Walt's World.......2002-03-05
Walt Disney lives.
No, I'm not talking about the urban legend about him being cryogenically sealed and stashed below the Pirates of the Caribbean exhibition. Nor is this some soft New Ageism about spirits inhabiting the celestial plane.
He's alive down on a plot of land outside of Orlando, Florida, a boom city that was a dumpy little crossroad when Walt began buying what became a 30,000-acre spread there is the late 1960s.
Walt's gone, but his vision and energy lives on, and once you start dipping into "Since the World Began," you'll see that the scope of his vision is nothing short of awesome.
There are many faces of Disney, the producer of family-friendly and highly profitable movies, the creator of family-friendly theme parks, but also a visionary who thought that, as one associate put it, "bad information was responsible for all the evil in the world." Who tried to change people's attitudes within the confines of an amusement park, the man whose idealism spawned the Epcot center, and under Michael Eisner, the Disney Institute, where education and learning are on a par with entertainment.
What the book won't tell you -- this is published by Hyperion, Disney's publishing arm, and written by Jeff Kurtti, a longtime Disney employee -- is just what hell Walt went through to realize his vision. You won't hear of Disney's fundamentalist upbringing, his retreat into fantasy to escape a brutal father and life in poverty, his endless hard work to make animated movies, his multiple nervous breakdowns. His brother Roy is idealized as the business brain behind Walt's success, but you won't hear that Roy constantly opposed Disney's ideas as a waste of money. When Kurtti writes that Disney founded the design firm Walt Disney Imagineering in 1952 "because he realized that he wouldn't be able to create Disneyland within the boundaries of the studio system," he doesn't mention that it was also because Roy and the Disney board refused to advance Walt the money to design Disneyland, fearing that it would be a failure.
There was plenty of reason for Roy to be worried, too. Disney's ideas constantly threw the company perilously close to bankruptcy, generally on the order of every 18 months, until Disney's deal with ABC in 1955 made him very wealthy and put the company on a firm financial footing. Walt Disney was an idealist and a visionary, and if it wasn't for his tenacity, the company would not be the worldwide giant it is today.
Even while ignoring those shadings, there is still plenty of story left to make "Since the World Began" an awe-inspiring overview of Walt Disney World. It's probably the single largest and most complex construction project this side of the space shuttle. Its statistics are jaw-dropping: 55 miles of canals and levees were built to control the water levels, nine acres of underground corridors thread through the park, housing sewer lines, pipes and cables, and a pneumatic system for hauling trash, 60,000 plants and 800 varieties of trees acquired, moved and transplanted to build the park, 100,000 pounds of linen had to be washed every day.
As befitting its creator, the theme park was ahead of its time in its use of innovative technology. WDW was also the first area to implement 911 service in Florida, the first commercial venture to use fiber optic cables, the first telephone system using underground cable instead of overhead wires.
But the park was also a reflection of Walt Disney's vision of a global coming together of different peoples and cultures, learning about each other and attempting to find and enjoy peace as a result. It's globalization with a human face, to borrow someone else's phrase, and even if it seems outdated or even impossible in this post-9/11 world, Walt's beliefs is a hopeful and sustaining vision, and as American as the culture from which it sprang.
The Ultimate Book for the Disney Fanatic!.......2001-04-30
Wow, wow, wow what a great book depicting the history of the number one vacation spot on the planet. I actually bought this book when it came out about 5 years ago. After reading it, I decided I'm going back to Dinsey World to celebrate its 25th birthday. Needless, to say it was a great trip. This is the book for all you wanting to know about Dinsey World History. For Dinseyland I would reccommend Disneyland: Inside Story, but getting on of those under... is a hard task.... What are you waiting for, buy this book! Get ready to experience the magic!
An in-depth look at Disney history.......2000-11-23
The author dives into the nuts and bolts of Disney history, including the formation of the Reedy Creek Improvement District and Disney's unique infrastructure. Yet the book isn't bogged down with technical, intricate details. Any Disney fan should enjoy reading about the Imagineering behind all four Florida parks' concepts, the hidden meanings of the names on Main Street's second floor windows, the transformation of Tomorrowland, ad infinitum. I received the book as a gift in 1996 and I've enjoyed reading through it several times.
Best book on Walt Disney World.......1999-09-12
This is a very good book on Walt Disney World. It is far superior to the 20th Anniversary Book "Walt Disney World 20 Magical Years". Although, many of the pictures are the same, there are alot more in Since the World Began.
In addition, this book provides much more information on the creation of the park. Still the best book on the creation of the Disney theme parks is "Disneyland: Inside Story" by Randy Bright. Since this is out of print, Walt Disney World 20 Magical Years is a good choice.

