionScript 2.0. Primarily centered around web-based projects, with the occasional game project, Sham et al. lead the reader through basic programming fundamentals from a designer perspective. The reader is assumed to be mildly frightened by looking at code, but still interested in learing it. I can sympathize that many designers could be in this boat.
The language of the book is very non-technical and it's presented in a light-hearted manner to ease you into some difficult concepts. The authors do a great job of tricking you into getting excited about programming. So if you're a web designer who has always been impressed by what programmers can do, but were a little uncomfortable trying to just jump in on your own, this is THE book for you.
I have two warnings and one critique.
The first warning is that this is a Flash 8 book - hence ActionScript 2.0. The second warning is that almost all the projects in the book are web-based instead of game-based. Now it's Flash, so it kind of comes with the territory, and there is a full chapter devoted to making a game. However, the perfect book for me would be this exact same book, but centered almost completely around game-based projects. If you're strictly looking for that, this book isn't for you. I don't care as much, and there's still a lot to learn, so I don't regret purchasing the book.
My critique is regarding the book-long project where you make a website that uses ActionScript (the Futuremedia site). It's a case study where you can apply some of what you've learned to a "real" project. My problem with it is that you don't seem to learn a whole lot about ActionScripting by going through it. The authors (or whichever individual wrote the project) seem to be really proud of this project - proud in the sense that they like themselves for it - and you can tell by going throug it. Plus, its more content-oriented. There's much more to learn from everything else, so I'm just skipping the project and skimming over it whenever it's time to work on it a little (which isn't a whole lot anyway).
Overall, it's a great book so far (I'm about 1/3 done) and I'd recommend it to anyone who's new to programming and wants to learn it through ActionScript 2.0. Sham has an awesome ability to explain programming to a designer.
Well structured, No boring Jargon and Everything you need in one book........2007-05-13
I am new to actionscript, have watched a few Total Training dvd's, but they don't really go into indepth actionscript. Unless you buy all the dvd's which are expensive.
This book was great. And has given my mind more of an understanding, especially of the process, of programming.
I'm more a graphic designer, who is getting into web design, so if I can go from first page through to the end in 3 weeks and juggle a screaming 2yr old at the same time.....well then anyone can.( I am a stay at home dad!....by the way)
Good to keep for reference. Buy it.
Excellent Beginner ActionScript Guide.......2007-03-19
I was completely foreign to ActionScript before picking up this book. I had previously read one book on understanding the basic flash interface (i.e. using the drawing/tweening tools), but this was my first crack at ActionScript. Getting through this book was very easy. Each chapter is setup in a way that explains a specific topic, runs you through a few examples using what you just learned, and then continues on with an ongoing website project that you develop throughout the book.
Strengths: Writing is clear and concise, and doesn't feel like a programmer wrote the book. The context is a nice mix of theory and hands on practice to keep you interested while your learning some of the more complex topics. The teaching method looks to provide you with skills that you can apply and expand upon quickly, as opposed to just learning some commands and then throwing you out into the wild. The book projects are very well constructed and explained.
Weaknesses: Some of the later chapters advance quickly. I blew through the first 350 pages, but after that had to significantly slow down to fully understand each topic. I also noticed that one or two of the online downloads are missing files for the book project. These are not neccesary if you are writing everything from scratch (correctly), but it did sometimes get in the way of comparing my solutions to the books.
Overall I have been extremely satisfied with this book, and will most likely buy another Foundation guide.
Great Book for Beginner on up ...........2006-12-06
I am a current animation student in California and Flash is one of the tools we are using. While I have developed some proficiency animating in Flash, the scripting tends to turn my brain to mush after a while.
I picked up Foundation Flash 8 to learn some of the basics and have been using Foundation Actionscript for Flash 8 to gradually explore scripting. I am not a programmer but got through the first few chapters easy enough. The second half of the book is somewhat tougher but but filled with interesting chapters -especially the game chapter (chapter 10).
