5 out of 5 stars Dead or Disappeared.......2007-09-21

White Night (2007) is the ninth Urban Fantasy novel in the Dresden Files series, following Proven Guilty. In the previous volume, Harry fetched Molly Carpenter back from Arctis Tor, with a little help from his friends. He took her back to her family, but she decided to turn herself in to the White Council for violations of the Fourth Law.

At the trial, the Merlin arbitrarily convicted her of using black magic and sentenced her to death. Harry pointed out that the Gatekeeper hadn't yet cast his vote. Then Ebenezar McCoy arrived with survivors of the Warden training group accompanied by Molly's father Michael. Merlin reconsidered his verdict and Molly became Harry's apprentice.

In this novel, Sergeant Murphy has a probable suicide, but she rides a hunch and calls in Harry. He checks out the scene and casts a spell at a particular place on the wall. The notation "EXODUS 22:18" appears and Karrin knows the victim was murdered.

Suddenly, Murphy strikes out with a foot sweep and a young woman -- little more than a girl -- becomes visible and falls to the floor. Harry's apprentice Molly hasn't done as he told her and now she has a few bruises and pains to remind her to obey her master. Not that she is going to pay attention, but one more lesson won't hurt . . . much!

Harry does congratulate her on the invisibility spell, but points out that both he and Sergeant Murphy had noticed a few out-of-place sounds and smells. Molly needs to put in some extra practice, but she is improving. Molly goes home happy, but aching in several places.

In this story, Harry and Murphy find other victims around Chicago and elsewhere. Most of the Chicago victims belong to a witch group known as Ordo Lebes, which Dresden translates in his correspondence course Latin as "Order of the Big Pot". Karrin, however, suggests that a better interpretation would be "Order of the Cauldron". But one victim does not belong to this order.

Harry also discovers that one of the Ordo Lebes is Helen Beckitt, whom he has had problems with in the past. Although she cooperates with Harry and Murphy and doesn't even deny her prison record, Dresden just can't bring himself to trust her. When he discovers that she works for John Marcone, both Harry and Murphy become suspicious of her behavior.

Harry meets another old acquaintance on this case. Elaine had been his first girl, but they had parted after Harry killed their mentor. While the White Council ruled that the killing was in self-defense, Elaine was already gone. Yet she had not forgotten him and even followed his career path as a consulting wizard.

This story also has a minor side plot involving the fallen angel Lasciel. The shadow of Lasciel residing in his mind provides some useful services, such as translation of dead languages, but is still trying to seduce him to the evil side. It occurs to Harry that such seduction can go both ways and he treats "Lash" as an almost trusted friend. Some surprising changes occur.

While Harry doesn't really like being a Warden of the White Council, he hasn't considered it as a handicap. Then a mysterious Grey Cloak is noticed as somehow involved with the dead witches and everybody is afraid to tell Harry. And his brother Thomas is often observed with these victims shortly before their death or disappearances. Being an enforcer for the Council is bad enough without the paranormal community wondering whether you are responsible for these passings.

Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural creatures, paranormal individuals, and strange happenings.

I love this series and enjoy the way it is going. Harry is amusing and this one does not disappoint. I do miss Bob the Skull. He was not featured as much in this one and i miss that... just my own personal quirk.

Being a witch myself I just love Harry. He is funny and romantic and heroic in this one and all my favorite characters are in it. I cannot wait until the next book comes out. I am also very thankful that most of the time my being a witch is not as dangerous. White Night (The Dresden Files, Book 9)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome .......2007-07-02

I'm not sure why I kept putting off buying this book. I am very glad that I finally did. I'm only sorry it went so quick. I couldn't put it down. It's the first book I've read by Kim Baldwin but I am online right now so I can buy another. I liked the action and fell instantly for the characters. There was excitment, adventure and love. It was a really great book. Perfect for a quick escape. I think I can forgive Bold Strokes now.
Enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Baldwin's best.......2007-05-27

"Flight Risk" wasn't a bad book...just a bit unbelievable and a bit out there.

