Customer Reviews:
Kind of Silly!!!.......2007-07-02
I guess I thought that this book would have information about how to train and prepare for a variety of circumstances and eat right and get fit but it had more information about things like dressing sexy to capture a man's attention or making a man be your "slave" by treating him like crap and keeping him "coming back for more" and other silly things like that, which I am not really interested in.
No girl should be without this book.......2007-01-05
From How to Choke a Man With Your Bare Thighs, to How to Give Birth Under Pressure, this book is extremely informative for any modern day gal. There's a very interesting article on How to Outwit a Sasquatch, who knew that baring your teeth to the "Yeti" may be interpreted as an act of aggression...? And need I mention the article of How to Fend Off the Undead??
The book comes complete with an entire article on Action Heroine Hairstyles along with dozens of other TV and movie skills.
Get the book, is has a plethora of useful information, and like I said, no modern day girl should be without this handy purse size book!! (fits most Coach bags)
Superwoman meets couch patato.......2006-03-19
Another thrift shop bargain and what a bargain it was!
I laughed myself silly when I read this book, however I did enjoy reading it even if it did take itself too seriously at times but perhaps this was a subtle tongue in cheek gesture, I don't know but it was fun!
Each major section starts with a quote from either a Chick Flick or a film that has a strong female protagonist, I liked this touch and one of my favourite films "Aliens 2" appeared in it a couple of times with some excellent quotes that most of us would recognise.
This is a book for all you girls out there who secretly want to be Lara Croft, Buffy, or the next Darkangel, it give you such tips as how to drink a man under the table, escape from kidnappers, how to get your hair like your favourite heroine, surf like a demon, survive in the wilderness with nothing more than matches, a bit of string and a paperclip, as well showing you how to be someone else for a research project.
My favourite mini section in the book was on how to bluff your way into the world of the working girl, the hot tips given in the book actually came from a working girl who knows the ropes and at the time of publication she was working in the famous Bunny Ranch in Nevada.
This is the sort of book you would take on a long trip with you, it will keep you entertained that is for sure, and it is also the sort of book you can browse through again and again and some of the tips and suggestions in it are actually quite useful though I don't think I will be trying out "how to be a superwoman" tip any time soon!
A crackingly good book for the couch patato hero in all of us who is just dying to get out and show the world what she is made of...if she had the energy that is!!!!!
Fun gag gift, quick distraction.......2005-07-26
This is a great gift for the she-woman in your life, and a fun one to pass around among friends. If you are familiar with "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook" and the others of the like, you'll know what fun you are in for (the author actually wrote "The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Dating & Sex").
There are some memorable lessons in here, all accompanied by terrific illustrations. Don't expect this book to change your life, but it will give you a few laughs and perhaps some tips on getting out of sticky situations.
Great Book.......2004-12-30
Great book with real live advice about survival techniques. Similar to the other Survival Handbooks with First Aid-type illustrations, this is handy for those who would like to find out how real live people like stunt doubles, firefighters, and police officers survive perilous situations. Other recommended books: The Action Hero's Handbook, Queen B's Guide to Being a Superheroine, Worst-Case Scenario Handbook, SAS Survival Handbook, and Spy Survival Handbook.
Product Description
With the Civil Rights movement of the sixties fresh in their perspective, movie producers of the early 1970s began to make films aimed toward the underserved African American audience. Over the next five years or so, a number of cheaply made, so-called blaxploitation movies featured African American actresses in roles which broke traditional molds. Typically long on flash and violence but lacking in character depth and development, this genre nonetheless did a great deal toward redefining the perception of African American actresses, breaking traditional African American female stereotypes and laying the groundwork for later feminine action heroines. This critical study examines the ways in which the blaxploitation heroines of the early 1970s reshaped the presentation of African American actresses on screen and, to a certain degree, the perception of African American females in general. It discusses the social, political and cultural context in which blaxploitation films emerged. The work focuses on four African American actresses—Pam Grier, Tamara Dobson, Teresa Graves and Jeanne Belle—providing critical and audience response to their films as well as insight into the perspectives of the actresses themselves. The eventual demise of the blaxploitation genre due to formulaic plots and lack of character development is also discussed. Finally, the work addresses the mainstreaming of the action heroine in general and a recent resurgence of interest in black action movies. Relevant film stills and a selected filmography including cast list and plot synopsis are also included.