I haven't quite cleared the hurdle of the later chapters, find them more challenging, but I keep the book on my desk to pick at stuff. It is well written and comprehensive. From my perspective as a non-programming 'art head' I'd say it covers beginner to advanced level topics by the end of the book; that's pretty cool because many books seem to be simple rehashings of the product manuals designed to part you from $40-$50 while giving you no new info.
A diamond amongst coal........2006-12-02
As an old UNIX hack I have read quite a few programming manuals, from the original C (Kerninghan & Richie - when it was new!), to the present. Very few, if any, (including the O'Reilly series), have come close to being so informative, easy to read, and enjoyable as the 'ActionScript for Flash 8' book. I consider myself a poor programmer partly because I never found 'print Hello World!' that interesting. In any event, this book has taken me from rank Actionscript beginner to (dare I say it...) semi-advanced! Basically, cannot recommend it highly enough! For me, I enjoy the graphical nature of Actionscript and I am glad I finally found the right book to take me there. I think beginners and experienced Object-Oriented types will get a lot or something from it. Thanks Friends of ED!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and comprehensive!.......2007-09-28
I order this book every term in our small college to teach AutoCad and it is an excellent book. I use this book mostly for teaching AutoCad 2D and it is may be the best book for this purpose in the market. If you are a student wanting to learn AutoCad you should know that the exercises in this book are the best you can find anywhere.
Pretty good..........2007-02-25
This was the recommended text for an Autocad class I'm taking. It seems to have all the essential information. Good for both reference and instruction. The only detraction I've found is the index is poor, doesn't always direct you to the places in the book with the most information about what you're looking for, and the index is where I go first when I'm trying to find a particular thing.

Customer Reviews:
Is This What We are Looking For?.......2002-10-06
The only book that is currently available in the market and focuses on AutoCAD customization is the one written by Mr. Tickoo. The idea of writing such a book is really good, but unfortunately the book is not what readers are looking for.
- It covers some irrelevant topics such as AutoCAD Calculator, Template Files, and Database Connectivity
- The book is old fashioned. It is written for older versions of AutoCAD and not updated for latest versions properly. You can refer to the chapter that covers Slide Shows to get what I mean.
- The book does not cover important topics such as metric-english variaties in AutoCAD
- The chapters discussing Programming languages are superficial and it seems they exist just to increase the size of the book. Please refer to chapters covering VBA and VLISP
Unfortunately there is no other choices for AutoCAD users but if there was a better resource I wouldn't buy this book at all.

Well Done !!!!!!!!! .......2006-11-03
Great reference ! Very Complete, this book covers all the features with each option described. I would highly reccomend this book to be on your shelf as your main Inventor reference for the tool options. My only dissapointment is that I wish some of the options were explained in a little more detail, with maybe more examples, thats why I rated it a 4 instead of a 5. Even so, it is a great book, I would buy it again if I didn't already have it. Oh yeah, there are additional files etc available thru the authors site (but the book says you had to buy it thru them directly in order to gain access to the extras !?!).
No Surprises.......2006-07-19
The book was for a class my husband was taking. I can usually
count on Amazon.com to have the books he needs for his classes,
to receive the correct edition and receive it in a timely manner for a reasonable cost. Just what we need with no surprises.
Thanks.

Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire for Designers by Sham Tickoo .......2004-12-18
This book is definitely helpful (would you believe essential) in learning Pro/engineer Wildfire. It achieves a good balance between reference material and tutorial examples (as compared to Lamit's books which are mostly tutorial with CadTrain screen prints and step by step instructions, but with a good index).
Explaining any major software package really requires two books. This book is a good first book and it also covers some of the more advanced 3D modeling topics that you would expect in a second book. The examples of dimensioning and annotating 2D drawings are simplistic educational ones and not of the level used in industrial design drawings going to a machine shop to be fabricated.
The index is inexcusably incomplete. Key words like: note, layer, view, orientation, hide, shading and colors are missing from it. I find the topics that should be indexed by going to the most likely chapter and looking at every page for them. As hokey as that sounds it actually works fairly well. The help files with Pro/Engineer fill in most of the pieces that are missing from this book and they have an excellent search engine.