Blayne witnesses a mob murder and goes into Witness Protection. And, as you can guess, she's not safe in that Witness Protection. So enters Alexi.

Sparks fly and attraction is mutual between the two women. Blayne, however, is a pain in the butt. And that begins to get annoying after awhile, especially when Alexi pulls Blayne's butt out of the fire again and again and again.

Not one of Baldwin's better books. Her earlier published books are better than "Flight Risk," especially the book about the firefighter (the name slips my mind at this moment).

3 out of 5 stars Just ok.......2007-05-17

It was a good read. I just kind of lost some of my interest towards the end. It started to feel drawn out. Action was good and the conflict of the main characters. Just did not resolve itself quick enough for me.

5 out of 5 stars A Romance Thriller.......2007-05-10

This lesbian romance is also a thriller, similar in story to The Bodyguard. It's pure entertainment that will keep you riveted for hours.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

2 out of 5 stars Struggled to finish.......2007-06-24

After reading "When Bruce ment Cyn" I was looking foward to reading "The Secret Life of Bryan" by Lori Foster. Byant has switch places with his twin brother Bruce when Bruce is beaten up for trying to help former ladies of the night Shay Sommer has called by press the "Crown Princess" for all the good works that she does. When Bryan mistakes Shay for a hooker, she decides to stay to try to help others. Bryan wants Shay, but he can't believe he wants her and his confuse by this.
I really wanted to like "The Secret of Bryan" but I found that is was a struggled to finish it. This book just didn't see like a Lori Foster book, it lacked the romance of other book by Ms. Foster, I sorry that I spent the money I did for this book.

The whole visitation series is GREAT!!! I fell in love with Say no To JOe, And JAMIE. It's great because it's funny and and the characters are in all of the Visitation books. They are definatley my favorite Lori foster books.
I thought the book was great esp when Shay kissed the wrong brother! I busted out laughing. I love the very bad boy books that she writes!

1 out of 5 stars Senseless.... .......2006-12-06

I couldnt get into it at all, just mindless rambling that went on and on. I struggled to page 157 and finally had to close the book.... and sat thinking... where the heck was the plot? "...I just read HALF the book!"

Dont waste your time, money and effort... What a shame, from reading the back I was looking forward to it.

5 out of 5 stars Romantic mystery.......2006-03-08

I think I found a new favorite author. This novel has attempted murders, deception, prostitution and two great love scenes. Bryan the bounty hunter is pretending to be his twin brother the preacher who runs a halfway house. Shay wants to open her own halfway house and pretends to be prostitute. A quick read that would leave you begging for more.

I LOVE HER BOOKS. CAN'T PUT HER BOOKS DOWN. READ EVERY ONE OF HER BOOKS I CAN GET MY HANDS ON.

1 out of 5 stars lame.......2007-03-27

I hope Hot Blooded is not indicative of all her writing.
It was painfully derivative, with cookie cutter good guys and bad guys.
The heroine has no discernible qualities that would make you want to root for her.
The ancillary characters are one-dimensional and not very appealing.
I have a couple more of her books I picked up in the discount bin. I hope they have a little more umph to them.
I finished it, but it was by no means a good read. At all.

4 out of 5 stars Little slow at first but then really gets going.......2007-01-27

I give this 4 stars because the beginning is rather slow and drags on a little too much.. From about pg. 100 or so on, things really get going and this novel turns into a real hot romantic psychological thriller. Ms. Jackson develops the characters well and the story is anything but predictable.

2 out of 5 stars Bad.......2007-01-17

I have always liked all of Lisa Jackson's books, but this one was too unreal.
Hookers are being killed in New Orleans. The killer uses a rosery to choke them.
The killer calls himself John, he kills women and then he calls into Dr. Samantha Leeds's radio show. And John also starts calling Sam at home and leaving mail and cakes for her.
The people think it maybe someone close to her or a stranger she has just met.
The problem I had with this book is:

1 Samantha Leeds is a weak character to be a psycologist.

2.The police tell her to keep her doors locked, don't go out alone, and don't talk to strange men she doesn't know.

