2 out of 5 stars Overpriced.......2007-05-07

Although the quality of the Clifford plush was satisfactory I thought it was overpriced for the size I recieved.I was expecting a bigger dog for the dollar. Next time I won't buy a stuffed animal online unless they indicate the size.

The subtitle of Stop Pretending says it all: "What Happened When My Big Sister Went Crazy." In a sequence of short, intense poems based on the author's own experiences, a 13-year-old girl suffers through her shifting feelings about her sibling's mental illness. She recalls the terror of the Christmas Eve when Sister was suddenly transformed into a stranger; the horror of visiting Sister in the hospital and finding her rocking on all fours; the fear that her friends will find out; her own worry that she, too, may lose her mind; and her wistful memories of Sister as she was before. More complex emotions are also explored, such as her irrational suspicion that Sister may be deliberately acting crazy, as poignantly expressed in the title poem: "Stop pretending./ Right this minute./ Don't you tell me/ you don't know me./ Stop this crazy act/ and show me/ that you haven't changed./ Stop pretending/ you're deranged." Gradually, as Sister begins to recover, the girl is able to find hope and again take pleasure in her own life. Blank verse is perfect for a story with such heightened emotion, and is a format that has been used with great success in other fine novels for teens, notably the Newbery-award winning Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse, and Robert Cormier's boyhood memoir, Frenchtown Summer. Teen readers may even be so inspired as to try their own hand at this challenging but satisfying form. (Ages 10 and older) --Patty Campbell

Book Description

It happens just like that, in the blink of an eye. An older sister has a mental breakdown and has to be hospitalized. A younger sister is left behind to cope with a family torn apart by grief and friends who turn their backs on her. But worst of all is the loss of her big sister, her confidante, her best friend, who has gone someplace no one can reach.

In the tradition of The Bell Jar, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, and Lisa, Bright and Dark comes this haunting first book told in poems, and based on the true story of the author's life.

i got this book at the library today,

i read it in like 45 minutes.

its a book you can't put down.

4 out of 5 stars Stop Pretending.......2007-02-24

Stop Pretending is a simple read. It would only take a fast reader probably about only an hour to read. It's one of those books you can't put down. This novel does start out boring in the beginning, but it does get more and more interesting as the story goes on. Basically, it starts out with the a girl who's big sister when crazy one night. Later in the book it talks about how she dealt with it.

I'd say that some kids can relate to this girl, otherwise some people know some friends who have had a loved one gone crazy, or been in jail. This book is quite interesting, which is why i gave it a four stars. I would have given it five, but the novel didn't have the extra star that I wanted. I belive that the in verse novel could have used a little more detail. I would recommend this book more often to young readers. This book keeps you on your feet, which is why I would recommend it to many people.

4 out of 5 stars Mental Illness.......2007-02-23

This book is about the author's real life experience of her sister's mental breakdown that happened when the author was twelve and her sister was nineteen. The book is written entirely in poems. These poems don't tell the story from start to finish, but instead they show brief moments in the life of he narrator as she talks about visiting her sister or telling her friends that her sister is in a mental hospital, or when she talks about starting to date a new boy at school. Everything in her life is affected by her sister and the unhappiness and guilt she feels about her sister's condition.

Reading this story in poem form made it more powerful for me. I felt like so much was said in a small amount of space; it was better than a narrative and seemed to me to get across more feeling than a regular book would have. I felt like I really knew these sisters. I liked how many of the poems were flashbacks. I also liked the metamorphosis of the narrator who was eventually able to grow cofident and positive. I felt like the narrator's parents should have been able to help her out more, instead of being wrapped up in their own thoughts.

3 out of 5 stars stop pretending.......2007-01-26

this book is very good and a fast read.its more for the younger teenagers but older readers can appreciate cookies emotions. although stop pretending is good what my mother doesnt know & one of the hideous books where the mother dies are by far better

4 out of 5 stars "Stop Pretending".......2006-10-04

This Book "Stop Pretending" was excellent. It was about this young girl who has a older sister that is in the mental hospital. The older sister is in the hospital because she is crazy. She loved hr sister so much she always went to visit her and talked to her about her life, friends, love life..everything. Then when she tells her friends about her they turn her back on her and pick on her because her sister is crazy. This book was also terribly sad because of her sisters illness and how she was so depressed about it.The book was written in free verse poetry but it happened to not ryhme. Everyone who needs a book to read and enjoy I would recomend this.