Book Description
During the final months of his life, Walt Disney was consumed with the world-wide problems of cities. His development concept at the time of his death on December 15th, 1966 would be his team's conceptual response to the ills of the inner cities and the sprawl of the megalopolis: the "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow" or, as it became known, EPCOT.
This beautifully written, instantly engrossing volume focuses on the original concept of EPCOT, which was conceived by Disney as an experimental community of about 20,000 people on the Disney World property in central Florida. With its radial plan, 50-acre town center enclosed by a dome, themed international shopping area, greenbelt, high-density apartments, satellite communities, monorail and underground roads, the original EPCOT plan is reminiscent of post-war Stockholm and the British New Towns, as well as today's transit-oriented development theory.
Unfortunately, Disney himself did not live long enough to witness the realization of his "model city." However, EPCOT's evolution into projects such as the EPCOT Center and the town of Celebration displays a remarkable commitment by the Disney organization to the original EPCOT philosophy, one which continues to have relevance in the fields of planning and development.

strange, controlling vision.......2006-07-03
Mannheim gives an independent look at Walt Disney's last dream. Of a planned urban community that would not have the various ills common in American cities in the 60s. The text goes into many details of how EPCOT was designed. It draws key distinctions between the EPCOT of Walt's vision and the Epcot centre that actually was built in Florida.
The vision was for an experimental community. What the Disney Corp. later did was set up a planned community, "Celebration", in Florida that evoked Walt's ideas. The text describes how this community could well be seen as culturally stifling by some readers, with many restrictions on its inhabitants.
The textual portion of the book is only 70% of the pages. The remaining 30% has an extensive bibliography that indicates serious scholarship by Mannheim.
What a Shame Walt Couldn't Finish..........2004-10-21
Although a bit technical in places, this is simply the best book on Walt Disney that I have ever read. The author fearlessly draws upon many disciplines to help explain what the genius of Walt Disney was consumed with at the time of his death. Author Steve Mannheim used documents as well as interviews with Disney family and colleagues to paint a fascinating picture of the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT). It is worth the academic book price and I would not be surprised if its collectors' value increases.
Fascinating read, but can't answer the burning questions..........2004-07-12
'What if Walt Disney had lived 10 or 20 more years?' and 'What would Walt's EPCOT have been like?' are, to me, two of the most burning "What Ifs" of our time. Steve Mannheim's "Walt Disney and the Quest for Community" is a captivating and fascinating read. Excrutiatingly well-researched, well-written, and incredibly informative, it provides Disney fans and those interested in urban renewal with basic incites into the last great dream of the visionary Disney. But that's as far as it goes. Mannheim treads lightly around the basic questions of what life would have actually been like in the city of EPCOT and, sadly, never provides much more than a teasing glimpse of the "might-have-beens". According to Mannheim, Disney himself was only in the preliminary stages of planning and working out the details of his experimental city when he died and that we will likely never know for sure exactly what it would've been. Perhaps this is true, but seeing as how so much of the early planning/purchasing/contracting/construction/building stages of the proposed Disney World project were already a done deal (or, at least, well under way), it seems quite unlikely that Walt hadn't confided his plans to someone. He was a meticulous planner and not given to flying by the seat of his pants when realizing a vision of this scope. Not to mention the fact that EPCOT was going to be joint venture with several leaders in American Industry who would likely NOT invest in undisclosed ideas that existed only in someone's mind, even Disney's. Also, Mannheim seems to too strongly defend current Disney management in the closing chapter and states that, with the construction and population of Celebration, Florida, that somehow Walt's EPCOT truly lives and that the time has finally come for some slight realizations of his last unfullfilled dreams. Celebration, as any student of Disney's final dream can tell you, is a FAR cry from the EPCOT concept and that current Disney Company philosophies and standards show little resemblance to the high moral standards and belief system he held his company to during his lifetime. The book portrays today's EPCOT Center as a living tribute to the man and his bold vision, but even the most casual recent visitor to that park can see that this simply is not so. Stil, I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who's a Disney fan or, like me, still fascinated after all these years by Walt's ambitious vision, just be warned going in that you'll likely still have the same burning questions after finishing it.
Researching the Story of Walt Disney's Final Dream.......2003-03-13
It is clear that it will be the responsibility of historians to accurately reflect the influence that Walt Disney had upon the development of cultural and social structures; beginning during the twentieth century and continuing into a new millennium. Though Walt Disney reflected the social values of his contemporaries in the United States, he also tapped into the essential curiosity that drives all human beings toward exploration and discovery. It is that final phase of Walt Disney's bold and creative exploration that provides the backdrop for this important study.
In "Walt Disney and the Quest for Community", author Steve Mannheim brings Walt's original idea for EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) back to the table after almost four decades of neglect. While the creation of Epcot Center at Walt Disney World provides for an interesting day of amusement, the origins of EPCOT (the community) had far greater implications. Those living and working at the EPCOT of Walt Disney's mind would participate in an innovative commercial, social, and political experiment that would be unprecedented in human history. Regrettably, the genius of Walt Disney was revealed to be finite with his passing in December 1966. With Disney's death, the dream of EPCOT as originally conceived was shelved as being unattainable without the necessary provision of Walt Disney's personal authority and command.
Mannheim's text explores the historical context and influences upon Walt's research and imagination, along with many first hand interviews and accounts from those who worked closely with Disney during this exploratory period in the mid 1960's. The text is expertly researched and provides the most thorough account to date of the vision behind Walt Disney's final dream: E.P.C.O.T.
The Evolution of Walt's EPCOT Concept.......2003-03-07
This is a great read about Walt Disney's EPCOT concept. It draws upon original interviews, research in archives, Disney company building experience, and history to tell a fascinating story of Walt's original ideas and how they evolved into later projects like Epcot and Celebration. Most important, it is clear that the author has a solid understanding of Walt Disney the man and uses it to put EPCOT into context. In addition, the author provides many references with which I was unfamiliar. Finally, the book is organized in such a way as to make it very accessible. I think that this book will be an important resource for both scholars and Disney fans in the future.
Book Description
From the director and writer of Being John Malkovicha film by Spike Jonze, starring Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep, from a screenplay by Charlie and Donald Kaufman about the adaptation of the bestselling book The Orchid Thiefan exciting new filmbook in the Newmarket Shooting Script® series.
This latest head trip from director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich) concerns an orchid collector (Chris Cooper), a journalist (Meryl Streep as author Susan Orlean), and the screenwriter (Charlie Kaufman, played by Nicolas Cage) who, in adapting Susan Orlean's book The Orchid Thief, writes himself into the movie.
The Orchid Thief tells the story of a Florida man who schemes to clone the "ghost orchid" and sell it to people all over the world who are struck with orchidelirium, the obsession with collecting rare orchids at any price. Adaptation: The Shooting Script® includes the complete screenplay, a selection of 20 black-and-white movie stills, as well as an introduction by Charlie Kaufman.