3.What does she do, she meets a man that has moved on her block, and she gives him her phone no., goes out on a boat with him and sleeps with him.

Please, if I had a serial killer after me, I would not give out my no. or invite strange men to my house. Let alone go out with him on his boat over night and leave my doors unlocked.
And Sam was suppose to be the one with the college degree.

I am going to read Cold Blooded next since I ordered them together and see if it is worth reading.

I know from some of the other reviews that other people liked this book. I guess it was just disappointing for me.

4 out of 5 stars Slick & fast-paced - will keep you glued!.......2006-03-09

Late night radio psychologist Samantha Leeds is drawn into a serial killers web when she starts receiving threatening letters and phone calls from a listener who goes by the name of John. John is actually a psychopath who holds Sam responsible for the death of a teenage girl who called into her show in Houston a decade earlier, and Sam was not able to reach her. In order to get Sam to repent, John strangles several hookers with a deadly rosary.

She gets involved with Ty, her sexy neighbor, and unbeknownst to her, he has sought out Sam with plans to use her for his own research to probe into the teen's death. When they start sleeping together, Ty realizes he has crossed the line, but fears that if he tells her the truth, she will hate him.

Working with NOPD Detectives Rick Bentz and Rueben Montoya to investigate the crime, Sam's ratings start to flourish with each phone call from John. As they race against the clock to learn John's real identity, Sam is not sure if she can trust those closest to her, including her estranged brother, her assistant, and the station owner, who wants to capitalize on John's presence for the ratings bonanza it has become.

This slick and fast-paced thriller tosses out so many possible baddies, that readers will be guessing until the very end.

5 out of 5 stars Three words... A... Ma.... Zing.... (yes I know it's one word...it's a joke!).......2007-10-04

I can't say enough good things about this book. Karen Rose is masterful at telling a story, bringing her characters to life and leaving nothing to chance... period. This story is gripping and very easy to follow. It's entertaining and flows like water. Or maybe like a river of blood!!!!

This is a taut thriller with Tess at the center of a mystery bigger than life and death. Why are her patients dying?

Karen Rose is new to me, but she is here to stay. She is a writer with a HUGE future still ahead of her... even after the monster success she's already enjoyed. I can't wait to read more of her work!

4 out of 5 stars Not my favorite, but a fun read.......2007-03-27

At times a little repetitive, a little slow, sometimes a little cliche...but the mystery behind all those deaths and the complex serial killer Karen Rose gave life too keeps you turning the pages , dying to find out what set all that into motion. Fun read.

5 out of 5 stars An Exciting Rollercoaster Ride . . . .......2007-01-29

with more twists and turns than you can fathom! Truly one of the best mysteries that I've read in a very long time. The author does an excellent job of keeping you guessing not only from page to page but from paragraph to paragraph. I honestly had no clue who the ultimate villian was. I can't wait to read more books by this talented writer.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling first rate read.......2007-01-09

Someone is encouraging the patients of Dr. Tess Ciccotelli to commit suicide, and all clues lead police to the doctor herself. Estranged from her family and already considered a pariah by police since her testimony made sure a cop killer did not stand trial due to insanity, they don't want to clear her just yet. But the coincidences are just that, and someone with a grudge wants to see Tess not only stripped of her job, but her freedom too.

When detective Aidan Regan starts to suspect that she is the pawn in a sadistic killer's game of vengeance, he vows to protect the woman that on one hand he dislikes, and on the other he desires. As the two are drawn to each other, and she escapes the traps the killer has set, it becomes an even deadlier game as friends and acquaintances are suddenly being targeted. Will they be able to figure out who hates Tess enough to commit murder before she becomes the next victim or has a chance to reconcile with the family she loves and misses so much?