Book Description
Here is the incomparable cast of the DC Comics universe: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, the Green Lantern, and the rest of the Justice League as you’ve never seen them before.
Mythology brings together the best-loved comic characters in the world, brought to life by one of the most astonishing young artists working in the medium today, Alex Ross. The award-winning designer/writer Chip Kidd and photographer Geoff Spear have teamed up to create a book like no other, with an introduction by M. Night Shyamalan, the acclaimed director of Signs and The Sixth Sense.
Ross has often been called “the Norman Rockwell of comics,” and this book reveals not only his lifelong love of these classic super heroes but also his vision: Mythology takes you into the studio for a behind-the-scenes look at his fascinating creative process. The combination of Ross’s dynamic art and Kidd’s kinetic design make images from his most memorable stories–including Kingdom Come, Superman: Peace on Earth, Batman: War on Crime, and Uncle Sam–soar off the more than 280 pages. There are also hundreds of never-before-seen sketches, limited edition prints, and prototype sculptures. Vintage DC comic panels are interspersed throughout, as reference points from which Ross launches his extraordinary interpretations.
And most exciting for Ross fans, inside is a DC Comics first: an exclusive, original Superman-Batman story, written by Kidd and painted by Ross. Also included is an all-new origin of Robin, written by Paul Dini.
Mythology is a book in which every page explodes with the power of the icons it celebrates.

Fantastic Review of Alex Ross' Art.......2007-08-04
It's a great work, detailing all the work of Alex Ross in DC Comics. In this book, we get the notions of how he figures out the characters, their concepts and ideologies, etc. Moreover, with this book we can see how the Art is transported from the artist's mind to the paper.
There's just one book better than this one: it's hardcover version, much more beautiful.
Alex the Great!.......2007-04-15
Alex Ross is THE comic book artist of the century. His work is phenomenal, his talent unending, and his perseverence is astounding. The images in this book are riveting to the eye and I can't help but think as I turn the pages, "How does he DO this?!" I am a portrait artist myself and can relate to the daunting task of drawing people, but this man is a genius. I HIGHLY recommend this book to every comic book fan. You'll be amazed.
Should have been better..........2007-02-16
Wow. I love Alex Ross, and he has soooo many beautiful pieces that they shouldn't have had any trouble finding classic, beautiful images.
This calandar is half filler. Some months are nothing more than pictures of toys based on Ross's paintings. That's ridiculous. I could have settled for the design art that the toys were made from, but I didn't buy a calandar of the artist's works to see lame products several times removed from the actual art.
High hopes led to great disappointment.
Stunning........2007-01-05
Ross is awesome. The 'behind the scenes' look at how he makes his paintings is very cool
rossereffic.......2007-01-05
I 'm a big fan of Alex Ross and Mythology is one of the most comprehensive collections of Ross-DC art. I can (and have) go through each page and never get enough. If it's was possible to produce a book with all of Ross's works, I would definitely buy it.

This is a great reference guide for beginner and advanced costume makers. I highly recomend this book.
This book changed my life.......2004-07-27
Ever since I was a little boy, I have dressed up as my favorite anime character. For the last eight years, I have lived my life in costume - Chun Li from Street Fighter. This book helped me realize that not only am I alone, but I could actually be popular. Thank you Jennifer Cahill!
BEST BOOK EVER.......2003-05-15
WHAT A GREAT BOOK AND THE GIRLS ARE HOT TOO. HA HA
Cosplay Girls kicks!.......2003-03-17
Another DH Publishing success! That's if you're into wacky Japanese pop culture! This book is full of cute J-girls dressed in every Anime and Manga character costume you can think of (and a lot you can't). Why do they do it? Well, it's all explained, plus bits and pieces about making costumes, doing your hair, posing, etc. There's also interviews with Cosplayers (who all seem a bit crazed) and the Cameko ... who follow them around with cameras (really are crazed) . It's a colorful, fun book, that you can look thru again and again and always find something strange and new. A great gift for somebody. And Amazon are offering 30%!
Book Description
German film-goers flocked to see musicals and melodramas during the Nazi era. Although the Nazis seemed to require that every aspect of ordinary life advance the fascist project, even the most popular films depicted characters and desires that deviated from the politically correct ideal. Probing into the contradictory images of womanhood that surfaced in these films, Antje Ascheid shows how Nazi heroines negotiated the gender conflicts that confronted contemporary women.
The careers of Kristina Soderbaum, Lilian Harvey, and Zarah Leander speak to the Nazis' need to address and contain the "woman question," to redirect female subjectivity and desires to self sacrifice for the common good (i.e., national socialism). Hollywood's new women and glamorous dames were out; the German wife and mother were in. The roles and star personas assigned to these actresses, though intended to entertain the public in a politically conformist way, point to the difficulty of yoking popular culture to ideology.