In the creating cross sectional views tutorial on page 10-24, I found one frustrating mistake in instruction step 11, which should read, "Choose the create 2 point lines from the sketch view pulldown sketch menu and draw the lines ..."
The bottom line is that this book will definitely assist you in learning Pro/Engineer Wildfire. Although count on the many hours of struggle and frustration that are required to learn any major software tool. I don't think any book or approach will ever change that.
Terrible index.......2004-04-07
Terrible index and wordy. Good tutorial, but not good as a reference book.
Good book, but verbose.......2004-03-10
The book is good, both for an experienced user migrating to Wildfire and a newbie. The author teaches the software on a step by step basis, followed by a thorough tutorial at the end of the chapters. The tutorials are useful, might as well skip the preceding sections and jump right at these to learn the software.
The book has one downside though, the author is very verbose, indicating even in the last chapter to "Click the right mouse button...", the book could've easily been 75 to 100 pages shorter.
The chapter on Surface Modeling is available for download from the publisher's website and it measures up to the rest of the book.
Overall, a good buy if you are new to Pro/E Wildfire.
Good Book...I liked it.......2003-12-19
Once I began this extraordinary book, I could not put it down. "Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire for Designers" is so much more than a gripping learning textbook. With his impeccable research, the author introduces us to aspects of designing. I, for one, had never known existed...or even thought about. I found myself, unwillingly, leaving the book, and time and time again, going online to view his website- only to find a new world of tips and techniques opening up for me. What a trip! What a read!
The book, take us through Feature creation commands, editing commands and far back to even sketching. We learn about the secrets of design intent.
The writing is excellent. Just learn it from first chapter to last and enjoy the world of product designing using Pro/E!
Learn Pro/E Wildfire efficiently.......2003-12-19
I am using Pro/ENGINEER since release 2000i and when I got Wildfire I thought I will learn it myself. But after playing with it for some time, I realized that I need some text to refer to. Then I got hold of this book. It is one of the best books available that someone can use to learn Wildfire. This book describes the solid modeling tools in Wildfire in detail with a lot of images and the language used is easily understandable. While working on engineering projects, I find this book very handy and I can refer to the explanation for modeling tools that are generally needed for most of the mechanical engineering projects.
In addition to the explanation to the modeling tools, there are tutorials in the book with step-by-step explanation. A number of tips and notes are given in this book that helped me in increasing my efficiency. By using this book I not only learned to use Wildfire but also learned to use it efficiently. The Detailing and Drafting portion of Wildfire is also explained with lot of details, making it easy for me to generate various types of drawing views of assemblies and solid models.
The chapter on surface modeling that is available for free download also seems to be good with 2 tutorials although I have not started learning them. But seeing the images they seem to be good.

This book takes a hands on approach to explain the ins and outs of autocad 2002. I am still working my way through it, but so far it has been a great learning tool. I don't know if my lack of indepth math skills is making a small part of the training hard or if there is a miniscule amount of of lack of clarity on the authors part that keeps me from giving this a solid A.
Check before you write anything.......2002-04-02
I am an AutoCAD instructor and we have been using tickoo's text in class for quite a few sessions now. We were delighted to see some great new and enhanced topics in the latest text and we recommend this text to our students and to anyone who is new to AutoCAD. Some of our students read the review here and were reluctant to buy this text. I would suggest that before people put their reviews here, they should check it because lot of people read these reviews and reading such reviews sometime distract them. Printout of help manual!!! You must be kidding me. Lot of explanation!!! This is what new students need I guess.
Strongly recommended for new users.
words, words, words.......2002-03-16
This is more or less a complete print out of the Autocad Help documents. Might be usefull as a reference but definetly not a book to learn with. I have past experience but it has been a few years since using AutoCad. To get an answer from this book, be prepared to read about every little detail possible and written in a very "professional" language - but that's not really necessary. So many words are in bold, it is useless. Seems the writer wanted to write even more but was out of ink. Easier just to use the Acad Help.