Rose's latest is yet another first rate romantic suspense, guaranteed to have you biting your nails right down to the cuticle. With plenty of potential suspects and a few plot surprises, the duo of Tess and Aidan burn up the pages and make this nearly 500 pager go quickly. It begs the question, can Rose write a mediocre novel? Doesn't appear so.

4 out of 5 stars Really a 4 1/2 star book.......2007-09-21

In the Dark is the second book in this series that deals with 3 Navy SEALs - Gabe Renault (aka Jaguar - his story was the first book in the series Forget Me Not), Luther Lindstrom (aka Little John - his story is this book), and Chase McCaffrey (aka Westy - his story is in Time to Run).

In this book, Luther Lindstrom, a Navy SEAL, has been assigned to save and protect Hannah Geary. Hannah has mysteriously disappeared and Luther and his team have learned that she's being kept in Cuba. While he and his team try to rescue Hannah, she's saving herself and meets up with Luther and his team as she makes her escape from the cell where she's been held.

Hannah Geary, a CIA agent, was working with her partner on a suspected arms smuggling investigation when her partner was mysteriously killed. Now she's been kidnapped and in Cuba - what's going on? Why was she kidnapped but not killed like her partner?

After Hannah escapes from Cuba, she works with Luther to determine what her partner learned. They need this information as Gabe Renault is facing a court martial due to his actions in Forget Me Not. Luther is torn - he's attracted to Hannah but he needs information to save his commander. And just who is trying to get Hannah out of the way?

Along with the mystery is the romance between Luther and Hannah. Luther just broke off his engagement to his fiancée who was cheating on him. He knows what he wants in a relationship - he wants a woman who he can wants children and keep the home fires burning while he's away on missions. While he is attracted to Hannah, he knows - and Hannah agrees - that she's not that type of woman.

Hannah Geary is a wonderful heroine - strong and determined to figure things out. She's not content to stay at home and be protected. She's taking action - which doesn't always suit Luther.

As far as the mystery here, I found that, like in Forget Me Not, it was pretty easy to figure out the bad guy. But that didn't stop me from enjoying this book. It has a nice balance of romance and suspense (though I wouldn't have minded a bit more romance). There's also the secondary story of Sebastian and Leila, a romance first hinted at in Forget Me Not which gets resolved very nicely here.

I'm usually not that crazy about sequels - I figure - couldn't the author have figured out a different storyline instead of continuing something I just read? But it works here. In fact, I liked this book more than Forget Me Not - I think because the female heroine is such a strong intelligent woman. If you plan on reading Forget Me Not, be sure you read it before you read this book - if you read this book first and then go back to read Forget Me Not, you'll know the basic storyline and the bad guy of that book.

2 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere for better..........2007-09-20

I really cannot understand the people who recommended this book, either they haven't had the chance to read something better or our tates really differ! Through out the story you never feel a connection with the characters, which is imperative in order to enjoy a book and feel part of it...As an avid reader I've had the opportunity to read romances, suspense and my favorite, a combination of both these elements and I can honestly say that there is so much better out there you can pick out from than this book...sorry! but it is just not worth your money!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting - fast paced - very well written!.......2007-07-20

I just found this author when I picked up the first book in the series, Forget Me Not. I was so impressed with her writing style. Not a cookie cutter romance or suspense novel. This second book in particular starts out very strong and keeps pace the entire way- I stayed up until 4am to finish it - wow! It was intense!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2007-06-09

I found this book to be well written, fast paced, easy to read and follow, with some steam--not much though. This was the first Seal Team 12 book for me and I'll look for others. I enjoyed the suspense that followed along the plot; there was also another story brewing in the sidelines--sweet story. If you like action, adventure and two characters that are good people, you'll enjoy this one.