an excellent compilation of often-overlooked characters.......1999-05-17
I couldn't allow Jeff Rovin's ADVENTURE HEROES to be represented by only one derogatory review. In this book, Mr. Rovin continues his ongoing quest to familiarize his readers with the wide range of science fiction and fantasy characters that have been presented throughout history. I might quarrel with some aspects of Mr. Rovin's alphabetical system (The tv show wasn't called "Lt. Columbo," so why should the entry have been under the "L"s?), and, of course, Mr. Rovin's selection process is, as always, occasionally questionable (Where were the kids from the tv show "Dungeons and Dragons"? Where was Kolchak? Why give space to a one-shot parody of Sgt.s Fury and Rock? If you're going to include Rama, then why not delve further into various other religions? How do some golden-age comic book adventurers rate inclusion while others do not? And will we ever be treated to more than casual glances at the literatures and popular cultures of other countries?), but this book remains an excellent example of its type; with so many characters to choose from, we can't expect Mr. Rovin to get to them all, and he does pretty well by the ones he includes. Aside from the above, the only real complaint I can offer about this book is that the cover features Doc Savage so prominently, but, since Doc was covered in ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SUPER-HEROES, the book does not discuss him at all. As noted, no book of this type can ever hope to be all-inclusive, but for a look at several American adventure characters of the first half of this century, most of whom Mr. Rovin had no space for, I strongly recommend Robert Sampson's six-volume series YESTERDAY'S FACES.
This book sux!!.......1999-04-24
This book really sux. If u want to get it, then u r a idiot!

Book Description
Bandits, Captives, Heroines, and Saints investigates cultural icons of the late nineteenth century from Mexico’s largely unstudied northwest borderlands, present-day Sonora, Baja California, and western Chihuahua. Robert McKee Irwin looks at popular figures such as Joaquín Murrieta, the gold rush social bandit; Lola Casanova, the anti-Malinche, whose marriage to a Seri Indian symbolized a forbidden form of mestizaje; and la Santa de Cabora, a young faith healer who inspired armed insurgencies and was exiled to Arizona.
Cultural icons such as Murrieta, Lola Casanova, and la Santa de Cabora are products of intercultural dialogue, Irwin reveals, and their characterizations are unstable. They remain relevant for generations because there is no consensus regarding their meanings, and they are weapons in struggles of representation in the borderlands. The figures studied here are especially malleable, he argues, because they are marginalized from the mainstream of historiography.
A timely analysis, Bandits, Captives, Heroines, and Saints challenges current paradigms of border studies and presents a rich understanding of the ways in which cultural icons influence people’s minds and lives.
Robert McKee Irwin is associate professor of Spanish at the University of California, Davis, and the author of Mexican Masculinities (Minnesota, 2003).

Book Description
From life and literature come the heroines of this volume. The essays demonstrate that women can fit the role of hero as defined by Joseph Campbell: “A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder, fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won, the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.” Contributors to this volume cover a wide range of heroic women.
Book Description
Since the game Tomb Raider was first released in 1996, its protagonist Lara Croft has become an international celebrity. The virtual archaeologist-adventuress has been featured in various sequels to the original game, a line of action figures, two Hollywood films starring Angelina Jolie, forty comic books, a series of novels, and a variety of clothing, merchandise, and ephemera. She has appeared on the covers of Time and Newsweek, spawned innumerable Internet fan sites and a library of adulatory fan fiction, become a pornographic sex symbol, and even inspired a look-alike beauty pageant. Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky's groundbreaking study examines Lara Croft as a cyber heroine - a female body ubiquitously inhabited by game players, an icon of both female strength and male objectification, and the virtual future of fame. Despite Croft's prominence there have been few critical inquiries into her bridging of the boundary between virtual and real worlds or the extent to which she reflects and influences the image of women in digital media. First published in German and revised for this English-language edition, this book is an innovative analysis of the multimedia heroine, tracing the top-down marketing strategies and bottom-up frenzy that precipitated the Lara Croft phenomenon. For girls and women, Croft is a symbol of empowerment, a tough and self-assured riot grrl who has opened up the overwhelmingly masculinized world of computer gaming to female participants. At the same time, she personifies both heterosexual male fantasies and the twinned processes of globalization and cultural imperialism. Drawing on feminist and cultural studies, Deuber-Mankowsky sees Croft as symptomatic of the new media environment and its tendency to erase all qualitative difference, even sexual difference.
Customer Reviews:
Examining her image of female strength and tracking marketing strategies which have supported this image.......2005-11-08
Actress Lara Croft has been a celebrity since the 1996 movie Tomb Raider, and has enjoyed a line of appearances in everything from film to comic books and novels, since. Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky's Lara Croft: Cyber Heroine takes a different approach from the usual biographical sketch, examining her image of female strength and tracking marketing strategies which have supported this image. Cultural and social analysis contribute to a study not just of Croft's achievement and image, but of the new media's representation of the powerful yet sexual woman figure as a whole.