      Book Description

It's culture creation made easy by a master of the independent art scene.

Join indie-guru Hal Niedzviecki on a how-to journey through the world of pop culture. In his upbeat, spirited style, Niedzviecki first provides a quick history of entertainment -- from its origins through to the present day, when corporate powers largely determine what we read, hear and watch.

Niedzviecki then shows how to reclaim cultural expression by encouraging everyone to use the tools of modern media: print (self-publishing zines, comics and books), video (making movies and shows), CD (creating original music) and the indie-paradise of the Internet (websites, blogs, video games). Quick and easy do-in-a-day project ideas are included, so emerging artists will feel ready to tackle more ambitious works.

Punctuated by inspiring interviews with young creators, engaging sidebars, and zine-style graphics that capture the spirit of the indie movement, The Big Book of Pop Culture is an empowering guide to original artistic expression.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Good info.......2007-09-19

Lots of good tips although many are available from alternate sources. I listen to his radio show and he doesn't seem to have any other agenda than helping people. Good common sense guidance as well as some not so common sense info. Not a necessity but certainly an excellent overall guide to protect yourself and be a smart consumer

3 out of 5 stars Some good ideas, some terrible ones. .......2004-09-27

Clark begins his book by saying that not all of the suggestions in his book are going to work for you. He admits that he doesn't use all of the tips himself. As a result some of his suggestions are accurate and useful, but a few are not.

I found these tips useful. He recommends using coupons where available. Shopping at discount food stores like Aldi's or SaveALot. Before you get major dental work done, get a second opinion. Eat before you go to the movies and avoid the concession stand. At a fast food restaurant get one or two items from the dollar menu instead of the big combo.

This suggestion seemed too extreme for anyone that actually enjoys video games. Follow this advice and your kids will be very disappointed. He suggests buying playstation one games instead of playstation two games because the graphics are all the same. That's like saying McDonald's food is just as tasty as food from the Olive Garden. A more reasonable suggestion would be to never buy a game when it is new for $50+ dollars. You can find most games on half.com for a reasonable price after they are a year old. Everything I have ever ordered there has worked perfectly. Also there are lots of new, quality games for 19.99 in the greatest hits collection. I never pay more than $20.00 for a game.

All in all a good book, it will probably pay for itself in a few weeks if you follow just a few of his tips. The best idea would be to read it in Borders or Barns and Nobles, it probably won't take you more than two hours, less if you skim.

2 out of 5 stars Mostly common sense. Why buy common sense?.......2004-02-18

I'm a big fan of Clark Howard and his other books and radio show. They contain oodles of great money saving info. Clark's radio show and books have saved me well over $900 this year with useful info I did not know about. However, this book was a letdown.

Most everything in this book was common knowledge or common sense. Example: Want cheap clothes, then buy them from a thrift store or discount store like TJ Maxx. Want cheap books, borrow them from the library, or buy them used on the internet. Too often the answer is buy used, or buy at a warehouse club.

I can't recommend this book unless you are a novice at saving money. You are better off saving your money and buying Clark's far superior book, "Get Clark Smart: The Ultimate Guide to Getting Rich in America", which despite its title is not a get rich quick book. That book has all sorts of useful and less known money saving ideas, and a lot of information on how to avoid getting ripped off.

        2 out of 5 stars not satisified.......2003-11-19

I have to agree with the other reviewer. I listen to clark Howard as often as I can so I was very disappointed by this book. If you listen to the show and consider yourself relatively frugal anyways, you probably will not learn anything from this book. A lot of it seems like common sense to me.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very good Info!.......2003-06-18

I like Clarks show. This book is great. I didn't really think it was a good idea to take your bottled wine to a fancy restaurant to save $ but the rest was really really good!

David Macaulay's hit PBS series by the same name cannot take you as far as this book does into the wonders of the constructed world: dams, domes, skyscrapers, tunnels, and bridges. It's also a trip through time, transporting you, for instance, from Rome's Ponte Fabricio (built in 62 B.C.) to the 1930s Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco to France's Ponte de Normandie across the Seine, which was the longest bridge on earth when completed in 1994. Some of the wires that so ingeniously hold up the Golden Gate are depicted in their intricate engineering context--and at their actual size. As you pore over Macaulay's crystal-clear text and profuse illustrations, the mental fog lifts and you get a sense of what a marvelous act of imagination the bridge is.