Although IN THE DARK is a stand-alone book, I would highly recommend reading Ms. Melton's previous release, Forget Me Not (Seal Team 12) (Warner Forever), before you start this latest Navy SEAL story. You'll have a better feel for the supporting characters, not to mention that Forget Me Not (Seal Team 12) (Warner Forever) was a wonderful book! In this second SEAL installment, the danger is notched up, the passion burns hotter, and the saga continues.

Navy SEAL Lieutenant Gabe "Jaguar" Renault has been caught in the crossfire of a cover-up. Only a short week ago, their Admiral had assured them that Commander Edward Lovitt would stand trial for the crimes he had committed, not the least of which was trafficking in stolen weapons. Somehow, though, Gabe is now the one sitting in jail, awaiting sentence from the NCIS. Not to be deterred, Lieutenant Luther Lindstrom and his fellow SEALs are determined to see justice prevail, and there's only one way to get it-find Defense Intelligence agent Hannah Geary and have her testify as to Lovitt's crimes.

The problem is that Lovitt has done a good job of keeping Hannah away from anyone who can cause him trouble. He had her partner killed, and now Hannah is far away on the other side of the world, in a prison in Santiago , Cuba , under the watchful and cruel eye of General Pizon. When Pizon pushes his torture too far and attempts to rape Hannah, she kills him-then realizes she still has to find a way out of her prison. Thankfully, Luther and his men have come to Cuba to rescue her, which will in turn save their fellow SEAL, Gabe. Having killed the general, Hannah's escape is facilitated by the SEAL team, and now all of them are on the run from a regime bent on revenge.

Now not only do Luther, Hannah, and the SEALs need to get out of Cuba, but they need to make sure Hannah returns to the States alive, in order to testify as to Commander Lovitt's crimes against the Navy. In the course of their trip, Luther and Hannah attempt to fight the ever-growing attraction that's between them. Luther's not a man who wants to give his heart to another woman, having already been tricked once by a cheating fiance. And as for Hannah, the death of her partner and the almost-rape by General Pizon have damaged her to the point that she's not sure she can readily be close to man again.

Marliss Melton has penned another winner. Fast-paced action, nail-biting suspense, and passion all intertwine to make this story well worth the read. I look forward to her next SEAL story, Time to Run (Seal Team 12), which is set to release from Warner Forever in February of 2006.

3 out of 5 stars Deep Freeze.......2007-09-02

This is a good book; however I didn't actually get into it until about the 15th chapter. I don't know what it was about this book, it seemed to have everything it needed but something was missing. And why does every character have a horrible tragedy in there past? You don't need to have something horrible happen to you to be a loner. About the epilogue, is there supposed to be another book? Why did it end like that? I do recommend this book though; just make sure you have patience to get to the good stuff.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2006-12-02

This is my first Jackson book and it felt just average to me. Nothing to recommend it. The characters were written well. The characters had depth but something was missing. The side romance between Shane and Jenna seemed forced and lacking in chemistry and romance. Heres the scoop on the book:

Shane is the sheriff of this Oregon town where dead woman are showing up where other woman of there close town are going missing.

Jenna is a ex-hollywood actress who has come to this small town to raise her two girls away from the limelight. Jenna is sexy, beautiful, great bod and every mans fantasy. We know this because the author describes her in every format this way. Her daughters Cassie and Allie were the least likeable characters in the book. Spoiled, whinning, rude girls!

Jenna starts recieving phone calls, problems with her home, her private things going missing and so on. So she inlists the help of the town sheriff - Shane. The first time they met they did not hit if off. (He gave her a ticket for a broken taillight) Just because he was in a bad mood and she is a ex-hollywood actress. But anyways through this story there are supposed to be atttracted to each other, I did not feel that way while reading this. I felt the author through this on the side and it was sorely lacking in romance.

Then there is the suspense. Where was it? I was waiting and waiting to find out who did it and why and then was let down. Oh in the end you know the name of the guy who has been doing the kinllings but not why. Nothing about him about his reasons, no insight whatsoever. Disappointing. He's obsessed with Jenna Hughes but why her? Well you never figure that out.