Beautifully done.......2004-09-26
I have not yet read 'The Orchid Theif', and as such am in a good position to comment on the greatness of this movie in stand-alone form.
Charlie Kaufman is a brilliant screenwriter - and Adaptation is a masterpiece. The point he has tried to make in adapting 'The Orchid Theif' to screenplay is that if he were to adapt the book in it's original form, it would not 'make it' in the movie industry without any cliched Hollywood moments (scandal, sex, murder etc..). A movie built solely on 'flowers' would not grab the audience's attention and keep them interested.
This point is further reinforced by the fact that Charlie's twin, Donald produces his first screenplay using the exact cliches Charlie has been trying to avoid - but his script is deemed a masterpiece!
In Charlie's script, he pieces together parts of 'The Orchid Theif' (presented in the most beautiful way - Merryl Streep is superb in this role!), with pieces of his own tormented life.
The end result, is a movie about making a movie about adapting a book to a movie. Confused? Watch it with no expectations, and you will be pleasantly suprised at how much you enjoy Adaptation.
It's About The Process!.......2004-04-23
First and foremost, I would have to say that this is one of my favorite movies. Charlie Kaufman really knows how to write such a compelling and remarkable movie. Second, many people have this misconception that ther movie was supposed to be based on the novel "The Orchid Thief". What people fail to realize is that once a screenwriter is hired to adapt a novel, it is their job to write the screenplay in dramatic screen form. In ther movie, if people paid closer attention, Kaufman was clearly trying to illustrate the problems of adapting such a beautiful novel without risking authenticity because of pressures from mainstream Hollywood.
Although the film turns out to be a bit autobiographical, Kaufman still manages to remain close to the general theme of the novel which is how we are all trying to adapt to our surroundings(hence the title-"Adaptation"), Either way, Kaufman still manages to show the intricate nature of the orchids, and how they serve as a symbol to the characters that embody the movie. Not to be too analytical, the script/movie is still great. Don't take my word for it, just watch it for youself.
This is about a screenplay.. not a book........2004-01-26
Adaptation by Charlie Kaufman (film dir. by Spike Jonze) is like the name might imply, about adaptation. Many critics of this script complain that it is a failure of Suzanne Orlean's novel "The Orchid Thief" but I disagree. The first point to make I've already said: it's about adapting a book. Now, there are plenty of references to the orchid thief, and this script is inexticably linked with the book, but the novel, as Kaufman says in the movie "is a beautiful book about flowers... I just want to make a movie about flowers" (not an actual quote, but it's kinda' close to what he says throughout). The script constantly praises the novel, but the movie is really about what it takes to write a screenplay, and is therefore almost more of a creative work than an actual adaptation. As such, the screenplay is excellent. It is witty, careful, and through many twists and turns, becomes the very item that it claims, maybe even strives, to not be: a product of hollywood. What makes this movie more than a car-chase-sex-scene-drugs-love-insert-archetypical-theme-here kinda' movie is the fact that Kaufman's writing is brilliant. He tastefully inserts every single hollywood cliche from theme song to personal struggle into the film in a way that won't make you puke. Instead of being a lame rehash, adaptation leaves the viewer wondering what it really was that just took place. The story is well-paced, characters are stongly developed, and plot twists don't feel thrown in at the last moment: you feel that this could honestly happen, at least most of the time. While it strays significantly from the orchid thief, the script stands well on its own two legs, slinking through the plot in a way that will have you before you even realize it, then turns you on your head. Both the book and script are great literary works, but, even with their strong kinship, it's best to view them separately than attack the latter for it's liberal use of the former.
An abomination.......2003-11-19
Susan Orlean's book The Orchid Thief is a true gem - wonderfully written and highly entertaining. I don't know what Charlie Kaufman was thinking but this is no "adaptation" of The Orchid Thief. It's really a shame that such a fine book is associated with this screenplay. Surely, Kaufman could have come up with a more creative way to adapt The Orchid Thief for the screen. This screenplay is little more than a rant on the film industry. It doesn't do justice to Orlean's work.
Want your taste & intelligence insulted? Read this book!.......2003-09-05
This self-aggrandizing autobiographical screenplay has virtually nothing to do with Susan Orlean's fascinating book "The Orchid Thief", which is about legal inequality at the Federal level. Instead, Kaufman insults his employers character and our taste & intelligence by insisting that no one will see any film that doesn't have drugs, sleazy sex and high speed chases - none of which appear in Orlean's fine book, but are substituted by Kaufman for the entire premise of the original work. Some of Kaufman's past work was novel and entertaining. This screenplay is, at best, depressing. Read Orlean's book instead.