In books about building, the whole art lies in the details. Macaulay gives you a glimpse into the minds of the designers, too: in making a tunnel under the Thames River in London, Marc Brunel was inspired by shipworms, "the scourge of the Royal Navy," mollusks who used shieldlike shells to bore holes through timber "and then had the audacity to create a rigid lining in the wood with material they excreted." Though the poor workers who created Brunel's tunnel shields had to brave fiery explosions of methane gas and vile fumes from centuries of sewage--and as Macaulay rather rudely puts it, "Brunel's shield now seems a bit like a platoon of creaking Star Wars robots leaning against each other for support as they inch their way nervously through the muck"--the construction did the trick. That tunnel begun in 1825 is still part of the London Underground subway system.

Macaulay can construct a sound sentence: a child can grasp his celebration of the art of engineering, and a grownup can read him with childlike glee. --Tim Appelo

        Book Description

Why this shape and not that? Why steel instead of concrete or stone? Why put it here and not over there? These are the kinds of questions that David Macaulay asks himself when he observes an architectural wonder. These questions take him back to the basic process of design from which all structures begin, from the realization of a need for the structure to the struggles of the engineers and designers to map out and create the final construction. As only he can, David Macaulay engages readers' imaginations and gets them thinking about structures they see and use every day - bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers, domes, and dams. In Building Big he focuses on the connections between the planning and design problems and the solutions that are finally reached. Whether a structure is imposing or inspiring, he shows us that common sense and logic play just as important a part in architecture as imagination and technology do. As always, Macaulay inspires readers of all ages to look at their world i

5 out of 5 stars Building Big does a great job explaining civil engineering concept!.......2007-01-05

This book is outstanding! It's informative, yet easy to read. I have used it as the textbook for my high school engineering class for two years, and the students love it!

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-24

I bought this book for my 6 year old son who is an avid builder. I knew that the text would be above his head, so I read the book before giving it to him so I could summarize the paragraphs for him. He asks to look at this book every night and loves it. This is not a picture book as it has a lot of text, but the pictures are well done, and he has gained some basic building concepts that he uses with his Legos and blocks. He likes to look at the book about how they build a structure (he is really fascinated by the Hoover dam and Petronas Towers) and they we look online at the completed pictures. It's a great book for older children (or if you want to take the time with a younger child to explain it) and I recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Gift for Someone Who Loves Architecture.......2001-12-31

I gave this book as a gift to someone who loves and understands architecture. He found it most interesting. It contains many facts that are not generally know about large, historical structures.

        5 out of 5 stars A BIG success.......2001-03-13

David Macaulay takes the reader on a tour of some of the really big civil engineering structures of our time. Building Big has sections on Bridges, Tunnels, Dams, Domes, and Skyscrapers. Each part of the book describes the design and construction of from four to ten outstanding examples of the structure highlighted. The examples in each category are described in chronological order with some going back to the time of ancient Rome. The drawings that accompany the text are excellent at focusing on the details and techniques described. The integration of text and graphics is wonderful. In each case, Macaulay describes the design objectives, the interplay between the structure and the environment, and the engineering solutions used to bring the structures into being. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in structural engineering and design. I have not seen the related PBS video series, but I can say that the book stands on its own very well. Highly recommended.

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-11-16

Macaulay fans are going to be amazed and impressed by this, his best book yet. It's a companion to the PBS series that's better than the films! A must see and better yet, must buy.

My son got this for Christmas when he was about 7 months, he loved watching us stack up the blocks and then he would knock them over. Now at 18 months he still loves this, he is now able to stack them himself and then loves to knock them over.

4 out of 5 stars Christianity-centered money smarts, if that's what you want.......2003-11-15

Prospective buyers should be aware this book contains fantastic information on money management for teens and young adults and that it also contains a chapter--a serious chapter--on tithing and the gospel behind it, and that some of the chapter review questions have more to do with what the Bible says about money management than what a financial advisor would tell you.