Then there is the flashback to Shane's life in the past that he cannot get over. His friend Davids death and his wife Carolyn. There was no real understanding there to why the author wrote that in the story. It felt thrown in but never understading why. His friend David died while climbing and he has never forgiven himself? And Jennas sister getting killed on the set of a movie. It was mentioned over and over but no details. Don't mention something over and over without explaining. Then when Jenna finds photos of Caroyln in Shanes pocket after they had sex, he never explains and she never asks him to, she says she does'nt want to know. What woman would'nt want to know? Then they have a little argument and then the end Boom! Thats it, yes there was a epilogue but I felt things not being wrapped up very well.

5 out of 5 stars What a thriiling book.......2006-11-10

Just discovered this author. This book is the best thriiler I have ever read. I have read Stephen King and Dean Koontz but this author surpasses anything I have read.
I am looking forward to reading more of her books.

4 out of 5 stars Good Suspenseful Story.......2006-09-13

This was a good book. The story line has good twists and turns and held the reader's interest. There was a good level of creepiness to the story. It was nice to see a strong female character, rather than a stupid, whiney one.

I enjoyed this book. Worth reading!

5 out of 5 stars I know these people :) .......2007-09-08

I love Jennifer Crusie! For all of us women who have insecurities (and who doesn't) Jennifer C. makes you feel right at home. The first book of hers that I read was "Welcome to Temptation' and I have been a diehard fan ever since. I can relate to every single heroine and the relatives that surround them. Its the story of my life .... better than chocolate anyday

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Escape.......2007-05-30

This book is all about trying to find the guy of your dreams; hence the title "Manhunting." The big catch in this book is the the main two characters meet eachother right off the bat but don't realize they are perfect for eachother. After many dates that end very badly, and the guy getting more and more jealous, it becomes a book you can't put down. Check it out yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage early Crusie.......2007-04-17

I'm just discovering Crusie's books from the early '90s and it is easy to see why she became one of the most beloved writers in the romance genre. Manhunting is her first book -- it's not exciting and has no mystery plot like her other books, but somehow is one of the most charming, funny and witty stories I've read! Like our couple Kate and Jake, this book is so relaxed that you, too, feel like you're lazing along a calm, sunny lake. The dialogue is superior and fuels the attraction between the two, a true, lovely romance novel. This book demonstrates why Crusie is head and shoulders above the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Reprint of previous printed book.......2007-03-31

I loved the book, I always enjoy Jennifer Crusie's novels, but had not read the forward that stated it was a reprint, though I know the originals are rare. I might have waited to buy it if I had realized it.

4 out of 5 stars A light read.......2007-03-25

Jennifer Crusie's "Manhunting" centered around Kate, a successful high-powered business consultant who took a vacation at a golf resort in Kentucky with the aim of finding a partner who would be equally successful. What Kate did not expect was to meet Jake, a good-looking but seemingly unsuccessful person working at the resort, whom she had mistaken to be a "handyman." Jake, on the other hand, had left his successful career as a tax attorney to return to Kentucky, wanting to have a relaxing life, and not be in the rat's race. They fell in love of course and the rest of the story was rather predictable.

This was one of Jennifer Crusie's earlier novels which was released again after Crusie gained success in the publishing world. This was a very light and fun read, with very little plot or secondary characters. It was focused quite entirely on both Kate and Jake. Eventhough I can see the same Crusie humor in "Manhunting" I could still recognized that it is a little different from her current books which has better plots. Still, this was a fun read and if you are a Jennifer crusie fan, "Manhunting" is defintiely for you.