Not enough substance.......2002-10-24
This book could have been much better if there were perhaps fewer topics which the author could have written more detail about. As it is, each topic gets about one page, sometimes less. This book might be useful for those who are new to Florida, but even then, many stories were nationally covered such as: serial killers Andrew Cunanan and Ted Bundy, a brief bio about the "National Enquirer" newspaper, a few celebrities who have lived in Florida, etc. I think a lot of what you find in this book you could easily find doing a seach on the Internet.
The topics themselves are fairly interesting, but there is a serious lack of depth in the coverage. Overall this book was disappointing, so I'm glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.

A Very Informative Book!.......2001-05-13
When I first bought this book I didn't even know if it would be worth reading. When I got started on it I was very pleased with the writing. This book documents some of the star studded residents that live in Palm Beach. You are able to read about the Kennedy clan, the Roxanne Pulitzer divorce case, the exploits of Donald Trump and many other cases of the famous residents of Palm Beach. I also liked the manner in which the party circuit of Palm Beach was laid out by the author. This book was better than reading the National Enquirer. Buy this book, you will enjoy the reading.

From the camp horror classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon to Scarface, many films have indelible connections to Florida. This guide to Florida cinema and locations reveals that the Sunshine State has been an integral part not only of America's film history but also of its cultural history.
Doll and Morrow group more than 80 films shot in Florida by theme, covering each movie with a plot synopsis, cast and credits list, and a discussion of the film's importance. They feature behind-the-scenes views of the making of each film, analyze each film's connection with its Florida locale, and offer an abundance of details and revelations about the filmmakers and stars. Each chapter concludes with a Movie Tourist's Guide to sites connected to the films that can be visited by the public. Movie tourists will want to venture to famous locations, such as those in South Beach, where scenes from Scarface and The Birdcage were filmed. And Florida natives will enjoy the book's references to the state's history and unique attractions, including Weeki Wachee Springs, Cypress Gardens, and Ross Allen's Reptile Institute.
Florida on Film is the essential guide for anyone interested in the history of filmmaking in the Sunshine State.

Not What I Expected!.......2007-07-20
I bought this book thinking I was getting a book of facts on the movies filmed in Florida with detailed information of the locations where they were filmed. This is more of a philosophical book on how the Florida locations added to the meaning of the movies. Several notable movies weren't even listed or locations weren't even mentioned. I'm returning it tomorrow.