Book Description

With beauty, power, and remarkable wit, Mary-Ann Tirone Smith interweaves a bittersweet portrait of growing up among the working stiffs of 1950s Hartford, Connecticut, with the chilling progress of a serial pedophile who threatens to shatter her small town's innocence. In Girls of Tender Age, Smith lovingly evokes the jubilance and chaos of life in her extended French-Italian family and the challenges of living with her brother Tyler, an autistic at a time before anyone knew what that meant. Hanging over Smith's rough-and-tumble youth is the shadow of the approaching killer who forever alters the landscape of her childhood.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good memoir.......2007-09-24

It's good, but it is rather slow. Most of the book consists of the author's family memoir. Very little is actually given to the murder. The biggest problem I had with it, is that the author's anger, at her mother, at the 50s, at the Catholic church, at the lack of services for autistic kids, at "the government," whatever, comes through loud and clear and continually. It's less like a book than like having your irate neighbor in to blow off steam at your kitchen table. Some people will probably like that about it. I felt that the author lost credibility there.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Book I've Read This Year.......2007-08-28

The author brings us back to what family life was like in a small American city in the early 50's- a time when most people didn't bother to lock their doors. She portrays the effects of a horrific crime on the community, her friends and family, and herself. This true story evokes a gamut of emotions from laughter to suspense to anger to deep sadness. I couldn't put it down.
As one who grew up in the same neighborhood, and whose destiny was subtly influenced by the events of the story, I found it especially compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Shattered childhood.......2007-07-26

Growing up in the '50s, Mary-Ann Tirone understood that certain things were never discussed...especially with children.

But when her 11-year-old classmate Irene is brutally murdered, it rocks the entire community. At the time, the city of Hartford, CT was relatively safe, inhabited largely by poor immigrants, a place where doors were unlocked and children could walk freely by themselves. So who would imagine that a walk to the corner grocery store for potatoes could end so horribly for little Irene?

Forbidden to speak about Irene -- by both her teacher and her parents -- Mary-Ann supressed the period until college, when she was required to write an autobiography for a class. Her professor encouraged her to investigate the topic, as the adult Mary-Ann realized she didn't even know if Irene's killer had ever been caught.

Tirone Smith interweaves the story of Irene with the story of her own dysfunctional childhood, growing up with an autistic brother before any such term existed. All she knew, as a child, was that the family's world revolved around Tyler, and his demands were precise and odd -- no noise of any sort; nothing with the color red; reading every war book every written and acting the stories out. Every time Mary-Ann tried to speak to her parents about her own life, they would simply remind her that she should be glad she wasn't Tyler.

As a native of Connecticut, well familiar with the Hartford and Newington area Tirone Smith describes, I can imagine with even more clarity the events recalled, though they took place in a time long before mine. While Irene's death was indeed a tragedy, ignoring her life is something that no one should do...

5 out of 5 stars A moving, memorial of a memoir..........2007-06-27

My wife read this book as her current, monthly, book club assignment with such obvious delight that I picked it up when she was done, and, very quickly, this Internet junkie could not put it down. Mary-Ann Tirone Smith's engaging style snared this reader into understanding and sensing her childhood as she lived it.

My background as a first-generation American of Russian descent, growing up on the north side of metro-Boston, enabled me to relate fully to the nuances of Smith's immediate and extended ethnic family.

The book is an exquisite combination of memoir and mystery, interspersed with interesting and appropriate items of historical significance that broadened the book's appeal for the history-lover in me.

This was my first encounter with a book without quotation marks delineating dialog. This caused me to reread numerous passages for a proper understanding. If this was Smith's intention, then she succeeded.

Some reader reviews are critical of Smith for what amounts to a lack of political correctness (pc) toward certain characters. Remember that the life-experiences about which Smith wrote predate the scourge of pc. Had she fallen into the pc-trap she would not have been true to her times.

To the reader who grudgingly parted with a 1-star rating for this book because of being "bored, bored, bored" by the personal accounts of Smith's life:
Pray tell, what do you think a memoir is?! After reading all your other pans of books one can easily conclude that reading is not your thing. Why do you bother?
